A NOTE FROM THE

editor

Family is what is important, especially around the holidays. This is one reason we always have a family on the cover of our magazine. Families come in all different shapes and sizes and some are not even blood related, but the one common factor is the love and support they give to each other. The holidays are the perfect opportunity to be with loved ones and cherish the memories. This holiday season we chose the Stark family for our cover. Their ability to integrate the skills used in their therapy practices into their own daily lives is inspiring. With the holidays just around the corner, there’s no time like the present to start searching for the perfect gifts. There are few better ways to spread community spirit than shopping at local businesses, and we have put together a local Holiday Gift Guide to make your shopping easier. We also acknowledge exceptional real estate agents with our annual Real Estate Profiles. If you are thinking about buying or selling a home, these are some of our area’s most notable real estate professionals. Our Epicurious section is sure to entice you with fabulous recipes from some of your favorite restaurants. Whether you love to cook or just enjoy trying new dishes for the holidays, you will impress your loved ones. Calabasas Style Magazine had an extra reason to celebrate recently with our 7th anniversary party at the Calabasas Country Club. It was a great evening to share with so many, and we truly appreciate the support from one and all. Happy holidays from all of us at Calabasas Style Magazine!

SKY FULL OF STARS PRESENTED BY THE KEVIN CORDASCO FOUNDATION ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Zac Wasserman

Kevin Cordasco, Sr., and his family hosted a beautiful fundraising event for the Kevin Cordasco Foundation, Something Yellow, and dedicated the evening of September 29 to the Heroes of Childhood Cancer. Kevin, Jr., was an inspirational young man who battled neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer that affects less than 700 children annually, for nearly seven years. He was an honors student, an athlete, and a musician. Kevin Cordasco, Jr., passed away March 11, 2013. The Cordasco family and their friends continue to remember Kevin through the Something Yellow Foundation. The night, hosted at the Warner Center Hilton Hotel, included a cocktail hour, dinner, dancing, and a live and silent auction, where items were offered to interested bidders. A dinner club atmosphere was created, complete with the sounds of accomplished composer/arranger Paul McDonald and his incredible Big Band, with special appearance by Kevin Cordasco and friends. WESTLAKE VILLAGE INN CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Marvin Steindler

The Westlake Village Inn celebrated its 50th Anniversary on September 6, with a huge number of guests, dignitaries, and city officials attending to celebrate this landmark event. The now-venerable and iconic boutique hotel had its humble beginnings in 1968 when it served as a stopover locale between Los Angeles and the Central Coast. A half century later, the Westlake Village Inn has become a favorite destination for global travelers as well as locals. The property features a 141-room full-service hotel, golf course, spa, fine-dining restaurant, private lake, and lush gardens. It is also home of the Stonehaus enoteca, a local favorite hangout where friends can enjoy fabulous wines, food, and music, as well as Bogies Nightclub where they can dance the night away. As the site of countless weddings, showers, rehearsal dinners, and private parties, the Westlake Village Inn is where life is celebrated.

While her sister presents as a daring extrovert, Noa comes across as a bit more introverted and introspective. An artist through and through, her craft spills over from canvas to cookie sheet. Noa is an avid baker and loves to create delicious works of art. This talented young woman has also been involved in gymnastics and guitar lessons throughout the years. His talent for soccer is matched only by his love of the game. Edan is currently a 5th grader at Chaparral Elementary. Like his older sisters, Edan has a wonderful work ethic. So what is it like inside the family of two marriage and family therapists? “Implementing emotional intelligence into my marriage, parenting, and relationships has been my focus and passion since starting out in the field,” says Dana. “We address conflict directly, mindfully, and with empathy and understanding. We practice healthy conflict resolution that brings us closer to each other. We are all about open communication and mindfulness. In terms of parenting, I process concerns and behaviors without judgement or criticism. Using empathic attunement, I put all effort to understand the emotions behind behaviors, guiding my children and attending to their emotional needs.” Dana also stresses the importance of family dinners and making time to enjoy each other. Holiday Do's and Don'ts From a Beauty Expert 68

Calabasas Style

By Anna D Guanche MD FAAD Board-Certified Dermatologist Founder, Bella Skin Institutee The holidays are upon us and it will soon be time to entertain, be entertained, see old and new acquaintances, and travel. It is a time when most of us want to put our best foot forward. Enjoying the holidays involves looking and feeling great, not stressing out too much, and keeping focused on what is most important. As a board-certified dermatologist, I am asked about and informed of all of the latest in beauty trends by my own patients. Here are some holiday dos and don’ts so that you can feel great about the season and come out of December with a sense of joy and renewal, instead of exhaustion.

Do Plan ahead: Start shopping for gifts and holiday outfits now. You likely have a list of parties that you are invited to yearly. Make it easy on yourself by writing your list and checking it twice now before the holiday craze hits. This way, you can actually relax and enjoy the parties when it is time. Stress is not pretty. It causes breakouts due to elevated cortisol levels and promotes premature aging! Try corset training: Yes! Corsets can help narrow the waistline. The waist-to-hip ratio has it when it comes to dressing sexy. You will look your absolute best in that dress! I recommend three hours per day, not while standing for long periods of time or exercising. Do it when its time to relax. Try hair extensions: If you have not tried them, you might be missing out. According to Christie Brinkley, hair extensions are one of the most youth-enhancing tricks. Clip-ins are available that level up the volume, quality, and overall appearance of the hair. Christie’s line is called Hair2wear. This can take you from beautiful to bombshell in minutes. Your hairdresser can place them securely. Get a lift: There are many options for a lift of the face or a mini makeover with little to no downtime. The GuancheLift™ is strategically placed filler that lifts and

Go to bed with your makeup on. Makeup particles get in your eyes and cause irritation and puffiness, which then leads to wrinkles. Makeup also blocks your pores and promotes blackheads and breakouts. We’re not trying to go there for the holidays. Stress out. Instead, look over your calendar. Plan your outfits, hair and nail appointments, facials, and gifts all ahead of time so that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor without hassle. Stop exercising—try to maintain some of your fitness routine as best as you can. Stay in shape so that you’re not full of regrets in January. If you let it all slide

For the Holidays

By Lori Berezin Photography by Ivonne Hive At Aldik Home in Van Nuys, the winter holidays begin on October 1st and continue until the last ornament comes down. In a town full of tinsel, there’s little wonder this beloved 24,000-squarefoot Southern California showroom displays more Christmas spirit and decorating ideas than anywhere on the planet (except perhaps the North Pole). This year, shoppers will discover a giant gingerbread house replete with a deliciously festive décor plus a 16-foot tunnel with nearly 50,000 LED lights and neon ropes that weave in and out of trees and garlands. There are also plenty of playful elves, a stunning variety of lights, and a dazzling array of unique ornaments, floral stems, and more. No wonder Aldik Home is considered one of the best resources for holiday décor in the country. More than 55 fully decorated Christmas trees are covered head-to-toe with colorful ornaments, luxurious ribbon, twinkling LED lights, and glittery stems. And Santa’s elves have tipped us off that black and white will be especially popular this season. n Aldik Home 7651 Sepulveda Blvd. Van Nuys 818.988.5970 aldikhome.com

NIGHTS OF FREEDOM FUNDRAISER ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Zac Wasserman

Jodi and Joseph Miller hosted an intimate evening on September 8th at their home in Hidden Hills with live music, dinner, and cocktails in support of Unlikely Heroes, an organization that rescues children from human trafficking. Unlikely Heroes is an American 501 nonprofit organization that rescues, restores, and rehabilitates child victims of sex slavery around the world. Rodeo Drive Concours

Delights Dads By Dustin Troyan Photography by Steve Geldman Image Photo Motorsports Although time has passed since Father's Day, we can't forget what a special day it was in Beverly Hills. Sure, it's because it was Father's Day, but it was also the Rodeo Drive Concours, otherwise known as the "Father's Day Car Show." Mastermind of the event and all-around car-guy-extraodinaire Bruce Meyer spearheaded the show, which is now globally recognized. What could be better than checking out some of the rarest and most collectible cars while walking around with 30,000 to 40,000 of your closest friends. This year was the 25th anniversary of the event, and as always, Bruce and his team pulled off the best show to date. The theme of the day was “silver painted” cars, and they were in abundance. With collectors from all over the state and further pulling out their finest, it is an absolutely amazing show that is free to all spectators. There is another fun aspect of this show and that is that all the other exotic, classic, and rare vehicles are literally littered all over Beverly Hills wherever they can find a parking spot. As there is limited space at the Rodeo show, the entirety of Beverly Hills comes alive with collector cars. To see and hear these amazing vehicles driving down the street while hanging out in Beverly Hills is truly special. It is a who’s who of car collectors, celebrities, and enthusiasts alike. If you have never attended the event, be sure to mark your calendars for the 2019 event. It is truly a wonderful experience, and I suggest attending. Make reservations at Dad’s favorite restaurant for lunch after the show and make a day of it. n

While you most likely have yearly sentimental favorites that have been carefully packed away each year and unearthed every November/December, refrain from using all holiday tchotchkes in every inch of the house every year. Certainly you will have your favorites that make a yearly appearance, but it is okay if not everything makes the cut. In some cas-

find ornaments and holiday décor is the Aldik Home showroom in Van Nuys. Create your own holiday palette using hues already incorporated into your décor. Or for a neutral look, snowflakes made of glass or crystals don’t clash with anything and always add a noticeable wow.

THE TABLE The key is cohesion. Establish a color theme and style by matching them to your China, table runner, or linens. For extra style points, swap out plain white candlesticks for a color that coordinates everything together cohesively. Use surfaces that catch the light—like mercury glass, silver, and gold. They are a gorgeous way to add some sparkle to a room and make the most of natural light. For centerpieces, use glass vases brimming with colorful glass balls or your extra ornaments. I love a natural look, and just by tucking in a pinecone here and olive or rosemary sprig there and using bowls of produce, like pomegranates and persimmons, items from nature create a beautiful look in addition to adding texture. And don’t forget the name cards. Get that host-of-the-year award by cutting gingerbread cookies into letters using alphabet cookie cutters and then put them at each place setting.

THE GIFTS Since it’s the season of giving, for a contemporary look, wrap your gifts with craft paper with natural burlap ribbon and top them with a pretty piece of greenery. Or if glamour is more your style, pick up some stunning wallpaper to wrap your gifts with. Customize your gifts with mini square prints from socialprintstudio.com. Hole punch the corner and tie it to your ribbon. These work great for place settings as well! n

15TH ANNUAL JAKE’S LADDER ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Zac Wasserman

The Dyne Family in conjunction with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation hosted the 15th Annual Jake’s Ladder on Sunday, October 14, at the Commons at Calabasas. Jake’s Ladder is part of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s annual fundraising efforts, celebrating Jacob Dyne, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of 14 months. Their mission is to help people with cystic fibrosis live longer, healthier lives while simultaneously searching for a cure. Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease for which there is no known cure. It affects 30,000 adults and children in the United States and 70,000 people worldwide. Over the past 15 years, this event has raised over $2.1 million dollars. Jake’s Ladder is on pace to raise over $90,000 this year to help the much-needed Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Nonsense and Rare Mutations Research and Therapeutic Initiative. Youth dancers sent a powerful message, with lead dancer Colton Burton and Rage founder, Veda Burton, making an emotional appeal based on Veda’s experience of rescuing Colton at age three from an abusive home. Andrew Firestone returned for a fourth year as the event host. Elizabeth Yi, event co-chair, emphasized that one in four people are victims of domestic violence. EXCEPTIONAL REAL ESTATE

hile there are many factors that contribute to home sales, experts predict that Southern California will continue as one of the most desired places to live in the country. Our climate, high-paying jobs, interesting geography, lifestyle, and recreation make our area a magnet for people around the world. Other factors—such as price growth, interest rates, and lack of new construction—still make buying or selling a home or investing in the real estate market a complex process whereby you need a professional agent by your side. The following section highlights some of the most exceptional realtors in our community. By sharing their profiles, we hope it can help you determine the real estate agent or agency best suited to fit your individual needs and objectives.

Home is more than an object or property, but rather, the fullness of life that begins and ends the day in the most important space we know: home. Why have you been so successful? We feel the true meaning of luxury has been lost by a monolithic industry. As a boutique brokerage, our formula is simple: Evoke experience. Ensure the best possible outcome while maintaining the highest level of handcrafted service with trust and integrity.

Why should potential clients choose you? Sophisticated systems and marketing technology are just starting points. Every office has them. And while

we believe ours are superior, clients choose us because we’re their ultimate listing tool! We marry knowledge of the market, innovative strategies, and personal interest for the community we serve. Selling Calabasas and Hidden Hills is selling a lifestyle. As a lifestyle brand, we’re the only brand with an in-house yachting and aviation division. We leverage these divisions and market our listings to a discreet rolodex of buyers, having the requisites and caliber to live within our desired

gated communities. And that’s just the beginning.

How do clients benefit from your knowledge of the community and local culture? When we moved from Beverly Hills, we immersed ourselves into the local culture. Our daughters attend nearby schools, take horseback riding, and as a family, we participate in annual events. We understand firsthand the mindset of prospective buyers drawn to this neighborhood.

I am honest, ethical, fair, and very aggressive with my approach.

What about you/ your team would you like potential clients to know? Unlike most seasoned realtors, I choose not to employ a “team.” I truly believe that I give my sellers the very best chance to sell their home so I handle all showings and negotiations. I employ just one full-time assistant to help with computer work, etc.

Why should potential clients choose you? To sell a home for top dollar, it takes extensive marketing, skill, and experience. I passionately invite homeowners to interview me so they can see why I have been able to remain consistent with my ability

to sell luxury real estate at a very high level. My reach via social media, print, and internet is unsurpassed. I pride myself on not only local marketing but a very aggressive approach to global as well.

What should potential clients know about you? I am honest, ethical, fair, and very aggressive with my approach. I only get paid when I sell a home, so I will work relentlessly until the job is finished and everyone is happy. I am happily married for 26 years and have two wonderful children. What are some obstacles your clients face today and how do you help them navigate these challenges? In the luxury real estate market, you will see homes selling off-market, which means that buyers don’t have access to exclusive inventory if they are not working with a well-connected professional. I help my clients gain access to private off-market properties to ensure they find the perfect home. My clients can also take advantage of my vast network, locally and internationally, to bring them the highest offer with ideal terms and conditions on any property they are looking to sell.

What should potential clients know about you?

One of my team’s main goals is to expand upon the city’s already established reputation and help clients identify the lifestyle and sense of community they are looking for but don’t always know where to find.

What areas are your specialty? I currently live in Calabasas with my wife, Ellie, and our three sons, so I know the area well. While I continue to represent buyers and sellers throughout Los Angeles and beyond, I especially enjoy working with people in the Calabasas and Hidden Hills communities, which are among the best in California to live, work, and raise a family in.

What should potential clients know about you? I am truly passionate about educating my clients about all the benefits of the Calabasas and neighboring Hidden Hills lifestyle. As managing partner and principal of The Agency’s Calabasas office, I bring more than a dozen years of real estate and mortgage lending experience to the team, remaining up to date on the variety of properties, lifestyle, amenities, and local inventory. When you choose me you get me, not an assistant or team member. I will be with you throughout the entire process, start to finish, whether buying or selling.

What makes you successful? Being local, hands-on, and well respected among my peers means finding that off-market home everyone is looking for and successfully selling it to my buyer. This constant commitment to my profession and my dedication to my clientele has meant I have

successfully remained one of the top agents in the community.

What sets you apart? For the past 31 years, I have built my business by making my name a household word. Recently, in an effort to stand out and offer clients an option and set myself apart from my competition, I teamed up with another well-respected local agent, Patte Gilbert. Why have you been so successful?

What separates you from your competitors?

I’d like to think that my success lies in my honesty and integrity. My clients prefer working with me because I always tell them what I think about a property—good, bad, or indifferent—as their long-term happiness with their home, and with me as their agent, is my ultimate goal. Naturally, having great relationships with all of the agents, knowing my inventory, and being a skilled negotiator are also what make me a successful agent, but most importantly, success comes from loving what I do—and I do love my job!

For the past 29+ years, I have built my business working with past clients and referrals, which I continue to do day after day. But recently, I have also started working with Heidi Adams of Coldwell Banker, and together, we have created an entirely new concept in seller and buyer representation. Clients now get the huge benefit of having both of us: Two powerful agents, two powerful offices, one powerful pair. Imagine having us both and all the marketing that Wish Sotheby’s International Realty and Coldwell Banker Global Luxury can offer. There is no secret to success. It is a result of passion, compassion, persistence, and hard work. What makes you the number-one real estate team?

How did you become so successful?

We've established a brand known to make every client feel as though they are our only client, including first-time home buyers, celebrity clientele, and seasoned investors. Because of this and along with our extensive experience and expertise in digital and social marketing, we are recognized annually as top producers and are currently ranked #1 in our office.

It's always about them and never about "the sale." Our goal is to make this journey fun, enjoyable, and full of laughter. But most of all, we press upon everyone to trust in the process.

Calabasas Style 121

What should potential clients know about you?

The real estate process inevitably has its twists and turns. An exceptional realtor is able to call on experience and problem-solving skills when it really matters. As the market evolves, I use a multi-layered approach to marketing properties and have an above-90% listing-to-sale ratio. When working with buyers, there are not many agents in the entire city that have the ability to understand and know the best locations in every price point. Getting properties ready to go to market and working with home buyers to find that perfect property are two things I love to do.

I have always thought of my work as taking care of people—start to finish—and even beyond. People are the ones that need the attention. The working relationship, whether with seller or buyer, becomes a bit of a marriage. When they need me, I am there with the best advice, like it or not. That’s my job, and that’s what they depend on me for. When clients give me the honor of working with them, whether to represent their home or to purchase another on probably the largest transaction of their lives, I show my appreciation by giving them my absolute best.

In nearly 30 years of real estate, I have found that the key to success is surrounding yourself with other like minds and creating a group dynamic that is second to none. As the number-one residential group in our office seven years running, I have created a team of agents, escrow and title, and other support persons that allow me to do what I do best—real estate, real estate, real estate.

What areas are your specialties? As original owners in The Oaks, I have garnered a razor-sharp knowledge of our local luxury community. I try to preview every new listing to provide my clients a first-hand account of the property before they step foot

I have found over the years through my own personal forays into rental properties that in the long run, there is no better source of retirement and contributes to a balanced portfolio. Owning something tangible and collecting monthly dividends is a great feeling.

What do you feel is the most rewarding aspect of your work? Clearly, real estate is a people business and my ability to connect with new clients as well as 30-year clients is truly rewarding. Building a sense of community and being a contributing part of the communitY is such a rewarding part of what we do. Why have you been so successful?

How do you give back to your community?

We have been so successful because of our attention to details. We listen to the why behind the buying or selling and develop a strategy to achieve the why. It’s more than showing properties or putting a sign in the yard or an ad on social media. It’s a devised plan of action with measurable stages along the way to make sure the why is being achieved. Every sale is different; it’s not a plugged-in experience.

Outside of work, we spend as much time with our two daughters and close friends as possible. Family is our big why and carving out time to spend with the people we enjoy most is a must. We love participating as a family in community events and building a sense of community, and being a contributing part of the communities we serve is such a rewarding part of what we do.

What areas are your specialties? We are now among the best because we aren’t there to push our agenda and just go through the motions, assuming that every buyer, investor, or property is the same. We don’t list properties, we sell properties. We provide over 16 years expertise so our clients can achieve their goals, whether buying, selling, or investing. We are there to advise as the experts on what buyers are looking for and have a specific plan of action.

rad Wiseman has been serving our Calabasas community since 1990. In addition to being a managing partner of the Calabasas office for Pinnacle Estate Properties, Inc., Brad was recently promoted to the position of branch manager. Upon receiving this promotion, Brad announced the promotion of his associate Brad Roth, a 20-year veteran and top real estate agent at Pinnacle Estate Properties, to co-manager. This dynamic duo will lead the team of great agents for the Calabasas area. Both Wiseman and Roth believe in the founding principle of the company: that a real estate company is only as good as the individual agent working for the client. They are determined to provide a full-service company of trained, professional agents that provide the kind of extraordinary service clients expect and deserve but rarely receive.

Our philosophy is reflected in our name and corporate goal – to provide the Pinnacle of Professional Service. What are your qualifications to serve as the branch manager for Pinnacle Estate Properties? I have been one of the top-ranked real estate agents in the West San Fernando Valley over the past 29 years and am consistently among the top ten in sales volume out of nearly 1,100 agents at Pinnacle Estate Properties. I hold an NMLS mortgage endorsement and have been a licensed real estate broker since 1983. I also represent clients with commercial

real estate investments across the U.S. With my vast experience and expertise, there is little wonder why I have sold in excess of $50,000,000 in just one year. I always go the extra mile for my clients and consistently provide extraordinary service to them.

What are your qualifications to be the co-manager of the Calabasas Office for Pinnacle Estate Properties? I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and studied psychology and communications.

After a memorable acting career, I spent 20 years in the Industry and sold over 400 homes with over 250,000,000 in sales. Having seen many cycles in the volatile real estate market, I can navigate the ups and downs. I was recently inducted into the Pinnacle Estate Properties Hall of Fame where I was only one of 10 to have ever received this honor.

icole and Gary’s independent yet complementary work strategies make them the ideal team in life and real estate. Together they provide an outstanding level of market knowledge and professionalism, allowing them to be consistent top producers in the industry. Their accomplishments stem from their continuous commitment, focus, and passion for their clients. As Engel & Völkers’ Top 8 Agents worldwide and zealous world travelers, their international presence attracts high-end buyers globally. Their success comes from their creative expertise and the insight they possess to assist clients in making intelligent real estate investments during any market cycle. With over 25 years of real estate experience in Southern California, the one piece of advice they wish to instill in every young mind is: Success comes from consistency, integrity, devotion, and diligence in all things.

What areas are your specialty? Our company has European heritage, and we specialize in the luxury market. Our listings are exquisite, and our clients are passionate. We find that our business seamlessly integrates with our personal life, highlighting Sherwood, Hidden Hills, North Ranch, and Hidden Valley as our natural niche. We would list our specialties as passion, diligence, and first-class service for our beloved clientele.

What separates you from your competitors? Real estate is not our job, it is our lifestyle. We integrate our business into every aspect of our lives, and the relationships we build fuel us. Personal attentiveness and relationships are among the foundations of our team. As our founder Christian Völkers stated, “Engel & Völkers started as a group of friends with a vision. That spirit is still alive!”

What do you feel is the most rewarding aspect of your work? The privilege of finding a client’s dream home or finding the perfect buyer is spectacularly surreal. Suddenly, the entire equation makes sense, and it is simply magic. Ushering our clients into the next chapter of their lives is truly a remarkable experience, one that connects us for life.

Calabasas Style 129

I pride myself on being a fierce negotiator who listens to my clients’ needs. I hand-hold them through every step of the transaction. The realtor-client relationship is one of trust and communication; you can’t have one without the other. I make sure that there is transparency in every facet of my business so new and existing relationships can be forged.

What do you feel is the most rewarding part of your work? There’s no better feeling than finding my clients their dream homes. I consider every deal to be my own, resulting in my clients referring

business to me. In fact, the majority of my business is now referrals! It’s the best complement in the world to know my clients trust me to deliver the same high standard of service for their family and friends.

What advice would you give to a new realtor starting out? There’s a misconception about real estate that it’s an “easy” way to get rich. Far from it! Sure, there are a lot of expensive properties in the L.A. area, but to make a successful business out of real estate, you need to work passionately every day to build your brand. It’s not all dollar signs, bricks, and mortar; you’re changing people’s lives.

ebra is an award-winning agent who is passionate about real estate, but it’s the clients she works with that drive her to excel as one of the best realtors in Los Angeles. This is reflected in her being awarded the RE/MAX Diamond Award, being featured on the cover of Top Agent Magazine, and always getting five-star reviews from clients. Whether she’s working with a first-time homebuyer, a seasoned developer, a celebrity client, or a family relocating to the area, Debra strives for excellence in every transaction, personalizing each deal around her clients’ situations. Early in her career, she trained as an appraiser so she could evaluate property value and educate homeowners on how to get top dollar for their homes. Because of this, her properties do not sit on the market; they consistently sell for over-asking, with multiple offers, making records in neighborhoods. Debra’s business model is simple: to exceed expectations and become her client’s go-to realtor for life.

Whoever came up with the slogan “no pain, no gain” clearly never experienced its chronic consequences. Many of us have suffered, or will suffer, from debilitating pain, the kind that makes performing even the simplest tasks a struggle. Appropriately named after the Greek goddess of revenge, Poine—pain from injury or disease certainly feels like punishment as it zaps one’s life force. Fortunately, there is hope. Dr. Magued Fadly, M.D., QME (Qualified Medical Evaluator), helps put the zest back into countless lives. In 2001, after completing his residency at

Yale and an accredited fellowship in pain management at the renowned Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Fadly established the California Spine and Pain Institute in West Hills and Encino. Since then, he has treated more than 500 fellow physicians and their families and friends, aside from tens of thousands of patients, becoming the preferred pain-management consultant in the area. His goal is to minimize distress after just one session and fully restore function within four weeks. The institute reports a whopping 95% success rate, among the highest in the country. Dr. Fadly is one of the few accredited, fellowship-trained pain-management specialists in Southern California. His vision for the California Spine and Pain Institute is to offer comprehensive, quality pain care in a compassionate and nurturing environment with spot-on diagnoses and sameday appointments. “I believe that pain relief is the core foundation of medicine,” says Dr. Fadly. “As a result, my unending goal is to conquer

pain and restore function to each individual suffering from pain.” He strives to be available to his patients whenever pain strikes. Dr. Fadly also believes in giving back through education. He teaches students, residents, and fellows from all across the United States and continues to pioneer innovative pain-management techniques, such as ozone revolution therapy for joint pain and lasers for disc problems. His clinics utilize state-ofthe-art procedures from balloon kyphoplasty to stem cell therapy, along with time-honored treatments such as acupuncture. Dr. Fadly has been the leader for the regenerative treatment of platelet-rich plasma and stem cells. Hippocrates, renowned for his quote that physicians “… do no harm,” also stated that “divine is the task to relieve pain.” For anyone suffering from pain, there is clearly nothing more heavenly than its relief. n

Ask the

Pharmacist Q

A

I would like to try CBD oil for my pain but am worried that it contains marijuana. Does it and does it work? CBD is one of many compounds in the cannabis plant. CBD oils contain concentrations of CBD. The concentrations and the uses of these oils vary. The

least-processed form of the cannabis plant is hemp. Hemp contains most of the CBD that people use medicinally. Until recently, the best-known compound in cannabis was THC. This is the active ingredient in marijuana. Marijuana contains both THC and CBD, and these compounds have different effects. THC creates a mind-altering "high" when a person smokes it. CBD is different; unlike THC, it is not psychoactive. This means that CBD does not change a person's state of mind when it is used. However, CBD does appear to produce significant changes in the body, and some research suggests that it has medical benefits. After researching the safety and effectiveness of CBD oil for treating epilepsy, the FDA recently approved the use of CBD (Epidiolex) for two rare conditions characterized by epileptic seizures. CBD oil is legal and available without a prescription in California, however it is not regulated by the FDA so quality of products varies. When drugs do not have FDA approval, it can be difficult to know whether they contain safe or effective levels of CBD. Unapproved products may not have the properties or contents stated on the packaging. CBD is not very well absorbed orally so if it isn’t made in the right way, you may not be getting much into your system. Animal studies have shown CBD oil to be effective in treating pain, inflammation, anxiety, sleep, and other conditions. Side effects include drowsiness, diarrhea, and changes in appetite or weight.

Ask the

Pediatrician Traveling with kids. By Dr. Tanya Altmann and Dr. Tiffany Fischman It’s the holiday season, which means time off of school and vacations for many families. Traveling, while enjoyable, can also be challenging when your kids are young. With a little preparation, however, you can have fun, carefree family trip and see the world.

Motion Sickness There’s nothing worse than when your child vomits in the car or plane. Fortunately, it’s not too common for young kids to get motion sick, but it can happen. If your child gets unexpectedly nauseous, give her or him some air, sips of water, a lollipop, or crackers. For older kids, try ginger candies. To prevent nausea and vomiting, limit reading, watching screens, and playing video games. Instead, encourage children to look out the window at objects in the distance or to simply relax. If needed, talk to your pediatrician as there are medications that can be given ahead of time to prevent motion sickness.

Ear Pain Ear pain when flying is due to pressure changes during take off and landing. The best thing to do is encourage sucking or swallowing if your child is awake. For infants, nursing or sucking on a pacifier during is best. Toddlers can guzzle down a drink through a straw while older kids can chew gum or suck on candies. If your kids are asleep, however, let them be. It is okay to fly with an ear infection, just remember to have kids take their medicine.

Pack Wisely Be prepared for illness, injury, and messes. Travel with a fever reducer, medications your child might need, antihistamine, bandages, and ointments. Also, make sure to pack clothes for all climates and any important blanky or stuffed animal.

Educating the Whole Child at

the Boulevard School By Lori Berezin Photography by Marvin Steindler The Boulevard School in Woodland Hills has been educating preschool students as young as 9 months old to 6 years old since 1974. Family-run since 1980, when Shirley Mauer, a teacher at the school; husband Eric; and Shirley’s brother, Morty, purchased the school. We asked founders Shirley Mauer; son Brahm, who has worked as administrator since 1985; and daughter Rodi, who is now the director, to educate us about their philosophy, courses, and more.

158

Calabasas Style

Tell us a little about the school’s history and philosophy. The Boulevard School is a family-owned and operated school. We educate the whole child, not just the academic side. We teach independent self-care, listening skills, social skills, and interpersonal skills, in addition to phonics, math, writing, science, social studies, and monthly themes. Each child can progress at his/her own rate. Thus, some finish the school year reading and writing

while others acquire the basic skills that fully prepare them for kindergarten. Elementary schools place our students in high-level classes since they are able to negotiate their environment at a mature level. Because we are a private, family-run school, our teachers have a lot of flexibility to add special activities and skills to their programs.

What courses do you currently offer? We hold mommy and me classes for kids aged 8 months to 24 months. Our regular school program begins with 18 month olds and continues through kindergarten. We also offer plenty of extracurricular activities, such as karate, cooking, Judaica, sports, gymnastics, and engineering, plus free parenting classes throughout the year and swimming lessons during the summer.

What is the student-teacher ratio? The average class size is 12 students to one teacher. Our classes for 2 year olds and toddlers are each taught by two teachers.

Do you provide meals for your students? We offer hot lunches from a private caterer. Kid-friendly meals, including chicken tenders, salad, fruit, mac and cheese, pizza, and more, are delivered daily fresh from the caterer.

Can parents visit the school before, during, and after a child is enrolled? We conduct tours daily between 9:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. We also maintain an open-door policy. Parents are welcome to share their talents, skills, or experiences in the classroom. We encourage families to visit the classroom for as long as needed before a child begins our program to help him/her make a smooth transition into the school. The Boulevard School continues to ensure each child receives an individualized program addressing his/her skill level. We nurture the whole child, treating parents as partners in the child's development. A dedicated team of teachers and staff help students explore his/her environment in a meaningful way. We develop each student’s love of lear ning along with the fundamental skills they’ll need to successfully navigate through future academic years. n The Boulevard School 23022 Victory Blvd. Woodland Hills 818.883.0607 boulevardschool.com FB: theboulevardschool

True Horse Power at the Bell Canyon

Equestrian Center

To ride a horse is to truly feel alive as you canter unfettered beneath blue skies. Throughout history, horse and rider have created one of the best marriages between human and beast. From ancient warriors on horseback to the valiant

riders of the Pony Express, this dynamic duo has developed a unique relationship that continues to this day. Fortunately, those living in the Conejo and San Fernando valleys can still ride this noble animal thanks to the Bell Canyon Association, a gated neighborhood with 27 miles of trails originally designed as an equestrian community and bordered by the serene Simi Hills. Since 1969, the Bell Canyon Equestrian Center (BCEC) has served as one of the area’s few full-service equestrian facilities. Bell Canyon residents and guest boarders can experience a variety of training, including English hunter/jumper, show jumping, and eventing. The BCEC is home to award-winning trainers Kelly Jennings of Cellardoor Equestrian and Mark Bone of Huntover. The only facility of its type ever designed and built by renowned architect Cliff May, the world-class BCEC has been under major renovations over the last year, including the main building. Thanks to the leadership of Bell Canyon Board of Directors Lisa Riccomini and Geoff Abadee, both the Main Arena and the Hillside Arena have new, premium, all-weather footing. The BCEC’s gorgeous grounds include four recently renovated barns with 74 box stalls, 14 updated pipe stalls, a refurbished round pen, wash racks, large turnouts, and sun pens, as well as a superb shaded picnic area and courtyard for all to enjoy.

166

Calabasas Style

The BCEC is also home to the Bell Canyon Riding Academy (BCRA), which welcomes everyone, from beginners to advanced riders, children, and adults. Designed to develop educated, well-rounded riders, the BCRA aims to create a positive, lifelong connection between rider and horse. The staff fosters a fun, instructive environment, where correct principles are taught from the beginning and safety is a top priority. A 30-minute private lesson starts at $60 for residents and $65 for non-residents. The BCRA also provides semi-private group lessons and very popular Pony Camps several times a year, where kids can learn how to ride and care for horses. The school horses include Mia, a distinguished California equitation horse, and Rushmore, a patient mount who spent many years as a Boy Scouts horse, trail horse, and special companion to troubled youths. Besides the magic of the Bell Canyon landscape, it is the love and stewardship of the residents in Bell Canyon who have contributed to the renaissance of the equestrian center that have made it a lovely and loved feature of Bell Canyon. n Bell Canyon Equestrian Center 29 Baymare Rd. DAVENPORT'S RESTAURANT: APPLE GLAZED TOMAHAWK PORK CHOPS Ingredients 1 Granny Smith apple 1 Apricot 1 Diced sweet onion Thyme Crushed black peppercorns 1/2 cup Apple cider 1 tsp. Apple cider vinegar 1 tsp. Brandy 2 oz. Apricot preserves

Directions Sweat the onions in a pot for 10 minutes, then add all of the ingredients except the apricot preserves into the same pot. Bring to a simmer, until it reduces by half. Remove from heat and stir in apricot preserves. This should give it a nice glaze and alleviate any added sugar to this simple recipe. Devenport’s uses Red Duroc pork, not Berkshire pork, as we feel it is the best. The pork is grilled over oak until it reads 150°. Rest grilled pork for 4 minutes and top each piece with 2 ounces of the glaze. Serve immediately.

MEDITERRANEO: BUTTERSCOTCH PUDDING

THE STONEHAUS: FALL QUINOA SALAD

Ingredients

Ingredients

Serving Size: 6 6 egg yolks 2 oz. butter 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1/3 tsp. vanilla extract 2 1/3 cup heavy cream Garnish: Whipped cream Caramel sauce (recipe follow), sea salt, roasted peanuts

Serving Size: 6 1/2 bunch Tuscan kale (also called lacinato kale), washed, stems removed and leaves cut into 1” strips 1 cup quinoa, rinsed well 1/4 cup blanched hazelnuts 4 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup crumbled goat cheese 1 scallion, washed and sliced thin 2 1/2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

Directions In a large bowl whisk together the egg yolks and set aside. Melt the butter over medium heat, whisk in the brown sugar and salt, stir in the vanilla and cook over medium heat until sugar darkens slightly and takes on a caramel fragrance, about 5 minutes. Turn the heat to medium low and whisk in the cream pouring slowly. The sugar will harden but will dissolve as you stir. Stir until it just begins to boil. Remove from heat and temper with egg yolks. Strain and pour into serving containers. Bake in water bath at 325 covered until custards are just set but still jiggly about 50 min. Caramel Sauce 1 cup sugar 1/4 cup water 1/4 of a stick butter 3/4 cup heavy cream Combine sugar and water in heavy bottom pan and cook until deep amber. Add the butter and stir until it melts and is well-blended. Add the cream a little at a time and stir, the sugar will harden but melt again. Stir until completely smooth. To serve top with a dollop of whipped cream, sprinkle with Maldon Salt, or other sea salt, drizzle with caramel sauce and chopped roasted peanuts.

Mediterraneo

Directions Heat 1 tbsp. of olive oil in a sauce pan and cook quinoa over medium heat until lightly toasted, about 2 minutes. Add 1 3/4 cups water (or use low-sodium chicken broth) and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, covered, until the liquid is absorbed, 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and let sit, covered, about 2 minutes. Meanwhile, “massage” the kale strips with 1 tbsp. of olive oil by rubbing between fingers until glossy and tender. Toast the hazelnuts in a skillet over medium-high heat, stirring, until golden, about 3 minutes; transfer to a plate. Add the remaining olive oil and garlic to the skillet and cook over medium heat, stirring, until golden, about 2 minutes. Transfer the garlic to the plate, reserving the oil. Fluff the quinoa with a fork and spread on a sheet tray to cool. When quinoa is cool add the nuts, garlic, reserved oil, parsley, mint, cranberries, goat cheese, kale, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper and toss. Adjust with additional lemon juice or olive oil if necessary.

Old Bay seasoning 2 tbsp. charred scallions (we recommend taking scallions and putting them on the grill to char them, it really adds to the flavor) 2 tsp. fresh chopped parsley

Mastro's Thousand Oaks

Where Everyone Knows Your Name 182

Calabasas Style

By Lori Berezin At Mastro’s Steakhouse in Thousand Oaks, everyone strives to create “Guests for Life.” If the succulent steaks and savory seafood don’t convince, the expert service and sophisticated atmosphere should. From the moment you enter the dining room, with its warm tones and rich black leather upholstery, you’ll feel a sense of anticipation. Perhaps you’d like to begin with a cocktail in the piano lounge or head straight into the dining room for some caviar or succulent lobster cocktail. Try their traditional heirloom tomato and burrata salad or the Spicy Mambo Salad for something a bit jazzier. Follow it up with a main course of Chilean sea bass, Alaskan king crab legs, or perfectly cooked twin lobster tails. Steak lovers will feel they’ve gone to heaven as they savor the out-of-this-world, 48-ounce, double-cut, porterhouse, juicy filet, available in three sizes, or tender rack of lamb with a side of Alaskan king crab, black truffle gnocchi, or colossal onion rings. Just when you feel you’ve had enough, the waiter tempts you with Mastro’s signature warm butter cake or a Johnnie Walker flight tray with that evening’s featured dessert. Treat yourself and your guests to some sweet sorbet or gelato and call it a night. Or listen to a few tunes in the piano lounge, offering music nightly from 6:30 p.m. to closing. Enjoy the Elderflower Martini or the Lemon Ginger Smash, a tangy mixture of Grey Goose Le Citron vodka, agave nectar, fresh lemon, Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur, and mint, served tall with a splash of Fever-Tree club soda. Or sample one of the featured cocktails or craft beer and toast your good fortune. The Thousand Oaks location of this legendary restaurant opened more than a decade ago on November 10, 2006. Situated in the heart of the city, directly across from the busy Civic Arts Plaza, it quickly gained a loyal following. So reservations are recommended, especially during the weekend. Remember to dress up. There’s a bit of a dress code in this upscale eatery. Mastro’s rigorously trains its staff on the food, wine, and spirits. Everyone, from the executive chef to the maître d', goes above and beyond to make diners feel right at home, only better. It’s easy to see why guests return again and again for a romantic evening or special occasion. There’s also a semi-private dining area that holds up to 180 guests, perfect for holiday gatherings and other celebrations. The restaurant is open for dinner only. While they feature different items each night, the steak and seafood menu remains essentially constant. It’s nice to know what to expect, especially when Mastro’s always aims to exceed expectations. n Mastro’s Steakhouse 2087 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. Thousand Oaks 805.418.1811 mastrosrestaurants.com

15th Annual Motor4Toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive

By Dustin Troyan thal Photographyby Tommy Huth & David Rosen

The 15th Annual Motor4Toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive will take place on Sunday, December 2, at Pierce College. The presenting sponsor of the event is the Keyes Automotive Group who will be adding tremendous value to the event and toy drive. The car community and community at large always supports this great event by coming out in record numbers. Cars from all over the Western United States will show up with cars packed with toys to donate to underprivileged children. It has become an annual tradition for thousands of people, and we will collect tens of thousands of toys! This year, we have a new venue, Pierce College. We expect to fill every single spot at the college with show cars. Just about every car club imaginable comes out to support the event, from Ferraris and Lamborghinis to classics, imports, hot rods, 4x4s, and everything in between. Over the last 14 years, Motor4Toys has collected well over $5,000,000 in toys distributed to children in need all over the state. A little grassroots movement has turned into one of the largest toy drives in the state. Motor4Toys has continued to grow outside of the car community. Partnering with schools, businesses, clubs, and volunteer organizations, it is the foundation’s goal to include as many people as possible who can assist during the holiday season. Our goal is to grow outside of the car community and to hopefully cover the entire state of California, helping as many kids as possible. We would also like to dedicate this year’s event to our good friend Jim Ring. You are missed and loved. For more information, to participate, or donate, please visit motor4toys.com. n

Riomaggiore: Rustic Cuisine to the East Nestled in a valley, the easternmost Riomaggiore is alive with medieval churches whispering tales of ages past and authentic local cuisine, including delicate anchovies fished daily from nearby seas; focaccia bread, which originated in this region; and pasta al pesto, created lovingly with local basil, garlic, pine nuts, and olive oil. Drink in the scenery along the tiny harbor.

Cinque Terre National Park The stunning Cinque Terre region is also a national park, with more than 75 miles of glorious trails. You can crisscross the area or take the coastal route that once linked all five villages— known as Sentiero Azzurro. The pathway between Manarola and Corniglia, however, is currently closed. Many also visit via cruise ship or train through long tunnels first carved during the 1870s. Whichever way you arrive, you’re likely to leave with one word in mind: magnifico! n
