DONOR HONOR ROLL

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Dear Cal Athletics Family, The resiliency and the determination of the Cal Athletics community never ceases to amaze me! While this has been a difficult year, I am proud of how we have come together to face the challenges and opportunities to support exceptional experiences for our student-athletes. We are grateful for the collective strength of the Cal community to help us weather the pandemic and maintain our high standard of excellence by supporting the Roll On campaign (see page 23 for details). Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2019-20 school year was filled with many highlights. Before the pandemic, we were rolling — the Axe returned to Berkeley, we won the Redbox Bowl, our basketball programs were peaking during the conference tournaments, and our swimming and diving teams were primed to challenge for national championships. Additionally, our men’s and women’s soccer teams qualified for the NCAA Championships. Certainly more team and individual success was ahead for our Bears, but the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff carried us through the disappointment of the sports world coming to an abrupt halt.

As we return to competition, the campus-wide Light the Way campaign to build a stronger Berkeley continues to be a focal point for Cal Athletics. We have raised $230 million of our $350 million objective to support our three bold goals: exceptional studentathlete experiences, team and individual competitive success, and attracting and retaining the best people. Your generosity and loyalty play pivotal roles in shaping an athletic department that is the model of comprehensive excellence in intercollegiate athletics that we can all be proud of for generations to come. On behalf of Cal Athletics, I am excited to present the annual report for fiscal year 2020 (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020). We are grateful for your passionate dedication to helping our student-athletes reach their goals while in Berkeley and to preparing them for postgraduation success. Together, we showed that every gift truly matters

From an academic standpoint, Cal posted a record-high Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for the fourth-consecutive year with the score rising to 87 percent in the latest data released in November 2020. Overall, six teams achieved 100 percent, and 11 programs finished at or above the 90-percent mark. For the most recent Academic Progress Rate scores, 16 programs earned a 1,000 APR for the 2018-19 academic year to match Cal’s best-ever total. On an individual level, our Golden Bears garnered 216 academic all-conference honors, two academic All-America accolades and 18 academic all-district selections. These are outstanding accomplishments at the world’s No. 1 public university.

as we raised more than $36 million in essential resources to support annual funds, endowments, the Gender Equity campaign for new softball and beach volleyball facilities, the Cameron Institute and other initiatives. We hope you will continue to remain safe and healthy as we eagerly anticipate being reunited in person in 2021. Stay connected, and we will roll on because of you. Go Bears!

PHILANTHROPIC SUCCESS The Cal Athletics family inspired us with its commitment to support all 850 of our studentathletes. The Cal Athletics Fund is excited to have raised $36,069,047 in gifts and pledges this past fiscal year to enhance Cal Athletics’ mission to be the model for intercollegiate excellence.

During this past year, nearly $11 million in gifts to our department’s annual funds directly shaped our student-athletes’ experiences. Additionally, we received more than $15 million in commitments for endowment support, providing long-term benefits for current and future Golden Bears.

We are grateful for everyone’s enthusiastic commitment to build our championship culture. Behind the support of 6,776 donors who accounted for 12,494 gifts and pledges, the Cal Athletics Fund surpassed its original $35 million goal and eclipsed the $30 million mark for the second straight year.

Seven gifts, which each hit or exceeded the $1 million mark, provided transformational impacts for Cal Athletics. Lynda Brothers ’68 made an estate gift of $10.8 million to support scholarships for six women’s sports teams — one of the largest single-donor gifts ever to Cal. Former Cal Director of Women’s Athletics Luella Lilly made a legacy gift of $1.275 million to create the Dr. Luella J. Lilly Academic-Athletic Excellence Award Endowment Fund and to support two current softball endowment funds. Stu Gordon ’62 & ’65 gifted $1.1 million from his estate to enhance his tremendous support of our baseball program.

With new financial challenges facing Cal Athletics due to the COVID-19 pandemic, your support is now more crucial than ever. Despite the tough times, we are pleased to report that we have raised $230 million of our $350 million Light the Way campaign goal (65.7%), through Dec. 2020, with a deadline of the end of 2023. It is exciting to see our student-athlete alumni thrive after graduation and subsequently decide to help current Golden Bears pursue their dreams. Of note, 1,487 student-athlete alumni made gifts in fiscal year 2020, including 133 first-time supporters. All told, 1,024 first-time donors collectively gave $3,865,257 (average gift of $3,775).

Dr. Luella Lilly, former Cal Director of Women’s Athletics

of the program’s first head coach — thanks to a pair of $1 million gifts from Tom Shaffer ’79 and his mother, Abby, and Emily ’81 Risberg and her husband, Jeff Risberg. Special thanks to Rodney Friedman ’56 for continuing his family’s outstanding support of Cal men’s rowing — this time with a $1 million gift to create a scholarship in honor of his late wife, Shirley Friedman. Friedman’s efforts were supported by the Rogers family, whose steadfast support and leadership are synonymous with Cal men’s rowing.

Cementing their Cal Athletics’ academic legacy, Pat and Kent ’60 & ’64 Newmark contributed $1 million to endow the Newmark Awards — recognizing team academic excellence — in perpetuity.

We took significant strides this past year towards funding new modern facilities for our softball and beach volleyball programs, driven by the leadership of Bill Ausfahl ’61, Lynda

In 2020, we celebrated the establishment of the first Cal women’s head coaching endowment — the Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey in honor

Brothers ’68, Brad Brian ’74 and many other supporters. The Gender Equity campaign has made great progress, and through your continued generosity, we hope to break ground on both transformative endeavors in 2021. Inspired by a tremendous $12.5 million lead gift from Bryan Cameron in fiscal year 2019, the Cameron Institute launched this fall after more than a year of planning (see page 17 for details). Our student-athletes depend on the passionate support of the Cal community to achieve academic and athletic success. Every gift matters and inspires us to help current and future generations reach their full potential at Cal and beyond.

NEWMARK AWARDS

• Student-athletes were declared in 77 different majors across campus.

The awards were established by generous supporters Kent ’60 & ’64 and Pat Newmark 14 years ago to recognize academic excellence in our 30 sports. The Newmarks endowed the awards program in early 2020, guaranteeing that their family’s name will be synonymous with Cal academic excellence for years to come.

• Among the 15 most popular majors for student-athletes, nine are also the most popular for all undergraduate students, including business administration, political science, economics, molecular and cell biology, cognitive science and mechanical engineering.

Football received the Newmark Award for Most Improved GPA for the second straight year. GRADUATION SUCCESS RATE • Based upon the most recent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) released in November 2020, Cal posted its highest ever mark with 87% of its student-athletes who entered the university on athletic aid between 2010-2013 graduating within the measured six-year period.

The 2019-20 team winners for highest GPA were: Men’s Crew (3.284, large team) Women’s Soccer (3.558, large team) Men’s Golf (3.332, small team) Women’s Tennis (3.432, small team)

• Six teams earned 100% graduation rates — women’s golf (2nd year in a row), women’s gymnastics (4th year in a row), softball (highest ever and up 12% over last year), men’s tennis (5th year in a row), women’s tennis (8th year in a row), and volleyball (9th year in a row). • Women’s basketball’s GSR of 90% is its highest in the last 10 years and up 11% over last year. Men’s basketball’s GSR of 86% is its highest ever and up 22% over last year. • Football’s GSR of 80% is its highest ever, up 36% over the last seven years and up 5% over last year.

BEARS GIVE BACK HICKS FIGHTS FOR THOSE IN NEED A GOLDEN HEART CAL DEFENSIVE BACK CREATES CAMPAIGN FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES AFFECTED BY COVID-19

JORDAN FINES HAS USED HER TIME AT CAL TO HELP THE COMMUNITY

program will be overseen by the organization.

Towards the end of her freshman term, Cal softball student-athlete Jordan Fines, who graduated in May 2020 with a sociology degree, and her roommates realized they had a lot of leftover non-perishable food. They didn’t want to let it go to waste, so they collected the food — nearly 100 Ziploc bags worth — and handed them out to people in need, from side streets and freeway underpasses in Oakland to People’s Park.

“We’re so inspired by Elijah’s willingness to get involved and help kids,” said Jessica Bomberg, Associate Director of Peer-To-Peer Fundraising at No Kid Hungry. “We believe that everyone has a strength to share and can do their part to make a big impact in their own community and nationwide. Elijah is a great example of that.” Never has intercepting poverty been so important to Cal defensive back Elijah Hicks. The senior established his own non-profit called Intercept Poverty in 2019 to help college students in need. With that same spirit of altruism, Hicks has partnered with another nonprofit, No Kid Hungry, to help raise money for low-income families during the COVID-19 crisis. “When this came out and I saw all the schools shutting down, I knew there would be a lot of struggling parents out there that all of a sudden had to stay home and wouldn’t have time to prepare for it,” Hicks said. “A lot of people wouldn’t get paid sick leave and would have to file for unemployment. With all the chaos going on in the world, at least we can find a way to have a positive impact on someone’s life.”

Intercept Poverty was born from firsthand experience. Growing up with 10 siblings in Long Beach, California, Hicks and his family didn’t always have a lot of resources at their disposal. Hicks recognizes his football ability earned him the opportunities he has now at the No. 1 public university in the world, but acknowledges the majority of people in similar situations may not be blessed with the same fortunes.

The endeavor inspired Fines and teammate Zoe Conley to begin the Pay It Forward campaign the following year. Including their friends and other Cal student-athletes, they produced enough food to feed approximately 50 people in the downtown Oakland area. They also donated other essential items, including socks, water bottles, rain ponchos and hygiene products.

Hicks started the non-profit to aid college students in need. He also volunteers at the Basic Needs Center on campus.

Although she was part of the process with her, Conley, who graduated in 2019 and is now a paralegal at a property management agency in Berkeley, gives all the credit to Fines.

When Hicks started thinking of ways to help during the COVID-19 crisis, he spent a lot of time on the phone with his dad, Tony. That helped him flesh out the idea, which he then passed on to his athletic counterparts.

Within 48 hours of collegiate sports being shut down across the country, Hicks came up with the idea to solicit the platform of teammates and fellow Pac-12 student-athletes to make the case to help those less fortunate during the coronavirus outbreak.

“I understand the platform student-athletes have,” Hicks said. “What better way to get some teammates and fellow players around the Pac who I respect to come together for a certain cause and do this for low-income families. I thought it would be pretty powerful.”

All donations related to Hicks’ campaign go directly to No Kid Hungry, whose mission is to end childhood hunger across the country. One hundred percent of the money raised by Hicks’

Hicks’ original goal was to raise $10,000, which was met after only a few days. Hick’s Intercept Poverty COVID-19 campaign has raised more than $66,000 as of December 1, 2020.

In addition to helping the homeless community, Fines made a tremendous impact in numerous ways during her time at Cal. The native of Elk Grove, California, also co-founded the first ever women’s club in collegiate athletics at Cal known as Golden Girls, whose goal is to further unite all women involved in the university’s athletics department, from student-athletes to coaches to administration. A true ambassador for the school, Fines found herself filling the role as an advocate for the university both athletically and academically. Fines aspires to be a leader in education. Her post-graduation plans include working for

8

Teach for America in the California Capital Valley as an elementary school teacher while working towards getting her master’s degree in education from Loyola Marymount University. An active mentor for children at elementary schools, Fines’ source of inspiration to pursue a career in education came after taking a sociology of poverty class, where she learned about disparities in educational systems and institutions. Fines’ desire to help any way possible has also been found on the softball field, particularly during her junior campaign in 2019 when she earned a role as a reliable utility player. While she enjoyed a breakout season, she also battled Lyme disease after being diagnosed in September of 2018. Despite the health issues presenting a difficult hurdle, Fines is pleased with how she thrived academically and athletically after the diagnosis. The experience led her to appreciate the opportunities she had at Cal, and her motivation and drive would not let the circumstances hold her back.

THE RIGHT THING TO DO

ACCEPTING THE CHALLENGE

CAL DUO PROVIDES RESOURCES TO LOCAL YOUTH FOR REMOTE LEARNING

MICHAEL SAFFELL CARRIES ON PATRICK LAIRD’S READING PROGRAM

Garrett Dunn and Lucas Allen knew there was work to be done. The question was, how?

Former Cal running back Patrick Laird has been opening up plenty of eyes in Miami, where he made the Dolphins’ roster as an undrafted free agent. Current Cal center Michael Saffell, one of Laird’s close friends, kept in touch with Laird throughout the NFL preseason in 2019 and marveled at his efforts to make the roster. Not that Laird was interested in talking about that. “I’ll say, ‘Hey, great touchdown,’ and he’ll say, ‘How’s the reading program going?’” Saffell said. The reading program is none other than the one Laird started last year before his senior year at Cal. An avid reader, Laird is concerned with the reading loss that occurs among children who don’t pick up any books during the summer. So he created the “Patrick Laird Summer Reading Challenge,” a program that entices youngsters to read over the summer and earn tickets to a Cal football game. The program exploded in its first year, with 3,500 tickets going to participants in the challenge for the season opener against North Carolina. When he graduated in May, Laird knew he

had to find the right person to continue to spearhead the program. He didn’t have to think about it very long before choosing Saffell.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the Bay Area, Dunn and Allen, the sophomores on the Cal men’s water polo and football teams, respectively, found themselves motivated to help socioeconomically disadvantaged K-12 students continue their academic development through remote learning.

Truth be told, Laird wasn’t really stringing Saffell along. Laird always knew Saffell would make a great heir apparent to take over the program. Laird launched the Reading Challenge in April of 2018 and that summer did over 25 speaking engagements at schools and camps, promoting the challenge and imparting the importance of reading to kids. Saffell, with the help of former teammate Henry Bazakas, has also made about 25 appearances, and Cal had over 2,500 tickets redeemed from challenge participants at the 2019 season opener against UC Davis.

Their solution was Team Educational Development (TED), a charity organization that collected over 3,000 books during an April 11 book drive. Allen called Dunn, and within 48 hours, the best friends were putting TED in motion. To promote TED and the book drive, the group created a website and spread the word through their personal Instagram profiles.

Like Laird in previous years, Saffell met and spoke to the children who participated in the challenge after the game against UC Davis. Saffell, a senior, hopes to continue to grow the program.

The group set up two ways to collect the books while abiding by proper social distancing guidelines, offering a pick-up service from people’s doorsteps and providing a three-hour drop-off window at the Safeway supermarket in Moraga, California. TED collected over 3,000 books, far more than their anticipated range of 500-1,000.

Saffell added afterschool programs to the list of destinations for the program last year, as well as local YMCAs, basketball and baseball programs. Laird served as a mentor to guide the process.

9

Lucas Allen The response to the book drive led to a pair of partnerships between TED and the Berkeley Public Schools Fund and GO Public Schools Oakland to help with distribution efforts. TED was a direct result of the community service efforts that Dunn and Allen were already involved with at Cal. Before the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily halted the programs, the pair had served hot meals to community members at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and was involved in UC Berkeley’s SAGE Mentorship Project at Oxford Elementary School, where they provided oneon-one mentoring to local youth. Dunn and Allen’s efforts to engage with their community also tie into a core principal of being a Cal student-athlete. As Bay Area communities continue to be impacted by COVID-19, there’s still work to be done through TED. The 3,000-plus collected books were transitioned to the Berkeley Public Schools Fund, which handled the distribution to families and children in need of the books. TED has shifted its focus to its next project — a technology drive for used laptops, tablets and home Wi-Fi systems. It’s uncertain what TED will be in the long term, but both Golden Bears want to continue building it into a vehicle for change. To make a donation through TED, visit tedfoundation.wixsite.com/bookdrive.

DONOR HIGHLIGHTS A PERFECT MATCH LYNDA BROTHERS (‘68) MAKES TRANSFORMATIONAL GIFT TO CAL ATHLETICS Lynda Brothers might have been the best female athlete walking around the UC Berkeley campus back in the late 1960s, but every once in a while she met her match. Brothers, while playing for Cal’s women’s tennis team, used to practice at the Hearst Tennis Courts. Turns out the husband of the world’s No. 1 women’s tennis player at the time was a student at the nearby Boalt Law School (now BerkeleyLaw). Now and then, Billie Jean (Moffitt) King made an appearance at Hearst and hit with Brothers. Brothers had a lot of fun at Cal, and the impact the campus made on her was life-changing — so much so that she is dedicated to giving back to the university. In an extraordinary example of her commitment to Cal’s future, Brothers has gifted Cal Athletics approximately $10.8 million via her estate to support six women’s sports teams on campus. It’s one of the largest single-donor gifts the department has ever received, and will be transformational to Intercollegiate Athletics at UC Berkeley. Brothers’ gift will endow scholarships for women’s basketball, women’s tennis, softball, volleyball, women’s golf, and field hockey.

Brother serves as co-chair of a Gender Equity project that is raising funds for new facilities for softball and beach volleyball. She also funded a women’s basketball scholarship in 2014 and has supported women’s golf and women’s tennis in the past. “Lynda has been a friend of our program for many years, as well as our broader women’s athletic program,” Cal head women’s golf coach Nancy McDaniel said. “The interest and care that she has chosen for all of our programs is impactful, and knowing that this gift is in our future gives us a feeling of stability and hope for funding all the women’s sports at a very high level at Cal.” Brothers received her degree in genetics from Cal in 1968 before earning a master’s in biology from Virginia in 1971 and her law degree from Golden Gate University in 1976. She went on to a superlative career as an environmental lawyer, making huge impacts in both the private and public sectors. Brothers attended Cal before the presence of varsity sports for women. While sports was a huge part of her life during her time in Berkeley, she said it was her experience as a student that provided the primary motivation

for giving back to the athletics department. “Berkeley was just a life-changing experience for me,” Brothers said. “It’s just an incredible place that has done a lot for me. You don’t have a sense of how capable you are until you go to a place like Berkeley. It was intellectually challenging. When you realize you can do all this at a place like Berkeley, it’s confidence-building.” At 5-foot-11 and athletic, Brothers can’t help but wonder what she may have been able to accomplish with the advances that have been made for the female athlete since she left college. But she was still able to take the lessons learned from her time as a Golden Bear and apply them to her law career. “My life would have been so different if some of the progress that we have seen in the last 10-20 years took place when I was younger,” Brothers said. “Sports was not a career option for me. But I can’t stress enough how important sports are for women. One of the reasons I’ve had success in a male-dominated profession is all of my years in sports. I understood teamwork. Sports were immeasurable in the value of my career.” Lynda Brothers ’68

DONOR HIGHLIGHTS SECURING AN ACADEMIC FUTURE KENT AND PAT NEWMARK ENDOW THE NEWMARK AWARDS IN PERPETUITY Since 2007, Pat and Kent Newmark have been rewarding Cal’s athletic teams for academic success. They now have made sure that the tradition will last forever. The Newmarks have made a $1 million gift to Cal Athletics to endow the Newmark Awards in perpetuity. The awards are given annually to the athletic programs on campus with the highest cumulative grade point average in different categories. Each winning team earns a grant to include in the program’s operating budget. “We’re not getting any younger, so we decided to endow it in perpetuity and won’t have to worry about it,” said Kent Newmark, who graduated from Cal in 1960 after competing in tennis and track and field for the Golden Bears. “Both of us have always felt that academics and athletics are

a very important part of college life. This is a way to combine them.” The Newmarks, who have been honored as Builders of Berkeley, are long-time supporters of Cal Athletics. Some of their generous leadership gifts have recently focused on the men’s and women’s tennis and golf programs, as well as Cal softball. The Newmark Awards were originally established to honor the top academic male and female team on campus, along with the most improved, with a grant. The program was expanded in 2018 to reward a large team and small team from each gender. Cal’s football team won last year’s most improved award. “Kent and Pat have set a phenomenal example regarding the important role academics play in

The Newmarks (center) with Cal Beach Volleyball

shaping post-collegiate success,” Cal football coach Justin Wilcox said. “Winning last year’s Newmark Award for most improved team GPA meant a lot to each player in our program. We are proud of the progress we have made in the classroom and on the field, and will continue to place an emphasis on well-rounded success at Cal.” Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton’s enthusiasm was one of the reasons Kent and Pat were inspired to endow the awards. “The importance of this award was really magnified when Jim took over,” Kent Newmark said. “He seemed to acknowledge how important it was. He’s been a force behind the enthusiasm of the coaches and studentathletes. It’s a credit to him. Without his impetus, we may not have endowed the award.” Past Newmark Award winners have utilized the financial grant for such things as unique team building activities or program-specific needs that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. The Newmarks have also spent time visiting

with the winning teams and getting to know coaches and student-athletes. “Kent and Pat have set the bar high for academic and athletic excellence at Cal, which supports my goal of challenging our studentathletes to be the best they can be in the classroom and in the pool,” said Cal women’s swimming head coach Teri McKeever, whose team won the Newmark Award for female large teams in 2019. The Newmarks said they have heard from various Cal coaches that winning the award has become a source of internal competition among Golden Bear athletic programs. “As we started hanging around the athletes more and more, we realized how much effort they put into everything they do,” Pat Newmark said. “Cal has such a fine reputation academically, and they maintain not only that, but strive so hard to excel at their sport, too. We really stand in awe of all the student-athletes. We think they’re the best.”

DONOR HIGHLIGHTS FIRST CAL WOMEN’S SPORT COACH POSITION ENDOWED THE DONNA FONG DIRECTOR OF FIELD HOCKEY CREATED WITH TWO $1 MILLION GIFTS

Shellie Onstead (left) and Donna Fong, Cal Field Hockey

In the fall of 1980, a fledgling field hockey team in only its fifth season of existence made a run all the way to the national championship final. Now, nearly 40 years later, two members of that team are giving back in a way that will help support the program for another 40 years — or longer. Thanks to a pair of $1 million gifts from Tom Shaffer and his mother, Abby, and Emily Risberg and her husband, Jeff, field hockey will become the first women’s sport at Cal to have its head coaching position endowed. From now on, the position will be known as the Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey, named in honor of the Golden Bears’ first head coach. Both Tom Shaffer and Emily Risberg have long connections to Cal field hockey, dating back to when they were students in Berkeley during the early years of the team’s existence. Risberg was a midfielder for the Bears, while Shaffer served as the team’s assistant coach. Under Fong’s

guidance, they helped the program achieve its highest finish ever with a runner-up performance in the 1980 AIAW national tournament.

Fong at a summer field hockey camp as a young teenager. The impression Fong made continues to this day.

As a student at Cal, Shaffer was a member of the junior varsity men’s basketball team for two years before learning the sport of field hockey. He continued to play after graduation and made several appearances with the U.S. National Team. Shaffer earned his degree in chemical engineering in 1979, then officially joined Cal field hockey as Fong’s assistant coach in 1980.

“I would have never dreamed that she would ultimately be my coach,” said Risberg, who, with Jeff, also honored Fong in 2015 by establishing the Donna Fong Scholarship Fund given each year to support a deserving student-athlete. “I was so impressed by her because she just had this quiet style about her. Her technical knowledge of the game was just amazing.”

During his stint with the Bears, he embarked on his professional career with Chevron. Over the ensuing years, he stayed close to Cal field hockey, and he remains passionate to this day about ensuring gender equity in sports.

Fong oversaw the Cal field hockey program for 19 seasons, beginning with the team’s initial campaign in 1976. She guided the team to the postseason seven times before her retirement in 1994. Over her final three seasons, Fong led Cal to three conference titles, earning NorPac Coach of the Year each time.

“I’m very supportive of the field hockey program, and I’m very supportive of Donna,” Tom Shaffer said. “I appreciate having the connection to Cal and being able to do things to impact Cal. I feel this is something we can leverage to help get people to support women’s athletics and the field hockey program. It’s a great activity and a great program in need of support.” Risberg played for the Bears through the 1980 season, graduating in 1981 with her degree in nutrition and food science. While she spent the majority of her career in the bioinstrumentation and biotech fields, she has continued to support the sport of field hockey, even coaching it for 10 years at the high school level. Risberg’s desire to honor the legacy of her college coach dates back to when she first met

22

From left: Tom Shaffer, Donna Fong, Courtney Dolder and Emily Risberg

Over the course of her career, Fong coached seven All-Americans, and her players earned all-conference honors 52 times. During the historic 1980 season, the roster featured Onstead and future two-time Olympian Marcy Place. Onstead succeeded Fong in 1995 and recently completed her 25th season as head coach. She had her own Olympic moment in 2008 when she served as an assistant coach for the U.S. team in Beijing. The field hockey position is the third coaching endowment at Cal, following the establishment of the Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men’s Golf announced in 2016 and the Director of Men’s Tennis created by an anonymous donor in 2018.

ROLL ON CAMPAIGN Join the Roll On Campaign and help us tackle the COVID-19 pandemic! Resources from Roll On will be invested into three priorities:

PEOPLE

PROGRAMS

Before the pandemic hit, Cal was rolling. Our basketball programs showed their growth in the Pac-12 tournaments, the swimming and diving and gymnastics teams were primed for strong postseason campaigns, and we were on the path to a balanced budget for the first time in over a decade. While the pursuit of excellence and the drive to provide our student-athletes with a worldclass experience has never wavered, the pandemic has brought unexpected challenges to Cal.

PREVENTION

Cal Athletics is facing a projected revenue shortfall of $31-$36 million for 2020-21. This shortfall stems from a variety of factors, primarily sparked by limited competition and the increased costs brought on by the pandemic for new health and safety measures taken throughout all athletic training and facilities. We have already taken measures to mitigate the revenue shortfall, such as a hiring freeze, a pause in merit increases, voluntary temporary salary decreases for the highest earners, significant budget reductions, among others. However, all of our efforts are not enough and we need your help to close the gap.

In response, we launched the Roll On campaign, a department-wide initiative to meet the challenges of the pandemic and continue to support our student-athletes. During a given year, our goal is to raise $10 million in annual gifts as one part of our overall efforts to support the student-athlete experience. For 2020-21, we are calling on the Cal community to stretch that to $15 million so that we can continue to roll on through this pandemic. The additional resources provided will allow us to invest in the three priorites of People, Programs, and Prevention, and effectively respond to the pandemic while continuing to maintain an exceptional and safe experience for our student-athletes.

“With your help, we will Roll On through this pandemic and together will emerge stronger than ever.” – Jim Knowlton, Director of Athletics
