Dear Friend of Cal Athletics, We hope you and your family are healthy and safe during this unprecedented year. Despite the abrupt end to some teams’ seasons, the 2019-20 school year will be remembered for many Golden Bear athletic accomplishments, including the Axe returning to Berkeley and a victory in the Redbox Bowl! While health and safety concerns from the pandemic have delayed our fall competitions, we are thrilled to have our student-athletes back on campus training and are excited to start competitions in November with football and men’s and women’s basketball. Driven by dedicated supporters like you, Cal strives to be the model for comprehensive excellence in intercollegiate athletics. Your gift helps us provide exceptional student-athlete experiences, fuels competitive success, and enhances our efforts to attract and retain the best people to help our young men and women maximize their full potential. Please consider a “Light the Way” campaign gift (details on p. 9-10) that is meaningful to you to support the Cal Athletics Fund or one of our 30 sports programs. Your support is more important now than ever. You are receiving this guide because you gave at the Cal Club level or above during the 2020 Fiscal Year (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020). We will be offering virtual events until conditions change to thank our dedicated supporters for their unwavering support. Details will be emailed to members as events are announced. The guide includes information about the impact of your generosity, studentathletes’ accomplishments, and background about traditional member benefits that we look forward to resuming. We deeply appreciate all that you do to support our student-athletes as they pursue well-rounded success at the world’s No. 1 public institution. On behalf of the Cal Athletics family, thank you for your steadfast commitment, and we look forward to staying engaged with you virtually this fall. Go Bears!

student-athlete alumni spotlight Francesca Weems TRACK & FIELD / ’09 AND ’11 KAILUA-KONA, HI
Attending UC Berkeley was one of the biggest honors of my life. Growing up, people doubted I would attend college because statistics show that only 2 of 10 foster children succeed, while the rest often end up homeless, in jail or dead. However, sports and academics became my opportunity to challenge the status quo. Today, I am a proud Cal alumna with a bachelor’s in mass communications (2009) and a master’s in education (2011). I am appreciative of the Cal Athletics staff, my dedicated coaches and teammates, and generous donors. These individuals helped make my dream of working in communications a reality. Cal opened many doors for me. I was CalBears.com’s first multimedia journalist, was tapped to host the “Cal Sports Report” and continued on to work for ESPN. These opportunities launched my career as a producer and sports journalist for stations in the Bay Area, Hawaii and Mississippi. The skills I learned in TV were pivotal when I transitioned to a career in public relations. I am currently an account supervisor at FleishmanHillard, where I handle communications for some of the world’s biggest brands, specializing in executive communications. I also lead our San Francisco office committee of diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I), which works to foster an inclusive environment for all staff, and am a member of True Mosaic, a newly developed DE&I client offering.

Being a Cal student-athlete taught me valuable lessons about overcoming adversity, working as a team and being a leader — all traits I carry with me today. Most importantly, UC Berkeley showed me that we can all make a difference. To my fellow Cal Bears, in your journeys please keep dreaming big because you never know where those dreams might take you. And once you accomplish your dreams, please reach out to someone less fortunate – so they might dream!
student-athlete spotlight Mike Saffell FOOTBALL / CLASS OF ’21 HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA
Why did you choose Cal? Cal is the best possible mix of both academics and athletics. Other schools preach about their competitive nature, but Cal truly lives it. After a hard practice, you are met with more challenges as you face some of the brightest minds in the classroom. The alumni base and support that is offered here is second to none. What is your major? I chose the business school because it is competitive and challenging. Many of my fellow student-athletes come to Berkeley for the opportunity to study at the Haas School of Business because of how world-renowned it is. Similar to the reason I chose Cal in the first place, the path to Haas challenged me personally and professionally, allowing me to grow as an individual.
How is your experience as a Cal student-athlete unique? Especially now, more than ever, you feel a shift in the way Cal Athletics is perceived at the school. With the support of an amazing athletic department, we have made great strides among several programs. It is very fun and exciting to be part of this transformation and the momentum that is being created. What has been your most rewarding experience as a Cal student-athlete? It was my ability to come back from two different surgeries and still perform at a very high level, both academically and athletically. I tore my MCL and MPFL during practice, ending my season seven games into my 2018 campaign. Even with my swollen knee that felt broken and in immense pain, I had to study for a midterm that same night. However, I later received an A on my midterm, which served as validation that I can fight through anything to succeed.

cal supporter insights Mark ’83 and Lori Edelstone ’84 Mark and Lori Edelstone (pictured right), stewards of Men’s Basketball’s Edelstone Family Scholarship, share their insights on how Cal is unique and why they support the school’s 850 student-athletes with their philanthropy on an annual basis. How is Cal unique? Cal is a special place, both in the Bay Area and around the world. People go through this university, like we have, and go on to shape society, improve humanity, grow the economy and significantly impact the world we live in. As it is close to our hearts, there is no other institution like Cal in the country for the memories it creates and experiences it offers.
Why do you support Cal Athletics? Some of the best memories we have come from our experiences with Cal Athletics. We have been fans since we were students and became season-ticket holders for football upon graduating in 1984 and for men’s basketball in 1992. Cal is woven into our family and has significantly impacted our lives. We love the memories and opportunities that sports create for everyone, from students to alumni, faculty, staff and student-athletes. Haas Pavilion on a Saturday is one of our favorite places to spend time. What motivates your philanthropy to Cal? We are committed to supporting the success of the 850 student-athletes at Cal. It is terrific to see all of them excel in the classroom and the sport they play. Through their hard work and dedication to their teams and the university, we are inspired to make an impact on the student-athletes and see them successfully grow throughout their time at Cal and after they graduate. We believe in developing the student-athletes to become stewards of the world after receiving a UC Berkeley education, like we have during our experience as graduates of Cal.

transformational gifts to cal Leaving a Legacy In an extraordinary example of her commitment to Cal’s future, Lynda Brothers ’68 (pictured right) gifted Cal Athletics approximately $10.8 million via her estate to support six women’s sports teams — one of the largest single-donor gifts ever to Cal. Former Cal Director of Women’s Athletics Dr. Luella Lilly bequested $1.275 million to strengthen scholarships for young women and Cal softball, continuing her longtime support of Cal and our female student-athletes. Furthering his deep support of Cal baseball, Stu Gordan ’62 & ’65 gifted $1.1 million from his estate to enhance the baseball program. First Women’s Coaching Endowment With a pair of $1 million gifts from Tom Shaffer ’79 and his mother, Abbey, and Emily ’81 & Jeff Risberg, the Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey was created. This marked Cal’s first women’s head coach endowment, honoring field hockey’s first head coach, Donna Fong. Securing an Academic Future Pat and Kent ’60 & ’64 Newmark made a $1 million gift to Cal Athletics to endow in perpetuity the Newmark Awards — honors given annually to the athletics programs on campus with the highest cumulative GPA and to the team with the most improved GPA. Men’s Rowing Scholarship Established Rodney Friedman ’56, a long-time supporter of men’s rowing, gifted the program $1 million to create an endowed scholarship in honor of his late wife, Shirley Friedman.
