CAL ATHLETICS FUND: EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Dear Cal Athletics Family, Since the first day I stepped on campus, I have been inspired by the unwavering commitment of our dedicated supporters, fans and alumni of the University of California. With the unveiling of our strategic plan in August 2019, we have a well thoughtout road map to provide our student-athletes with exceptional experiences in athletics, academics and development to prepare them for post-graduation success. The 2018-19 academic year was filled with highlights and pivotal moments for our athletics department. In 2019, we announced the creation of the Cameron Institute, an innovative program that will transform student-athlete development. Made possible through a $12.5 million gift from C. Bryan Cameron, the institute will impact current and future generations of Golden Bears by focusing on three pillars — leadership and personal development, career development and community engagement. On the athletic front, our student-athletes continued to excel on the national stage, claiming 11 national titles. For example, our men’s swimming and diving team won its fourth team title in the last nine years, propelled by national crowns in four individual events and one relay. After excelling nationally for the Bears, I am excited for our most recent group of student-athletes who earned professional contracts to play the sports they love, highlighted by two top 10 draft picks in Andrew Vaughn (No. 3 overall in Major League Baseball) and Kristine Anigwe (No. 9 overall in Women’s National Basketball Association). Academically, our student-athletes continued to shine at the No. 1 public university in the world. Fourteen of our 16 women’s programs posted a GPA of at least 3.0 in the spring, for an overall average of 3.157, while seven of our 14 men’s programs hit the 3.0 mark for an average of 3.006. Twenty-one of Cal’s 30 varsity teams (70%) earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Additionally, 16 of our teams posted perfect Academic Progress Rate scores in the most recent 2017-18 report — up from 11 teams the previous year. The university and the athletic department are aligned in our goals to build a championship culture that focuses on developing well-rounded, exceptional experiences for our student-athletes. As we strive to meet these goals, we depend on our dedicated supporters to help us build on our high standards of excellence. To be exceptional, athletically and academically, requires the best coaches, practice facilities, weight rooms, nutrition programs, academic advisors, career counselors, and so much more! Your generosity is critical to everything we do and deepens your connection to Cal Athletics. On behalf of the Cal Athletics Fund, I am excited to present the annual report for fiscal year 2019 (July 1, 2018 — June 30, 2019). We are grateful for your support and appreciate your loyalty to our student-athletes as they strive to maximize their potential in all areas of their lives. Go Bears!

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS Collin Morikawa (left) and Toni-Ann Williams

GRADUATION RATE SUCCESS • Sixteen teams scored perfect Academic Progress Rates for the most recent report for the 2017-18 academic year, including women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s tennis, women’s swimming and diving, women’s soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, volleyball and beach volleyball, women’s cross country and women’s track and field. Seven of these teams, men’s cross country, men’s tennis, women’s golf, lacrosse, women’s soccer, volleyball and beach volleyball, had perfect multi-year scores. Each of these teams earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for their performance in the classroom. • Based upon the most recent Graduation Success Rate (GSR), 82% of Cal’s student-athletes who entered the university on athletic aid between 2007-11 graduated within the measured six-year period. As this metric does not measure the graduation rate for non-scholarship student-athletes, the graduation rate for all student-athletes at Cal is even higher and more closely resembles the undergraduate student body’s graduation rate (84%). • Six teams had 100% graduation rates, including men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s gymnastics, volleyball and women’s swimming and diving. NEWMARK AWARDS The awards were established by generous supporters Kent and Pat Newmark 13 years ago to recognize academic excellence in our 30 sports. Football received the Newmark Award for Most Improved GPA with its 2.849 average. The 2018-19 team winners for highest GPA were: • men’s rowing (3.096, large team) • women’s swimming & diving (3.379, large team) • men’s golf (3.221, small team) • women cross country (3.331, small team)

BEARS GIVE BACK THE TUTOR’S TUTOR GIANNI TARANTO WORKS TO HELP FELLOW STUDENT-ATHLETES IN THE CLASSROOM

Adam Wood (RISE), Madison Roberts and Bobby Thompson

RISE TO THE OCCASION LACROSSE’S MADISON ROBERTS EMERGES AS A STUDENT-ATHLETE LEADER FOR VOTER REGISTRATION Madison Roberts, who finished her career on the Cal lacrosse team in the spring of 2019, was on a mission last school year to make sure all of her teammates were registered to vote. After that goal was reached, she set her sights even higher. Roberts has been working with the nonprofit organization RISE (Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality) and specifically RISE to Vote — a nonpartisan effort of RISE that encourages student-athletes to register to vote — to spread the word about the importance of voting. Her influence has extended well beyond the lacrosse team. After discussing her interests and gaining the support of head coach Brooke Eubanks, Roberts sought more help from representatives in Cal Athletics to get an initiative started. The

initial help from Bobby Thompson, the director of student-athlete development, opened the door for her to meet with Cal Senior Woman Administrator Jennifer Simon-O’Neill, who discussed options with Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton. Simon-O’Neill said Cal had already been speaking with RISE about other endeavors prior to her knowledge of Roberts’ cause, so pairing her with the organization was a perfect fit.

Fluent in English, Italian and Chinese when he arrived at Cal in 2015, Gianni Taranto was the perfect representation of the multi-national Cal men’s water polo team.

15 tutors in the position. His work with other student-athletes allowed him to understand the socio-cultural nature of learning and the interconnectedness of all academic disciplines.

Although being a student-athlete at Cal is challenging, after his freshman year, Taranto felt the need to stay even more occupied. A strong student who was already familiar with the resources offered by the Athletic Study Center on campus, the native of Sydney, Australia, settled on tutoring other student-athletes as a way to expand his horizons.

The Australian also says that the reason he decided to tutor has little to do with personal advantage but rather centers purely on a love for his students. While grades are important, the most rewarding part of his job comes from getting to watch his students “develop skills such as the ability to think critically, analyze texts and construct logical arguments.”

For three years, tutoring in the Athletic Study Center became part of Taranto’s daily routine. That comfort level allowed him to balance what he called the “three S’s” of college life – school, sport and staying social.

So, would a career in academics interest Taranto?

That first component was especially important to the Australian. He carried one of the highest GPAs on the men’s water polo team throughout his time at Cal and in 2018 received the Golden Bear Award from the athletic department for compiling the team’s top mark.

In October 2018, Roberts and RISE put on a presentation for Cal’s student-athletes and hosted a photo booth activation station at Cal’s volleyball and football games where fans took photos or GIFs expressing the importance of voting. There was also a station set up to help those who weren’t already registered to vote to get in the system.

“In an ideal world, I would have a prosperous career in another sphere where I can attain more life experience,” Taranto said. “Then I can return to teaching when I am older and wiser.”

By tutoring other student-athletes, Taranto formed a wide array of new relationships. At the same time, he helped teammates like Vassilis Tzavaras from Greece, who credits Taranto with helping to improve his writing skills.

“I ask that you educate yourself on the issues, use your voice on issues you care about by voting,” she said. “I don’t care what your opinion is, but I want you to develop an opinion on the issues and feel passionately about it. I just want people to actively listen. Everyone can and should vote.”

Taranto’s work in the Athletic Study Center led to a promotion to become a graduate tutor. A role usually given to graduate students in the School of Education, he was one of only

BEARS GIVE BACK TEACHING A LOVE FOR SCIENCE JENNA CAMPBELL LEADS CLASS THAT BRINGS HANDS-ON APPROACH TO OAKLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS In the spring of 2018, Jenna Campbell enrolled in a UC Berkeley deCal class titled “Science in Oakland Elementary Schools,” a program that brings hands-on science to students in some of the area’s most academically challenged environments. She enjoyed the course so much that she started teaching it last school year. “I never really worked with kids beyond coaching a whole lot,” said Campbell, who finished her career on the Cal women’s swimming & diving team in 2019. “I went into the class, and I didn’t know what to expect. I just really enjoyed working with the kids and seeing how excited they were.” Campbell, who majored in molecular & cell biology with an emphasis in neurobiology,

developed her affinity for science during her own elementary school days in Palo Alto. She understands now that she had opportunities that aren’t afforded to many other students. Campbell co-taught the deCal class with two other students with a focus on exposing early learners to STEM areas – science, technology, engineering and math. On Mondays, Campbell and her fellow teachers gathered in a Barrows Hall classroom to talk about the experiments they wanted to bring to the young students and discuss how to address broader inequalities that exist in schools. Every other Wednesday, the Cal students headed off-campus, with half of the class going to Garfield Elementary and the rest visiting Bridges Academy. The afternoon

sessions were part of an afterschool program sponsored by Super Stars Literacy. At Garfield, which is where Campbell led the class, more than a dozen first-graders eagerly awaited the arrival of the visitors from Cal. And when the group arrived at the classroom, the young students perked up with obvious anticipation for the 75-minute learning experience. On one particular Wednesday, Campbell led the class through learning how to create power and movement for a vehicle. Other weeks featured planting a garden or building a volcano.

PEARSON AND HARO REPRESENT CAL ON PAC-12 STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Ultimately, Campbell and her classmates wanted the elementary school students to get exposure to science in general and possibly consider it as a career option.

Current juniors Maleah Pearson (above left) and Angel Haro (above right) from the women’s and men’s gymnastics teams, respectively, represented Cal in 2018-19 on the Pac-12 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The SAAC, part of Pac-12 Impact, is a forum for Pac-12 student-athlete leaders to promote camaraderie and cooperation while fostering a sense of conference unity and pride. The group is composed of two studentathletes (one male, one female) from each member institution who are chosen by their administrators to represent their campuses. In the fall of 2018, Pearson and Haro visited Wood Thumb in San Francisco to help build playhouses for Habitat for Humanity. Every year, the Pac-12 SAAC representatives engage in group outreach activities to further their own learning experiences.

The inaugural Cal Athletics Parents Open House welcomed new parents and guardians of student-athletes to the Cal Athletics family. Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton gave an overview of the department and what to expect now that they have joined the Cal Family.

Some of Cal’s best and brightest gathered to raise awareness and funds to support the Bears’ world-class aquatics program. Attendees reunited with old teammates, relived college glory days and interacted with the studentathletes carrying on their legacies. The event featured the theme, “Beneath the Surface.”

The 10th annual Scholarship Banquet was held to recognize and thank contributors of athletic named scholarships and connect them with the student-athletes receiving those scholarships. The dinner provided our supporters an opportunity to see firsthand the impact their generosity has on our student-athletes. It also gave our student-athletes a chance to thank the individuals that support their scholarship and share information about their Cal experiences. Cal Athletics spends more than $14.3 million for scholarships every year.

The Cal Athletics Fund hosts the annual Thank You Luncheon (formerly known as the Bear Backer Luncheon) to celebrate the philanthropy of those who make our athletic programs possible. Open to Cal Athletics Fund members who have contributed a minimum of $1,200 and above in the prior fiscal year, this annual event honoring the generosity of Cal Athletics supporters features keynote speakers and recognition awards.

Speakers discussed department resources that support exceptional experiences and help make Cal a home away from home for 850 studentathletes. Guests learned about physical and mental health and wellness from Ryan Cobb and Chris McLean, student-athlete development from Bobby Thompson, the Cal Athletics Fund from Lindsey Scott-Anderson, and a coaching perspective from Peter Wright, Cal men’s tennis head coach.

Since the Cal Aquatics Gala’s inception in 2006, the event has continued to grow. With over 400 guests, the 2018 gala raised more than $345,00 for our aquatics programs. Attendees heard from representatives of the various aquatics programs about their Cal journeys: Alex Cacao (women’s diving, ’20), Valerie Hull (women’s swimming ’18), Olympian Anthony Ervin (men’s swimming ’10), Chris Grace (women’s water polo ’01 & ’02), Rob Solomon (men’s water polo ’88), and Teri McKeever (women’s swimming and diving head coach).

Carolyn Palmer, who graduated in 1983 with a degree in nutrition and clinical dietetics, was one of the speakers. Palmer is a proud Cal women’s soccer alumna who, along with her husband Dick, established the Richard and Carolyn Palmer Scholarship Fund in 2010 to provide undergraduate scholarships for Cal men’s and women’s soccer, football and softball.

Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton served as the host and master of ceremonies. A series of awards were presented, including: Cal Spirit Recognition Award (honoree: Dr. Luella Lilly), Cub of the Year (honoree: Spencer Bowen), Golden Bear Award (honorees: Paul and Ann Flemer) and Bear of the Year (honorees: Rick and Janet Cronk).

CLASS OF 2019

One of the most enriching and rewarding aspects of being a student-athlete at Cal is the opportunity to earn a degree from the top public university in the world. Cal Athletics strives to provide a well-rounded environment for its 850 student-athletes to maximize their athletic, academic and personal development as they prepare for post-graduation success. We are honored to recognize the 2019 graduating class of student-athletes.

THE CAMERON INSTITUTE Jim Knowlton, Marissa Nichols and Bryan Cameron

“I AM INCREDIBLY EXCITED THAT CAL COACHES WILL BE ABLE TO GO INTO HOMES OF PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETES AND TELL PARENTS ABOUT THE CAMERON INSTITUTE AND HOW IT WILL HELP THEIR CHILDREN PURSUE THEIR DREAMS.” — JUSTIN WILCOX, FOOTBALL HEAD COACH, ABOVE WITH BRYAN CAMERON

“THE BIGGEST IMPACT I CAN HAVE ON THE YOUNG WOMEN IN MY PROGRAM IS TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE AS PREPARED AS POSSIBLE FOR LIFE AFTER CAL. THE CAMERON INSTITUTE PROVIDES THE RESOURCES TO HELP US ACCOMPLISH THAT GOAL.” — CHARMIN SMITH, WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH

The Cameron Institute, an innovative program to prepare the University of California’s student-athletes for life after graduation by supporting their overall growth and development as undergraduates, was announced in May 2019 with a generous gift of $12.5 million from C. Bryan Cameron. With a small percentage set aside for initial start-up costs, $12 million was placed into an endowment to support the program in perpetuity.

We have an extraordinary opportunity to leverage the important skills and experiences that students already acquire by participating in athletics and translate those strengths into successful careers in any field.

We want to create an enriching environment in which studentathletes can challenge themselves intellectually, can train and develop to maximize their potential in their sport, and grow as people in all aspects of their lives.

Leadership and Personal Development — Provide instruction and training designed for student-athletes to aspire to act as leaders in the workplace and the world

Marissa Nichols, Ph.D., joined the Golden Bear staff in September 2019 as associate athletic director for studentathlete development and as director of the Cameron Institute. Nichols, one of the national leaders in the landscape of intercollegiate student-athlete development, is focused on creating programming, hiring a diverse staff, and building infrastructure. The Cameron Institute is expected to be fully operational by the start of the 2020-21 academic year.

19

The institute will strive to have a transformational impact through three pillars:

Career Development — Through interest assessments, help student-athletes with their choice of career paths and majors, laying the groundwork for success after graduation Community Engagement — Encourage student-athletes to build an understanding of the benefits of public service and demonstrate that success is achieved through long-term commitment, allowing participants to develop skills and practices to become strong university ambassadors for the community

DONOR HIGHLIGHTS AARON RODGERS GIVES BACK TO CAL FOOTBALL

The Aaron Rodgers Team Locker Room recognizes Rodgers’ leadership support of Cal football.

SEVEN-FIGURE GIFT TO RENOVATE LOCKER ROOM AND CREATE SCHOLARSHIP During his two seasons guiding the Cal football team, Aaron Rodgers quarterbacked the Golden Bears to a pair of bowl games and a top-10 national ranking, putting a stamp on the program that has alumni and fans buzzing to this day. Now, Rodgers will have his name attached to Cal football in perpetuity through a sevenfigure gift that will impact current and future Golden Bears now and for years to come. Rogers’ donation was used to renovate the football locker room at California Memorial Stadium and established the Aaron Rodgers Football Scholarship. Locker room construction was performed over the summer to be ready for the season opener against UC Davis. The locker room has been renamed the Aaron Rodgers Team Locker Room. The Aaron Rodgers Football Scholarship will be awarded each year to a junior college transfer. Rodgers himself came to Cal after one season at Butte College in his hometown of Chico. In addition to Rodgers’ donation, Dr. Paul F. White ’68

20

also generously contributed a six-figure gift to the locker room project. He and his wife, Linda, have donated to numerous other projects benefiting Golden Bear student-athletes, including the renovation of Memorial Stadium and the establishment of the Paul F. White Sports Medicine Complex at Haas Pavilion. White is also the brother of former Cal football All-American and College Football Hall of Famer Ed White, and this contribution is just the latest example of his dedication to Cal Athletics and student-athlete wellness. Rodgers starred for the Bears in 2003 and ’04, and his name remains etched in the Cal record book. During his first season, he earned game MVP honors when he guided the Bears to a 52-49 win over Virginia Tech in the Insight Bowl. A year later, he received first-team All-Pac-12 recognition as Cal finished 10-2, advanced to the Holiday Bowl and received a No. 9 final ranking. He remains Cal’s all-time leader in passing efficiency, among many other records he established in Berkeley. In the NFL, Rodgers is a two-time NFL MVP and led the Green Bay Packers to the title in Super Bowl XLV.

DONOR HIGHLIGHTS JIM WAGNER ’93 GIVES TO WATER POLO AND AQUATICS MEN’S & WOMEN’S WATER POLO SHARE SCHOLARSHIP; TEAM ROOM NAMED AT LEGENDS AQUATIC CENTER Jim Wagner ’93, an All-American water polo goalie as a Golden Bear who won three NCAA Championships between 1988-91 and a fourth as a student assistant in ’92, and his wife, Anne, have made two significant gifts to Cal Athletics with an endowment to support a water polo scholarship and the naming of the team room at Legends Aquatic Center. The Anne and Jim Wagner Water Polo Scholarship will alternate annually to assist the education of a male and female studentathlete, while the Wagner Champions Room at the aquatic center, which also serves the swimming & diving teams, will be dedicated to the 1990 NCAA Champion men’s water polo team and its head coach, the late Steve Heaston. As the parents of three daughters, the Wagners are excited to support the university’s inclusive mission. “We want to keep water polo sustainable and viable for both men and women,” said Jim, who received his bachelor of arts in history from Cal in 1993 and serves as the CEO for Roland Foods. “This scholarship will give both male and female student-athletes the opportunity to attend the greatest university in the world and create their own journey.” Wagner, who also competed for the Junior U.S.

U-18 team, got the opportunity to attend Cal after finishing his high school career as the Los Angeles Times 1987 Player of the Year out of Corona Del Mar High School in Orange County following the Sea Kings’ sectional state title. An injury to reigning NCAA Player of the Year Jeff Brush took Wagner from a potential redshirt to the starting goalie position for the Blue and Gold, allowing him to compete for one season under Pete Cutino on the 1988 NCAA title team before the legendary head coach passed the reins to Heaston, his assistant. Heaston’s first year at the helm fell one goal short of the 1989 championship. His second season was a transformational team experience en route to the 1990 national title, making that season — and the memory of coach Heaston, who was named NCAA Coach of the Year — the inspiration for the team room’s dedication. While superlative mentors made a lifelong impact on Wagner, the commitment he and Anne have made to Cal will make a difference for generations to come. The Cal Athletics family is grateful to the Wagners for these gifts, which support the sustainable future of the department and the ongoing excellence of Cal’s aquatics programs.
