BERKELEY - California breezed past Nevada, 4-1. Junior forward Alex Morgan had three goals for the Bears and redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian had one. Cal out shot UNR, 15-2, and 8-2 in shots on goal. “I don’t think that we were particularly hard to defend because we played very one-dimensionally - north to south,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “In the second half, we spread the field and used the width better, and as a result, we were able to create more opportunities on goal.” Morgan got the Bears on the board very early in the first half - just 5:23 into the game. Nevada keeper Marie Cove was drawn out of her post in goal to grab a ball but Morgan out powered her to gain possession and an open look on goal. The teams went into the half with Cal holding a 1-0 lead, but that did not last long. Kevorkian scored the ultimate gamewinner in the 59th minute. With freshman forward Samantha Walker coming in with the assist, Kevorkian shot the ball in off a deflected block. From there, Morgan tacked on two goals - one at 61:15 and her third of the game and season at 71:33. To bring Cal’s advantage to 3-0, Morgan received a pass from senior midfielder Katie Oakes. Junior defender/forward McKenna McKetty fed the ball to Morgan fro her third ball, again coming into the box. Nevada’s Emma Rice scored a goal with just under eight minutes remaining in the game, winning a 1-v-1 battle with freshman keeper Lauren Hein. The Bears earned 10 corner kicks to Nevada’s one. Senior keeper Gina Pellegrini was credited with the win, with 60 minutes spent between the posts against the Wolf Pack. Morgan led the Bears with four shots on goal.
PORTLAND, Ore. - The No. 16 California women’s soccer team lost a hard-fought nonconference game, 4-0, to No. 3 Portland on Friday evening at the Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. The game was played in front of 5,068 fans, which was the third highest attendance in Merlo Field history. “Portland fully deserved to win tonight,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “They were better in all areas, especially in the first half.” The Pilots, who lost just two starters from last year’s squad that advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, controlled the pace of play in the first half. They got on the board just 2:20 into the game with a goal from Danielle Foxhaven. Foxhaven followed that up with a rebound shot in the 20th minute and Portland’s Michelle Olivier added a header to give UP an early 3-0 lead. The Bears finished the final 15 minutes of the half strong but headed into the locker room with a three-goal deficit. The Bears significantly bettered their performance in the second 45 minutes, forcing the Pilot keeper Hailee DeYoung to make two saves. Cal notched three shots in the second half, compared to two in the first period. “We improved our play in the second half and could have sneaked a goal out but squandered some good chances,” McGuire said. “This is not an easy place to play, but we will benefit from this in the long run.” Senior goalie Gina Pellegrini played the full 90 minutes between the posts, making three saves. Junior forward Alex Morgan led the Bears with two shots while senior Katie Oakes, redshirt junior Lisa Kevorkian and freshman Samantha Walker each contributing one.

BERKELEY -The No. 14 California women’s soccer team upended No. 10 Texas A&M, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian notched the game-winning goal at 69:22. Cal out shot A&M, 11-4, to bring the Bears’ season total to, 31-20, thus far in 2009. “We had a certain energy and excitement on the team,” McGuire said. “The team also played together. When we play together, we can be very dangerous.” The Bears had a good look on goal just five minutes into the game when a shot from sophomore midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir, who just returned to Berkeley this week after competing with the Icelandic national team at the European Championship, had a shot that went just high after Kevorkian crossed it to Omarsdottir in the box off a pass from junior forward Alex Morgan. The Bears came out firing in the second half, taking eight shots in the second 45 compared to three in the first half. The Bears turned the tide in the 70th minute, when Kevorkian fired off a beautiful shot from 18 yards out off the feed from Jesolva. The goal was Kevorkian’s second in three games in 2009 and her second gamewinning score. The Bears are now 3-2-0 against the Aggies after losing a heartbreaking game, 1-0, last year at A&M. This is the first upset as well as the first win for the Bears against a ranked opponent since defeating No. 16 Santa Clara in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. “It really sent a message to the rest of the nation about what Cal is all about,” Kevorkian said. “We didn’t play well against Portland last weekend so to beat such a competitor like A&M, especially after last year, the result exemplifies what we’re here to do this season.” 1. 69:22 Cal: Lisa Kevorkian (2) (Megan Jesolva) Goalkeepers................................GA.......Saves A&M: Kristin Arnold (45:00)............. 0............... 0 A&M: Kelly Dyer (45:00)................... 1............... 2 Cal: Gina Pellegrini (90:00).............. 0............... 2 A&M Cal Shots..................................... 4....................... 11 Corners.................................. 4......................... 5 Saves..................................... 2......................... 2 Fouls.................................... 11....................... 16 Offsides................................. 5......................... 0

BERKELEY - The No. 14 California women’s soccer team outlasted No. 25 Texas, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium on the closing day of the 15th Annual Cal Invitational. The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead into the halftime and went on 3-0 scoring run in less than six minutes to extend their advantage to 4-0. “We had two great wins for the program this weekend,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “I think, after the Portland loss, the players were probably questioning if they had what it took so we needed this.” Senior defender Brianna Bak scored the first goal in the 22nd minute immediately following a corner kick. The goal was Bak’s first of the year. “Lauren Battung did a really good job sealing off the near-post player,” Bak said. “I was there and tapped it in.” The teams went into the halftime break with the Bears leading, 1-0. Less than five minutes into the second half, sophomore defender/forward Miranda White extended Cal’s lead with a goal off a suburb cross from redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian. Just minutes later, at 53:02 Alex Morgan scored with a shot to the top-left corner off a pass from sophomore midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir. Just under three minutes following, senior midfielder Katie Oakes fired in a goal with Morgan coming in with the assist. BERKELEY - The No. 9 California women’s soccer team out shot visiting Portland State, 27-1, en route to a 1-0 nonconference victory on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium as part of the Saint Mary’s Fall Soccer Classic. Sophomore midfielder and Icelandic national team starter Katrin Omarsdottir had the Golden Bears’ lone goal. “We were very successful in creating a lot of goal-scoring opportunities,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “However, our execution today was lethargic. We put ourselves in a position where we thought we were going to win.” One of the Bears’ first best looks came at 21:23 when sophomore forward Camellia Senemar crossed the ball into redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian, who took a shot that was saved when Portland State keeper Cris Lewis knocked it off the right post. Just before the close of the first half, Cal had another near goal when junior forward Alex Morgan took a shot on an empty cage but her shot was deflected off a Viking defender’s back. The teams went into the 15-minute break knotted at 0-0. The Bears put one through with 29:35 remaining in regulation. Junior defender/midfielder Megan Jesolva took a shot that was saved by Lewis. Omarsdottir then rebounded the save as it came off Lewis’ extended arms and shot it in for the game-winning goal. Portland State almost tied the game in the final minute when they drew Cal keeper Rosie Aguilera out on a cross but the Viking offense could not finish the play, and the Bears pocketed the 1-0 win. Aguilera made one save in 90 minutes of play for the Bears. Lewis had a total of 13 saves with the Bears taking 14 shots on goal and 27 shots overall. Morgan paced the Bears with seven shots, five of which were on goal. The Bears earned eight corner kicks to Portland State’s zero. It was Portland State head coach Laura Schott’s return to Edwards Stadium as a coach for the first time since her playing days as a Bear. Schott, who is in her second year as head coach of the Vikings, is still the all-time goal-scoring leader with 56 career goals. 1. 28:35 Cal: Katrin Omarsdottir (1) (Megan Jesolva) Goalkeepers................................GA.......Saves PSU: Cris Lewis (90:00)................... 1............. 13 Cal: Rosie Aguilera (90:00).............. 0............... 1 PSU Cal Shots..................................... 1....................... 27 Corners.................................. 0......................... 8 Saves................................... 13......................... 1 Fouls...................................... 7......................... 6 Offsides................................. 0......................... 5

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 19 California women’s soccer team kicked off Pac-10 season with a 2-1 victory over No. 25 Oregon in front of 699 fans. The Golden Bears found the back of net early the earliest they have this season - with a goal by junior forward Alex Morgan just 1:28 minutes into the match. Morgan earned her team-leading ninth goal of the year by beating the keeper from 20 yards out on a free kick. “It was a big relief for our team,” Morgan said. “But at the same time, since we scored early, we had to hold the lead for the rest of the game, which is harder than it is to be tied.” Cal, which is now 7-0-1 when scoring first coming into the match, held the 1-0 advantage for the next 46 minutes of play. The second half began similarly to the first, but with the Ducks scoring the early goal - 2:46 into the second 45 minutes. Teresa Bowns received a pass from Scout Libke and scored with a left-footed boot. It took the Bears all of 21 seconds to regroup and respond with a score of their own. At 48:07, Redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian rebounded the ball off a keeper deflection from a touch by Morgan and powered in the game-winning goal. “My heart didn’t swell as much this time,” Kevorkian noted. “Since Alex had just [gotten tangled up] by the goalie, there was a moment of uncertainty. But once it was confirmed, it felt like every goal does - euphoric.” Morgan tied her career high of nine goals in a season, a feat which she achieved last season. Averaging 0.818 goals per game, Morgan is on track to score roughly 16 by the close of the regular season. Morgan’s goal in the second minute was the first goal scored in any game this season. The previous earliest goal occurred at 2:22 against SMU on Sept. 13 by Katrin Omarsdottir. CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 19 California women’s soccer team won its second Pac-10 Conference game of the year with a 2-0 victory over Oregon State on Sunday afternoon at OSU’s Paul Lorenz Field. The Golden Bears are now 8-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play while the Beavers are now 8-4-1 and 0-2-0 in Pac-10. Sophomore Katrin Omarsdottir scored the gamewinner in the 61st minute with a shot to the lower right from 10 yards out. Camellia Senemar had the assist. “Camy did a great job of finding the cross,” Omarsdottir said. “Lisa went for the header drawing their defender to her - so I was wide open. I got the ball to my feet and finished with one touch. We’ve been practicing finishing with one touch, but in practice, this would have counted as three.” Junior forward Alex Morgan added on her 10th goal of the season with 11:07 to play in the game off a dish from redshirt junior Lisa Kevorkian. Morgan went one-v-one with the keeper to beat her for the score. “When Lisa passed me the ball, I took a touch, passed the keeper and got tripped but stayed up and thankfully hit it towards the middle of the goal,” Morgan said. “It was a great pass on Lisa’s part, I just had to put it away.” Morgan’s goal was her 10th of the year, which is a new career single-season scoring record. The Bears tallied three shots on goal with Miranda White adding one into. Cal was outshot by the Beavers, 10-8. BERKELEY - The No. 17 California women’s soccer team lost a tense Pac-10 Conference game, 1-0, to visiting No. 3 UCLA on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears had multiple solid looks on goal, but could not convert against the Bruins. UCLA’s goal came from Sydney Leroux in the 77th minute off an assist from Lauren Cheney. The 544 fans in attendance were a season high for the Bears. “I think it was a great game today between two really good teams,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “It was always going to come down to opportunities and which team was going to put it away. UCLA took its chance, and we missed ours.” Cal’s first highlight came when redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian stole away on a fast break. She stopped the ball just in front of the end line with a Bruin heavily guarding her, but Kevorkian’s attempt at a cross was denied. Despite being surrounded by five defenders, Morgan’s chances looked bright in 17th minute, when she took a shot off a pass from Kevorkian, but the shot hit the left post. The teams went into the 15-minute halftime scoreless with UCLA narrowly outshooting Cal, 5-4. BERKELEY - The California women’s soccer team grabbed an important 2-0 victory over visiting Arizona on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Freshman midfielder Amanda Groves netted the gamewinner in the third minute for her first goal of her Golden Bear career. Redshirt junior Lisa Kevorkian added an insurance score at 53:03. The Bears outshot the Wildcats, 16-6. The Bears took control of the game with Groves’ score just 2:10 into the match. Kevorkian passed to Groves, who took a touch and shot it to the back of the net. This game was the first start, shot and goal of Groves’ Cal career. “I was so excited,” Groves noted. “I’ve never really played the four position before, but the ball went in. but the first time I was there, I was able to make a difference for the team. It brought the team and our spirits up.” Kevorkian and Morgan teamed up to distance the Bears, 2-0, with just under 37 minutes remaining in regulation. Escaping defenders, Morgan dribbled the ball past a diving Wharf in the box, and passed to Kevorkian, who was on the near side just above the end line. Kevorkian shot the ball in for her sixth goal of the season. “I was originally making a run for a through ball, as well,” Kevorkian said. “But they played Alex, and Alex took this really long touch wide from the goalkeeper. But I got the pass and connected.” The second half was offensively heated for the Bears, who took seven shots, forcing Wharf to make five saves in the final 45 minutes of play. All in all, Cal outshot Arizona, 16-6, and had six corners to the Wildcats’ one. Senior keeper Gina Pellegrini played the full 90 minutes in goal, grabbing three saves en route to her second shutout of the season to improve to 6-6-0. The Groves’ goal at 2:10 was the second fastest goal scored by Cal this year. BERKELEY - The California women’s soccer team netted a 3-2 Pac-10 Conference victory in overtime against Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Redshirt junior Lisa Kevorkian scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute to push the Bears past the Sun Devils. After taking five shots through the first 97 minutes of play, Kevorkian put one through at 97:36 for her team-leading fourth gamewinner of the 2009 season. Katie Suits was credited with the assist. “I’ve never been on the bottom of a dog pile before - it was a great feeling,” Kevorkian said of her team’s celebration following her goal. “When Suits crossed the ball, I knew I had to get a piece of it so I jumped as high as I could and hoped for the best. With golden goals, it’s do or die. I just put all my weight behind it.” In the seventh minute, Courtney Tinnin drew Cal keeper Gina Pellegrini out, dribbled past her and touched it in for a goal. Barely two minutes later, junior forward Alex Morgan powered off on a fast break. Despite being trailed by three defenders, Morgan past them to tie the game for the first time, 1-1, with 37:12 remaining in the half. Sophomore midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir had the assist. STANFORD, Calif. - The California women’s soccer team fell to the No. 1 team in the country, 4-1, against top-ranked Stanford on Sunday afternoon at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Alex Morgan had Cal’s lone goal while the Cardinal’s Kelley O’Hara netted a hat trick to power the Cardinal past the Golden Bears in the regular-season finale for both squads. The annual Big Game between the rival schools was played in a sellout crowd of 2,000 with fans filling the stadium and lining the field. “Our players worked extremely hard,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “Stanford is a very, very talented team, and they took advantage of many great opportunities. We failed to capitalize on our chances early.” After Pellegrini had made three impressive saves, the Stanford offense poked one through at 13:40. The Cardinal took a corner kick, which was headed away by the Cal defense, but Stanford’s Kelley O’Hara rebounded the ball, and shot it to the back right from 10 yards out for her 21st goal of the season. Stanford scored its second goal at 31:17, again thanks to O’Hara. Rachel Quon played a ball to her from the right and O’Hara headed it in to the back post. O’Hara earned herself a hat trick with Stanford’s third goal of the game in the 53rd minute off an assist from Alicia Jenkins. At 58:10, heavily pressured by five defenders and the keeper in front of the box, Morgan was awarded a penalty kick. Morgan took her kick to the right side, but the diving Maker made a black. Morgan collected the rebound and easily knocked it in for Cal’s first score of the game. The goal by Morgan was her 13th goal of the season, bringing her three-year career total to 30 goals, which is fourth all-time in program history. She also remains in fifth place with 74 career points. Stanford responded roughly four minutes later when Lindsey Taylor shot the ball into the upper left 90 from 30 yards out. 1. 13:40 Stan: Kelley O’Hara (21) (unassisted) 2. 32:17 Stan: Kelley O’Hara (22) (Rachel Quon) 3. 52:04 Stan: Kelley O’Hara (23) (Alicia Jenkins) 4. 58:10 Cal: Alex Morgan (13) (unassisted) 5. 62:29 Stan: Lindsay Taylor (5) (Courtney Verloo) Goalkeepers................................GA.......Saves Cal: Gina Pellegrini (90:00).............. 4............... 9 Stan: Kira Maker (90:00).................. 1............... 2 Cal Stan Shots..................................... 6....................... 27 Corners.................................. 1......................... 5 Saves..................................... 9......................... 2 Fouls...................................... 6....................... 11 Offsides................................. 1......................... 1
