Cal Golf’s State-of-the-Art Short-Game Facility

I

n a huge boost for the California men’s and women’s golf programs, the Golden Bears opened their new short-game facility at the Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland in the fall of 2007. The Cal athletic department would like to thank everyone who combined to contribute approximately $600,000 to bring the project to fruition. The lead donors were Ed and Mollie Arnold, Ellen and Joffa Dale, Jay deBenedetti, Lon and Becci Haskew, Judy Isaac, and Pat and Kent Newmark. The programs broke ground on the privately-funded project in 2006 after a long planning process. The twoand-a-half acre state-of-the-art short-game facility is conveniently located on the southwest corner of the Metropolitan Golf Links near the Oakland International Airport, approximately 15 minutes from campus. Built to United States Golf Association specifications, the facility features two extremely large greens – one for putting and chipping, and the other for the aerial game, including pitching and bunker play.

“This was a dream of mine and Cal men’s golf for 27 years and for the women’s program since its inception in 1994-95. The facility will help improve our players from 120 yards and in. Both teams can always be more efficient in that area. It will also help in terms of recruiting because it will make us more competitive with the best programs in the country. For the first time, we will also be able to reach out to the community and host golf camps and clinics.” – Men’s Head Coach Steve Desimone

2010 OUTLOOK

BEARS HAVE PLENTY OF REASONS TO BE OPTIMISTIC

A

fter a strong showing in the fall of 2009, the Cal men’s golf team has plenty of reasons to be optimistic this spring. One of the most compelling is the hunger of a program that captured the 2004 NCAA Championship but has not returned to the event since. “That is the goal and that is where we plan on going,” said an emphatic and enthusiastic head coach Steve Desimone. “I don’t think there’s a player on this team that’s thinking anything other than that. In fact, I know we all feel both a burden and a challenge to get there, but I think we’re up to it. We look forward to this season with a great deal of optimism. We sense that once we get into a good rhythm in the spring, that the sky’s the limit for these guys.” If the team’s performance this fall is any indication, there is the talent and ability on this year’s squad to justify the optimism and accompany the hunger. The Bears opened their fall campaign with a fourth-place finish in a strong field at the Golfweek Conference Challenge hosted by Iowa as junior Eric Mina (Fremont, CA/Bel-

larmine Prep) led the way with a ninth-place individual finish. Cal captured two of its final three fall tournaments with team victories at the Spartan Golf Classic hosted by Michigan State and Cal’s own Alister MacKenzie Invitational. The Bears also featured two individual medalists in the fall with Mina capturing the Spartan Golf Classic and fellow junior Stephen Hale (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial HS) taking the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Hale was also second at the Spartan Golf Classic and broke The Kingsley Club course record with a 63 in the second round. “Eric Mina and Stephen Hale are clearly two of the top players in the country,” said Desimone. “They both proved that with their play in the fall. I feel very good about where they are.” The Bears’ two fall team victories flanked a disappointing 12th-place finish at the Windon Memorial hosted by Northwestern. But Cal still finished the fall ranked No. 30 nationally by Golfweek and No. 33 according to GolfStat. There are 303 Division I men’s golf programs. The Bears success in the fall of 2009 was driven by a mix of veterans and newcomers. Veterans such as Mina and Hale are determined to rebound from a 2008-09 season in which Cal faded in the spring to miss the

NCAA Championship for the fifth straight year. Cal’s ninth-place showing (out of 13 teams) at the NCAA Austin Regional followed a disappointing seventh-place finish (out of 10 teams) at the Pac-10 Championship. Any conversation about this year's squad should begin with the duo of Mina and Hale that Desimone believes can play with anybody in the country. Both posted nearly identical stats (71.0 stroke average for Hale and 71.1 for Mina over a team-high-tying 11 rounds) during the fall of 2009 and were the only Cal golfers to play in each of the team’s four events. Hale finished the fall campaign ranked No. 47 in Golfweek’s individual rankings, while Mina was No. 80. In 2008-09, Mina (73.1) edged Hale (73.8) in stroke average with both playing all 13 events and 40 rounds possible. Hale also excelled in his freshman season when he was named second-team All-Pac-10 and led the club with a 72.5 stroke average. Cal has added seven newcomers to its 12-player roster this year to assist Mina and Hale with junior Chad Vivolo (Carmel, CA/ Pepperdine/Robert Louis Stevenson HS) and freshman Michael Weaver (Fresno, CA/ Clovis West HS) considered the most likely to make an immediate impact. Vivolo, a transfer from Pepperdine, showed his potential with a sixth-place finish

CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS 2009-10 Men's Golf

3

at the Spartan Golf Classic during the fall of 2009. The eight rounds he played in the fall were the team’s third-most behind the 11 toured by Hale and Mina. Vivolo's credentials at Pepperdine include a fourth-place finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate and a 23rd-place showing at the West Coast Conference Championship, both in 2009. As a prep, he was a Northern California All-American. Weaver quickly rose to the top of the Bears’ freshman class when he closed the fall season with an impressive tie for eighth place at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Although he was limited to five rounds of collegiate action in his first fall for the Bears, the Canon Cup player had other impressive amateur showings in 2009 by winning five tournaments and finishing second in two others. He also wrapped up his high school career as the co-medalist at the 2009 State Championship and Southern Regional. “Those four players right off the top put us in a very competitive situation,” explained Desimone. “We’re a young but talented team. I feel very good about where we are.” Indeed, Desimone has plenty of reasons to feel good both now and about where the team is headed as the remainder of the roster consists of five promising freshmen. The five freshman in addition to Weaver include James Coré (Montreal, Canada/ Phillips Exeter Academy), Brandon Hagy Junior (Westlake Village, CA/ Eric Mina Westlake HS), Max Homa (Valencia, CA/ Valencia HS), Curtis Loop (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan HS) and Brian Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton HS). All but Murphy got their feet wet in the fall of 2009 with Coré’s 73.4 stroke average in five rounds (most action seen by a newcomer) the best of the group. Hagy was also the co-medalist for both the Christmas Classic and the California State Fair Championship, and finished second as a high school senior at the 2009 CIF Southern Section Championship. “This is a great recruiting class,” said Desimone. “These freshmen are really proving just how strong they are. You can see as you go though the lineup that we have solid players with great promise.” Three other players also return in senior John Murphy (Wilton, CT/Old Dominion/ Wilton HS), junior Evan Derian (Manhattan

4

Beach, CA/Mira Costa HS) and sophomore Jeff Hamm (Danville, CA/Monte Vista HS). Murphy was the team’s top finisher at the Pac-10 Championship last season with a fifth-place finish and put up the club’s best numbers with an average of 72.7 strokes per round but is redshirting this season and will be back with the Bears in 2010-11. Derian has seen limited action (nine rounds) over the past year-and-a-half after a 2007-08 sophomore campaign in which he tied for sixth at the Pac-10 Championship, earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors and played in 32 rounds with a 72.8 average. Hamm played six rounds as a redshirt freshman in 2008-09 with a 77.8 stroke average, but did not play in the fall of 2009. This year’s group will start its spring season at the Arizona Intercollegiate to be played at Tucson National (Feb. 1-2). The journey that the Bears hope will lead

Junior Stephen Hale back to the NCAA Championship continues with a trip to Hawaii to compete in the John A. Burns Invitational (February 17-19) at the Leilehua Golf Club. The Bears return to California for the USC Collegiate Invitational (Mar. 1-2) at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village and Fresno State’s Lexus Golf Classic (Mar. 8-9) at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno. Then, it’s back to Arizona for a pair of tournaments. Cal will return to Tucson from Mar. 17-18 to play in the National Invitational Tournament hosted by Arizona. After two weeks out of action during spring break, the Bears will play in the Thunderbird Invitational (Apr. 2-3) hosted by Arizona State in Tempe at the ASU Karsten Golf Course. Cal closes out the regular season and

CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS 2009-10 Men's Golf

will make final preparations for the Pac-10 Championship back in the Bay Area at the U.S. Intercollegiate hosted by Stanford (Apr. 11-13) at the Stanford Golf Course. The Bears go back to the state of Arizona for a fourth time this season to play in the Pac-10’s, which will be hosted by Arizona State (Apr. 26-28) once again at the ASU Karsten Golf Course. “We are familiar with most of the courses that we’ll see this season,” said Desimone. “Other than the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, we’ve played most of the courses a number of times and have a wonderful feel for them. We’ve had success on all of them.” Success in the form of a top-five finish at one of six NCAA Regionals slated for May 20-22 at sites around the nation would put the Bears back in the NCAA Championship for the first time since winning the national title in 2004. The 2010 NCAA Championship will be played June 1-6 in Chattanooga, Tenn., and hosted by Tennessee-Chattanooga. “This is a building year, not a rebuilding year,” emphasized Desimone when asked about his team's prospects of returning to the NCAA's. “At some point, we are going to compete for the national championship again, and it’s very important for our freshmen to get into the lineup and understand what college golf is all about. The freshmen need to learn what it is to be a student-athlete at Cal – balancing school, golf and personal life.” That balance has certainly been displayed by the Bears in the classroom of late as the men's golf team continues to be one of Cal’s top academic success stories. In the spring of 2009, team members combined for a 3.43 term GPA that was the best of all Cal Athletics teams and followed that with a 3.27 mark last fall that was second-best. The current players on the men’s golf team average an overall cumulative GPA of 3.27 that is also the highest overall. The program has also fared well academically within the Pac-10 with a total of 15 Pac-10 All-Academic selections since 2000. “We have always thought of ourselves as a program that wants to strive for the ideal of the student-athlete,” said Desimone.

CALIFORNIA COACHING STAFF

STEVE DESIMONE Head Coach 31st Season • Cal, 1970

Head coach Steve Desimone is in his fourth decade and 31st season at the helm of the Cal men’s golf team in 2009-10 and the man largely responsible for the level of success enjoyed by the Golden Bears program. In 2004, his hard work and dedication paid off when he led the Bears to the ultimate prize – the NCAA men’s golf championship. The 2004 season was magical for Desimone as the veteran coach was able to orchestrate one of the greatest stories in the history of NCAA golf. Cal came from eight strokes behind UCLA on the final day of the competition to win the national title by six strokes over the Bruins. It was the culmination of a season in which the Bears had to overcome several injuries, but they were able to play the best golf when it meant the most. As a result of his team’s impressive accomplishment, Desimone was named Golfweek’s Collegiate Coach of the Year, and was honored as 2004 Grand Master of the Year by the Northern California Golf Association. The current 2009-10 campaign started off with an outstanding fall season as the Bears captured both a pair of team and individual titles with victories at the Spartan Golf Classic hosted by Michigan State and their own Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Eric Mina was the individual winner in the former and Stephen Hale captured medalist honors in the latter. In November, the Bears also announced the national letter-of-intent signing of Ben An, the youngest-ever U.S. Amateur champion. The Bears’ program has made tremendous strides since Desimone became the head coach in the spring of 1980, going from a club sport to one of the elite collegiate golf programs in the country with over 30 tournament titles under Desimone’s leadership. In addition to winning the NCAA title in 2004, Cal has competed in 14 NCAA Regionals and five NCAA championships (1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004).

George Gandranata is in his first season as a volunteer undergraduate assistant at Cal in 2009-10 after a four-year playing career for the Golden Bears. Gandranata was a consistent force as a player at Cal, recording at least one Top 10 showing in each of his four seasons from 2005-09. He recorded his highest collegiate finish at the 2008 Pac-10 Championship hosted by Cal when he tied for third. Gandranata was named honorable mention All-Pac-10 the same season, recording four of his seven career Top 10 finishes. Gandranata continued his fine play recently by winning the prestigious 2009 NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship and the San Mateo County Amateur (67-65-65 – 199). Off the course, Gandranata was selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America as an All-America Scholar for his work in Economics and also awarded the Pac-10 Postgraduate Scholarship Award as he pursues graduate school at Cal in Economics.

Q&A WITH COACH DESIMONE Was the 2009 NCAA Austin Regional, where Cal began its final round three shots from the top-five finish it needed to advance but ended eight shots off the cut from advancing to the NCAA Championship, a tough way to end the 2008-09 season? There’s no question that we were disappointed at the end of the Regionals last season. We had a chance on the back nine of the final round to advance. All we had to do was finish it off. It came down to the last three holes, but we did not hit the shots or make the putts while some of the other teams did, which left us to regret that we did not get the job done. The team took that into the summer and there was a question as to how we would respond. We met with them individually to outline their summer tournaments and addressed what they needed to work on. We identified the needs of ball striking, short games and putting from statistics over the past two years. The players took our recommendations to heart and have certainly made progress. Is it fair to say the team, including the incoming new players, responded well last summer, culminating with some great scores at the 85th California State Fair Men's Amateur Championship, where freshman Brandon Hagy was a co-medalist, freshman Michael Weaver finished tied for fifth and junior transfer Chad Vivolo tied for ninth? We had a good game plan going into the summer and the guys had a lot of overall success. Going into this year we realized that this was the best recruiting class we had ever had. Adding this group to returning players, especially Eric Mina and Stephen Hale, we knew we would be very competitive and had high expectations.

What was the progression in the fall of 2009 leading up to the team’s outstanding performance of the final back nine at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational? Heading out of the summer and into the fall, we had a pretty decent start at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Obviously we played well at Michigan State, where we won with Eric Mina first and Stephen Hale second. We were not up to full strength, unfortunately, when we went back to Northwestern. But within a week we had a chance for some redemption back home through some difficult weather conditions at the MacKenzie. The kids really turned it up on the back nine and we were fortunate enough to win our second event in the fall. Does the fact that five freshmen competed for Cal this fall and two talented players signed National Letters of Intent in November point to a significant buildup of momentum on this team? What is really important is to go through year by year and try to put together a plan that gives you a chance to succeed that year and help you build toward the future. Part of that plan was to allow our outstanding freshmen to compete. Whether it’s Michael Weaver, Brandon Hagy, Max Homa or Curtis Loop, all of these guys have played. The other piece of it was to successfully recruit top national and international players who could really move us back up to being a top-10 team. When you look back at being able to recruit the 2009 U.S. Amateur champion Ben An and France’s Joël Stalter, we believe that we will play a higher level of golf next year. We know that there is a lot out there for us and it’s an exciting time, no doubt.

Is the amount of experience gained across the lineup a big positive taken from the fall? That is one of the keys. This is a building year, not a rebuilding year. We are going to compete for the national championship again. It’s very important for a number of these freshmen to get in the lineup to understand what college golf is all about and learn what it is to be a student-athlete at Cal, balancing school, golf and personal life. What about the success off the course that last year’s team enjoyed and the hopes that will continue? We have always thought of ourselves as a program that wants to strive for the ideal of the student-athlete. Last spring we had a team GPA of 3.43, which was the highest of Cal’s 27 sports and then followed that last fall with a 3.27 that was the secondbest. Overall, the guys on our team also have the best cumulative GPA of any of Cal's teams with a 3.27. Our players take academics seriously and we constantly challenge them to excel in the classroom. You do not have a senior participating this season, making juniors Stephen Hale and Eric Mina your elder statesmen. How have they performed? I am very pleased with the way Stephen and Eric have played. They have really established themselves on the national scene. Stephen won the MacKenzie and finished second at Michigan State, and Eric was the medalist at Michigan State and the Pac-10 Golfer of the Month in September. When you have two players like that at the top of your lineup, you know you’re in solid shape. We are very optimistic and with good reason. How does this optimism compare to recent seasons? We look toward this spring with the most optimism we’ve had since winning the NCAA title in 2004. This is a great recruiting class – these freshmen have proven just how strong they are. [Associate Head Coach] Walter [Chun] and I sense that once we get into a good rhythm in the spring, the sky’s the limit for these guys. Qualifying for the NCAA Championship is the goal. That’s where we plan on going and every player on this team feels the challenge to achieve that. I think we’re up to it.

CAL GOLF COMMITTEE

he University of California’s intercollegiate golf tradition dates back to 1912. Over the years, the Cal Golf team has competed in many of collegiate golf’s finest tournaments, including the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships, and in 2004, winning the NCAA Championship. In January of 1980, a group of golf supporters formed The Friends of Cal Golf to raise the necessary funds to support the golf program at Cal. Operating costs have been covered by the annual Cal Golf Tournament, satellite tournaments in Sacramento, Marin, Palm Springs, Santa Rosa, Fresno, Los Angeles and Seattle, from annual donations and from the Cal Golf endowments. The CalStanford rivalry, perhaps the finest rivalry in intercollegiate athletics, has spawned a series of popular and competitive events,

In the early years of the program, the Cal Golf Committee established a goal of $8 million to fund men's golf in perpetuity. Endowment funds, both active and pledged, now stand at approximately $3.5 million. Nine partially-endowed grant-in-aids are continuing to accept funds: the Edward and Mollie Arnold Golf Grant-in-Aid, the Edward M. Burnham Family Memorial Endowment Golf Grant-in-Aid, the Edward and Lynn Little Men’s Golf Scholarship, the Marin County Golf Grant-in-Aid, the William V. Power Golf Endowed Scholarship, the Sacramento Valley Golf Grant-in-Aid Fund, the Robert G. Tuck Memorial Golf Grant-in-Aid, and the John Lloyd Memorial Scholarship. NCAA rules permit up to 4.5 golf scholarships for the men’s programs and the Cal Golf ComSTAFF

mittee has concluded that the completion of the endowment campaign is essential to both the program’s ongoing success and assuring men's golf in perpetuity at Cal. The Pac-10 Conference is the equal of any conference in the nation and in the sport of golf, as it has produced many of the premier professional players on the PGA Tour. The purpose of the Cal Golf program is to provide a competitive atmosphere for young men who desire a place in the worlds of collegiate and professional golf, as well as to make available to them the considerable educational opportunities of the University of California. A TRIBUTE TO FRANK BRUNK Far left, Frank Brunk was inducted into the Cal Hall of Fame in 2009. Left, Brunk was a three-year football letterwinner from 1947-49 for the Bears. Below, Brunk played golf at Orinda Country Club in the late 1940s.

A

three-year letterman for the Golden Bears football team from 1947-49, Frank Brunk ’50 played running back for head coach Pappy Waldorf in the first two of Cal’s three consecutive trips to the Rose bowl from 1949 to 1951 In his final season, Brunk returned a kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown against USC to help secure Cal's spot in the 1950 “Granddaddy of Them All.” But Frank Brunk’s biggest impact on Cal Athletics has come through three decades of work as chairman of the Cal Golf Committee. “Frank is really the patriarch of this program," said head coach Steve Desimone. "It reflects his foresight and wisdom." In 1979, Cal lost its NCAA status. But together with Desimone, Brunk led the challenge to reestablish the program's NCAA affiliation within the athletic department. Desimone wanted to ensure that if Cal was readmitted to its varsity status, that the program would be more than just a golf factory. He and Brunk envisioned “student-athletes of the highest caliber who wanted both the opportunity to play golf at Cal and obtain a quality degree and meaningful education.” They put together a financial plan and operation that would fund the program in perpetuity, with special events, an alumni base and eventually an endowment. The vision came true in 1982 when men’s golf

was reinstated to NCAA status as a self-funded program that required no direct funding from the athletic department. “Steve and I thought it would be a good idea to bring back golf and provide a competitive atmosphere for student golfers with the exceptional educational opportunities available at Cal,” Brunk said. “Thirty years later, our incredible partnership still thrives.” "We have been the closest of friends for the last 30 years," said Desimone. "One of the great fortunes of my life was meeting Frank Brunk. We established a partnership in 1980 that continues stronger than ever in 2010." Through Brunk’s efforts, the men’s golf program continues toward its goal of becoming endowed in perpetuity. In the early 1990s, as the athletic department was expanding its support of women’s sports, Brunk also led the campaign to establish women’s golf on campus, coming to fruition in 1994. In 2004, Brunk’s goal for Cal golf reached its apex as the men’s program won the NCAA title and women’s golf finished fourth and produced the 2004 NCAA individual champion. “Two NCAA golf programs, starting from scratch, to NCAA champions in 2004 and both looking for more,” Brunk said. “I think this story is unique in college athletics and I am proud to have been a part of it. Cal Golf Committee; they are just as committed as I am to Cal golf. Without them, none of this would have happened.” Brunk and the Cal Golf Committee were also instrumental in the fundraising effort to build a state-of-the-art practice facility for both programs that opened at Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland in 2007. A true Son of California, Brunk received the first Hall of Fame Service Award bestowed by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in November of 2009 for exemplary leadership and excellence in enhancing the Cal student-athlete experience. “Frank Brunk’s induction into the Cal Hall of Fame is a great testament as to what he’s meant to hundreds of young people and their families over the last 30 years,” said Desimone. “Without Frank they never would have become part of the great University of California family.” Brunk graduated from Willows High School, served in the Navy during World War II and enrolled at Cal after his return in 1946. He and his wife, Jennifer, married in 1959 and have three children and six grandchildren.

The University of California

SIMPLY THE BEST

T

here is no other way to aptly describe America’s top public university. There is no other way to describe one of the elite academic settings in the world – especially one that also includes one of America’s most successful athletic departments. The University of California blends the best of all worlds. Overlooking the scenic San Francisco Bay and ranked as the nation’s top public university by U.S. News and World Report, the flagship campus of the state of California also features an athletics program that annually finishes among the leaders in the Directors’ Cup standings, which rates the overall success of America’s collegiate athletic departments. Cal attracts what many believe to be the finest applicant pool in the United States and features a diverse student body population. The University of California offers 351 degree programs, and 35 of the school’s 36 graduate programs are ranked among America’s Top 10. Cal’s 35 programs among the Top 10 is No. 1 among all universities in the country, as is its 32 “distinguished” programs, as rated by the National Research Council. The library is ranked third in the country, as judged by the Association of Research Libraries with 10 million volumes in 32 campus libraries. The current faculty features seven Nobel Laureates, 135 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 28 MacArthur Fellows, 74 Fulbright Scholars, four Pulitzer Prize winners and more Guggenheim Fellows (359) than any other university in America.

Berkeley and the Bay Area

BERKELEY

B

erkeley is a part of the San Francisco Bay Area major metropolitan area of approximately 7.2 million people. The region is one of the most beautiful in the world and includes the major cities of San Francisco and Oakland, as well as Berkeley, home of the world-renowned University of California. Just south are San Jose and the Silicon Valley, home to many of the world’s high-tech companies. The Bay Area also lies within easy driving distance of the high Sierra resorts of Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, the Monterey/Carmel peninsula, the world famous Napa wine country and the spectacular Mendocino Coast. Everyone knows San Francisco, a.k.a. “The City,” from the numerous photographs, movies and television shows that capture its magic and beauty. It is a city built on a series of more than 40 hills, offering panoramic views of every kind. The hub of a ninecounty complex and the financial and insurance capital of the world, San Francisco has a resident population of just over 800,000 and is situated on a 46.7 square mile peninsula bounded on

the west by the Pacific Ocean, the north by the Golden Gate strait, and from north to east by the San Francisco Bay. San Francisco has been named the world’s top city twice and the top city in the U.S. in 18 of the last 19 years by Condé Nast Traveler. The San Francisco Bay is spanned by two landmarks, the Golden Gate and San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridges, and graced by four islands: Alcatraz, Angel, Yerba Buena and Treasure. The area is easily navigated by car, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), bus or ferry, making it easily accessible to all.

SAN FRANCISCO

Frank Gore

Located across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco, Oakland is a city of over 400,000, jam-packed with exciting attractions, stimulating arts and an ideal climate. Oakland’s charm exceeds its man-made wonders, as its tumbling hills, vast forests, hiking and riding trails, beautiful lakes and numerous parks provide a natural escape for those who prefer nature over an urban environment. Berkeley, just a 12-mile drive from San Francisco, is situated on 17.7 square miles with a population of just under 103,000 people. A study in contrasts, Berkeley is a small town with a big city character. With its world-renowned university, global population and rich diversity of cultural arts, Berkeley reflects and affects the rest of the country.

Sports fans can see it all in the Bay Area - professional football (San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders), professional basketball (Golden State Warriors), professional baseball (San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics), professional hockey (San Jose Sharks) and outstanding collegiate competition (six Division I schools). Sources: S.F. Convention and Visitors Bureau, Oakland Convention and Visitors Authority, Berkeley Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the California Trade and Commerce Agency.

SIMPLY THE BEST • Money magazine chose San Francisco as “the best place to live” among the 300 biggest U.S. metropolitan areas. • Forbes.com has ranked San Francisco one of America’s “best cities for the outdoors” for each of the past two years while American College of Sports Medicine has consistently placed San Francisco among the nation’s Top 5 in fitness among the most populous cities. • Readers of Travel + Leisure magazine selected San Francisco as their favorite city in 2008 for its “noteworthy neighborhoods.”

STUDENT-ATHLETE HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTER

MEMORIAL STADIUM RENOVATION

The Student-Athlete High Performance Center, now under construction, is expected to be completed prior to the 2011 season. The 142,000 square foot facility will house locker rooms, offices and meeting rooms, as well as areas for strength and conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition and academics for football and 12 other intercollegiate sports. The building is the physical manifestation of Cal’s High Performance Initiative, a unique program that challenges student-athletes to reach their level of optimal performance through strategic and efficient application of resources. Using cutting-edge technology and a multidisciplinary approach, the cornerstone principles of the HPI are communication, integration and information.

Memorial Stadium, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful settings for collegiate football, was originally constructed with funds donated by alumni, faculty, students and fans. At the time, Robert Gordon Sproul, who became UC president in 1930, said that the stadium “stands in simple dignity, beauty and strength.” Now, plans are being finalized to renovate the 86-year-old structure, starting with the west side, to create programmatic, game day and fan amenity improvements while respecting the architecture and character of the historic structure. Donors have demonstrated their backing of the privatelyfunded project through their commitment to the Endowment Seat Program (ESP), a first-of-its-kind effort in major college athletics to secure the financial future for the Athletic Department. ESP will provide a long-term, sustaining endowment that could grow to $1 billion over the next 30 years and will be used to fund annual operating needs for Cal’s studentathletes.
