2010 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS MATCH 1 – AUG. 20
MATCH 2 – AUG. 22
LMU (0-1-0) vs. No. 14 Cal (1-0-0) Edwards Stadium
UCI (1-0-1) vs. No. 14 Cal (1-0-1) Edwards Stadium
No. 14 Cal Opens 2010 Campaign With 2-1 Win Over LMU 1 2 F LMU 0 1 1 Cal 1 1 2 BERKELEY - Whatever jitters the No. 14 California women’s soccer team had at the beginning of its 2010 season opener, they did not last very long. The Golden Bears scored in the seventh minute and then took a 2-0 lead in the second thanks to an own goal by Loyola Marymount to defeat the Lions, 2-1. “I thought we did very well,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “I think that we controlled the game for large parts of it. Obviously there is some nervousness, especially with the younger players, but I thought they all did extremely well.” The Bears established the tone of the match with a goal at 6:04. Sophomore forward/midfielder Lauren Battung passed to junior Miranda White, who chipped it in from the right side of the box for Cal’s first goal of the season. The scoreboard remained stagnant, displaying the 1-0 Cal lead for a full 67 minutes, until 73:08, when the ball finally made its way pasts the posts again. Freshman Mekenna DeBack took her first shot of her Cal career at 72:41, but a LMU defender blocked it and the Bears earned a corner kick. Senior cocaptain Emily Shibata took the corner from the far side and crossed it perfectly into the box. After a scuffle, a LMU player pushed the ball into the net to distance the Bears, 2-0, thanks to the own goal. Not to be shut out, the Lions made things interesting in the 86th minute when Nickey Ha took a shot to the back left corner. Cal freshman keeper Emily Kruger tried to fall on it but it had crossed the line for a LMU score, bringing the count to 2-1, still in the Bears’ favor. The Cal defense held steady in the last four minutes and helped secure the final 2-1 decision for the Bears. In what were mirror halves statistically speaking, the Bears took six shots and three corner kicks in both the first and second of the game. The Lions found themselves outshot by a margin of seven at 12-5, which is characteristic for McGuire’s squad.
No. 14 Cal, Irvine Draw, 2-2 Morgan scores twice 1 2 OT OT2 F UCI 1 1 0 0 2 Cal 2 0 0 0 2 BERKELEY - In a testament to the adage of “there are no easy games,” the No. 14 California women’s soccer team and UC Irvine played to the maximum level for 110 minutes only to end in a 2-2 tie on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears (1-0-1) took a 2-1 lead in the first half before the Anteaters (1-0-1) scored in the 89th minute to force overtime, in which neither team scored. “There is no question that UC Irvine deserves tremendous credit,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “It was very difficult for us to play any hightempo soccer because they took us out of our rhythm with their pressure. We’re disappointed with the score and the result, but we’re certainly not disappointed with our team’s effort.” Irvine’s second game-tying goal game at 88:14 when Courtney Goodson took a direct free kick and bent the ball around the Cal wall to knot the game, 2-2. Both the Bears and Anteaters now stand at 1-0-1 overall after the first weekend of play. Cal got on the board in the 18th minute thanks to Alex Morgan after freshman Grace Leer passed her the ball. Morgan drew the keeper out, beat her to Morgan’s right and then put the ball straight into the back of the net. From there, Irvine’s Lexi Kopf was the next to score and tie the score for the first time, when she shot on an empty goal in the 34th minute. Shortly thereafter, the Bears proved yet another axiom true in that the five minutes following a score, the team that just scored is at its weakest. Just under three minutes after the Anteater goal, the Bears scored. Cal earned a corner, which Emily Shibata took but Irvine cleared. Shibata regained control of the rebound and served it in to the left. Morgan took two touches and sent it into the bottom right corner to put the Bears back in the lead, 2-1.

MATCH 3 – AUG. 27
No. 8/10 Santa Clara (2-0-1) vs. No. 18/25 Cal (1-0-2) Edwards Stadium No. 18/25 Bears Battle No. 8/10 Broncos to 0-0 Overtime Draw 1 2 OT OT2 F SCU 0 0 0 0 0 Cal 0 0 0 0 0 BERKELEY - The No. 18/25 California women’s soccer team and No. 8/10 Santa Clara added more fuel to their already heated Bay Area rivalry with a 0-0 double-overtime draw on Aug. 27 at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears (1-0-2) out shot the Broncos (2-0-1), 18-5, in front of a season-high 407 fans. “Santa Clara came out with a plan to try to thwart our attack and gave us very little space in the back,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “Our players were very patient but they were also very diligent in the way that they tried to attack. I’m very, very proud of them.” The game had the same ending in terms of records to the 1-1 double overtime draw between the Broncos and Bears last season. However, in the 2010 rematch, the Bears’ 13-shot margin reflects a much different match than when the Broncos out shot Cal, 14-11, last season. Senior forward Alex Morgan had a match-high seven shots, taking three on goal. For Santa Clara, Sarah Jackson had the squad best of three. The match saw the referee issue four yellow cards, three of which were on Broncos. Freshman keeper Emily Kruger played all 110 minutes in goal, making her first collegiate. Kruger was credited with three saves, but those numbers are not indicative of how instrumental Kruger was in stopping the Bronco offensive attacks. Friday’s game represented the first ranked opposition for the Bears in 2010. There was a clear momentum shift towards the end of the first half. With 6:28 remaining on the clock, Danielle Brunache fired off a shot that Santa Clara keeper Bianca Henninger was able to punch out, awarding Cal a corner kick. Senior co-captain Emily Shibata took the corner, crossing it into Megan Jesolva, who shot it wide right. The Bears had the final play of the first half when Morgan fired one into the goal with 1:43 left, but Henninger was there to make the save, diving to the right. No. 21/19 Cal Unleashes on Rice for 4-1 Win 1 2 F Rice 1 0 1 Cal 3 1 4 BERKELEY - After two double-overtime draws, No. 21/19 California inundated Rice with a 4-1 final score. Senior forward Alex Morgan had two goals while sophomore forward/midfielder Lauren Battung handled a penalty kick and the Owls had an own goal to account for the Golden Bears’ four goals. The first goal of the game came at 4:16, which is the earliest Cal had gotten on the board in the 2010 season. Megan Jesolva took a corner andcrossed it perfectly into the goal mouth, where there was a scrum and the Owl goalkeeper Meghan Erkel accidentally kicked it in for an own Owl goal. Roughly four minutes later Battung was fouled in the box, earning the Bears a penalty kick. Battung stepped up and absolutely fooled Erkel in goal. Battung shot to her right and the goalkeeper’s left. Erkel did not attempt so much as a dive for it, and the Bears took a 2-0 lead with not even 10 minutes expired on the clock. In the 11th minute, the referee handed out the first of three yellow cards in the game, this one going to Rice’s Hayley Williams. Morgan took the direct free kick for the Bears and sent the ball flying to the back-left corner of the goal from roughly 30 yards to distance Cal, 3-0. After 28 scoreless minutes, Rice poked one through. Korey Taylor took a left-footed shot to the left side of the net with Jordan McCray getting the assist credit. The Bears took a 3-1 lead into the locker room at halftime, outshooting the Owls, 8-1, in the first 45. Cal added another two points in the 85 minute. Freshman Genessee Daughetee, who made her first start as a Golden Bear, crossed the ball into Morgan, near the top of the box. Morgan took her sixth and final shot of the game and was rewarded with a goal, upping Cal’s differential to 4-1.
Cal Showers Hawaii With 8-1 Win 1 2 F Hawaii 1 0 1 Cal 3 5 8 BERKELEY - The No. 21/19 California women’s soccer team gave Hawaii a taste of the Golden State with an 8-1 victory over the Rainbow Wahine. Senior forward Alex Morgan netted a hat trick, bringing her weekend total to five goals. The Golden Bears, who also got goals from Lauren Battung, Katie Benz, Katie Suits, Mekenna DeBack and Kate Bennett, now stand at 3-0-2 overall while Hawaii is 2-4-0. Cal outshot Hawaii, 21-9, bolstered by a 13-shot second half. The match concluded the Cal Invitational, which saw the Bears be the only team to finish 2-0. “We were better in possession then we’ve been in terms of - once we win the ball, can we keep possession and break down the opponent’s team,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “We had to have more killer instinct." The Bears scored in the 24th minute when Morgan beat out three defenders. It was then Battung’s turn at 36:49 with a shot to the back-left corner. Mari Punzal threw the ball in and Chelsea Deptula shot it to the right corner, bringing the score to 2-1. The one-goal deficit would not last long for junior Katie Benz, who received the ball from Katrin Omarsdottir with one minute remaining in the half. Benz tapped in, directing the ball to the back right for her first goal of the year, upping Cal’s lead to 3-1. In the span of just under a minute, from 46:23-47:15, Morgan scored twice. Now leading, 5-1, it was Suits’ turn in the 54th minute, shooting it in from well beyond 20 yards. DeBack, collected the rebound off a block in the 59th minute and put a gorgeous in that went over the goalkeeper’s hands but under the crossbar for the score. Bennett put the final stamp on the game at 77:22 after she dribbled around her defender to get the goal.
Bears Beat the Beach 1 2 F LBSU 0 0 0 Cal 2 4 6 BERKELEY - Though the No. 19/18 California women’s soccer team was not the first ranked opposition of the year for unranked Long Beach State, the Golden Bears proved too much for the 49ers to handle. Sunday morning saw Cal handout a lesson in the power of the Pac-10 with a 6-0 win over Long Beach State at Edwards Stadium. Senior forward Alex Morgan led the Bears (4-0-2) with two goals, her eighth and ninth of the season, to victory over Long Beach State (4-3-1). “I think our intensity was very, very good from the start of the game to the end,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “No matter who was on the field, we played within our system. By doing that, we earned the shutout. The amount of goals scored is exciting for the players.” The Bears rained six goals and 19 shots over the Beach to take the nonconference victory, which was the third consecutive time the Bears scored more than four or more goals. Cal got goals from four different players - Morgan, freshman forward Rachel Mercik, sophomore defender Rachel Clark and freshman forward Mekenna DeBack - as well as a LBSU own goal. For the first two goals of the game - Morgan and Mercik teamed up for two scores in the span of roughly eight minutes. Cal took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break, outshooting the Beach, 9-4, at the conclusion of the first 45. Thirty-one seconds into the second half, the Bears upped their lead to 3-0. Sophomore forward/midfielder Lauren Battung passed to Morgan, who dribbled around the defender and shot the ball into the right corner. After the fourth goal of the game, the Bear offense was silent for approximately 32 minutes, until Rachel Clark scored after Kate Bennett crossed ball to her on a corner. To close the game, Fitzpatrick assisted with 4:56 minutes remaining on the clock, crossing it into DeBack. DeBack, who played 23 minutes, shot it to the right side for her second goal of her Cal career.

MATCH 7 – SEPT. 17, 2010 USF (4-4-0) vs. No. 16 Cal (5-0-3) Edwards Stadium
Cal Rides PK Goal to 1-0 Win Over USF 1 2 F USF 0 0 0 Cal 0 1 1 BERKELEY - Though the Golden Bears outshot the Dons, 12-2, all it took was one successful penalty kick for No. 16/22 California to notch a 1-0 win over San Francisco on Friday afternoon. Senior forward Alex Morgan converted the PK opportunity for her nation-leading 10th goal of the year. “It was a really tough match,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “San Francisco came in well prepared, well structured and well organized. USF head coach Mark Carr did a nice job in taking away some of our strengths. Certainly, we’re really pleased with our team because they worked hard to get the result.” The brunt of the action came in the 50th and 51st minutes. Freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick took a shot on goal that ever so narrowly missed the inside of the left post thanks to a save from goalkeeper Heather Haney. The punch out gave Cal a corner kick, which was taken by Morgan, who will return to the U.S. senior national team in two weeks. Morgan crossed it perfectly into the goal mouth, where a Don hit it with her hand, awarding Cal the penalty kick. Morgan was assigned the kick, and she knocked it to the left side of the goal with Haney diving to the right, completely missing the ball and giving Cal that important 1-0 lead. The game was the first in the past four that the Bears did not score more four or more goals. Cal, however, did continue its streak of outshooting its opponents, today by a double-digit margin for the fifth consecutive match, at 12-2. Cal has now outscored its past three opponents by a grand total of 19-2, including an 8-1 shellacking of Hawaii and last Sunday’s 6-0 shutout over Long Beach State. The Bears are now 11-3-2 overall with the Dons. “I don’t think this is the best performance we’ve had this season,” Morgan said. “But we got a goal and won. Now we just need to move onto Sunday’s game against Pacific.” 1. 50:30 Cal: Alex Morgan (10) (penalty kick) Goalkeepers GA Saves USF: Heather Haney (90:00)........... 1............... 3 Cal: Emily Kruger (90:00)................ 0............... 0 USF Cal Shots..................................... 2....................... 12 Saves.................................... 3......................... 0 Corners.................................. 1......................... 6 Fouls.................................... 10....................... 11 Offsides................................. 1......................... 3 Yellows.................................. 1......................... 0

Cal, Pacific End in 1-1 Double-Overtime Draw 1 2 OT OT2 F UOP 1 0 0 0 1 Cal 0 1 0 0 1 BERKELEY - It took multiple formations and 87 minutes, but No. 16 California scored with 3:06 remaining in regulation to tie Sunday’s game against Pacific. After two overtime periods, the Golden Bears (5-0-3) and Tigers (2-4-2) remained knotted, 1-1, for Cal to remain unbeaten this season. Pacific’s Lauren Olvera got her Tigers on the board in the 39th minute while freshman Emi Lawson scored the game-tying goal at 86:54. Cal maintained control in overtime, taking one shot in each of the periods but could not get one through. “From the minute that ball went in for their goal, I think that we dominated the remainder of the match in terms of possession and attack,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “We had a lot of shots and corner kicks, but we just couldn’t put it away. It was a testament to our character as a team to come back in the later part of the game and tie it up.” One of the key personnel changes that McGuire made was to push Lawson to forward. Lawson, who has quickly become a key member of Cal’s stingy defense that has only allowed seven scores, netted the first goal of her Golden Bear career. In the 39th minute, Laura Hernandez took a corner kick for the Tigers from the right side. Her cross was easily handled by senior Megan Jesolva, who cleared it. Lauren Olvera collected the rebound, dribbled at shot it directly on goal. The ball hooked into the upper 90 for her first score of the season. After only taking five shots in the first half, the Bears stormed out of the locker room at halftime, amassing 12 shots in the second half. In the 86th minute, Kate Bennett took a corner kick, crossing it in perfectly. Multiple Bears tried to get a handle on but could not get a clear shot off until Lawson. She shot it, the ball hit the cross bar and went in to tie the game and eventually force overtime. In all, Cal outshot Pacific, 19-5. The Bears earned 11 corner kicks to the Tigers’ three. The game, which was played under cloudy skies that started to drizzle at halftime, saw a grand total of 38 fouls with Pacific tallying 20 and Cal ending with 18. Five yellow cards were issued - four to Tigers and one to a Bear. 1. 38:18 UOP: Lauren Olvera (1) (corner kick) 2. 86:54 Cal: Emi Lawson (1) (corner kick) Goalkeepers GA Saves UOP: Jill Medigovich (45:00)........... 0............... 4 UOP: Tashia Long (65:00)............... 1............... 8 Cal: Lauren Hein (45:00)................. 1............... 0 Cal: Emily Kruger (65:00)................ 0............... 2 UOP Cal Shots..................................... 5....................... 19 Saves.................................. 12......................... 2 Corners.................................. 3....................... 11 Fouls.................................... 20....................... 18 Offsides................................. 3......................... 1 Yellows.................................. 4......................... 1

Cal Scores First But Loses 3-1 to No. 3 Portland 1 2 F No. 3 UP 0 3 3 No. 16 Cal 1 0 1 BERKELEY - The No. 16 California women’s soccer team earned itself a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a goal from sophomore forward Lauren Battung, but could not hold on against No. 3 Portland. The Pilots (10-0-0) scored three second-half goals to take the nonconference decision at, 3-1, over the Golden Bears (5-1-3). “I think the players have got the belief in themselves that they can play with anyone,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire noted of Cal’s second ranked opposition of the year. “I’m very, very proud of them. We’re never happy with a loss, but we can move forward. The Bears at the end of the game said that one game won’t define our season. We’re going to learn from this and move ahead.” “We made a conscious decision to try and posses the ball,” McGuire said. “We felt the team that possessed the ball the most would have the best opportunity to win. The first half, I thought we did a good job of that. In the second half, I thought we got a little tired, and as a result, it allowed Portland the opportunity to have the ball more. When they have the ball more, they’re going to find gaps in your defense.” In the 19th minute, the Portland defense passed the ball back to goalie. Her clear deflected off Battung, and Icelandic national team player junior Katrin Omarsdottir collected that rebound. Omarsdottir passed to the attacking Battung, who shot it to upper left 90. After being down for 35 minutes and the majority of the first half, the Pilots knotted the score in the 54th minute, when Colohan found enough foot to kick the ball, from a cross, through the crowd in the goal mouth. A minute later, the Pilots were already on the offensive again. Jessica Tsao dished the ball off to Sophie Schmidt, who punched it to the bottom left corner. The final score of the game came at 76:59. Foxhoven passed Kreminski the ball, who shot it on the ground to back left corner. 1. 18:06 Cal: Lauren Battung (3) (K. Cal-SMC East Bay Match Ends in 2-2 Tie 1 2 OT OT2 F Cal 2 0 0 0 2 SMC 0 2 0 0 2 MORAGA, Calif. - The No. 16 California women’s soccer team, led by freshman Emi Lawson, built a 2-0 lead before Saint Mary’s came storming back with two goals of its own to force overtime. After 110 minutes of play at Saint Mary’s Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the Golden Bears (5-1-4) and Gaels (6-3-3) ended in a 2-2 draw. “We played well today for long spells but lost forcus on the details once we were up, 2-0,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “We need to tidy up our defense on set pieces. Much credit goes to Saint Mary’s for battling hard and earning a tie.” Lawson scored in the 17th and 29th minutes to give Cal its 2-0 first-half lead. A penalty kick gave Saint Mary’s its first goal in the 76th and Ashley Soro added another in the 84th, forcing overtime. After a shot drought in the first overtime period, both teams had two shots in the second, but neither scored. The Bears outshot the Gaels, 17-15, forcing SMC keeper Sarah Peters to make six stops. Megan Jesolva paced the Bears with four shots while Betsy Hassett and Kaitlyn Fitpatrick both had three. Lauren Hein played the full match between the posts, making three saves. The game was Cal’s second consecutive against a West Coast Conference team with the Bears going 0-1-1 against its WCC counterparts. Saturday’s game, the sole match of the weekend for the Bears, marks the final nonconference test in what has already been a challenging and successful 2010 campaign. After the Bears opened the season with a nine-game homestand, the short trip to Moraga, Calif., was the first road game for the Bears. Cal still holds the all-time lead at 14-8-4 and snapped the Gaels’ six-game winning streak that they brought into the game.
Bruins Blank Bears, 1-0, in Pac-10 Opener 1 2 F Cal 0 0 0 UCLA 0 1 1 LOS ANGELES - The No. 21/16 California women’s soccer team held No. 14/13 UCLA (73-1) to 82 minutes of scoreless play before the Bruins snuck in a goal to take the 1-0 decision on. Sydney Leroux scored the lone goal at 82:01 on a give and go with Jenna Richmond. The goal was Leroux’s squad-leading seventh of the year. “Tonight was a very well played game between two great teams,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “It took a special goal from a special player to break the deadlock. Our team is in high spirits and looking forward to USC on Sunday.” Katrin Omarsdottir paced the Cal side with four shots. Freshman keeper Emily Kruger made five saves in 90 minutes of play between the posts. UCLA outshot the Bears, 13-9, noting the second time all season the Bears have been outshot. The Bruins hold the all-time series with their big sister Bears at 13-4-0, winning the past six. UCLA took three shots in the first 10 minutes of play. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Kruger saved two and the Cal defense blocked the other. The Bruins held the power from 12:46-18:29, firing off three shots and taking tow corner kicks. Kruger was there to stop two while another went wide. Cal got its first shot of the game at the start of the 22nd minute. Katrin Omarsdottir’s shot was blocked, but Megan Jesolva collected the ball and shot it, forcing goalkeeper Chante’ Sandiford to make the save. Six seconds later, Omarsdottir took another shot that was again blocked. Less than two minutes after the Bruins scored, Lauren Battung fired off a shot that Sandiford had to save. Battung’s shot was the final attack of the game for both sets of ursine.
No. 20/19 USC Outlasts No. 21/16 Cal, 5-4 1 2 OT F Cal 0 4 0 4 USC 2 2 1 5 LOS ANGELES -Seniors Megan Jesolva and Alex Morgan teamed up for three goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation to put Cal up, 4-3, in the Sunday afternoon match at USC, but the Women of Troy scored at 88:38 and 94:09 to take the game, 5-4. In the second conference game of the season for both squads, the Bears handily outshot the Trojans, 21-13, and forced USC keeper Shelby Church to make five saves. The Golden Bears return to Northern California with their record at 5-3-4 overall and 0-2-0 in the Pac-10 Conference while USC improves to 8-3-2 and 1-1-0 in the Pac-10. “Today’s game was exhilarating for the fans, but a heartbreaking loss for us,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “We gave them a two-goal lead in the first three minutes of the game but showed incredible character to come back.” USC established its lead at 1:43 with a goal from Megan Ohai and increased that to 2-0 at 3:23. The Trojans held that advantage for the next 62 minutes, when sophomore Lauren Battung brought Cal within one at 2-1. USC moved back up by two at 75:12, but the Bears responded seconds later with Morgan’s first of three scores. Morgan scored again at 86:20 and then notched a hat trick with a goal at 88:24 to give Cal its first lead of the game at 4-3. Twelve seconds after Morgan’s third goal, USC tied it thanks to Elizabeth Eddy. In the fifth minute of overtime, Ashli Sandoval scored the golden goal off a free kick, ending the game at 5-4 in USC’s favor. “Going up 4-3 with less than two minutes gave us the chance we needed to win, but we allowed USC back in to score,” McGuire said. “We will grow from this and be strong for it. We are proud of the players.”

Bears Score in Last Seconds to Defeat UW, 3-2 1 2 F UW 0 2 2 Cal 0 3 3 BERKELEY - After the Cal women’s soccer team allowed its 2-0 lead to slip to a 2-2 tie at 89:18, sophomore forward Lauren Battung netted her second score of the game with four seconds remaining in regulation to give Cal the 3-2 victory over Washington on Friday afternoon. Battung scored the first (47:30) and last (00:04) goals of the game with freshman forward Rachel Mercik accounting for Cal’s other score to win. “Over the course of 90 minutes, Washington was the better squad today,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “They were sharper and certainly more disciplined. Coach Gallimore had them ready, and we feel fortunate to have scraped by with the victory.” After a scoreless first half, the Bears established a two-goal lead with goals in the 48th and 66th minute. Washington struck in the 69th and then tied the conference match at 89:18. With a foul called on Washington, Cal hastily assembled to take a direct free kick. With a keen awareness of the clock, Battung chipped the goal in for the gamewinner. “I just saw that the clock didn’t stop, and we weren’t sure if it would because Alex was still on the ground, but Megan [Jesolva] noticed it didn’t stop,” Battung noted of the seconds before her goal. “I was just running through my mind about how many times we’ve been in this situation going into overtime. I just wanted to put it away.” The game marked the initial conference win for the Bears this year as well as the first victory against Washington since 2007 after Cal struggled in Husky territory the past two seasons. Battung scored her fifth and sixth goals while Mercik’s score was her second of her budding Cal career. The Bears struggled mightily in the first half, only taking one shot on goal, the lowest of any regulation period yet this season. Cal rebounded in the second half, outshooting UW, 9-5, as opposed to the first-half statistic of 1-6.
Cal Cruises to 2-0 Win Against Cougars 1 2 F WSU 0 0 0 Cal 0 2 2 BERKELEY - It was another scoreless first half of play for the California women’s soccer team, this time against Washington State, on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Yet, it was the end result that truly mattered, and the Golden Bears scored twice in the second half to earn a 2-0 victory over the Cougars. Cal evened its Pac-10 Conference record at 2-2-0 and improved to 7-3-4 overall while WSU fell to 6-9-0 and 1-3-0 in the Pac-10. Icelandic national team member Katrin Omarsdottir struck first in the 51st minute, and U.S. senior national team member Alex Morgan finished the scoring at 66:19. Sophomore forward Sam Walker assisted on Omarsdottir’s goal while senior defender/midfielder Megan Jesolva crossed the ball into Morgan. For the second consecutive game, the Bears turned in an ameliorated performance in the second half as compared to the first. Cal outshot the Cougars, 6-3, in the final 45 minutes as opposed to the 5-4 WSU shot advantage in the first half. “I thought in the first half, we were playing a little frantically - we weren’t keeping the ball as well as we had hoped for,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire noted. “In the second half, we did a much, much better job of controlling the ball and making WSU chase. When that happened, they wore down, which allowed us some chances on goal.” With the win against Washington State, not only did Cal stop a two-season losing skid to the Cougars but also to the Washington schools since the Bears defeated Washington, 3-2, on Friday. Cal is now 12-6-3 in the all-time program record with the Cougars. Omarsdottir’s goal was her first of the season while Morgan’s was her 14th. Already in third place in career points, Morgan now has 106. Her score moves her from fourth place to a tie with Tucka Healy for third place on the career goals list with 45. Jesolva needs one more assists to move into a three-way tie for fourth on the Cal career list at 18. Currently, she has 17. Prior to kickoff, the Bears and fans honored Morgan for it the match was her final home game in a Cal uniform. Morgan is one of 20 players named to the U.S. senior national team roster for the 2010 Women’s World Cup Qualifying tournament.
Arizona Golden Goal Fells Bears, 1-0 1 2 OT F Cal 0 0 0 0 UA 0 0 1 1 TUCSON, Ariz. - With 40 seconds remaining in what would be the first overtime period, the Arizona women’s soccer team scored the first and final goal of the Pac-10 Conference game on Friday night at Mulcahy Stadium. It was that 25th shot of the match that gave the Wildcats the 1-0 victory over the Golden Bears. “Credit goes to Arizona tonight as they took full advantage of our less-than-inspired performance,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. After 90 complete minutes, the squads traded shots in the overtime period. Arizona had two, both of which went wide left. Katie Suits and Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick both had shots that UA keeper Ashley Jett saved, and one from Genessee Daughetee went wide left. At 99:20, Shannon Heinzler took a direct shot on goal from outside the box for her first goal of the season and the first goal of the game. With the 1-0 decision, Arizona improves to 4-1-2 at home this season and earned its first conference win of 2010. Cal still holds the all-time series lead by a considerable margin at 13-1-2 although this is the first-ever loss to the Wildcats. Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick led the Bears with three shots with Emi Lawson, Katie Suits and Megan Jesolva all taking tow. Of the Wildcats, Ana Montoya took five. Jett made eight saves while Cal goalkeeper Lauren Hein stopped six in 99:20 minutes of play. The Wildcats narrowly outshot the Bears at 1312. Arizona also held the corner kick advantage, 6-3. A total of 27 fouls were called altogether.

Cal’s Desert Weekend Ends in 1-1 Tie With ASU 1 2 OT OT2 F Cal 0 1 0 0 1 ASU 0 1 0 0 1 TEMPE, Ariz. - Although Sunday’s game at Sun Devil Stadium between California and Arizona State lasted 110 minutes, it was a stretch of just under seven minutes that made the difference. The Golden Bears scored first and the Sun Devils scored the equalizer, but neither scored in the remaining 55 minutes for the game to end in a 1-1 tie. The first play of the second half was none other than a Cal goal, 3:13 into the second stanza. Emi Lawson passed to Katrin Omarsdottir, who shot it to the far post from 15 yards out. The score was the Icelandic national team member’s second of the season. A foul gave ASU a free kick at the start of the 55th minute, setting up a prime goal-scoring opportunity for the Sun Devils. Devin Marshal took the free kick and Kari Shane headed the ball in towards the far post for her second goal of the season and the second score of the game. While the Bay Area experienced wet conditions on Sunday, the Bears played in Tempe under a partially cloudy sky with temperatures reaching the high 70s. Cal spread its 11 shots well across the board with Lawson, Megan Jesolva and Betsy Hassett all taking two. The Bears got one shot from five others - Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick, Katrin Omarsdottir, Mekenna DeBack, Genessee Daughetee and Lauren Battung. Overall, Cal was outshot, 14-11, but overpowered ASU, 6-5 and 3-2, in shots in the second half and first overtime period, respectively. Neither Pac-10 squad got off a shot in the final 10 minutes. Emily Kruger made an incredibly eight saves in 110 minutes of work between the posts while Alyssa Gillmore stopped five for the Sun Devils. A grand total of 27 fouls - Cal with 15 and ASU with 12 - were issued in addition to four yellow cards (ASU with three).
No. 1 Stanford Overpowers Cal, 3-0 1 2 F Stan 2 1 3 Cal 0 0 0 BERKELEY - The No. 1-ranked and only undefeated women’s soccer team in the nation in Stanford upped its unbeaten streak to 18 games with a 3-0 win over California on Saturday afternoon. The best point scorer in the nation - forward Christen Press - tallied two of the three scores to push her Cardinal to the Pac-10 Conference victory at Edwards Stadium. A season-high 664 fans came out to watch the Bay Area Derby under gray skies that only opened during warm-ups. “Stanford is arguably one of the best college teams that I have ever seen,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “Not much worked for us today. We really struggled with possession. We knew going into the game, if Stanford had possession then we would end up chasing. Unfortunately we couldn’t break Stanford’s ability to keep the ball, and as a result, they had the ball for the majority of the play. Our young players learned a great deal today and we’ll move on from there.” Stanford’s 23 shots were a season high for a Cal opponent with Press accounting for 10. Press has tallied a goal or assist in all but the season’s opening match. Her points streak moves to 17 games, though her goal-scoring streak ended at nine when she did not score against Arizona State last weekend. The Bears took five shots with freshman Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick firing off a squad-leading two near misses. “We knew they were great shooters from outside the box, from anywhere from 35 yards and in, and that’s a threat that few teams possess,” McGuire said. Freshman keeper Emily Kruger performed admirably, making nine saves in 90 minutes of work. Emily Oliver got the win in goal for Stanford with two saves and no goals allowed before Aly Gleason relieved her with 3:46 to play in the match.
Cal Captures 2-0 Conference Conquest 1 2 F UO 0 0 0 Cal 1 1 2 BERKELEY -It took the California women’s soccer team 23 minutes and 24 seconds to establish a permanent lead over Oregon en route to a 2-0 win over the Ducks. Freshman forward Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick scored her first career goal in the 24th minute and sophomore forward Lauren Battung tacked on an insurance score in the 83rd. McGuire and the Bears were visibly relieved with the win, which snapped a three-game winning streak for the Ducks. The victory was the first in three games for the Bears, who have struggled offensively of late, scoring just one goal in the last two weeks. “It feels really good,” McGuire said of Cal’s first win since Oct. 17. “I think our girls worked extremely hard in practice all week at being more disciplined in front of the goal. They certainly worked hard at creating more opportunities. Today, I felt like we created a number of very good opportunities and the Bears scored some very good goals.” With fresh legs, Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick scored less than 60 seconds after coming into the match in the 23rd minute on an Oregon goal kick. Samantha Walker streaked down the sideline to take it the last length of the field on the nearside and crossed the ball into Fitzpatrick. With one touch, Fitzpatrick shot the ball into the back left corner for her first goal as a Golden Bear. After 23:24 minutes of scoreless play, Fitzpatrick’s goal established what would be a permanent lead. The score was her first as a Bear. “I was really antsy the whole season to score,” Fitzpatrick said. “I feel like I’m more comfortable now that I broke that spell. I felt like it was an instant replay in my mind when I saw it go in the goal. I thought, `My shot just went in the goal. I just scored my first goal!’ It felt great. I feel like I’m more comfortable on the ball now.” In the 83rd minute, Battung broke off from the pack with two Ducks chasing to go one on one with the keeper. Parlee fell on Battung’s first shot, and they both fell entangled in a heap while the ball drifted towards the near side. Battung made chase, getting there well before Parlee, chipped it around the left post from the near side for the score.

MATCH 19 – NOV. 7
No. 13 OSU (15-3-1/7-2-0) vs. Cal (9-5-5/4-4-1) Edwards Stadium Bears Battle Beavers to 1-0 Victory 1 2 OT OT2 F OSU 0 0 0 0 0 Cal 0 0 0 0 1 BERKELEY - On senior day, it was a freshman who came through to give her upperclassmen a win on their last home game. With 105:36 expired on the clock, forward Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick netted the golden goal to power the California women’s soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory over No. 13 Oregon State on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The match, which was played under rainy skies, closed the conference and regular season campaigns for both squads with the Golden Bears ending up 9-5-5 overall and 4-4-1 in the competitive Pac-10 Conference while the Beavers now stand at 15-2-0 and 7-2-0 in the Pac-10. After 105 minutes of play, Megan Jesolva took a shot on goal from the far side that OSU goalkeeper Colleen Boyd saved. Fitzpatrick was there to collect the rebound and handily fire to the right side for the golden goal. Fitzpatrick’s score was the second of the weekend and budding Cal career after notching the gamewinner in the 2-0 decision over Oregon on Friday. “The game was very suspenseful,” Fitzpatrick said. “We were pushing so hard at the goal, and we felt one coming. For me, it was more than just an overtime goal. It means more to me because of our seniors. Seeing their faces after I scored, knowing that we won, and the seniors running at me made me really happy.” An overtime game was absolutely nothing new to the Bears, who have gone into overtime eight times, while this is just the second overtime match for the Beavers. “Our players were extremely disciplined,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said of the Bears’ overall performance. “One of the things we said to them is that we’ve had so much experience in overtime so we know how to handle it. I think our players really have matured. We have a young team, but they’ve matured over the course of the season. I’m very, very proud of them.” Oregon State outshot the Bears in the first half, 9-4, but that was the only time Cal would fall behind in shots. The Bears went on to outshot the Beavers, 6-3, in the second half and a collective 5-1 in the 15 minutes of overtime. McGuire aptly agreed with the difference in play that the box score reflected. 1. 105:36 Cal: Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick (2) (Megan Jesolva) Goalkeepers GA Saves OSU: Colleen Boyd (105:36)........... 1............. 11 Cal: Emily Kruger (105:36).............. 0............... 9 OSU Cal Shots................................... 13....................... 15 Saves.................................. 11......................... 9 Corners.................................. 6......................... 8 Fouls.................................... 11....................... 10 Offsides................................. 3......................... 0 Yellows.................................. 2......................... 0

California (9-6-5) vs. Duke (11-7-3) James G. Pressly Stadium Duke Bests Cal, 2-1, in NCAA Tournament 1 2 F Cal 1 0 1 Duke 0 2 2 GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The California women’s soccer team struck first against Duke, but could not hang on and lost, 2-1, to the Blue Devils in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Florida’s James G. Pressly Stadium. Sophomore Betsy Hassett scored the first goal of her career in the 45th minute. Duke scored twice in the 72nd minute to tie the match and then pull ahead for good. The Blue Devils (117-3) move on to face host Florida in the second round on Sunday while the Golden Bears’ season concludes at 9-6-5. Betsy Hassett scored with eight seconds to go in the first half. Alex Morgan passed the ball to her from the middle with the keeper Tara Campbell creeping out. Hassett tapped it in to the back right lower 90 from eight yards out. It then took a span of 32 seconds for the Blue Devils to completely unravel the Bears’ gameplan. A Cal foul gave the Blue Devils a free kick, which Ashley Rape. Rape kicked the ball towards Kaitlyn Kerr, who headed it in for her fourth goal of the season with 18:40 on the clock. Less than a minute later, the Blue Devils followed it right up with another score. Laura Weinberg had the ball on the near side and crossed it into Gilda Doria. Doria, from five yards out, shot it to the back right corner to give Duke its first lead with 18:08 remaining in regulation. The Bears fired off two shots in the final minutes, but neither found the back of the net. Cal had four players with two shots each - Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick, Betsy Hassett, Alex Morgan and Danielle Brunache. The Bears outshot the Blue Devils, 10-8, and took all of the match’s four corner kicks. At the half, the Bears were outshooting the Blue Devils, 7-1. Emily Kruger played all 90 minutes and made two saves while Duke keeper Tara Campbell made three. The game brings the Cal playing careers of seniors Megan Jesolva, McKenna McKetty, Alex Morgan and Emily Shibata to a close. 1. 44:52 Cal: Betsy Hassett (1) (Alex Morgan) 2. 71:20 Duke: Kaitlyn Kerr (4) (Ashley Rape) 3. 71:52 Duke: Laura Weinberg (10) (Gilda Doria) Goalkeepers GA Saves Cal: Emily Kruger (90:00)................ 2............... 2 Duke: Tara Campbell (90:00)........... 1............... 3 Cal Duke Shots................................... 10......................... 8 Saves.................................... 2......................... 3 Corners.................................. 4......................... 0 Fouls.................................... 11....................... 12 Offsides................................. 3......................... 1 Yellows.................................. 0......................... 0
