With four returning starters back from a unit that rated among the best in the country last season, Cal’s defensive backfield may very well be even stronger when the Bears take the field in the fall. Seniors Syd’Quan Thompson and Marcus Ezeff lead a group that picked off 24 passes and allowed just 12 touchdowns through the air in 2008.

A Brighter Outlook

After compiling a 9-4 record that included a 24-17 victory over Miami in the Emerald Bowl last year, Cal football is being recognized among the Top 20 programs in the country heading into the 2009 campaign. Record-setting tailback Jahvid Best leads the offense, and with eight starters back on defense and veterans holding down the special teams spots, something special could be brewing in Berkeley.

LETTER from Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour Dear Friend of Cal Athletics:

t is difficult to believe that the 2008-09 academic year is quickly winding to a close. It was just “yesterday” that we got the year started with a big football win over Michigan State and the (long awaited) clearing

of the site for the commencement of construction for the Student-Athlete High Performance Center, while all our sports began their annual assault on a top 10 finish in the NACDA Directors’ Cup. Nonetheless, we find ourselves in early May with our fall and winter sports having put highly successful seasons in the book, a team NCAA national championship and nine individual NCAA championships having been earned, a first-ever Draddy Trophy nominee and ultimate winner from Berkeley, our first-ever (we’ve got lots of “firsts” going on!) WNBA draftee and our rugby program positioned (per the usual) to earn its 25th national title (by the time you get this you’ll already know the outcome). We’ve got a lot of activity to jam into these next six weeks, and I have no doubt that our 13 programs that compete for national championships in the spring will give us much to cheer for and be proud of. If I were a betting person (which of course, I’m not!), I’d wager that one or more of these programs is going to provide us with a team championship and perhaps multiple individual, boat or relay titles. As we traditionally have, we will celebrate another successful spring and rejoice in one of the finest athletic years in school history. However, I’d like to draw particular attention to a historic moment that took place on the evening of March 21 in College Station, Texas – site of the 2009 Women’s NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. No, I’m not talking about my impromptu dive into the pool. I’m referring to Cal earning its first-ever NCAA title in the sport of women’s swimming & diving. This was a special group of young women, who are led by two phenomenal teachers, coaches and mentors, Teri McKeever and Kristen Cunnane. We have had great success and great tradition in this program, and the 2009 team benefitted from the lessons, encouragement and support of all of the great Cal women’s swimmers who have come before them. Of particular national significance is the fact that Teri McKeever is the first female to coach an NCAA women’s swimming national championship team. I know we all hope that Teri is the first of many and that there are more to come for Teri and Cal! As we begin to put a “ribbon” on 2008-09, I want to thank each of you for your support of our excellence. This has been a difficult year for our University, our country and all of us as families and individuals. I am buoyed by the countless examples of those who have continued to support Cal through these unsettling economic times. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and hope that our list of “first-evers” lets you stand a little taller, fly your Cal flag with a little more pride (is that possible?) and wear your Blue and Gold with a little more swagger! hat comment, uttered by head women’s swimming coach Teri McKeever shortly after her team captured the 2009 NCAA championship the night of March 21, clearly and succinctly summed up the feelings of all those associated with the Cal program. Teri McKeever In a meet that came down to the very last event, the Golden Bears emerged with an 11-point margin of victory over Georgia in the final team tally. Victories by senior Dana Vollmer in both the 100and 200-yard freestyle, by sophomore Amanda Sims in the 100-yard butterfly and by the 800 free relay squad composed of Sara Isakovic, Hannah Wilson, Liv Jensen and Vollmer set the stage for the last race of the championship – the 400 free relay. Cal entered the pool seeded sixth in lane seven. But the foursome of Wilson, Jensen, Erica Dagg and Vollmer were not to be denied, as they touched the wall in 3:09.88, smashing the U.S. Open record by more than a second and finishing nearly a second and a half ahead of runner-up Stanford. The result assured the Bears of their first NCAA team title in women’s swimming. Vollmer was named NCAA Swimmer of the Year, Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year and the Honda Sports Award recipient for swimming, while McKeever earned NCAA and Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors. Jensen helped Cal complete a sweep of the conference honors when she was voted Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.

al senior Evan Roth capped off his final meet for the Golden Bears by capturing the still rings national championship at the NCAA men’s gymnastics meet April 18 in Minneapolis. Roth’s score of 15,600 gave him the 29th individual title in Cal history and 12th in the past nine years. As a team, the Bears finished fourth overall – their highest placing since 2002.

Men’s Swimmers Claim 3 Individual Titles

ophomore Nathan Adrian, a 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the 400 freestyle relay, triumphed in a pair of races at the NCAA men’s swimming championships, winning both the 50- and 100-yard free events in late March. Sophomore Damir Dugonjic also captured a national title with his victory in the 100 breaststroke, while the Bears placed fourth as a team at the NCAA meet. Adrian, who was later voted the Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year, established American records in his events with a 41.80 finish in the 100 and an 18.71 clocking in the 50. Dugonjic’s time of 50.86 set an NCAA record. The Bears have won at least one national title at the NCAA meet every year since 1996. Damir Dugonjic

SECONDARY to None Cal’s Defensive Backs Strive to Be the Best n the Country By Herb Benenson

he numbers almost speak for themselves – most interceptions in 60 years, fewest passing yards allowed per game since 1995, fewest touchdown passes surrendered since 1994, No. 1 turnover margin in the Pac-10. The 2008 California defense will be remembered by Golden Bear fans as one of the finest units in recent memory. Yet to listen to Syd’Quan Thompson and Marcus Ezeff talk, there is plenty room for improvement even in a secondary that returns all four starters. “I believe we can be better than last year,” said Ezeff, who had three interceptions last season, returning one for a touchdown vs. UCLA. “As a defense, we’ve got to create turnovers and get the offense back on the field. We pride ourselves on being the best defense, hustling around the ball and relying on our technique.” Ezeff, a senior safety from Santa Rosa, and Thompson, a senior cornerback from Sacramento, are two of the primary reasons Cal has established such a stout defense. And despite graduating three linebackers who accumulated more than 700 career tackles, they fully expect the Bear D to become an even more intimidating force this fall. “I think we have the chance to be one of the best secondary groups to have come through here,” said Thompson, owner of six career pickoffs, including a team-high four in ’08. Over the years, Cal had had its share of high-level defensive backs who have earned individual recognition. Nnamdi Asomugha, a first-round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, has developed into an All-Pro cornerback, while Deltha O’Neal, also a first-round draft choice, won the Pop Warner Trophy as the most outstanding senior on the West Coast in 1999. Just three seasons ago, Daymeion Hughes received the Lott IMPACT Trophy, an award presented for on-field performance and off-field character. But perhaps no collection of defensive backs in Cal history 6

matches the ability, maturity and leadership on the 2009 roster. “We are experienced and talented in the secondary, and probably bring one of the strongest defensive backfields in the Pac-10 to the table,” head coach Jeff Tedford said. No player in the conference has logged more starts than Thompson, who will enter this fall with a streak of 39 in a row – every game of his college career. A former prep All-American at Grant High School, Thompson entered the opening Golden Bear lineup a little sooner than expected during his redshirt-freshman campaign. After Tim Mixon suffered a career-ending knee injury during preseason workouts in August 2006, Thompson suddenly found himself as a starter when the Bears opened the campaign at Tennessee. Not only did he have to play his first game with 106,000 orange-clad fans rooting against him, but he did so with a cast on his wrist that prevented him from performing at full strength. Thompson, like many of his teammates, struggled against the Volunteers, and the Bears limped home with a 35-18 loss. By the end of the year, Cal had recovered to complete a 10-3 season that ended with a 45-10 romp over Texas A&M in the Holiday Bowl. But the sting of the Tennessee performance still influences Thompson all these years later. “I don’t want to say I’m happy it happened, but in a way I am,” Thompson said of his debut. “It’s showed how I’ve progressed

and gotten better over the years. That’s a bad feeling to have, and being able to have it from my first college game and not wanting to have that same feeling has just motivated me to become better.” Thompson now enters his senior season as one of the most respected DBs in the country. A first-team All-Pac-10 selection last fall, he is on the verge of breaking the school record for most passes defended in a career. After tying the Cal season mark with 18 in 2008 (with teammate and fellow cornerback Darian Hagan), Thompson has 32 through three seasons, needing just four more to pass the total of 35 set by Chidi Iwuoma from 1997-2000. Perhaps the defining play of Ezeff’s tenure with the Bears to date occurred in 2007 in

Eugene, Ore. With the Bears clinging to a 31-24 lead in the final seconds, Oregon drove deep into Cal territory in its attempt to tie the score. With under a minute left, Duck quarterback Dennis Dixon hit receiver Cameron Colvin inside the 5-yard line. But as Colvin stretched toward the goal line, Ezeff delivered a hit strong enough to jar the ball loose. When the football rolled out of the end zone for a touchback, Cal was able to run out the clock to preserve a win over the 11th-ranked Ducks. Ezeff, however, chalks it up as just another play, one to be remembered, but nothing he wants to rest his laurels on. “It’s a great feeling to be here at the collegiate level and make a play like that,” Ezeff recalled. “I tell people that was two years ago. I’m still trying to improve and stamp my name here. I look at it as something to feed off of and get better. I just need to keep getting better and better.” Improvement is a theme that seems to pervade everyone associated with the secondary. No matter their success last year, the challenge remains for everyone to develop further. “It’s still an environment that is a competitive one, so nobody can be complacent about being a starter,” defensive backs coach Al Simmons said. “As much as you can recruit talent and create competition, backs can’t think that ‘I’ve arrived.’ And they shouldn’t think like that anyways if they want to get better. It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out. “I’m really looking forward to this team working very hard to accomplish our goal. Our goal never really changes, and that’s to reach our full potential. I know there’s going to be high expectations on this team, and it’s something we welcome. I have a lot of confidence that we are going to work hard and get headed in the right direction.” Below is a position-by-position look at the Golden Bears heading into the summer months. A recruiting class of 18 newcomers will join the returnees when training camp opens in early August.

s the Jeff Tedford era at California enters its eighth year, the Golden Bear head coach is quickly moving into hallowed territory within school annals. Tedford, who has already taken Cal to more postseason bowl games (6) than anyone else in team history, needs just nine more wins to pass Pappy Waldorf on the all-time victory list. Tedford’s overall mark stands at 59-30 after leading the Bears to a 9-4 record, a 24-17 triumph over Miami in the Emerald Bowl and a No. 25 final ranking in the coaches’ poll last season. By comparison, Waldorf, a member of the College Football Hall of Famer, guided Cal to a 67-32-4 record in his 10 years at the helm from 1947-56. The Bears have also posted a winning record during each of Tedford’s seven seasons at the helm – the longest run of sustained success for the school since Andy Smith guided Cal to eight consecutive winning campaigns from 1918-25. “I’m excited about the 2009 season and the possibilities,” Tedford said. “The team chemistry and leadership are some of the best during my time here. Offensively, the addition of a couple of new coaches will bring some freshness to what we’re doing on that side of the ball. Defensively, having a year of experience running the 3-4 will make us more comfortable.” With 17 starters returning from the Bears’ 2008 squad, Cal is in very good position to launch Tedford up the school victory chart in ’09. Junior tailback Jahvid Best, the leading returning rusher in the nation after amassing nearly 1,600 yards on the ground last fall, powers the Bear offense, while senior cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson, a first-team All-Pac-10 pick who has started all 39 games of his college career, heads a host of veteran players on the defensive side of the ball. As a result, Cal has been mentioned in virtually every preseason Top 25 list, including No. 18 by ESPN.com, No. 18 by CBSSports. com and No. 12 by Rivals.com. “I was really pleased with the way spring football went,” Tedford added. “We’re not necessarily a veteran team, but we do have a lot of young guys that have played. We also have a lot of underclassmen that have stepped up through spring ball, and I would anticipate even more growth during summer and fall camp so that they will be able to make strong contributions to the team next season.

OFFENSE C

al returns seven starters on offense, headlined by Best, who also ranked second nationally in all-purpose yards (187.2 ypg rushing, receiving and returning) last year. The Bears also have their top passer and receiver from 2008 back for another go-round to provide plenty of weaponry. Cal averaged 32.6 ppg last season to mark the sixth time in the past seven seasons the Bears scored more than 30 ppg – a feat the team accomplished just once in the eight years prior to Tedford’s arrival in 2002. Running Back

No conversation about Cal football can begin without mention of Best. All he did last year was rush for 1,580 yards – No. 3 in the country, No. 1 in the Pac-10 and No. 2 on Cal’s all-time list – and average a school-record 8.1 yards per carry. He set another Cal mark by galloping for 311 yards in the regular-season finale vs. Washington, before establishing an Emerald Bowl mark with 186 yards against Miami. Best brings a triple threat to the field as he tied for second on the Bears with 27 receptions and averaged 26.3 yards on kickoff returns. He sat out spring practice following January foot and elbow surgery for ailments suffered during the 2008 campaign. However, he began conditioning workouts in early April and is on track to be at full strength by the start of practice in August. Sophomore Shane Vereen churned his way to 715 yards and four touchdowns as Best’s backup last fall, averaging 5.0 yards per carry in his rookie season. He rushed for 101 yards in the Michigan State opener, including a game-clinching 81-yard TD sprint in the fourth quarter. Subbing for an injured Best vs. Arizona State, Vereen totaled 93 yards on the ground and 51 more on five catches to help the Bears to a 24-14 win over the Sun Devils. Redshirt-freshman Covaughn DeBoskie, a prep All-American as a high schooler in Chandler, Ariz., should provide added depth at the position. Fullback duties are up for grabs after the graduation of starter Will Ta’ufo’ou, with several players battling for the spot. Senior Brian Holley brings the most experience after serving as a backup the past two seasons, but he will be challenged by sophomores John Tyndall and Will Kapp (son of former Cal standout and coach Joe Kapp), among others.

Quarterback

Three players are competing to be the No. 1 signal caller – junior Kevin Riley, sophomore Brock Mansion and redshirt-freshman Beau Sweeney. Each showed improvement during the spring, and Tedford said the starter won’t be determined until training camp in August. Riley compiled a 7-2 record as a starter last fall when he completed 112-of-221 passes for 1,360 yards and 14 scores (only six interceptions). His best games came against Michigan State (17-of-24, 202 yards, 2 TD), at Maryland (33-of-58, 423 yards, 3 TDs) and vs. Stanford (7-of-11, 101 yards, 3 TD). As a freshman in 2007, he was named Offensive MVP when he came off the bench to guide Cal to a victory over Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl. The strong-armed Mansion saw spot duty in 2008, finishing 3-for-6 for 26 yards in late-game situations. Named Cal’s Freshman Lifter of the Year in 2007, Mansion was a prep All-American in high school in Dallas. 10

Sweeney was voted the Bears’ Co-Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year during his redshirt year last season. He led his Clovis West HS team to back-to-back state championship games as a prep.

Tight End

After the early departure of Cameron Morrah for the NFL Draft, Cal is looking for a new starter at tight end. Sophomore Anthony Miller had only one catch last season, but it was the game-winner in the Emerald Bowl against Miami with just 2:41 left in the contest. Redshirt-freshman Spencer Ladner, converted wide receiver Jarrett Sparks and senior Skylar Curran also figure into the mix. The position took a bit of a hit during the spring when senior Tad Smith, who had three catches for 23 yards and a TD as a junior last year, broke his scapula. He will be sidelined until late July, but should be challenging for time before the season opener.

Offensive Line

Although the Bears lost a pair of starters in All-America center Alex Mack and All-Pac-10 guard Noris Malele, Cal has seven players back to have earned starting assignments during their college careers. Mike Tepper is back for a sixth year after missing all of 2008 with a pectoral injury. A starter for 13 games at right tackle in 2007, he is expected to man the left side this year. Sophomore Mitchell Schwartz earned Freshman All-America notice after starting three times at right tackle and the final 10 games at left tackle in ’08. He has moved back to RT with the return of Tepper to the lineup. Junior Chris Guarnero will likely return to his more natural center spot after starting the first three games of last season at left guard. An injured toe kept him out the rest of the campaign, but he was back at full health for spring workouts. Junior Mark Boskovich, a first-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection, took over for Guarnero at guard last year and gives the Bears 10 games of starting experience at the position. Senior Chet Teofilo started seven games at tackle this past fall before being felled by an ankle injury. He can play either tackle or guard along the line. In addition, junior Donovan Edwards (six games) and sophomore Justin Cheadle (one game) also earned starts in 2008. Others to watch for positions in the rotation include Matt SummersGavin, Richard Fisher and Dominic Galas.

Wide Receiver

After having an almost entirely new batch of receivers in 2008, Cal returns four of its top-six wideouts for this fall in the form of Nyan Boateng (team-high 29 catches, 439 yards, 5 TDs), Verran Tucker (27 catches), Jeremy Ross (17) and Michael Calvin (8). Sophomores Marvin Jones, who was slowed by a knee injury last season, and Alex Lagemann, a redshirt in ’08, both had productive springs and should also get into the mix.

DEFENSE U

All four starting defensive backs return from a unit that surrendered only 12 TD passes in 13 games. First-team All-Pac-10 corner Syd’Quan Thompson has 32 passes defensed over his career (6 interceptions, 26 breakups) and is poised to break the school mark of 35 set by Chidi Iwuoma in 2000. Fellow senior Marcus Ezeff registered 66 stops at safety last year while picking off three passes. Junior Darian Hagan also had three interceptions to go with his 15 pass breakups and 56 tackles in 2008, and senior safety Brett Johnson added two picks to his resume last fall. Plenty of depth exists in the defensive backfield, including corner Chris Conte, who earned three starts as a freshman in 2007. Sean Cattouse (3 INT in ’08), Charles Amadi, Marc Anthony, Jesse Brooks, Josh Hill and Bryant Nnabuife also give the Bears plenty of talent in the secondary.

Now, the Bears have eight starters back, including their entire starting contingents along the line and in the defensive backfield.

Defensive Line

Senior end Tyson Alualu, a second-team All-Pac-10 choice in 2008, and junior end Cameron Jordan, who claimed honorable mention league honors, anchor Cal’s defensive front. Alualu ended his junior campaign with 62 tackles, most for a Bear down lineman in 13 years, while Jordan was named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week after accumulating three tackles for loss, a pair of sacks and a forced fumble in a win over Arizona State. His 11.0 tackles for loss in ’08 are the most for any returning Bear. Junior Derrick Hill, who earned nine starts last season at the tackle spot in Cal’s 3-4 set, has bulked up to 302 pounds and is expected a force in the middle. Redshirt-freshmen Kendrick Payne and Aaron Tipoti made good strides during spring practice, while sophomores Trevor Guyton and Ernest Owusu and junior Keith Browner all saw limited action in ’08 and will look for more time in ’09.

Linebacker

Cal took its biggest hit at linebacker with the graduation of three starters in Zack Follett, Worrell Williams and Anthony Felder. But the Bears seem to have the depth necessary to fill the spots with quality personnel. Senior Eddie Young returns at an outside position after registering 40 tackles a year ago, and junior Mike Mohamed, who has the ability to play any of the four spots, earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors and tied for second on the team with 87 stops despite starting just five of 13 games. In the spring, senior Devin Bishop and sophomore Mychal Kendricks both made a push to earn starting nods in the fall. Others who provide depth and will battle for playing time include D.J. unter Bryan Anger is back for his sophomore campaign after claiming second-team All-Pac-10 and first-team Freshman All-America status last year. The only freshman named a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award as the nation’s top punter, he averaged 43.1 yards per kick in 2008. David Seawright earned starting placekicking duties at the start of last season, making 5-of-7 field goals before a groin injury sidelined him the second half of the year. Georgio Tavecchio filled in the rest of the way, going 9-for-13 on field goals. Now both are healthy and competing for the nod. At long snapper, redshirt-freshman Matt Rios looks to take over for the graduated Nick Sundberg, who held the position for four years. The Bears are also solid on returns with Thompson and Best. Thompson averaged 12.3 yards on punt returns, including a 73yarder for a score vs. Colorado State last year, and Best led the Pac-10 with a 26.3 average on kickoff returns. SPRING 2009

HEAD COACH JEFF TEDFORD

ow entering his eighth season at the helm of the California football program, head coach Jeff Tedford has built a legacy that rivals the best eras in the history of the Golden Bears. And in the process, he has pushed Cal into the national spotlight, all while remaining true to his ideals of playing with class, excelling in the classroom and getting involved in the local community.

A two-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Tedford has compiled a 59-30 record that includes bowl appearances each of the last six years and a Co-Pac-10 championship in 2006. Under his leadership, the Bears have climbed into the AP National Top 10 in four different seasons. The six straight bowl berths are a first for the school, and Cal’s 5-1 record in those games makes Tedford the only Bear mentor to post more than two bowl victories. In adJeff Tedford dition, Cal’s 59 wins since 2002 are the school’s most in a seven-year stretch in more than 80 years; in the seven years before Tedford’s arrival, the Bears had 21 victories total. Tedford has had 28 first-team All-Pac-10 selections and 74 players recognized as academic all-conference. Center Alex Mack also won the 2008 Draddy Award, which is presented to the top scholar-athlete in all of college football. Of the 126 seniors who have played for Tedford, 112 (89%) have earned their degrees and/ or gone on to NFL careers. Tedford’s success with the California program has resulted in local devotion and in national attention.
