The biggest challenge included taking an existing structure with no natural daylight and long corridor like spaces and making it user friendly, while maintaining the historic status of the building. By incorporating sustainability concepts, such as adaptive re-use and by returning the exterior to its historic status, the building and interior spaces embrace the surrounding heritage through thoughtful material choices and re-purposed materials from the original building.

Utilizing mechanically operated transom windows throughout the building a stack effect can be created to help cool the building on cool evenings and days. The re-addition of the original roof monitor allowed for stack ventilation and natural daylight. Creating an atrium through the center of the building allows for the natural daylight to penetrate all four levels.

Local Restaurant & Bar Embraces the concept of community. With a large central table for having family style dinners and a modern kitchen bar to remind people of their favorite diner the restaurant integrates with the community culture. It Also seeks to support local agriculture by offering a menu catered to what is available and in season.
Riverwalk Outdoor Center The outdoor center offers retail for outdoor gear, and experts to assist in guided tours. The design provides ease of use for employees and occupants by utilizing low shelving to increase natural daylight penetration and creating more views of the store to aid in security.
North Carolina State Park Office and Education Center Is in response to the new adjacent state park. The design responds to a need for park officials offices and an education outreach program. It offers environmental education classes and features a living machine to offer hands on experience. The second level houses offices for state park officials.
The Meeting House Is a new take on the local community building. The space offers a large meeting hall with attached kitchen, child care space, and three smaller meeting rooms all which can be reserved for special occasions or meetings.
The Lofts at Riverside The incorporation of residences responds to the need for new housing in the area. A goal of the design was to create affordable housing that would appeal to the masses, while maintaining a budget during construction. To accomplish this all lofts are based around a single pod design, containing a bathroom, kitchen, and storage.

Golden Isle Senior Living Community St. Simmons Island, Georgia Square Footage - 40,000 Date - Sept.-Dec. 2009 Designer - Cortney Albert Programs - AutoCAD 2009, Google SketchUP 8, Photoshop Golden Isle Senior Living Community is designed to provide care for those in skilled nursing and memory care The overall goal of the design was to create a healthcare facility that promotes residents living as a community, as well as provides biophilic attributes throughout the interior space that will help connect occupants to nature. Meeting both of these design criteria along with following the criteria for the Green Guide for Healthcare, create an interior where occupant comfort is higher, creating a space where the resident can thrive. Biophilia is the basic human need for nature and the design not only optimizes views and outdoor space but also has natures footprint represented in its design through space, materials, and finishes. The interior is also planned with Alzheimer’s patients in mind by using thoughtful color considerations, memory ques to remind residents where they are, and offering wandering paths to keep them busy.

Biomimicry was the concept which most influenced design. In looking at nature and how things occur naturally I was inspired by the interior spiral of a conch shell. This naturally occurring form can self-repair, which are qualities that the facility hopes to instill in its residents. The interior spiral of the conch shell is also the basis of the Fibonacci spiral, which is represented through the main floor space plan of the building.

LINE Ski’s Satellite Office Greenwood Village, Colorado Square Footage - 38,000 Date - May-July 2009 Designer - Cortney Albert Programs - AutoCAD 2009, Google SketchUP 7, Photoshop The concept behind the design of Line Ski’s office space is Integrate. Integrate means to mix or merge. This is relevant because in recent years the company merged with K2 Sports. In my design I sought to give the company an office space of their own which showcased their innovation and style. Since their recent merger with K2 Sports the company has not had a place to formally call home. The space plan for this office took into consideration how the employees work and what other departments they work with. This is the basis for the design, to create a space where the departments can integrate with each other, offering ease of use for occupants which will also help to increase productivity. Integration was also taken into consideration when creating the reception and waiting areas. This space can be used as flex space and could be re-configured to hold company screening events. Other considerations were sustainability, which included use of local materials, natural daylight throughout the space, energy efficiency, and strategies to improve occupant well being and productivity. Such strategies include creating two wellness rooms, with views and natural daylight, where employees can go on break or just to clear their heads.

Venida Palo Cuisine of Espana & Vintage Wine Littleton, Colorado Square Footage - 5,644 Date - Jan-Apr 2009 Designer - Cortney Albert, Anne Marie Dunbar, Shana Franeschinni Programs - AutoCAD 2009, Hand Rendering, Photoshop The project goal was to collaborate with a design team and graphic designers to create a design for a restaurant and retail space that would include interior design and branding for the resturant and retail space. Venida Palo is a resturant designed to help the client increase space and number of customers as well as include a retial space to appeal to the surrounding community. The restaurant features modern costal flavors of Spain, while the retail portion specializes in spanish wine. Sustainability was a focus and can be seen in the minimal disturbance of existing building elements. Through the introduction of movable glass walls on the exterior, natural ventilation and daylighting was added to the space. Consideration was also placed on all furniture, fabrics, finishes, and materials used in the project making sure they were either (or had multiple qualities) low VOC, contained recycled content, were recyclable at the end of the product life cycle, or was a rapidly renewable/ reclaimed material. My personal contribution to the project included entry and patio re-design, giving the entrance a contemporary look. I also conceptualized the wine wall lighting and design, as well as participation in all design decisions. I also kept the design on point with LEED concepts for Commercial Interiors (v2.2) helping produce an overall design that has the possibility of a Gold Rating with 34 points.

Blanding’s Residence Re-model Littleton, Colorado Square Footage - 2,358 Date - Sept-Dec 2008 Designer - Cortney Albert Programs - Hand Drafting and Rendering The Blanding’s are remodeling their home to better accommodate their upcoming needs. They plan to agein-place and want to consider the concept of universal design. The home is located in Colorado, so they would like the deign to reflect the vernacular of the area. The family loves to entertain and recently spent money on landscaping for their back yard, due to this they also hope to incorporate the new space into the re-design of their home. My concept for the home is based off a series of words; macrocosm, essence, and transition. Macrocosm is a system reflecting on a large scale one of its component systems or parts. Through environment and sustainability an open and organic design will help to create the essence of a home that will transition in time to grow as the family changes and ages.

The changes to the existing floor plan gives the client the accessibility and convenience that they need. By making the first floor ADA accessible this helps to create a home in which the owners can age in. By creating an exterior door to the home office the mix of public and private spaces is eliminated. Since this home includes a mixture of family, I hope to reinforce the aspect of individuality through creating spaces for each person to retreat to. The design will also introduce nature into the main living space, emphasizing the recent landscaping and providing a new entertainment experience.

Custom Furniture Built-In Date - Nov 2009 Designer - Cortney Albert Programs - Google SketchUP 8 The intent of the project was to design a built-in piece of furniture, and provide blow-apart drawings for construction. For my design I was inspired by small spaces, such as a loft apartment. The piece is designed to respond to the needs of people living in open spaces, or would work in any room to offer storage and separation.
TV Console View with Dimensions
The piece has two sides, one being a dresser, and side two acting as a TV console. The TV console is designed to be hidden, and has a retractable television with remote motor, and two storage cabinets. The materials selected for the piece are 3-form resin veneers which look like wood but offer more durability. A unique feature of this design is that it looks and acts as a built-in but has hidden lockable wheels that can be used to relocate the piece to new space, extending the life of the product by allowing it have multiple uses.

Custom Furniture Table Date - Sept 2009 Designer - Cortney Albert Programs - Google SketchUP 8 The purpose of this project was to design a table and provide drawings to go with it. I was inspired by the canopy of bamboo forests and how the leaves make small light pockets when you look toward the sky. Wanting to keep this design inspired by nature I decided to tie the bamboo the same way reeds have been tied for many years.
Inspiration Photos: Bamboo Canopy, Tied bamboo
The outcome is a coffee table that embraces natural elements, combined with glass to give it a modern touch that could be integrated into any living space. One additional feature to this table is that the base can be lit from the bottom with addition of a puc light. Giving the appearance of a bamboo canopy as the light seeps through the crevices created by the tied bamboo. Perspective of table in room
