NVQS

BTECS

ENGLISH & MATHS

NVQs are job-specific, providing you with the knowledge needed to do a job effectively. They are available to anyone, at any age or stage of their career development.

BTECs are vocational and occupationally relevant courses which help you gain knowledge and specific skills in your chosen area. They are well recognised by employers and universities.

Every 16-18 year old without a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths will have to study these subjects at College. This can include Functional Skills and ESOL qualifications or if appropriate, GCSE resists.

The central feature of NVQs is the National Occupational Standards (NOS) on which they are based. NOS are statements of performance standards, that describe what level of competency people work at, in a particular occupation. They cover all the main aspects of an occupation, including current best practice, the ability to adapt to future requirements, and the knowledge and understanding that underpins competent performance. APPRENTICESHIPS Anyone aged 16+ can earn while they learn on an Apprenticeship. There are a wide range of opportunities to suit your ability and job preferences. By working to a structured plan and gaining work experience you will achieve an Apprenticeship framework that reflects your ability. Functional Skills are a requirement for an Apprenticeship framework. If you have not achieved a GCSE Grade 4 or equivalent in English, Maths or a Technical Certificate, then you will work on these skills with help from your vocational tutor, so that you achieve at least a Level 2 in all areas.

All courses are primarily taught through assignment work and are tested through assignments and time-limited assessments. BTEC Awards and Certificates are accreditations for completing some units but not the full Diploma. VRQS VRQs are practical courses that are usually assessed by tests and coursework. They are available in work related subjects such as Hairdressing, and are more job specific than other qualifications. Whilst studying a VRQ you will gain knowledge, understanding and skills for a broad area of work and range of jobs. TRAINEESHIPS A Traineeship is an education and skills training programme with work experience, that prepares young people for their future career by making them ‘work ready’.

HE PROGRESSION We offer a range of Adult Education and Higher Education courses including full-time and part-time BA(Hons) degrees, foundation degrees and Access to HE courses. You can study alongside full-time jobs, childcare and other responsibilities. You can be part of a small community of around 300 students, with industry experienced tutors and resources from other universities.

9/10

students move onto employment or further study

This course is designed to help young people aged 16-24 who aren’t sure what chosen area they want to go into. The pathway includes English and Maths, interview skills and work related knowledge.

SHOPPING

THE WORLD ON A PLATE

Halifax has its very own Woolshops Shopping Centre with 40 popular chain stores and cafés. The recently renovated Piece Hall, is a Grade 1 Listed building conservation project creating a 21st century heritage visitor attraction, with cafés and restaurants, a wealth of independent specialist shops, and a select number of creative business premises.

You’ll find some of the best international cafés, restaurants and takeaways in the UK, especially in Yorkshire’s urban areas. South Asian and Far Eastern food is particularly good here, and Bradford was the first UK destination to win ‘Curry Capital of Britain’ three times in a row!

The 60,000 square foot courtyard, with its fantastic arcades and colonnades, offers a beautiful central meeting place for the town, and one of the most stunning outdoor event spaces in Britain. HISTORY

Halifax

History and culture are everywhere you look in Calderdale, and much of it is free to enjoy. If you like museums, you’ll love visiting ours: Bankfield Museum, Eureka! Children’s Museum and the Calderdale Industrial Museum.

There’s traditional English grub too, and Yorkshire puddings obviously don’t get any better than the ones our pubs serve. For something a little more sophisticated, Yorkshire is home to six Michelin starred restaurants – more than any other county in England. LIVE IT UP In Halifax, the Victoria Theatre has a rich programme of events spanning everything from comedy and pantomime to ballet and live music. Near Halifax and around the county, small independent cinemas show art house and world films not screened at the region’s many mainstream cinemas. Broadstreet Plaza offers various restaurant choices including Pizza Express, TGI Fridays, Nando’s and Frankie & Benny’s. Vue Cinema and PureGym are also at the Plaza which is in the perfect location in the town centre.

WHY I CHOSE CALDERDALE

SUPPORTIVE TUTORS

Before I started studying my Level 3 Business at Calderdale College I was studying at Thornton Grammar School.

My tutors are great and they don’t put too much pressure on me, which gives me more confidence in my own work.

Calderdale College was recommended by my secondary school teachers and they claimed it was a better choice for me than other colleges and schools in the area.

Since I have started my second year, they have taken a step back because they expect us to use more of our own initiative.

Business is everywhere! I would recommend my course to anyone who is interested in Business, by having realistic knowledge about the sector and various skills and knowledge you need to excel in the career, it can help you a lot. By doing Business it maximises that knowledge and it can help you in many business related activities.

ENCOURAGING PROGRESS

Tyler Ochiobi Level 3 Business

I would definitely recommend Calderdale College for the Business course, especially since the facilities and teaching is second to none.

Skills Gained at Calderdale

My next step is to progress onto University to study Project Management.

• Growth in Confidence

• Leadership • Communication • Problem Solving • Using Initiative

I would describe Calderdale College as fun, relaxed and friendly.

WHY I CHOSE CALDERDALE I started at the College on the Early College Transfer programme, studying my GCSE English and Maths. I then decided to do a vocational course in Painting & Decorating at Level 1. I am currently studying my City & Guilds Level 2 Qualification in Painting & Decorating.

I progressed onto my Level 2 and I am absolutely loving it! People think this course might be easy but you have to get things perfectly right and maths is a big factor. Painting & Decorating is a very creative course and I particularly enjoy the decorative paint effects, such as wood marbling and using colour wheels to mix colours.

SUPPORTIVE TUTORS I enjoy college and really get along with my tutor Anne, she is a massive support. I would definitely recommend this course! I have learnt some amazing skills so far with the biggest obviously being Painting and Decorating.

ENCOURAGING PROGRESS Because I was home educated, I have also learnt one of the most important skills to me at College which is ‘people skills’understanding how to deal with different groups of people, on a day to day and professional level. I have recently been involved with work experience, where I was hanging and lining wallpaper for a company who were renovating a house.

Savannah Morris-Dent Level 2 Painting & Decorating Skills Gained at Calderdale • Social & People Skills • Practical Skills • Growth in Employability Skills • Development in Maths Skills • Work Experience

I have gained employability skills that are invaluable. I am currently looking for an apprenticeship and my intention is to complete my Level 3 to be fully qualified in Painting & Decorating. My ultimate goal would be to gain as much experience as possible in the work environment, then become self-employed and start my own Painting and Decorating business.

WHY I CHOSE CALDERDALE I was able to study for a year on the CACHE Technical Certificate Programme at Level 3. This worked in my favour as I currently have tariff points but need to gain more to be able to study my chosen subject at university, which I am able to achieve by studying on this course.

Calderdale supports success, development and progression. I would recommend my course, as you are given the opportunity to complete placement hours in a suitable location that will be beneficial when progressing onto higher education or employment. The course also creates the expectation that will be required at higher education, this is achieved by deadlines being set. It is helpful for me as I gain skills in time management and organisation.

SUPPORTIVE TUTORS Both of my tutors are supportive and approachable, so I know that any problem that may occur in both my personal and educational life I will be able to share information with them, to prevent my education being affected. I also find both my tutors to be realistic, which is helpful as I know that what I put into the course I will get out, if I remain motivated and dedicated I will achieve the best grade that I possibly can.

ENCOURAGING PROGRESS The three words I would use to describe Calderdale College are; Consistent, Supportive and Encouraging. My ultimate goal is to complete this course and achieve the best possible grade that I can.
