Israel's ports enjoyed mixed fortunes in 2011, with container throughput at Haifa, and total tonnage at Eilat, experiencing contractions. Ashdod enjoyed strong growth in containers, however, climbing by 15.5% on 2010. BMI projects that Ashdod will overtake Haifa to become Israel's biggest box port in 2014. 2012 will see slow growth across the board, as Israel struggles with a drop in export demands from its key trade partners in the eurozone. A strong private consumption story will soften the impact of this slightly. Headline Industry Data 2012 Port of Haifa total tonnage throughput to grow by 6.4%, and to average 4.6% to 2016. 2012 box handling at Haifa will grow by 0.9% to 1.25mn TEUs. Growth projected to average 3.9% to2016.The real value of Israeli foreign trade will grow at 3.9% in 2012 and will average 4.1% to the end of our forecast period. Key Industry Trends Eilat's Container Dreams Start To Take Off, RCL Set To Call The development of Israel's Port of Eilat into a container facility has received another vote of confidence, with Thailand's Regional Container Lines (RCL) set to link the facility with ports in the Far East. BMI believes that the Port of Eilat holds considerable box shipping potential, especially with privatisation at the port underway and the Israeli government pushing for the development of better freight links further up the supply chain. Ashdod Aims To Keep Up With Bigger Box Ship Trend While 2012 looks set to be a tough time for Israel's port sector, as weakening demand from the US and Europe - the country's main export destinations - will feed through to a slowdown in throughput at its ports, BMI highlights one bright spot on the horizon, with the Port of Ashdod scheduled to handle its largest ever box ship in January. Haifa Port Deploys New Terminal Operating System Israeli port operator Haifa Port Company (HPC) has installed the new Navis SPARCS N4 terminal operating system (TOS) to replace a 20-year-old container management system at the Port of Haifa. The advanced TOS is expected to help the operator to deliver long-term growth goals at the port's four container terminals: Haifa West, Haifa East, Kishon and Carmel. Key Risks To Outlook Continued political turmoil in Israel's Middle Eastern neighbours, especially within Egypt and Syria, offers both up and downside risk to BMI's forecasts for Israel's macroeconomics and port throughputs. Further weakness in the economies of the US and eurozone could depress external demand and constrain economic growth.
