WHAT MAKES A GOOD CITY?
PUBLIC TRANSIT EDUCATION AFFORDABLE HOUSING PARKS
A good city consists of several systems containing many subsystems that ultimately have a domino effect on the city. These systems fall into diverse categories that have different effects on the city as a whole or individuals who have seen direct results due to the failures in the system. A great city also recognizes failing systems, corrects them, and ultimately learns from them.

GREEN ISLET represents the transition of the heat island into usable green space by incorporating individual plots for residents to grow gardens. Currently, this concrete jungle lacks many of the basic necessities for the community to use to their advantage. Without grocery stores and schools, plus little residential, the West Bottoms revitalization plan stands idle. By using the three E’s of sustainability, I propose the Green Islet to offer a safe habitat, equitable work and educational environment for all, yet consider the effect a building has on it’s natural surroundings.

GREEN ISLET
The bow tie module was inspired by the existing brick daylight warehouses.
From elevation, it appears the modules fit together such as brick coursing, but from perspective, you see the true depth of each unit.
FALL 2020
Modular design makes for easy mass production. Then, in a brick-like bond, stacked up to form larger massing.

9 SKETCHES
Delaware Street Commons lies quietly in residential Eastern Lawrence, Kansas. With over twenty years at this location, the community have begun centering their focus on self efficiency while providing for the community of Lawrence. However, existing conditions have prohibited much growth in that ideology. Lacking in essential tools, space, and a built environment has halted the expansion of Delaware Street Commons. Our studio welcomed the great task of designing a building where the community can begin working in as well as feel at home.
16 PICTURE COLLAGE 9 SKETCHES The 9 sketches represent the ideologies comprising the design. Focused around environmental systems including green roof, water collection, solar collection and recycling materials. While also using these methods to power the building and educate vistors.
16 PICTURE COLLAGE The images express a stronger understanding of materiality and flow throughout the space. I’d prefer using natural materials such as wood to create a warmth within the building, but also use concrete for easy cleaning in the dirty environments such as garden and shops.

RIPPLE
The purpose of the found objects model was to create a material pallette for finalizing our building. It was enjoyable for me because as I found different pieces that peaked my interest, I pondered how to include it. I started with a 2”x 6” scrap of red oak lumber, then found the rectangular steel tube. I welded a stand for it and drilled holes into the wood for all-thread. The all thread held the plexiglass above the wood, demonstrating my intention for the curtain wall to pertrude from the interior skin.

RIPPLE
My conceptual design consisted of using as much of the site as possible without overcrowding it. Keeping the profile of the new building fairly tamed also complemented the existing structures nearby. This helped with the balance of the site and cohesion of the community. The roof height does not extend above any existing roof plus the slope follows the natural contour of the site.
By drawing lines off existing buildings, rooms such as the library, auditorium, greenhouse and workshop formed naturally. They also served as the crest and trough of the wavy green roof designed to catch rain water. SPRING 2020

The initial program of the Discovery Garden project consisted of a new entryway into the public area of the garden. However, we decided to attract visitors with a gathering space doubling as a new experience in education too. All inspired from a migration map of Monarch butterflies.
