RIPPLE EAST LAWRENCE, KANSAS - SPRING 2020 7
9 SKETCHES
Delaware Street Commons lies quietly in residential Eastern Lawrence, Kansas. With over twenty years at this location, the community have begun centering their focus on self efficiency while providing for the community of Lawrence. However, existing conditions have prohibited much growth in that ideology. Lacking in essential tools, space, and a built environment has halted the expansion of Delaware Street Commons. Our studio has welcomed the great task of designing a building where the community can begin working in as well as feel at home.

9 SKE TCHES
The 9 sketches represent the ideologies comprising the design. Focused around environmental systems including green roof, water collection, solar collection and recycling materials. While also using these methods to power the building and educate visitors.
16 PICTURE COLL AGE
The images express a stronger understanding of materiality and flow throughout the space. I’d prefer using natural materials such as wood to create a warmth within the building, but also use concrete for easy cleaning in the dirty environments such as garden and shops. 8
RIPPLE
The purpose of the found objects model was to create a material pallette for finalizing our building. It was enjoyable for me because as I found different pieces that peaked my interest, I pondered how to include it. I started with a 2x 6 scrap of red oak lumber, then found the rectangular steel tube. I welded a stand for it and drilled holes into the wood for all-thread. The all thread held the plexiglass above the wood,

My conceptual design consisted of using as much of the site as possible without overcrowding it. Keeping the profile of the new building fairly tamed also complemented the existing structures nearby. This helped with the balance of the site and cohesion of the community. The roof height does not extend above any existing roof plus the slope follows the natural contour of the site.
By drawing lines off existing buildings, rooms such as the library, auditorium, greenhouse and workshop formed naturally. They also served as the crest and trough of the wavy green roof designed to catch rain water. SPRING 2020

Positioned in the quiet, residential area of Northern Lawrence, this shade structure and entryway aims to attract visitors of all walks of life.
DISCOVERY GARDEN NORTH LAWRENCE, KANSAS - FALL 2019

The initial program of the Discovery Garden project consisted of a new entryway into the public area of the garden. However, we decided to attract visitors with a

Located in downtown Lawrence, this modern day Farmer’s Market signifies the importance of small business and supporting local farmers. As well as a unique experience into the future of farmer’s markets.

CROSSROADS AT LAWRENCE DOWNTOWN LAWRENCE, KANSAS - FALL 2018 35
Currently, the Farmer’s Market layout consists of five unofficial entrances through
current circulation patterns
the alleyway and two surrounding streets causing confusion through irregular circulation. By cutting off all entrances except two at the western edge of the site, an “X” shaped pattern appears. Thus becoming the primary influencer in design.

During the conceptual design phase of my project, I chose to use the spacing between storefronts along Massachusetts street as a grid to bisect bedrooms and the living room. Each southern facade is twenty-five feet in length similar to the dimensions of the storefronts

A water collection and filtration system modeled after Santa Monica’s Water Treatment Plant trickles through the backyard. Waste water and runoff collected from the home flows through a four part filtration 58
system for reusable, clean water allowing for minimal water usage.
