xcitement is mounting for the 2012 Utah International Auto Expo. Set to roll into South Towne Exposition Center Friday January 13 – 16, this huge array of automobiles, exhibits and displays is certain to delight attendees. “The Utah International Auto Expo is the largest new car display in the intermountain area,” said Craig Bickmore, executive director of New Car Dealers of Utah, the association that owns the expo. “In addition to having a lot of fun, our goal is to educate the public about the exciting new vehicles coming to the market to meet their automobile needs. The best way to do that is with a one-stop approach at the expo.” The Ford Drive One Experience and Chevrolet, Buick, GMC — Experience the Drive will be on site for attendees who want to take the experience up a notch and slip behind the wheel for a test drive. For those who want to take a ride but stay indoors, the expo offers the much anticipated Camp Jeep®, with its interactive Jeep test track that takes riders on a highadventure course demonstrating the off-road capabilities of the vehicle. In addition, Jeep is setting up Jeep Kids Course with kid-sized Jeeps for the younger set, as well as a 25-foot climbing wall to entertain children while they wait in line. “Camp Jeep brings a whole new level of excitement to this year’s Auto Expo,” Bickmore said. A thrilling showcase of high-end exotics from Ferrari and Maserati will be on display courtesy of Steve Harris Imports. The impressive list features the SAAPERTA, an

Jeep :: Wrangler Head designer for Jeep Mark Davis says his job is easy when it comes to the Wrangler: “Don’t screw it up.” That’s largely because the staple of Jeep’s roster, the ultrautilitarian Wranger, hasn’t changed much on the outside since the Eisenhower administration. But just like grade school, it’s worth learning that it’s what’s on the inside that matters. This year’s Wrangler is the beneficiary of Chrysler’s do-it-all engine, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, that’s now in everything from minivans to sedans. The result of packing the V6 between the rugged fenders is an immediate boost in horsepower — 253 from 202 — and in fuel economy — up to 21 mpg from 19 mpg. It’s a dramatic improvement for the Wrangler, and has helped propel Jeep’s sales in the last two years from abysmal to stratospheric in the automaker’s turnaround from bankruptcy. The Wrangler is also treading into luxury territory with interior options like available heated leather seats and Uconnect systems like Bluetooth streaming audio. Those may be far removed from the Wrangler’s days as a brass tacks, go-anywhere beast, but it’s also completely allowable considering the Wrangler is still a go-anywhere beast. We’ll be waiting in Moab to see what Jeep has in store for Easter Jeep Safari.
Jeep :: Grand Cherokee Now two years after the Grand Cherokee’s overhaul, and the full-size SUV doesn’t seem to be losing any steam. The flagship SUV for Jeep is still going strong, and after last year’s debut of the Grand Cherokee SRT8, it’s still going fast too. This year’s changes to the Grand Cherokee are largely cosmetic and minor, with a few new trim levels to talk about. Under the hood is still an option between a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine or a 5.7-liter V8 in pricier models. Both models come paired to a six-speed automatic transmission that capably puts power to the road and maximizes fuel economy in the V6 up to 23 mpg on the highway. The SRT8 model comes with a 6.2-liter behemoth that powers the SUV from 0-60 mph in around 5 seconds. The Overland Summit has been a big seller for Jeep since it’s introduction, as many Grand Cherokee buyers are looking for more “grand” in the model. Heated and ventilated leather seats, satellite navigation and wood accents underscore the model’s opulence. Not much is likely to change in the Grand Cherokee this year as Jeep rides its current success into this year and beyond. Something tells us though that the Grand Cherokee may see an 8-speed automatic sometime soon though.

The iconic Chrysler full-size sedan is back, but the attitude it was famous for has been slightly toned back. Redesigned in 2011, the four-door sedan that was popular with younger people for it’s aggressive profile and high beltline has been toned down but the car still packs plenty of style. The new model features subtler styling and occupies a more luxury-style profile that’ll appeal to mature buyers. Not withstanding however was the powertrain improvements that the 300 underwent with its redesign. Chrysler deployed its near-universal 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that cranks out 253 horsepower on the entry-level 300 along with a more robust 5.7-liter Hemi for people looking for more power under the hood. Inside, Chrysler threw a larger touchscreen for nearly all of the car’s controls as well as a single-panel dash that sweeps from driver to passenger in one swoop. The effect is elegant as well as pleasing to the eye. The 300 is also available in SRT8 spec for people asking the most from the engine, and the 392 cubic-inch engine propels the 300 from 0-60 in just under 6 seconds. There’s plenty to like about the new model, even if the styling is more sedate, as the updated interior and exterior offers a much more luxurious feel for the Chrysler hauler. Seating for five in the 300 is spacious and the soft-touch materials are comparable to sedans that can cost up to twice as much. A mid-year update planted Chrysler’s 8-speed automatic transmission to maximize fuel economy, and reports say the sedan can reach up to 30 mpg in highway cruising. Some may lament the fact that the “gangster is gone” with the 2012 Chrysler 300 and 2013 Chrysler 300, but there’s no doubt that Chrysler is looking toward the future with their critically acclaimed sedan.

Ram’s full-size entry into the pickup market is as versatile as ever now. Outfitted in countless editions with dozens of powertrain and size configurations, the Ram 1500 is a workhorse when it needs to be and refined when asked. Three engine options are available for the Ram 1500 this year, a 3.7-liter V6, 5.7-liter V8 and 4.7-liter V8. Two- and four-wheel-drive options are available throughout the range. Perhaps the Ram 1500’s biggest strength is its adaptability to different circumstances based on usage. This year Ram brought out countless editions of the truck to appeal to different buyers based on lifestyle. Popular editions included the Outdoorsman, built to maximize storage and tough terrain, along with a work-ready Tradesman edition geared toward fleet buyers and cost-conscious buyers. Of course, capability is everything when it comes to pickups and the Ram holds ground when it comes to that as well. The Tradesman HD boasts an 11,500 lbs. trailer rating along with an over 3,000 lbs. payload capacity. The 5.7-liter V8 has been updated as well, offering 390 horsepower, over 400 ft.-lbs. of torque and a 20-mpg EPA rating. This year may see incremental upgrades to the Ram lineup and Ram has announced that it will be testing plug-in models this year to perhaps skew the Ram toward alternative fuel options for the future.

Audi :: Q7 Audi’s biggest SUV has also been a big seller here in Utah. The three-row, sevenpassenger Q7 was a late entrant into the crowded luxury SUV market when it debuted in the U.S. only a few years ago. Now the upscale SUV is among the segment leaders with a opulent interior and two solid powertrain options. The Q7 is available in either a supercharged V6 model or a more fuel-efficient 3.0-liter diesel model. Both options provide ample power for the large SUV to haul, carry or tow just about anything on the planet. Inside the Audi Q7 is plenty big enough to carry most Utah families in style. Audi’s MMI system has been refined over the years and offers one of the more intuitive systems for entertainment and convenience. Both diesel and supercharged models deliver nearly 300 horsepower and between 300 and 400 ft.-lbs. of torque (more in the diesel model) as well as all-wheel-drive via Quattro systems. Last year Audi introduced a more performance-oriented S line model for the Q7 that could output more than 330 horsepower and this year Audi is rumored to introduce more weight-saving advancements to make the Q7 more efficient and quicker.
Audi :: A6 Car and Driver’s Steve Siler famously said that while no car is perfect, the new 2012 Audi A6 is a car nearing perfection. And so far, every critic and customer to sit behind the wheel has agreed. The redesigned A6 features a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that churns out more than 300 horsepower and has been the volume seller in the U.S. The engine has been praised for it’s brisk acceleration (the car rockets up to 60 mph from 0 in just over 5 seconds) and it’s supreme response throughout the power band. When paired with Audi’s legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive system, the Audi is capable and confident on the road. Similarly, the interior has been updated and refined and represents a monumental step forward for the German luxury carmaker. The wraparound styling offers a spacious and bright greenhouse for driver and passengers and the redesigned seats offer plenty of bolstering and support during spirited drives. Audi also focused efforts on new technology in the sedan, underscored by the latest generation Audi MMI information controls. As with all Audis, the car can be equipped with myriad entertainment and safety systems for well-heeled buyers looking for the most from their sedan. A 2.0-liter turbocharged model is available and produces more than 210 horsepower while delivering nearly 30 mpg on the highway. This year should see incremental upgrades to the A6, and Audi may be preparing a Porsche-fighting RS6 model to deliver ultimate performance for luxury buyers. Stay tuned.

Acura :: TL It has been out for nearly nine months now but the 2012 Acura TL has still been a strong seller for the luxury brand. The four-door sedan received a minor facelift from 2011 but still retained it’s dynamic driving characteristic. The design change was a bit of a departure from the typical Acura range, but so far critics and fans alike seem to approve of the new design scheme. Two mildly different powertrain options are available on the TL, a 3.5-liter V6 and a 3.7-liter V6. The latter powers the all-wheel drive version of the sedan. Inside, there are plenty of interior accessories to live up to the Acura badge up front. Base price for the TL begins at $35,605 and comes standard with an 8-speaker stereo system, Bluetooth connection, power heated seats, moonroof and leather wrapped steering wheel. Navigation and rearview camera are available as options as are ventilated front seats. Fans of the TL will know that the sedan powers well past the traditional “sedan” moniker and into sports sedan territory with 0-60 times around 6 seconds. That’s brisk for any car, but especially brisk considering the car weighs nearly 4,000 lbs. Acura folks have been tight-lipped about their plans for 2013, but a rumored coupe version could be coming. And if it’s anything like the sedan, it may just be a showstopper for the Acura brand.
Acura :: MDX Acura’s sturdy and steady SUV may be ending its second generation soon, which means good things for buyers in 2012. The rock-solid SUV has been a big seller for Acura in the mountain states thanks to its spacious and accommodating interior, turbo V6 and comparatively low price. The MDX’s biggest selling point thus far has been its three-row capacity that puts it alongside the BMW X5 as the only mid-sized luxury SUV with capacity for 7 without being a school bus. The 3.7-liter turbocharged engine remains the bedrock for the MDX with power twisting through all four wheels thanks to Acura’s Super Handling All Wheel Drive system. The engine produces a weighty 300 horsepower and 270 ft.-lbs. of torque, plenty to blast through powder. Inside the MDX prides itself on having a supple interior that makes the SUV attractive. Premium audio is available as an option, as are navigation and a climate control system that activates, partially, on the position of the sun. Savvy buyers know that the best time to get a good deal on a car is toward the end of a life cycle, typically when engineers have maxed out a car’s potential. That time may prove to be now because the MDX should be in line for an overhaul in 2013, although nothing official has been announced. If the third generation is anything like the second, it’ll mean that Acura has a solid SUV for Utah on its hands again.

Hyundai :: Veloster America, meet perhaps the most unique car on the market. The Hyundai Veloster is a bit of a headscratcher to classify. The car is very much a hatchback coupe, however it has three passenger doors — one on the driver’s side and two on the passenger side — and can seat four. The Veloster is the brainchild of Hyundai engineers who wanted to create a unique car for the American and European markets, and they did just that. Early indications from critics and carbuyers is that the Veloster is incredible value for money, and while nothing is perfect, the Veloster is much closer than Hyundais of the past have been. Powered by 1.6-liter four cylinder engine, the car is brisk but not too quick and can get up to 40 mpg on the highway — big for buyers in its range. The Veloster also comes with parent-friendly hardware called BlueLink that can identify to parents when a certain speed has been exceeded, where the car is and even how loud the stereo is. The Veloster should be getting more improvements this year, but it’s unclear if Hyundai will attempt an R-spec speedster this year or next.
Hyundai :: Elantra The number to remember here is 40. That’s the mileage estimate that Hyundai can hit with its new Elantra, a car built to fight rising gas prices. The whole Hyundai range turned heads last year with the introduction of surprisingly good cars like the Sonata, Elantra and Equus, and it’s no shock: the cars offer incredible value for money. Starting at around $15,000 the Elantra is a budget car with plenty of accessories to boot. Hyundai can offer all of that because of their famous in-house steel manufacturer and South Korean facilities. Combating the stereotype of old Korean cars before it, the quality and craftsmanship that have gone into cars like the Elantra is winning over buyers from other import brands. It remains to be seen how much flexibility Hyundai has with the Elantra and whether the automaker will turbocharge or hybridize the 1.8-liter four cylinder engine it has in the Elantra. Inside the car is roomy and spacious, and even though ti competes head-to-head with other small cars like the Honda Civic and Toyota Carolla, the Elantra is actually classified as a mid-size car. The Elantra comes standard with a six-speed manual or can be equipped with a fuel-saving automatic transmission. Expect to see an Elantra hatchback later this year as a new edition for the Hyundai range.
Hyundai :: Sonata Easily one of the most talked about cars last year was the surprising Hyundai Sonata, which went on sale in late 2010. Completely redesigned, the Sonata has been gaining fans everywhere for it’s new, bolder styling and attractive engine choices — and those are just the stingy critics. While the standard model offers a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, Hyundai is also offering the Sonata in a 2.0-liter turbocharged model and a 2.4-liter hybrid model as well. But equally as impressive as the engine options, the Sonata’s interior too has been winning praise for its comfort, fit and finish. On sale last January, the Sonata is expected to continue gaining a lot of ground for the Korean brand. Hyundai is hoping the Sonata will win a lot of conquest sales from traditional brands like Toyota, Honda, Mazda and all of the domestic automakers too. The standard 2.4-liter churns out 198 horsepower, while the sporty turbo spins out 274 horsepower. Both models can return upward of 30 mpg in combined driving as well, an impressive mark for a midsized sedan. All models are fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission. Inside the Sonata is plush and comfortable, a rare find for a car that begins under $20,000. Options range and the Sonata can be just as pricey as its competitors, but as a finalist for North American Car of the Year in 2010, apparently the Sonata has something they may not.
Hyundai :: Genesis The model that may have changed everything for Hyundai is back again this year and still just as exciting. When it was released a few years ago, the Hyundai Genesis redefined what people thought the Korean automaker was really about. The quality of the materials, the build and the ride was light years ahead of anything that Hyundai had released before. This year the Genesis remains largely the same, with a slight boost in horsepower in its 5.0-liter V8 engine. Inside, the Genesis will retain the luxe materials and feel that made it so popular. You’d be hard pressed to find softer leather than the cows at Hyundai laid down their lives for. Outside the Genesis is just as refined as it has been. The lack of Hyundai badging is interesting as the Equus line may take the same direction as the Genesis. A coupe version is available again this year and brings the rearwheel sedan solidly back into the performance realm it was developed in. Starting at $34,200, the Genesis has its sights set on lofty competitors like the BMW 5-series, Lexus GS, Infiniti M and Mercedes E-Class, but anyone who has driven one will tell you that it’s a realistic goal for the surprising carmaker out of Korea.

Range Rover :: Evoque
Ford :: Mustang
The news at Range Rover (by extension, Land Rover) these days is the automaker’s brand new model, the Evoque. A much smaller SUV, the Evoque is a fundamental shift for the company in response to a growing market for more affable, friendly crossover vehicles. The Evoque utilizes a uni-body construction for the crossover’s skeleton that results in a smoother ride and easier access. Land Rover uses body-on frame construction for many of its vehicles resulting in legendary capability, but also rough rides. The Evoque is nearly two feet shorter than the parent Range Rover and nearly 400 lbs. lighter. Still fitted with every interior luxury that the Range Rover offers, the Evoque should appeal to buyers looking for the Range Rover experience without the Range Rover’s fuel cost. Despite being a bit of a softer off-roader than the other Range Rovers, the Evoque is turning heads early based on its off-road chops. Rover’s Terrain Response system is standard in the Evoque, and the 2-liter, inline 4-cylinder engine churns out an astonishingly powerful 240 horsepower. Range Rover is hoping that big things will come from this small package.
Presumably, one would expect that Ford’s most iconic car would go the way of the rest of their fleet and trade horsepower for MPG amidst an energy concern and rising fuel prices. One would be wrong. The new 2013 Ford Mustang, which will be on sale this spring, is among the most powerful Mustang ever with a jaw-dropping version that’s likely to be the talk in automotive circles for quite a while. The 2013 Mustang and Mustang GT will receive incremental upgrades this year over last, with the addition of a new hood, new lights in the front and track apps for the spry buyers who want to take their pony car to the track. The Mustang will be equipped with a standard V6 that can churn out over 300 horsepower and return 30 mpg, while the GT will benefit from an upgraded 5.0-liter V8 that now delivers 420 horsepower — up from 412 last year. The atom bomb engineers from Dearborn dropped last year was that the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 would crank out an eye-watering 650 horsepower with 600 pound-feet of torque. The super Shelby is positioned to compete against the Camaro ZL1 next year. Who says the muscle car wars have to be over?

Lexus :: GS There’s a new Lexus coming down the road, and the GS is at the front of the pack. The first in what the Toyotaowned automaker says will be nine new or significantly redesigned models in the next 18 months the new GS is a groundbreaking car for Lexus. Only 10 years ago, uttering the words “sporty” or “aggressive” while designing a Lexus would have been grounds for dismissal, now the company is living behind those tenets. The new 2012 Lexus GS is the first step in that direction. Redesigned from front to back the GS is an aggressive-looking sedan from the normally sedate automaker. From the “spindle” pinched grille in the front to high waist along the sides, the GS is Lexus’s attempt at regaining ground in the luxury segment. Targeting competition like BMW and Mercedes, the GS is a sportier approach that handles more like a German and less like a Lexus. The GS is powered by either a 3.5-liter V6 or a gas-hybrid engine combination and is offered in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations. For 2012, Lexus is also offering an F-Sport package that throws together aggressive style cues and active steering for the rear wheels. There’s no word of a GS-F in the works, yet. Although we do hear that the LF-A’s massive V10

Audi :: R8 Audi’s mid-engined supercar made news last year when Audi unleashed a super-tuned GT version last year. That version, staring at $196,800, combined Audi’s 5.2-liter V10 pulled from sister company Lamborghini and Audi’s prowess for overengineering everything and delivered blistering times and speed everywhere it went last year. Engineers deployed acres of carbon fiber everywhere and dialed in the already massive V10 to deliver 35 more horsepower to go with the Jenny Craig diet of lighter parts and stripped out interiors. The GT-less models still bring plenty of speed for 2012. The 4.2-liter V8 spins out 430 horsepower and 316 ft.-lbs. of torque and the 5.2-liter still delivers 525 horses and 391 ft.-lbs. of torque. That equates to brisk 0-60 times in just over 4 seconds and just under 4 seconds depending on the engine size. Audi also offers drop-top versions of both cars for a little more if open air is your preference. Neither model comes cheap as the car is easily into the six-figure range and can run up to $150,000 in a hurry. Little on the car will change from year to year, however it’s possible that Audi will introduce a speedier dual-clutch transmission gearbox in the 2013 R8 sometime this year. It’ll be hard to mess with the kind of perfection that the R8 offers and Audi’s flagship sports car should hold the crown as an engineering wonder well into the year and beyond.

Fisker :: Karma One of the most awaited alternative energy vehicles should be making its way to Utah soon. The 2012 Fisker Karma is an “extended range electric vehicle” with hybrid gaselectric motors. The dual 201 horsepower batteries are paired with a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that creates 260 horsepower. The combined effect is a fourdoor sedan that churns out over 400 horsepower with nearly 1,000 ft.-lbs. of torque. All that power comes at a price, however. The Fisker Karma will cost around $100,000 when it finally makes its way to showrooms this year, but will be eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit. Optional extras include a solar panel roof that can generate up to 200 miles of extended rang each year, 10.2-inch touchscreen entertainment system, reclaimed wood interior and EcoSuede seating materials. Of course, the car is meant to appeal not only to the environmentally aware but also to the guilt-free gearheads looking for a quick ride. The Fisker Karma boasts a 0-60 mph time in the 6 second range when engines are combined. On electric power alone, Fisker claims the Karma can run up to 60 mph in around 8 seconds. Fisker is counting on an electric future.
Dodge :: Challenger Even though this year may be the last for the Challenger to hold the crown as Chrysler’s fastest production car — the 2013 Viper should be coming soon — that doesn’t mean the Dodge Challenger will rest on its laurels. Last year the Dodge Challenger received Chrysler’s massive 392 cubic inch powerplant for SRT8 models along with incremental upgrades over the 2011 models. At its base though the Challenger is still potent with a 305-horsepower V6 as standard and 18-inch shoes. A 5.7-liter V8 is available for weekend warriors looking for a bigger bang and with $3,000 more to spend on the two-door coupe. Dodge’s re-entry to the pony car market has played second fiddle behind the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, and the future of the car is questionable. Rumors of a supercharger or some sort of ‘Cuda resurrection for Chrysler have Mopar fans drooling, but slumping sales and rising fleet MPG standards mean the Challenger may not have much longer. But it’s undeniable that the Dodge muscle car will be here for 2012, and by the looks of things, it’ll still smoke ‘em while it’s got ‘em.

Chevrolet :: Volt Fits and starts marked the Chevrolet Volt’s first year of existence in 2011. Salt Lake City didn’t see its models until well into 2011, although the groundbreaking electricfirst, gas-second has been around now for a couple years. The Volt was besieged in 2011 by bad press for what has been universally accepted to be a good car. The car’s range on electric alone has been more than adequate, and buyers’ stories of making a tank of gas last months in the Volt have been plentiful. The $40,000 sedan — that’s before any federal tax savings the car can qualify for, which is up to $7,500 — has plenty to be excited about as well. Modeled after the Chevrolet Cruze, the Volt is an exercise in General Motors’ new direction for quality interiors. Lightweight, soft touch materials are utilized throughout the Volt’s cabin and the car offers the latest and greatest in interior accessories. Two 7-inch touch screens are used inside to deliver entertainment and controls. Outside, the Volt looks like little more than just an ordinary sedan. Styling cues like a rounded and flush front fascia help the Volt cut through air easier, reducing drag and increasing overall mileage. The Volt has an interesting year ahead in 2012 as buyers warm to the idea of alternative fuel vehicles. To slightly adapt GM’s marketing slogan for the Volt’s tumultuous year, it wasn’t easy being the first.
Chevrolet :: Sonic Big things should be coming from this little car from Chevrolet. The successor to the fleetready Aveo, the Sonic has been earning praise as the smartest small car GM has built to date. And it’s a small car for sure. The subcompact frame only has a 100-inch wheelbase and is powered by a 1.8-liter busy inline four-cylinder engine or a 1.4-liter turbocharged four cylinder. The 138 horsepower both motors produce is plenty to haul its slender sub-3,000 lbs. of sheet metal around. Mileage estimates peg the Sonic into the high 30s for standard models and 40 mpg is possible in the eco-minded model with accompanying aero kit. Plenty of praise has been heaped on the Sonic so far, with critics admiring the materials GM has used and the lessons learned from the reasonably successful Cruze model. The Sonic comes in both 2- and 4-door variations with sedan and hatchback models available. In the compact segment, however, pricing is everything. Much like the Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit, the Sonic’s pricing originates sub-$15,000 — though not by much. The turbocharged versions should be hitting showroom floors later this year along with several revisions that will target the Sonic toward the youthful market Chevrolet is looking to capture. Keep a lookout for a hot hatch version of the Sonic RS due on sale in late 2012 that’ll be more tossable than morning hair.
Chevrolet :: Corvette The American icon returns this year as Chevrolet enters its second century of existence. Last year the Corvette refined its already impressive stance with bigger brakes and a more refined six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The top-end model, the ZR1, also made its way into sports car lore by bringing a thunderous 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that made more than 630 horsepower and more than 600 ft.-lbs. of torque. The ZR1 set records around the world, and completed a scorching lap at Germany’s famed Nurburgring in just over 7 minutes — one of the fastest times recorded by a production vehicle. The car is also the fastest car ever made by General Motors with a top speed of 205 mph. Chevrolet also introduced a Centennial Edition of the ZR1 for the 2012 model year that will celebrate the car’s heritage while looking forward to a monumental year for the car made in Bowling Green, Kentucky. As usual, General Motors is tight-lipped about what 2013 has to offer but there are a few tantalizing details. The all-new generation, dubbed C7, should arrive sometime in the fall and feature a completely redesigned body style. In past years, some insiders have theorized that the new Corvette could be mid-engined however that kind of break from tradition would be nearly unthinkable. What is possible — and perhaps likely — is that the new Corvette could drop two cylinders in some models and be some sort of forced-induction V6. Chevrolet too may turn focus inside and revamp the interior quite a bit, as critics have often said that the Corvette’s interior is behind its exterior and engine. No matter the change, it’ll be exciting to see what the next 100 years has in store for one of America’s greatest sports cars.
Chevrolet :: Camaro
This year the Camaro notched an important milestone in the car’s lengthy and storied resume: it outsold the Ford Mustang. The Camaro, longtime rival in the pony car wars with the Mustang, usually played second fiddle, but not last year. The super sleek Camaro did extremely well with potential buyers, as did the convertible version. Last year, Chevrolet introduced an insanely powered ZL1 Camaro with nearly 600 horsepower thanks to a supercharged 6.2-liter V8. This year the Camaro and Camaro Convertible should see incremental upgrades in horsepower and interior features, as the car isn’t likely to change much for the coming year. Chevrolet is also likely to introduce a drop top version of the uber-quick ZL1. Thanks to movies and good looks, the Camaro has gone from 0 to mega seller in only a couple short years. Chevrolet should be teasing what the future of this vehicle will be late in 2012 to keep fans drooling for years more.

Infiniti :: JX Infiniti is the latest luxury automaker to jump into the 7-passenger SUV fold. Behind other automakers like Audi, BMW and Mercedes, Infiniti announced last year their intentions to build a larger SUV based of the Nissan Pathfinder platform. Featuring a 3.5-liter V6 and CVT, the JX is likely to be super smooth on the road and off it with a long wheelbase with short body overhangs. Infiniti has said that the second and third rows of seating will have more legroom than a Cadillac Escalade, however, it’ll get significantly better gas mileage compared to the big SUV. The exterior reflects Infiniti’s “emotive” touch, with sweeping curves and an interestingly designed D-pillar and glass. The front of the JX will share similar features as the current FX range, however, from there the similarities end. Inside, the JX is as opulent as you’d expect from Infiniti. The cabin features a 15-speaker stereo system by Bose including an all-new subwoofer from the speaker maker. The car will appear for the first time as a model year 2013 later this year. Infiniti is hoping that more families will turn to smarter SUVs like the JX to accomplish what gargantuan SUVs used to only 5 years ago.
Nissan :: GT-R How do you improve on the car that has it all? Horsepower, of course. The 2013 Nissan GT-R ups the total kick this year to 545 horsepower, up from a meager 530 horsepower last year. Although, that figure could be lower as each GT-R’s twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 engine is still hand built in Nissan’s clean rooms. Early GT-Rs were pegged to have much higher horsepower ratings than Nissan anticipated. Nonetheless, the car is still capable of running from 0-60 mph in fewer than 4 seconds, and will likely accelerate at the same pace all the way up to its top speed around 195 mph. For this year, Nissan again tweaked the suspension and other fittings to maximize the car’s potential. A six-speed gearbox channels power from the engine to all four of the GT-R’s wheels through its sophisticated all-wheel drive system. Inside, the GT-R hasn’t changed much. Technically the car can seat up to four people, however it’s certainly not the car’s mandate. It’s unclear when the GT-R will see a significant revision, however it should be coming soon as the car is ending a traditional life cycle in the states and may see serious work in 2014.
Nissan :: Xterra Nearly unchanged outside since the nameplate’s debut in 2000, the Xterra puts to good use its long wheelbase of 106 inches with nearly 9 inches of ground clearance (more when equipped in Pro 4-X spec.) Off-roading types — you know, the people that consider Moab a divinely inspired challenge to their manhood — will appreciate the Xterra’s 30-some degree approach angle and nearly identical departure angle. Better chops can be had with different sets of rubber equipped, but that’s almost a given for people who’ve committed the location of Hell’s Backbone to memory. Outside the Xterra walks the walk too. Flared wheel arches, tall riding height and more rugged plastic than a Tupperware party complete the “watch this” look. Saying the Xterra is nimble on the freeway is a bit of a stretch, considering the SUV was built to succeed at 20 mph or less. But the ladder frame chassis and towering stature are mitigated through Nissan’s use of creature comforts like a Rockford Fosgate stereo and forgiving seats. Everyday use won’t require keeping a chiropractor on retainer anymore. Between the doors, the Xterra balances ergonomic with urban-warfare pretty nicely too. There are official nods to rugged use like wipe-down cargo mats and hooks aplenty, but there are also features like Bluetooth handsfree telephone and the aforementioned thump-tastic 300-watt stereo. Seating for five adults is easy and a 60/40-split rear folding backseat increases cargo volume to over 60 cubic feet, when hauling bikes, gear, canoes and general provisions for conquering the Louisiana Purchase.
Infiniti :: G series Two years after introducing the smaller engined G25, the Infiniti G series is back for 2012 with plenty to offer. The sedan, which shares a skeleton with the Nissan sports coupe 370Z is available in two very different engine sizes depending on your need for speed. The G25 sedan and coupe are powered by a 2.5-liter V6 while the G37 is powered by a much more potent 3.7-liter V6. The coupe version also comes in an insanely tuned IPL but it’s unclear how many of those we’ll actually see over the course of the G’s lifespan. One thing is for sure, any of the G range is handsomely equipped to fight in the uber-competitive small sedan market. The outside curves may be the most handsome of any within the segment and the thoughtfully appointed leather and accessories are nice all the same. Infiniti offers the G in either all-wheel or rear-wheel drive. It’s unclear what, if any, changes we’ll see in 2013. The G series won’t be due for a significant body restyling for several more years, so it’s likely that the range gets incremental upgrades this year. Early next year, though, we should be seeing a more significant update to the G range and should likely mimic the car that was shown by Infiniti in Geneva in 2011. That car, called the Essence, may even be powered by a Daimler engine and could even be called a Skyline, borrowing the name for a famous Nissan sold everywhere else. It’ll certainly be interesting to watch this time around.

Buick had a big year in 2011 and it’s looking to cars like the Regal to carry its success well into 2012. Three distinct engine options for the mid-sized luxury sedan should appeal to a wide swath of luxury buyers this year. Buick offers the Regal in an eco-friendly eAssist option with “light electrification” paired with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder model all the way up to a performanceminded GS that’ll sprint to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and six-speed manual transmission. The base model is still brisk with a 2.4-liter Ecotec engine that delivers 182 horsepower and up to 31 mpg. Tack on 18-inch wheels and a sporty exterior and the Regal isn’t exactly your grandfather’s Buick anymore. Buick is making strides this year to separate itself from domestic luxury competition with cars like the Regal and Verano. Exterior styling like low, aggressive intakes and a stylized rear end are giving the Buick a youthful touch without separating it too far from the class that has become synonymous with the Buick badge before. Inside the Regal is just as interesting. Dual-zone air conditioning, OnStar, leather, heated seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel come as standard for just over $26,000 base price. Optional equipment include a 336 watt, Harman/kardon nine-speaker stereo and chrome accents, and on the sporty GS model, 20-inch summer performance tires are available. Look for big things from Buick this year.
Buick :: Verano Buick’s first compact luxury entry landed in 2011 and was off quickly. Built to compete in a growing market dominated by imported luxury brands like Lexus, Audi and BMW. The Verano, based on the Chevrolet Cruze was unveiled last year at the North American International Auto Show and rolled off the production lines shortly thereafter. Powered by a 2.4-liter Ecotec inline four cylinder, the brisk Verano produces 180 horsepower in a car that weighs a little more than 1.5 tons. Outside the Verano adopts many of the same Buick styling cues found on the larger Regal and LaCrosse models. The wedge approach is well rounded around the Verano’s sides and retains its sharp qualities around a cutting front grille. Inside, well-appointed materials have been earning round praise from critics. The Verano continues the Buick tradition of seamless elegance with an absence of gaudy materials in favor of a tasteful, sophisticated interior. The Verano comes standard with 18-inch wheels, standard six-speed automatic transmission and 10 standard airbags among other features. Optioning the Verano up brings leather, heated seats and steering wheel, premium paint and premium stereo. Even with all that, the Verano has a hard time cracking $30,000 — the average price for a new car in America. Buick has smartly priced the Verano starting around $22,000 to compete with import competition and should make a compelling argument for those shoppers.
GMC :: Acadia Well known as a powerhouse when it comes to powerplants, GMC is also riding high from a successful year with an unlikely winner in their range. The GMC Acadia is entering its fifth year and sales are still strong — the Acadia posted a 12 percent gain in the first four months of 2011. Success on the lot hasn’t been a big surprise however, the 7-seater crossover has been a hit for buyers looking for versatility and practicality. Available in four trim levels: SL, SLE, SLT and Denali, the Acadia shares a similar platform as the Chevrolet Equinox, one of the most popular crossovers in the U.S. Both Equinox and Acadia are available in two- or all-wheel-drive and can be apportioned with everything from sunroofs to satellite radios. Powered by a 3.6-liter V6, the Acadia eschews capability without being brutish. The 288 horsepower is spun through a smooth six-speed automatic transmission that aims to maximize comfort and return on fuel economy. The EPA estimates peg the Acadia at 17/24 mpg for front-wheel drive models. On the inside, the Acadia makes all the right noises for families. A power lift gate, tri-zone automatic climate controls and rearview cameras are available as family-friendly options. Other amenities like leather-wrapped steering wheel, back seat entertainment system and 10-speaker Bose stereo are available options for interested buyers. All that starting at $32,000 means the Acadia could be popular for its sixth year running.

Last year GMC used only two words to describe their range of heavy duty pickup trucks: “Job ready.” That was mostly true as buyers flocked to GMC for their “job ready” pickups, breaking several sales records last year — including big gains in the summer months — and earning welldeserved hardware from PickupTrucks.com as the best overall HD truck last year. This year little will change for the pickup that earned heaping praise last year. The Sierra HD, and by extension the Silverado HD, still features a best-in-class towing capacity of over 11 tons, and a payload capacity of over 7,000 lbs. Offered in 10 Sierra 2500HD models, eight 3500HD models and six Denali models, the Sierra offers a wide range of convenience for interested buyers. Perhaps unexpectedly, GMC Sierra Denali models drove some of 2011’s sales success. According to GMC, the Denali editions appeal to buyers looking to equip long hauls with plenty of creature comforts. The Sierra HD range is offered in two different engine options, a 6.0-liter V8 or a 6.6-liter Duramax Diesel as optional. Two- and four-wheel-drive configurations are available as well as differing box lengths. GMC is also offering more standard equipment on its work truck series of Sierra HDs, such as cruise control and high-visibility mirrors. After all, GMC says their heavy duty range is job ready.

Subaru :: BRZ-STi Strangely, one of the most anticipated models will be coming from two automakers with very little to do with each other. The Scion FR-S, which will debut first this spring, is the first model from a Subaru/Toyota collaboration years in the making. Based entirely from a longtime concept, the Toyota FT-86, the car isn’t new to enthusiasts, but should still be enough to drool over. The front-engined, rear wheel drive sports car purportedly makes 200 horsepower and has a lower center of gravity than a Ferrari 458 Italia. Scion-parent company Toyota and Subaru haven’t disclosed how the two automakers will differentiate the two models from each other, but it’s widely believed that the Scion model may be the more affordable of the two, while the Subaru model could be more track-tuned. Pricing for both hasn’t been announced, but both should be somewhere below $30,000 with the Subaru being more expensive. Unofficial tests peg the 0-60 mph time around 7 seconds and the BRZ/FR-S should give the Mazda Miata a run for best pure sportscar experience under $30,000. Stay tuned.
Subaru :: Forester Don’t look now, but Subaru’s future may rest with models like the Impreza and Forester. The Forester has been a popular pick for crossover buyers who like the added confidence of all-wheel-drive along with the ability to haul plenty of gear. Last year, the 2012 Forester was the first model in Subaru’s range to receive the newly designed flat-four cylinder engine and the reception was largely positive. Efficiency for those models was up around 10 percent and those gains should increase as engineers look to maximize economy further in the new engine. This year should see minor improvements in the Forester with several changes to the interior and perhaps some new bodywork. The Forester’s 103-inch wheelbase is acutely adept at climbing mountain roads and handling snow and inclement weather, as are the 170-horsepower engine that comes standard and the optional 224-horsepower turbocharged variant. Looming in the background however is the Subaru XV crossover concept that was unveiled last year. The Impreza-based ute may not actually replace the Forester in Subaru’s lineup for the future, however the similarities to the Forester are undeniable.
2012 Utah International Automotive Expo
Utah’s state flag may as well have an Outback on it. Subaru has long been popular in the mountain states and northeastern states thanks to its symmetrical all-wheel drive system and prowess in the snow. The 2012 Outback didn’t stray much from the 2011 Outback aside from a few cosmetic upgrades and option package shuffling. Subaru still offers the Outback with two different engine options, a 2.5-liter four cylinder and a 3.6-liter six cylinder, both horizontally opposed. Subuaru’s famous symmetrical all-wheel-drive comes standard, as does the Outback’s enormous capability. The Outback features nearly 9 inches of ground clearance, the same as an SUV, and can go just about anywhere. The Outback benefitted a few years ago from the base Legacy’s improvements, including a longer, pushed back wheelbase and slightly elongated frame. Seating in the back seat is much more accommodating for adults, and families should have no problem replacing their SUV with an Outback. Subaru is tight-lipped about what’s in store for the Outback in 2013, but the smaller-displacement engine should be getting a universal upgrade like the other Subaru models have received, even at the loss of potential horsepower. Very little changes on the Outback from year-to-year and that’s a good thing: Outback buyers know the car is incredibly capable as-is.
Subaru :: Impreza The 2012 Subaru Impreza is all new this year and off to an impressive start. Completely redesigned from 2011, the Impreza features a new interior, powertrain and exterior to compete with entrylevel buyers looking for value from their sedans. Subaru made the all-wheeldrive Impreza lighter and smarter thanks to overall design and a lengthened wheelbase. The overall length of the car didn’t change much, however backseat passengers were given an extra few inches in the rear for better legroom. Under the hood, Subaru swapped a decade-old engine in favor of a more fuel-efficient flat four that gets up to 36 mpg when paired with its CVT transmission. The result is a markedly more efficient car — the long-time knock on Subarus was that they were too thirsty at the pump — and the payoff has been well received. Subaru acknowledged that it took a gamble with less horsepower but the effect driving is hardly noticeable. This year is the first model year of the redesigned Impreza, and 2013 should see small upgrades from the 2012 model year. The performance-minded WRX and STI didn’t change body styles, something that Subaru may change for 2013, however it’s unclear how those models will fit into the lineup with the introduction of the two-door coupe BRZ. As it stands, Subaru should win over mountain-state buyers looking for value and performance along with capability in adverse weather conditions.
“Thank you guys, I will definitely be back for another Subaru in the future.” – Georgi D.
