editor’s letter
Are you happy?
It’s not a frivolous question. According to Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage (happinessadvantage.com), we’ve long thought that happiness comes after success. If we could only get that promotion, that raise, that guy, we’d be happy, right? Not so much. In his book, Achor charts an entertaining course through research that shows success flows from happiness, not the other way around. And then he shares seven principles that you can apply to your own life — at work in particular, but equally to your non-work hours — to boost your happiness quotient. A dear friend gave me Achor’s book at virtually the same instant I declared to her that I wanted 2012 to be about happiness. Fate? Maybe. Or maybe, as a friend, she simply wanted my life to be filled with happiness. I’m definitely OK with that. So, this issue of HERS is all about passing along the happiness. From wearing the colour-infused styles of spring to baking sweet treats in the kitchen, we want every part of your life to make you happier. Because we know that life can be beyond challenging some days, we’re also telling the story of Shannon Bowen-Smed, who’s created untold hours of happy play for children in Calgary. And we’re sharing strategies to help you feel more powerful and, yes, happier. It’s our sincere hope that spring — and this magazine — will bring you plenty of opportunities to laugh and smile. To help with that, I have a challenge for you: for one week, ask yourself (and the people around you) what made you happy today. Let me know if it makes a difference for you: yjeffery@calgaryherald.com or 403-235-8658. Happy spring!

Splashing around
As temperatures rise, we’re heading into spring with styles that are fun and oh-so-wearable. Here’s what three (well, five) Calgarians are wearing. BY MELISSA LAMPMAN
Allyson Palaschuk
Pearl Tsang
Allyson Palaschuk is the president of Made by Momma, a charity that provides healthy food and care to mothers and young children; she’s also mom to four children ranging in age from seven months to 22 years. Since she’s always on the go, comfort and ease of wear are key for her fashion picks. This season, you’ll find Palaschuk in graphic-print rubber boots, likely with her youngest slung on her back in a funky carrier. “I throw him on my back and I’m done — I can go anywhere. That’s my mom thing, I wouldn’t really say it’s fashionable,” she jokes, adding that rubber boots are a spring staple. “I love those because . . . I’m always running around like a crazy person. I like something that’s easy to put on and take off.”
As CTV Morning Live’s traffic specialist and In Touch segments host, Pearl Tsang has her finger on the pulse of the city’s traffic and best community events. She also has a style that’s all her own. This spring, Tsang is wearing a brown leather Mackage biker jacket and her tried-and-true eelskin Jimmy Choos that she got for a steal in Paris. “It’s my go-to spring jacket since it goes with everything, from my jeans to a great spring dress, and I love the shoes because Calgary winters are harsh — I can’t wait to pull them out,” she says. Tsang’s scent for the season is the new Tom Ford perfume, Lavender Palm: “This is actually my husband’s. Once you put it on, you feel like you are standing in a spring garden.”
Trena Olfert
Trena Olfert knows how to help women be their best — she’s the owner of her own makeup artistry and skin care business, and CEO of the Calgary chapter of Dress for Success, which takes donations of business wear to help women who are re-entering the workforce. And she knows how to look great during the seasonal shift here. “My favourite right now that I love for both work and play is my Comfort & Joy black boots that I purchased from Browns this past winter,” Olfert says, adding she often pairs the boots with a little animalprint scarf. “I wear them dressed down or dressed up. And, because they are a wedge as opposed to a heel, I get some height, but can also trudge through slushy walkways. I love them!”

Shannon Bowen-Smed
On a spring day last year, Shannon Bowen-Smed watched as her two adopted daughters helped build a playground in memory of their big brother. It was a poignant snapshot in time. By Jamie Komarnicki
HERS PAGE 10

In 2000, Bowen-Smed was seven months pregnant when her baby, Scott, passed away at birth. The experience prompted Bowen-Smed and her husband, Peter Smed, to look at ways to give back to the community in memory of their special little boy. They decided on the annual Scott Smed golf tournament, which has raised $760,000 since its first tee-off. Along the way, it’s helped the Scott Smed Memorial Foundation fund private maternity ward family rooms in every Calgary hospital — a cause dear to Bowen-Smed’s heart. It’s also funded orphanages for babies in Kampala, Uganda, and helped open a medical centre there this year. The Foundation expanded to helping the Community Kitchen Program in Calgary — and then, last May, volunteers from Bowen Workforce Solutions, Boardwalk Rental Communities and Parks Foundation Calgary gathered in Albert Park to put together a colourful jungle gym for a playground there. Bowen-Smed’s daughters Elacy and Kira were given the task of digging post holes for the plaque honouring Scott — simultaneously connecting them to their brother and teaching an important lesson on the value of giving. “It was a really special experience,” Bowen-Smed says. For the 47-year-old Calgary businesswoman, community work has become a prominent part of her personal and professional life. Bowen-Smed is president and chief executive of Bowen Workforce Solutions, a workforce management company. She was 19 when she started at the $1-million a year, five-person agency as a receptionist and fell in love with the jobseekers she greeted at the door. Some were recent immigrants, others stayat-home parents looking to get back in the work force — all were ready to try something new. “I loved watching the transformation from walking in the door the first time to actually coming and collecting their first paycheque,” says Bowen-Smed. In May, she’ll have been at the company 28 years, including 16 years at its helm. During that time, the company has grown into a professional placement and contract management firm of 40 employees that generated $56 million in revenue last year. It’s not all work, though. “A big part of Bowen is giving back to the community,” she says. Last Christmas, for example, workers cooked and served a dinner and handed out presents at Sheriff King House. And they’ll be there when another playground is set to go up in Scott’s name later this year, says Bowen-Smed. “There is such joy in giving back.”

Replenish your makeup kit Try Quo Eye Shadow Trio. We tested Soft Alternative, a mix of ivory, pink and gold shades. For $15 at Shopper’s Drug Mart, it’s a perfect addition this spring. Inspired by the pinks and purples of spring flowers, Lise Watier’s Aquarella line features Rouge Gourmand lipstick. Billed as the No. 1 lipstick in Canada, it’s only $19.
Jimmy Choo’s Eau De Toilette is a clean, fresh scent made to take us from the office to the outdoors. It’s pears with ginger, orchids with rose and cedar, mysterious yet feminine. Available at stores across Calgary. — Colette Derworiz
Spring into summer Ah, spring — a time for renewal, including for our skin, says Celeste Hilling, founder and CEO of Skin Authority, a product line available at Murale stores. “Skin is incredibly dehydrated,” she says. “You want to exfoliate away those dead skin cells.” Hilling suggests the Resurfacing Accelerator. Its 15 per cent glycolic acid dissolves rather than scrubs away dead skin cells, offering a dual benefit: once the dead skin cells are gone, moisturizer will absorb better. She then suggests applying vitamins. That’s right, apply. Super-C Serum ($139), a topical gel, helps produce collagen and both “tightens and lifts” the skin. Then it’s time for spring cleaning — in our makeup bags. “People tend to collect things for years,” she says. “Nothing active is going to last a year.” So, throw out the products collecting dust under your sink and start anew. This year’s trend is natural so think neutrals: light shadows, a touch of mascara and a clear, even skin tone. — C.D.

Marlee Cheyanne Watts spotted a scene of New York’s two crossing bridges alongside hovering skyscrapers during a helicopter ride in the Big Apple. The native Calgarian, a fourth-year student at the Alberta College of Art and Design majoring in Jewelry and Metals, immediately saw its potential. She’s turned her photos from the ride into one of her most recent pieces, the Cityspace cuff ($300). To create it, the picture was printed on PNP blue, a special type of paper, which was then ironed onto a flat piece of metal. Afterwards, it was placed in an acid bath where the scene was etched out, and later placed in another chemical, Jack’s Black, to help create contrasting colours. Watts then shaped the metal into a beautiful cuff using various tools. “I had always had an interest in making and designing jewelry because of my fascination with body modification —tattoos and piercings,” she says. cover look We loved the look of Herringer Kiss Gallery the second we walked into their location at 709A 11th Ave. S.W. Clean lines and art that immediately spoke to us — not to mention the warm welcome from owner Deborah Herringer Kiss and her Italian greyhound Enzo. On the cover, our model Kiki is standing in front of art from Calgary’s own Lauren Walker. The striking circles of colour are created by a painstaking combination of natural wood grains and paper collages. Inside the magazine, the art background for models Kiki and Brittnee are lost photographs that have had their stories captured by another Calgary artist: Ken Webb. Although both Walker’s and Webb’s exhibitions ended in March, you can still contact them through the gallery. The idea of using our key photo shoot to uncover more of Calgary appealed to us a great deal. Brittnee is a born- and raised-Calgarian who says the city reminds her of a smaller version of New York. “I love the life here,” she says. “I’m constantly discovering new things to do: festivals, exhibitions….” Kiki, on the other hand, has made Calgary her home after coming out west from Toronto. She’s rediscovering the sport of show jumping, while confessing that she’s a big foodie. “I’m always trying out new restaurants,” says Kiki, who’s mom to a six-year-old daughter. For both, the city is offering plenty of exploring room. Models: Kiki Buttignol, courtesy of Sophia Models International (sophiamodels.com), on the cover and inside; and Brittnee Blair, inside. Styling: Karen Judge, Studio Gorgeous (studiogorgeous.com). Location: Herringer Kiss Gallery (herringerkissgallery.com). Hair & Makeup: Krista Ho Lem (kristaholem.com, courtesy of Sophia Models). On the cover: Judith & Charles blazer, $365, Free People blouse, $142, Lucy the First necklace, $34, Robert Rodriguez tank top, $95, and Rich & Skinny jeans, $150, all from Crabapple Clothing Company (3526 Garrison Gate S.W., 403-686-3661, crabappleclothing.com).
play with prints A flirty little frock is the perfect way to embrace the crazy prints that are everywhere this spring. Dress it up with a bold jacket, but keep things fun with chunky accessories and cool wedges. make a statement You really can’t go wrong with a simple shirtdress, and this beautiful shade of blue makes it right on trend for spring. After the short, dark days of winter, it often feels like spring can’t come soon enough. But until those first shoots of green push up from the brown earth and leaves begin to unfurl on trees, we have to find other ways to usher in a new season. Like eating things that at least taste like spring. The tangy tartness of lemon is perfect for that. It cleanses the palate after a winter of heavy, rich comfort foods and signals refreshed, greener times ahead. (Of course, some of us may eat lemon desserts throughout the winter as a way to pretend spring is closer than it actually is.) The bright flavour and sunshine-y colour of these Lemon Bars are the perfect antidote to a long winter; they’re packed with citrus and bolstered by a rich shortbread crust. With a dusting of icing sugar like the final snowfall of winter, they’ll taste like a spring awakening. STORY and photo by Gwendolyn Richards
LEMON LOVE
Lemon Bars Adapted from Ina Garten’s Barefoot Contessa Parties.
FOR THE CRUST 1/2 lb
(250g) unsalted butter at room temperature
1/2 cup (125 mL) granulated sugar 1/8 tsp (0.5 mL) salt 2 cups
(500 mL) all-purpose flour
FOR THE FI L L I N G 6
extra-large eggs at room temperature
3 cups (750 mL) granulated sugar 2 tbsp (25 mL) grated lemon zest (4 to 6 lemons) 1 cup
(250 mL) freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/8 tsp (0.5 mL) salt 1 cup
(250 mL) all-purpose flour
icing sugar for dusting
Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). For the crust, cream butter and sugar until light (either using a hand-held mixer or in the bowl of an electric mixer with the paddle attachment). Add salt and beat again, scraping down the sides. Add the flour and mix on low until just combined. Press into a 9x13x2-inch baking dish and let chill. Bake the crust for 15 to 20 minutes, until very lightly browned. Let cool on a wire rack. Leave the oven on. For the filling, whisk together the eggs, sugar, zest, juice and salt until well blended. Add the flour and mix until incorporated, but do not overmix. Pour over the crust and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the filling is set. Let cool to room temperature. Cut into squares or triangles and dust with icing sugar. Makes 20 squares or 40 triangles.
Wine pairings Rouge cellar manager and sommelier Scott Winograd has two wines and a liqueur to match with the buttery, rich shortbread and citrus tang of the lemon curd layer for these lemon bars. • Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut Riesling. Slashing the base of the vines just before harvest shoots sugar into the grapes, creating a fuller bodied wine with good acidity that plays nicely with a lemon and shortbread dessert. • Moscato. This sweet and sparkling style of wine is a good match thanks to its low alcohol and sweetness, and its tart finish. • Limoncello. What’s a better pairing for a lemon dessert than a lemon liqueur? Serve it chilled, shaken with a bit of ice, with chilled lemon bars, or at room temperature if the dessert has been sitting out.

Push Kings, Love Takes Flight A bouncy beat with great guitar, it’s hard not to start dancing around the kitchen to this one. The Jackson 5, ABC 123 A throwback here, but a fun, upbeat one with easy lyrics to sing along with. Katrina and the Waves, Walking on Sunshine Practically a gimme for this list. Nothing but brightness and sunshine here. Vivaldi, The Four Seasons — La Primavera (Spring) Light and bright, it’s like the sounds of green things bursting into bloom.

lacy temptations in paris There’s an embarrassment of intimate riches around every corner in Paris. The tantalizing aromas of sweet and savoury crepes waft from cafes; in the windows, pastel coloured macaroons beckon. But I was drawn through doors instead by the demi-brassieres, garters, bustier and nighties, artfully draped in the shop windows. My motto while in Paris echoes the bon mots of the lusty and indulgent Mae West: “I generally avoid temptation, unless I can’t resist it.” So there I found myself surrounded by pretty pastels, contrasting hues, whimsically romantic patterns, oh-sosheer fabrics and barely-there knits. I was smitten — and came home with a small kitty of what I like to call my ooh-la-la collection. Oddly, the shops were mostly empty, and I wondered: do French women really treat themselves to such frivolities? Well not everyone, surely. But many French women do take their under-things seriously. A friend confided to me that she had it on good authority, having done the laundry of an average family while working in Paris as an au pair in her mid-20s. She was titillated to find out while laundering — by hand only, of course — that she could, ahem, scarcely tell the difference between the children’s and mama’s delicates, so scant were they. French women may not indulge themselves frequently, my friend deduced, but when they do it’s a strategic retail therapy that is more about quality and flaunting their femininity than quantity. These, they reason, are items to treasure and derive great pleasure from for a long time. We, too, can make the layer next to our skin as provocative as we want, with creations in silks, satins, chiffons, buttery micro-fibres and cool cottons all finessed

You may have a tucked a tiny facsimile or two of the Eiffel Tower into your luggage after a trip to Paris. That’s nice. But save those generic souvenirs for your neighbour or your mom. Next time you’re in the city of light and lingerie, treat yourself to a beguiling bustier or a naughty nightie. By Lisa Monforton with delicate details and stitching. And Paris is synonymous with sexy lingerie, with dozens of shops. It’s impossible to list all of them here, but consider a visit to Sabbia Rosa (73, rue des SaintsPeres), a tiny shop that lives up to the hype and is a fave for such fashionistas as Madonna, Naomi Campbell and Catherine Deneuve. Personally, I enjoy seeking out little treasures by just ambling around the side streets until — voila! — another lingerie shop appears, like the retro and girlie Fifi Chachnil on Rue Saint-Honore or the flirty, youthful (and budget conscious) Princesse Tam Tam, which has several locations around Paris. The Galeries Lafayette and Printemps department stores devote yards and yards of space to flirtatious wear in a range of prices. And Cadolle, the cutting-edge and modern lingerie creator to stars and royalty, will even design a bespoke bra just for you, starting around 600 euros. Can’t get back to Paris right away to add to your delicates collection? At least one shop, Chantal Thomass, ships to North America. As for moi, I’d rather wait for the up-close and intimate shopping experience.

her ride
in the driver’s seat Besides buying a house, a car is probably the biggest investment you’ll ever make. But it’s hard to invest in anything if you don’t understand the language and, let’s face it, most of us don’t want to be gearheads. To help us avoid the lemons, three of Calgary’s top sales consultants steer us in the right direction. By Jody Robbins
stronger than they realize,” says Michelle Gordon, sales manager at Eastside Kia. One of the reasons? We’re willing to research what we don’t know. A good understanding of the basics — focusing on how you’ll use your vehicle —will ensure you’re not taken for a ride. “You don’t need to know what’s under the hood, but you do need to know how many people you want to fit and if you want all-wheel drive,” says Ashley Smith, a sales consultant for CMP Automotive. Do your research first to get a good idea of what you’re looking for, otherwise no one will take you seriously, she adds. The Internet is an easy place to start and consumer magazines are a good supplement. Despite thoroughly researching her last vehicle, Calgary mom Shauna Way has one regret. “I didn’t consider how my life might evolve in the years after buying it,” she admits. With the addition of two babies plus a pup, her Jeep Compass isn’t as functional as it once seemed. “Women need to buy the car that’s going work for them years down the road, not just for the next few months,” says Maria Arnould, product advisor at Canyon Creek Toyota.
Always ask: Before entering any dealership, you should have a list of vehicles you want to see and questions about them, says Arnould. “Ask a lot of your salesperson. If they want to earn your business, they need to answer your questions.” Most important, ask the salesperson why they are recommending a specific car and how it will meet your needs. Some women end up with the wrong car, “because they didn’t ask the right questions and allowed the dealer to direct them to something else,” explains Arnould.

What women want: “Women are
If you don’t understand how something works, ask to be shown. Feel like you’re being blown off? Don’t be afraid to ask for a new salesperson. “We’re here to help you, not belittle you,” says Smith. “You have every right to ask the hard questions,” Gordon says. “If (the salesperson) doesn’t answer the question, or skates around it, pack up and leave.”
Steer clear: Shop around and compare, noting how salespeople at different dealerships interact with you. Unfortunately, “the used car salesman mentality still exists to some degree,” admits Gordon. “Trust the person you’re purchasing from,” she says. “Never let anyone force you into a decision you don’t feel comfortable with. Follow your gut. If it says to go sleep on it, do it.” While some higher-end vehicles require a deposit for a test drive, don’t assume it’s needed. “That’s a ploy used to pressure you into buying, now that they have your money,” explains Smith. Women tend to stall when it comes to making the final decision. But if you go back to the same
dealership, looking at the same vehicle, they know they’ve got you; avoid tipping your hand too early.
Let’s make a deal: First, know your credit score. If it isn’t stellar, you won’t qualify for special interest rate deals. Your best bet is getting pre-approved before you’re at the dealer’s door, and then asking how they can beat the bank’s offer. For the best deals, keep in mind that pricing is more aggressive at the end of the month. “Dealerships and sales reps compete every month to be number one, and they’ll do what it takes to reach their goal,” says Smith, adding that you shouldn’t be afraid to negotiate and counteroffer. “Sometimes there’s room, sometimes there isn’t.” After you’ve set the price, go ahead and ask for extras such as tinted windows, all-season mats, or an automatic car starter. “It never hurts to ask,” says Arnould. And remember, everything looks great in a showroom. Just trust your instincts, says Gordon. “If they’re selling you a car with integrity, you should have no doubts.” n

Bring that fresh spring feeling indoors by livening up your living room. It’s as simple as adding some splashes of colour and a few accessories to reflect the changing season, say designers Jacqueline Corea and Reena Sotropa of Corea Sotropa Interior Design. “These splashes make the room come to life,” says Corea. Here’s how they breathed a bit of fresh air into Sotropa’s living room: Pillows: Throw pillows in spring green and coral replace those of darker colours used through the winter months. It’s a small change that can have a big impact on a space. Swap out the covers for a quick fix (and to save space on storage). And there’s no need to break the bank; some of the cushions are custom made, but others came from Chintz & Company and HomeSense. Corally-orange is a hot colour for 2012 and we’re seeing it in fashion, shoes and bags. A little splash adds charm to the living room. Sotropa and Corea balanced pillows of solid coral with coral designs and patterns of spring green. “Green and orange are like a tulip. They’re a classic combo,” says Corea. “The green softens the orange.” The pair pulled colours from the Persian carpet, which anchors the room year round. “It’s nice to have a foundation like that,” Corea adds. Add spring accessories: A little bird, an egg on legs and a mirrored tray refresh the room as they reflect the season. Choose items that speak to spring and think about pieces with reflective surfaces, like a mirrored tray or shiny vase. “Those things look fresher in the springtime,” says Corea. Even artwork that normally finds a place elsewhere in the home can add some zest to a spring-inspired room. Sotropa moved a painting into the living room for the season. “I move stuff around all the time,” she says. Let it bloom: Fresh flowers, like the tulips and hydrangeas used here, are a very quick way to add some colour and visual interest. It’s an efficient — not to mention inexpensive — way to brighten a room and signal a new season.

1. Become social media smart From status updates to tweeting and now pinning, staying abreast of the latest social media trends can be challenging. One thing’s for certain: this new way of interacting isn’t going away, says Kim Page Gluckie, social media consultant at Calgary’s MPowered Marketing. “Those who aren’t involved in one form of social media are now outside of a major cultural shift.” Where to start really depends on your purpose, say Page Gluckie. “All platforms do the same thing, but in a different way. Facebook is ideal if connecting with friends and family is your goal. Use Twitter to rally support from like-minded people. Pinterest is fabulous for people who love expressing themselves in pictures over words.” Workshops are available through Mount Royal University (mtroyal.ca) and for small business owners through iampte.com. Ultimately, social media is a hands-on experience and you’ll learn quickly by diving in.
2. Master a signature dish
about your style. Start by flipping through magazines or cruise the boards on Pinterest for inspiration. Ask friends whose style you admire where they get gorgeous. Once you have an idea of the styles you like, go to the pros. “Knowing what looks great on you and being able to search it out, makes all the difference,” says Megan Broderick, a local image consultant with M&You (mandyou.ca). Broderick helps women update their individual look with personal style consultations and wardrobe overhauls. Many malls and local boutiques can help, too, including Southcentre’s Perfect Fit Styling Program, which provides a free, 90-minute consultation with stylist Kim Flanagan. Or, saddle up to your favourite beauty bar and ask for advice about putting your best look together within your budget. Personal chef: Judy Wood recommends coming up with five safe standby meals that will keep you confident when entertaining.
When the thought of hosting a dinner party or pondering what’s for dinner sends you into a tizzy, garner a few go-to meals that can be fired up easily. “Five standbys, that can be interchanged and added to, make you a superstar and boost confidence,” says Judy Wood, chef and owner of Meez Fast Home Cuisine, which has several Calgary locations. Hone your skills by enrolling in a class. The Cookbook Co. (cookbookcooks.com) serves up culinary know-how from fast fish to rustic Italian, as does Meez (miseenplace. ca) in their Chef Skills Four Part Series. You can also get a dash of inspiration from friends by hosting an exchange where everyone brings their favourite dish and copies of the recipe. Add a pinch of the Food Network, salt liberally with cookbooks, and you’ll whip up a solid repertoire in no time.
Smart Mom. “Financials are one area women should keep on top of, regardless of what else they have going on,” she cautions. Build your worth by learning where your money is going and deciding where you want it to go. Start by going through all your paperwork, setting some goals and making a realistic plan, understanding that certain goals might require sacrifices now. Deveau also advises women to be easy on themselves and stop making comparisons with others. “We see someone’s luxury car, but not their credit rating,” she says. Chinook Learning Services (chinooklearningservices.com) offers personal investing and money management courses and websites such as goldengirlfinance.ca and gailvazoxlade.com help women make sense of money matters. After all, it’s your money, honey.
3. Manage your own finances
4. Put yourself together
Getting a handle on your finances needn’t be complicated or intimidating, yet many women are all too happy handing over the reins, says Sarah Deveau, author of Money
Think you have nothing to wear, despite a heaving closet? When you’re frustrated about how you look and don’t want to go out because of it, it’s time to get serious
5. Set boundaries Learning how to say no gracefully can be as hard for many women as accepting a compliment. Instead of resenting what you’ve committed to, think first about the consequences of saying yes. Kim Busch, a registered psychologist at Calgary Counselling Centre, advises clients to question what you become involved in and your motivation for doing so. Busch defines boundaries as the art of knowing what to let in and what to keep out. “Learning your limits before getting caught up in small events (like baking two dozen cupcakes for the school when your schedule is already packed) is just as important as bigger issues, like being taken advantage of.” So, how can permanent pushovers begin asserting themselves? It’s all about starting small and building from there, says Busch. “Unfortunately, women need to be ready for push-back, as people may not believe you at first. Once you demonstrate you’re serious about your limits, others will start respecting them.” n Jody Robbins is a Calgary-based freelance lifestyles and travel writer. Twitter.com/jody_robbins

Key lime pie
Avocado facts
Looking for a recipe for avocados? Julie Daniluk, holistic nutritionist and co-host of Healthy Gourmet, puts them to use in a key lime pie in her new cookbook, Meals That Heal. Avocados are packed with vitamin B6, which helps the liver metabolize and balance hormones like estrogen. For that reason, she calls this piece the “perfect nonchocolate rescue for PMS.”
How about adding a little green to your diet? Avocado green, that is. Avocados got a bad rap during the fat-phobic 1980s. But now, this fruit (yes, it’s a fruit) is making a comeback, thanks to its high levels of healthy monounsaturated fats — which can improve blood cholesterol levels and decrease your risk for heart disease.

Avocados are also known as alligator pears. The healthy fats found in avocado and avocado oil help the body absorb nutrients found in vegetables. Avocados are a good source of lutein, an antioxidant that may protect vision. They’re chock full of fibre. To ripen an avocado, store it in a paper bag at room temperature for two or three days. Avocados freeze well. First, wash, seed and peel the fruit. Puree the flesh, adding one tablespoon of lemon juice for every two pureed avocados. Store the puree in an airtight container. Freeze and use within four to five months.
1 cup
(250 mL) unsweetened shredded coconut
1 cup
(250 mL) walnuts
¼ tsp (1 mL) grey sea salt or pink rock salt ½ cup (125 mL) pitted Medjool dates
3 1 tsp
firm avocados (5 mL) lime zest
½ cup (125 mL) raw honey pinch

Process the coconut, walnuts and salt in a food processor until coarsely ground. Add the dates and process until the mixture resembles bread crumbs and begins to clump together. Press into the bottom and sides of a 9-inch (23 cm) pie plate using the back of a spoon or your fingers. Place the crust in the freezer for 15 minutes. Process all the filling ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Pour the filling in to the piecrust. Set in fridge for 20 minutes. Garnish with fresh slices of kiwi fruit or thin slices of lime. Makes 8 servings

Vaccinations
Spring gear guide
You watch your diet, exercise regularly and floss daily. But if your immunizations aren’t up-to-date, you are putting yourself at risk for serious disease. A recent report in Canadian Family Physician shows that Canadian adults are under-immunized. “As we’ve all heard from our grandmothers, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Realistically, we have vaccines that can prevent cancers as well as vaccines that can prevent infections, and we should be doing a better job of using them.” says Vivien Brown, a family physician in Toronto and author of the report.
Ghost Miss AMR 5700 Bicycle: Ride in comfort on a Germanengineered Ghost Bike, which just arrived in Canada this spring. The Ghost Miss AMR is designed specifically for women. Available at Mountain Equipment Co-op, $2,000.
• Check that your tetanus shot is up to date. Adults need a tetanus-diphtheria booster every 10 years. • Make sure that you’ve been vaccinated against hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Canadian children now receive the hepatitis B shot through school. But unless they have specifically asked for the vaccination, women in their mid-30s and older probably aren’t immunized. She recommends that women who are 35 and older and are separating from long-time partners get immunized against hepatitis B and C. If you don’t know if you’ve been vaccinated, ask for an antibody blood test. • Consider the HPV vaccine. The vaccine is approved in Canada for women aged nine to 45, and men aged nine to 26. Brown recommends every young woman get the HPV vaccine before they are sexually active or have exposure. Older women in long-term monogamous relations don’t need the vaccine. “But if a women is just getting divorced and going to be exposed to new partners, then absolutely she should get it.”

A fish tale Do your heart a favour and start eating fish while you’re young, researchers report in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association. In a study of women of childbearing age, women who rarely or never ate fish had 50 per cent more cardiovascular problems over eight years than those who ate fish regularly. The study was based on an analysis of nearly 49,000 Danish women between the ages of 15 and 49. The women were interviewed about lifestyle and family history, as well as how much and how often they ate fish, and which types. “The biggest challenge in getting health messages like this across to young populations is that usually the benefits may not be evident for 30 or 40 years, but our study shows this is not the case. We saw a strong association with cardiovascular disease in women who were still in their late 30s,” says lead author Marin Strom of the Centre for Fetal Programming at Statens Serum Institute in Denmark. Researchers say women should eat fish as a main meal at least twice a week to obtain the greatest benefit from fish and fish oils. Fish oil contains long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are believed to protect against heart and vascular disease.

“If you’re constantly giving out, giving out, giving out, it depresses your system physically, mentally and emotionally,” she explains. Obviously, giving back to yourself doesn’t mean neglecting the needs of those who rely on you, but Burns says people should do at least one thing they consider fun or enjoyable each day. This can mean going for a swim and getting a massage, or
“It would have been lovely to put myself to bed for two weeks and just moaned and really immersed myself in the sadness, but I had to keep moving and I had to keep going.” Barbara Blakey it can be something as simple as enjoying that morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of red wine. “It’s about really connecting with the things that give back to you,” says Burns. “I’m addicted to Starbucks coffee, so that’s my moment when I feel like I’m giving back to myself. Everything is okay in moderation. It’s just about making sure you’re doing it in small amounts. . . . It’s about taking those little moments.” Creating more joy in your life can often feel like a selfish pursuit, but yoga instructor Jessica Dollard insists a little selfishness can be a good thing. As director of Calgary’s Fairy Tales International Queer Film Festival for two-and-a-half years, Dollard focused her energies on supporting other artists, yet failed to recognize her
own talents. “I was afraid to admit to myself that I had a lot to offer,” she recalls. Dollard quit her post at the festival last year, became a certified yoga instructor and recently founded Project Scatter Joy, an organization that will help other people find their bliss. She says one major component of happiness that is often overlooked is the idea of “play.” “What is play to you?” she asks. “A lot of people who are into sports can say their favourite sport, but a large part of the population doesn’t really know what to say. Or they might say, ‘watching TV.’ “There’s nothing wrong with watching TV, but I think people should really think what play means to them. What does play feel like? And how can you bring more play into your life? People lose touch with play and losing touch with play is ultimately starting to lose touch with bliss.” Happiness can mean different things to different people. For some, having a pet or working with animals is pure joy, while others find calm and fulfillment in gardening. Burns suggests writing out a list of activities and interests that might appeal to you, and then trying them out. She also stresses the importance of a strong social network and the support of family and friends. Still, adding joy and happiness to your life isn’t an easy task, so don’t be discouraged if you aren’t always feeling like a glowing beacon of positivity. Acknowledging negative feelings such as stress, anger and sadness is important, but the trick is to not allow those emotions to overwhelm you. “You have to say, ‘Okay, I’m having a bad day. It will pass, so what do I need to do now to take care of myself?’” says Burns. “It’s a balance with everything. We have to inhale and exhale. We have to manage our emotions by expressing negativity, but also leaving room for bigger feelings like joy and happiness.” n

hen Barbara Blakey’s 17-year relationship collapsed unexpectedly one year ago, she had two choices: wallow in sadness or find the strength and motivation to move on. With two young children and a successful Irish dance company to run, however, hiding under the covers was no option. As emotionally devastating as the sudden end of her marriage was, Blakey knew she had to feel joy again for the sake of her kids and business. “It was almost like being hit by a car and having to learn to walk again, and putting myself back together in a new context,” Blakey says. “It would have been lovely to put myself to bed for two weeks and just moaned and really immersed myself in the sadness, but I had to keep moving and I had to keep going.” After the initial shock of the split subsided, Blakey began the lengthy healing process. She started eating better, sleeping seven hours a night and working out again, getting the energy boost she needed to deal with her busy life. And, she rediscovered an old love when she picked up her longneglected camera. “I realized I had extra time so I refocused my energies,” says Blakey, who gave herself photo projects to complete and has already exhibited her work at various businesses around Calgary. “Going out shooting and enjoying it again brought back a passion I had been missing out on.” Blakey’s story isn’t unique, but many women don’t bounce back from similarly difficult periods in their lives as quickly as she did. By taking care of herself physically and reigniting a passion, she took the right steps toward filling her life with gladness. Tessa Burns, a registered psychologist and owner of Serenity Now Wellness Centre, says women tend to focus on meeting the demands of others at the expense of satisfying their own needs.

spa
a taste of egypt a touch of heaven Travel the world with Calgary’s spas. By Michelle Magnan I’d had enough. The routine was getting to me, so I decided to book a much-needed escape to somewhere exotic and luxurious: Egypt. However, instead of jumping on a flight, I travelled roughly 20 blocks to Oasis Wellness Centre & Spa, which is tucked away on the lower level of Mount Royal Village. In October, Oasis won the Calgary Herald 2011-2012 Readers’ Choice Award for top spa and, judging by my recent adventure there, it’s easy to see why. With its domed entryway, a “queen’s chamber” for a changing room and hieroglyphs on the walls, stepping into Oasis is like taking a trip to the other side of the world — with a hefty dose of luxury thrown into the mix. A facial and a 90-minute massage were on my Egyptian agenda that night. My esthetician, a chatty woman named Maritza Restrepo, gave me the 65-minute Teye Advanced Facial ($138), along with all kinds of tips on how to keep a clear complexion. Aside from exfoliating twice a week, Restrepo says the key is to rinse your face with cold water immediately after washing with warm water to help close and protect pores. After that, massage therapist Jeff Mysyk delivered pure muscle magic during a 90-minute therapeutic treatment ($148). Best. Leg. Massage. Ever. Finally, just before leaving, the girls offered me a makeup touch-up, which comes standard with any facial. My response: “No, thanks. I’m blissed

It is important that before you choose a laser hair centre, you consider the following… • Medial Grade Equipment vs. Spa/Beauty Grade equipment. This is a common misunderstanding. Medical machines give the highest quality of results with the least amount of treatments. Medical machines possess true laser to treat deep into the hair follicles – and hence, the most effective results. • Trained technicians. It is important to work with a technician trained in laser technology. You need to trust that safety is number one. The Laser Hair Centre Inc. uses state-of-the-art Diode “LightSheer” technology for hair removal treatments. “LightSheer” hair removal lasers are high powered pulsed Diode array systems that are able to provide permanent hair reduction. The “LightSheer” has a special sapphire contact-cooling tip that protects the skin, while bringing the laser energy safely through the skin to the hair root. The distinctive blending of features allows the treatment of patients of all skin types with uncompromising safety and efficacy.
Hair Growth Stages
Hair’s active growth phase is called anagen. During this stage, the hair is highly pigmented. The laser treats hair during this stage most effectively. Catagen is the regression phase of hair growth. The hair is still present, but the bulb of the hair stops growing and the follicle degenerates due to the collapse of the papilla, which feeds the hair. Telogen is the stage where the hair is shed and the follicle rests until stimulated to begin a new growing cycle
How Lasers Work
Lasers work by producing a precise beam of light. The color of the light determines what that particular las er affects. The Diode Laser works by seeking out the pigment found in the hair follicle. Laser treats hair most effectively in the active anagen growing stage, because of this, more than one treatment is required.. The length of the laser sessions may be a few seconds to a few hours, depending on the area being treated. The sensation on the skin varies in intensity according to the density and coarseness of the hair. The more hair that is present, the hotter the sensation. In some cases, topical freezing cream may be recommended.
Recovery
Although the appearance of the treated area varies, redness and swelling around the area treated is the most common reaction and usually subsides within 20 minutes to 2 hours. Most patients return to normal activity right away.

Get away at home So, if a trip to somewhere exotic isn’t the cards and neither is a trip to the spa, don’t think you’re doomed to boredom here in Calgary. According to Peter Smed, president of Oasis Wellness Centre & Spa, creating a new and meaningful experience is as simple as this: break your everyday routine. “I believe the biggest deterrent to our wellness and growth is routine,” he says. “Routines are killer.” Smed says to avoid the sameness trap, he doesn’t drive to work the same way two days in a row. And though he loves coffee from Starbucks, he makes a point to visit different cafes throughout the week. “It makes it interesting and sort of keeps me engaged. I don’t feel like I’m getting on the treadmill of life every day. That’s what breaking out of our routines can do.” Which is why he advises everyone to shake things up once in a while. Take a walk through an unknown neighbourhood with your children or your partner. Head to the mountains. Run a luxurious bath with scented candles nearby. Anything that gets you out of your everyday routine will be refreshing, which is the whole reason Oasis is a themed spa — it creates an opportunity to have a unique experience. And isn’t that what a getaway is all about? n — M.M. HERS PAGE 44

BRITA THOMAS: We spotted Brita Thomas at Herringer Kiss Gallery during our HERS photo shoot and were quite taken with her cool and quirky style. An artist herself, Thomas has a great eye for detail and prefers to shop around for fun and unusual fashion pieces rather than brand names. Dresses and heels are her go-to outfit for work at the gallery and she’s generally drawn to feminine, retroinspired styles like this print dress from Anthropologie. “I definitely look for something that works for me and is a bit unique,” says Thomas. “I like the fuller skirts and fitted waists, and I’ve discovered over time that’s what is most flattering on me.” She also likes a juxtaposition of feminine, retro pieces and edgy, modern styles, which is why she’s added the structured Free People jacket to this outfit. Though she describes her overall style as fairly eclectic and says she’s just as comfortable in more casual styles in her offwork hours, you likely won’t see Thomas schlepping around town in sweat pants. “I would always rather be a little overdressed than underdressed,” she says.
