Cosette Justo Valdés Conductor Cosette Justo Valdés is a Cuban-born and raised conductor. A daughter of amateur musicians, she began piano and music theory at age eight. At 18, she saw her first symphony orchestra and immediately wanted to be a conductor. She graduated from the National Institute of the Arts of Cuba, in Havana, in 2009 with a degree in orchestral conducting, and was appointed Music and Artistic Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Oriente (OSO) in Santiago, Cuba. In 2012, Valdés was admitted to Mannheim Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst (State University for Music and Performing Arts) in Germany, earning her master’s degree in 2018. In Europe she conducted several orchestral, choral, and chamber ensembles, while continuing her role at OSO in Cuba. In 2019, Valdés started as Assistant Conductor and Community Ambassador of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, where she conducts different ensembles and styles of music. She also conducted the iMusici de Montréal in 2021, and this Season she appears with the Calgary Philharmonic, Edmonton Opera, Rockford Symphony Orchestra in the U.S., and several orchestras in Cuba.
5 things about Hollywood film music 1. M etro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced numerous movie musicals throughout the 1900s, including Wizard of Oz (1939), Strike Up the Band (1940), Lady Be Good (1941), and Singin’ in the Rain (1952). The score for La La Land (2016), a musical about Hollywood, was recorded in the same studio as many popular MGM musicals. 2. C ity of Stars from the film La La Land won an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2017. No hand double or CGI was used for actor Ryan Gosling on piano — he spent hours learning how to play the music from memory. 3. T his November marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast — it was the first animated film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture (it lost that, but won for Best Original Score), and the first to have a princess with brown hair. 4. S ingin’ in the Rain was not an instant hit when it debuted onscreen in 1952, but has since become regarded as one of the best musicals of all time — it’s ranked No. 1 on the American Film Institute’s Greatest Movie Musicals list. 5. C lassic FM credits Leonard Bernstein with “revolutionizing” musicals by treating West Side Story much like an opera. The film version won 10 Oscars in 1961, including Best Picture. A new version of the film is scheduled to be released this December.
