YOUR PHIL. YOUR MUSIC.
We acknowledge that we come together and create music on land known by the Blackfoot name Moh-kíns-tsis, which we also call Calgary. This land is on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), the Stoney Nakoda (Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations), and the Tsuut’ina First Nations, as well as the Métis Nation of Alberta, Districts 5 and 6. We honour this land and all those who share it in a spirit of peace, friendship, and respect.
Programs and artists subject to change without notice
After eight incredible seasons of music with you, the 2024/2025 Season marks my final one as Music Director with your Calgary Phil. While programming this Season, I enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on the past and joyfully revisit some of the wonderful memories we made together here in Calgary. It’s been a journey filled with both excitement and challenges, navigating transitions in our world and organization, especially amidst the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic years. Yet, we’ve persevered admirably, emerging stronger and more resilient for the love of music in this city.
In a rapidly changing world, a vibrant city like Calgary needs a vibrant orchestra. The whole world is changing very fast, and we must not lose sight of our place in it — we know what we create can be transformational — we must continue the important work of remaining relevant and meaningful to our community, adapting to the evolving needs and dynamics of the communities we serve.
It’s why it brings me great pride to present to you the 2024/2025 Season, a season rich in offerings and pulsating in musical virtuosity — it’s a culmination of what we have built these past years together and provides the foundation for what is to come for this remarkable city and brilliant Orchestra.
This year, we open with the spectacle of Carmina Burana alongside the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus and a lineup of remarkable soloists. Further along the season, we welcome exceptional guest artists from Yo-Yo Ma and James Ehnes to Pop and Singer-Songwriter sensations Kiesza and Chantal Kreviazuk. We are also eagerly looking forward to new music from Cris Derksen and the return of an audience-favourite dual-birthday party marking both my birthday and Mozart’s in Mozart’s Birthday Party featuring the composer’s Prague Symphony and Mass in C Major. Plus, we keep the party going in celebration of Anton Bruckner’s 200 year anniversary with one of the most beautiful symphonies ever written, his Eighth Symphony.
Cozy holiday favourites return in the form of choral splendour. Also returning are our ever-popular Symphony Sundays for Kids and Education Shows — many of which sold out last season! This season we pay special tribute to music legends including Tina Turner, Nirvana, ABBA, Drake, and a special orchestral show honouring Bob Marley’s 80th birthday, co-produced with Arts Commons and Jones & Jones Productions.
One of the most cherished memories during my tenure in Calgary was experiencing Mahler’s Second Symphony. It feels fitting to conclude my time here with such profoundly meaningful music. Mahler holds a special place in my heart, and I look forward to sharing this beautiful evening with my colleagues and our supportive audience.
Lastly, I thank you for the immense privilege you’ve given me in leading your Phil. It’s an honour and responsibility I took with great pride. As we embark on this final chapter together, I hope more than ever, you feel this is your Phil for Calgary. Thank you for being a part of our journey, I can’t wait to experience this unforgettable season with you.

Bask in the sounds of your Calgary Phil in this concert of grace and warmth led by Canadian conductor
Naomi Woo. She brings English composer Ruth Gipps’s vivid Second Symphony to life, complemented by Vaughan Williams’s haunting pastoral romance The Lark Ascending, performed by violinist Anna Stube, this season’s MacLachlan/Ridge Emerging Artist. Franz Schubert’s Fifth Symphony opens the evening with infectious good cheer.
Schubert Symphony No. 5
Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending Gipps Symphony No. 2
The battle for the galaxy intensifies in this thrilling fifth episode of the Star Wars saga. Imperial Forces attack the Rebel Alliance, and Luke Skywalker learns the ways of the force from Jedi Master Yoda as he prepares to face Darth Vader. Experience the original film on the big screen like never before as the Calgary Philharmonic and conductor Julian Pellicano perform John Williams’ grand score live.
It’s a special thrill when Yo-Yo Ma appears with your Calgary Phil! Don’t miss your chance to see the distinguished cellist perform one of the cherished works of the repertoire, interpreted with his inimitable flair, dignity, and eloquence. Music Director Rune Bergmann then conducts the Orchestra in music by his fellow countryman Edvard Grieg: beloved selections from the composer’s Peer Gynt Suites filled with his signature melodic charm.
JoAnn Falletta draws out all the colours of the orchestra in this concert of French music, including Jacques Ibert’s vivid musical postcards of Mediterranean locales, Lili Boulanger’s dreamy tone poem, and Claude Debussy’s vibrant triptych depicting his “old friend, the sea … always endless and beautiful.”
Jean-Willy Kunz joins the Orchestra on the Jack Singer Concert Hall’s mighty Carthy organ for Francis Poulenc’s Organ Concerto.

Along the way he finds help and inspiration from a loyal dog named Bella and the great Michelangelo himself.
DreamWorks’ How To Train Your Dragon is a captivating and original story about a young Viking named Hiccup, who defies tradition when he befriends one of his deadliest foes — a ferocious dragon he calls Toothless. Together, these unlikely heroes must fight against all odds to save both their worlds. Featuring John Powell’s Oscar-nominated score performed live to picture, this concert is a thrilling experience for all ages!
Musical sensation Ashley Brown, who originated the title role of Mary Poppins on Broadway, brings her golden voice to the Jack Singer Concert Hall! Waltz with her and the Calgary Phil through the wonderful worlds of Disney and Broadway’s hit musicals, with favourites including A Spoonful of Sugar, Defying Gravity, and Children Will Listen, mixed in with popular standards from the Great American Songbook.

Enrich your Orchestral Experience
University of Calgary Continuing Education Course
Ever wondered how an orchestra operates, or the story behind the music you hear at a Calgary Phil concert? Since the 1990s, we’ve offered a continuing education course through University of Calgary covering orchestral repertoire in a combined classroom and concert experience. Through listening, lecture, discussion, guest musicians, and attendance at select Calgary Philharmonic concerts, empower your curiosity and explore the world of orchestral music in a relaxed and fun environment. Each session features a deep dive into an orchestral masterpiece, whether an epic symphony, a virtuosic concerto, or jazzy takes on classical favourites.
Pre-concert Chats
Many of our performances offer a pre-concert chat. These 30 minute pre-show chats are an opportunity for audience members to learn more about the music being performed from the artists themselves! Pre-concert chats are interview style discussions with orchestra members, guest artists, and conductors. You can find out if your performance has an included pre-concert chat on the event page at calgaryphil.com or in the ‘know before you go’ email you’ll receive prior to your concert. Don’t forget to arrive early— pre-concert chats start an hour before the concert.
Open Rehearsals
Experience a full working concert rehearsal! Seniors and students are invited to join us in the Jack Singer Concert Hall for a behind-the-scenes experience at a full working Open Rehearsal to discover the time and dedication it takes to prepare for a performance. This unique opportunity is available for select concerts throughout the season. Tickets are $15 each — be sure to register ahead of time as space is limited. See page 27 for a list of concerts with an Open Rehearsal.
Instrument Discovery Zoo
Don’t miss the Instrument Discovery Zoo before every Symphony Sundays for Kids concert! Kids can meet musicians, try out string and percussion instruments, compose a tune and have it played by a musician, or visit one of the creativity stations.
