Under Dr. Curdt’s guidance, the Section aims to enhance professional development opportunities for PGA Members, expand outreach initiatives to underserved communities, and promote diversity both on and off the course. Her background as a trailblazer in the golf world uniquely positions her to address these goals. As one of only a few women to achieve the PGA Master Professional designation, she has consistently broken barriers throughout her career.

In addition to her professional achievements, Dr. Curdt is also a renowned advocate for mental health in sports. She holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, which she integrates into her teaching philosophy to help players achieve peak performance both physically and mentally. Her holistic approach to instruction has earned her widespread acclaim and numerous accolades, making her a role model for golf professionals and players alike.

Her leadership promises to bring fresh perspectives and transformative initiatives that will benefit SCPGA Members, players, and the broader golfing community. Dr. Alison Curdt is poised to leave an indelible mark on the SCPGA and the game of golf during her term.

TGL Golf Course Designer Agustin Pizá

TGL presented by SoFi is an innovative golf league, created by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Mike McCarley of TMRW Sports which combine cutting-edge technology with teams of top PGA TOUR players for weekly two-hour prime time matches.

Pizá, the founder and principal golf course architect at Pizá Golf, was selected to design a series of golf holes for the first season of the fastpaced, prime time, team golf league. He joined Nicklaus Design and Beau Welling who collectively designed 30 golf holes.

Pizá, acclaimed internationally and the recipient of numerous awards, has established a distinguished reputation for “Re-defining Golf Facilities” through his innovative design concepts such as Wellness Golf®, Multipurpose Golf, and Butterfly Golf®. His creative prowess has been acknowledged by Forbes Magazine, which has twice named him among the top one hundred inventive minds from Mexico. All which contributed to his TGL appointment.

“It was exciting to be chosen to design a collection of holes for TGL.

The opportunity to create thoughtprovoking and unique golf holes for this innovative league was and is truly an honor,” commented Pizá. “Starting with a blank canvas presented an exhilarating challenge, free from the constraints of surrounding landscapes or natural elements, which allowed pure creativity to drive the design process.”

To create extraordinary designs, Piza needed to connect with his inner child and then apply expertise as a designer. “One of the things that came to was, how can we create something extraordinary, something wild, something completely unconventional, yet still honor the integrity of the game,” Pizá explained enthusiastically.

The first week of TGL showcased

THE PLANK

STRATEGIES FROM PIZÁ

“For The Plank, we wanted to design something simple but also something that required you to think through your shots. To achieve this, we positioned the bunkers to create several dynamic diagonal lines across the hole,” shared Pizá.

“For Pick Yer Plunder, a 590 yard par 5. The whole idea is you can take that middle section, and you will be rewarded. You will only have a 200 yard shot at the GreenZone to get on in two,” added Pizá.

Award-winning architect Agustin Pizá has earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from ITESM and a Master’s Degree in Golf Course Architecture from the Edinburgh University in Scotland. He is a proud member of both the European

Pizá and his creativity and imagination with The Flex, which featured a green surrounded by molten lava., you heard that! “I am 110% responsible for that lava in the The Flex,” Pizá said. “All of a sudden you think volcano! I dreamt, I dreamt of it after I got the call from TGL.”

The TGL matches are providing Pizá an amplified and a new kind of visibility. The first two holes in the second match were also his. The Plank and Pick Yer Plunder.

Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA) and the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA).

For 26 years, Pizá has worked on world class golf developments. His designs are known for delivering quality, aesthetic, and strategic golf courses. He and his design team have worked and have been involved in more than seventy projects on three continents.

TRILOGY GOLF CLUB AT LA QUINTA A MUST-PLAY ONCE AGAIN

Onceamong the most-celebrated public golf courses in the Coachella Valley, Trilogy Golf Club at La Quinta, host of the legendary Skins Game from 2003 to 2006, is open once again, and better than ever.

Earlier this year, the residents of Trilogy at La Quinta voted overwhelmingly to purchase the 229-acre golf course, clubhouse and restaurant. Soon after, they launched a sweeping, multi-million-dollar renovation campaign to modernize the facilities and return the club to its former glory. Trilogy Golf Club at La Quinta reopened to public play December 16th, and the results are spectacular.

“We’ve been dreaming of this day for a long time,” said Mark Reider, president of the TLQMA board of directors. “The homeowners, along with everyone involved in the club’s restoration, have poured their hearts into this project, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the result. This is truly a special golf club, and we can’t wait to share it with our neighbors and golf travelers from around the world.”

At its former peak, Trilogy Golf Club at La Quinta attracted the game’s big-

gest stars, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, and Annika Sorenstam. However, the club fell on hard times after an ownership change, closing in 2022. But that’s all in the past. With Trilogy residents in charge and the club under new management, there’s no doubt Trilogy Golf Club at La Quinta will reclaim its must-play status in the Coachella Valley.

The renovation was overseen by architect Gary Brawley, who was part of Gary Panks’ original design team. Under his direction several bunkers were reshaped, and the bunker noses were lowered to enhance playability. All bunkers were completely rebuilt with new drainage and a new 50/50 blend of Emerald sand. All the greens were re-grassed, and the collars were resodded. Extensive work was done to the irrigation system throughout the course to ensure players of exceptional conditions. As a final surprise, the club restored the “Skins Tees,” allowing players the ability to experience the course the way Tiger, Phil, and the other PGA TOUR stars did during its heyday.

In addition to the golf course work, the Trilogy Golf Club at La Quinta is putting the final touches on renovations to its clubhouse and signature restaurant. The design and décor will be heavily influenced by the Coachella Valley’s famed mid-century modern aesthetic with thoughtfully planned gathering spaces for friends and families filled with natural light and beauty. The atmosphere will be welcoming and friendly with a relaxed sophistication, and the menu will focus on delivering quality classic fare with inventive touches and craft cocktails and beverages.

THE BEST 36 HOLES IN MONTEREY BAYONET BLACK HORSE

Bayonet and Black Horse are two golf courses you don’t want to miss. Located on the Monterey Bay a few miles from Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, Poppy Hills, and Spanish Bay in the City of Seaside on the land formerly part of the Fort Ord military base are two outstanding tests of golf that are open to the public

The Bayonet course was designed by General Robert McClure who played lefthanded and had a severe slice, so he laid out the course to fit his game. For example, holes #11 through #15 are tagged “Combat Corner” mainly for the exacting shots needed to score well. Today Bayonet is known for narrow fairways which place a premium on accuracy from any of the four tee sets and

bent grass greens that call your best efforts with the putter. From the back it is a challenging 7104 yards with a 74.9 stroke rating and 137 slope but the gentler most forward tees are 5,229-yards and both are par-72.

Bayonet is considered by many to be as challenging as any course on the Monterey Peninsula.

The sister course is Black Horse named in honor of the 11th Cavalry Regiment (nicknamed “Black

Horse”) which was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey from 19191940. Black Horse was designed in 1964 by General Edwin Carnes, the Commanding General of Fort Ord from April 1963 until June of 1965. With the most breath-taking views of the Monterey Bay imaginable, the most recent renovations transformed Black Horse into a longer, more challenging “championship golf course.” With long rolling fairways, “championship golf tees,” and alluring panoramic views of the Monterey Bay, Black Horse will not only take your game through its paces, it will also captivate your soul. Black Horse is now 7,024 yards long, with four sets of tees; a par 72, with a slope of 141 and a rating of 73.7.

General Manager Pat Jones told us that “Bayonet Black Horse are now under new ownership and managed by Troon Golf. The courses are in the best condition in the 15 years I have been here.” He went on to say part of the extensive renovation recently done was to improve turf conditions by converting tees and fairways from bent grass to rye

grass. In addition, Jones said, “To reduce the watering footprint and to do our part to conserve water we removed 55 acres from Black Horse. They were turned back to dunes with sand that came from the property, and we used drought resistant plants.”

The rich history of Bayonet and Black Horse includes play by some

of golf’s greats like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Ben Crenshaw who have all teed it up here as have several former U.S. Presidents including Gerald Ford.

We talked with a club member to get his perspective of the facility and Steve Phillips was very enthusiastic with his comments. He started

Black Horse 605-yard 18th hole showing the areas of the course returned to sand dunes.

by saying he played three or four times a week and as a matter of fact, was heading from his home, which borders the course, to play after our conversation.

Phillips said, “The whole place is pristine condition…really first class. The greens are rolling great but here everything is a sand base so when it rains, even if it’s a hard rain, it drains quickly so you can drive your cart on the fairway.”

“The green complexes are great,” he continued, “and the greens have lots of slope.”

“It’s kind of like one of those hidden gems.”

It comes as no surprise that the courses particularly Bayonet has received numerous awards from national magazines as being among the “Best Courses You Can Play.” Plus, prestigious tournaments are a fixture at Bayonet Black Horse with the Trans-Miss Four-Ball Championship and Sectional Qualifying for the U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur in the recent past. Twice the PGA Professional National Championship, a com-

petition between the best of the club pros nationwide, has been contested here as well as the Senior PGA Professional National Championship.

Last summer Bayonet Black Horse was also the site of a Drive, Chip & Putt qualifier for youngsters wanting to compete in the national event at Augusta National before the Masters.

It’s rare to have insiders such as tournament operators talk with no reservations about the excellence of a tournament venue. This, however, is the case with Bayonet Black Horse as we found out from comments made by two of the most experienced operators in the state.

“The NCPGA has been coming to Bayonet & Black Horse golf courses for years, said Shawn McEntee, PGA the NCPGA Tournament Director. “A great facility like Bayonet and Black Horse course is more than just fairways and greens, it is a blend of challenge, beauty, and the dedication of those who shape it, creating a place where every round is an experience to

remember. If you get the chance, go play this great facility. Our NCPGA Pro’s do!!”

Strong praise indeed and echoed by Joe Wagner Tour Director of the US Am Tour: “I have been operating 36-hole stroke play championships at Bayonet & Blackhorse for close to 20 years and prior to that played there a fair amount while playing college golf at Santa Clara. The course conditions within the past year have gotten to a point where they are the best I have ever seen – which is really saying something because typically they are very good. Now, they are exceptional. The staff there of Michael McDonald, PGA Head Professional Scott Adams, and Pat Jones General Manager are as amazing as the venue and they are all outstanding people. Exceptional course and exceptional experience at Bayonet & Blackhorse.”

Jones, acknowledging the respect players have for the facility, pointed out their forward-looking philosophy was captured on their website, “Continuing to honor past traditions while building for the future.”

2025 PGA Show:

One of the best reasons for returning to January’s PGA Show as I have for more than 30 years is the opportunity to learn the business stories behind some of the 1000+ exhibitors on the floor of the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.

Each story is unique and fascinating and rarely heard by the public.

The golf business could never be described as easy and certainly it is not for the faint-of-heart but those who survive and prosper have a love and a passion for the game and want to help us average players play closer to our potential, have more fun and enjoy our time on the course.

Arnold Palmer put it best in my view saying golf is “deceptively simple and endlessly complicated” and though The King was referring to playing this humbling game, his comment equally applies to trying to bring a product to market and getting it accepted.

Here are a few stories about companies you may or may not know and all are interesting and worthwhile.

Stories Behind the Brands

ASHWORTH GOLF COMPANY

Any list of superstars in the golf apparel business would have to have right at the top John Ashworth the founder of Ashworth Golf who recently returned to his old company as Creative Director.

Ashworth, after a stint caddying for PGA Tour player Mark Wiebe in 1984, thought the clothes professionals were wearing weren’t especially good looking or aiding in the performance pros need to win. Of course, what was true for professionals was even more true for recreational golfers and in 1987 he began his own clothing brand, immodestly named after himself.

The look and style were described as California-cool with the addition of performance-oriented design and the best materials. Tour pros immediately liked what Ashworth was making and among others Fred Couples, Ernie Els and John Cook wore the apparel capping it off with Couples win in the1992 Masters.

For a number of reasons Ashworth left the company in 1997 to pursue among other interests as owner and manager of a public golf course called Goat Hill Park located in Oceanside, Calif. He and his nephew Geoff Cunningham also founded a men’s lifestyle clothing company named Linksoul with headquarters near Goat Hill.

Ashworth Tour Brand Ambassador Fred Couples

BETTINARDI GOLF

Bob Bettinardi made a splash in the putter business with milled heads for the brand name putter companies but decided in 1998 he wanted something for himself and started Bettinardi Golf. His secret was to use a jeweler-grade machine cutter, so the putter face was not only flatter but also exactly perpendicular. This exacting process, which Bettinardi called Honeycomb milling, produced a face without the slightly concave surface of other makers.

The next year Jesper Parnevik won the Greater Greensboro Open using one of the first Bettinardi putters, a BB10, and had a remarkable 99 putts for the week. As the reputation of Bettinardi putters grew more putters and clubs were introduced including a wedge milled from one piece of stainless steel.

After brief partnerships with Ben Hogan Golf and Mizuno, Bettinardi recreated Bettinardi Golf in 2009 and announced two of their most popular lines, the Studio Stock and Signature Series while reviving the original BB series.

The decision to return to Ashworth Golf which now is financed by the Newtimes Group of Hong Kong was not as unusual as it first may sound plus part of the old company staff is with him now including longtime managers Kate Cunningham (Senior Vice President Sales & Business Development), and Eddie Fadel (President) joining former Bobby Jones CEO Andy Bell.

Said Ashworth, “I always had a feeling that at some point, when the timing was right, I’d be back, and now here we go. We’ll continue to innovate, push the boundaries and create great clothing for the golf community. I’m looking forward to sharing my experience and passion with a new generation of golfers.”

In an interview with Lisa Goulian Twiste appearing in PGA Magazine Ashworth pointed out, “We are a golf company, not a “lifestyle” company. Golf is our life; it’s what we do.”

During a conversation with the second generation in the company Bob’s son Sam Bettinardi, who has been with his father now for more than 10 years, he told me they are not a putter company. They are an “engineering company that concentrates on making putters with clean, classy, timeless esthetically pleasing lines.”

Bettinardi putters, irons and wedges are premium priced, but Sam related an interesting statistic that of 500 putter fittings at their 7,000 square foot state-of-theart Oak Brook, Ill. facility not one player was disappointed and returned his putter. Remarkable.

Today’s Bettinardi putters make use of the latest in shafts and designs employing stainless steel and aluminum in the heads, counterbalanced shafts with designs from modern blades to mallets and offering nonglare finishes plus many different hosel configurations.

Sam summed it up well, “Our family name is on everything so it will be the best we can make it.”

SUN MOUNTAIN SPORTS

Missoula, Mont. may not seem like the location for the headquarters of an industry-leading golf company but since its inception by Rick Reimers in 1981 Sun Mountain Sports has never been afraid to do things differently and the move to Montana took place in 1984.

Reimers believed in innovation and among his ideas was the lightweight nylon carry bag and in 1986 a revolutionary carry bag called the Eclipse that had an integral stand, so it never had to be laid on the ground. And speaking of carry bags Sun Mountain made the first water-proof bag making foul-weather play if not enjoyable at least dryer for your clubs.

On the front edge of another game-changing idea namely walking your round, but instead of carrying a bag over your shoulder putting it on a three-wheel pushcart unlike the cumbersome overweight monsters rented by pro shops. Reimer’s were slimmer, easier to push and best of all foldable, so it fit into a car trunk.

Also early on, Sun Mountain got into the outer wear apparel business with waterproof jackets of stretch fabric, insulated jackets, and wind shirts. Their cutting-edge thinking also extended to lessening the hassle of traveling with your clubs

coming out with the four-wheel Club Glider that handles not only your bag and clubs but shoes, jacket and golf balls. After pulling one through what seems like millions of miles in airports and rent-a-car parking lots it’s hard to imagine flying anywhere without it.

Just over two years ago Sun Mountain Sports was purchased from Reimers by Solace Capital Partners and last year golf industry veteran Grant Knudson became President and Chief Brand Officer saying, “Sun Mountain pioneered golf’s iconic stand bags, and I have always had an affinity for innovation and brands that do things first – and Sun Mountain has a lot of firsts. The company’s history of innovation is long-standing, and we have an opportunity to grow our brand and existing product categories, while expanding into new categories.”

And maybe the more things change the more they stay the same. Sun Mountain has just introduced a new Eclipse stand bag, the E-Series with a two-piece hinged bottom making it quicker to extend the legs when put on the ground but also more cart-friendly on either push carts or riding carts.

TOUR EDGE GOLF

Almost 40 years ago a young golf professional in suburban Chicago who also repaired clubs in his garage decided designing and manufacturing golf clubs was what he wanted to do so David Glod started Tour Edge Golf.

The first designs were for average recreational golfers who, then as now, can use all the help from their equipment they can get. The most popular line was named Bazooka and made with lots of forgiveness to help compensate for those imperfect impacts we all have. Tour Edge was a success competing with other club makers who were often corporately owned and many times their size.

Leaping ahead to 2005 Glod and his team figured out how to fuse a stainless-steel body with a titanium face producing their best fairway wood and a new brand which they called Exotics. The technique of combo brazing produced a wood that was 20 yards longer than anything else on the market and sold at the unheard price of $400.

Golfers found the Exotics CBs (for combo brazing) were worth the money and the reputation of Glod and Tour Edge skyrocketed.

As Glod explained it, “The next thing you know we had the #1 player in the world and the Fed Ex season Champ choosing to play Exotics 3-woods and there were big-time guys. Masters, US Opens. Open Championships. Ryder Cups. You name it, Exotics was in the mix. And again, all by choice of the player. They discovered it for themselves, and we supported them as much as we could without having some kind of deal in place.”

“We had found lightening in a bottle.”

It just kept getting better and not only with the premium category Exotics line but also their latest game-improvement clubs called Hot Launch.

Tour Edge is still privately owned with most of the shares held by the Glod family. They operate in 40 countries and have 100 people in North America with world headquarters in Batavia, Ill.

VESSEL GOLF

A golf bag is a golf bag—right?

Maybe, but in the case of Vessel Golf their bags are at a different level, which is evident even to those of us who don’t have a background in bag design and construction.

Ronnie Shaw, Vessel’s CEO, is passionate about his company’s bags and described to me all the factors that go into their products to make them worth a premium price.

Vessel began making bags for Nike when Nike was still in the golf equipment business but when that ended, they brought an ultra-premium bag to market under their own name and it was soon seen on several professional tours. Their bags are made from the highest quality materials with obsessive care to the details from design to personalization.

Shaw said he knows making a product that is 80% of the best that can be done is relatively straightforward however,. “Pushing it to 100% is very difficult and is the magic that produces true value.”

He illustrated this with bag features pioneered by Vessel such as carbon fiber stand legs, magnetic closures for pockets and waterproof zippers, which

if you have been caught in the rain is a big plus. Vessel holds patents on a self-adjusting double strap used for stand bags which also have a patented low-profile base that rotates so it is always flat on the ground. Combined with the wide spreading legs it makes for great stability regardless of the terrain.

Shaw also talked about the future saying they have a five-year roadmap of new product introductions they were following. Presently stand bags make up approximately 45% of their volume, cart bags 30% and tour bags 5%. Incidentally touring pros think so much of Vessel bags they pay for them, a strong commentary on Vessel bag’s quality.

I asked about the pricing, especially of their popular stand bags which are at the very top of the bag price spectrum and Shaw quickly responded there were no plans for a downmarket bag at any price.

Vessel also has a quality line of accessories from head covers to travel bags, and backpacks plus racquet sports bags.

Winter Golf Wear

Even though its not exactly balmy that doesn’t mean golf is out of the question. Layering is the answer and here are some suggestions we like that go well on the course or on the town.

Amble Clothing

Linksoul

Most every golfer will love the Cascade Long Sleeve Tee and it will become a go-to wardrobe item. It’s ultra soft and the chest and back limited-edition graphics are unique. Woven from 65% poly and 35% cotton yarn it is machine washable and will take you back to those camping trips as a kid.

Hoodies are very popular and practical for on course wear as well. We like Amble’s Asilomar Hoodie ($170) since it is a perfect layering piece made from a thick super soft recycled nylon mix fabric that has just a bit of Spandex for stretch comfort. The design includes a raglan sleeve, and the bottom has a scallop curve. Choose from either black or navy.

Ashworth Golf

Duca Del Cosma

Classic looking shoes are always in style and the Churchill by Duca Del Cosma is perfect winter or summer. Priced at $239 a pair in Black, Blue or Cognac they are made from Italian Nappa leather, waterproof of course and since they use the Airplay 11 outsole may be worn on the course or to the office. They even come with matching and contrasting laces.

The LaQuinta Quarter Zip from Ashworth is a perfect top for cool weather and is available in Driver Navy, Heather Grey, Black, Violet Heather, Seafoam and Bombay Heather. The jersey knit construction is 100% polyester and water repellent with a soft feel for comfortable wearing. It also has SPF 50+ protection from the sun. $88

Turtleson

The Holladay Jacket by Turtleson is warm without being bulky and the quilted shell is made from nylon cire (glossy-look) fabric while the stretchy sleeves and side panels are 80% polyester and 20% Spandex. It is ideal for really cold temperatures on the links but won’t bunch up and restrict your swing. The men’s Holladay is $195, the women’s $190 and the Holladay Vest is $165

TIGER

AT THE TOP

Perfection in a photo. Just seeing this photo of Tiger Woods at the top of his backswing just exhibits perfection. Let’s take a look at a few things to copy. First is his coil into his right leg. He’s sitting into his right side maintaining his knee flex and posture. His right foot is in balance, solid to the ground. Second his shoulders have made a big turn and notice the club is away from his head keeping the width and structure at the top. Third his right elbow points down towards his right hip. If you want to get your arms and club on plane keeping that right elbow pointing down at the top is key. Of course being flexible like Tiger helps. This picture of Tiger is a beautiful thing to look at as a teacher. See if you can try to do a few of things Tiger does. You might not look as perfect as he but you try to imitate certain positions.
