WE THE PEOPLE
TATTOO: @INKBYJOEYMULLEN GUN: RUGER GP-100 357 MAGNUM
Welcome to the first edition of CALGUNR Magazine! I want to welcome all the gun owners here in the Golden State, both rookies and veterans. This magazine is created to bring together the gun folks from all walks of life and every fringe to try and show that we’re more alike than different. I grew up all over Southern California from Los Angeles and Orange County out to the Inland Empire. Living on adrenaline every day out there till one day I woke up and decided to aquire an education. With a degree in hand, I landed Art Director roles and put my touch on magazines such as OYE Magazine, Bombs Magazine, Lowrider Magazine and most recently, DUB Magazine, for another notch on the belt. Needless to say, I’ve got the know-how when it comes to the magazine game. Now I’m turning my passion for firearms and my experience in publishing to create CALGUNR Magazine. We wont get into the other mags out there and what
they do, just know that it’s time for something new to hit the street and lead the way. A fresh perspective on exactly who makes up the gun world here in California. But we wont discriminate, we will also show support to the many dope firearm customizers out there across the country. You know who you are!
we need to do something about that, so get out and vote! And btw, you’ve probably guessed thats not me in the pik below, but I thought you might like to see a tiny glipmse of our next issue! Stay tuned, stay safe and stay armed.

FIFTY SHADES OF
WORDS: FIFTY SHADES OF FDE
If you’re on Instagram, and have an interest in guns and gear, you may already follow me. If not, make sure that you do! A little about myself: I am born and raised right here in California. My parents were immigrants from the Vietnam war making me a first generation American. My childhood didn’t involve guns whatsoever, other than seeing them in movies and on TV. My interest in firearms started around high school when I would go to the range with my best friend and his father. It was a lot of fun and this experience gave
me a better understanding and respect for guns. When I turned 18, I bought my first firearm, a pump action shotgun. At 21, I purchased my first pistol. Not long after that, I entered the police academy and started my career in law enforcement. Using my experience as a responsible gun owner and law enforcement officer, as well as my love of writing and photography, I decided to start my own blog, Fifty Shades of FDE (www. fiftyshadesoffde.com) to share my knowledge with other like-
minded members in the 2A and law enforcement communities. I write product reviews for guns and gear here as well as a for few other publications such as www. breachbangclear.com More important than reading guns and gear reviews is training with the weapon you carry. I always train as much as my schedule allows. If you use firearms for self-defense and especially if you’re a police officer, you can never have enough training. I am a huge proponent for concealed carry by responsible
members of the community. I know from my own experience as a LEO, we’re responding to life and death incidents from several minutes away while the people in danger are already on the scene. A citizen equipped with the right tools and training has a much greater chance of stopping the threat and will ultimately survive the event by being armed and ready than by waiting passively for the police to arrive. I plan on sharing my knowledge and experience here at CALGUNR Magazine.

DAYS 10TOO
WORDS: JASON DAVIS
LATE
RECONSIDERING THE 10-DAY WAITING PERIOD IN THE MIDST OF A PANDEMIC In times of state or national emergencies, California’s 10-day wait can mean the difference between life and death. Should it be suspended during national emergencies? You bet! As it stands now, California, like the rest of the world, is facing the world-wide spread of the COVID-19 virus. Of concern is the fact that COVID-19 spreads exponentially. With exponential growth, the numbers start out small and remain small for a period of time. For example, the first 10 numbers in a sequence that doubles every period would be as follows: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024. Exponential growth, however, is an infectious disease doctor’s nightmare, particularly as more time passes and the numbers increase. Using the same rate as before, by the time the sequence is at 100,000, the tenperiod sequence would be start at 100,000 but end at 51,200,000. With COVID 19, the rate of growth is approximated as having an increase of 76% per day. Thus, a decision to purchase a firearm when the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is 100,000 means that, all things held equal, by the time the purchaser can lawfully acquire their firearm there would be an estimated 50,192,559 confirmed COVID-19 cases – a significant increase in the risk of contacting the virus, which is especially concerning for those persons who are or who live older adults or persons of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions.
Moreover, as the number of confirmed cases increases, so to does that myriad of cities and counties that are imposing a patchwork of “Orders” that limit retail sales to “Essential Businesses,” each with differing definitions of “Essential Businesses” and differing
application and misapplication of the same by local law enforcement. While a firearm retailer may be open to take your order, they may be forced to suspend all operations during the ten-day period – leaving you as the owner unable to acquire and possess the firearm you now own. This, of course, assumes that there is a desired firearm available to purchase! Jason Davis is an attorney who has been involved in the Calfornia firearms industry for the past 33 years - both as a manufacturer and as industry counsel. His law firm, The Davis Law Firm, now associates with Michel & Associates P.C. where he focuses on firearm laws and technology.

SOME ONE HAS PAWNED? An immaculate deeply engraved Perrazi shotgun. HAVE ALL THE NEW LAWS THAT HAVE BEEN PASSED AFFECTED BUSINESS? Laws are always tough to adapt to. They effect business in multiple ways. The two main ways are turning buyers off from making new purchases and also the amount of time it takes to retrain staff on complying with new laws. DO YOU PARTICIPATE AND IN 2ND AMENDMENT ACTIVITIES OR PLAN TO? As a team at the shop we practice shooting at the local range and some of us enjoy a hunting trip from time to time. ANY ADVICE TO YOUD LIKE TO SHARE FOR SOMEONE INTERESTED BUYING A USED GUN? Shop around and ask lots of questions. We see so many used guns that are really close to new condition. TEACHING BASIC HANDGUN IN CALIFORNIA
firearm instructor in my area. I took all the NRA classes needed to get certified in basic handgun. And BOOM, High Caliber Firearms Training and Education was created! I am happy to say I have helped over 250 people become safe and responsible gun owners. One of my favorite parts of being an instructor is having a woman begin the lesson just SHAKING with fear, then ending the class with a huge smile on her face and asking me, “When can we do this again?” An even greater feeling is when I get a picture sent to me of her first firearm purchase. It makes me feel like I am contributing to the safety of my clients. Hands down the worst part of my job is when a client asks me how they can obtain their Concealed Carry Permit. If they are a resident of Los Angeles County, I have to be the bearer of bad news and inform them that, unfortunately, their Sheriff and Police Chief not only will not allow them to Conceal Carry, they are actively revoking legally obtained permits now. In my opinion this is completely unconstitutional.
WORDS: STAFF PHOTOS COURTESY: COOL FIRE TRAINER
WORDS: HEATHER ALLEN PHOTOS COURETESY: HEATHER ALLEN
My name is Heather Allen and I am an NRA Certified Handgun instructor serving Orange and Los Angeles County. I did not grow up shooting firearms but fell in love after my husband, a Navy veteran and Sheriff’s Deputy, started taking me shooting consistently. In 2017, I began working for the California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA) as an Outreach Advocate. I learned so much during my years with CRPA, for instance, there are eight to ten million gun owners in this state. Think of what could happen if we all banded together and voted in FAVOR of our Second Amendment rights? I also learned how often Americans are SAVED by guns every year. Word began to spread about my job and I started getting phone calls from friends asking if I could teach them how to shoot. Then I began receiving phone calls from friends of friends saying things like, “So and so mentioned you know a lot about guns. My husband just bought me one for Christmas and I have no idea how to use it. I think it’s called a Glack?” I remember telling this woman, “I’ll be right there!” After a while I started thinking to myself that there truly was a need for a female
LASER TRAINING SYSTEMS
In contrast, just a hop over to Orange or Riverside County, and you now have a 98% success rate to attain a Concealed Carry Permit. There are over 20,000 Orange County residents putting their safety into their own hands daily. I thank my lucky stars that I live in a County with a Pro Second Amendment Sheriff. It has opened my eyes to realizing I would absolutely never live in Los Angeles County again solely because of this reason. Once you have a right, it is difficult to imagine being forced to live without it. Overall, my hope is that people who are scared to shoot for their first time will have the confidence in themselves to try at least once. And if they should find that they actually enjoy shooting, my wish is that they will also not be scared to tell others that they had a positive experience with firearms. My advice to gun enthusiasts is to offer to take new shooters to the range. You might be surprised how just one person can change many people’s minds surrounding our Second Amendment Right! Being stuck at home can be an opportunity to sharpen your handgun skills. The simplest way is to remove the ammo from your piece and practice using conventional ‘dry fire’ techniques. Beyond that, get into the modern age with the are various laser-based gadgets to make this activity even more fun. They come in two basic flavors: First, you have non-guns that mimic your real firearm. These are trigger-resetting laser non-guns. To add the feel of recoil, consider laser-enabled airsoft and similar devices powered by compressed gas (propane-based or CO2). Then there are laser accessories for your real pistol. This includes laser cartridges that insert into the chamber and are activated by the firing pin. Another option is vibration-activated lasers that insert into the muzzle or mount to the accessory rail of your pistol. But the ultimate solution is the CoolFire Trainer conversion barrel. Powered by compressed CO2 gas, each trigger pull discharges the optional laser and cycles the slide, which gives you realistic felt recoil and resets the trigger for the next shot. Look out for a full product review coming in the next issue of CALGUNR!
VIDEO GAMES COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE WORDS: GEORGE ELISEO
My partner and I are on one side of a wide hallway, exchanging fire with an unknown number of terrorists on the other side. These have all been blind shots with no target, just spraying and praying, as they say. Everything falls silent for a minute. I figure now is the time to assault and I rush through the hallway. I get lucky and catch the terrorist just as he’s about to throw a grenade, his rifle slung around his back. I shoot him with a three-round burst from my Colt M4A1 rifle, point blank in the chest. He goes down without a sound, but I’m already moving past him. My luck holds as I find his partner a short distance away. His back is against the wall, head down in the middle of a reload. He looks up, but too late. I squeeze the trigger and unload another three round burst into his ten ring. Moving forward, the sound of gunfire in the distance. My adrenaline pumping, I head towards the target area. I round the corner and see a third terrorist in the distance, maybe 25 yards away. More good luck as his back is to me. He didn’t expect that any cops would make it through the choke point. I shoot him on the run,
unloading the rest of my magazine at full auto and he goes down. I change magazines and continue to clear the area. I hear the other guys on my team barking into their radios, but I’m moving too fast and too pumped to take in what they’re saying. The crackle of automatic weapons fire is constant in the background, but my footfalls seem loudest in my ears now. I’m moving through an underground corridor then back out into the sunlight, I’m running along a dirt road when I see something out of place down and to my left. It’s another terrorist, hiding in the shadows of an alley behind some crates, his AK-47 down at the low ready. I pivot to my left and begin shooting, bringing the front sight of the Colt down diagonally across his body. Wood chips are flying off the crates and then the bullets make contact with his center mass. He’s dead and stinking, the last of the bad guys. I’m rewarded with a loud, “Multi-Kill!” from my computer’s speakers. Our team has just won this round of Counter Strike, (thanks to me). Okay, so it appears to the unenlightened that I’m
just playing a computer game, specifically what is known in the genre as a “first-person shooter” or FPS. In fact, what I am really doing is running my own personal combat tactics training simulator. Hard to believe? Remember, your eyes/ vision and situational awareness skills are the most important component in any tactical situation. A study conducted by Daphne Bavelier, associate professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester, revealed some surprising discoveries regarding the visual attention of FPS game players. First, let’s define the terms used here. Visual attention is quite different from visual acuity. Visual acuity is merely the fancyshmancy way of saying good vision, your basic eye-chart score type vision. Visual attention is the ability to monitor and track objects within all fields of vision, including objects in the peripheral (the sides of your eyes). Which is a pretty good skill to have if you’re a cop that just walked into a room full of bad guys, I’d say. Several specifically designed tests were used to measure the
participant’s visual attention. Participants were made up of FPS game players (referred to as “action” game players here) and non-game players.
THESE ARE THE RESULTS DOCUMENTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER STUDY: 1. We have found that action game players are better at localizing a target object in a cluttered environment than nongame players. 2. We have found that action game players can apprehend and keep track of more objects at once than non- game players. 3. We have found that action game players can process fast occurring visual information better than non-game players.
In a recent press release regarding this study, Professor Bavelier said, “Players can process
visual information more quickly and can track 30 percent more objects then non-players. Several game players even achieved perfect scores on tests barely doable for nongame players.” The Skillz: Localize a target in a cluttered environment. Track multiple targets. Process fast-occurring visual information. Isn’t this exactly what every police officer or gun owner must do in a shoot/ don’t shoot situation? This study couldn’t be more relevant to police work if it had the Live PD team doing a cameo appearance. This study also found that a non-game player could “train up” by playing an FPS game, (in this case, Medal Of Honor), and noticeably improve their visual attention score within ten hours of game playing. However, as Professor Bavelier noted, “One important point is that the performance of those individuals trained on an action game, although much improved, still falls far short of that of “true” video game players. The exact amount and type of video game experience needed to achieve these results isn’t known, but is likely to be quite substantial.”

QUICK TIPS
EYES & EARS EVERY FIREARM AS IF 1. TREAT IT WERE LOADED Imagine you’re at a friend’s place and a buddy of yours has a new gun that he just picked up. He asks if you want to see it and you say, “Hell yeah!” Even if he shows you that the gun is clear and sets it down, the first thing you should always do when you pick it up is to safety-check it. Always double check, always!
Inside most shooting facilities, both eye and ear protection is required, and even if they are not, it’s a good idea to wear both at all times. Your eyes are vulnerable to any number of potential hazards while shooting, handling or cleaning a firearm, such as flying brass, parts or lead particles. Just like the eyes, ears are just as important to protect. Research has overwhelmingly shown that exposing unprotected ears to a single gunshot can cause a degree of permanent hearing loss. This is why it is important to wear hearing protection at all times when participating in, or within the proximity of shooting.
POINT A FIREARM AT 2. NEVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT
WILLING TO MAIM/DESTROY/KILL. If you’ve done your safety-check and are absolutely sure that your gun is unloaded, that does not give you the go-ahead to be careless with it. Remembering the first rule, The Gun Is ALWAYS Loaded, you should never point it toward anybody. Always be conscious of where you are aiming.
3.
KEEP FINGER STRAIGHT AND OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO FIRE Keep the weapon on ‘Safe’ until you intend to fire. In a hunting or target range situation with long guns or target pistols, this is good advice. HOWEVER if it’s your Everyday Carry (EDC) or your duty weapon, and you do not train with the safety on, this is not good advice! The way you train is the way you fight. Safety off, finger off is a better combo that will keep you alive when you’re in the grease.
THE WEAPON ON ‘SAFE’ 4. KEEP UNTIL YOU INTEND TO FIRE
Keep the weapon on ‘Safe’ until you intend to fire. In a hunting or target range situation with long guns or target pistols, this is good advice. HOWEVER if it’s your Everyday Carry (EDC) or your duty weapon, and you do not train with the safety on, this is not good advice! The way you train is the way you fight. DRY FIRING ////// What is dry fire practice? For those of you who are new to the concept of dry fire, it’s training/practicing with a real firearm, but without live ammunition, Dry firing is simply pulling the trigger of a firearm without live ammunition in the chamber. Since the chamber is empty, nothing will go off and hence the shot is “dry”. Newer firearms are
SNAP CAPS
typically dry-fire friendly and if you are worried about firing pin damage, use snap caps (see below). Think about it... The only way to get good at something is to practice. While the range is always the best way to practice your skills, with our current COVID-19 situation, dryfiring is a great alternative.
Snap caps are made to protect your firearm by relieving the stress on the firing pin and firing pin springs during dry firing. Snap caps are also a great tool to practice dry firing your weapon to teach safe gun handling, improve your shooting skills, (especially finding the right finger grip and amount of pressure required to squeeze the trigger) and also to tune your trigger. There are many brands and colors available in different calibers online or at your LGS.

UNITED DEFENSE TACTICAL
A LOOK INSIDE ONE OF THE PREMIERE REALITY BASED FIREARMS TRAINING CENTERS IN CALIFORNIA WORDS: STAFF PHOTOS: DONNY DOQUISA
HOW DID UNITED DEFENSE TACTICAL GET IT’S START? United Defense Tactical came from the need to have reality-based dynamic training available to civilians, military and law enforcement. Static, no-pressure shooting, focusing on paper targets fifteen yards downrange of you is about as unrealistic as it gets, and almost in no way prepares you for a real self-defense situation. We also teach combatives. (“Combatives” is the term for hand-to-hand combat training and techniques within the United States military). I have an instructor’s background in a variety
of martial arts, MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Gracie Survival Tactics for law enforcement, ICS, Krav Maga, Rapid Assault Tactics (developed for SEAL Team 6) and other close quarter combat systems. With the high level of firearms, combatives and other self-defense training experience that our instructors have, we were able to put together something really unique that does not exist anywhere else in California. WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND WITH FIREARMS AND WORK IN THE INDUSTRY? We have been positively impacting the industry
with elite reality-based training and private security for over a decade now. We have trained thousands of civilians, law enforcement, military and first responders. In the private sector, I have run over 20 security sites and dozens of executive protection and security teams. Personally, I’ve been around guns my whole life, but was very fortunate to get advanced reality-based training with former SEAL and MARSOC operators/instructors. I have also trained with some world champion shooters, namely J.J. Racaza and Robert Vogel.namely J.J .Racaza and Robert Vogel.
WHAT TYPE OF QUALIFICATIONS DO YOUR INSTRUCTORS HOLD? Our instructors have some of the highest qualifications in the industry. All of our instructors are former special operations guys, or have been trained by the highest level instructors from the spec ops community. Our instructors bring with them real world operational and combat experience, with many being former MARSOC, SEALs, or former military and overseas operators. Our well-rounded team of instructors brings a wide range of experience to the table including: combat shooting, tactical medicine, private security detail experience, executive protection, Department of Defense/Department of State contracting, former FBI agents, defensive driving skills and all areas of combatives training. YOU’VE BEEN AT THIS FOR A WHILE NOW, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ALONG THE WAY? A few things. First of all, you don’t know what you don’t know, so part of what we have to do is educate people that the static no-threat training they do, may actually get them killed in a real world gunfight. Secondly, that this is a lifestyle not a hobby. You have to put in the time and the reps or you lose the skills. One class or infrequent training is not going to prepare you or keep you prepared, for a real-life threat. Simply put, you are either prepared and stay prepared, or you are a potential victim. BEFORE COMING TO YOUR CLASSES, SHOULD AN INDIVIDUAL HAVE PRIOR EXPERIENCE WITH FIREARMS? No experience is required. We love training a blank slate and we work with brand new shooters all the way up to expert level. We train SWAT Team members, former Spec Ops, military, civilians and more. If someone can learn safety and be dedicated to training, we can take someone from never picking up a gun to Spec Ops skill level over a period of time. WHAT’S THE AGE LIMIT TO USE YOUR FACILITY? For our live fire courses, the minimum age is 16. For the training facility it is 14, but we are going to add youth classes, in the future without the shoot/no shoot scenarios. Only focusing and fundamentals and skill building. We are always open to the idea of training any and all who may want or need the training; regardless of their end goal, experience level, or age. HOW DO THE SIMULATIONS PREPARE SOMEONE FOR REAL WORLD SITUATIONS? Our state of the art immersive simulator puts the student in a heightened level of reality and also under pressure, which forces them to navigate through several difficult scenarios and requires them to make tough decisions, communicate and deescalate where possible. This will teach
the student how to make good, legal ‘use of force’ decisions. The simulator isn’t just for firearms training but also a stress simulator. It brings the training to a more realistic level and helps develop a tactical mindset. Having this kind of mindset training develops situational awareness, extreme alertness, and will carry over to all areas of the student’s life. WHICH TYPE OF FIREARMS DO YOU TRAIN INDIVIDUALS TO HANDLE? All types of firearms and weapon systems. With the simulator, we can train handgun, rifle, shotgun, taser and OC spray. We also train improvised weapons and close quarter combat (self-defense) tactics. On the live-fire range, we can train students on all firearms they may own, including long range precision rifle.
“WE BRING THE TRAINING TO A MORE REALISTIC LEVEL AND HELP YOU DEVELOP A TACTICAL MINDSET” WHAT ARE SOME OF THE IMMEDIATE BENEFITS AN INDIVIDUAL WILL NOTICE AFTER TAKING ONE OF YOUR CLASSES? Confidence in dealing with a threat. Confidence in communication, either using commands or deescalating the situation and an understanding of the concepts that allow you to be a dynamic thinking shooter in a variety of potential deadly scenarios. ANY BIG THINGS COMING IN 2020 FOR UDT? We look forward to growth of our current facility and the opening of other markets. UDT recently expanded our Costa Mesa facility to allow for force on force Simunition training, indoor range (non-lethal) as well as a full self-defense training and instructor programs. We also recently added a resident medical instructor to our staff, adding into our programs several courses in tactical and trauma medicine, basic life-saving, wound control, and more. Furthermore; we are looking to focus on adding certification and recertification courses for medical professionals, from CPR certification, all the way up to tactical combat casualty care. All of our medical programs will be affiliated with the American Heart Association and National Association of Emergency Medicine.

OC CUSTOM COATING
FROM GARAGE HOBBY TO FULL BLOWN CERAKOTE HOUSE PAUL TEVES MADE IT HAPPEN
WORDS/PHOTOS: STAFF
Tell us a little about how OC Custom Coating got started? I never intended this to turn into a business. I grew up working on my own firearms and customizing them. I wasn’t satisfied with the subpar work I was seeing from other shops. I decided to learn and do it properly from home with my personal firearms, and then friends wanted theirs coated, and it quickly accelerated to others and businesses who wanted me to coat after seeing the quality. And so the business organically formed. What types of firearm services does OCCC provide? I’ve always been strict when it comes to quality and that strictness extends to all the services we provide whether in-house or outsourced. We currently offer:
OC CUSTOM COATING 3164 E LA PALMA AVE L, ANAHEIM, CA 92806 714.202.7552 OCCUSTOMCOATING.COM
- Multiple types of coatings for fire arms and other products (specialty coating for car exhausts, and slick coatings for moving parts, and much more) - Engraving services including some highly unique and customized engravings - Machining services specializing in slide cuts and customizations - Stippling for polymer framed handguns and rifles including cus tom artwork within the stippling - Armorer work from complete disassembly & reassembly to parts installation and fitment
Stripping all the oils will result in an 4. overall better finish for of time.
a longer period
How does OC Custom Coating set itself apart from its competitors? Quality is first and foremost. From our preparation of the parts, to our application of coating, and through our strict quality control in the final product. We hold to the highest of standards in the industry and we refuse to cut corners. Can someone just walk in with a firearm and ask to have it cerakoted? Yes, Clients have the choice of walking into our showroom during business hours or mailing their parts in and discussing their project over the phone or through email. We are a fully licensed FFL shop which means clients can legally mail us their firearms and we can send them directly back to the client. No middle man or other FFL is needed. Are there any drawbacks to Cerakoting your firearm such as malfunctions, warranty, etc? Cerakote actually enhances the performance of most firearms (when applied correctly). The thin, low friction coating allows parts to move smoothly and freely with minimal oil. We stand behind our work and offer a lifetime guarantee against any application defects. If our coatings ever crack, flake, or peel then we redo the parts at no charge.
Once the stripping portion of the 5. process is complete.
The firearm will be placed into the sand blast cabinet.
Any tips for someone interested in cerakoting their firearm? Contact us if you want to learn more about the coating, the benefits, or the different types of coatings we offer. We’re here to help including design ideas and colors suggestions for your parts. Say we have an AR15 and want to cerakote the complete upper, lower and hand guard, whats the average turn around time for something like this? Our turnaround times varies but typically it’s 4 weeks or less for most coating jobs. Expedite options are available for those with time sensitive projects. Does OC Custom Coating have any type of 2nd Amendment support activities currently or plan to? From owner to employees we’re active in supporting our freedoms including the 2nd amendment. As the owner, I hold a lifetime membership with the NRA and support our local CRPA. Where can we find OC Custom Coating online and on social media? FT3
TACTICAL FOREST SHOWS US WHY FT3 IS THE MOST MODERN INDOOR RANGE TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND HOW YOU GOT INTO THE INDUSTRY AND EVENTUALLY INVOLVED WITH FT3. I was born and raised in Orange County. After 20 plus years I retired as a police commander and started working for FT3 as a General Manager in January of 2016. I have over 20 years of experience with firearms in law enforcement and have always enjoyed shooting. I believe recreational shooting is a fun and important sport as well as a great way to exercise a person’s Second Amendment right in addition to protecting themselves and their family. WHAT TYPES OF SERVICES DOES FT3 PROVIDE?
FT3 is a full service indoor range. We host numerous classes related to firearms training; including CCW classes, pistol and tactical shooting; basic and beginning classes and we also offer one on one personalized training classes. We also manufacture ammunition and sell bulk ammunition. HOW DOES FT3 DIFFER FROM OTHER INDOOR FACILITIES? FT3 is the largest indoor shooting range in Orange County. It has 28 lanes and a large spacious training classroom. We also have the cleanest air filtration system of any range in Southern California. What really sets us apart though is our extremely professional and courteous staff. We make all our guests feel welcomed and valued.
WORDS/PHOTOS: STAFF
DO YOU NEED TO HAVE FIREARMS EXPERIENCE WHEN COMING TO SHOOT AT FT3? You do not need any experience or training. We specialize in new shooters and have Range Safety Officers out on the firing line at all times to help guide, teach and show you have to properly and safely shoot. No other range in the area offers that level of service for new shooters. WITH THESE COMPLEX AND CONFUSING LAWS, WHAT TYPES OF FIREARMS CAN YOU BRING TO THE RANGE? You can bring any California compliant and legal firearm from a 22 caliber to a 338 WinMag. We also allow shotguns to be used at our range.
CHECK OUT THE VIDEO @ WWW.CALGUNR.COM ANY TIPS FOR NEW SHOOTERS TO HAVE A BETTER EXPERIENCE THEIR FIRST TIME AT AN INDOOR RANGE? First and foremost, relax and come in with a positive attitude. We will help you become proficient and guide you through the learning phase of shooting. Make sure you wear comfortable clothing and preferably clothing and shoes that cover your body so you don’t have a spent cases burn you. It’s also fun to come with a friend. Make sure any firearm you bring is unloaded and in a case. BEING IN THE INDUSTRY FOR SO LONG, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED AND HOW DO YOU SEE FIREARM RANGES EVOLVING IN THE FUTURE? We have seen more novice shooters than ever before. We’ve also seen that ranges are now offering a wide and diverse choice of different training. The teaching of firearm safety has increased and that’s a good thing. Ranges also have become more “user friendly” and “customer service friendly” as well. DOES FT3 SUPPORT ANY TYPE OF 2ND AMENDMENT ACTIVITIES OR GROUPS? FT3 is a proud member of NRA, NSFF and CRPA. We frequently hold events and sponsor functions for these organizations. DO YOU GET A LOT OF CELEBRITIES WHO SHOOT AT FT3? Yes we do, but of course we can’t divulge any names. WHERE CAN WE FIND FT3 ONLINE AND ON SOCIAL MEDIA? Find us on Instagram at @FT3_tactical and on Facebook under “FT3 Tactical”.

H T I W D E M CONSU
WORDS/PHOTOS: STAFF
IN BECOMING AN EXPERT ELLAR HIS FIELD : JOSEPH CU T CLOTH IS CUT FROM A DIFFEREN
HOW WAS KAOS CONCEALMENT BORN? Kaos grew out of Havok Airsoft. In 2011 my wife and I opened an indoor airsoft field in Bakersfield, CA. I’d always had an interest in holsters after seeing some displayed at a friend of mine’s store(Code Red Airsoft) and began researching how to make them myself. Once we began making more holsters we began doing gun shows and LEO events that led us to close up the airsoft field and make our priority the holster business. WHAT SETS KAOS CONCEALMENT APART FROM OTHER HOLSTER SYSTEMS? As someone who has an EDC pistol and is also a shooting enthusiast,
I’ve always been the guy with boxes of holsters everywhere for different situations. Even in the airsoft world. Most holster makers offer a holster that fits either left-handed shooters or right-handed shooters. One only for concealed carry and one just for the range. My goal as a company is to design a simple low profile holster that fits most anyone’s need for Every Day Carry. We’ve been able to incorporate all of these features into just one holster, thus making our product unique from everything else out there. WHAT FIREARMS DO YOU MAKE HOLSTERS FOR CURRENTLY? We make holsters for all of the most popular brands including Glock, Sig, 1911,
and Smith and Wesson.
“MY GOAL AS A COMPANY IS TO DESIGN Sig, 1911, and Smith and SIMPLE LOW Wesson. PROFILE HOLSTERS THAT FIT MOST ANYONE’S NEED FOR DAILY CARRY.”
WHAT STEPS DO YOU TAKE TO MAKE SURE YOUR PRODUCT IS OF THE UTMOST QUALITY? Each holster is designed using computer software which allows us to accurately adjust any molds before they are cut. Every holster in our Fusion line of holsters is vacuumed formed and CNC cut for accuracy. Each holster is then hand-finished by our staff, buffing and sanding smooth any rough and sharp edges. Each holster is then individually hand bent over either a real gun or mold and hand-riveted. After which we use the same mold or gun to test each holster for draw. Once the holster has been buffed and checked we add our Quick-Clip to it.
YOU’VE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR A WHILE NOW, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED? Since we first started, we’ve learned that customer feedback is invaluable to us. We could’ve stopped doing gun shows years ago, but it’s at these shows that I get to interact directly with consumers to hear their needs, feedback and what they may or may not like in our holsters or about our competitors. I have also learned that I need to keep true to our goal of designing holsters according to our idea that we want to accommodate all shooters and their needs in one holster. Without this kind of information, we’d be making holsters like everyone else. In recent years, the gun show circuit’s been dying down with a lot of cities trying to regulate them out of existence, but we will keep going. HAS THE CURRENT CALIFORNIA FIREARMS LEGAL LANDSCAPE AFFECTED BUSINESS? When I first started selling at gun shows, they were huge events and venues.
Costa Mesa gun show in Orange County was filled to the brim with vendors. With the increased California regulation of handguns, I saw sales declining for guns that were now made illegal by Sacramento. I’ve also seen less people in attendance at the shows. Since seeing all of this, I’ve begun to add more Law Enforcement Events and training seminars. These events have given me a larger insight to the needs of LEO and citizens.
WHERE CAN WE FIND KAOS CONCEALMENT PRODUCTS CURRENTLY? On our website, Amazon sold through CDC Tactical with Prime and various stores throughout the USA. Contact us for a location near you.
ANY TIPS ON WHAT TYPE HOLSTER SOMEONE SHOULD SELECT WHEN IN THE MARKET WHETHER IT IS A NEWBIE OR SEASONED SHOOTER? I make Kydex holsters but I always tell the shooter to buy something that works for them and is comfortable. That may be leather or nylon. I also mention that is how you end up with a box of holsters and at the end of the day most people end their search for holsters with Kydex because it just works. Picking a holster is like anything else. You want it to be reliable like your firearm.
ANY FINAL THOUGHTS Our goal has always been to create holsters that fit everyone’s needs and scenarios. Our motto of “one holster, endless possibilities” has been something we live by when thinking about new holsters even as we begin to cater more to our law enforcement family. Our future looks bright and we are starting to branch out with custom designed gear (bags, belts, and clothing) to go with our holsters.

BACHIR’S PASSION FOR THE INFAMOUS AK47 IS ONE OF A KIND HOW DID DESERT FOX GET STARTED? Like every venture of mine, I would say that Desert Fox started in my heart years ago, when I was in the deserts of Algeria. In my head it began in 2009 with the encouragement of many friends in the industry such as Mar Krebs of Krebs Customs, Jim Fuller of Rifle Dynamic and Troy Sellers of In Range. With their push I left the ranks of the employed and started my own company, Desert Fox.
“WE ARE CONSTANTLY SOURCING QUALITY KITS FROM AROUND THE WORLD” WHERE DID THE NAME DESERT FOX COME FROM? I chose a name from my Algerian heritage because I wanted a name that evoked a strong image. The seven year Algerian war of independence from France ended with a treaty in 1962 that ended 130 years of French rule. As a native Algerian, I take pride in the cunning Algerian fighters who came to be known as desert foxes. Living in the Mojave Desert, and proud of the opportunity afforded us in America, together with my wife and two sons we decided to name our new company Desert Fox Sales.
WHAT KIND OF WEAPON PARTS DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN? Desert Fox Sales specializes in AK and SKS parts . We also carry a variety of other parts such as MG42 and Sten. We chose to carry Sten parts because it is one of the best rifles ever made and they are becoming very popular.
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST AK KITS YOU CAN BUY CURRENTLY? Other high quality parts kits I keep in our inventory are the Hungarian units. Even though most do not have matching numbers, the quality is well worth the price.
ARE SKS RIFLES GAINING IN POPULARITY? SKS is also one of the best rifles ever made. They too are very popular and inexpensive.
DO YOU SEE AK KITS FROM ABROAD CEASING ANYTIME SOON? We are constantly sourcing quality kits from around the world. While European sources are slowly drying up, we manage to keep finding good deals for our customers.
I SEE YOU HAVE SOME VERY SPECIAL PIECES, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST VALUABLE PIECE IN YOUR COLLECTION? Hard to say, since we carry a lot of high-value pieces here, some that are considered very unusual and rare to find in the US, such as the East German survival knife/bayonet KM87. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RAREST PARTS KITS TO SOURCE HERE IN THE US? The parts kits that we carry are some of the toughest to find available. I would say the East German AK-74 parts kits. I had the opportunity to import 200 of these kits a few years ago. Since then I have not seen any East German AK74 parts kits available in the States or Europe.
IF SOMEONE IS INTERESTED IN YOUR KITS, WHERE CAN THEY FIND YOU ONLINE? Our website at www.desertfoxsales.com LAST THOUGHTS? As a personal note to all who believe in the right to bear arms, we Californians need to get involved in our state politics. We cannot afford to let the liberals win. For some, moving out of California may be easier. We do understand, but we also need people to stay, stand and fight for the rights granted to us in the 2nd Amendment.

GUN COLLECTOR, TATTOO ARTISTS, FAMILY & BUSINESS MAN : JOEY MULLEN TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHERE YOU’RE FROM ? I was born and raised in East Bakersfield California, one of the rougher sides of Bakersfield but I managed to learn a lot and make it through.
niques and skills you need to engrave is an entirely different monster!! Metal doesn’t work like skin I found out, but I can definitely say learning to tattoo first helped me out tremendously in the world of engraving on the art side of it.
DID GROWING UP IN A TOUGH PLACE LIKE THAT GIVE YOU THE DETERMINATION TO WORK HARD AND PROVIDE YOUR FAMILY A BETTER LIFE? Of course. Going through the battles and the life struggles of being raised on the rougher side of town, allowed me to experience a whole lot at a very young age. This forced me to grow up very quick. I just knew that what I experienced as a kid, I never wanted for myself and my family as an adult. So I worked hard to improve myself and my skills, which lead to a much better life.d also myself, which lead to a much better life.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO ENGRAVING FIREARMS? I’ve always had a passion for firearms since I was young. I’ve also been an artist my whole life and a tattoo artist for almost 17 years now, so what better way to combine both passions into one? Then I got connected with a good brother of mine named Hernan. He laced me up with enough knowledge to get me on my feet and get the ball rolling in engraving and I am forever grateful for that.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO TATTOOING? I started when I was 14 years old, working on it as a little street kid. It helped me because I would just channel all my emotion into art on the skin. HOW HAS TATTOOING HELPED WITH MY ENGRAVING PROJECTS? Tattooing has helped with my engraving skills because its given me the imagination and vision to create art on bare metal. I first thought engraving would be very similar to tattooing, but the tech-
and I completely respect them to the fullest. Our Second Amendment right has given me and all of us the power to be passionate about our firearms. We should always protect that right. YOU HAVE A NEW LITTLE ONE ON THE WAY. ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO HIM FOLLOWING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? Yes, a baby boy on the way, Joseph Gunner Mullen. Yes, of course. I am definitely looking forward to my little man following in my footsteps and taking my legacy forward. I can’t wait till he arrives so I can give him all the love and share with him everything I know. God has blessed me with him so I will do right by the Lord and raise him as He has guided me to do.
HOW MANY FIREARMS DO YOU CURRENTLY HOLD IN YOUR ARSENAL? Sorry, I never let anyone know exactly how much firepower I’m holding. Let’s just say I have enough to protect my family.
YOUR BUSINESS IS CALLED, ‘SELF IMAGE’. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE BEAUTY SIDE OF THE BUSINESS? The Beauty half of the business is run by my beautiful lady Yeleina. She’s been working in the beauty industry for a while now and has a lot of new anti-aging products and procedures that many women have used to improve their confidence and self image. She’s doing some amazing work.
SO DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A COLLECTOR OR MORE OF AN AFICIONADO? I can’t really say I consider myself an aficionado, but I can say I am very passionate about firearms
WHERE CAN WE FIND SELF IMAGE ONLINE? You can find Self Image online on Instagram username @inkbyjoeymullen and @selfimagebodyartstudio
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST FIREARM? Mine was a .22 caliber Ruger Mark II.

The Kaz can be easily be converted over to semi-auto action should you decide to move to a state that allows it. However be advised, it cannot be returned to the single-shot platform once converted. Master gunsmith, Jan-Steven Merson over at Great Dane AK Armory informs us that the gas port has not been drilled on these California model AK pistol variants. Once the gun owner is safely in a state where this type of semi-auto pistol is legal, they can mail their firearm back to Great Dane WITHOUT the bolt and carrier installed please, and the ace gunsmiths will convert it over to a gas operated semi-automatic at no charge to the customer.

TELL US, WHAT MADE YOU PICK UP THIS AWESOME JANZ .357? Thirteen years ago, I read a book detailing high-end small arms. There was a one page summary of the Janz revolver in it. In 2015 I went to the SHOT Show and met Till Hezel at the Janz revolver booth. He put on a demonstration of the pistol’s options, changing the barrels and calibers right there in the booth. All of his custom revolvers looked phenomenal. The
fit, finish, and build quality were something I hadn’t seen previously and I’ve fired and carried many Smith and Wesson revolvers in competition, recreation, and in my work as a law enforcement officer for two decades, so I’m quite familiar with wheel guns. Additionally, I learned a great deal from our last department armorer, who specialized in revolvers before his retirement.
HOW MANY ROUNDS HAVE BEEN PUT DOWN THE BARREL? When my order arrived my FFL dealer sent me photos with the caption: “I don’t think my camera is good enough to convey how nice a handgun this is.” I picked the revolver up that week and was blown away! It was such a work of art. The gun comes with a beautiful wood paneled locking carrying case which includes a screwdriver with two different bits for sight and trig-
ger adjustments. The bits are an exact fit for the gun. I immediately went to my local gun club and put 400 rounds of .38 special through the gun. ANY SPECIAL MODIFICATIONS DONE SINCE YOU FIRST PURCHASED IT? I have not made any modifications to the gun, it simply does not need any. The handgun’s trigger is adjustable independent of the

mainspring and it has a handy gauge on the right side which tells you roughly where you’re at in terms of trigger pull in pounds. There’s nothing more I could want from this gun. IF SOMEONE WERE TO OFFER YOU A DOLLAR AMOUNT FOR THIS, WHAT WOULD THAT NUMBER BE? If someone offered me a dollar amount for the gun I would simply
say no. When I purchased the gun, Till at Janz told me, “You’re going to be the only person who has this revolver in the blue plasma finish.” It truly is one of a kind and not something I would ever part with. OTHER SPECIAL PIECES IN THE FUTURE? I don’t have any plans to purchase another Janz revolver. I am very happy with this one. My next purchase will probably be a left-handed Blaser R8 rifle, but that’s another story for another time. FINAL THOUGHTS? The Janz is an incredible revolver. Although it carries an incredible

LEAVING HIS MARK ON LOWRIDERS, FIREARMS AND BEYOND TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT HERNAN, THE FAMILY MAN, THE ENGRAVER AND THE ENTREPRENEUR? I have been engraving for 21 years (18 years self-employed). Still learning everyday there’s always something new in the industry. At Engrave It, we provide not only Hand Engraving but also Laser Engraving to all our customers. I am very fortunate & thankful for the continued support of my wife & 2 sons. We as a business will keep expanding every year. WAS IT HARD STARTING OUT? Yes, it was hard starting out because I was self -taught and no one wanted to share any information on how to engrave. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IN THE ENGRAVING WORLD? I have received the “Proclamation” Award from the City of Odessa Texas, along with multiple “Outstanding Engraving” awards at many car shows from my work on cars, bikes & motorcycles.
WORDS: STAFF PHOTOS: DONNY DOQUISA / COURTESY HERNAN D’AIOLA
WHEN DID YOU GET INTO ENGRAVING FIREARMS? I started engraving on firearms back in 2002. WHAT TYPES OF ENGRAVING DO YOU DO? I engrave any style the customer requests. TELL US ABOUT THE FIRST GUN YOU ENGRAVED AND WHAT WAS IT? A blued Colt 1911 semi-auto pistol. DOES ENGRAVING ON FIREARMS NEED A DIFFERENT APPROACH AS OPPOSED TO CAR PARTS? Way more detail goes into firearm engraving in my opinion. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS TO EXPAND INTO THE FIREARMS WORLD? I want to show people that you don’t have to be stuck in the old ways of thinking and they can stand out from the typical engraving styles that have been around for over a century.

THIS .44 CAL DESERT EAGLE HAS MORE TO IT THEN JUST GOOD LOOKS TELL US HOW F#CK FAKE .44 CAME TO BE? My father purchased a DE .44 Mag in Gold along with a lifetime membership to the NRA for me on my 16th birthday. Seventeen years later when he passed, there was confusion as to whom the pistol belonged to (was still in my fathers house) Rather than start a feud or argue over a dead mans material I decided to take the matter into my own hands. Purhcased a “Black DE.44Mag” (Gold is not California Compliant) This is where I turned to my friend Hernan at Engrave it. Rather than just do the gold plating, I decided to have it fully hand engraved make the pistol a tribute to my late father.
HOW MANY ROUNDS HAVE BEEN PUT DOWN RANGE WITH THIS .44? As of now zero but I am reloading ten rounds with his ashes. I will fire it ONE TIME only sending a piece of him alongside the bullet. The .44 pistol will then get mounted and hung with the remaining nine rounds and his ashes still in the magazine. ANY SPECIAL MODIFICATIONS DONE OTHER THAN PLATING AND THE ENGRAVING? It was torn completely down and stripped to bare metal. Engraved then Gold/Chrome Plated. The grip is hand made walnut grip from Turkey.
IF SOMEONE WERE TO OFFER YOU A DOLLAR AMOUNT FOR THIS, WHAT WOULD THAT NUMBER BE? I can not put a price tag on it . ANY SHOUT OUTS, LAST WORDS? MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT to my brother Hernan. I am forever grateful for bringing my vision to life. My father would be very proud. BUILDING AK DREAMS JAN-STEVEN MERSON OF GREAT DANE AK ARMORY SHOOTS IT STRAIGHT ON BUILDING CALIFORNIA AK47’S WORDS: STAFF PHOTOS: DONNY DOQUISA
MY NAME IS Jan-Steven Merson. I’m a retired California state peace officer and retired full-time gunsmith. After selling my gunsmith shop, I decided to build custom AK47s. The Kalashnikov variants are one of the most used and copied rifles in the world. I personally build each AK47 myself, one at a time, giving each one my personal undivided attention. This is why I can offer an unconditional lifetime warranty. All my AK47’s have this lifetime unconditional warranty plus include a one-year maintenance, deep clean, tune and test fire. This allows the customer more range time out having fun with his rifle instead of dealing with problems he’d encounter with a used or off the shelf rifle. I can do almost any design or
upgrades the customer wants and can add custom finishes to the rifle such as 24kt gold plating or whatever you want. I can also custom build an AK74 rifle, however those AKs are in high demand and parts are scarce for them right now. The name and logo for Great Dane Armory is based on the passion my wife and I have for these dogs. We’re both animal lovers and big believers in rescue and adoption. For the last 37 years we have rescued primarily Great Danes. I would never say we own them, they’ve really become our family members. The picture on the logo of the white Great Dane was my boy, Rascals. We named him after the dog, Petey from the old TV show, The Little Rascals. If you’re interested in building your own AK variant, I always say
there are three things to remember if you’re going to do it yourself: Research, Research, Research. If you do not know what you’re doing, you can injure yourself or others, maybe even fatally. You will also need to buy all the tools necessary to complete the build the correct way. That’s big money to invest if you’re only planning on building one rifle. If you do not have the tools needed or the funds to buy them, then check with your local gun groups and find a ‘Build Party’. I see them all over or call me for free advice. I think what sets me apart from the others in this market is that I build my AKs one at a time. The build starts when the customer orders it and I don’t stop till its finished and in the customer’s hands. Because of that, as you can
imagine, I am very busy, even with part-time assistance. My builds are a little more expensive than buying at a dealer or online. I use only quality parts, manufactured here in the US. For parts not available here, the kits and parts are never used, I only buy them new, straight off the assembly line from the country of origin, usually Romania or Hungary. My rifles also have a lifetime unconditional warranty. You won’t find that online.

PINNED AND HOW DID PATRIOT PIN GET STARTED? When the new “Gunmaggedon” Laws passed in 2016, a buddy and I were watching videos on what was required to keep your AR’s legal in California. We both agreed that going featureless wasn’t an option, we ordered up an AR MagLock to see how we could improve on the ergonomics and speed of the process. Once installed, we just started trying to figure out where we could mount a lever system to pull the rear pin easily. After multiple 3D printed prototypes, we had one that worked, and worked really well. We immediately agreed to start the company and get a patent on it ASAP. Fast forward to 2020, and we have expanded our product line, and continue to provide the best combination of parts available for Fixed Magazine AR’s WHAT SETS PATRIOT PIN APART FROM OTHER SYSTEMS? Two things really make us stand out compared to the competition. One, we make all of our pins out of Delrin. Delrin is a self-lubricating polymer that is stronger than aluminum. Everybody gives you some kind of metal pin, usually steel. Steel pins going in and out of your aluminum receiver, now every 10 rounds, will start wearing out your receiver faster than you think. During our initial prototyping

THE PATRIOT PIN MAKES IT SUPER EASY TO DISASSEMBLE YOUR AR GUNSMITH OR CAN AN INDIVIDUAL WHO IS MECHANICALLY INCLINED GET THE JOB DONE? The Patriot Pin and AR MagLock are both very easy to install, and we offer the necessary tools for anybody to do it. Unlike other systems out there, you don’t have to drill or modify your weapon at all, no complicated shims or extra finicky springs to adjust, you can install the whole system in 10-30 minutes, depending on your experience. The best part about using the AR MagLock is that you get to keep your bolt catch, and it is very easy to remove in the case that you move out of state or the laws change.
before we started using Delrin, we ruined a lower receiver with steel pins. Since then, for three and a half years, and tens of thousands of cycles later, our Delrin pins have never worn out our receivers at all.
loops around your forward assist. This limits the travel of the upper from flopping open, but doesn’t require any tools or hardly any effort to switch between partial and full disassembly.
The second thing that makes our product unique is that our system is tactically advantageous on any rifle, California compliant or not. The Patriot Pin makes it super easy to disassemble your AR, whether it’s for cleaning, storage, changing uppers, or clearing a jam. It also adds other features like an anti-rotating castle nut, QD mount, and detent access, all of which are good features on any rifle, in any state. And when needed, we include a rubber limiter strap that
WILL THIS FIT ON ALL AR15 PLATFORMS? The Patriot Pin mounts over your buffer tube, so you will need to have a traditional buffer tube and castle nut. It will not work on setups that have a fixed stock, like an A2 stock. For this, we recommend our Delta Pin. Other than that, it will fit any standard AR-15, and bolts on without any kind of modification. We also just released our AR-10 and VR-80 Patriot Pins. FOR THE INSTALL, DO YOU RECOMMEND A
YOU’VE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR A WHILE NOW, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED? When we started, we were not in the gun industry, and didn’t realize how hard it can actually be to sell any kind of gun part online. HAS THE CURRENT CALIFORNIA LEGAL LANDSCAPE AFFECTED BUSINESS? When it comes to gun laws in California, everybody knows they can be very volatile. This has forced us to become creative in the products we offer. We didn’t want to make a bunch of products where their only purpose was being California compliant, because if the laws change, they could become obsolete immediately. Instead, we design all of our products, especially the Patriot Pin 2.0, to be beneficial outside of the laws, but still being the best solution to follow the laws.
WHERE CAN WE FIND PATRIOT PIN PRODUCTS CURRENTLY? The best place to find all of our products is on our website, www.patriot-pin. com but we are also in many brick and mortar stores, if you don’t see us, ask them to carry our products! WHAT ARE PATRIOT PINS PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? We are committed to offer the best solution for fixed magazine setups, while still offering products outside the realm of California compliance. We will continue to make it as easy as possible for law-abiding citizens to still enjoy shooting their AR’s, and we will not stop innovating and coming out with new products to help with that. ANY TOP SECRET PROJECTS COMING UP YOU CAN TIP US OFF TO? Our biggest projects we’ve been working on, and are releasing 2020, are Patriot Pins for both the AR-10 and the new VR-80 shotgun. We are very excited to expand our line of products to these platforms. FINAL THOUGHTS? Most people have already done something to their rifles to make them CA compliant. We hear all the time how people are unhappy with the products they got for some reason or another, and they switch to the Patriot Pin setup, and couldn’t be happier. This is what drives us to continue to offer and innovate the best Fixed Magazine setups available. Thank you for all of your support!

COMPMAG
KEEPIN’ IT LEGAL FUNCTION MEETS BAD ASS DESIGN
HOW DID COMPMAG COME TO LIFE? CompMag was founded in 2017 in response to the California state laws regarding firearms. In 2017 the laws had changed in California. SB 880 and AB1135 passed. There were a few solutions out there, but they were very model specific, and many required modifications to your firearm or breaking your action to reload. We set out to find a solution that could work across many different types and styles of “assault weapons” and would still allow for the normal operation of your firearm. The one thing in common with most of these firearms that would make them “California
compliant” was to give them a fixed magazine. I went to work... Countless designs were made, multiple patents were applied for, lawyers were consulted, manufacturers were interviewed, and finally, in late 2017, our first product came out. The AR-15 CompMag. The CompMag is the first of its kind. It’s a 10 round, fixed, side loadable magazine, made entirely in California U.S.A. It can be loaded without removing it from your firearm, resulting in a fixed magazine solution that is easy to use. It is designed to last, and it is made with the best materials available. We are very proud of our first CompMag and since then
have released an AK-47 and an AR-10 version. CompMag currently has six patents pending for our designs and we are constantly striving to innovate and come out with new models. WHAT SETS COMPMAG APART FROM OTHER SYSTEMS OUT THERE? The CompMag is the ultimate fixed magazine solution for your firearm. Even though the magazine is fixed into the lower receiver, it still allows your firearm to be very easy to use. The CompMag has an internal locking mechanism that locks the magazine into your firearm, making your firearm California legal. Installation is very simple.
It can also be easily removed by opening the action and releasing the CompMag. This allows you to have your fully functional firearm back. This is useful if you are going out of state to shoot, or if you live in a state other than California. Having a fixed magazine allows you to retain all the other features that we love: a pistol grip, a retractable stock, a forward grip, a thumbhole stock, and a flash suppressor. The CompMag can also be used in other restrictive states besides California. WILL THIS FIT ON ALL AR15/AK PLATFORMS? The AR-15 CompMag is compatible with AR-15 type lowers that have a
standard profile magazine well (M4,M16, AR-15). There are certain firearm lowers that do not have a standard mag well such as Seekins SP225, Sharps Bros, HKMR, and Spike’s Jack. These have a downward extended magazine well which will interfere with the side loading door. The AR-15 CompMag is also compatible with many other firearms that accept a STANAG magazine including the SCAR 16s, CZ BREN, SIG 556, and the Bushmaster ACR. The AR-15 CompMag is compatible with .223, 5.56, .300ACC Blackout, and .277 Wolverine Ammunition. The AK-47 CompMag is Compatible with AK- 47 firearms that accept a

double stacked magazine. It comes with everything you need to install it into a stamped receiver. In milled receivers, you must use the milled receiver locking plate (available on our site). The AK-47 is compatible with 7.62x29 ammunition. The AR-10 CompMag is DPMS/SR25 compatible. Like the AR-15 version, it must be used in a standard mag well. It is compatible with 7.62x51, .308, and 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition. FOR THE INSTALL, DO YOU RECOMMEND A GUNSMITH OR CAN SOMEONE MECHANICALLY INCLINED GET THIS UP AND RUNNING ON THEIR RIFLE? Anyone can install a CompMag. There is just one screw to deal with and no modifications to your firearm are necessary. There are instructions included with your CompMag, also there are installation videos on our website.

WORDS: STAFF PHOTOS: DONNY DOQUISA
THE MAG HAS A GREAT AESTHETIC TO IT, LOOKS MEAN AND CLEAN! DOES IT WORK AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS? Thank you. We have put a lot of time and effort into making a product that people would actually like using. It is a new type of magazine, and loads differently than a regular mag. Once people get acquainted with how it works, they actually enjoy it. WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS TO COMPMAG BEING INSTALLED ON SOMEONES RIFLE? There are many benefits to using the CompMag for California Compliance: The CompMag allows you to keep your features you love on your rifle. (pistol grip, forward grip, retractable stock, and flash hider). There is no need to “break your action” or deviate from the normal operation of your firearm to reload.
The CompMag loads easier than a standard magazine. There is no heavy spring to push each round against. It is very easy to install. No special skills required. It’s easily reversible, should you decide to shoot outside of California (or in case the S#*t hits the fan). The CompMag has a built-in round counter which indicates exactly how many rounds are left in your firearm, including what’s in your chamber. The CompMag also allows for easy clearing of type 3 malfunctions (such as double feeds). There are a few drawbacks to using the CompMag. The first drawback is the fact that we have to use a Compliance device at all! It makes the firearm larger to store since the magazine must always be attached. You cannot preload and shoot multiple magazines in rapid succession. IF A CUSTOMER HAS TROUBLE INSTALLING IT, CAN THEY GIVE YOU A RING TO GET HELP? We have videos posted on our site to aid in installation as well as a contact page to contact us should you require help. ANY PLANS FOR A COMPMAG AR15 FOR 2020? We have just updated our AR-15 CompMag and released our AR-10 version. We will be working on a new model this year, but I am hesitant to say which one, as our plans may change. WE SEE YOU JUST LAUNCHED AN AR10 VERSION, WHEN CAN PEOPLE EXPECT TO GET THEIR HANDS ON ONE AND WHERE? As of now the AR-10 CompMag is available on our website www.compmag.net and will soon be available at many retailers that carry our products.

KRAV MAGA
DISARM 101
WORDS: STAFF PHOTOS: DONNY DOQUISA
KRAVA MAGA XD’S TECHNIQUE FOR A DISARM Being threatened with a gun is no joke. If everything else fails (avoidance and negotiation) you need to act swiftly and decisively to stay alive. A primal response will be to use the hand closest to the enemy’s weapon to turn the pistol away from you. Typically your left hand will be the closest to a right-handed opponent. (Most people are right-handed) This is the correct move but it must be part of the following combination: Slap the gun away to the left of your center mass, while simultaneously moving your
body in the opposite direction, to the right of your opponent . Use the momentum during this maneuver to launch a massive attack on your opponent’s throat, nose or chin to cause a debilitating injury with your free hand. After that you must focus on the weapon. Take control of the weapon to disarm your attacker. Once disarmed the threat is NOT over. Move away quickly, get distance, check your surroundings for other threats, clear the weapon (if you are trained) and seek help.
KRAVMAGAXD.COM INSTAGRAM @KRAVMAGAXD FACEBOOK / KRAVMAGAXD
Step 1 Using your left hand (or the closest hand) redirect the pistol away from you while simultaneously moving your body the opposite direction to get the maximum amount of distance away from the pistol.
Step 2 Strike the bad guy with the other hand to the throat to chin while still moving out of his immediate line of fire.
Step 3 Establish control of the weapon with both hands. If needed, use kicks to the attackers groin or knees to soften them up.
KRAVA MAGA XD 1635 SUPERIOR AVE, COSTA MESA, CA 92627 714.677.2841
Step 4 Once you’ve gained control of the weapon, disarm by taking a big step away from the attacker and yanking the pistol (pointing the barrel away from you) to your hip. This must be one strong, fast action, similar to pull-starting a lawn mower or swinging a baseball bat, to ensure the pistol is removed from their hand.
