How can you stand out on the information highway? No two lives are alike. Nor two deaths alike.

According to PEW Research in 2013, 73 percent of online adults use social media. 90 percent of those ages 18 to 29 use social networking sites. The next generation of customers and current customers are having conversations about your business, the good, bad or ugly. Are you listening?

According to Entreprenuer.com, there are “roughly 1.3 million small and medium-sized businesses in North America,” and social media is now vital to their success. According to a TNS (Taylor Nelson Sofres) survey, 81 percent use social media to drive growth and another 9 percent strive to use social media in the future. So many businesses say, “I don’t have time,” but with social media management dashboards like Hootsuite, you make the time, manage and maintain an active presence on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and more from one site. How are small businesses using it? Some use it for marketing, education and business insights. Customers mainly use it for news, testimonials and reviews. They want to hear from the staff, the business experts and from fellow customers. Whether or not you have an online presence, customers are there having conversations about you every day. Social Media raises awareness and builds brands. Businesses use images, quotes and facts to create engagement and interaction with fans and customers. Some businesses and organizations tease customers with questions and prizes, but always remember that a picture is worth 1,000 words and catches the attention of users in the crowded world of social media. Ask and you shall receive. Encourage sharing, response, likes and more to generate traffic to your pages. Ellen DeGeneres crashed twitter with a simple picture and a request to retweet during the Academy Awards. You too can bring a crowd. Videos are another great way to grab attention, but do make sure it’s short and to the point, capturing their complete attention. Don’t “blowup” their newsfeeds with posts, but always try to at least post once a day. It’s easier to find time if you develop a calendar of ideas for posting. On Mondays, share the deals for the week; Tuesdays, share photos. On Wednesdays, write a blog, and so on… There are many free and easy options for communicating to your public, directly to those who want to see and hear what you have to share.

Technology in Marketing Communicating with Customers

Bear & Son Cutlery “As an older person, I was not sure how to use it. It wasn’t familiar to me, but I knew it was important. I had someone do it for me, and I checked it off the list,” says Cindy Young, owner of Java Jolt about online marketing. She goes on to say, “It wasn’t something I thought would make or break us because, with everything thrown at us, it’s hard to know what will and won’t work.” About three years ago, Cindy had two groups of Jacksonville State students conduct a PR Audit for Java Jolt, and one group convinced her “it was big and the way to go.” “They gave me the bones, and my current staff brought it to life,” says Cindy. Manager Kimberly Water’s motto is “Always be posting.” “Nothing was really being posted, so we started with Facebook, and then, created an instagram,” says Lauren Lewis, chef at Java Jolt. “Food pictures are more inviting than words. You can say we have chocolate cake or show them a picture of a three-layer chocolate cake covered in icing,” adds Lauren. Java Jolt posts on social media as it comes, mostly from the convenience of their smart phones. With scheduling, they conducted observations and research, deciding to post mostly during “pre-lunch,” to get people thinking about coming by later. “It’s important to not be too complex, keep it simple so people won’t scroll past it,” says Cindy. “We’ve recently started tweeting and realize we’re interacting more personally with our customers, retweeting and serving free drinks to those involved in sharing,” says Kimberly. “It’s important to be clever, funny and visually appealing,” says Cindy. “We want to make it human. I did a blog on banana bread, the smell coming from the oven that reminded of my grandmother. It was a more personal side. It’s about human reaction, making it personal and showing you care,” says Lauren. “Customers have that connection with her. You gain their trust. These are people we know,” states Cindy. “You can tell a difference when there is a post and traffic is heavy, whether they like it or not,” says Kimberly. “You have to think from the customers’ standpoint. With the website, we wanted it to look yummy, with big, close, yummy pictures with the melted cheese. We bring them to the menu, and it links them to the blog. It’s informal, something they can relate to,” says Graham Lewis, website designer and photographer. “It’s our real food. We don’t want our customers to see something and be disappointed because it’s not how it appeared,” states Cindy. Technology to Stay Competitive: Automation and Effectiveness Bear and Son Cutlery, with a rich tradition of knife making, is fully self-contained. Some companies rely on parts from other suppliers and put their names on the product. Everything at Bear & Son is done in-house, from building blanking dies to heat treating, grinding and assembly. To make it more effective, they’ve incorporated technology into tooling and cutting. Bear and Son utilizes EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) to take care of tooling, water cutting with CNC (Computer Numerical Control) to cut out blades and more, CNC grinders to grind blades, CNC backsanders for knife parts and lasers for premium work and burning power coating. “Everything else is handwork. Robotics are expensive, and we haven’t bit that off yet,” says Ken Griffey, President of Bear & Son Cutlery. All designs and drawings are on CAD (Computer Aided Design), and they use CNC Mills for aluminum handles. They also have online sales for full retail and for people to find out more information. “We were hesitant at first, but it really is a good selling tool for our more than 300 skews,” says Ken. Their database to track knives and routing is a custom

system, built in-house. Ken says, “There wasn’t one in existence that would work for a business of our size, so we developed software in-house.” Their ongoing commitment is to make knives in America and make them affordable. Their website reads, “We want everyone to be able to afford what we are proud to make!” Bear & Son Cutlery, Inc. 1111 Bear Blvd SW Jacksonville, AL 36265 (256) 435-2227 www.bearandsoncutlery.com

Technology isn’t just websites, email and social media. It’s databases, software, robotics and training - all helping manage data, track effectiveness, automate processes and driving customer service. LOVE LOCAL! Choose Calhoun! According to Time magazine, the average American shopper spends more than $700 on holiday gifts and purchases. Think of the funds generated if we switched just 5 percent of the money we spent elsewhere and bought locally. It would generate more than $2 million each year in new sales tax revenue. Thank you for choosing Calhoun! LOVE LOCAL! Choose Calhoun! Keep our local small businesses in mind because each purchase locally makes an impact on our schools, public services and more. Money spent here stays here, recalculating in our community, expanding jobs and business opportunities. Small businesses are the backbone of our community, and many local businesses are also those who fund and support local non-profit and community organizations that serve our area. Think of those who sponsor the t-ball teams, that golf tournament or the community event down the street. While we are often drawn to the lowest price, we overlook the convenience and customer service provided by our neighbors. Calhoun County is a great place to live, work and visit. Thank you for Shopping Local!

Opportunities for involvement

Green Business

The Community Improvement Committee (CIC) strives to improve our community by reducing our environmental footprint and promoting beauty in the outside world of our businesses and industries. Through our Green Business Program, businesses complete a simple application to see just how “Green” their practices are in their offices and workplace. Each question is worth a certain amount of points, previously determined by the CIC. Once the application is filled out and turned back in to the Chamber, it is submitted for review. Certified Green Businesses receive recognition and a digital version of the Green Business Certification logo to be used at the business’ discretion. The certification will be good for a year starting at the date of approval.

This program gives businesses, industries and organizations the chance to show the community that they care about the future of our children, planet and Calhoun County. It is a fact that small “Green” improvements can have a major impact on the environment over time, not to mention most green initiatives will save businesses money. Our hope is that when members of our community see the Green Business Certification logo they will know that this business is making a difference in more ways than one. The purpose of this program is to use the human resources, other skills and talents of our area business community to strengthen, enhance and enrich the quality of education in the 36 public schools and six private schools within our county. The adopter businesses initiate activities that encourage students, enrich their educational experiences and connect the world of work to the educational arena.
