ince 1963, the United States has declared a National Small Business Week in May to recognize the contributions of entrepreneurs and small business owners. For 14 years, the Chamber has celebrated and honored area small businesses for their contributions to the community at the Business Awards, held each May during the Chamber’s Small Business Month.
This year on May 11, we honor 21 businesses and organizations. The nominees are:

Young Entrepreneur of the Year Niky Van Hatten, Envy Salon Since 2012, Niky has served as the Master Cosmetologist and owner of eNVy Salon in Jacksonville. This trendy, full service hair salon prides itself in being staffed with educated stylists, who stay up-to-date on all trends, techniques, tools and styles. Hired stylists conduct one-on-one training with Niky, checking each haircut for accuracy, balance, and client satisfaction, and then progressing through levels of Salon Testing, State Certifications and attending education events and trade shows. Niky also requires these annual trainings of herself saying, “You can’t expect others to do what you aren’t willing to do.” Jean & Steven Ellison,The Music Box Jean and Steven founded the Music Box, a school of music, providing private instruction in violin, cello, guitar, brass, piano, acting, and more. This husband and wife duo met at Jacksonville State Univeristy in the music education undergraduate program, married at the Alumni House and pursued their Masters in Music. Now, they are very engaged in their community, serving as members of the Anniston Main Street board and organizing community events. The Music Box has evolved to offer skype video lessons and encourage students to create their own melodies and songs.
Jay Grubbs, RA-LIN and Associates, Inc. After graduating from Auburn in 2002, with a degree in Building Science, Jay Grubbs went to work for RA-LIN, and now works as the Vice President of the Alabama Division. RA-LIN is a provider of construction services, across the southeast, who believes in meeting the budget of the client, finishing jobs on schedule and maintaining the highest quality. Jay serves on several boards and is involved in many other civic organizations. Jay and RA-LIN also work with career tech schools throughout the area to recruit and develop future employees.
Non-Profit of the Year The Right Place for Housing & Support, Inc. Since 2012, the Right Place has worked with the mission to develop and manage housing programs for homeless and low income families and individuals, while offering programs which prevent homelessness or assist low income persons with special needs in securing safe, affordable housing. Their first project included the development of a duplex, providing affordable housing in Anniston, and it now houses two families. Now, they are completing their second project, with Hillside Cottages housing four individuals. RMC Foundation
Since 1977, the RMC Foundation has worked to develop relationships and financial resources necessary to support Regional Medical Center and its mission to provide quality healthcare to the people they serve. Today, this foundation continues to raise funds to support new
programs, education, equipment, technology and expansion across RMC, RMC Jacksonville, and their eleven clinic locations, including establishing the Martha Vandervoort Memorial Scholarship, providing $36,000 for two deserving Calhoun County Students. United Way of East Central Alabama Since 1954, the United Way of East Central Alabama has provided a comprehensive network of programs and initiatives to address the most pressing health and human service needs in Calhoun, Cleburne and Randolph counties. Today, United Way leverages and invests the power of donors, advocates and volunteers to address critical needs. Campaign dollars are put into work in the county in which they are raised, helping their own neighbors in need. The United Way staff also invests time and energy in supporting the community, serving on committees and boards, and participating in community events.
Emerging Small Business of the Year Daybreak Media LLC Since 2012, Daybreak Media has produced INSIGHT Magazine, On the Menu, Daybreak Print & Design, Social Media Marketing and EEDM services to maximize advertisers’ marketing efforts. These provide both online and print advertising outlets for clients. The 50th digital issue of INSIGHT was recently published, and in February, they topped 30,000 unique reads.

Hometown Parent is their fastest growing publication, and it’s free for readers, available in print and online. With their client centered networking, the staff works as ambassadors for their customers and spends much time investing and participating in the community. As readership and customers grow, offices were also moved from the Entrepreneurial Center to Leighton in Anniston. Infinity Massage Studio for Women Since 2015, Sureka Johnson has developed a massage therapy facility that specializes in pain management, chronic and acute pain, rehabilitation and therapeutic massage for women. Growing from one client to now more than 200, Infinity Massage Studio for Women continues growing every day. Sureka continues to listen to customers’ wants and needs and continues training and educating on new and upcoming trends in the field of massage therapy.
Posche Salon Since 2014, this team driven salon has worked to create the best atmosphere, best experience and best service possible. With the mission of “point of difference” in mind, the staff educated themselves, gives back to the community and works toward their set goals. Each team member focuses on the progress, works together, holds each other accountable and stays loyal to the vision of a “high service” salon. Taste of Eden Beginning as a hobby in 2015, with a request from a friend to make a cake, Karla at Taste of Eden quickly began receiving two to three cake requests a month, which evolved into one to two cake requests a week. Now, Taste of Eden brings three to six orders a weekend, with one weekend reaching twenty two requests. Karla is completely self-taught, but by trial and error, she has perfected her recipes and is now enrolled in Culinard at Virginia College in the Pastry Arts course.

April 3, the Chamber hosted the Chamber World Series Membership Drive Spring Training to kick off this month’s activities.

April 13, McDonald’s in Golden Springs celebrated the completion of their major remodel with a ribbon cutting celebration.
April 7, J. MAEB Boutique celebrated a ribbon cutting for their new location at 1931 Noble Street in Anniston. April 13, the JSU SBDC, the Entrepreneurial Center and SBA presented information to the Leadership Calhoun County for Small Business & Community Service Day, and Wig’s Wheels, Downing & Sons and Oxford Lumber hosted small business tours.
