Dear Fellow Rotarians, Rotary (Midtown) seems to have a knack of throwing interesting surprises on us on a regular basis. When I joined our club, I never thought that one day I would become its president. The year 2011 changed that line of thought. I always thought of myself as someone who likes to read and not write or edit a magazine (my school grades are a testimony to that). The year 2012 is changing that line of thought too. One year as president has only given me fond memories without any regrets. This year too, as I am sailing into uncharted waters, I know that I will have only wonderful moments that I will always cherish. This year we hope to bring a smile to your face when each ‘Midvox’ is brought out. To this end I call on all of you to please contribute something interesting and humorous that you have experienced. (I hope the smile has not vanished) Well, the new Rotary year with Rtn Jaykrishnan as our captain has started today and I’m extremely happy to see the release of this year’s first issue of ‘Midvox’. Dear Fellow Rotarians, As we Midtowners once again find ourselves at the beginning of a new rotary year, we are filled with hopes of another fruitful and funfilled term, complete with Community Projects, family get-togethers and weekly meetings. Having been a member of Rotary Club of Calicut Midtown for the past 11 years, I am truly honoured to be the one leading you through this New Year. As the club President, I shall be devoted to carrying out the objectives of Rotary through various community projects, bringing together our families by organizing family outings and short picnics and continuing the hard work carried out by my predecessors. I am positive that I can count on each of you for your support, guidance and co-operation in all the ventures of the Club this year. The American writer and business man David Weinbaum once said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The secret to a rich life is to have more beginnings than endingsâ&#x20AC;?. On that note, I request you all to join hands with our Secretary Dr.Jaikish, our board and myself in celebrating the beginning of this new year, and making it a meaningful and memorable one.

FAREWELL MESSAGE

Dear Rotary Folks, As the year 2011-12 docks to a finale, the outcome being the ushering in of a whole new group of Rotarians led by Rtns; President Jayakrishnan P, Sec Dr Jaikish Jayaraj and Treasurer Satish Kumar P Shah, gushing with enthusiasm, brimming with newer ideas and treading cautiously on the road less travelled. It was a thoroughly joyous tenure leading the (51-strong) fine band of spontaneous Rotarians, amenable to useful changes; ever so helpful in venturing out with new programmes at meetings. The Board of Directors which I had the good fortune to interact was one of high calibre, and we used to look forward to for the Board meeting to happen. Kudos to Rtn Sanal Kumar Velayudhan for commuting every time 25-odd Kms from IIM-K. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commitment. Attendance at meetings and punctuality were the watchword from Day-one. To a great degree we were successful. There were 49 meetings in all. The 38 Guestspeaker meetings that we had, had something new to offer, with topics ranging from Space Travel to Mental Exercises to Meditation to Optimal strategy to Care for Environment to Safety in High Skies to Marketing as it impacts us to Mind-music Therapy to Women in Media to Entertaining Family Get-togethers. Never a dull moment !!! So, hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s farewell from Secretary Basanth C B, Treasurer Peter Cheruvathoor and myself to YOU ALL and GOODLUCK to Team 2012-13. Sakuji Tanaka, a member of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Saitama, Japan, was the president of Rotary International for 2012-13 . For 32 years, Tanaka was president of Tanaka Company Ltd., a wholesale firm that went public in 1995 and later merged with other leading wholesalers in Japan. Currently, he serves as vice president of the Yashio City Chamber of Commerce and adviser to Arata Co. Ltd., an animal feed and pet food wholesaler. He also chaired the National Household Papers Distribution Association of Japan for eight years. Tanaka studied business at Nihon Management Daigakuin and Tokyo Management Daigakuin. A past trustee of The Rotary Foundation, Tanaka chaired the 2009 Birmingham Convention Committee. His other service to Rotary includes RI director, regional Rotary Foundation coordinator, district governor, and member of the Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force, the Permanent Fund Committee for Japan, and the Future Vision Committee. Tanaka established an endowed Rotary Peace Fellowship, and he and his wife, Kyoko, are Paul Harris Fellows, Benefactors of the Permanent Fund, and Major Donors.

Rtn T.Somasekharan hails from Cannaore. He is a textile Technologist and a Lead Assessor of Quality Systems. He was an officer with Textiles Committee, Govt. of India, for more than 25 years, having worked in various textile centres of India. He quit Government service in the year 1998 to venture into textile exporting business and currently he is the managing partner of M/s Omkar International Cannanore. He joined Rotary in 1995 and became the president of Rotary club of Cannanore in the year 2002-03.He has taken various posts in the District namely , District Chairman, GGR, GSR, Assistant Governor, Regional Secretary, District Director General and District Conference Chairman. He was an active member of Jaycees and was the Kerala State President of Jaycees International in the year 1985. He is associated with many other organizations like: Kerala Textile Export Association, North Malabar Chamber of Commerce, Malabar Cancer Care Society, Cannanore Water Conservation Society, Shanthimadom Trust, Azhikode He is married to Manorama, who was the State Chair person of Jaycerette wing, President of Inner wheel club, Cannanore and past CGR of Inner Wheel District. She is now the President Elect of Rotary club of Cannanore.They are blessed with 4 daughters, all married and settled.

Rotary International Convention Bangkok 2012

Bangkok bash This was my first experience at the RI convention after becoming a Rotarian in 2011. We started our journey from Calicut, Kerala on May 12th to Bengaluru Intl Airport. We were 13 of us in the Coach from different clubs in Calicut, Kannur and Kasargod districts. We all met for the first time and it was a really fun trip to Bengaluru Airport. We boarded the Bangkok Airways flight to Bangkok at 12:30 midnight and reached Bangkok next day morning 6:30 AM local time. As we came out of the Airport, Ratt our official tour guide was waiting with two of her staff Nicky and Tony to take us to the Bangkok Palace Hotel. We checked in the Hotel at 12:00 PM on May 13th. From our club, I had the company of Rtn DV Narayanan who is a regular to all RI convention and my best companion was Rtn Dinesh Natraj from Rotary Club of Calicut Beach.

happening and we were simply fascinated by the sheer size of the centre. Even though Bangkok is considered to be a poor country; they had left no stones unturned to make this RI convention ‘BIG’. The sheer size and the number of attendees at the conference from different parts of the world and the arrangements they had made was simply mind blowing. I saw the inaugural ceremony from the main Hall where our RI outgoing President Rtn Kalyan Banerjee delivered a relevant speech about Rotary and its core values and mission. I was able to witness the Flag ceremony of all the countries who had attended and als heard their respective National Anthems. India’s national anthem was sung last and had a thunderous response from nearly 50,000 people who were present there inside the Hall. Jai Hind The Inaugural show included some fine performance from Thai Artists. It was indeed a great experience on Day 1. Day 2 consisted of talks from different world renowned personalities out of which I was lucky to listen to Management Guru Prof Shiv Kera. Then it was time for us Rotarians for some fun in Bangkok where we went out to Budhhist Temple, City Tour, River cruise, Safari, Dolphin Show, Some shopping, delicious Thai food and of course a Traditional Thai Massage without which your trip to Thailand is never complete!!! Then we had a one night stay at Pattaya where we went to the magnificent Coral Island where the Rotarians experienced Para Sailing, Scuba Diving etcâ&#x20AC;ŚIn the evening we went for Al Cazar Musical, Russian show and went to walking Street which is a Must Go in Patttaya. The next day morning we went to see the Gem factory in Pattaya followed by a visit to 500 Acres Noong Nuch Garden. Then on our way back to the Airport, we shopped at the Tesco Lotus Super Market. We boarded our flight back to Bengaluru on May 17th and got back to Calicut on May 18th. It was indeed a memorable experience for me personally. Interesting letter written more than 100 years back...

A Letter to Railway COMPLAINT LETTER TO THE RAILWAYS IN 1909 !! Okhil Babu’s letter to the Railway department: Date: 2 - 7 - 1909 Divisional Railway Officer, Sahibgunj, “Respected Sirs , I am arrive by passenger train Ahmedpur station and my belly is too much swelling with jackfruit. I am therefore went to privy. Just I doing the nuisance that guard making whistle blow for train to go off and I am running with lotaah in one hand and dhoti in the next when I am fall over and expose all my shocking to man and female women on platform. I am got leaved at Ahmedpur station. This too much bad, if passenger go to make dung that dam guard not wait train five minutes for him. I am therefore pray your honour to make big fine on that guard for public sake. Otherwise I am making big report to papers. Your faithful Servant, Okhil Chandra Sen” Okhil Babu wrote this letter to the Sahibganj divisional railway officer in 1909. It is on display at the Railway Museum in New Delhi. It was also reproduced under the caption Travellers Tales in the Far Eastern Economic Review. Any guesses why this letter is of historic value? It led to the introduction of TOILETS in trains in India.....!!!! So no idea is stupid and should not be discarded. We should always speak up. Midvox- 2012
