LETTER TO
EDUCATORS Dear Friends of Education, The California Center for the Arts, Escondido is dedicated to offering curriculum-based arts education programs for the region. As we continue to grow our partnerships with the local school districts and the community, it is exciting to see the impact of our collaborations. Students are participating in the arts in so many ways: My Story: Literacy Through the Arts, A Taste of the Arts in school or afterschool, attending a Center Stage performance or museum exhibition here at the Center; or by presenting art in our Student Gallery or in the smART Festival. We are able to provide these programs through a commitment of the Center’s Board of Directors, the City of Escondido, and our generous donors, educators, and countless volunteers who believe as we do that the arts provide a necessary ingredient to building the whole child and creating a better world. Our Museum and Education team is proud of the work we do together. Please mark your calendars for Educators’ Night Out on October 4, 2017, for a lovely evening hosted by us in the Museum where we can meet each other and continue on the path of Learning Together! All the best,
Leah Goodwin Director of Museum and Education

EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAMS The Center is proud to partner with local school districts to provide curriculum-rich arts outreach programs. We currently offer four unique programs.
GRADES 4-5
MY STORY: LITERACY THROUGH THE ARTS
My Story is a unique program that combines arts disciplines with core subject academic learning by sending teaching artists to fourth and fifth grade classrooms. The fourth grade curriculum brings California history to life. Students study theater and acting, which develop strong speaking and listening skills. The fifth grade classes use digital photography to tell a story and create written narratives that connect their photos with emotions, perspective, and elements of design, while sharpening language arts skills.
GRADES 2-3
JEAN WILL STRINGS
Named after its generous donor, Jean Will, this program provides students with a loaned violin, viola, or cello and takes them along a path of classical music development. Held at Conway School and the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, the program is open to second and third graders enrolled or homeschooled in Escondido. The young musicians attend a weekly one-hour small group lesson, as well as a weekly one and a half hour group lesson. Students perform on stage throughout the year.
GRADES K-8
TASTE OF THE ARTS
Art, music, dance, and drama come alive in the classroom in this four session experiential program. Sign up to have a Center for the Arts Teaching Artist come to the classroom, either during the school day or after school. All of the supplies will be provided during the one-hour hands-on arts activity. Four one-hour sessions will be provided in a classroom with no more than 35 students, for a flat fee of $500.00 per classroom.
VISUAL THINKING STRATEGIES GRADES K-12
Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) uses art to teach critical thinking, communication, and visual literacy skills to young people. VTS uses skilled facilitation of visual art discussion. Aesthetic development is stimulated by three things: looking at art of increasing complexity, responding to developmentally-based questions, and participating in group discussions that are carefully facilitated by educators. The Center offers VTS in the classroom as a fee based program. Contact us at (760) 839-6313 or museum@artcenter.org for more information.
FOR MORE INFORMATION ON PARTICIPATING IN THESE PROGRAMS, CONTACT US AT (760) 839-6313 OR AT EDUCATION@ARTCENTER.ORG. 6 // California Center for the Arts, Escondido
ARTS DISCOVERY FIELD TRIPS Engage your students’ creativity in the visual and performing arts disciplines with Arts Discovery Field Trips. All opportunities can be customized to the classroom’s current curriculum, and incorporates both Common Core and Visual and Performing Arts State Standards. The Center offers field trip opportunities for students of all ages (Tuesday-Friday). For more information, contact us at (760) 839-6313 or at education@artcenter.org.
