PERFORMANCES FOR YOUTH Introduce students to a live theater performance through the Center’s curriculum-enhancing performing arts series. This performance series spans a variety of curriculum subjects including history, science, literature, music, dance, and world culture. Each performance is accompanied by a study guide and genre-specific activities that connect to both Common Core English Language Arts Standards and California State Curriculum Standards. Jacque Nunez “Journeys to the Past” Friday, November 4, 2016, 9:30am and 11:30am Center Theater | Recommended Grades K-8 “Journeys to the Past” takes students on a journey into the lifestyle of the Acjachemen Nation, which flourished in Southern California hundreds of years before Father Serra. Learn about the past and present culture of California Indians through stories, songs, dances, indigenous tools, instruments, games, and clothing. Students leave with a wonderful understanding of what it means to be "keepers of the earth” through this program designed for all the senses.
The PGK Dance Project “Celebrating Joy and Light” Tuesday, December 6, 2016, 9:30am and 11:30am Center Theater | Recommended Grades 4-12 The PGK Dance Project features a fun array of “Mashup” holiday classics performed through exciting choreography that highlights contemporary and modern dance as well as tap dance. The program features two interactive components where audience members will become a part of the performance. In “Celebrating Joy and Light,” the award winning PGK Dance Project celebrates the diversity and commonality shared between cultures while presenting dance and music in innovative and unexpected ways.

David Novak “The Storyteller’s Fire” Tuesday, January 24, 2017, 9:30am and 11:30am Center Theater | Recommended Grades K-6 The “Storyteller’s Fire” enlightens students on Greek mythology while addressing Essential Standards in Theatre Arts and Common Core Standards for English Language Arts. Students also discover core concepts in science as they explore the natural world for ancient patterns that create new stories. Novak’s approach is highly interactive as he uses storytelling to develop emotional intelligence, pattern recognition, creative problem solving, cultural awareness, and empathy for others. Black Violin Thursday, February 2, 2017, 11:30am Concert Hall, $6 per ticket | Recommended Grades 3-12 The sounds of classical violin and hip-hop combine to create the musical phenomenon Black Violin. Their one of a kind sound is sought after by hit recording artists. The duo of Kev Marcus and Wil Baptiste come to the Center Stage series to share their signature sound as they challenge stereotypes. They will inspire us with their technique and style through music. La Jolla Playhouse’s 2017 POP Tour “SUPER SHINY SHOPPY SARA” Tuesday, February 28, 2017, 9:30am and 11:30am Center Theater | Recommended Grades 2-6 Sara Smith is an excellent storyteller and a pretty good older sister. Still, her life is nothing compared to the glamorous world of her idol, @ShoppyGoddess – a teenage fashion mogul and media star. Sara longs to escape into @ShoppyGoddess’ fabulous world of online photos, but when a magical bubble bath transports Sara right into @ShoppyGoddess’s pool, she discovers that having a super shiny life may not be so perfect after all. Written by Wesley Middleton and directed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg.
Everything Fitz – The Fitzgerald Family “Canadian Fiddling and Step Dancing... Keeping Tradition Alive!” Friday, March 17, 2016, 9:30am and 11:30am Center Theater | Recommended Grades K-8 The Fitzgerald family takes you on an exciting journey of music and dance styles that evolved from Irish and French immigrants in the 1800s, as well as American tap dancers. The Fitzgerald Family shares their heritage through a unique performance of Irish jigs and reels, French Canadian step dancing, and more modern styles that have evolved in the last decade. Razzle Bam Boom “All That Trash” Tuesday, April 4, 2017, 9:30am and 11:30am Center Theater | Recommended Grades K-5 With the goal of fostering student environmental citizenship, “All That Trash” teaches children different ways to responsibly conserve our environment’s natural resources. Through humor, song, and audience participation, this fun and engaging performance allows students to discover the many reasons why it is wise to reduce, reuse, and recycle. PASACAT “The Philippines Through Dance & Music” Tuesday, May 2, 2017, 9:30am and 11:30am Center Theater | Recommended Grades 3-12 Discover the rich diversity of Filipino history with its Chinese, Spanish, and Asian influences. PASACAT preserves traditionally based folk and indigenous culture through eight Philippine dances. The performance includes an interactive dance session where participants will learn the bamboo dance, “Tinikling.” The stage comes to life with colorful costumes, intricate dances, and lively music.

Arts Discovery Students will explore and appreciate art and culture in a docent-led tour of one of our exciting museum exhibitions. Add on a 50-minute art lesson exploring exhibition related techniques such as drawing, painting, printmaking, or sculpture.
DANCE
ART
The Center offers field trip opportunities for students of all ages! Engage your students’ creativity in the visual and performing arts disciplines with Art Discovery Field Trips. All opportunities can be customized to your classroom’s curriculum, and will incorporate both Common Core, as well as Visual and Performing Arts State Standards. Students will explore various theater techniques, including character building, improvisation, dialogue, set design, and story-to-stage adaptation. Add on a 50-minute backstage theater tour (subject to theater availability), where students can take a closer look at lighting, audio, and stage setup.
Students will learn about rhythm, tone, dynamics, and tempo through a hands-on music exercise. Through the power of collaboration, even first-timers will be making music after this one-hour lesson! Age-appropriate instruments will be provided.

PRICING Art, dance, drama, and music activities are $4 per student, with a 12 person minimum. Museum and backstage theater tours for grades K-12 are $35 per class for up to 35 students. Additional charges may be applied for a larger group.

Creative expression will be encouraged through a variety of dance activities. Students will explore the art of music-infused movement and become acquainted with fundamental dance movements and terminology.
ADULT GROUPS Continue your arts education with a tour of our museum exhibition, behind the scenes theater tour, or art workshop! Adult rates apply ($5-$8).

My Story: Literacy through the Arts
Grades 4-5
My Story is a unique program that combines art disciplines with core subject academic learning by sending teaching artists to fourth and fifth grade classrooms. The fourth grade curriculum brings California history to life using theater and acting, which develops strong speaking and listening skills. The fifth grade classes use digital photography to tell a story and create written narratives that connect their photos with emotions, perspective, and elements of design while sharpening language arts skills.
Jean Will Strings
Grades 2-3
Named after its generous donor, Jean Will, this program provides students with a loaned violin and takes them along a path of classical music development. Held at Conway School, the program is open to 2nd and 3rd graders enrolled or home-schooled in Escondido. The young musicians attend weekly lessons and perform on stage throughout the year.
Taste of the Arts – New This Year
Grades K-8
Art, music, dance, and drama come alive in this four-session experiential program. Sign up to have a Center Teaching Artist come to your class or afterschool program with all of the supplies to provide a meaningful, educational, and engaging art activity. Four one-hour sessions will be provided to accomodate a classroom with no more than 35 students. There is a flat fee of $500.00 per program.
Visual Thinking Strategies
Grades K-8
Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) uses art to teach critical thinking, communication, and visual literacy skills to young people. Growth is stimulated by three things: looking at art of increasing complexity, responding to developmentally-based questions, and participating in group discussions that are carefully facilitated by educators. The Center offers teacher training for using VTS in the classroom as a fee-based program. There is a flat fee of $895.

Heated Exchange: Contemporary Encaustics

No longer entombed with the mummies, the ancient art of encaustic (hot wax) resonates in contemporary culture. The multi-dimensional surface, luminous color, and ethereal image layering unique to this once obsolete medium is now recognized both for its exquisite beauty and incredible versatility. The exhibition is sponsored in part by Virginia Commonwealth University, VCUarts, and VCU’s Painting & Printmaking Department.
Cowboys & Vaqueros: Legends of the American West

Take a trip to the Wild West in this collection of grand paintings of nostalgic vistas of the American West and ornately decorated equestrian bits, spurs, and bridles. This journey through our region’s history explores the culture of the West and honors Cowboy, Native American, and Mexican traditions.
Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art

With a powerful message of environmental awareness, this exhibition highlights a creative alternative to mindless consumption and focuses on the importance of repurposing. Artists from around the world transform discarded hubcaps into fine art in a unique collaboration with Landfillart, Inc. Sponsored by The exhibition is toured by ExhibitsUSA, a national program of Mid-America Arts Alliance.

Student Gallery Wall At the Center, we are committed to partnering with the community and future artists. Our Student Gallery Wall is a space in our museum dedicated to showcasing the work of Escondido’s students. Every museum exhibition features student artwork associated with the art on view in the main galleries. Museum Education Explore the visual arts in the Center’s rich learning environment through a docent-led tour, workshop, lecture, or art activity focused on one of our museum exhibitions. Our tours present themes, techniques, and history that surround a work of art, while utilizing Visual Thinking Strategies to encourage audience participation and discovery. Engage with established artists and artists of tomorrow whose work proudly hangs on our Student Gallery Wall. K-12 and adult field trips can be arranged to meet the needs of any classroom or group. In conjunction with museum tours, visual and performing arts standards-based, hands-on activities can be designed to your specifications. Second Saturdays Participate in Escondido’s Second Saturdays where many galleries, museums, the Escondido Public Library, and Queen Califia’s Magical Circle open their doors for fun, learning, and entertainment. Center Teacher Liaison
The Center partners with Escondido elementary and middle schools, as well as surrounding districts through the Center Teacher Liaison program. Schools provide a liaison who becomes the link between the Center and their school. Center Teacher Liaisons meet at the Center three to four times per year to share and collaborate. The program aims to ensure that there is continued, reciprocal communication between the Center’s Museum and Education Department and its constituents.
