Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, My Story is a unique program that combines arts disciplines with core subject academic learning by sending teaching artists to fourth and fifth grade classrooms. The fourth grade curriculum brings California history to life. Students study theater and acting, which develops strong speaking and listening skills. The fifth grade classes use digital photography to tell a story and create written narratives that connect their photos with emotions, perspective, and elements of design while sharpening language arts skills.

JEAN WILL STRINGS

In its third year, the Jean Will Strings program continues to transform elementary students into prodigious violinists. Named after its generous donor, Jean Will, this program provides students with a loaned violin and takes them along a path of classical music development incorporating the Suzuki method. Held at Conway School, the program is open to 2nd and 3rd graders enrolled or home-schooled in Escondido. The young musicians attend a weekly one-hour private lesson, a monthly group lesson, and perform on stage throughout the year. In addition, students have the opportunity to meet with and learn from acclaimed professional musicians through the Master Class and Artist Outreach program.

VISUAL THINKING STRATEGIES

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) uses art to teach critical thinking, communication, and visual literacy skills to young people. Growth is stimulated by three things: looking at art of increasing complexity, responding to developmentally-based questions, and participating in group discussions that are carefully facilitated by educators. The Center, in partnership with VTS and EUSD, offers teacher training for using VTS in the classroom. Contact us at (760) 839-4179 for more information.
