UNUSUAL HEAT PENSIONED A YOUTH OF LABOR, AN AGE OF EASE

U

At 26 and the all-time leading California sire by state progeny earnings, Unusual Heat will continue to enjoy his life at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga. “It is with great emotion that we have to announce the retirement of Unusual Heat,” said Harris Auerbach, managing partner of M. Auerbach LLC. “He’s been remarkable, and even in his fnal season at stud in 2016 managed to get 25 of 30 bred mares in foal. It’s been an amazing run and I’m happy that ‘Heat’ can now just relax and enjoy the rest of his days just being a horse.” Bred by John T.L. Jones Jr. in Kentucky, Unusual Heat is by Nureyev and out of Danish champion Rossard. In 1991 he became at $250,000 the highest-priced horse ever sold at a Barretts yearling auction. He raced in Europe and the U.S. while trained by Dermot Weld, Richard Mandella, and Barry Abrams. A multiple listed stakes winner, Unusual Heat won six of 16 races, with two seconds and two thirds, for earnings of $142,605. Under the ownership of Abrams and Auerbach, Unusual Heat stood initially at Walter Greenman’s farm in Hemet before moving to Old English Rancho in Sanger, where he spent the bulk of his

nusual Heat may get to kick back in retirement, but his ofspring will have plenty to say on the racetrack for some time to come. As if to punctuate that, on the day his pensioning was announced, Oct. 10, at Santa Anita his daughter Warm Endowment won the frst race and Big Score, who is out of the Unusual Heat mare Not Unusual, captured the Zuma Beach Stakes.

early stallion career. In 2010 he moved to Harris Farms, where spent the last six seasons of his career at stud. In his frst crop of 15, Unusual Heat had 12 runners and 11 winners, including two stakes winners and one stakesplaced runner. While the numbers will keep climbing, at the announcement of his pensioning, his runners had amassed $52.4 million in worldwide progeny earnings. He has sired 53 stakes winners, 13 of them graded, and 150 earners of more than $100,000 out of 557 starters. Unusual Heat has won six California leading sire titles and has 12 straight titles as the leading turf sire of California-conceived runners. Te stallion has sired 15 California-bred champions, including two-time

California Horse of the Year and 2011 Eclipse Award winner Acclamation. Other notable runners include stakes winners Te Usual Q.T., Lethal Heat, Unusual Suspect, Golden Doc A, Gervinho, Burns, Pretty Unusual, Lennyfromalibu, Spenditallbaby, Mensa Heat, Tucked Away, Lakerville, and Lightmyfrebaby. Currently, he represented by 2016 stakes winners Cheekaboo, Majestic Heat, Pacifc Heat, Boozer, Central Heat, and Wise. “He’s been the perennial leading sire in California for over a decade,” said Doug Burge, president of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association. “His infuence on California breeding and racing through his sons and daughters will be prevalent for years to come.”

The late E. W. “Buddy” Johnston, who for decades with his family ran the historic Old English Rancho in Sanger, was to be honored Breeders’ Cup week by the Race Track Chaplaincy of America. As part of the RCA’s annual White Horse Awards, the Tribute to Excellence Award went to Johnston. Johnston’s father, E.B. Johnston, and mother, Betty, established Old English Rancho as a family operation from the start. Buddy and his wife, Judy, came on board very early, and the third and fourth generations of their children and grandchildren now run the farm. Old English has produced more than 200 stakes winners. E.W. ‘Buddy’ Johnston with Buddy, who died in 2015, served for jockey Pat Valenzuela 25 years on the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association board, as president from 1983-85. He was inducted into the CTBA Hall of Fame in 2012 and also received the prestigious Lafft Pincay Jr. Award.

HISTORY

10Thor’s YEARS AGO Echo became the frst California-bred to capture the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) when he galloped home four lengths in front of the full feld at Churchill Downs Nov. 4, 2006. He accomplished the feat while racing three wide on the turn of the $2 million, six-furlong event. Corey Nakatani piloted the 4-year-old gelding for trainer Doug O’Neill. Pablo Suarez’ Suarez Racing Stable and Royce S. Jaime Racing Stable owned Thor’s Echo, a son of Swiss Yodeler—Helen of Troy, by Mr. Integrity. Steve Warner’s Fast Lane Farms, Carlton Block, and Harry Forman bred him. “Not in our wildest dreams did we ever think we could win,” said Suarez. Thor’s Echo went on to earn an Eclipse Award as that year’s national champion sprinter.

25Robert YEARS AGO H. Walter’s Charmonnier stunned Best Pal in the California Cup Classic at Santa Anita Nov. 9, 1991. Best Pal, second in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and winner of the inaugural Pacifc Classic at Del Mar that year, went off as the 2-5 favorite in the Cal Cup. Charmonnier, trained by a relative newcomer

named Bob Baffert, was a 28-1 longshot. Charmonnier battled with Best Pal throughout most of the 11⁄8 miles, defeating the favorite by a head while ridden by Corey Nakatani. Walter bred Charmonnier, a gelded son of Batonnier—Fagers Charm, by Sham. Charmonnier ultimately won six of 43 races, with eight seconds and eight thirds, for earnings of $566,793.

50OnYEARS AGO consecutive days at Bay Meadows, two California-breds by My Host won stakes in 1966. Ellen Gruder scored frst in the Nov. 11 Bay Meadows Lassie Stakes, and the following day Wolfgang added the Burlingame Stakes. Wagner Stables bred and raced both horses, In the Lassie, Ellen Gruder, a 2-year-old daughter of the Brevity mare Windbelle, forced the pace before prevailing by a neck in the fnal furlong for jockey Dean Hall, getting the six furlongs in 1:09 4⁄5. George Wallace trained the flly, while Jimmy Jordan trained Wolfgang, a 2-year-old son of the Grey Sovereign mare Sovereignty. Wolfgang shaved a ffth off Ellen Gruder’s time, traveling six furlongs in 1:09 3⁄5 while winning by 11⁄2 lengths under jockey Esteban Medina.

CALIFORNIAN WINS TCA YOUTH ESSAY CONTEST Seventeen-year-old Katelyn Read of Los Gatos, Calif., won the Thoroughbred Charities of America’s fourth annual Youth Essay Contest. Another Californian, 17-year-old Arielle Lacob of Encinitas, received an honorable mention. The contest was open to recipients of services, volunteers, supporters, and anyone 18 years or younger impacted by an organization that received a grant from TCA in 2016. Contestants submitted an essay describing how a TCA grant recipient has affected his or her life. Read wrote about her experience as a volunteer with Neigh Savers, which rehabs, retrains, and rehomes Thoroughbreds in Walnut Creek, and the horse her mother adopted. The organization will receive a grant of $1,000 for Read’s essay. Lacob wrote about her experience with Saving Horses, a charity that will receive $500 because of her essay. “Volunteering with these amazing horses has given me memories that will last me a lifetime, no matter where in the world I am,” Read wrote as part of her winning essay. “Because of them, I have made lifelong friends, helped educate others, and most importantly, I have learned that no act of kindness is too small. Neigh Savers has taken hold of my heart and pulled me into something endlessly rewarding, and I feel so grateful to be a part of an organization that has helped not only revive Thoroughbreds’ lives but humans’ too.”

Memoriam

Bill Mochon Bill Mochon, a longtime chronicler of Thoroughbred racehorses as a photographer, died Oct. 3 at age 74. His family and many friends paid tribute to him at Santa Anita Oct. 10 with a race named in his honor. As a photographer with Vic Stein & Associates, Mochon photographed some of the fnest Thoroughbreds of the 1970s. As his work took him elsewhere, he left the racetrack, returning in retirement, camera in hand. While he continued to photograph the racing action, he also

mentored younger photographers. “Bill became like a second father to me,” said photographer Amy Gaskin. “He was the type of person few people are lucky enough to know in a lifetime.” Gaskin also spoke of Mochon when earlier this year he received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Press Photographers of Greater Los Angeles. She noted that Mochon advised her when she frst visited Hollywood Park in 2013 to be sure to get photos of horses in the paddock that weekend because “some might go to the Kentucky Derby—you never know.” Gaskin photographed California Chrome that weekend on his advice. Mochon was also generous with his photography, often giving photos to friends at the racetrack. He donated many of his equine photos to the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. A native of Providence, R.I., Mochon began Bill Mochon his photography career in 1960 while in the Marines. After his military service he worked as a commercial photographer in California, and he married his wife, Joan, in 1967. They have three adult children—Evonne, Dionne, and William. Mochon began working with Vic Stein & Associates at Santa Anita in 1974. His work has also been published in the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame, and he had many exhibits through the years. They included “The Cape” in 1973, “Sandcastles at Del Mar” in 1976, and “A Season in the NFL” in 1978, featuring the Los Angeles Rams. In recent years Mochon and his colleague and friend Shig Kikkawa, another prolifc racing photographer, spent many afternoons at the track. They rarely missed a trip to the paddock for a stakes race, recording top Southern California runners. “When I covered California Chrome’s journey to the Triple Crown races, it was Bill and Shig who guided me every step of the way,” said Gaskin. “Their gifts of knowledge, wisdom, and kindness were ones I will never forget.”

In time for its fall meeting Santa Anita installed a state-of-the-art video surveillance system that allows around-the-clock monitoring of the entire stable area. The system includes more than 1,000 high-defnition video cameras and is considered the most comprehensive system at any North American racetrack. Human and equine traffc in and out of individual stalls and barns can be monitored, with technology available to zoom in with each of the cameras. The video footage from each camera is stored and available for detailed review to ensure full transparency in the barn area. The California Horse Racing Board noted that it has urged its stakeholders to install video surveillance systems. Chuck Winner, chairman of the CHRB, congratulated Santa Anita “for making this very signifcant investment in our future and in the safety and well-being of our athletes, both human and equine.”

careers. The Thoroughbred Daily News in October featured Valerie Ashker and Peter Friedman’s 3,500-mile ride on Primitivo and Solar Express. Ashker said that the horses covered 20-30 miles a day and were doing exceptionally well. She undertook the journey as a way to demonstrate how athletic Thoroughbreds are and how well they can adapt to a variety of second careers. When the TDN article appeared, Ashker, Friedman, and the two horses were in the middle of Illinois en route to Middleburg, Va. They left in May from Crow’s Ear Farm in Northern California. Primitivo, bred by Dexter Bergounous, is a 7-year-old gelded son of Monashee Mountain—Siberian Shamrock, by Siberian Summer. Solar Express, bred by Victoria Polzin and Larry Lauberge, is a 17-year-old gelded son of Bold Badgett—Proper Look, by Properantes. Ashker has chronicled the trip on Facebook (@2ndMakesThruStartingGates).

SEABISCUIT DESCENDANT TO OLD FRIENDS California-bred Windy Land arrived at Old Friends in Georgetown, Ky., on Oct. 9 to live out his retirement. The unraced 17-year-old gelding is a son of Mixed Pleasure, a resident at Old Friends for four years until his death at age 30 in October 2015. Both descend from Seabiscuit through Mixed Pleasure’s dam, Sea I’m Lucky. Seabiscuit appears in the ffth generation of Windy Land, who is out of the Distant Land mare Our Distant Star. Windy Land had been a resident at All Breed Equine Rez-Q in Marysville, Wash., for four years after being rescued from a farm in Oregon.

Tom Bergstrom and Caitlin Zacha have been awarded the 2016 California Toroughbred Foundation/Southern California Equine Foundation Scholarship and CTF/Dolly Green Foundation Scholarship. CTF, along with the generous donations from the SCEF and Dolly Green Foundation, awards these scholarships annually to 2016 students at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine whose specifc interest is in equine practice. Bergstrom is scheduled to graduate from UC Davis in 2017 with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. A native of Southern California, he graduated Notre Dame High School and completed his undergraduate degree in biology at Occidental College. Prior to attending veterinary school, Bergstrom received the student achievement scholarship as a four-year member of the Occidental College football team. He has worked on a Toroughbred farm, at a zoo animal rescue, and as a veterinary tech Tom Bergstrom and assistant. Bergstrom’s emphasis at UC Davis has been in equine surgery, specifcally equine emergency surgery in lameness. He would eventually like to work in a Southern California racetrack practice. Zacha also is scheduled to graduate next year with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. A graduate of Viewpoint High School, Zacha came to UC Davis after double majoring in political science and communication at the University of Southern California. A lifelong horsewoman, Zacha has competed with her dressage horse and has served as a groom for the United States Dressage Team for the Pan American Games. She has also worked as a veterinary assistant for an equine ambulatory practice, as well as an assistant for a small animal general practice. oisterous” describes many winner’s circle celebrations. If Boisterous the stallion hits the way Tommy Town Toroughbreds hopes he will, there will be plenty of boisterous moments in the farm’s future.

ROBIN HARDIN

Tom and Debi Stull have structured Tommy Town Toroughbreds as a multipurpose farm that continues to produce top runners every year. Tommy Town annually is one of California’s leading breeders and was number one in 2015, 2013, and 2009, in large part through the California-breds the Stulls get by supporting their own stallions. Teir stallions proliferate the various California leading sire lists. Ministers Wild Cat always gives a good account of himself while Old Topper has long been a Tommy Town stalwart. Te Stulls also brought Kafwain to Tommy Town from Kentucky several years ago. “Boisterous is our newest venture,” said Tom Stull. “We’re really happy with the babies. We’re in partners on that horse with Gary Barber.” Boisterous, a millionaire on the track, entered stud in 2015. His frst foals arrived this year. Client stallions thrive at Tommy Town. Nick Alexander stands Grazen there, and several good runners have rep-

resented Grazen at California racetracks. While the Stulls breed a few mares in Kentucky every year, the crux of their program is the historic piece of land in the Santa Ynez Valley on which the farm sits. It frst began as a horse farm in the 1940s through the eforts of Mrs. Amory Hare Hutchison, who dubbed it Westerly Stud Farm. Fletcher Jones turned it into a showplace during the 1960s and 1970s, and Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas later made it his training center. “Money was no object when Fletcher Jones built this place,” said Tom. “It’s frst class.” Te Stulls purchased 165 acres of the Jones property in 2000 and quickly set about making Tommy Town Toroughbreds one of California’s leading operations. In 2001 they brought in Mike Allen, formerly with John and Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm, to manage the farm, and he has been with them ever since. As their operation grew, the Stulls

bought contiguous land. Some of the property once belonged to the late Alex Madonna, who built the Madonna Inn, a unique hotel with a wide variety of motifs that is located in San Luis Obispo. Tom and Debi met through her brother when they were growing up in Whittier and have been married more than 40 years. Debi has ridden throughout her life, and their daughter, Shelly, trains hunter-jumpers at her Bradbury facility. Te Stulls’ son, Aaron, is in the motorcycle business in Orange county and has also worked in property management in Costa Rica. As the Stulls developed an interest in racing, they started claiming horses in the mid-1980s. One of their earliest successful runners, owned in partnership with Jim Wilson, was Cal-bred Fa La Te Dough, a multiple stakes winner and earner of $254,050. Tat led to a bigger racing stable and ultimately breeding. Debi recalls their sending mares to some of that era’s

fnest California stallions, including Calbred Flying Paster. When the couple decided they needed a farm, they looked throughout Southern California and purchased the Tommy Town property. Later they discovered the adjoining Westerly property, where they now live, though Tom continues to travel to his machine-shop and property businesses in the Los Angeles area and Wisconsin. Sometimes they can put both of their businesses together on a trip, such as when they traveled to Wisconsin on the way to this year’s Keeneland yearling sale in Kentucky. Te Stulls often buy yearling fllies, both to race and ultimately to join their broodmare band of 50-60 mares in California and about nine in Kentucky. Tey work the sale themselves, with the help of Mike and his wife, Lisa. “We physically walk it and see every single horse,” said Debi. “Te four of us go through the catalogs, and we tag the

on opening day of the Santa Anita fall meeting. Even now, Tom and Debi manage to successfully use a third route—the claim box. Over the years that has proved very lucrative, though more difcult these days. In 2009 they claimed Northern Station for $12,500 at Santa Rosa and later won a stakes with her at Laurel. She has since produced 2015 Hutcheson Stakes (gr. III) winner Barbados, by Speightstown. “I don’t look as much anymore because I get tired of not fnding anything,” said Tom. “I did fnd one at Del Mar that had nine claims in.” Te Stulls won the shake for Wife Approved at $12,500. Two years ago at Keeneland their purchases included a Kentucky-bred daughter of Speightstown—It Tiz, by Tiznow, who has a unique distinction. Named Tiz a Tommy Town, the flly to date is the only horse to be favored over champion Songbird. In Songbird’s frst race, at Del Mar July 26, 2015, Tiz a Tommy Town went of at 8-5 and fnished Top, the scenic Santa Ynez mountains frame the farm; above, Tom and Debi Stull with farm manager Mike Allen second to 2-1 Songbird.

her so much that he immediately approached Tom and asked to buy into her. “We brought her home,” said Debi. “We’re not going to race her.” Wife Approved could very well be one of the mares the Stulls will use to support their stallions. It is a system that has worked well, as evidenced by the success of Ministers Wildcat. “We’re real happy with Minister,” said Tom. “He’s been pretty solid. He was always bred to California mares only. He’s done everything in California.” Ministers Wild Cat has sired 21 stakes winners, including Doinghardtimeagain, Going for a Spin, and Curvy Cat, all stakes winners bred and raced by Tommy Town. Te Stulls keep Doinghardtimeagain, an earner of $734,304, in Kentucky while Going for a Spin and Curvy Cat are part of the California broodmare band. Mike explained why he believes Ministers Wild Cat has succeeded. “He’s been really versatile—they run on dirt and turf,” he said. “Tey have good conformation. I think you can breed a lot of diferent types of mares to him.”

Ministers Wild Cat, like all of the other Tommy Town stallions, is well behaved. “He’s playful—he’ll try to take the shank from you,” said Mike. “But he’s not mean at all.” Old Topper is another farm favorite, especially since he has been on the farm since it began as Tommy Town. His 25 stakes winners include Top Kisser, Ain’t No Other, and Topper Shopper, all stakes winners bred by Tommy Town. “He’s not breeding as many as he used to, but he still throws real hard-knocking horses that get to the races and seem to run for a long time—real sound horses,” said Mike. Old Topper personifes the benefts of California’s incentive program. Many of his ofspring compete for years, reaping breeder and stallion awards for the farm, even if they are claimed away. “It’s defnitely an incentive to breed here,” said Debi of the program. Added Mike, “I think it’s the best program in the country. More people should get involved. It’s good for breeders who sell or race.” Old Topper’s progeny have also demonstrated an afnity for second careers over fences. Te Stulls often receive emails from people who ride horses bred by the couple. “Tey want to tell us if the horse has gone on to be an eventing horse or a Western horse,” said Debi, who added that people ask if the Stulls have photos of the horses as babies. “It’s nice to see that these horses have gone on and had another career.” Te Stulls brought Kafwain to California after standing him a year in Kentucky. Tey got 2014 Santa Margarita Stakes (gr. I) winner Let Faith Arise by breeding Babe Hall to Kafwain in Kentucky. Kafwain is also the sire of California stallion Te Pamplemousse. “He throws a real big-bodied horse, real nice shoulder and hip,” said Mike. “He himself is pretty good-sized. He can help out a smaller mare or a medium-sized mare. He throws a lot of bone. I think they actually run better as late 2-year-olds or 3-year-olds because of their size.” Even though the Stulls own these three stallions, they are looking to the future by bringing in Boisterous. Te son of Distorted Humor—Emanating, by Cox’s Ridge, earned $1,458,792 by winning such races as the 2013 Man o’ War Stakes (gr. IT). Mike said that Boisterous bred 82 mares in his frst season. California Chrome preps for the Breeders’ Cup Classic with a stroll in Santa Anita’s grade I Awesome Again Stakes

HE DID IT AGAIN! CHROME-OLOGICAL ORDER BY TRACY GANTZ

A

t what point is a race a foregone conclusion? Te adage that anything can happen in a race always applies, but California Chrome entered the $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes (gr. I) Oct. 1 at Santa Anita as about a big a lock as there is. He hadn’t put a foot wrong this year in an international campaign that began at Santa Anita, continued to Dubai, and returned to California, frst at Del Mar and then back at Santa Anita. Every time he wins, California Chrome fies the California-bred banner, demonstrating to the world just what the Golden State can produce.

With the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) on the horizon, the Awesome Again was a frst-class prep. A grade I race in its own right, it was perfectly positioned fve weeks from the Nov. 5 Classic. Since New York, Kentucky, and other racing jurisdictions conduct their own Breeders’ Cup preps, California Chrome faced four locals in the Awesome Again. He had defeated Dortmund, Hard Aces, and Win the Space in the $1 million TVG Pacifc Classic (gr. I) at Del Mar, and California-bred Soi Phet, coming of a win in the E.B. Johnston Stakes, also joined the feld. California Chrome had overcome the rail post position in the Pacifc Classic,

and he drew it in the 11⁄8-mile Awesome Again as well. “I can’t believe we got the rail again,” said trainer Art Sherman. “But if he comes away running, we should be okay. You’ve got to see how the race unfolds.” Trainer Bob Bafert put blinkers on Dortmund, indicating that the big 4-yearold colt might either try to take the lead or stay closer to 5-year-old California Chrome than he did in the Pacifc Classic. Perry Martin, who bred California Chrome with Steve Coburn, was confdent about the horse he now owns as part of California Chrome LLC with several top breeders and Taylor Made Farm. He said he advised jockey Victor Espinoza to try to get the frst quarter-mile in :23. As he had done in the Pacifc Classic, Espinoza sent California Chrome right to the lead. “It’s tough when I get the one hole and want to try and do something crazy,” the jockey said. “Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t.” Tis time it worked exceedingly well. Dortmund went right with California Chrome, who completed the frst quarter in :22.76. “I ran the frst part fast, yes, but then eased up on him,” said Espinoza, who slowed down the pace to get the frst halfmile in :46.08. “Tat was it,” said Martin. “He just coasted home. Victor wanted to save him for the Breeders’ Cup.” Indeed, that’s exactly what Espinoza thought about, as he looked behind him on the backside and again on the second turn. Dortmund stuck with California Chrome for a while, but even he couldn’t keep up. Espinoza wrapped up on California Chrome in the stretch to the point where they cantered across the wire, 21⁄4 lengths in front of Dortmund in 1:48.07. Win the Space won the race for third money. “Today was much easier for him than the Pacifc Classic,” said Espinoza. “He’s a challenging horse to run against because he’s versatile on top of his talent. He can run on the front end and can come from behind. Tat’s difcult to run against— he’s so tactical.” Sherman praised Espinoza’s ride as “per-

fect,” and Martin called the Awesome Again a nice prep that would sharpen him for the Breeders’ Cup. “He’s fulflling my visions for him,” Martin said. “I’ve always had a lot of confdence in the horse. I’ve always said I think I own the best horse in the world.” Martin had some additional fun with some campaign buttons urging people to vote for Chrome for president. “I think that the two major candidates between them don’t have one good leg to stand on—we proved today we’ve got four,” Martin said. “I think it could be a much-improved country if we could have Chromyism rather than cronyism. Our slogan, of course, as he proved here today is ‘Let’s make America Awesome Again.’ ” Martin was even looking beyond the Breeders’ Cup. He said possibilities might include the Japan Cup California Chrome and jockey Victor Espinoza are un (Jpn-I) or the Hollywood Turf Cup defeated on the year (gr. IIT) if it could also attract the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf and friends watched the Awesome Again (gr. IT). California Chrome LLC has pur- from the winner’s circle. just got that high cruising speed. He doesn’t get tired, and it’s hard to get by him. People get more respect for him (with every victory). He’ll have a great book of mares.” Taylor compared California Chrome to Tiznow. Both are Calbreds who earned national recognition as Horse of the Year. “I think Chrome is very much like Tiznow,” said Taylor. California Chrome has surpassed Tiznow as the all-time leading Calbred earner, and he is also the leading North American earner. Te $180,000 from the Awesome Again brought California Chrome’s lifetime earnings to $13,432,650. Sherman and his son Alan have done a phenomenal job training California Chrome. Tey brought him from his home base at Los Alamitos to Santa Anita several days before the race. Te horse was feeling so good that he put a scare into them, however, the morning of the race when they jogged him. “He gave me heart failure—he was up on his hind legs coming out of the gap,” said Art Sherman. “He was just feeling good. I’ve never seen him that tough. He’d just come of a great race in the Pacifc Classic. He’s scary good.”

ver the course of the frst three days of Santa Anita’s fall meeting, California-breds led a charge that resulted in three graded stakes victories. Te 5-year-old won both the $200,750 San Luis Rey Stakes (gr. IIT) and the $200,000 Charles Whittingham Stakes (gr. IIT) in 2015 before fnishing sixth in the $535,000 United Nations Stakes (gr. IT) at Monmouth Park in New Jersey. Trainer Peter Eurton said of the turf course at Santa Anita, “Tis is his kind of track. You gotta think this horse is just full of heart. When he’s healthy like he is right now, he’s great. Last year he was a little body sore, and I think the trip back East got to him. But when he’s healthy, he’s tough to get by.” Eurton trains Ashleyluvssugar for breeders Sharon Alesia, Mike Mellen’s BranJam Stables, and Joe Ciaglia. Dam Ashley’s Folley, California’s 2015 Broodmare of the Year, is also the dam of multiple stakes-placed Ashley’s Sassy and the winners Ashley’s Cutie and Ashley’s Bambino. She has four winners from fve starters. Howard Grossman, stable manager for Alesia, summed up the grit of their famous charge, noting that Ashleyluvssugar is “probably the most honest horse we’ve ever owned.” AMBITIOUS BREW’S EDDIE D STAKES

When downhill turf course specialist Ambitious Brew won the frst division of the Sept. 30 Eddie D Stakes, it brought a special memory full circle for Pam Ziebarth. Te race is named for Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Delahoussaye, a particular favorite of Ziebarth’s late mother, Cecilia Straub-Rubens. When Ambitious Brew fnished second in the 2014 edition of the race, Ziebarth ran into the former rider himself at the track. “He said he wished we’d won because my mom was special to him,” Ziebarth recalled. “We got a chance to have the same conversation the day Ambitious Brew fnally won.” Ambitious Brew, one of Ziebarth’s numerous homebreds, zipped down the about 61⁄2-furlong distance to score by 13⁄4 lengths. Jockey Mike Smith guided the 6-year-old son of Tizbud–Kathwen, by

Forest Wildcat, to settle in midpack early, then they swung four wide into the lane and drew of to win over Richard’s Boy and Hunt in 1:11.57. Favored Lady Shipman, a globe-trotting, graded stakes-winning mare, fnished sixth. Te win was Ambitious Brew’s ffth in nine tries down the hillside turf course, and fourth stakes score overall. He has

Godolphin’s Dedication to Racing award. “We did a full week back in Kentucky with him,” Ziebarth said. “He had a great time and got to see a lot of our old mares and our weanlings and yearlings that will be coming later. He got to see (grade I winner) My Sweet Addiction, who he groomed for 21⁄2 years. We saved her for last as a surprise.”

Returned to California now, Castaneda focused on Ambitious Brew and his preparations for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT). Most recently 3-year-old Enola Gray has added two more checkmarks after defeating older fllies and mares as well as winning on the grass. She took the fourth running of the $100,000 California Distaf Handicap down the hillside turf course at Santa Anita Oct. 15 and set a stakes record in the process. After dueling with both pacesetter Desert Steel and then the classy graded stakes winner Home Journey, Enola Gray kicked away to outlast them both, winning by a length and stopping the clock in 1:11.57 34

Baze noted that “she had a lot of stuf going against her. She had been sick, (and) we kinda took the speed out of her by running her long.” Phil D’Amato conditions Enola Gray for owner/breeder Nick Alexander, a Los Angeles resident who also campaigned Enola Gray’s sire, Grazen. Te graded stakes-winning son of Benchmark had amassed his own fne record of four wins in six starts before he was injured in the 2009 California Cup Classic Handicap. Grazen was able to enter stallion duty, supported largely by Alexander himself, and currently stands at Tommy Town Toroughbreds in Santa Ynez for $2,500. Stakes winner Grazen Sky is a product of Grazen’s second crop, with Enola Gray joined by Tough It Out as stakes winners from his third crop. Overall, Grazen has 33 winners from 41 starters through mid-October. Alexander said of Enola Gray’s passing her frst test on turf, “Tis was an experiment that paid of. Her sire, Grazen, never ran on the grass because he got hurt right before we had a chance. Now this gives us a lot of choices with her.” For now, Enola Gray will return to the main track. Already popular for her wicked speed, splashy gray coat, and clever name, Enola Gray has four wins in fve starts for earnings of $304,100. She is likely to return to Del Mar, where she won the $147,000 Fleet Treat Stakes by 73⁄4 lengths in July, for her next start, with an eye on grade I company at Santa Anita this winter as a future box to check.

quare Eddie’s progeny have marched up and down California, gracing winner’s circles at just about every racetrack. Jimmy Bouncer added to the stallion’s laurels at Fresno when he stormed home triumphantly in the $100,000 Harris Farms Stakes Oct. 8.

As with many of Square Eddie’s other runners, Paul and Zillah Reddam own and bred Jimmy Bouncer in California in the name of their Reddam Racing. Doug O’Neill trains the 5-yearold gelding, who prior to the Harris Farms had ventured out of Southern California only once. “A Cal-bred race for $100,000 was a great opportunity,” said O’Neill in explaining the decision to ship Jimmy Bouncer to Fresno. Sabas Rivera, who regularly rides California-bred Lava Man as a stable pony with the O’Neill barn, accompanied Fresno’s winner’s circle is large enough to hold Jimmy Bouncer and his entourage following his Jimmy Bouncer on the trip. regular Fresno jockey Abel Cedillo aboard, a good combination. Well Measured, who was coming of back-to-back allowance optional claimer wins at Del Mar, went of as the 4-5 favorite in the six-furlong Harris Farms. Bettors made Jimmy Bouncer the 2-1 second choice in the fve-horse feld. Cedillo hustled Jimmy Bouncer away from the gate quickly, and in just a few strides they had the lead. Tree others raced right with Jimmy Bouncer until he pulled away by a length at the half-mile pole. Tat lead increased around the turn. When Well Measured closed a little ground, Jimmy Bouncer lengthened his stride to put even more daylight between him and the feld. At the wire he fnished 33⁄4 lengths ahead of Well Measured, with Cartoonist third. Jimmy Bouncer stopped the clock in 1:10.17. “He’s so honest, whether he runs on turf or dirt—he never lies,” said O’Neill. Jimmy Bouncer won the frst four starts of his career, three as a 3-year-old in 2014 and one as a 4-year-old. O’Neill then tried him in graded stakes company, his best efort a fourth in last year’s Eddie D Stakes (gr. IIIT). In the 2015 TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. IT) at Keeneland, Jimmy Bouncer lost any chance when he was forced in and bumped. Jockey Mario Gutierrez wisely didn’t push him, and he fnished last of 14. O’Neill and assistant Leandro Mora said that after the Breeders’ Cup, Jimmy Bouncer underwent some surgery on a hind leg to repair minor damage. He was away from the races until he fnished second in an allowance optional claimer at Del Mar Aug. 31. “We gave him time, got him right, and now he’s doing super,” said O’Neill. Paul Reddam usually has a story behind the name of every horse, and Jimmy Bouncer is no exception. “Jimmy Bouncer is named after Paul’s brother Jimmy,” said O’Neill. “He was kind of tough as a kid, and his dad used to call him a bouncer.” Jimmy Bouncer the horse is out of the multiple stakes-placed General Meeting mare Meetmeinthewoods. O’Neill’s brother Dennis bought Meetmeinthewoods for $30,000 at the 2005 Barretts May 2-year-old sale from Golden Eagle Farm. Te Harris Farms Stakes raised Jimmy Bouncer’s record to fve wins and one second in nine starts for earnings of $278,090.

DANIEL LOPEZ BY EMILY SHIELDS

A

lthough his published work hours are from 7 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, if Daniel Lopez isn’t on the scene by 6:30, everyone starts to worry. “If he’s not there by then, we wonder, ‘What’s going on with Daniel?’ ” said Mike Tippett, owner of Blue Diamond Horseshoe, a growing Toroughbred farm in Aguanga, Calif. “He usually gets here by 6:15,” manager Renee Beckwith confrmed. “And if something happens, you never need to ask him to stay late. He just stays.” Lopez has only been with the Blue Diamond Horseshoe team for 14 months, but he is already irreplaceable. Te 42-year-old Mexico native grew up riding horses and herding cows on his father’s cattle ranch in Jalisco but came to the United States 18 years ago. He has never held a job that did not involve equines in some way. “Since he’s been here, he’s learned how to do landscaping and handle the farm

equipment,” said Beckwith. “But he’s always worked with horses and never done anything else.” Lopez is a jack-of-all-trades type on the farm, handling stallions in the breeding shed, feeding three times a day, and cruising the property in the Gator Utility Vehicle to check on each horse, often making multiple trips per day. He has also had a hand in the actual construction of the property, which is still very young, with new structures regularly being erected. “He helped build our huge mare motel, which has about 40 stalls,” Beckwith said. “He built all the pipe-panel pens, planted our 80 California pepper trees, maintains the property, and helps plant the alfalfa.” Tippett has another 10 acres of property across the street from the main farm, which is being planted as alfalfa felds. One day, he would like to add a place for Lopez to live. “In the future we could put one more house in on the acreage across the road, and then Daniel could live on the property,” Tippett said. “He is phenomenal.” Lopez has a special way with foals,

Beckwith noted, saying, “He’s very good at catching them. He’s very quiet, and very good with them.” But Lopez’ favorite horse on the farm isn’t a foal. It’s a yearling named St James Place. He’s by the farm’s premier sire James Street and out of the six-time winner Lady Biscayne. Lopez handles James Street, by El Prado, as well. Te multiple graded stakes winner earned $637,723 while racing predominantly in Canada at Woodbine. He has frst-crop yearlings this year. “He’s very good with the stallions,” Beckwith said. “He’s good at everything, really. If you teach him something, he learns it immediately. And he just loves horses. He’ll drive around and look at each one up close, even if you can see them all from where he’s standing.” Te farm always has more than 50 horses on the property. Tippett often sees Lopez during his Saturday walk-throughs. “Te stalls are always cleaned, and all the chores are done,” Tippett said. “You could not ask for a better employee. I cannot say enough about him.”

California-breds dominated the entire sale, with state-bred yearlings flling nine of the top 10 prices, the only nonCal-bred being the $105,000 top-priced broodmare. In addition to the Smiling Tiger colt, a Cal-bred daughter of Crown of Torns sold for $95,000 while two other yearlings brought $90,000. Barretts conducted the Oct. 18 fall sale at the Hinds Pavilion at Fairplex Park in Pomona, its former home, instead of its current headquarters at Del Mar. Sue Greene’s Woodbridge Farm led all other consignors, and Woodbridge sold the sale-topper as agent for Premier Toroughbreds, where the colt was bred and foaled. Premier initially stood Smiling Tiger, who now stands at Harris Farms. Smiling Tiger’s frst foals are yearlings, and he is a multiple grade I-winning millionaire. Former trainer Greg Gilchrist bought the Smiling Tiger colt for Steve Gasparrelli’s Slugo Racing. “Te horse is already green broke, but we’ll send him to Pleasanton to fnish up the breaking process,” said Gilchrist. “Ten he’ll probably go to Magali Farms.” Gilchrist said he liked everything about the colt, who is out of the stakes-winning Williamstown mare Erica’s Smile and is a half brother to stakes-placed Derivative. “He’s a beautiful animal—and very well-balanced,” said Gilchrist. “He’s got a great walk, and it seems like nothing bothers him. miling Tiger continued to infuence prices of yearlings at Barretts sales. Following the Barretts August select sale, where a daughter of Smiling Tiger brought the top price, a yearling colt by the California stallion sold for $190,000 to lead the company’s fall mixed sale as well.

out a very good-looking animal. I think Smiling Tiger is defnitely going to be an up-and-coming stallion for California.” Greene sold the Smiling Tiger sale topper in August as well as the one in October. “Te Smiling Tigers that I have seen at Woodbridge and Premier are such lovely individuals,” she said. “Tey’re nice-looking, they’re correct, they’re really athletic, and they have great bodies on them. Obviously, the jury’s out because they haven’t crossed the fnish line yet. But I can’t believe this horse isn’t going to be a good sire the way he’s stamping these foals.” Kim McCarthy’s McCarthy Bloodstock consigned the Crown of Torns flly, who is out of the Formal Dinner mare Sweetbabe, for breeder Richard Barton. Te mare has already produced graded winner Sweet Repent, an earner of $637,175. John Brocklebank, the sale’s

leading buyer, purchased the flly. “Tis flly looks like a real racehorse,” said McCarthy. “She really catches your eye.” Te two $90,000 Cal-bred yearlings were a son of Twirling Candy—Saint Knows, by Sweetsouthernsaint, and a daughter of Lucky Pulpit out of Cal-bred champion Ismene. Eddie Woods, a major Florida-based consignor to 2-year-old sales at Barretts and in Ocala, bought the Twirling Candy colt, consigned by Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency. Trainer Jef Bonde purchased the Lucky Pulpit flly, consigned by Harris Farms for Stephen Ferraro. A total of 174 horses grossed $2,484,000 and averaged $14,276 whereas in 2015, with the sale conducted at Del Mar, 175 horses grossed $2,534,500 and averaged $14,483.

The 1,000-acre breeding, boarding, and training facility in the fertile hills above Ramona is a breathtakingly beautiful island of peace and tranquility. Every detail is centered around lightning-fast Thoroughbreds, the passion of the late Ernest Auerbach. Shortly after the real estate developer founded E.A. Ranches in the late 1970s, he handed the reins over to Eliasson, whose 35-plus years of hard work, loyalty to the family, and unshakable belief in the stallions of the ranch are now culminating in a very special feat: This year not one but two offspring of E.A. Mr. Big (by Dynaformer), who this year stood his first season in California, will be represented by his 2-year-old son Big Score. An impressive winner of the $102,415 Zuma Beach Stakes at Santa Anita in just his third start, the dark bay colt will give the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT) a try. The colt’s owner/ breeder, George Krikorian, also owns his sire, Mr. Big. “How many small farms dream of having a Breeders’ Cup starter sired by one of their stallions, and it almost never happens,” said Eliasson. “And now it happens to us, even twice in one year. We are so incredibly lucky.” Still in some disbelief and already anxious three weeks out, she added: “Hopefully, this luck extends to ‘Ashley’ and Big Score in their races. Hopefully, they can make their mark in Breeders’ Cup history.” (At the time this article was written, the fields for either race had not yet taken shape.) Eliasson does not like to contemplate what might be. She knows only too well that in racing — as in breeding — tragedy and triumph are so closely intertwined that it sometimes is hard to bear. One such was the recent fatal breakdown of the graded-stakes-placed filly Big Book, a daughter of Mr. Big and another homebred star in the Krikorian stable. The beautiful gray — born, raised, and started at E.A. Ranches — was a casualty at Del Mar during morning workouts July 23. And then there are the

orses can get skin diseases from many diferent things, including fungi. Tese tiny primitive organisms are hardier than bacteria or viruses, and can survive and multiply in a wider range of temperature and environments. Some are parasites, causing skin lesions on humans and animals, multiplying by sending out microscopic spores. Tese spores can live in the environment a long time. RINGWORM

Dr. Rosanna Marsella, professor in the 50

department of veterinary dermatology at the University of Florida, says that when most people think of fungal infections, they think of ringworm. “Ringworm is actually over diagnosed,” she said. “Frequently, the problem is something else, such as a bacterial infection. It may be a dermatophilus (rainrot) or a staphylococcus infection. Just because the horse has scabby, scaly skin, the owner may assume this is a fungal infection and treat it as a fungal infection. “Te reality is that ringworm is mainly a disease of young horses, old horses, or individuals that have metabolic disease or a compromised immune system—or some other predisposing cause. Te majority of healthy horses don’t get ring-

worm, even if these fungi are present in the environment, due to the ability of the immune system to fght the initial exposure. “If there is a question about the true cause of the skin problem, we can pluck some hair and put it on a DTM (dermatophyte test medium) plate and culture it. Ten we can treat it appropriately.” Topical anti-fungal medications will generally clear up ringworm. “If people want to use a topical product, they should not use iodine,” said Marsella. “Tere are several veterinary combination products that contain ketoconazole, which is an anti-fungal drug, and chlorhexidine, which is anti-bacterial. If you don’t know exactly what you

dogs, however. You can’t use human products for these conditions. For a horse, you need a product that’s not more than 2.5% to 3%, and most of the human products are 5 to 10%. Horse owners need to be aware of this, but if they use a benzoyl peroxide shampoo, it will take care of rainrot (dermatophilus) and staphylococcus—all the secondary itchy, scratchy

We see this type of infection in states like Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and sometimes in Georgia, South Carolina, etc.” A person is not likely to see this disease, which causes intense itching, in an arid region, except in horses brought from a warm, moist climate. “Te lesions start under the skin, so

are dealing with, this is a good choice because it covers both types of pathogens. Or you can use Nizoral shampoo, which is a human version of the ketoconazole shampoo. Tis shampoo can now be purchased over the counter, without a prescription, and you can bathe the horse with this. “Another thing some people use for ringworm is lime sulfur dip. Lime sulfur smells bad, like rotten eggs, but is one of the best anti-fungal medications. It should be left on the horse. Basically, you sponge it on and let it dry. If you have a white horse, however, it leaves the horse temporarily yellow. Tus, it is not as cosmetically pleasing as using a shampoo.” Most horses that are losing hair and have scabby, scaly skin do not have ringworm, however. “Te vast majority of these lesions are actually a bacterial infection,” said Marsella. “Sometimes you don’t know which it is, so if you use the combination product, it will address both types of infections. Tis product is very safe, and you are covering both bases. If it is truly ringworm, you must also be concerned about transmission to other horses and to people—and be careful to not share the same brushes and tack.” Girth itch can be spread by use of the same saddle, but what most people refer to as girth itch is actually a staph folliculitis. “Staphylococcus is present on the skin, as part of the natural fora,” said Marsella. “But if the skin is rubbed by an abrasive cinch or girth and becomes raw, it can create an infection. With a little trauma and friction, and moisture from sweat, staphylococcus tends to proliferate. “Te same is true when horses get a little crusting on their back, due to rubbing from a saddle pad. It’s usually a folliculitis—a proliferation of staphylococcus, due to microtrauma and moisture. “One thing horse owners can keep available is benzoyl peroxide shampoo. In summer when horses sweat and stay moist, or it rains daily, this type of infection is common. Benzoyl peroxide is used by people with acne. It’s antibacterial, and there are preparations for animals, as well. “Te concentration that’s used for humans is actually too harsh for horses and

skin problems you get during wet seasons and summer with fies, allergies, etc.” PYTHIOSIS

Ringworm is a superfcial fungal infection, but there are other, more serious fungal infections that are subcutaneous and deeper. Pythiosis is one of the worst fungal infections. It is also called swamp cancer, and is mainly a problem in the southeastern U.S. in warm, wet climates. “If horses are exposed to standing water containing organic material, they may be at risk. Here in Florida, this is often the case after a hurricane, where there are many fallen trees. you are not dealing with hair loss, scabs, etc. like ringworm,” said Marsella. “Instead, there are nodular, proliferative draining lesions. “It looks a little like the swellings from Habronema (tiny worms that are spread into skin wounds by fies) and summer sores. Tis would be one of the diferentials in diagnosis. If a horse gets proliferative, itchy lesions in the summer, and you deworm the horse with ivermectin and it doesn’t clear up, this might be pythiosis. It can also be diagnosed with a biopsy. “Habronema summer sores are due to a combination of the fy larvae and the hypersensitivity. Besides the ivermectin treatment, we may also use a small dose of steroid, to relieve the swelling, infam-

afects humans and can also afect dogs. “Tere is a reason why it is called swamp cancer because it does act like cancer,” said Marsella. “Te best treatment is surgical removal of the lesions. Clinicians have tried topical therapy, but it’s not as efective. “Te challenge with Pythium is that it’s not a typical fungus and it does not have ergostorol as part of its cell membrane, like other fungi have. Te majority of medications that we utilize to treat fungal

mation, and itching. But before steroids are used, we have to make sure it is truly Habronema, because steroids would be contra-indicated for a fungal infection. Tus, you really need a biopsy. “Pythiosis is typically seen on the horse’s legs if the animal has been standing in water. Tere are draining lesions that include hard, coral-like masses, which are made up of hyphae (flaments of the fungus) in the tissues.” Pythiosis is a disease that sometimes

infections target ergostorol. So an organism that doesn’t have ergostorol is not easily killed by these medications—because of the composition of the cell wall. Tis is why medical therapy is a challenge and we have to rely primarily on surgery. “Tere is a vaccine that can be used— not for prevention, but for treatment. Te issue with Pythium is not just the organism, but also the kind of immune response that is built against it. “Individuals that get pythiosis are those that are incapable of building an efective immune response. Te immune response is more of a cell-mediated lymphocytic response. So the purpose of the vaccine is an attempt to create a more productive immune response. “It works best if used immediately after diagnosis—the sooner, the better. If you can use the vaccine within a few weeks after the development of lesions, you have highest success. If the lesions are several months old, the vaccine doesn’t work very well.” Treating pythiosis early is very important. Prevention basically involves keeping horses dry, where they are not standing in water. Dr. Leonel Mendoza, with Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics at Michigan State University, was instrumental in creating the vaccine. He says pythiosis was originally considered a rare disease in the United States. “About 20 years ago we started seeing cases, especially in the Gulf Coast

states,” he said. “And now we see thousands of cases annually in the southern part of the U.S. and some cases as far north as Wisconsin. “Tis organism likes warm weather. If the summer is really hot and rainy, we generally see more cases. Te fungus lives in the ground and loves water. It is one of the water molds and lives in swampy areas. It goes through its entire life cycle in water and produces spores with fagella that swim in the water. When it comes in contact with skin, if there is an opening in the skin, the spores will produce a hyphea (small tube), which can penetrate under the skin and cause infection.” A horse may get this disease when wading in water, but not all horses exposed to this pathogen become infected. “If you have 10 horses wading in the swamp, maybe one will be infected,” said Mendoza. “Some may be in a part of the swamp where there aren’t many spores swimming. Or, certain horses may have a defect in their immune response that we can’t detect, and are more vulnerable to this infection.” Treatment has been difcult, and Mendoza said that anti-fungal drugs have had varied results. “It only works in about 5% of cases—so we know pythiosis doesn’t respond very well to anti-fungal drugs,” he said. “If a horse has this type of infection, he will probably die with it, unless treated with immunotherapy. “Pythium immunotherapy stimulates the immune response to act against the pathogen—enabling the horse’s body to fght it. It puts the immune system into better (stronger) shape, and then the immune system itself can defeat the pathogen. “A company in Texas (Pan American Veterinary Laboratories) makes the vaccine. If a horse can be treated with this vaccine within the frst two weeks of infection, there’s a 100% chance for cure. After that, immuno-

therapy works in about 70% of cases. Tis is why an early diagnosis is very important.” Another treatment, which is more invasive, is surgical removal of the growths. “Surgery only works in the very early stages of the infection,” said Mendoza. “If the growth has become huge, it won’t work.” OTHER FUNGAL INFECTIONS

“Tere are many other fungal infections, including subcutaneous infections like sporotrichosis and other opportunistic infections,” said Marsella. “Humans, cats, and dogs

If you prick your fnger on thorny bushes or roses and get the fungus in your skin, it can establish a subcutaneous infection. Tis creates nodules that may rupture and drain. Te infection follows the lymphatic system. It goes from your hand (or an animal’s leg) along the line of the lymphatics and may end up as a systemic infection. “Tis is a zoonotic disease, similar to ringworm, in that humans and other animals can get it. If you are dealing with an animal that has nodules and draining tracts, you should wear gloves until you know exactly what it is. If you have any cuts or scrapes on your hands, you could get it, too. “Tis fungus lives in the environment and needs a port of entry to cause infection in animals and humans, such as contamination of a wound. Te fungus is inoculated directly into the skin and is able to establish infection.” Sporotrichosis can be easily diag-

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old), a double dagger (‡) that he is not standing in California in 2015 but will stand in the state in 2016. Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Oct. 16, 2016.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old), a double dagger (‡) that he is not standing in California in 2016 but will stand in the state in 2017. Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
