CAL-BRED TURF EXTRAVAGANZA

GOLDEN GATE FIELDS, APRIL 30

From the EXECUTIVE CORNER DOUG BURGE CTBA PRESIDENT

Join Us at the Cal-bred Turf Extravaganza

W

hile continuing to ofer more California-bred restricted racing opportunities in Northern California, the CTBA is pleased to co-sponsor the third running of the Cal-bred Turf Extravaganza, to be held Sunday, April 30, at Golden Gate Fields. Tis event will again ofer four Cal-bred turf races, including both the $100,000 Silky Sullivan for 3-year-olds and the $100,000 Campanile for 3-year-old fllies, as well as two frst-condition allowance races. With many Cal-bred stakes highlighting the Southern California racing year, we are pleased to provide a showcase of California-bred races in the north. Te major obstacles in ofering such an event has been the limited purse money available in the north as well as the current emphasis on open overnight races, given the limited inventory based in that region. As Cal-breds make up roughly 60% of the feld sizes in the north, the focus has been on open races, which do include the added 30% bonus awarded to California-breds. As was the case in 2016, the number of restricted opportunities will also include two maiden special weight races featured on Saturday, April 29, as part of the Golden Gate Fields Turf Festival. Terefore, six Cal-bred races for various categories of horses will be ofered over the two-day period. Te California-bred restricted races carded for the weekend will have higher total purses ofered through supplements from our Cal-bred Race Fund.

We are hoping this will be something we can continue to ofer in the future, and appreciate the support from Golden Gate and the Toroughbred Owners of California. A complete listing of race conditions and purses is reproduced in the table below. We also continue to have discussions with the California Authority of Racing Fairs as we provide ample restricted racing opportunities at various fair locations. Te $100,000 Everett Nevin Stakes at Pleasanton and the $100,000 Harris Farms Stakes at Fresno will again be part of the Golden State Series of races and will be featured later this year. Tere is also a possibility that several Cal-bred maiden allowance races will again be available during the fair meets.

Te CTBA Racing Committee continues to focus on providing more restricted racing opportunities for owners/ breeders both in the north and south. Te CTBA invites everyone to join us at Golden Gate Fields for the day on Sunday, April 30. Tat morning we will hold an Open Forum for members to discuss various issues. It will be held in the Bayview Lounge at 10:30 a.m. Following the Forum, we will once again host a Hospitality Area, which will be located on the Player’s Patio and will include an appetizer bufet, cash bar, and a meet and greet with the CTBA Board of Directors. Tickets are not required; simply show your CTBA member Track Pass for entrance. We look forward to seeing you there.

California Chrome, the California-bred superstar and two-time Horse of the Year, is proving so popular at stud that he will shuttle to the Southern Hemisphere as well. The agreement calls for the stallion to shuttle for the next three seasons to Oussama Aboughazale’s Sumaya Stud near Santiago, Chile. California Chrome is in the middle of his frst breeding season at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky. “California Chrome has generated a lot of interest from the Southern Hemisphere, so we agreed to explore the California Chrome option of shuttling,” said Duncan Taylor, president and chief executive offcer of Taylor Made. An earner of $14,752,650, California Chrome is coming off his most recent championship season, when he was voted national Horse of the Year and California Horse of the Year, both for the second time.

NAMED FOALS OF RACING AGE

California champion Sircat Sally kept her record perfect when she won the $75,000 China Doll Stakes at Santa Anita March 11. The one-mile turf event was the 3-year-old flly’s frst attempt in open competition. In against 11 rivals, Sircat Sally went off as the 6-5 favorite, with Mike Smith in the saddle. She sat in second until the fnal turn, when she took the lead. At one point in the stretch, Sircat Sally was in front by three lengths, and Smith brought her home an easy winner over Beau Recall by 11⁄4 lengths in 1:34.40. Jerry Hollendorfer trains Sircat Sally for owner/breeder Joe Turner. A California-bred daughter of Surf Cat—Sister Sally, by In Excess, Sircat Sally previously won a maiden Cal-bred race and two Cal-bred stakes, the 2016 Soviet Problem Stakes on the dirt at Los Alamitos and the 2017 California Cup Oaks on the turf at Santa Anita. “She does it like she’s an old pro,” said Turner. “I told Jerry that maybe we could fnd a race at Oaklawn or Sunland to fnd a track like Los Alamitos. He chuckled a little bit and said, ‘She’ll run on anything.’ ”

HISTORY Best Pal

Bordonaro

10 YEARS AGO Twice California-bred Bordonaro shipped to Arkansas to compete in the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn Park, and twice he came away victorious. The second time occurred April 13, 2007, when as the 2-5 favorite he defeated Semaphore Man by a half-length. With Richard Migliore aboard, Bordonaro completed the six furlongs in 1:09.11. Bill Spawr trained the gelding for owner/breeders Fred Carrillo and Daniel Cassella. A son of Memo—Miss Excitement, by Rajab, Bordonaro ultimately won 10 of 20 races for earnings of $938,128. He was named champion Cal-bred sprinter in 2005.

25 YEARS AGO When Best Pal collected the $537,500 Oaklawn Handicap (G1) April 11, 1992, he surpassed Snow Chief as the richest California-bred of all time. The victory brought his earnings to $3,388,695. Sent away the 7-10 favorite in the 11⁄8-mile race, Best Pal faced a feld that included Eclipse Award winner Fly So Free and major winners Sea Cadet and Twilight Agenda. Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Best Pal defeated Sea Cadet by 11⁄2 lengths in 1:48.10. Gary Jones trained Best Pal for John and Betty Mabee, who bred the gelded son of Habitony—Ubetshedid, by King Pellinore. Best Pal went on to earn $5,668,245, and today he is third among all-time Cal-bred earners, behind only California Chrome and Tiznow.

50 YEARS AGO California-breds captured both divisions of the Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate Fields April 8, 1967. In the frst division Kahl Kabee beat Pedrinho by a neck with jockey Bill Mahorney aboard, stopping the timer for the mile in 1:362⁄5. Mahorney won the second division as well, on Field Master, who outfnished Proud Land by a half-length in the same time. J.K. Stable bred Kahl Kabee (Grounded II—Miss Kay B., by Swaps) and owned him with Royal Oaks Farm. Mr. and Mrs. James H. Seley bred and owned Field Master (Trackmaster—Capricious Lady, by Count Fleet). Cecil Jolly trained Kahl Kabee, and Warren Stute trained Field Master.

Joe Daehling and Holly Evans’ Fast and Foxy edged Turkish Tabby to capture the $59,625 Camilla Urso Stakes at Golden Gate Fields March 18. With Catalino Martinez in the irons, Fast and Foxy took the lead shortly after the start of the six-furlong Camilla Urso and led throughout. She had a 21⁄2-length lead in the stretch and valiantly held off closer Turkish Tabby to win by a nose in 1:09.20. “I was just hoping she would hold on,” said Evans, who also trains the California-bred 7-year-old mare. “She just never stops—she just keeps going. She’s tough.” Daehling bred Fast and Foxy in the name of his Daehling Ranch. The daughter of Thisnearlywasmine—Zorra Roja, by Falstaff, was winning her 15th race in 40 starts. Fast and Foxy, who was third in last year’s Camilla Urso, raised her lifetime earnings to $437,328.

Santa Anita, SCEF, Dolly Green Donate to CTF Tree past contributors have continued their record of substantial gifts to the California Toroughbred Foundation (CTF). Santa Anita Park, which has long donated to horse racing-related charities through the distribution of funds generated through regular “charity days,” allocated a substantial donation to the CTF. For the third consecutive year the Southern California Equine Foundation (SCEF) and its afliate, the Dolly Green Research Foundation, have generously supported the CTF and its work to provide student scholarships. Santa Anita’s donation is part of the California Horse Racing Board regulation that requires state racetracks charity days, with 100% of the proceeds allocated to charities. Te CTF is one of 10 organizations designated by Santa Anita to receive funding from last year’s charity days. Te CTF has long provided two scholarships at the U. C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Tose scholarships are now named the California Toroughbred Foundation/Southern California Equine Foundation Scholarship and the California Toroughbred Foundation/Dolly Green Foundation Scholarship. Te SCEF is dedicated to the care of the injured horse and seeks to stimulate, fund, and oversee medical research to beneft equine athletes. Te Dolly Green Research Foundation emphasizes research with a practical beneft to the racehorse. She was director emeritus at the time of her death. “She knew how to be a good board member and gave generously of her time, efort, and ideas,” said Jeanne Canty, now CTF ex ofcio president. “She was always there, ofering good discussion, and she was bright. Bay was one of our board group who worked hard to inventory the art and establish the veterinary scholarships. She and I became very close personal friends, and I loved her wonderful sense of humor. We had great conversations, and I am so glad our paths crossed.” A more complete look at Mrs. Schifer’s life can be found on page 12 of this issue.

ALERT BAY VERSATILE TRAVELER

A Cal-bred, the consistent multiple graded stakes winner Alert Bay is the best horse Peter Redekop has ever owned BY EMILY SHIELDS

Alert Bay, a 6-year-old, is a genuine and determined athlete who exemplifes both the speed and grit that make California-breds so attractive. Over the course of four racing seasons, he vaulted himself into exclusive company by becoming the 63rd state-bred millionaire. Redekop’s Kentucky sales agent bought fve newly turned yearlings in 2012 at the Keeneland January mixed sale with the intention of pinhooking them as yearlings later. “We paid $65,000, and expected to at least get our cost back out of him,” said Redekop. However, Alert Bay only brought $42,000 at the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale, which failed to meet his reserve. “We bought him back, and I told the boys to break him and see what happened,” Redekop recalled. “As they were training him, he started showing some run and they got excited. I couldn’t get excited, though, because no one even wanted to pay for him, so how could he really be that good?” At that point the Canadian-based Redekop hadn’t yet seen the yearling son of City Zip out of the Chilean-bred Dushyantor mare Hickory. But the gelding had the pedigree to succeed. His dam was the 2005 champion miler in her native country, win-

t never entered my mind that one day this horse could become a millionaire,” owner Peter Redekop said of Alert Bay. “But this is the best horse I’ve ever had.”

ning two major stakes after being group 1-placed the year before. Hickory eventually won seven of 24 starts and was retired after a failed attempt to succeed at the same level in the United States. Hickory’s frst foal, the Terrell flly Wild Hickory, was born in 2009 and nearly mimicked her dam, winning seven of 25 starts. Te mare’s second foal was Alert Bay, born April 21, 2011, at Cal Fischer’s Madera Toroughbreds. “He’s not a big horse, and he doesn’t look overpowering,” Redekop said. He turned the horse over to Northern California trainer Blaine Wright, still not sold on the horse’s talent. Alert Bay debuted at Golden Gate Fields Nov. 9, 2013, in a 51⁄2-furlong maiden race on the Tapeta synthetic surface. He fn-

He still had not faced top-tier competition, but that opportunity came one start later, in the $201,250 Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes (G2T) on the grass at Santa Anita. Despite his credentials and good form, Alert Bay was sent of at 9-1. “Tat race was a big eye-opener for me,” said conditioner Wright. “He was about to turn 4, and he just showed up that day. He never got the respect of the bettors, but he ran a great race.”

ished second, missing only three-quarters of a length, then fnished second again in his next start three weeks later. After Alert Bay ran second for the third time, Redekop remained frustrated. “He wasn’t winning, but Blaine was really high on him,” Redekop said. “I told him, ‘I’ve seen nothing so far.’ Te rest is history.” In his fourth start, the frst start of his 3-year-old season, Alert Bay was switched to the grass and tried two turns for the frst time. He responded by winning by a length, kicking of a three-race win streak that saw him take the $200,000 Echo Eddie Stakes at Santa Anita in his black-type debut. Alert Bay ran the gantlet of California-bred restricted stakes for sophomores, placing in the $250,000 Snow Chief Stakes at Santa Anita and the $100,000 Silky Sullivan Stakes at Golden Gate before shipping to Redekop’s home track of Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver. “I came to Canada in 1947 as a refu-

gee,” Redekop said. “I grew up on a farm, but had fun following the horses. I’m 80 now, so I don’t travel that much anymore.” Alert Bay won the $150,000 British Columbia Derby (G3), giving Redekop his third straight victory in the race following Second City in 2012 and Title Contender in 2013. Instead of shipping

Under jockey Tyler Baze, Alert Bay rallied from midpack to win by a neck, defeating multiple graded stakes winner Home Run Kitten on the line. “When he won the grade 2 at Santa Anita, that’s when we knew he was one of the best we’ve had,” Redekop said. “He was giving us all the excitement, which is

why I’m in this sport.” Alert Bay would have been a logical choice to be named California’s champion 3-year-old male except that he was born into the same crop as California Chrome, who won the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1) that season. California Chrome swept three Golden State awards. Te streaking Alert Bay added a ffth straight victory in his 4-year-old debut, the $250,500 California Cup Turf Classic Stakes on the 2015 Cal Cup Sunshine Millions card, before going to the sidelines for a few months. He returned in June, but it took three starts for him to regain his momentum. During that time, Alert Bay fnished third in the $200,000 Longacres Mile Handicap (G3) at Emerald Downs in Washington, missing by only 11⁄2 lengths. Returned to California, Alert Bay won the $63,605 Rolling Green Stakes at Golden Gate, then impressed with a victory in the $200,750 City of Hope Mile Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita. Unfortunately, the cost of running in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1T)— Alert Bay was never nominated— kept him out of racing’s championship day. After an allowance win at Golden Gate in November 2015, Alert Bay rounded out the year by fnishing seventh in the Seabiscuit Handicap (G2T) and sixth in the Daytona Stakes (G3T). He showed his usual rally in a bid to repeat in the 2016 California Cup Turf Classic but came up short of winner What a View, who went on to take a grade 1 in his very next start. Despite running ffth in the Sensational Star Stakes and losing an allowance race, Alert Bay was still sent of as the 3-1 third choice in the $101,800 San Francisco Mile Stakes (G3T). Tat Golden Gate staple draws a big feld of classy horses year after year. Baze kept Alert Bay closer to the pace than usual, and the gelding ran gamely, dueling all the way to the wire to defeat multiple graded stakes winner Gabriel Charles by a neck, with Brazilian Triple Crown winner Bal a Bali another head

GRAY OVER STEEL

BY TRACY GANTZ

nola Gray not only is a talented California-bred flly, but is rapidly turning into a downthe-hill specialist. Tree times the gray 4-year-old has attempted Santa Anita’s unique turf course, and three times she has come away with victories. Her latest resulted in her largest margin over the distance and surface—four lengths—in the $100,690 Irish O’Brien Stakes March 18 for California-bred and California-sired older females. Enola Gray added that trophy to earlier ones in the 2016 California Distaf Handicap and 2017 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes over the same course of about 61⁄2 furlongs. Each time Enola Gray has tackled Santa Anita’s downhill turf course, Desert Steel has stepped into the starting gate with her. In the Cal Distaf, Desert Steel fnished second while Smoove It, last year’s O’Brien winner, separated the two in the Sunshine Millions race. “Tis was the one I was most nervous about,” said owner/breeder Nick Alexander. “We had Desert Steel on the other side of us. We had her pinned down the last two times, and this time she was on the outside of us. Tere was also a lot more speed in there today.” Enola Gray went of as the heavy 2-5

When the gate opened, Enola Gray broke sixth, but she and jockey Tyler Baze soon ranged up into second, dueling with Emmy and I. Before they crossed the dirt, Enola Gray had wrested the lead away, and she never relinquished it. Desert Steel tried to move inside, closing ground from ffth, but she had to settle for second. Enola Gray accomplished her task in 1:11.91. Lily Kai fnished third over Smoove It. “She loves the hill,” said Baze. “She was just out there having fun. It takes her a few strides to get going, but once she does, it’s like riding on a cloud.” Alexander noted that the ease with which Enola Gray covers the ground

means that she doesn’t get tired. Trainer Phil D’Amato, meanwhile, is eager to stretch Enola Gray out to a mile on turf. Enola Gray reminds Alexander of her sire, Grazen, the breeder’s stallion. Te late Mike Mitchell trained Grazen for Alexander. “Mike Mitchell, Phil, and I were Grazen’s biggest fans,” said Alexander. “I’m really excited that he’s got a huge book this year.” Enola Gray is out of the More Tan Ready mare Unsung Heroine. With the Irish O’Brien, Enola Gray raised her earnings to $509,100. She has six victories, two seconds, and a third in nine starts. Her stakes wins also include the 2016 Melair Stakes and Fleet Treat Stakes, both on dirt.

Avanti Bello, from post seven, had to go a little wide around the frst turn, but Prat moved him into second before heading down the backstretch. “Te frst part of the race, we didn’t go that fast, which is good for him,” said the rider. “He doesn’t have a lot of speed the frst part, but he needs to be right there at the end. SENSATIONAL SPECIALIST THE BREW-MEISTER BY TRACY GANTZ

Ambitious Brew, Richard’s Boy, and Bettys Bambino had each performed well in previous runnings of the Sensational Star, a $100,000 sprint down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course of about 61⁄2 furlongs. Ambitious Brew had won the race in 2014 and fnished second in it the following year to Bettys Bambino. Both missed the race in 2016 due to layofs, when Richard’s Boy ran second by a head to Boozer. Add to that the fact that Ambitious Brew and Bettys Bambino are graded stakes winners and Richard’s Boy is graded stakes-placed, and the Sensational Star became a very difcult prospect for anyone else. “Te feld was short but tough,” said Mike Smith, who piloted Ambitious Brew. Bettys Bambino, favored at 2-5, was coming of an amazing victory in the Dec. 26 San Simeon Stakes (G3T) after 22 months away from the races. Richard’s Boy had most recently won the Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint on the dirt. Ambitious Brew, meanwhile, was coming out of a 13th-place fnish in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) after winning a division of the Eddie D Stakes (G3T). Richard’s Boy and jockey Victor Espinoza set the pace in the Sensational Star, but Ambitious Brew stuck right with him. “When they were going head and head like they were, I was thinking, ‘I hope he’s ft enough,’ ” said trainer Marty Jones. Bettys Bambino fnished 11⁄2 lengths back, and it was later discovered that he had strained his left front suspensory. Ziebarth noted that Kathwen, the dam of Ambitious Brew, turns out good ones. “Everything out of this mare tries,” she said. Kathwen was only able to start once, but she descends from good roots. Tat cross has also produced stakes-placed twotime winner Love My Bud. In winning the Sensational Star, Ambitious Brew brought his record to eight wins in 22 starts for earnings of $559,225. “We freshened him after the Breeders’ Cup, and he seems to run well fresh,” said Jones. “He’s getting a little older, so maybe we’ll give him a little more time between races and pick our spots.”

CAL-BRED CHAMPION 2-YEAR-OLD MALES BY ELLEN PARKER

“Age is a very high price to pay for maturity.” —TOM STOPPARD

T

here is a wonderful old saying in racing lore that no one ever commits suicide with a good 2-year-old in the barn. When that youngster happens to be a male, this is particularly true as no one ever knows from whence a Kentucky Derby winner comes. And as long as there are roses to be won the frst Saturday in May, the Kentucky Derby will be the eventual goal of every top juvenile male—and a handful of females, too, of course. Watching young colts and geldings work out in the morning makes it almost impossible not to dream of classic deeds not yet done but still possible. Possibility, in fact, is what 2-year-olds signify best, for during the morning workouts, all colts look like champions. Reviewing the list of California-bred juvenile males will quickly reveal how many household names are within the mix—and Swaps’ name does not even appear, since Cal-bred awards were initiated after his time.

Pedigrees males and older males. Brother Derek, Caracortado, Cavonnier, Fali Time, and King Glorious were champion 3-year-olds males with King Glorious adding a champion sprinter title to his resume. Eclipse winners in the group include Bertrando (champion older male, 1993) and Snow Chief (champion 3-year-old, 1986). EARNINGS AND GRADED WINS

Classic wins and placings among this fne group of runners include Snow Chief (won 1986 Preakness, G1), Best Pal (second 1991 Kentucky Derby, G1), and Cavonnier (second 1996 Kentucky Derby). Tose moments played a part in California history that evoke emotional responses in all who witnessed them. After Best Pal ran so well in the Kentucky Derby, co-owner John Mabee said, “We had a party after the race, and you’d have thought we won.” Mel Stute, trainer of Snow Chief, had called him a “little stinker” after he ran an uncharacteristically poor race in the Kentucky Derby; thus his Preakness redemption was especially sweet. And anyone who saw Cavonnier come up a photo short of a Derby win for Robert and Barbara Walter could never forget the dignifed Barbara wiping away a tear. Even horses that did not compete in the classics ran up some incredible score-

cards. Grade 1 winners are Flying Paster, King Glorious, Te Bagel Prince, Racing Is Fun, Right Con, Tamarando, Georgie Boy, and Ofcer. Grade 2 winners are Bold and Gold, Century’s Envoy, Fleet Dragoon, Icecoldbeeratreds, Telly’s Pop, and Te Carpenter. Grade 3 winners are Bench Points, Chance Dancer, In Excessive Bull, Individual Style, Individualist, Proud Tower, and Purdue King. A number of the horses also either placed in graded races without winning any or placed in higher graded races than the level at which they won. Tese include grade 1 stakes-placed Aguila, Century’s Envoy, Icecoldbeeratreds, In Excessive Bull, and Purdue King. Grade 2 placings went to Bench Points, Chance Dancer, Daring General, Don’tsellmeshort, Fandarel Dancer, Gibson County, Individual Style, Individualist, Rousing Sermon, and Texcess. Horses who placed in grade 3 races are Pirates Deputy, Smokey Image, and California Diamond. Te money-won list is also quite impressive and shows how sound and versatile this group of “babies” really was. Best Pal leads the earnings list with $5,668,245 in the bank. Snow Chief ($3,383,210) and Bertrando ($3,185,610) followed. Millionaires, in order of bankroll, are Brother Derek, Cavonnier, Texcess, King Glorious, Flying Paster, and Fali Time.

Fali Time was the champion Cal-bred juvenile male in 1983

Caracortado, Rousing Sermon, Ofcer, Georgie Boy, Individualist, Tamarando, Right Con, and Purdue King all earned more than a half million. Horses with at least a quarter million in the bank are Monument, Proud Tower, Moscow Changes, Bench Points, Individual Style, Te Carpenter, Icecoldbeeratreds, Telly’s Pop, Century’s Envoy, Daring General, Gibson County, Acceptance, Racing Is Fun, Don’tsellmeshort, Pirates Deputy, Smokey Image, and California Diamond. California Diamond, as the latest champion, could easily add more to his earnings. MALE LINES

Nasrullah is truly the most dominant sire line, being represented by Bold Ruler, Caro, Fleet Nasrullah, and Seattle Slew, all of whom play large roles in the pedigrees of the 2-year-old male champions. But Relaunch has such a strong say due to the presence of Bertrando. Bertrando not only was a juvenile champion himself, but also sired three juvenile champions, thus continuing the Skywalker line from which he came. Bertrando’s champions were Ofcer, Pirates Deputy, and Tamarando. Champion Flying Paster, whose paternal grandsire was Fleet Nasrullah, also sired a juvenile champion, Flying Lieutenant, and is the broodmare sire of Dar-

SIRE SUCCESS

Fifteen of the champion Cal-bred juvenile males were geldings: Babs Moossa, Bench Points, Best Pal, Caracortado, Cavonnier, Chance Dancer, Daring General, Flying Lieutenant, Georgie Boy, Individualist, Monument, Moscow Changes, Pirates Deputy, Telly’s Pop. and Texcess. Several very good sires emerged from the group, however. Among the best were Bertrando and Flying Paster, both of whom were leading sires in California. Bertrando’s sire line is alive and well through his son Ofcer and grandson Boys At Tosconova, as well as three California sires: Coach Bob, Sierra Sunset, and Stormy Jack. Flying Paster is most notably present in the pedigree of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah via that stallion’s broodmare sire Yankee Gentleman (out of Flying Paster’s daughter Key Phrase). Yankee Gentleman is still at stud. Several other horses at stud are out of Flying Paster daughters, including Micromanage. Snow Chief is “still running,” as the old saying goes. His daughter Mozelle is the dam of California stallion Grey Memo. Brother Derek is still at stud in West Virginia, and there are no doubt lines and 38

When Enola Gray won the award as California’s champion 3-year-old female for 2016, owner Nick Alexander was quick to sing the praises of his manager, Carrie Drake, and of the frst hire she ever made: Frankie Rodriguez. Te latter has risen through the ranks to become Alexander’s foreman, eventually proving himself indispensable after he was hired as a basic ranch hand. Alexander established his Horse Haven in 2005, but the rundown property he had acquired needed extra care. “It had been abandoned for a long time, so we had to do a lot of physical repairs,” Alexander said. “Te fencing was worthless, and the irrigation didn’t work.” After the framework of the farm had been reestablished, Alexander hired Drake from her position at River Edge Farm, and Drake hired Rodriguez. “He had been working at Tommy Town Toroughbreds,” Alexander recalled. “His experience around horses dated back to when he was growing up in Mexico, but we just needed a basic stall cleaner and ranch hand.” It was a while before Alexander realized Rodriguez’ true potential. “He was a very quiet guy and did what he was told, but never showed a real desire to be more. As time went by, our number of horses increased and our staf came and went, but Rodriguez stayed. I fgured out he knew more than I ever realized and he was quite valuable.” Now Rodriguez has been the ranch foreman for a decade. He’s present at every single foal’s birth, and Alexander is in awe of Rodriguez’ prowess with broodmares. “He delivered 22 healthy foals from 22 tries last year, and so far this year is six for six. I haven’t had to call a vet for a delivery in two years.” Rodriguez’ other tasks include breaking the yearlings, getting them ready for the racetrack, managing and scheduling the rest of the barn staf, dealing with maintenance and fence building,

and setting the irrigation computer each night. He lives on the farm with his wife, Laura, and has consistently drawn Alexander’s respect. “He’s just my main, go-to guy,” said Alexander. “I don’t know what I would do without him.” Rodriguez has been present for the births of two of the most special horses born at Horse Haven. Alexander’s graded stakes winner Grazen, a son of Benchmark—Hazen, by Rubiano, was foaled by Rodriguez in 2006. Grazen sufered a career-ending injury in the California Cup Classic Handicap in 2009, but he was saved for stud duty at Tommy Town, where he was also conditioned for the races as a youngster. Alexander and the farm staf enjoy Grazen so much that during the of season, they bring the gray stallion home, returning him just before breeding begins in February. Rodriguez foaled out Grazen’s brilliant multiple stakes-winning daughter Enola Gray in 2013. Te state champion has earned $509,100 in just nine starts. When he’s not foaling future stakes winners for Alexander, Rodriguez spends his time spoiling horses and other animals. “He’s a dog and cat lover,” Alexander said. “And he’ll pull on Grazen’s tongue. He’s such a sweet horse—the ranch favorite.” Tat love of animals has propelled Rodriguez through his time at Horse Haven. “He’s a very quiet guy, but he’s always moving and doing something,” Alexander said. “He leads by example. He would never ask any of his guys to do something he doesn’t do himself. He’s completely reliable, with an incredibly strong love for horses. Tey’re his family.”

arbara Ranck-Perry can still recall when, as a kid showing horses in Montana, she asked her father for a Dutch warmblood to school over jumps. “He grabbed one of his racehorses and said, ‘Here, this one can’t run. Take him and teach him how to jump.’ ” Tat was the genesis of a racing and breeding operation that Barbara and her husband, Ron Perry, have today, anchored by the California stallion He Be Fire N Ice. Like many other children growing up in rural Montana, Barbara and her three sisters always had horses. “Our idea of getting together with friends was to jump on a horse and ride a half-

mile to the neighbor’s house,” she recalled. “My mom would drag us all over the state, as well as Idaho and Washington for horse shows. I think their plan from day one was how to keep the girls out of trouble. Te answer was horses.” While racehorses were beloved to Barbara’s father, Red, what he instilled in her was more than just a fondness for equines. A business tycoon, Red Ranck established General Well Service in 1961, and Ranck-Perry spent her whole life in the oil and gas industry. She moved to Texas in 1984, giving up horses prematurely and diving headlong into the business world. It was in New Orleans that Barbara met Ron, a longtime employee with Automatic

Data Processing. Before they married, he moved them to Orlando, Fla., for his promotion to regional manager, despite Barb’s love of Louisiana. So he promised his wife that “the next move would be mine,” said Barbara, and gamely stayed true to his word when she chose to move back to Montana following Red’s death in late 1993. “We helped my mom sell my dad’s drilling company, and his interest in real estate,” Barbara said. “But when it got down to his production company, Ranck Oil, I just couldn’t do it. We went to Byron Kluth at First State Bank of Shelby, got a loan, cashed in my moving chip, and we bought the company.” Out of that, they grew into their next venture, Commercial Energy of Montana, in 1997, vertically integrating from their natural gas production to the end-user businesses. Within fve years, the company was listed in Inc. magazine as the 44th-fastest growing private company in America. When Ranck-Perry came across photos of her father’s old racehorses, as a birthday surprise for his wife, Ron tracked down one of Red’s last living horses, Redsgoodfridaygal, and brought her home. “Typical Toroughbred, she was lonely and didn’t eat,” Barbara remembered. “One of my dad’s friends, Bob Smith, came by and brought a 2-year-old from the track that was hurt to keep ‘Friday’ company. him, and they had to have earned more than $100,000. A couple are graded stakes-placed. His foals have great bodies and strong minds, and we are really happy with them. Our retired racemares are picked because they nick well to Fire.” Tis year they have six yearlings and six foals by the young sire as well as dozens from outside broodmares. Tiz a Kiss picked up where He Be Fire N Ice left of. Te Cal-bred daughter of Cee’s Tizzy—Candy Factory, by Seattle Bound, won four times in 24 starts over four years of racing, with seven seconds and a third. She ran second by a half-length in the $200,690 Goldikova Stakes (G2T) in 2016 after running ffth in a grade 1 contest. She retired in January with earnings of $361,441. Ron and Barbara frmly believe in being responsible owners who help re-train or re-home their retired horses. Atticus Pomponius is now a jumper with Amy Hess, as is Gonna Fly Now, another graded stakes-placed winner for Cicero Farms. He fnished third in the $251,750 Pat O’Brien Stakes (G2) on the same card where He Be Fire N Ice just missed in his grade 2 debut. Another, Phantom Lover, who lost by a neck and a head to Sky Kingdom and Blue Skies N Rainbows, was adopted by their farrier, Wes Champagne, for his wife after Phantom’s retirement from racing. “We want to do the right thing for our horses,” Ranck-Perry said. “We want racing to be both fun and proftable, but we also have to be responsible. Everyone should play on the same feld, and the horses need to be taken care of. Our goal is to fnd them second homes and/or second careers, and we hope that everyone in the industry will continue to do the same thing for their horses.” While they wait for their frst crop of He Be Fire N Ice ofspring to hit the track next year, Ron and Barbara, who have been married 26 years, have several runners still in training. Ranck-Perry may have made mistakes when she began, but she embraced the experience. “You learn so much from your mistakes, and start doing things better,” she said. “I hope I’ve become a better owner and a better race manager. I love my horses. We show up with a bag of carrots and can’t wait to see them, and Ron is a very happy groom, who still needs some training.” With their new retirement home in Del Mar, this genuine partnership is a recipe for racing success. a learning curve” Te flly, Impressive Miss, by Matthews Keep—Carson City Miss, by Carson City, got Ranck-Perry thinking about getting into breeding. “I thought wouldn’t it be fun to have a foal? I did everything wrong.” Teir frst foal, in 2006, was Atticus Pomponius, a son of Pivot. He only won once in 21 starts, for Terry Knight at Golden Gate Fields, but through his breaking, training, and subsequent racing, Barbara and Ron were introduced to many of the players who would shape their Cicero Farms: from Ron’s college classmate, Churchill Downs’ Steve Sexton, to trainers Knight, Ronny Werner, Jerry Weaver, Ron Ellis, Cliford Sise Jr., John Sadler, Richard Baltas, and Bob Hess, Jr. “We quickly realized you can never just have one racehorse if you want to succeed. So we became fully integrated over the last 10 Ron Perry years,” Ranck-Perry said. “We won three maiden races in just fve starts with Ron Ellis at Hollywood Park, and we were on our way. We bought yearlings, and I bred my mare again.” Suddenly, everything came together, and the couple had He Be Fire N Ice and Tiz a Kiss back to back. He Be Fire N Ice, a California-bred son of Unusual Heat—Deputy Tombe, by Deputy Commander, broke his maiden as a 3-year-old, then was forced to an 18-month layof with a torn tendon. When he returned in 2013, the big, easily recognizable gray won three in a row, including allowance races at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park, before taking the $150,750 California Dreamin’ Handicap at Del Mar. Jumping from Cal-bred company to graded stakes races, He Be Fire N Ice fnished a narrow second in both the $200,000 Del Mar Mile Handicap (G2T) and the $150,750 City of Hope Mile Stakes (G2T) in 2013. His admirable courage earned him a spot in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1T), but he was never the same after running eighth that day. He retired with a record of fve wins, three seconds, and a third in 16 starts for earnings of $332,580, and he stands at Pat Tompson’s Ridgeley Farm in Hemet. “Tat Breeders’ Cup race was the 100th race we ever ran, so we knew how lucky we were to get that far that fast,” said Ranck-Perry. “But we are determined to make him a great stallion so we can complete our vertical integration plan. We bought broodmares that were all stakes-winning mares for

Health heat? Is he in a stressful situation—such as stalled next to an aggressive horse?” Amount of available water could also impact how much a horse eats, says Staniar. Te horse must have adequate water for proper digestion and to produce saliva, which must be mixed with feed for ease of chewing and swallowing. Feeder position might also make a difference in how well a horse eats. “Horses are either left-sided or right-sided on how they want to eat,” said Daniel J. Burke, PhD, director of equine

endorphin release, which relaxes horses, and they do better.” MEAL SIZE

Horses in natural conditions graze periodically, eating small amounts during the day and night. “Tey eat for about 14 to 18 hours out of 24 hours—many small meals,” said Staniar. “Yet when we feed horses, we are generally feeding two meals (morning and evening), or sometimes three meals. But horses are trickle feeders. Tey are

sociate eating with ulcer pain, especially when they are on higher sugar/starch diets and sweetfeeds. Tey may not eat at all, or may just eat hay and leave the grain. Often if they are put on a low-starch, high-fber feed, they start eating again. “If there is nothing clinically wrong with the horse and he simply needs to gain weight, or if he’s just fussy about what he eats, we always start with good forage as the foundation of the diet,” said McIntosh. “Green pasture grass or leafy alfalfa will be the most palatable—the best type of forage to tempt him to eat more. I’ve never seen a healthy horse turn down fresh grass because this is what the equine digestive system is designed to utilize. “Finicky eaters will generally eat fresh grass and/or alfalfa hay or alfalfa pellets. If the horse also needs a concentrate, choose something really palatable, perhaps with a bit of molasses that smells good and stimulates the horse’s appetite.” Beet pulp, which is often added to the diet with water to create a mash, can stimulate appetite. Even though it is a fbrous feed, beet pulp has more calories than hay. Increasing the grain is not a good idea because of risks for founder, sugar highs and lows, etc. Using a concentrate with more fat in it (more calories per pound) or top-dressing the grain ration with additional fat can be healthier. REASONS FOR FINICKY APPETITE

“After putting horses on many diferent diets and trying them on many diferent feeds, I’ve found that horses are often hesitant to eat something new,” said Staniar. “Part of the solution is giving the horse enough time to acclimate, introducing the new feed gradually. “In the beginning, the horse might not eat the full amount. It may take several weeks for the horse to get used to it.” Another issue is timing. When is the horse being fed in relation to exercise? “Tere are circumstances in which exercise will stimulate appetite,” said Staniar. “But exercise can also depress appetite—if the horse is working hard.” Staniar said another factor is whether the horse is in a comfortable environment where he can relax and eat. “Does he have shelter and shade? Is he able to stay cool enough that appetite won’t be impaired by 52

nutrition at Tribute Equine Nutrition. “Sometimes if you just move the feeder to a diferent location in the stall, they are more comfortable eating.” Having the feeder low rather than high can also make a diference, since it is more normal for horses to eat from the ground. “A study recently published by a research group in North Carolina showed there is some endorphin release when a horse’s head is down low in grazing position,” said Burke. “We’ve tried to mimic grazing by feeding horses on the ground—to have healthier horses. But head position during grazing also causes

meant to eat a little bit all along. When you expect a horse to eat more than fve pounds per meal (whether hay or concentrates), he may not want to eat that much at once.” Burke says racehorse trainers often want the horse to eat 10 to 15 pounds of grain. “Te horse’s stomach only holds about two gallons, and he can’t eat that much at once,” Burke said. “We frequently run into this problem with racehorses or hard keepers that are expected to eat a lot. If meal size is large, they won’t fnish it— either because of stomach capacity issues or satiety. We’ve taken horses out of their

natural environment and make them adjust to our schedule for feeding, and one way to alleviate this problem is to feed them smaller meals more often.” Feeding a thin or fnicky horse more frequently can also encourage him to eat more total food. If you can feed three or four meals per day, this stimulates the horse to come to the feed more often, and you can potentially get more calories into him. HOW TO STIMULATE APPETITE

One strategy to get a horse to eat is to improve palatability of the feed. “You can add small amounts of molasses or some other favoring the horse likes,” said Staniar. “When giving a horse fve pounds of concentrate feed, I might add a half cup of molasses at most. Tis small amount of sugar won’t have an adverse efect. “Other favors might encourage certain horses. You could try a very small amount of certain oils (purchased at the grocery store), such as anise (licorice favor) or peppermint oil, if your horse likes that. You only need a few drops to mix into the meal to give it a little favor or a pleasant odor. It might work for one horse and not another.” Other options include a little honey or molasses mixed in water, applesauce, or some apple juice. Even with metabolically challenged horses that shouldn’t eat a lot of sugar or carbohydrates, a small amount (like a teaspoon of honey) will go a long ways toward making the food more palatable without adding much sugar, according to Staniar. Some people use artifcial sweeteners mixed with a little water and poured over the food, to mask or enhance favor without adding sugar. One trick that may help a fnicky horse is to feed him last, suggests McIntosh. When he sees the other horses eating, he’ll want to eat, too. Horses are social animals and somewhat competitive, so feeding the others may stimulate the fussy one. “Anything you can do to reduce volume of feed will help, if a horse doesn’t want to eat very much,” said McIntosh. “Adding concentrated calorie sources like vegetable oil is benefcial. If a horse doesn’t like the taste of oil, you might use products like Cool Calories, which is a powdered fat

FAT CONTENT It’s diffcult to get enough grain into hard-working horses, some broodmares, and some hard keepers that need to eat more. Increasing fat content is a way to add more calories without risk of colic or laminitis. “We played around with our racehorse feeds when we were developing them, looking at fat content,” said Daniel J. Burke, PhD. “We found that the higher-fat feeds tend to make the horse feel satiated more quickly. Adding fat is a good way to get extra calories into the horse, but if there’s too much fat, the horse feels full quicker. It’s like a person eating ice cream; there comes a point where you just can’t eat any more. “I did my PhD work on highfat diets for horses. We started our racehorse feed with 10% fat content. The trainers we were working with were feeding 12 to 15 pounds per day, which is a huge amount, and the horses wouldn’t fnish the meal. So we backed the fat content off to 8%, and horses would fnish it. “There’s a lot of individual difference, however, in how horses respond to fat. So you have to fnd the proper solution for each horse.”

We don’t know why a horse might prefer one type of feed over another. Tey do have preferences, and we don’t always understand what drives those preferences.” —Burt Staniar, equine nutritionist

supplement with favoring.” Rice bran is also a good fat source, and most horses like the taste of it better than oil. Depending on the horse and how much weight he needs to gain, you can feed up to two or three pounds of rice bran per day.

Te trend today is a low-sugar/lowstarch diet. “You can’t accomplish this with a traditional sweetfeed with molasses, oats, and corn,” said Burke. “Te low-sugar/low-starch meal has to be pelleted, and there can’t be much molasses in it. Te trick there is favor. We use a variety of favors, but the classic one is anise. We came out with a feed we call banana treat, based on research that found banana to be one of horses’ preferred favors. “Our biggest selling feed is a low-starch, low-sugar feed, favored with anise. Tere is no sugar in it, but it has the same calorie content as oats. If horses are coming of a bag of sweet feed and put on this feed, however, they won’t eat it for a while just because it’s diferent.” You may have to experiment with different feeds to see what the horse likes better. “We don’t know why a horse might prefer one type of feed over another,” said Staniar. “Tey do have preferences, and we don’t always understand what drives those preferences.” MIX FEEDS WHEN CHANGING

“Horses often develop a sweet tooth on the sweet feeds, and prefer them,” said Burke. “So it takes a while to switch them to something else. It helps to mix the old feed with the new, and gradually change to the new one.” Make changes gradually, not only to get the horse accustomed to the new taste, texture, etc., but also to give the GI tract time to adjust to digesting something diferent. “We recommend taking several weeks to make the switch,” said Burke. “If you start the new feed on Saturday, for instance, make a change in the mix each week. Te frst week, mix 75% of the original feed and 25% of the new feed. Te next week mix it 50-50, and the third week 25% original feed and 75% of the new, and by the fourth week switch over to the new feed. You could probably make these changes every four or fve days, but weeks are easy to remember and you can be assured that you’ve given the horse enough time to adjust to the new diet.” Bill Vandergrift, PhD, an equine nu(continued on page 56)

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through March 19, 2017.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
