he strength of the California-bred program in the commercial market has never been more evident than at the recent Barretts 2-year-olds in training sale held last month. As depicted on the cover of this edition of California Toroughbred, a Lucky Pulpit Cal-bred was the top-selling flly at the premier venue, fetching $360,000. Te chestnut flly, named Californiabyanose, had been previously ofered for sale as a yearling at both the CTBA Northern California sale (RNA $14,000) and at the Barretts October sale, where she was purchased for $42,000 to be pinhooked by John Brocklebank. After working the fastest eighth-mile at the March preview, she was ultimately purchased by agent Dennis O’Neill. With a multitude of lucrative restricted and open racing opportunities, plus the many Cal-bred incentives, it has become increasingly easier to justify high-end sales prices for quality California-breds. Te implementation of the Golden State Series of stakes races and the maiden bonus program, over the past half-decade, has indeed assisted with the strong demand. As the prices for in-training Cal-breds continue to escalate, the yearling prices have trailed behind, as end users are fo-

cusing more on the proven horse. Te recent pinhooking successes, however, should ultimately beneft the California yearling market, as the demand would fuel more competition among buyers and thus generate higher average and median prices.

Whether someone breeds to sell or to race, our goal at the CTBA is to continue to protect and grow the opportunities and fnancial rewards available for California-breds in order to enhance the conditions of those involved in the production of horses in the Golden State. With the Barretts May 2-year-old sale this month, and the yearling sales scheduled this summer and fall, the marketing focus of CTBA will be to continue to showcase the benefts of the Cal-bred program. At $30 million annually, it is arguably one of the best state-bred programs in the country. Recently, the CTBA dispersed 887 breeder award checks totaling nearly $4.6 million for 2016. Factoring in the total breeder qualifying earnings for the year, the fnal breeder award dividend percentage was 10.8%. Terefore, as breeders, individuals had nearly an 11% investment in horses they bred that fnished frst, second, or third in any race in California in 2016. Also, 97 stallion award checks were dispersed totaling more than $1.5 million for the year. Te stallion award dividend percentage was 8.8%. Tese award amounts are based on handle, which was relatively level with the prior year. All breeder and stallion award earners are listed, beginning on page 42.

CAL-BRED STARS AT CARMA HORSE SHOW California-bred Montana Soul was one of several former racehorses to win major classes at the March 25-26 Toroughbred Classic Horse Show. Sponsored by the Siegel CARMA (California Retirement Management Account) Foundation, it was held at Galway Downs near Temecula. Montana Soul, owned by Tom Trahey and ridden by Melissa Torson, won the $1,000 Event Challenge. CalMont Toroughbreds bred Montana Soul, a son of Soul of the Matter—Big Sky Queen, by Digression. Competitors at the horse show came from all over California, as well as from Utah, Nevada, and Montana. “I’m thrilled with the outpouring of support we received for this show,” said Lucinda Mandella, CARMA’s executive director, “especially since we drew competitors from out of state to showcase their Toroughbreds with us. Combined with the traditional local support, I was so happy we were able to host our largest show to date.” Te next TCHS show is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 9-10 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank.

10 YEARS AGO Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and jockey Russell Baze were a lethal combination for decades in Northern California. Among their victories together was the 2007 Work the Crowd Handicap for California-breds at Golden Gate Fields with Somethinaboutlaura. The 5-year-old daughter of Dance Floor—Crystals of Ice, by It’s Freezing, took the May 13 stakes as a huge 1-10 favorite. Somethinaboutlaura led throughout the 11⁄16 miles on the turf to score by two lengths over Gentle Charmer in 1:43.50. Lilley Ranch bred the mare, and Hollendorfer owned her in partnership with Charles Miller, John Sikura, and George Todaro. Somethinaboutlaura went on to earn $1,129,365.

25 YEARS AGO Caliche’s Secret sped to the front early in the Gold Rush Handicap May 18, 1991, and no one could catch him. The California-bred gelding won the Golden Gate Fields stakes by two lengths over Infamous Deed, with Sounds Fabulous third, and he completed the 11⁄16 miles in 1:40.90. Tony Diaz, who also broke Caliche’s Secret, piloted him for trainer Bob Hess Sr. The secret to the victory may have been to eliminate the whip. Hess said that the gelding “loses his action when you hit him.” Mr. and Mrs. Van Rose bred Caliche’s Secret, a son of Really Secret—Caliche, by Apalachee, and James and Judith Huarte owned him. The gelding went on to earn $212,475.

50 YEARS AGO In the space of 35 days in 1966, California-bred Carang captured two stakes at Golden Gate Fields. Following his victory in the April 1 Berkeley Handicap, Carang added the Golden Gate Handicap May 6. The 5-year-old horse got up in the fnal strides of the Golden Gate Handicap to defeat Lucky P.J. by a neck. Carang completed the 11⁄8 miles in 1:474⁄5. Merlin Volzke rode him to both wins. Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Forno bred and raced Carang, a son of Terrang—Mama Mouse, by Duplicator. C.A. Roles trained him. The horse earned a total of $124,522.

Owners and trainers who take advantage of Del Mar’s popular Ship & Win program can earn more money this year than in the past. Back for its seventh season this summer at Del Mar, the Ship & Win program has increased the additional amount a horse can earn in its frst start from $1,000 to $1,500. Te program also includes a 30% purse bonus of the horse’s purse earnings in that race. Del Mar began the Ship & Win program in 2011 to increase feld size, attracting more than 800 imports since the program began. Tose imports made more than 1,300 starts at Del Mar. Te majority of those horses remained in California to continue racing after the Del Mar meeting. “Ship & Win is a winner all around for everyone involved in it,” said David Jerkens, Del Mar’s racing secretary. “We want our local owners and trainers to see it as an opportunity that can work to their advantage in two ways—for personal gain and for upgrading racing in the state. We also want racing outfts across the country to know that we’ve got open arms for those with runners at all levels to come be part of one of our sport’s best circuits.” Ship & Win horses must adhere to a few basic rules: An eligible horse must have made his or her last start outside California and cannot have raced in the state within the past 12 months. First-time starters are not eligible. All stakes runners are eligible to receive the $1,500 starter fee, but no stakes runners—including those in overnight stakes—are eligible for the 30% purse bonus. California-breds are eligible to this program, provided they follow the above rules. Cal-breds have the added advantage of the many purse bonuses already in place for them.

GREGSON FOUNDATION TO BE BREEDERS’ CUP BENEFICIARY The Edwin J. Gregson Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the quality of life for California backstretch workers and their families, will be an offcial benefciary of the 2017 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, to be held this year at Del Mar. Old Friends Farm, an organization devoted to retired Thoroughbred racehorses, is the other benefciary. Breeders’ Cup and Maker’s Mark made the announcement. Named for the late trainer Eddie Gregson, the Gregson Foundation annually raises money for college scholarships that over the years have gone to numerous children of backstretch workers. The foundation was established in 2000. Other foundation programs include English as a second language literacy classes, as well as recreational and sports activities. Racing fans can support both causes and receive a limited edition, commemorative Maker’s Mark bottle that honors 1995 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Cigar by making a donation and attending the Champions for Charity event during Breeders’ Cup week in Del Mar. Details will be available this summer at BreedersCup.com/ChampionsForCharity. “The Edwin J. Gregson Foundation is proud and excited to work with Breeders’ Cup, Maker’s Mark, and Old Friends to raise funds for retired racehorses, as well as their dedicated and worthy caretakers, for whom this industry is so much indebted,” said Jenine Sahadi, president of the Gregson Foundation.

Larry and Marianne Williams’ homebred Tamarando is standing his frst season at stud at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga. The California-bred grade 1 winner takes earnings of $722,652 to stud, along with a record of four wins in 31 starts, with three seconds and seven thirds. A son of champion Cal-bred Bertrando, Tamarando earned a Cal-bred championship at 2, when he won the Del Mar Futurity (G1). He came into the race off his maiden victory, closing tremendous ground to post a half-length win. Later in the year he added the Real Quiet Stakes, and he was voted the year’s champion state-bred 2-year-old male. At 3, Tamarando captured the El Camino Real Derby (G3). He placed in three other stakes, including the 2013 FrontRunner Stakes (G1) and CashCall

Futurity (G1). Tamarando is out of grade 2-placed Tamarack Bay, a daughter of Dehere. Tamarack Bay has also produced stakes winners Luckarack and U’narack and stakes-placed Tamarack Smarty, Pulmarack, and Ward ’n Jerry. Tamarando stands for $2,500 live foal.

Stimulus Plan and Empire of D’Nile were represented by their frst foals within days of each other. Both stallions stand at Richill Farms in Phelan. Stimulus Plan’s frst foal arrived March 29. The winning Aptitude mare Tudie Pop foaled a bay colt, also her frst. According to Richard and Hilary Trower, owners of Richill Farms, the colt “stands up and over a good bit of ground.” Just over a week later, April 7, Empire of D’Nile’s frst foal appeared. Also a colt, the youngster is out of the Forestry mare Forest Trees, and he is her frst foal. The Trowers reported that the colt “is a very leggy and bold bay.” Stimulus Plan is an 11-year-old multiple graded stakes-placed son of Jump Start—Dutchess Alexandra, by Judge Smells. He earned $299,632. Empire of D’Nile is an unraced 4-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile—Beauty School, by Private School.

Owner Conference at BreedersÕ Cup

Doug Utley Trainer Doug Utley died in Utah March 18 at age 79 after a long battle with cancer. Based in Northern California for many years, Utley won more than 1,200 races and had purse earnings of nearly $18 million. Many of Utley’s best horses were California-breds. With Cal-bred Don Alberto, Utley won the 1979 Thanksgiving Day Handicap (G3) at Bay Meadows. Other Cal-bred stakes winners he trained included Amy Louise, Valley Land, Position’s Best, and Quite Extrordinary.

Walt Trobee Longtime owner Walt Trobee died March 26 in Citrus Heights. He was just two months short of his 90th birthday. His survivors include his wife, Barbara. Trobee’s horses raced throughout California, as well as in Idaho and Arizona. They included California-bred Bank Burglar. The Trobees also bred horses in California, campaigning the likes of homebred Miss Carmichael.

Jane Driggers Proctor Former jockey Jane Driggers Proctor died April 17. She was 61. Proctor was the wife of Harry “Hap” Proctor, who trained and then for many years managed Leonard Lavin’s Glen Hill Farm in Ocala, Fla. She was also the sister-in-law of trainer Tom Proctor and daughter-in-law of the late trainer Willard Proctor Under her maiden name of Driggers, Jane became one of the early female jockeys in the U.S. She grew up in Canby, Ore., and frst began riding races at Oregon tracks in 1972. She was the frst female jockey to win a stakes in Oregon when she piloted Martin’s Lemon to a track-record victory in the 1973 Portland Meadows Marathon. She rode in Washington state as well, where she was named the Inland Northwest Woman Athlete of the Year by the Spokane Sports Writers and Broadcasters. In the late 1970s, Jane rode regularly in Northern California, and she met Hap while riding there. She retired to become a fulltime exercise rider in 1983, and she married Hap in 1984.

Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith and Arrogate received recognition from the California Senate and Assembly April 17. Assemblyman Adam Gray, chair of the Assembly Governmental Organization Committee, invited Smith to the Assembly foor. Gray introduced the jockey and spoke about some of the highlights of his career and his winning ride on Arrogate in the Dubai World Cup (G1). Gray honored Smith and Arrogate by introducing Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR) 63, recognizing their great achievements and the importance of Toroughbred racing in California. Following a brief photo op, Smith headed to the Senate Chambers. Steve Glazer, chair of the Senate Governmental Organization Committee, read of Smith’s many accomplishments and presented Smith with a Senate Resolution.

Who was Carleton F. Burke and why is the California Toroughbred Foundation library named after him? Anyone who visits the library, which sits in the center of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association building, can see a bust of Burke on display. One of the many pieces of art the Foundation owns, it has a unique history. Burke served as the frst chairman of the California Horse Racing Board once racing had been re-established in California in the 1930s. He later served as the secretary-treasurer of the CTBA and Santa Anita’s director of racing. Burke donated the bust to the CTBA, along with many of his pictures, books, albums, and historical papers. Canpajola B. Aires sculpted the bust, dated 1932. Its inscription commemorates the piece as from the Argentinean Polo Association, a sport that Burke loved. A member of the Midwick Country Club polo team of the early 1920s, Burke, as captain, led the team to the National Junior Championship and the National Open Championship. Burke’s polo playing dated back to 1908, and his ponies were considered to be among the Carleton F. Burke most efcient in the game. Burke and his wife, Myrtle, for many years bred Toroughbreds at their Greenfeld Farm in Hidden Valley, Calif. He stood stallions and was a frequent consignor to CTBA sales. He loved the CTBA library and could often be found there researching racing and breeding. Tus, after Burke died at age 79 in 1962, it was decided to name the library the Carleton F. Burke Memorial Library. Te bust was part of the March 6, 1964, library dedication, which Burke’s widow attended. “Tis dedication of the library to my husband is something I know would have touched and pleased him,” she said at the ceremony. “He would have deeply appreciated it.”

indsight is 20-20, but the fact remains that twice people had the opportunity to buy Californiabyanose as a yearling at what turned out to be a bargain price. Te daughter of Lucky Pulpit topped all other fllies and all other California-breds at the Barretts select 2-year-old sale March 29 at Del Mar, selling for $360,000.

She frst stepped into an auction ring at the 2016 California Toroughbred Breeders Association Northern California yearling sale, where she was a $14,000 buy-back. Two months later, at the Barretts October yearling sale, John Brocklebank purchased her for $42,000. Just fve months following that sale, Californiabyanose brought more than eight times her yearling price. One of the reasons she sold so well is the way she developed upon breaking and training. She not only wowed onlookers at the barn, but breezed the fastest furlong at the March 27 under-tack preview, zipping :094⁄5. Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency consigned Californiabyanose to Barretts as agent, and Dennis O’Neill purchased her for Amr Zedan, who lives

in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and London. “He’s been giving me strict instructions at each sale to buy the best horse in the sale,” said O’Neill. “I told him I really like this Lucky Pulpit. I thought she was a star on the racetrack. I looked at her all week and just fell in love with her more and more every day. She’s a very classy-looking flly.” Havens said that Californiabyanose “just does everything right.” He said that she looks like she will go on. “She’s one of the nicest I’ve sold in a long time,” he added. “She really was a special flly.” Te Cole Ranch bred Californiabyanose and consigned her to both the Northern California sale and the Bar-

retts yearling auction. She is out of the Mr. Greeley mare Nine to Five Lady, and her second dam, Ryvnine, is a full sister to Concern, winner of the 1994 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). Steve Cole, who owns the Cole Ranch with his wife, Dana, remembers the Lucky Pulpit flly well. “She was always a very good-looking flly, with good size, good conformation, and a good mind,” he said. “We kind of knew that she was relatively exceptional, but you never know that they’re going to put these times together.” Cal-breds were popular with buyers at Barretts select sale of 2-year-olds Californiabyanose brought the third-highest price overall. Willy North’s Starting Point Toroughbreds consigned the $675,000 sale-topper, a Kentucky-bred son of Malibu Moon out of the Indian Charlie mare Indian Breeze. Te mare won the 2005 Landaluce Stakes at Hollywood Park and fnished third in the 2007 Green Flash Handicap at Del Mar. West Point Toroughbreds and Spendthrift Farm purchased the sale topper. Hal Earnhardt bred Indian Charlie in California, and the horse won four races in California, including the 1998 Santa Anita Derby (G1). Indian Charlie was also the broodmare sire of the second-highest-priced horse in the Barretts sale, a Kentucky-bred son of Candy Ride—Gottahaveadream. Kings Californiabyanose, top-priced flly at Barretts, posted fastest furlong breeze of :094⁄5 Equine sold the colt for $400,000 to Susumu Hayashi of Japan. Te sale increased in average 21% over 2016, to $150,600, with 45 grossing $6,777,000. Te median remained the same as last year, at $100,000, and the sale had a buy-back rate of 29.7%, with 19 of the 64 through the ring not selling. “We were thrilled with the sale,” said Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts. “Te whole vibe of our preview this year was very positive. Te horses went well; they looked well breezing on the track; and we had a big turnout. People liked what they saw.” Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables, a Florida consignor, led all other sellers with 11 bringing $1,880,000. Second was California-based Bruno DeBerdt’s Excel Bloodstock, which sold six horses for $1,115,000. Also among the top 10 consignors were California-based Havens Bloodstock and Adrian Gonzalez’s Checkmate A Malibu Moon colt consigned by Starting Point Thoroughbreds topped the sale at $675,000 Toroughbreds.

TRAVELING MAN PATRICK MACKEY: THE JOURNEY OF A RACING ROUSTABOUT BY JACK SHINAR

atrick Mackey may have fnally found his sweet spot where the “Bay Comes to Play.”

Racing secretary at Golden Gate Fields for the past three years, Mackey has unique insight into jobs around the track and conditions at other racetracks. Tat’s because he’s tried a lot of them. Born into a racing family in Flint, Mich., he’s spent virtually all of his 40 years immersed in the sport. A soft-spo-

ken man, the burly Mackey practically grew up hanging out in jockeys’ rooms and racing ofces. His grandfather, Oscar, was a starter and racing ofcial, and later a trainer at several tracks including Tampa Bay Downs. His father, Michael, was a top racing executive, managing tracks such as Tistledown, Hialeah Park, Tampa Bay Downs, Detroit Race Course, and Arapahoe Park during a career of more than four decades. “We bounced around the country my whole life,” Mackey said of his father and

mother, Nellie; his older brother, Michael Jr.; and his three sisters. “I think that as a kid, the adventures of traveling around from track to track were wonderful.” Following his dad’s advice, Mackey has worked almost every job he could—from valet parking attendant, program seller, and backstretch groom to track announcer (for one day), to his current position. As Golden Gate’s racing secretary, he oversees the ofce that handles daily operations, working with top horsemen at Northern California’s only nearly year-round Toroughbred racetrack. “He’d say, ‘You have to know every job on the track to know what all goes into it,’ “ Mackey said. “I idolized my father and grandfather. I loved the track and knew from the time I was 14 or 15— probably before then—that I wanted to follow my dad’s footsteps and get into a management role at some time. I used to

But it didn’t take. “I spent way too much time going to Keeneland instead of class—I was only fve miles away,” Mackey said of his time at UK. “So instead of wasting my parents’ money in Kentucky, which was out of state, I transferred to Ohio State and went there for a short stint.” But he received a job ofer as a claiming clerk at Hialeah, and he quickly scooped it up.

I spent a lot of time around horsemen, so I understood it.” Tat proved to be time well spent, he believes. “It’s sort of nice that every place I went, I did diferent jobs,” Mackey said, “stakes coordinator, racing secretary, paddock judge, placing judge, scales clerk, steward. Everyone who works for me, I’ve done that job in the afternoon. One, it’s nice that I can fll in if I have to, and two, I know what they are going through. It’s one of those things when you are brought up at a racetrack, you just do what has to be done.” He’s still learning new things. When Golden Gate’s media relations director Sam Spear was forced to take some time of recently due to a health issue, Mackey stepped in to handle the nightly race recap show on a local television station. He also helped fll in on Spear’s Sunday morning radio show on KNBR. “I told Sam, ‘I got a face for radio. I don’t think you want me on TV.’ But I jumped right in, and I know at least my daughter loved it.” Mackey and his wife, Shannon, a former school teacher in Arlington Heights, Ill., and their 7-year-old daughter, Tallulah, live in a small house in El Cerrito, a town located on the bay a few miles north of the track. By his count, he’s had 34 diferent jobs at racetracks in at least 10 states. Golden Gate is his 23rd racetrack. But when he interviewed with Te Stronach Group at Santa Anita for a position at one of the organization’s West Coast racing ofces late in December 2013, he had never before stepped foot in the Golden State. His father’s racing journey began in Michigan, where the elder Mackey worked for AutoTote Corp., the pari-mutuel wagering equipment company, before becoming one of the youngest racing secretaries in the country at Tistledown, near Cleveland, in the 1960s. Michael Mackey became general manager at Tampa Bay Downs, where he worked for George Steinbrenner, and went from there to Hialeah Park, where he was vice president and general manager. Te family

“I’ve always called Cleveland home,” Mackey said. “We stayed there longer than most places. Basically, I was a kid growing up at Tistledown. I went to the track every day.” As a youngster, he remembers playing pool in the jocks’ room after school at Detroit Race Course and learning to drive at the age of 10 or 11 in the track parking lot. At Tistledown, “I sold programs, worked in the parking lot, did odd jobs, worked in the stalls on the backside; any job I could fnd, I would do,” he said. He tried college, majoring in business management, frst attending the University of Kentucky and later, Ohio State Uniwww.ctba.com

“I know I wasn’t getting anywhere in school, and I knew I wanted to work at the racetrack. And it was Hialeah, and it was beautiful.” Mackey cobbled together year-round employment working at Calder Race Course as a track cameraman and at Gulfstream Park as a mutuel clerk. But when Sam Abbey, the racing secretary at Hialeah, asked him to go to Atlantic City to work in the racing ofce there, he agreed. Tat led to further work on the western Massachusetts fair circuit, with stops at such out-of-the-way places as Great Barrington and Northampton. Tough he worked in the racing ofces, he said, “you

basically do all the jobs.” “It was like the Wild West—people living in tents on the backside—but it was a lot of fun,” Mackey recalled. By 1998, his father had left Tistledown to open a new track in Michigan, Great Lakes Downs. Mackey joined him as the assistant racing secretary and placing judge. He also produced a tip sheet and the morning line. At Great Lakes Downs, Mackey was pressed into service for a night of racecalling that he’ll never forget. “It was instant shell shock. I said ‘Tey’re of,’ and I don’t think I said another word. I loosened up a little by the end of the night, but it was a difcult job. It didn’t help that I was also the placing judge and was running the tote board and the photo fnish camera at the same time.” Mackey would later leave Great Lakes Downs and get out of the racing business for a short time, going to work on the foor of the Chicago Board of Options, running exchange slips with the intention of becoming a trader. He said the fast pace appealed to him and his experience in racing with quickly processing numbers helped him succeed. But he missed racing, so when an old friend from now-defunct Sportsman’s Park ofered him a job as claims clerk, he took it. He also went to work at nearby Hawthorne Race Course. His old mentor, Abbey, gave Mackey summer work at Delaware Park, so he spent a few years shuttling between Chicago and Wilmington before going to work at Arlington Park as the stakes coordinator in 2005. He later became assistant racing secretary there. About the same time, he landed a winter position as assistant racing secretary for Magna Entertainment Corp. (later Te Stronach Group) at Gulfstream. He moved back and forth between Arlington and Gulfstream until 2009, when Magna convinced him to become a steward back at Tistledown. Tat only lasted a year before Mackey decided to return to Gulfstream. “I’m more into the fast-paced action of the (racing) ofce, and working as a steward was a lot of sitting and waiting for something to happen,” Mackey explained. 22

“It’s a great job and I respect all stewards, but it wasn’t for me.” He later returned to Chicago, working racing assistant jobs at both Arlington and Hawthorne. Shannon was pregnant, so it made sense to settle down at the time. But within two years they were moving once again, this time to Long Island as part of the New York Racing Association team. Unfortunately, Mackey’s father had become ill with cancer, and Patrick left NYRA after two years to return to Chicago. He began working as a jockey’s agent, which aforded him the fexibility to spend time with his ailing father. He was representing such noted riders as Chris Emigh, Channing Hill, and Ariel Smith. But following his father’s death in July 2012, he was looking for something more stable when, during a visit to Gulfstream, he ran into his old NYRA boss, P.J. Campo, who had moved to Te Stronach Group. Tree months later Mackey replaced

From his ofce window today Mackey enjoys a birds-eye view of Golden Gate’s clubhouse turn and the picturesque track’s grandstand. Step out of his ofce looking to the west and he has a glorious view of the magnifcent San Francisco Bay. On a sun-drenched spring day, it’s tough to beat, he admits. “I love Northern California. My wife and daughter are very happy here. Te cost of living is terrible. Outside of that, it’s a wonderful place.” As for the future, though, Mackey says you never know what might happen working for Te Stronach Group, with its large network of racetracks. “I might be gone tomorrow, but I hope not. If they call, I’ll move; that’s for sure.”

MR. HINX PROVES VILLAINOUS IN ECHO EDDIE BY TRACY GANTZ

r. Hinx is one of those Bond villains who never stop in their pursuit of James Bond. In the movie “Spectre,” the very large Mr. Hinx pummels Bond relentlessly aboard a train until fnally getting his comeuppance.

Gary Barber, as chairman and CEO of MGM Studios, now oversees the James Bond flms. After his mare Kitten Exchange foaled a large son of Ministers Wild Cat at Tommy Town Toroughbreds April 10, 2014, Barber decided to call him Mr. Hinx. “Tis horse was so big,” said Barber. “Mr. Hinx was the bad guy in ‘Spectre,’ and Dave Bautista was the actor who played Hinx.” Bautista, a former professional wrestler, is listed as 6’ 6” and 290 pounds. More recently he is known for playing Drax the Destroyer in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie franchise. Mr. Hinx the horse didn’t destroy his competition in the $200,000 Echo Eddie Stakes at Santa Anita April 8, but he got the job done nevertheless.

“Gary told me the day he was born that he was sending me a good horse,” said trainer Steve Miyadi. “A lot of owners tell you that, but Gary Barber is a man of his word.” Unraced at 2, Mr. Hinx broke his maiden in his frst start Jan. 8 at Santa Anita. His connections thought so highly of him that they entered him in the California Cup Derby, where he ran fourth behind King Glorious Stakes winner Ann Arbor Eddie, California-bred champion California Diamond, and Tribal Storm. Switched to turf, Mr. Hinx scored a victory in state-bred allowance optional claiming competition. When the gelding returned to dirt against open competition, he ran fourth to another set of good horses—Battle of Midway and Reach the World, subsequently second and fourth in the Santa Anita Derby (G1), and the flly Vexatious, who in her next start fnished third in the TwinSpires.com Fair Grounds Oaks (G2). California Diamond went of as the 6-5 favorite in the Echo Eddie at 61⁄2 furlongs on the dirt for Cal-breds and California-sired horses. B Squared set the pace as jockey Tyler Baze kept Mr. Hinx in close contention. Tough the fractions were a quick :22.20 and :45.06, Mr. Hinx had enough in reserve to collar B Squared in midstretch and hold on for a nose victory over that rival in 1:17.09. Tribal Storm fnished third. “He’s a very nice horse with so much talent,” said Baze. “I haven’t gotten to the bottom of him yet, but I know that there’s a lot there and he’s learning.” Long a major owner, Barber is becoming more involved in breeding. He and Tommy Town stand Boisterous in California, and Barber also has interests in the Kentucky stallions Tourist and Jack Milton. Tat could certainly lead to a host of James Bond-related names in the future.

S Y Sky’s racing debut resulted in a stakes victory for Nick Alexander’s Cal-homebred

ick Alexander didn’t want to debut S Y Sky at too short a distance. Santa Anita had carded a California-bred maiden race for fllies and mares April 9 at 51⁄2 furlongs. Alexander instead looked at the $200,000 Evening Jewel Stakes the day before at 61⁄2 furlongs. Te Evening Jewel pitted S Y Sky against her own state-bred 3-year-old age group instead of her elders, but she had to face fllies with considerably more racing experience. Her seven rivals had made from three to 12 starts apiece, and all but one had won, four of them multiple times. “Nick liked her, even before I had her in

the barn,” said trainer Phil D’Amato. “He was telling me that he thought she was one of his best fllies. He’s the one who twisted my arm to go into this race.” Alexander has wildly succeeded with his stallion Grazen, the sire of S Y Sky, and the cross with the Sky Mesa mare Sky Marni had worked before. S Y Sky’s 5-year-old Cal-bred full brother, Grazen Sky, won the 2015 Silky Sullivan Stakes, has placed in six other stakes, and had earned $412,638 lifetime through early April. “We claimed that mare for $16,000 and only got one race out of her,” said Alexander of Sky Marni. “She’s been a heckuva broodmare.” S Y Sky didn’t come into the Evening Jewel via a perfect training regimen. Alexander admitted that she hadn’t quite taken to the starting gate.

“She had one gate move where she didn’t want to come out at all,” he said. But D’Amato’s team worked with her, and Alexander said he was “thrilled in the paddock—she acted like an older horse.” Miss Sunset, winner of the open Sweet Life Stakes Feb. 12, went of as the 3-5 favorite. S Y Sky hadn’t gone unnoticed, however, as she was the 6-1 third choice. Miss Sunset set the early pace from the outside post, while S Y Sky and jockey Joe Talamo raced four wide down the backstretch in third. “She broke very alertly,” said Talamo. “We were able to sit right of the pace, right of the outside flly, who went to the front. I just kind of let her have her head, let her do her thing.” Tat “thing” meant taking over the lead early in the stretch and drawing of to a 51⁄2-length victory over Radish, who closed for second. Miss Sunset fnished third. S Y Sky stopped the clock in 1:17.52. “I fgured she’s a big, long-striding girl; she’ll come from out of it,” said Alexander. Talamo had high praise for her, saying, “She’s a very special flly. It’s obviously very rare to see a frst-timer win a stake in the fashion like she did. She is very classy.”

Hollendorfer has such talented distafers in his barn as champion Songbird and multiple graded winner Unique Bella, and he had high praise for Sircat Sally. “I’m very grateful to have a flly like her,” said the trainer. “She can do just about anything—she has speed and she can run long. You can’t ask any more than that from any horse.” Even in graded company, Sircat Sally went favored. When Beau Recall got loose while warming up on the backstretch and had to be scratched, Sircat Sally’s odds dropped even lower, to 3-10. Another Hall of Famer, Mike Smith, piloted Sircat Sally. It helped that Sircat Sally is equally adept at dirt or turf. She could race against Cal-breds at 61⁄2 furlongs on the dirt in the Evening Jewel or stretch out to 11⁄8 miles on turf in the Providencia Stakes (G3T), both races part of the April 8 Santa Anita card that featured the Santa Anita Derby (G1). Ironically, with the strength of the Golden State Series, the Evening Jewel ofered a bigger purse: $200,000 vs. the Providencia’s $150,345. But graded status boosts any horse’s value and can be especially lucrative in a prospective broodmare. Owner/breeder Joe Turner isn’t yet contemplating Sircat Sally’s next career, however. After all, she’s proving outstanding at her current one. “Tis means everything to me,” said Turner. “I’ve never been in this situation before.” Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer trains Sircat Sally for 30

Well, the once up-and-coming Flavien Prat has indeed “arrived” — in the biggest way imaginable in horse racing. In his two years full time in the United States, the young French-born jockey has ridden a multitude of stakes winners, takes riding calls from a number of high-profle trainers, and has a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Championships. In addition, he has overcome a major injury and become bilingual. Tat’s quite a record already for the hard-working rider, who gets good grades from those seeking his skills for their topof-the-line equine athletes. Tat list of trainers includes Hall of Famers Richard Mandella, Jerry Hollendorfer, and Bob Bafert, as well as prominent conditioners Peter Eurton, Doug O’Neill, John Sadler,

Phil D’Amato, and Peter Miller. Prat numbers several stakes-winning California-breds among his top horses, headed by Ashleyluvssugar, winner of the 2017 California Cup Turf Classic presented by City National Bank and the 2016 Cal-bred champion turf horse; Richard’s Boy, winner of the Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint, and Gold Rush Dancer, Cal-bred champion 3-year-old male of 2016. Prat did some preliminary work in Southern California prior to making his permanent move in 2015 by galloping horses during two winters each for trainers Leonard Powell and Mandella. He had some experience in France, rising to be second rider for the Wertheimer brothers behind famed Olivier Peslier, but he came to the United States as something of an unknown when Powell took him under his wing. During the 2016 Del Mar meeting Prat tied for the riding title with multiple winner Rafael Bejarano, and he apparent-

ly was on his way to being the track’s fall meet champ before an injury took him out of action. Prat’s earlier work with Mandella paved the way for him to get multiple rides in the Hall of Famer’s barn, one of which became historic. Tat came on May 2, 2015, when he rode Catch a Flight to victory in Santa Anita’s Precisionist Stakes (G3) to give Mandella his 2,000th career victory. It also marked Prat’s frst graded stakes win in the U.S. Also for Mandella, Prat captured 2016 graded stakes aboard Avenge (the John C. Mabee Stakes [G2T] at Del Mar, and Rodeo Drive Stakes [G1T] at Santa Anita), and the 2017 Buena Vista Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita with Wild At Heart. He came back with Avenge to fnish third in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T), beaten just a hair over a length. Prat did make his mark in the Breeders’ Cup by bringing Obviously home frst in the Turf Sprint (G1T) for his debut victory in the championships. His efort won “the ride of a lifetime” praise from Anthony Fanticola, half of Obviously’s owner partnership with Joseph Scardino. In addition, the 24-year-old rode Cavale Doree to third place in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T), leaving little doubt that Prat had arrived. As well as having to learn English, Prat had to become an ardent student of the nuances of racing in America, worlds apart from the way riders ply their trade in Europe. Riding mainly in France but also in Germany and Italy, Prat mastered right-hand turns, undulating turf courses, longer distances, and a slower pace. In the U.S., Prat has needed to master left-hand turns, a much speedier pace, fat tracks, shorter races, and a preponderance of races on dirt. Prat, whose English is good but with a bit of a French twist, explained that training is quite diferent, too, mostly because in France horses are not trained on a track but on long gallops over natural terrain that sometimes includes wooded areas.

Te horses go out in large sets – sometimes as many as 20 at a time – and they stay out much longer, sometimes up to an hour. Another major diference in the sport across the Atlantic is the need for travel to various racing venues. Prat outlined a rider’s day in France thusly: “We would gallop in the morning and be done by 10:30. Ten you have to travel for maybe an hour, two hours, maybe even three hours to get to the racetracks. So it depends on where the races are as to how long it takes to travel. In France, we don’t race by meetings but by individual tracks. “In England, riders often have to travel more because some tracks run at night so a rider might have rides at two tracks during a day.” Here’s what he says about his American experience: “I love it here. As I said, it’s a diferent way to do things, but that’s the way I like it. Life is easier. You get up in the morning, and (the training period) is not as long as it is in France. And you get Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 34

So you can be refreshed and ready for the end of the week.” Success with Cal-breds has made Prat feel that “a really good Cal-bred can easily compete with horses that regularly run in open races.” And, he added, “When they run in races just for Cal-breds, that’s a really good deal for them.” He points to Ashleyluvssugar as an example of a Calbred who can compete with the best in open company. “Winning a riding title is always a goal for a rider,” he said. “Right now, I’ve been doing well; riding good horses for good trainers. Tat’s what you need

to win the title.” He might even have a chance to ride in Triple Crown races this year, thanks to his call on Iliad, who won the San Vicente Stakes (G2) and fnished second to Mastery in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita. Of the circuit’s riders, he said, “I see a lot of good riders and I learn from them, but I stay with my own style. Competition is tough, and that’s why you try to do your best. You always try to improve.” As for learning English, he said, “When I came here, I knew no English, and it wasn’t easy because you have to speak to people after the races and it’s not easy to be understandable. When I broke my back [as a result of a spill at Los Alamitos in September 2015], I used my time of to start learning. Watching TV and listening to people talk helps, too. Tat way you can try to improve and try to speak better.” He doesn’t have any trouble these days speaking in the winner’s circle.

arretts May 2-year-old sale has long been a bonanza of stakes winners, with many talented horses coming out of that auction over the years. California-breds have made up many of those success stories.

Take, for example, California Diamond, the champion Cal-bred 2-year-old male of 2016. After going through yearling sales in Washington and at Barretts, he was a $60,000 RNA at last year’s Barretts May sale. Trainer John Brocklebank consigned California Diamond to the May sale. When the colt didn’t sell, Brocklebank continued training him and they won the Santa Anita Juvenile Stakes. California Diamond, as part of the Havens Bloodstock Agency consignment, sold for $125,000 at the 2016 Barretts Del Mar paddock sale to Rockingham Ranch. From there the colt proceeded to reel of three more stakes victories, culminating in his championship. One of those stakes was the Barretts Juvenile Stakes, a perk of going through a Barretts auction. Los Alamitos conducts the Barretts Juvenile and Debutante Stakes during its September race meeting. California Diamond earned $56,000 for his 11⁄4-length victory, while the Ohio-bred flly Bitzka, a $47,000 May graduate, more than paid for herself when she earned $56,000 in the Debu36

tante with a smart 51⁄4–length score for Hronis Racing and John Sadler. Another Cal-bred stakes winner to come out of the May sale is Long Hot Summer, winner of the 2014 Generous Portion Stakes and a half sister to California champion Pacifc Heat. Long Hot Summer sold for $260,000 at the 2014 May sale. Tis year’s edition is scheduled for May 17 at Del Mar, with the training preview slated for May 15. Tough the sale is primarily for 2-year-olds, with supplemental entries closing May 3, the catalog may include some older horses of racing age. As is often the case, California sires make up a signifcant portion of the May catalog. Twenty-two stallions from the Golden State were represented after entries closed. Tey range from some of the perennial leading sires to exciting newcomers whose frst crops are just reaching the races. Tough California lost Lucky Pulpit this year, the stallion dying unexpectedly in February, he has several crops still to come. Buyers will have the opportunity to purchase some of his ofspring in May. With the memory of California Chrome’s racing exploits fresh in people’s minds, these youngsters could prove popular, as demonstrated when a daughter of Lucky Pulpit topped all other fllies at the March sale for $360,000.

Pensioned Unusual Heat always ranks high on the California sire lists and particularly dominates the list of California sires of turf runners. Unusual Heat has sired the likes of Cal-bred Cheekaboo, who continues to add to her earnings of more than $300,000. Te stallion is doing well in subsequent generations as well: Masochistic, a Cal-bred champion from last year, is out of an Unusual Heat mare. California stallion Smiling Tiger’s frst foals are 2-year-olds, and their popularity at 2016 yearling sales demonstrates the high hopes many have for his success at stud. An eight-time stakes winner and millionaire, Smiling Tiger will also be represented in the May catalog. Deceased Tribal Rule, another with foals in the sale, continues to rank high on California’s sire lists. His current runners include Pee Wee Reese, an earner of $179,990. “Sydnee could just take over,” Hudson said of his assistant farm manager, Sydnee Brown. “I can’t say enough good things about her.” Brown hails from Montana, where her grandparents were into the racing game. “I grew up always around the racetrack,” Brown said. “We had Quarter Horses and Toroughbreds and raced them in Montana, Washington, and Canada. It’s a bit diferent working with the quality of horses we get in California.” Brown later ended up in Phoenix at Turf Paradise and then working on a small farm in Arizona. After the farm’s owner died, Brown saw a job advertised at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez. Brown has been Hudson’s assistant for the last four years and loves her job. “Tis place is amazing,” she said. “It’s well taken care of and a great place to work. Our clients are all good people.” Although Brown can’t plan exactly what her job entails each day — “I do anything and everything that needs to be done” — she has quickly become an irreplaceable member of the team. “Te girl is a workaholic,” Hudson said. “She loves to work. She’s super good with the mares and babies, shows the horses to the clients, and can tell who all the horses are at a distance. I tell her once a week what I need done, and she lays it all out with the crew, delegating who does what.” While many horse people have excellent equine skills, Brown has an additional attribute that sets her apart in Hudson’s mind. “Nothing rattles her,” he said. “During foaling season you see some crazy things, but Sydnee has a great mind and thinks things through. She’s a genuinely caring person, but she’s not to the extreme where she’s unrealistic about horses.”

Although longtime manager Tom Hudson isn’t planning on ever walking away from Magali Farms, he knows that if he ever has to, the sprawling ranch will be in good hands.

Brown, who has two daughters attending college, including one on a full scholarship in Montana, cites Magali stallion Richard’s Kid as her favorite horse on the farm. Te son of Lemon Drop Kid is a two-time Pacifc Classic (G1) winner, earned $2,482,259, and has been standing at Magali since the 2014 breeding season. “He’s my favorite stallion, and I love all the mares,” she said. Other stallions at Magali include Atticus, Coil, Decarchy, Roi Charmant, and Tom’s Tribute. Brown lives on the farm and is often at work before the regular 7 a.m. start time. “Anytime something is needed, she is the frst one there,” Hudson said. “She’s as hard a worker and as devoted as anyone you could ever fnd.” “Sometimes I’m here more hours than I have to be,” Brown admitted, “but I always fnd something to do.” No matter what happens during the workday, Brown is always seen smiling. “She’s even smiling when she’s angry,” Hudson quipped. “I’ve never had a client who didn’t like her. She’s a real, honest-to-God worker, and has done a great job both here and in raising her two really great kids. She’s a dream employee.”

ean Feld is on a mission to shake up the Toroughbred breeding industry, and the 30-year-old pioneer is well on his way via his Climax Stallions. Te syndicate group puts a modern twist on an old system, with new stallions in California a part of the venture. Feld was born in Pasadena and spent the majority of his childhood at Santa Anita. His father, Bob, and uncle, Jude, were both working on the track. Jude was a trainer, and Bob advised on such purchases as Breeders’ Cup Distaf (G1) winner Adoration and Hollywood Futurity (G1) hero Siphonic. Te younger Feld won’t even admit to his age when he started walking hots at the track – “I was probably not legally allowed to yet” – but a career in racing was always in the cards for him. “Other than mowing people’s lawns and a random babysitting job, I’ve only ever had jobs in the industry,” Feld said. While in high school, he spent summers in Kentucky working at 505 Farms and later worked as a jockey’s agent at Del Mar. While attending the University of Kentucky, he worked in the press box at Keeneland and has been

working sales since 2003. “Te very frst sale I ever worked was the CTBA Del Mar yearling sale for Gayle Van Leer,” Feld recalled. “Leave Me Alone was in our consignment.” California-bred Leave Me Alone went on to win the grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga and earn $653,300 with fve wins in 18 starts. Feld graduated during the economic downturn in 2009, and despite all of his experience, he could not fnd a job. “Te business was in disarray,” he said. “I took a commission job for Walmac selling stallion seasons, then worked for Spendthrift for

three years. Tat’s when Bullet Train happened, and I went out on my own.” Group stakes winner Bullet Train, a three-quarter brother to the legendary runner Frankel, arrived in Kentucky from Europe under the managing eye of Feld, who received a great deal of support for standing the horse in the United States. Tat one stallion quickly evolved into Feld’s current project, Climax Stallions, which is a twist on the old way of syndicating sires. “We want to be a West Point Toroughbreds, an Eclipse Toroughbreds, or

a Team Valor, but for stallions,” said Feld. “Tey do syndicate stallions, but it’s through the farm and it’s structured, more or less for the sake of math, with 50-share syndicates. What we are doing is having 10-share syndicates, and we are the machine behind the marketing. We take care of all of the stuf into standing the stallion ourselves and outsource the farm part.” Bullet Train sold out quickly, prompting Feld to acquire another stallion. Curlin to Mischief, now standing in California, came next. “When I worked for Spendthrift, I had a big hand in buying Beholder as a yearling,” Feld said. Multiple champion Beholder earned more than $6 million while winning three Breeders’ Cup races. She is also a half sister to Into Mischief, a grade 1 winner and standout sire with three millionaires in the United States in a young career. “I was following Beholder’s career, and noticed her half brother by Curlin was really attractive. Tis was before Curlin got hot, which goes to show you how good-looking this horse was. He went through the ring for $300,000 to Juddmonte, but didn’t run. I thought he was a good prospect for a stallion, and some people told me it was the best idea I’d ever had while others said I was nuts. Tat’s all I needed to hear.” Feld spent months trying to acquire the colt, later named Curlin to Mischief, privately, but fnally had to go after him in the sales ring. “I raised $220,000 to buy him,” Feld said. “He went through the ring for $20,000. Te rest is history.” Feld shipped Curlin to Mischief to Santa Anita to go through brief training so that potential breeders could see him in action. After a month of galloping, Curlin to Mischief retired to Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel. Te son of Curlin—Leslie’s Lady, by Tricky Creek,

is standing for $3,500. “Tere might not be too many better-blooded stallions in the world,” Feld said. “He sold out very quickly.” Te excitement surrounding a young stallion is similar to that behind a yearling or an untried juvenile. “Tere’s no reason that Curlin to Mischief couldn’t be standing for $100,000 one day,” Feld said. “We’re obviously excited for various reasons.” Feld has since brought a second stallion to California, that being Kentucky transplant Haynesfeld. Te son of Speightstown—Nothing Special, by Tejabo, will stand alongside Curlin to Mischief at Rancho San Miguel for $5,000.

Haynesfeld is already an established commodity, and Feld explained that sometimes that is a safer option. “Economically, it’s just as good, if not better, than starting a stallion out fresh. Of course, people would rather buy the dream, but Haynesfeld is established and going to be at a certain level for the rest of his life.” Feld pointed out that with only two crops to run, Haynesfeld is already California’s second-leading living sire, behind only Bluegrass Cat. Te stallion was standing at Airdrie Stud when Feld purchased him. He is the sire of grade 1-placed Realm. “Our idea is that he could be the next Lucky Pulpit-type there,” Feld said. Standing stallions in California comes with a built in reward system, too. “California has such a good stallion awards program,” Feld said. Shares are still available in Haynesfeld, which Feld attributes to the fact that he was purchased midway through his second-crop season. Climax Stallions will surely add more studs in the future. “We have an open-door policy,” Feld said. “As long as you have 10% of what we’re asking, you’re in.”

California-Bred Incentive Awards

THE CAL-BRED INCENTIVE PROGRAM Questions and answers concerning California-breds and California’s lucrative incentive awards program, which was responsible for breeders, owners, and stallion owners collecting more than $10 million for 2016. WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE AWARDS?

Te breeders and owners of registered California-bred Toroughbreds and the owners of California-based stallions. WHAT ARE BREEDERS AWARDS?

A monetary award that is paid to the breeder of a registered California-bred Toroughbred fnishing frst, second, or third in any race run in California and any graded stakes races conducted within the United States. Breeders will receive 75% of the remainder of the total incentive award monies after owner awards are paid, with an individual breeder receiving a pro-rated share of this breeders fund. Te maximum purse considered earned in any qualifying race within this state shall be $330,000 for a win, $120,000 for a second, and $90,000 for a third-place fnish. Breeder awards always are paid exclusive of nomination, entry, and starting fees. WHAT ARE OWNERS AWARDS?

A monetary award that is paid to the owner of a registered California-bred Toroughbred horse that runs in qualifying races in California. Owners can receive at least a 20% bonus on the fnisher’s share for fnishing frst through ffth in an open allowance or overnight stakes race and up to a 20% bonus for fnishing frst in an open starter allowance above $15,000 and open non-maiden claiming races with a claiming price of $40,000 or greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California. Tese levels are purposely set high to encourage the ownership of high-quality runners and to restrict the number of qualifers so that the awards will function as a major incentive. Owner awards always are paid exclusive of nomination, entry, and starting fees. Tey are listed in the racing program and will be distributed at the same time as the purse by the paymaster. WHAT IS THE MAIDEN BONUS PROGRAM?

A maiden bonus award will be paid to the owner of a registered California-bred or registered California-sired foal for winning a maiden special weight race. Te bonus amount is $17,500 in Southern California and $10,000 in Northern California and at all Fair meetings throughout the state. Tese awards are paid directly to the owner approximately 45 racing days after the win. Only races at 41⁄2 furlongs or longer will qualify. WHAT ARE STALLION AWARDS?

In order to stimulate the acquisition in California of nationally prominent stallions, and retain high-caliber California stallions, monetary awards are paid annually to the owners of registered California stallions whose California-conceived or California-bred get have won a qualifying race or have fnished, frst, second, or third in a stakes race in the state or any graded stakes race within the United States during the year. Qualifying races are any non-claiming races, including maiden allowance and starter allowance races, with a purse of at least $15,000; and open non-maiden claiming races 42

with a claiming price of $40,000 or greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California also qualify. Stallion awards are exclusive of nomination, entry, and starting fees. Stallions must be registered by Feb. 15 each year to be eligible for stallion awards. Stallion owners will receive 25% of the remainder of the total incentive award monies after owners awards are paid, with an individual owner of a registered California stallion (as of Dec. 31) receiving a pro-rated share of the stallion fund based on the total qualifying earnings of the get during the year. Te maximum purse considered earned in any qualifying race within this state shall be $330,000 for a win, $120,000 for a second, and $90,000 for a third-place fnish. Te stallion must be continuously present in California from Feb. 1 to July 15, inclusive, of the year 2010 or any subsequent calendar year in which he stood at stud and fathered the participant in the race. If a sire dies in this state in the year 2010 or any subsequent year and stood his last season at stud in this state, or was standing at stud in this state on the date of his death in the year 2010 or any subsequent year, he shall thereafter continue to be considered an eligible Toroughbred stallion regarding a race participant fathered by him in that season. Te California Toroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) will help compile data, but it is the ultimate responsibility of the stallion owner to advise that ofcial registering agency, on or before Feb. 15 of any year, of any and all purses earned during the preceding year that shall be considered in determining the amount of the stallion award to which the owner is entitled. DOES THE PROGRAM INCLUDE RACES OUTSIDE OF CALIFORNIA?

Yes. Te breeder of a California-bred Toroughbred fnishing frst, second, or third in a graded stakes race outside of California, but within the United States, will be paid a pro-rated share of the breeders fund. Te maximum purse considered earned in any race shall be $165,000 for a win, $60,000 for second, and $45,000 for a third-place fnish. CTBA will help compile data, but it is the ultimate responsibility of the breeder to advise the ofcial registering agency (CTBA), on or before Feb. 15 of any year, of any and all purses earned during the preceding year in graded stakes races outside of this state by horses bred by the breeder. Also, the owner of a registered California stallion whose California-conceived or California-bred get fnished frst, second, or third in a graded stakes outside of California, but within the United States, will be paid a pro-rated share of the stallion fund with the maximum purse considered earned the same as the breeders above. WHEN ARE THE PREMIUMS PAID?

Owner awards are paid at the same time as the purse by the paymaster. Breeder awards are paid twice a year with a conservative advance payment of approximately 8-10% being paid around Sept. 1 and the fnal payment for 2017 being paid by March 31, 2018. Te stallion awards are paid prior to March 31, 2018.

California-Bred Incentive Awards

ARE THERE SPECIAL RACING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CALIFORNIA-BREDS?

Yes. Racetracks in California are required by law to ofer one race per day that is restricted to California-breds. Last year that amounted to 289 additional racing opportunities and more than $16 million in additional purses for California-breds. In addition, the California legislature has declared its intent that at least 10% of the total stakes purses paid at any race meeting in California be paid on stakes races restricted to registered California-breds. Tis amounted to almost $5 million in 2016 and will grow signifcantly through the creation of the Golden State Series. Also, in 2018, California Cup XXVIII will be held at Santa Anita Park in January. Part of the funding for California Cup XXVIII will come from the incentive award category, the California-bred Race Fund. Of the total incentive award monies, 9.5% will be used for this category, with the monies funding the promotion of California-bred races, the supplement of purses for California-bred races, and the creation of new California-bred stakes. WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A CALIFORNIA-BRED?

Te defnition of a California-bred is as follows: A California-bred Toroughbred is a horse dropped in California after being conceived in California, or any Toroughbred foal dropped by a mare in California if the mare remains in California to be next bred to a Toroughbred stallion standing in the state. If the mare cannot be bred for two successive seasons but remains in California during that period, her foal will be considered a California-bred. WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A CALIFORNIA-SIRED HORSE?

A “California-sired horse” is a Toroughbred that was conceived

in California by a registered California stallion. A California-sired horse is only eligible for entry in races restricted to California-bred or California-sired horses and is not eligible for any breeder or owner awards, except the maiden bonus awards. HOW DOES ONE REGISTER A CALIFORNIA-BRED OR CALIFORNIA-SIRED HORSE?

Registration applications must be fled with the CTBA. Only those horses that are both registered with Te Jockey Club and fulfll all requirements as outlined in the defnition of a California-bred are eligible. Te fees for registration are as follows: 1) $100.00 for CTBA members, $200.00 for non-members if applied for by Sept. 30 of the foal’s yearling year; 2) $125.00 for CTBA members. $250.00 for non-members if applied for after Sept. 30 of yearling but before Jan. 1 following; and 3) $750.00 if applied for after Jan. 1 of 2-year-old year. If desired, application can be made in advance of receipt of Jockey Club Certifcates to escape penalty for late fling, but no actual registration will be made until certifcates are available.
