THE NEW FRONTIER

CAL-BRED FILLY SETS NEW BARRETTS’ BENCHMARK

www.ctba.com

From the EXECUTIVE CORNER DOUG BURGE CTBA PRESIDENT

IT PAYS TO SELL A CAL-BRED

T

he current demand for quality California-bred yearlings continues to remain strong at the commercial sales both in state as well as back East. As depicted in the graph below, numerous Cal-breds are yielding prices ranging from $50,000 to nearly $400,000. In fact, the $300,000 Cal-bred sales-topping flly in August was the highest-priced yearling ever sold at Barretts. Breeders/consignors are seeing the rewards for investments made with upgrading their stock. California-breds/ sired by top national and regional sires are leading the way. Te lucrative restricted racing and

incentives continue triggering this increased marketability for well-bred and well-conformed Cal-breds. Te in-state opportunities and potential fnancial purse and incentive awards for Cal-breds give a signifcant advantage to owners. If you are racing in California, you should defnitely have some Cal-breds in your barn, both for the restricted purse benefts as well as the diverse racing opportunities. Currently, in Southern California, a Cal-bred can earn well over six fgures just going through its frst conditions (Cal-bred maiden allowance, Cal-bred frst-condition allowance, open frst-con-

dition allowance), in addition to the maiden bonus and owner awards in open company. And then there is the $5 million Golden State Series, with restricted stakes purses ranging from $100,000-$250,000 throughout the state. With such a high dependence on horses bred locally to provide the needed feld sizes, this program and opportunities need to not only remain in place, but continue to grow. We are now experiencing the positive results with a stable annual foal crop and a strong commercial and private sales market. As breeders continue to focus on quality, we should be able to build on these results.

Soi Phet defeats He Will in the E.B. Johnston Stakes at Los Alamitos

SOI PHET AGAIN WINS JOHNSTON California-bred Soi Phet captured the $75,0000 E.B. Johnston Stakes at Los Alamitos Sept. 9 for the second year in a row. Te onemile dirt race is for Cal-bred 3-year-olds and up but is not part of the Golden State Series. Kent Desormeaux piloted Soi Phet in this year’s Johnston against fve others. Recent Longacres Mile Handicap (G3) winner Gold Rush Dancer went of as the favorite, with Soi Phet the third choice. Start a Runnin took the early lead, with Soi Phet prompting the pace in second, three wide into the frst turn. Soi Phet battled gamely throughout the race, getting the lead at the half-mile pole and then again in the stretch. He held of closer He Will to win by a half-length in 1:35.71, with El Huerfano third. Soi Phet ran the distance in 1:35.71, well of his own track record of 1:33.95, set when winning the 2014 Los Alamitos Mile. “He’s something else, a real trooper,” said Desormeaux. “I just want to give him a big hug.” Trainer Leonard Powell claimed Soi Phet in May 2013 for $16,000 from his breeder, ARCHA Racing Inc. Powell trains the gelding for his wife, Mathilde, the Benowitz Family Trust, and Paul Viskovich. “Tis horse means nearly everything to me,” said Powell. “It’s going to be sad when he’s not with me anymore. He loves the long stretch here. He’s a bit of a grinder and he keeps on coming, and the stretch here helps him.’’ Soi Phet also won the inaugural Bertrando Stakes at Los Alamitos in 2014. Te son of Tizbud—Summer Jersey, by Siberian Summer, has won 13 of 55 races for earnings of $876,170.

Alan Klein and Phil Lebherz’s Miss Sunset captured her fourth stakes of the year in the $99,485 CERF Stakes at Del Mar Sept. 4. The California-bred flly earlier this year won the Sweet Life Stakes at Santa Anita, Campanile Stakes at Golden Gate Fields, and Fleet Treat Stakes at Del Mar. Mike Smith on Miss Sunset Miss Sunset prompted the early pace in the six-furlong CERF Stakes under jockey Mike Smith. She took the lead nearing the quarter pole and drew off to defeat Cal-bred Bad Ju Ju by 13⁄4 lengths in 1:09.82. Kentucky-bred Classy Tune fnished third. Jeff Bonde trains Miss Sunset for Klein and Lebherz, who bred her in the names of Premier Thoroughbreds LLC and Klein. Miss Sunset is a 3-year-old daughter of Into Mischief—Tuscan Sunset, by Trippi. Last year at Del Mar, she won the Generous Portion Stakes. With the CERF victory, she brought her record to six wins in 10 starts for earnings of $450,390.

Idiot Proof

California-bred IDIOT PROOF set a track record in winning the $300,000 Ancient Title Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Oct. 7, 2007. His six-furlong time of 1:07.57 came over the newly installed Cushion Track, but it also eclipsed the stakes record of 1:07.67, set in 2001 on dirt. With David Flores in the irons, Idiot Proof sat behind Bordonaro, who sped the frst quarter-mile in :21.69 and the half-mile in :43.87. Idiot Proof got to the lead in midstretch and defeated fellow Cal-bred Greg’s Gold by three-quarters of a length. Clifford Sise trained Idiot Proof for owner/breeders Martin and Pam Wygod. Idiot Proof, a son of Benchmark— Perfectly Pretty, by Bertrando, went on to win fve of 17 races for earnings of $1,294,484. He now stands at Victory Rose Thoroughbreds in Vacaville.

25 YEARS AGO Selling for just $3,500 as a 2-year-old, California-bred PROSPECT FOR FOUR became an amazing bargain. One of his fnest performances came in the $100,000 Pomona Derby Oct 3, 1992. Prospect for Four went into the 11⁄8-mile race sporting a perfect three-for-three record at Fairplex Park, all three races in stakes. He went off as the 7-10 favorite and won by a half-length under jockey David Flores, stopping the timer in 1:513⁄5. Selvin/Siegel Thoroughbreds bred the son of Native Prospector—Tynourfa, by Tyrant, and trainer Caesar Dominguez bought him at the 1991 Barretts April 2-year-old sale. Prospect for Four received his name because Dominguez bought him as a prospect for himself, Henry Cox, Rick Evans, and Tony Ostoich. Prospect for Four ended up earning $361,267, with eight wins in 31 starts.

KISSIN’ GEORGE was one of the fnest California-bred sprinters half a century ago. When Del Mar hosted a rare fall meeting in 1967, Kissin’ George captured the appropriately named October Handicap, held Oct. 4. Carrying top weight of 127 pounds, he defeated Vale of Tears by a neck under jockey Bill Mahorney. Buster Millerick, also trainer of the amazing Cal-bred Native Diver, conditioned Kissin’ George, and he bred the horse in partnership with Jim Sinnott. DeCourcy Graham had purchased Kissin’ George for $50,000 just before the horse won that year’s Lakes and Flowers Handicap at Hollywood Park. Kissin’ George ultimately won 26 of 62 races, with 15 seconds and three thirds, and earned $271,400.

Ismelucky, a daughter of 2011 California-bred champion 2-year-old female Ismene, scored in the $100,000 Barretts Debutante Stakes at Los Alamitos Sept. 16. A $90,000 graduate of the 2016 Barretts October mixed sale, Ismelucky defeated Shaken Memories as the 6-5 favorite. Winner of a maiden event at Santa Anita May 18, Ismelucky was making her third start in the 6 1⁄2-furlong Debutante. Kent Desormeaux rode her for trainer Jeff Bonde, who owns the 2-year-old daughter of Lucky Pulpit with Jerome Russell. After a bumpy start, Ismelucky got to the lead in midstretch and completed the distance in 1:17.84. “It was eventful trip to say the least,” said Desormeaux. “We got slammed at the start and then had to wait for room.” Bonde paid tribute to Desormeaux, saying, “Kent, the magician that he is, pulled it off.” Stephen Ferraro bred Ismelucky in California, and Harris Farms consigned her to the Barretts sale. Ferraro also bred and raced Ismene, winner of the 2011 California Breeders Champion Stakes and Anoakia Stakes.

Memoriam

Sally Lundy © BENOIT PHOTO

Bob Free

Trainer Sally Lundy, who became the frst woman to saddle a starter in the Belmont Stakes (G1), died Aug. 26 in California after a long battle with cancer. She had most recently worked for trainer Carla Gaines as her stable secretary. Lundy was 63. In 1984 Lundy trained Minstrel Star and saddled him in the Belmont. Though Minstrel Star fnished unplaced, Lundy also trained Kate’s Valentine, who won back-to-back runnings of the Ashley T. Cole Handicap at Aqueduct in 1990-91. As a trainer, Lundy won 85 races from 690 starts. Her other stakes winners included Marco Bay, Audio Cassette, and Talc’s Coventry. Early in her career Lundy galloped horses for such trainers as Willard Proctor, David Whiteley, and Burley Cocks. When she was married to trainer Richard J. Lundy, she and her husband were private trainers for Virginia Kraft Payson. Lundy also worked as an assistant to Bobby Frankel until his death in 2009. Lundy is survived by two brothers, Steve and John Caldwell.

Former trainer Robert N. (Bob) Free died Aug. 28 in Pasadena at age 77 after a long illness. During his time as a trainer, Free won throughout the West Coast. Not only did he saddle winners at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, Del Mar, Los Alamitos, Golden Gate Fields, and Bay Meadows, he also won at Portland Meadows in Oregon and at Playfair in Washington. Free was a familiar face at the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association offces. He often researched horses in the Carleton F. Burke Library. His trainees included such California-breds as Tajo, a son of Pirate’s Bounty; Muskogee, a son of Nantequos; and Socrates, a son of Native Host. A memorial was held at Santa Anita in September. Free’s survivors include a son, James; two grandchildren; three brothers; and two sisters. A nephew, Brad Free, is a longtime turf writer.

Penny Chenery, owner of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat and champion Riva Ridge and long a major ambassador of horse racing, died Sept. 16 in her Colorado home following complications from a stroke. She was 95. A daughter of Christopher and Helen Chenery, Penny Chenery managed her father’s racing stable in the 1970s, when he fell ill, with the help of her siblings, Margaret Carmichael and Hollis Chenery, and her father’s business secretary, Elizabeth Ham. Riva Ridge and Secretariat came along in back-to-back years for the stable, with the latter featured in the 2010 Disney Studios flm Secretariat. Diane Lane portrayed Chenery in the movie. Riva Ridge was cut out of the movie because, Chenery once said, “They could only accommodate so many stories in the movie.” But she had a special place in her heart for Riva Ridge, the champion 2-year-old male of 1971 and champion 3-year-old male of 1972 and winner of the 1972 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1). “Riva Ridge always welcomed you,” Chenery said. “He was laid back and very easy around the barn.” As good as Riva Ridge was, Secretariat was even better. A bright chestnut, Secretariat was so brilliant at 2 in 1972 that he was named champion 2-year-old male and Horse of the Year. The following year he became the frst Triple Crown winner since Citation in 1948 and won another Horse of the Year title, along with champion 3-year-old male and champion grass horse. As Secretariat’s popularity soared, Chenery graciously took the time to answer fan mail and sit for countless interviews. She helped establish the Secretariat Vox Populi Award in 2010, when it went to Zenyatta, and Chenery traveled to California to present the award. California-bred California Chrome won the award in 2014 and again in 2016. Chenery served as the frst female president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and president of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. She was one of the frst women admitted to The Jockey Club and helped found the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. “We are deeply proud of our mother, her accomplishments, and her courage,” said daughter Kate Tweedy. “As we mourn her loss, the example of her strength, her intelligence, and her enduring spirit continue to inspire us.” Chenery is survived by children Sarah Manning, Chris Tweedy, and John Tweedy in addition to Kate Tweedy, along with seven grandchildren.

Noor Part of Foundation Collection Had C.S. Howard not owned Seabiscuit, the owner’s legacy as one of California’s most infuential horsemen still would have been secured through Noor. Seabiscuit’s place in history might always overshadow that of Noor’s, but the importance of the English-bred runner shouldn’t be overlooked. Te power and grace of Noor were captured and are on display at the CTBA ofces though a bronze sculpture by Hughlette “Tex” Wheeler. Part of the California TorTex Wheeler’s bronze of Noor oughbred Foundation’s extensive collection of equine art and sculpted in 1951, just after the horse’s retirement, the Noor bronze measures 151⁄2” x 19” and memorializes the horse in a walking stance, with his forelegs resting on an oval, integrated, short bronze plateau. Wheeler is one of racing’s best well-known bronze equine artists, as his life-sized statue of Seabiscuit adorns Santa Anita’s walking ring and his statue of George Woolf stands in that track’s paddock gardens. Noor was the second horse in a two-horse package deal that Howard purchased from the Aga Khan. A son of Nasrullah, Noor did moderately well in Europe, including a third-place fnish in the 1948 Epsom Derby. Howard sought to buy the colt’s half brother, Nathoo, but the Aga Khan mandated that Howard buy Noor as well. Noor returned to the races in late 1949 with trainer Burley Parke. He defeated Triple Crown winner Citation in the 1950 Santa Anita Handicap. Afterward, Howard was asked how Noor compared to Seabiscuit. Te owner dropped his head and demurred, “Well, I’ve known Seabiscuit longer.” In all, Noor faced Citation fve times over their careers, with Noor victorious four times. Noor became the frst horse ever to defeat two Triple Crown winners when he won the 1950 Hollywood Gold Cup over 1946 Triple Crown winner Assault. He ended the year being named America’s champion handicap horse. Originally retired to stud in California, Noor stood in Kentucky from 1952-54 before being returned to his adopted homeland. He died in California at the age of 29 and was buried at Loma Rica Ranch in Grass Valley. More than three decades after his passing, there were plans to develop the Loma Rica Ranch property. Charlotte Farmer, a great admirer of Noor, began to lobby various planning commissions to protect Noor’s grave. After four years she fnally received permission to remove the remains. Farmer and a friend drove them to Old Friends Farm in Lexington, Ky., where Noor was reinterred in the Old Friends cemetery.

Charm a Gendarme, the 1992 California champion 3-year-old female, is one such mare, whose infuence continues to be felt in graded stakes as recently as 2016. From her grade 1-winning daughter Tout Charmant to the four recent stakes runners that list her as their third dam, Charm a Gendarme is a California broodmare standout. Longtime California breeder Robert Walter campaigned Charm a Gendarme’s dam, Fagers Charm, mostly in Northern California during the 1980s. Te stakes-winning daughter of Sham—

Charmonnier eventually stunned Best Pal by a head in the 1991 Wells Fargo Bank California Cup Classic Handicap. Charm a Gendarme did not win again, retiring at 4 with a record of fve wins, fve seconds, and two thirds from 19 starts with earnings of $224,305. Warhol, Charm a Gendarme’s son by Saint Ballado, brought $4 million as a Keeneland yearling

Ferne’s Love had one starter and winner. Charm a Gendarme’s Saint Ballado colt, Warhol, brought $4 million at the 2001 Keeneland July select yearling sale. Although he ran only four times, he did reach the winner’s enclosure in Ireland before his career ended. Charm a Gendarme’s next colt, Forest Grove, became her second stakes winner. Aaron and Marie Jones, who had purchased Charm a Gendarme for $290,000 at the 1998 Keeneland November mixed sale, bred the chestnut son of Forestry. Although they eventually sold Charm a Gendarme for $375,000 at the 2003 Keeneland November sale, they retained Forest Grove throughout his racing career and during his early years as a sire. Forest Grove broke his maiden as a sophomore in 2004, then quickly got good, adding an allowance score and two New Jersey stakes to his resume, the $100,000 Ocean Place Resort Stakes and the $60,000 Paterson Stakes. In 2005 he fnished second in the $150,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn Park before winning the $150,000 Los Angeles Times Handicap (G3) at Hollywood Park. Forest Grove entered stud at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky with fve wins in 16 starts and earnings of $281,130. From his starters, 72% have won, and his progeny have earned more than $3.5 million combined. His best runners are stakes winners Overvalued and Lay Line Force. Forest Grove is now a regional sire standing at Naylee Farm in West Virginia. An unraced full sister to Forest Grove is responsible for yet another stakes horse from the Charm a Gendarme line. Charmant Forest has thrown three winners from fve starters, including Lord of the Stars. A son of Speightstown, Lord of the Stars began his career with a win in England, ran at Meydan in Dubai as a sophomore, and fnished his career racing exclusively in Hong Kong. He was stakesplaced at 2 and 3 for earnings of $97,707. In all, Charm a Gendarme produced 11 winners from 12 starters for progeny earnings over $2.6 million. She died in 2011, but the Walters’ exemplary Calbred mare created a lasting dynasty, with her presence still felt on the racetrack even now.

Te Barretts select sale is in its third year. Trainer Brian Koriner aided in the purchase of two of the sale’s three six-fgure horses, and he commented on the robust Cal-bred prices. “Cal-breds cost a lot more than they used to,” said Koriner. “Last October we didn’t buy a thing. hen one is looking at a list of California’s champion older males, the names are instantly recognizable. Time after time one cannot help but think, “What an amazing group of horses.” Te list has real depth: Eclipse Award winners, Hall of Fame members, multiple grade 1 winners, and good sires. Tey are truly outstanding by any measurement and can hold their own against horses from anywhere in the world. Perhaps most of all, they are a monument to the dedication and care with which California-breds have evolved throughout the decades in which state-bred champions have been named. Tey are—truly and absolutely—the very best. DOING THEIR JOB WELL

If it is racing’s major job to bring fans to the track, the latest of these champions, California Chrome, certainly knew how. He won two-thirds of a Triple Crown and 22

traveled abroad to win twice in the UAE, including the Dubai World Cup (G1), gaining a legion of followers known as “Chromies” along the way. A shiny chestnut with a spring in his step, California Chrome made fans wherever he went. And if he could not quite get his nose in front in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), that task had been nicely handled by a fellow Californian named Tiznow, who remains the only horse ever to win that race twice. TOUGH GUYS

Twice champions, Chrome and Tiznow lead a list of multiple champions, including Ancient Title, Lava Man, and Best Pal (three-time older horse champions). Tis trio were, of course, geldings, but multiple champions Bertrando, California Chrome, Snow Chief, Tiznow, and Acclamation— Eclipse winners all—are entires, as was Acclamation’s broodmare sire Silveyville, another double champion. Te sheer toughness of these horses

gave them ample opportunities to make fans and leave indelible impressions on the sport. Of the 35 older male champions, nine ran more than 50 times: Ancient Title (57), Awesome Daze (62), Bruho (58), Budroyale (52), Flying Continental (51), Grey Memo (54), Nostalgia’s Star (59), Silveyville (56), and Stylish Winner (54). Another 10 ran at least 30-49 times. SIRE LINES

Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew has put a stamp on the California bred. Joey Franco (Avenue of Flags), General Challenge (General Meeting), California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit), and Slew City Slew (Lava Man) are from his tail-male line. Bold Ruler’s descendants, apart from Seattle Slew, are Prince Spellbound (Bold Hitter) and Big Macher (Bold Ruckus). Never Bend, like Bold Ruler a son of Nasrullah, is the head of Free House’s male line. Chilean-born Memo hails from the Nasrullah line via Nashua and is responsible for Grey Memo and McCann’s Mojave, while Northern Dancer accounted for Dancing in Silks (Black Minnaloushe) as well as Un-

BROODMARE SIRES

Te broodmare sire lines of this group are particularly diverse. Tey also illustrate how older champions contributed to successive generations: Older champion Nostalgia’s Star was the broodmare sire of Lava Man; older champion Snow Chief was the broodmare sire of Grey Memo; and older champion Free House was the broodmare sire of Points Ofthebench. As to the broodmare sires’ male lines, there are six Native Dancer-line broodmare sires: Gaelic Dancer (Super Diamond), Princely Native (Awesome Daze), and three Raise a Native/Mr. Prospector-line stallions. Te latter are Not For Love (California Chrome), Western Fame (Te Usual Q. T.), and Native Prospector (Joey Franco). Multiple Nasrullah-line horses are found here as well. Bold Ruler is represented through Seattle Song (Tiznow and Budroyale) and Successor (Silveyville). Ten there are two T. V. Lark presences: T. V. Relaunch-line Cee’s Tizzy and Skywalker represent Man o’ War and are responsible respectively for the full brothers Tiznow and Budroyale, along with Cost of Freedom and Bertrando. Handsome dark bay Windy Sands from the Alibhai branch of Hyperion sired the gifted Crystal Water and the tough and talented Eleven Stitches. Other Hyperion-line horses include Jumping Hill (Khaled), Megan’s Interco (Forli) and Beau’s Eagle (Owen Tudor). Raise a Native’s sire line is represented by Alydar (Points Ofthebench) and Mr. Prospector (Bruho). Prince Rose gave us Silveyville and Nostalgia’s Star. Tom Fool appears via Buckpasser (Super Diamond) and Snow Chief (Refected Glory). Ribot is responsible for Stylish Winner, by His Majesty. Turn-to’s line got Best Pal (Habitony) and Awesome Daze (Halo). Te rare Nearco line of Krakatao (Royal Owl) and Tourbillion via My Babu (Bad ’n Big) complete the picture.

dants in this column –Don B. (Megan’s Interco) and Fleet Discovery (Stylish Winner). Free House represents Never Bend, and Nantallah/Bolinas Boy appears via Barberstown. Prince Rose appears thrice via Princequillo and twice via Prince Chevalier. Te Princequillo-line broodmare sires are Nostalgia’s Star (Lava Man), King Pellinore (Best Pal), and Transworld (Flying Continental). Prince Chevalier appears via Arctic Prince (Prince Spellbound) and Arctic Prince’s son Snow Sporting (Snow Chief). Hyperion has three Alibhai kin—My Host (Eleven Stitches), Bar Le Duc (Ancient Title), and Decidedly (Jumping Hill)—as well as the Vaguely Noble son Royal and Regal (Dancing in Silks). SonIn-Law also makes three appearances, two via Herbager (Vigors in Free House’s pedigree and Big Spruce in Nostalgia’s Star) plus Beau Pere/Duplicator (Royal Owl). Tere is one older male champion each from Roberto/Kris S. (Big Macher), Man o’ War/Tentam (Bruho), Northern Dancer/Moscow Ballet (Cost of Freedom), Cyane/Smarten (General Challenge), Ribot/ Maribeau (Beau’s Eagle), Nordic Prince/ Nearctic (McCann’s Mojave), and Guerrero/Sir Gallahad III (Bad ’n Big). FAMILY LINES

As to family relationships, as previously stated, Budroyale and Tiznow are full brothers as well as full brothers to California sire Tizbud and to the dams of Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Oxbow (Tizamazing) and classic-placed Paynter (Tizso). Acclamation and Stylish Winner are from the same immediate family. California Chrome’s dam is inbred to Swaps and from the same tail-female line (Family A-4). Points Ofthebench is a full brother to Cal-bred champion juvenile Bench Points. Lava Man is a half brother to Del Mar Mile

Handicap (G2T) winner Enriched. INBREEDING

Te most common inbreeding in this group of older males is to major breedshapers Nasrullah (nine or 10 if you count Silveyville, who adds Nasrullah’s full sister Malindi). Te nine are Awesome Daze, Barberstown, Bertrando, Grey Memo, Nostalgia’s Star, Prince Spellbound, Stylish Winner, Bruho, and Megan’s Interco. Nine occasions of inbreeding to the “little giant” Northern Dancer can be found. His descendants are Big Macher, Budroyale, California Chrome, Cost of Freedom, Dancing in Silks, General Challenge, Te Usual Q. T., Tiznow, and Points Ofthebench. Nasrullah’s close relations Mahmoud and Royal Charger contributed greatly to these champions: Mahmoud via Ancient Title, Flying Continental, and Silveyville and Royal Charger via Awesome Daze and Megan’s Interco. Other lines represented by at least three horses are Alibhai (Ancient Title, Crystal Water, Eleven Stitches, and Stylish Winner); Bull Dog (Ancient Title, Barberstown, and Best Pal); and Princequillo (Best Pal, Free House, McCann’s Mojave, and Megan’s Interco) Te most infrequently found inbreeding is to Black Ray and to Serenissima (Jumping Hill), Embrujo (Snow Chief), Two Lea (Bruho), Victoria Regina (Big Macher), full siblings Your Host and My Host (Eleven Stitches), and Numbered Account (California Chrome). Inbreeding to Numbered Account is akin to inbreeding to the great broodmare La Troienne, also found in Super Diamond. Finally, three of these important horses have no inbreeding within the frst fve generations: Acclamation, Bad ’n Big, and Royal Owl.

CAL-BRED OLDER MALE CHAMPIONS 2009 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), and California Chrome was second in the Classic in 2016 and third in the 2014 Classic. Tiznow’s brother, Budroyale, ran second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (to Cat Tief). Bertrando was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (to Arazi) and the Breeders’ Cup Classic (to Arcangues). Nostalgia’s Star ran fourth behind Bertrando’s sire Skywalker in the 1986 Breeders’ Cup Classic. BIG BANKROLLS

Millionaires are common these days. It is unlikely that many horses are going to come close to the $14.7 million accrued by California Chrome, but this group won’t be visiting the poor house any time soon. Tiznow won $6.4 million. Best Pal and Lava Man earned more than $5 million. Snow Chief, Bertrando, and Free House won more than $3 million while General Challenge, Budroyale, and Nostalgia’s Star banked more than $2 million. Acclamation fell short of $2 million with $1.9; Flying Continental earned $1.8 million. Te remaining millionaires are McCann’s Mojave, Dancing in Silks, Super Diamond, Silveyville, Te Usual Q. T., Ancient Title, Megan’s Interco, and Cost of Freedom. OTHER HONORS

California Horses of the Year from this outstanding group are California Chrome (2014, 2016), Points Ofthebench (2013), Dancing in Silks (2009 with California Flag), Acclamation (2011-12), Tiznow (2000-01), Joey Franco (2003), Lava Man (2005-06), Budroyale (1999), Free House (1997-98), Best Pal (1990-92), Bertrando (1993), Snow Chief (1985-87), Silveyville (1984), Prince Spellbound (1982), Eleven Stitches (1981), Crystal Water (1976-77), and Ancient Title (1974-75). In addition to the wonderful contributions these horses have made to the memory books of racing fans, not just in California but nationwide, many have bred on. Tus, just as Flying Paster’s name in American Pharoah’s pedigree was no surprise, it is little wonder that the frst three dams of Always Dreaming, winner of the 2017 Kentucky Derby, all were foaled in California. Tiznow has Informed and Slew’s Tiznow at stud in California, along with his full

brother Tizbud. Eclipse winner Acclamation assures us that the late Unusual Heat has a strong representative, and Bertrando’s sons Stormy Jack and Tamarando give one hope that “he is still running,” as the old saying goes. Another racetrack adage tells us that “blood never sleeps.” It is not difcult to imagine, for example, that California Chrome will bump into Tiznow’s bloodlines, since both stand in Kentucky. Imagining the combined strength of those two coming home to race or breed in California is truly something to be always dreaming about. Of such history are legends made and from such bloodlines come only the very best.

Te Williamses have Bookies Luck’s year-older half sister Only You Babe as well. Tat 3-year-old Torn Song flly won last year’s Juan Gonzalez Memorial Stakes at Pleasanton and Wine Country Debutante Stakes at Santa Rosa. Steve Specht trains Only You Babe, who has earned $128,379. Of slowly in the Aug. 6 Graduation Stakes, his frst start at Del Mar, Bookies Luck fnished eighth. “Te horses have to get used to it,” Bonde said of the Del Mar surface. “It afected us early, but we’re slowly but surely digging our way out here.” Larry and Marianne Williams’ Bookies Luck carries the Lucky Pulpit mantle in the I’m Smokin Stakes Bookies Luck is one who improved tremendously in his second Del Mar start. But that Graduation efort didn’t impress bettors, who sent him of at 14-1 against a tough feld of Cal-breds. Favoritism quite naturally went to Graduation winner Continental Divide, with Graduation THE GOLDEN KIDS COME OUT TO PLAY second Smokem the second choice and BY TRACY GANTZ Graduation third Drizzy the third choice. California might have lost Lucky Pulpit earlier this year, but the deceased stallion still has a few crops coming. His son Bookies Luck surprised the feld in the I’m Smokin. Newcomer Smiling Tiger, whose frst foals are 2-year-olds, is the sire of Spiced Perfection, who captured the Generous Portion. BOOKIES LUCK’S I’M SMOKIN STAKES

Larry and Marianne Williams have been associated with Lucky Pulpit from the beginning, so it is only ftting that one of their homebred Lucky Pulpits succeeded in the I’m Smokin. Te Williamses bred Lucky Pulpit, raced him throughout his career, and then stood him at stud in California. 26

Desormeaux. “I was loaded and it was just a matter of when I wanted to go to the front.” Desormeaux made the decision leaving the turn, and Bookies Luck responded. He coasted home to a 31⁄4-length victory, stopping the timer in 1:10.62 for six furlongs. “I like to throw crosses to get them involved, but this guy doesn’t want that,” Desormeaux said. “He wants you to pull on him, take a hold and pull to get him on the bit. We cruised in. From the eighth pole home, I just watched it on the TV.” Smokem closed to fnish second, another 31⁄4 lengths in front of third-place Drizzy. Continental Divide fnished fourth of seven. SPICED PERFECTION’S GENEROUS PORTION STAKES

Santa Anita. She ran third in her racing debut, but only lost by two noses. She fnished second at Santa Anita before breaking her maiden at Del Mar by a halflength. Del Mar appeared to agree with Spiced Perfection, according to her trainer, Brian Koriner, and jockey, Joe Talamo. “Te way she’s been getting over this track in the morning is just amazing, as good as any horse here,” said Talamo. Koriner agreed, saying, “She’s been doing really well since we brought her down here. Every time Joe worked her, he gave

me a thumbs up and said she was getting better and better.” Koriner elected to skip the CTBA Stakes with the flly to keep her fresh. Tat strategy paid of in the six-furlong Generous Portion. Little Doe sped to the front from the rail, with Show It N Moe It in second and Spiced Perfection in third outside of those two. Te three raced together down the backstretch. Little Doe cracked frst, leaving Show It N Moe It and Spiced Perfection to tussle in the turn. Spiced Perfection came out of the turn on top, and then Family Girl tried to rally. But Spiced Perfection had plenty left and won by two lengths in 1:11.38. Show It N Moe It held on for third behind Family Girl. “From the half-mile pole home, I was smiling,” said Talamo. “She ran today like she’s been working—relaxed, then fnishing with a fourish.” Philip Lebherz and Alan Klein raced Smiling Tiger, and their Premier Toroughbreds team, which includes manager Dennis Yokum, bought several mares to breed to Smiling Tiger. Premier purchased the Pleasantly Perfect mare Perfect Feat for $7,500 at the 2014 Barretts January mixed sale and then bred her to Smiling Tiger to get Spiced Perfection. Te flly went through two sales. Woodbridge Farm consigned her to the 2016 Barretts October sale, where John Brocklebank bought her for $6,500. Spiced Perfection then sold for $50,000 at the 2017 Barretts March sale as part of the Checkmate Toroughbreds consignment to Michael Faber’s Dare To Dream Stable. Dare To Dream races the flly.

Brazeau Toroughbred Farms

Success in Rehabilitation, From Lay-Up to the Winners Circle! Success can be measured in many ways. At Brazeau Toroughbred Farms we set the standard very high and work diligently and without compromise to achieve our goals. One of the most successful and rewarding divisions at our farm is in rehabilitation. We have equine athletes that come to us from many trainers and race tracks, we care for horses after surgery and also after severe injury and breakdown. Our program has a very high rate of recovery and almost all of the horses go back to the track and run competitively. At BTF, the horses can be healed with many various therapeutic devices including CYTOWAVE, VIBRATING FLOOR, LASER, COLD WATER THERAPY and MAGNETS. We have developed a specialized feed program that enhances the nutritional needs of horses that are healing, it combines vitamins, minerals and nutrients to increase blood fow and replenish the bodies depleted reserves and is paired with antioxidants to support and boost the immune system. Ongoing research and cutting edge science are added to the everyday care of each equine quest to achieve the best results. A few recent winners who graduated from the BTF spa back to racing are : MY ITALIAN BABBO, a Stakes Winner at the 2017 Del Mar summer meet, LOVELY ANZI, breaking his maiden in a Maiden Special Weight by open lengths, ICE KAT, also a Maiden Special Weight winner, KNK’S DOLCE VITA, breaking her maiden in a Maiden Special and winning her a superb race at Del Mar in her frst Allowance Condition. Home Bred LUCKY PATRICK won at the Maiden Special level as well and other winners include : WILDFIRE KID, SECRETO PRIMERO, IBON, BRIARTIC GAL, TOMASINO, BUCKY GOLDSTEIN, LA BARESINA, ASK ME I MIGHT and GET LIKE ME to name a few. We are proud of the team here at BTF and of the many success stories we have had and will have in the future. New projects are always ongoing and one of the biggest developments in 2017 has been the addition of new permanent pastures totaling over 50 acres. New fencing is going up all over the farm and we are fnally utilizing all of

the land for grazing. Another project that goes along with the new pastures will be the development of a European gallop, it will have some pretty good long uphill stretches and will really help with the overall ftness of the training horses. With unlimited and excellent water the irrigation is also going and the green felds are really looking good. Broodmares and foals can now enjoy many acres of lush pasture to run and play in the sun and it’s great to see the horses with their heads down just grazing and happy. Another division at BTF that we are very, very proud of is our breaking program. All of the yearlings and two year olds we start under saddle go to the track ft and have no issues going to big venues like Santa Anita or Del Mar. We also have had great success with two year old in training sale horses, getting them ft and ready to work with top times at the previews. Our training track has inside and outside rail and banked turns exactly like a professional racetrack. Te surface is a natural sandy loam that gives the horses some bounce without concussion, the track is watered and harrowed every day and even with the terrible rain storms that hit So Cal we hardly ever miss a day of training due to track condition. BTF stallions are doing well with ofspring winning at the track and we are very excited about the two freshman sires MAKE MUSIC FOR ME and WORLD RENOWNED, both stallions have two year olds in training and MAKE MUSIC FOR ME has a flly that started in a Maiden Special Weight and ran a very competitive fourth. WORLD RENOWNED has some very nice youngsters breezing with above average workout times that indicate real talent. A few of those will be making their frst starts soon, we can hardly wait to see them run. Recent purchases include a two year old son of MEDAGLIA d’ ORO out of a Champion daughter of TIZNOW and a colt by ASTROLOGY who is a half brother to DA STOOPS, both colts will be racing by the end of 2017 and we are very excited about their futures! E.A. Ranches Providing Optimal Conditions During the Early Development of Horses is Fundamental to Racing Success

E.A. Ranches, the expansive 1,000 acre state-of the-art Toroughbred farm in the fertile hills above Ramona, was built and managed around founder Ernest Auerbach’s belief that “optimal conditions during the early development of horses are fundamental to racing success.” Following this vision of her late father, daughter Heidi Farkash and husband John are now leading E.A. Ranches into the next decades. Teir new focus is centered around ofering the very best mare and foal care, weanling and yearling boarding, expert sales prep, lay-ups and rehab, as well as dignifed equine retirement. Mare & Foal Care, Weanlings & Yearlings E.A. Ranches ofers lush, green pastures for mares and foals, weanlings and yearlings. Te spacious, rolling felds lined with dark wooden fences remind visitors immediately of Kentucky, and provide broodmares and growing foals of all ages with lots of nutritious grass and plenty of room to run and play. E.A. Ranches adopted the practice of the world’s best Toroughbred farms to integrate “chaperones” into the dedicated weanling and yearling pastures. Tese gentle, retired broodmares and geldings serve as peace keepers and teach their respective group of age-matched fllies or colts the essential horse manners. In addition, the team at E.A. Ranches prides itself that daily handling of the youngsters is a priority and continues through their entire weanling and yearling years. Sales Preparation Sales prep is a fne art that the team at E.A. Ranches has cultivated to perfection. Whether weanling, yearling, racing prospect or broodmare, the main elements of nutrition, grooming, farrier work, exercise

and show training are skillfully matched to prepare the horses for their best during the sale. Close cooperation with the most reputable consignors for each respective sales venue ensured that over the past 40 years many horses sales-prepped by E.A. Ranches have successfully graduated from all major sales nationwide. Lay-ups & Rehab Many prominent trainers and owners regularly send horses to E.A. Ranches for lay-ups and appreciate the choice of generous individual pastures, smaller grass paddocks, or runs with special footing in various sizes. Often they also rely on the highly skilled staf to care for post-surgical horses that require not only fulltime stall rest but also the meticulous administration of medications and treatments. E.A. Ranches ofers the full range of conservative techniques as well as cutting edge rehab methods, adjustments and diagnostics by an experienced vet. Retirement Racehorse retirement is a long-standing tradition at E.A. Ranches, started by its late founder, Ernest Auerbach, and continuing in the present. For owners who “want to do the right thing” by giving their old broodmare or injured racer a dignifed retirement, a couple of spacious pastures are set aside. Te retirees are checked upon twice daily during feeding time, and can live out their lives in a natural environment of stunning beauty while being well cared for. At Cal Poly he studied the soil, the water and the weather of this enchanted location. In the early 1960’s he was encouraged by noted trainers such as Farrell W. Jones and Charles Whittingham to get this property and cause it to be a world-class center for the production of top class racehorses. He and Pat moved their family onto the property in 1966 and both Farrell Jones and Charles Whittingham would be ultraproud of the results that followed the encouragement they gave the Roberts to create Flag Is Up. Te name, Flag Is Up Farms was chosen to honor the moment when all the horses are in the gate and ready for the race. Monty states, “At this time we lose all control. Our student is taking the test. Tis is the

moment for which Flag Is Up Farms is preparing our equine athletes.” Monty and Pat led the world of producing two-year-olds for the racing industry through the early days of the two-year-old in training sales. For 18 years champion after champion was produced by Flag Is Up Farms. Next year Flag is proud to stand the stallion, Niagara Falls, by Giant’s Causeway. Monty has taken his non-violent training methods to the world where he has presented over 11,000 horses to public audiences. Monty states that Tadesco is responsible for better racing surfaces for over 50 years. We pride ourselves in caring for the health of our horses with the best possible training surfaces. Pat Roberts is still competing in the saddle and recently won a major championship. Monty is still working in the round pen and at the starting gate on Flag Is Up just to prove that they are still as close to the horses as they have ever been. Daughter, Laurel is the farm manager and actively on the scene daily. Laurel is on the track every morning on a pony and watching the young Toroughbreds with a trained eye. Daughter Debbie is active in seeing to the corporate matters which are necessary in every operation. Owners of aspiring young Toroughbreds could not fnd a better place or a better team to see to the nutritional needs, the medical needs or the training needs of young Toroughbreds looking to make their mark in the racing industry. It would be hard to fnd another operation that can account for 52 years of responsibly serving the Toroughbred industry or a farm that has consistently met the task of producing sound, welltrained horses prepared for the track to maximize their potential. Te farm consists of 3-4-acre pastures with are planted each year for seasonal grass. Tis past year we have certainly been afected by the major drought in California and, as with most areas; have been asked to be very conservation conscious. We are very excited to add another wonderful stallion to farm for 2018. Heaven’s Glory ( JPN) brings a spectacular pedigree to California. He is a son of Tapit out of European Champion Tree-Year-Old Filly Peeping Fawn, by Danehill. Peeping Fawn earned $1,387,279 winning Irish Oaks (GR1), Pretty Polly (GR1). Te stallion breeding season was more than we ever could have dreamed for. Our reproductive program is handled by Dr. Celeste Spini and Dr. Jef Moss, and we thank them every day for the wonderful program they have established for our farm. 2017 started extremely busy and never slowed down, with the stallions covering almost 200 mares. Smart Bid (Smart Strike x Recording) winner of $1,008,309 had several winners in New York from his frst crop and is currently California Top Five Second Crop Sire and Circumference (IRE) (Galileo x Circle of Life) had an incredible frst group of foals, Sundarban (A.P Indy x Desert Tigress) winner of $103,340 is having a wonderful stallion career with earnings now over $600,000. Because of California incentive programs, several of the mares produced Cal bred foals by some of the best young sires in Kentucky. We had foals by Cairo Prince, Street Sense, Soldat, and have some very special yearlings by Te Factor, Fed Biz, Stay Tirsty, Algorithms, Munnings, Overanalyze, Twirling Candy and Magician (IRE) Some of the farms mare’s pedigrees were enhanced by important winners including ½ siblings -Dancing Rags -Alcibides (GR 1) A.P. With the great patience and knowledge of Gayle Van Leer, the broodmare band is growing into one of the most important groups in California. Te resident farm population is growing and we are constantly trying to improve the farm facility and this year have added an additional 10 more foaling enclosures designed to give the mares more freedom to maneuver during the time just before delivery and additional layup paddocks. Te foaling area is monitored by cameras as well as night staf. We have added 40 individual paddocks for mare care during the breeding season as it is our goal to keep visiting mares individually cared for. Te mares and foals enjoy three to fve acres large pastures during the spring. During this time, the foals are given basic training routine. After weaning, they are returned to large pastures in small groups to run, play and grow. As yearlings, they are either prepped for the fall sales or sent to Jose Murillo, at Galway Downs for their basic saddle work and to be introduced to the race track world. Te farm ofers a rehabilitation and layup program, with several options to better meet the needs of each individual horse. In addition to stall care, we ofer 24 x 24 paddocks, as well as 100 x 100 paddocks for some time of to rest or to recover from injuries, Our greatest goal is for the horses to return to useful and fulflling lives. Each year is a new beginning in the world of livestock. Each foaling season brings new hopes and dreams for the future. We are totally committed to the horse industry and plan to be here for a long time. For information please call (909) 241-6600.

“He showed us that he had an afnity with the horses,” said Jill Fischer, who owns and manages Madera Toroughbreds with her husband, Cal. “We started teaching him things and giving him more responsibility. He’s come right up the ranks to showing horses at the sales, doing all the deworming and vaccinations, and helping in the breeding season. You could say he’s our head horseman.” Valerdi originally hails from Mexico City, but he has long lived in California with his family. His job at Madera was his frst crack in the horse industry. “He literally does anything and everything that pops up in his path, which is one of the great things about him,” Fischer said. “He doesn’t limit himself with, ‘Tis isn’t part of my job.’ He does everything that needs to be done, surprises us all the time, and has a range of capabilities that is just amazing.” Valerdi’s talents were displayed last winter when the farm fooded. “Te Fresno River runs right through the middle of the ranch, and it fooded,” Fischer explained. “We’ve been trying to recover from that, and it’s been a struggle since then with all that the food caused. We expect it to continue to be an issue for us through this winter. Tere’s usually only water in it from about March until the fall, but it’s been full since November.” With the help of Valerdi, the situation has been manageable. “Luis has been amazing in building up the banks of the river, working on the pumps, and getting the irrigation systems going,” said Fischer, “on top of doing the normal things that are

He earned $487,332 and has sired 68% winners from starters to date, including Panama champion Atavismo and stakes-placed sophomores Sure Sweet and Sorceress Warning. “When we’re in breeding season, Luis helps with a little bit of everything,” Fischer said. “He doesn’t just handle the stallion, but he helps out with the teasing. He’s multi-purpose.” Madera Toroughbreds has 30 broodmares in its band, with a similar number of foals and weanlings each year, as well as yearlings. Valerdi has become instrumental in helping run the farm and manage the numbers beyond his job description. “It’s hard to quantify him,” Fischer said. “He’s such a jack of all trades. Wavy Lass retired from racing with 13 wins in 47 starts for $254,773 in earnings. She produced a Tapizar colt this year named Igota Tangled Mind. North Freeway may be Way Up’s replacement in Bachman’s broodmare band. TRICKS TO KEEPING HORSES HAPPY AND CALM BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

N

ervousness, fear, or high spirits make it difcult for some horses to relax in various situations. When a horse won’t stand still for the farrier or for a veterinary procedure, breeding exam, etc.—or becomes a danger to handlers due to fightiness or anxiety—many people reach for a tranquilizer. Yet there are many ways to help a horse remain calm without resorting to chemicals. When used properly, twitches, lip chains, Stableizers, and other devices that take advantage of certain pressure points to stimulate endorphin release in the horse can create calming efects.

Tey can also be counterproductive if used improperly, creating pain or irritation rather than relaxation. Dr. Tia Nelson, a veterinarian and farrier in Helena, Mont., says one of the most basic principles of keeping a horse calm is proper handling and training. Trust and respect are the foundation of human/horse relationships, and this is what separates the calm, relaxed attitude of a well-trained domestic horse from the fighty fear response of a wild one. TRAINING AND DESENSITIZATION

Dr. Jenny Johnson of the Oakhill Shock Wave and Veterinary Chiropractic in Calabasas, Calif., has several suggestions for keeping horses calm and relaxed. “If a horse is fighty, nervous, and won’t stand still for the

ENDORPHINS

A horse’s body has numerous pressure points, including behind the ears and beneath the top lip next to the gum. When pressure is properly applied in these areas, it tends to relax a horse and minimize pain sensations. Pressure stimulates release of endorphins, the natural narcotic-like substances produced by the body. Endorphins block pain and make the animal feel calm and relaxed—making him feel good. Tis is why a properly applied “war bridle,” Stableizer, twitch, or lip cord/chain can relax a nervous horse. Sometimes the same efect can be had

erinarian or farrier, it pays to work with the horse in advance, to prepare and desensitize him to what is going to happen, especially if it’s a young horse,” Johnson said. “Te more you can do to expose him to a variety of circumstances, the better.” Calmness and relaxation stem from trust and confdence, plus familiarity with the surroundings. Te horse is at ease, rather than suspicious or fearful. “In my chiropractic work I spend a lot more time with each horse than I did when doing routine veterinary work,” said Johnson. “I’ve found that most horses are trusting, but some are immediately defensive. Some may have had rough handling and don’t trust people, but a few are just naturally suspicious or cautious. “Tose horses take a little longer, but once they become acclimated to a specific procedure or event, they don’t panic. Understanding the personality of the individual horse is important. Some are calm about almost everything, especially if handled with basic horsemanship and you don’t do anything to make them afraid.” “Keeping a horse relaxed comes from training and consistent, calm handling, and confdence in yourself and in the horse,” said Nelson. “Te horse in a herd is continually aware of what herd members are doing. If one of them becomes alert or afraid, the others get this signal. Tey all prepare to leap away and run. Te horse considers you part of the herd. If you can breathe deeply and relax while working with a horse, you are not tense or afraid. If you are afraid, your horse will be afraid.”

Patiently working with horses in advance to prepare them for what they will experience can be most benefcial to horses and handlers

without much pressure, just by stroking certain areas. “If I run my fngers inside the horse’s upper lip and rock my fngers back and forth gently, without any pressure at all— stroking inside the corner of the lip where the gums and lip meet—this works,” said Nelson. Gently rubbing seems to calm and relax the horse. Tis is similar to having someone rub or tickle your back, if you enjoy a gentle back rub. If the horse is relaxed and enjoying this sensation, it takes his mind of worrisome or fearful things. RESTRAINT METHODS

It’s important to know when to use any restraint technique for a certain horse. Getting the horse used to various restraint methods can be part of a young horse’s early training, rather than waiting until a do-or-die situation when the horse is in a panic about a treatment procedure.

Diferent horses have diferent levels of tolerance for uncomfortable/threatening situations, and thus they might require diferent types of restraint. Proper restraint can keep the horse calm, make an otherwise difcult or impossible task feasible, and enable you to get it accomplished quickly without fghting the horse or needing a tranquilizer. Chain over nose: “Te frst level of restraint for a horse that won’t stand still could be a chain over the nose,” said Johnson. “Tis gives you an advantage if the horse wants to leave when you are doing something to him. A chain gives a little more control than just a lead rope snapped to the halter.” A chain on the end of a lead can be passed through the left ring on the noseband, over the nose, through the right ring, and then passed through the ring under the noseband. Or it can be passed up to the halter ring near the eye on the

under the noseband. Or it can be passed up to the halter ring near the eye on the right side of the horse. Either way it puts pressure on the bridge of the nose when the shank is pulled, giving the handler more control over a headstrong horse. Lip chain: “Te next step would be a lip chain,” said Johnson. If a chain over the nose is inadequate, the chain can be slipped down under the lip onto the upper gum surface. Te pressure of the chain against the gum works to restrain many unruly horses. “Used correctly, it can be very helpful in managing a horse that is a little scared (since it creates endorphin An old-fashioned twitch can be used to achieve control and cause minimal distress release),” Johnson said. THE STABLEIZER For horses that are hard to twitch or diffcult to restrain with a lip chain for medical treatment or some other task, a Stableizer usually works. This is a modern version of the old slip-twitch. The slip-twitch was a loop of small-diameter rope over the horse’s poll and under the top lip, against the gum (like a lip chain) with a loop knot in one end so it could be tightened to put more pressure on the gum and poll. The pressure over the top of the head and under the lip affects pressure points, which activate endorphins to create a sedating effect. Used roughly, however, the cord can cut into the gum or lip. The commercial version (the Stableizer) is more humane and easier to use and adjust. This restraint/calming tool was developed 20 years ago by Buck Wheeler, who grew up breaking horses on the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation in North Dakota. The Stableizer works better than a twitch because horses don’t resent it. It’s easy to put on and it stays on. One person can put it on and leave it on while working on the animal alone. The Stableizer relaxes a horse, yet unlike a twitch, the animal can still move with it on. So you can lead him, load him in a trailer, or give training lessons. The device slips over the head, behind the ears, and under the top lip next to the gum. It is then tightened, using the cord handle. It is

Tis method involves grasping a large quantity of loose skin on the neck, just in front of the shoulder, and squeezing the skin as hard as you can, with twisting action. Tis tends to immobilize a horse, perhaps because of release of endorphins that help calm him. Grasping a handful of skin at the juncture of neck and shoulder, and rolling your knuckles forward so a fold of skin is pulled over your fngers, can help keep a horse from moving forward or striking out. You can use both hands for more control. Ear twitch: “Earing down” was often used by old-time horsemen, and that can be humane or inhumane, depending on how it is done. Tere are also mechanical devices called ear twitches or ear tongs. “I generally don’t use those,” said Johnson. “On rare occasions, they can be useful. But you have to be careful to not end up with a horse that doesn’t want his ears touched.” Mechanical ear twitches are inhumane if used improperly because cartilage in the ear is very sensitive and can be permanently damaged. If done properly by hand—just cupping the hand around the base of the ear and gently squeezing with a mild twisting action—this can be efective for shortterm restraint. If done correctly, it won’t make a horse ear shy. Line up your fngers a fraction of an inch back from the edge of the ear, resting them on a ridge of cartilage at the top of the ear. Your thumb under the ear will be applying the pressure. You don’t need to twist the ear much or pull on it. Simply squeezing with your thumb, putting pressure on the ear cartilage (bending the ear’s edge inward toward your palm), tends to have a restraining efect. Keep your elbow bent when grasping the ear, so the horse won’t hurt your shoulder if he suddenly raises his head. Some horses can be efectively restrained by an ear hold, while others react strongly and may strike or sling the head. Just stroking the ears or providing some other mild massage will relax some horses, without the risk of making them ear shy.

The Stableizer is a more humane and user-friendly version of a slip-twitch

designed to put pressure behind the ears and under the lip. “This stimulate release of endorphins, which block pain and make the animal feel calm and relaxed— making him feel good,” said Wheeler. The portion of the cord that goes under the lip is covered with plastic tubing so it won’t cut into the gum or lip. The horse remembers the foot trimming, clipping, etc. as a good experience rather than something to fear and is more cooperative next time. Many horses resent reapplication of a twitch, but don’t seem to mind having the Stableizer put on again. Many horses get to where they tolerate the activity they are restrained for so much better that after a few sessions that they no longer need the Stableizer. A few years ago Wheeler moved to Kentucky to breed racehorses. He uses the Stableizer on all his foals when he starts handling them. Wheeler also handles many mares at breeding time, and he uses the Stableizer routinely for every mare that’s palpated, Using pressure points to stimulate endorphin release, bred, or undergoing Stableizers can calm a horse for necessary procedures ultrasound.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Sept. 14, 2017.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
