CALIFORNIA CUP TURNS 28

he California Toroughbred Breeders Association is pleased to announce the 28th running of the California Cup, to be held at Santa Anita Park in conjunction with the Sunshine Millions on Saturday, Jan. 27. Now in its fifth year to be merged and run early in the year instead of the fall, this event will again showcase the top California-bred and California-sired horses, with full fields, larger restricted purses, and very competitive racing. This year the stakes and overnight restricted races on the card have been adjusted in order to offer more lucrative opportunities for different classes of horses. This should encourage increased participation of the horsemen. Total purses will once again ap-

proach $1 million with a 10-race card. Te stakes races for the day include the $200,000 Unusual Heat California Cup Turf Classic Presented by City National Bank; the $150,000 California Cup Sprint; the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint; and the debuting $100,000 California Cup Turf Sprint for 3-year-olds. Te overnight restricted races under consideration are maiden allowance, non-winners of one allowance, and maiden claiming races, all with signifcantly larger purses due to the supplemental support from the Cal-bred Race Fund. Two other historic California Cup stakes, the Derby and Oaks, have been moved back a few weeks on the calendar to provide better spacing between the 2- and now 3-year-old stakes that

have been ofered since last summer. Tese stakes, both with purses of $200,000, will be run on Presidents’ Day, Feb. 19. Te annual California Cup/Sunshine Millions party for breeders, owners, and racing enthusiasts will be held for the frst time in the FrontRunner restaurant. Te Group Sales Department at Santa Anita will be accepting reservations for the party this year. Te details of the party are currently being discussed, and a letter will be mailed to all previous partygoers with instructions. Details will also be available at ctba.com. FAST AND FOXY WINS SECOND BEAR FAN Fast and Foxy added a second consecutive victory in the $75,000 Bear Fan Stakes for California-breds and California-sired runners at Golden Gate Fields. Te 2010 mare led throughout the Dec. 9 race to score by a half-length as the 3-2 favorite while ridden by Catalino Martinez. Joe Daehling’s Daehling Ranch bred Fast and Foxy, a daughter of Tisnearlywasmine—Zorra Roja, by Falstaf, in California, and Daehling owns her with trainer Holly Evans. Fast and Foxy completed the six furlongs in 1:09.43 while defeating Cuddle Alert. Run for Retts fnished third. In between her two Bear Fan wins, Fast and Foxy also won the 2017 Camilla Urso Stakes at Golden Gate. She has captured 16 of 46 races, with eight seconds and nine thirds, for earnings of $513,805.

Santa Anita Programs Designed for Full Fields Beginning with its 2017-18 winter meeting Santa Anita has implemented a program called “Ship and Stay” as well as new race conditions. Both are designed to boost feld size. Te “Ship and Stay” program has been patterned after Del Mar’s successful “Ship and Win” program, and Santa Anita and Te Stronach Group are the sole funding entities. It provides ongoing bonuses to trainers and owners who bring horses to Santa Anita from out of state, the bonuses paid to the connections who originally bring the horses, even if the horse is claimed. Horses eligible for the program must be registered for it with the Santa Anita racing ofce, have last started outside of California, and have not raced in the state over the past 12 months. Te owner and trainer will divide a 20% purse bonus for the horse’s frst start at Santa Anita. Tis percentage does not include any California-bred bonus. Te horse will earn an additional 10% purse bonus or $1,000, whichever is higher, after its second and third start. Te two new conditions are as follows: · Restricted maiden special weight races for 2- and 3-year-olds. 6

All sires will remain on the list until the year after their last foals are 2-year-olds.

Tese races will be available to homebreds and horses that have been sold at public auction for $100,000 or less. (Purses on all maiden special weight races, restricted or otherwise, will be the same.) · Restricted claiming races of $20,000 or less, for 3-year-olds and up, will be ofered to trainers who have 20 stalls or fewer. “Te goal with both of these race conditions is to try and open up our game to those owners and horsemen who are breeding, claiming, and buying at auction,” said Rick Hammerle, Santa Anita’s vice president of racing, “but often face limited opportunities to protect their investments while running in competitive spots.”

10 YEARS AGO Just eight days before he received the Eclipse Award as the champion apprentice jockey of 2007, Joe Talamo guided California-bred FINAL FLING to victory in the Santa Ysabel Stakes at Santa Anita Jan. 13, 2008. Owned by Michael House and trained by Jeff Mullins, Final Fling went off at 10-1 in the 11⁄16mile Santa Ysabel. She raced in fourth early and took the lead deep in the stretch to defeat Grace Anatomy by 11⁄4 lengths in 1:41.96. William Peeples bred the daughter of Bertrando—Lily La Belle, by Java Gold. House bought Final Fling from Peeples for $100,000 at the 2007 Barretts May 2-year-old sale. After the Santa Ysabel, Final Fling fnished third in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) to Ariege and Cal-bred Golden Doc A. She ultimately won two of nine starts for earnings of $181,204.

GRADED STAKES PLACING FOR NORTHERN SALE GRAD Camino Del Paraiso, a graduate of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association’s Northern California yearling sale, became graded stakes-placed when he fnished third in the $102,025 Berkeley Handicap (G3) at Golden Gate Fields Nov. 25. Te California-bred gelding closed ground from 11th to third behind Editore and Force. Sold for $5,000 at the 2014 sale, Camino Del Paraiso is a 2013 son of Suances—Loni’s Appeal, by Successful Appeal. Red Baron’s Barn bred Camino Del Paraiso, who is owned by Glen Road Racing and Herb Moniz and is trained by O.J. Jauregui. Te gelding has won three of 18 starts, with fve seconds and two thirds, for total earnings of $161,367.

Breeders, as well as those who act as agents for breeders, who do not already have an Interactive Registration account should sign up for one at the following address: registry.jockeyclub.com. “We encourage those who manage certifcates of foal registration to sign up for an Interactive Registration account between now and early 2018 if they have not already done so,” said Matt Iuliano, executive vice president and executive director of Te Jockey Club. “Te use of digital foal certifcates will allow foal papers to be easily transferred between entities at the click of a button, and we are looking forward to implementing this much-needed change.” More information about digital foal certifcates will be made available in early 2018 before they are ofcially launched in the spring.

California-bred EL ATROZ relished a muddy track to score a 10-1 upset in the El Camino Real Derby (G3) at Bay Meadows Jan. 23, 1993. In against odds-on favorite Lykatill Hil, trained by Art Sherman, El Atroz and jockey Rafael Meza came from well back to post a length victory over Cal-bred Offshore Pirate in 1:43.77 for 11⁄16 miles. Lykatill Hil fnished third. Jose Silva trained El Atroz for the Cuadra TYT stable of brothers Alfonso and Jose Antonio Lanzagorta. Cuadra

El Atroz TYT bred the gelded son of Timeless Native—Black Star, by Weimar. El Atroz was completing a double of the El Camino Real Derby and California Breeders’ Champion Stakes, following in the footsteps of fellow Cal-bred Snow Chief. “I’ve been telling everyone this is a very good horse and they had him to beat,” said Silva after the race. El Atroz throughout his racing career earned $320,875.

50 YEARS AGO Mr. and Mrs. Hastings Harcourt’s Flag Is Up Farms won the Los Feliz Stakes with California-bred SHARIVARI at Santa Anita 50 years ago. The Jan. 11, 1968, race was only the third start of Sharivari’s career. Ridden by Alvaro Pineda and trained by Farrell Jones, Sharivari captured the 61⁄2-furlong Los Feliz by a neck over Dignitas, a son of Round Table owned by William Haggin Perry. Dr. B.K. Sharivari also won the 1968 San Jacinto Stakes and fnished third in the 1969 Coronado Stakes. He later raced in New Zealand, where he became one of the few horses ever to win both the prestigious Telegraph Handicap and Railway Handicap.

Terry Lovingier has purchased a majority interest in Stay Thirsty, who will stand at Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch in Warner Springs for 2018. Mike Repole has retained a 10% interest in the stallion, and Stay Thirsty will stand for $5,000. Formerly standing at Ashford Stud, from which Lovingier bought the interest, Stay Thirsty is already the sire of fve black-type winners, including multiple graded winner Coal Front and Peruvian multiple grade 1 winner Golden Leaf. His other black-type winners are Cosmo Charlie, Princess Karen, and Jocker Justice. While racing for Repole Stable, Stay Thirsty won fve of 17 races, with fve seconds and one third, for earnings of $1,936,000. Todd Pletcher trained him to victories in the 2011 Travers Stakes (G1), Jim Dandy Stakes (G2), Gotham Stakes (G3), and 2012 Cigar Mile Handicap (G1). Joseph A. Duffel Joseph A. Duffel, a longtime owner and breeder of California-breds, owner of Wheatland Farm, and a builder and real estate developer in the Bay Area, died of cancer Dec. 1 at his home. He was 93. “Joe was an interesting person and did love horse racing,” said fellow owner/breeder John Harris. “I was on the Tanforan board with him years ago. He had a great sense of humor.” Duffel’s Wheatland Farm, in Wheatland, stood such horses as Northern Devil, a son of Forty Niner—Devil’s Orchid, by Devil’s Bag. Duffel was actively involved in the Thoroughbred industry for more than 35 years. His homebreds include Calbred Nevada Worrier, a multiple stakes winner and earner of $181,243. Born in Lakeview, Texas, Duffel and his fve siblings all graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. Duffel began his college education with a full scholarship to Baylor University. World War II interrupted his college education, and he served in active duty in the Pacifc. After the war he completed his education at Berkeley. In 1954 Duffel founded the Duffel Financial and Construction Company and worked as its CEO up until the fnal days of his illness. He ran for the state senate in 1966 and worked for Ronald Reagan’s 1968 presidential campaign. Duffel served as a delegate to four Republican conventions and for 12 years on the California Transportation Commision, one of many boards on which he served.

Canadian classic winner and champion Shaman Ghost retires to stud in California

Frank Stronach, whose Te Stronach Group runs Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields, has announced that Shaman Ghost will stand in California in 2018. In addition, Stronach’s son, Andy, has headed a deal to bring North Light and City Wolf to the Golden State. Te Stronach family has committed to help strengthen California-bred breeding opportunities with the infusion of stallions from their programs. In October, Frank Stronach announced that he was putting his Kentucky Adena Springs Farm up for sale, reducing his breeding stock in Kentucky, and sending some to both California and Maryland. Stronach announced that he would stand Shaman Ghost, a son of his homebred 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper, for $10,000. “He will be very exciting for the California breeders,” Stronach told BloodHorse Daily. “I don’t know where he will stand yet.” Adena Springs bred Shaman Ghost in Ontario, Canada, from the stakes-placed Gilded Time mare Getback Time. A winner of eight races in 17 starts, Shaman Ghost proved victorious in such races as the 2016 Santa Anita Handicap (G1) and Woodward Stakes (G1). He captured the 2015 Queen’s Plate Stakes and was named Canada’s champion 3-year-old male. Shaman Ghost has earned $3,859,311. “We have Ghostzapper in Kentucky, and I really want to do something out in California,” Stronach told BloodHorse Daily. “Tis is a horse that won the Santa Anita Handicap; he won a graded stakes in New York; he’s a Canadian champion; and he fnished second in the Pegasus World Cup (G1), so really he could stand anywhere.” Shaman Ghost will be standing his frst season at stud in 2018 while North Light and City Wolf are relocating to California. City Wolf, a 2007 son of Giant’s Causeway—Baby Zip, by Relaunch, is a half brother to top sires Ghostzapper and City Zip. North Light previously stood in Kentucky and Ontario. His black-type winners include such California graded stakes winners as Chips All In and Celtic New Year. City Wolf won from seven furlongs to 11⁄8 miles, and he captured the 2011 Durham Cup Stakes (G3) en route to earnings of $293,686. North Light will stand for $5,000, and City Wolf will stand for $2,500.

Assisting Fire Victims As have countless individuals and other organizations within and outside of the racing and breeding industries, the California Toroughbred Foundation has stepped forward with funds to help victims of the tragic San Luis Rey fre. Te Foundation made a donation to CARMA, which is coordinating donations to be given directly to help the Toroughbred horses afected by the California wildfres. Te CTF salutes the many people who immediately worked into the night and for days afterward to rescue the horses at San Luis Rey Downs. Not only did grooms remain to save horses, at great risk to themselves, many veterinarians and their stafs rushed to Del Mar and surrounding farms to care for the injured animals. Te Southern California Equine Foundation set up a dispensary at Del Mar for distributing veterinary supplies as needed. In an open letter Dr. Joe Dowd, president of SCEF, noted the incredible work that so many veterinarians were doing, and the Foundation joins him in thanking those who saved these horses.

When they ran out of those, they made makeshift halters with belts, shirts, baling wire, and even cotton leg wraps. “It went from a 10-acre fre to within a matter of couple of hours into thousands of acres,” said Huggons. Scathing is frst San Luis Rey fre victim back to business, taking a Dec. 14 starter allowance race at Los Alamitos

Del Mar, which has frequently taken in horses of all breeds after fres in the area, immediately opened for the San Luis Rey horses, as well as others needing to evacuate. People from Santa Anita rushed to Del Mar to help. Management personnel from both tracks mustered whatever supplies were necessary to get the barns open for horses and to set up housing for grooms and other workers displaced by the fre. Linda Madsen, owner of Milky Way Farm in Temecula, heard about the fre and began mobilizing. While the road closures kept Madsen from getting to San Luis Rey, she was able to rescue several pleasure horses from a nearby farm. “I called some friends and told them I could come right away if they needed help,” Madsen said. “We were already hitched up and we just took of.” Several people called Madsen for help. Armed with the phone numbers and directions to those who needed evacuation, Madsen began driving toward the fre. Despite the road closures Madsen talked her way to them. “I know these people are in the street waiting for us,” she told authorities. Madsen loaded up the pleasure horses and tried to get to San Luis Rey, only to be turned away because of the road closures. She took the horses she had to Milky Way, with some of the horses’ owners following in their cars. “Linda Madsen of Milky Way Farms in Temecula not only drove us out but settled us into her beautiful barn and cared for our horses for four long days while the winds persisted,” said Liz Pink in a letter to 30

the CTBA following the fre. “She made trips to the feed store for needed supplies and welcomed us for as long as we needed to stay. After returning us to our ranch, she refused any type of compensation.” Authorities eventually reopened the roads, allowing a long line of vans that had been waiting into San Luis Rey. Most of the horses were evacuated to Del Mar, and the racing industry on a national scale began donating funds to the victims, both human and equine. Many grooms who worked tirelessly to free the horses lost everything they owned, and several trainers sustained tragic losses of horses as well as equipment such as tack. Trainer Martine Belloq was hospitalized with severe burns and was initially in an induced coma in critical condition. Santa Anita and Del Mar spearheaded the creation of a Go Fund Me account (www.gofundme.com/thoroughbredcare), and the fund quickly reached more than $600,000. Te California Toroughbred Horsemen’s Foundation, which runs the Noble Treewitt Health Center on the Santa Anita backstretch, reconfgured its website (www.cthfcares.org) to accept donations that could be earmarked for fre victims. Several organizations, including the California Toroughbred Breeders Association, made donations. Barretts announced that 10% of the sales commissions from its upcoming January mixed sale would go for fre relief. While many of the horses evacuated from San Luis Rey had injuries that would compromise or delay their racing careers, California-bred Scathing provided one of the most hopeful incidents. Scathing became the frst horse based at San Luis Rey to win a race following the fre. Te 2013 daughter of Grazen— Chelcee’s Hope, by Bartok, won a $15,000 starter allowance race by 11⁄2 lengths at Los Alamitos Dec. 14. Madsen noted how so many people joined to help on several levels. “Te industry just came together,” said Madsen. “It was a beautiful feeling when you saw what all these people were doing to try to get in there and help. It really gives you a diferent perspective on life.”

California Diamond a Fire Victim California Diamond, the champion California-bred 2-year-old male of 2016, died as a result of the Lilac fre. “With heavy hearts, we are sad to report we lost fve to the fre, one being our special jewel California Diamond,” said trainer Peter Miller on his Twitter account. Miller trained California Diamond for Gary Hartunian’s Rockingham Ranch, which had purchased the colt for $125,000 at the 2016 Barretts paddock sale at Del Mar. Stormy Hull bred the son of Harbor the Gold—Carrie’s a Jewel, by Slewdledo. California Diamond started once for Dickman Legacy Ranch and once for Twin V Farm before Rockingham purchased him. He won fve of 14 starts, with fve seconds, for earnings of $475,970. California Diamond collected stakes victories in the 2016 Santa Anita Juvenile Stakes, Barretts Juvenile Stakes, Speakeasy Stakes, Golden State Juvenile Stakes, as well as stakes placings in such races as the 2016 Bob Hope Stakes (G3). In his most recent start he had fnished fourth in the Nov. 19 Cary Grant Stakes.

Madeline and Harris Auerbach saw that the cross of the Bartok mare Veela with Unusual Heat worked, and they began a lengthy search to fnd Veela. “I remembered Veela on the track,” said Harris Auerbach. “We went to a Barretts sale in 2010, and there was this little yearling flly who Madeline and I fell madly in love with. We ended up buying her for $15,000 and named her Our Heat.” Charlotte Wrather had bred and raced Veela, and she bred Our Heat, the daughter of Unusual Heat out of Veela. Te Auerbachs put a partnership together and began racing the flly.

Te strategy worked perfectly. How Unusual came into the stretch four wide to take the lead late and defeat favored Responsibleforlove by a half-length in 2:14.92. Veela has since produced three more foals by Unusual Heat, including a weanling colt that Harris calls “one of the 10 best Unusual Heat colts ever born.” Te mare is in foal to Gervinho and in 2018 is scheduled to be bred to Hard Spun in Kentucky.

But what happens when this scenario doesn’t play out? What if the foal can’t suckle, the mare isn’t producing milk, or she fat out rejects her newborn? What can be done to support the health of both mare and foal? “Tere are many reasons a mare may not be able to nurse a foal,” said Dr. Jeanne Bowers-Lepore, resident veterinarian at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga. “Some involve physical issues, such as scarred or deformed udders that are incapable of producing milk, failure

Fortunately, we have many ways to address these problems.” An endophyte is a type of fungus or bacteria that can infect fescue hay supply. “Mares that fail to develop a bag (agalactia) can be started on hormones such as domperidone to override the suppressive efects of the endophytes,” Bowers-Lepore said. Domperidone was used for many years to support breastfeeding women, but is no longer advised for humans by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In horses it is still considered safe and efective. Sue Greene, who owns and operates Woodbridge Farm in Oakdale, once dealt with a mare that had produced prior foals, but she “appeared to have no milk at all.” “We started the mare on domperidone as well as trying to add some fat to her diet by increasing rice bran or wheat bran,” Greene added. “We decided to keep the foal with the mare and supplement the foal at the beginning, treating it as an or-

phan and feeding it every two hours.” Bowers-Lepore said, “Te mare with udder abnormalities may still be able to keep her foal with supplemental milk provided. Foals quickly adapt to drinking out of buckets.”

But Greene cautioned that keeping an eye on the foal’s weight is critical, to make sure the youngster is getting enough. “You really have to monitor the foal’s weight, whether through a scale or a tape, which won’t be as accurate,” said Greene. “Supplement the diet with milk. Purina has a product called Mare’s Match, and it also makes a pellet. Once the foal is nine

days old, you can soak the pellets in the milk and they do really well on that.” Dr. Ed Hamer is an expert in reproduction and fertility and works out of the Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center in Los Olivos. “Tere’s obviously a laundry list of reasons why a mare couldn’t produce enough milk,” said Hamer. “First-time foaling mares, or maiden mares, occasionally have low milk production. Mares that have a premature delivery a lot of times aren’t lactating the way they should because they foaled early. If there has been an illness, such as if a mare is sick or has an underlying disease process, then a lot of times they don’t lactate like they should.” Be sure to know exactly how many days in foal the mare is, he added. “Tat’s important—good record-keeping—so that you know exactly when your mare is actually due. In the Toroughbred industry that typically isn’t a problem because you know your gestational date down to the day. We want the mare to carry at least 335 days, with the average being 345. If we can get close to that, we are happy.”

To help fght against sickness and premature birth, Hamer recommends “monitoring their temperatures, which I know is not real practical on a lot of big farms. But late in gestation we can catch early placentitis or low-grade infections that have nothing to do with the uterus or placenta.” Placentitis is infammation of the placenta, which can lead to a compromised fetus. “Looking for vaginal discharge helps monitor for placentitis,” said Hamer, “which can be a problem that leads to late abortion, in extreme cases, or premature birth. Ten you would have the problem with the milk production: one, they had an early foal and two, they are sick.” Hamer warns against one more issue that can cause poor milk production. “An extreme example would be dietary,” he said. “A mare that maybe isn’t on a positive nutritional plane may not produce because the nutrition isn’t what it should be. Good nutrition, especially late in gestation but throughout the pregnan-

cy, is important.” Another hormone that can be given in addition to domperidone is oxytocin. “Post foaling, if you have a mare that for no apparent reason has decreased milk production—especially in maiden mares—where they already have good nutrition, try to get them on supplements so they start producing milk,” Hamer said. “We use domperidone, a typical go-to for milk production, but oxytocin post foaling can also help. It causes uterine contractions, so we use it for retained placentas. But it helps with milk production as well.” Sometimes the mare lactates normally, but the foal is the one unable to nurse. Several reasons can cause this to occur. “Gestational length is a big factor there,” Hamer said. “Te maturation of the fetus is important. Is it a term foal or premature? Sometimes a mare will carry to 380 or 390 days, and those foals also cause a problem because there was an issue in their development.” Complications can also arise during

birth. “What kind of delivery was it? How long did it take? Was the foal hypoxic, does it have a chance of being septic?” Hamer said. “Keep records of all the details you know about the birth.” Hypoxia occurs when an area of the body is deprived of oxygen. “Tis can lead to dummy foals,” said Hamer. “Some appear obviously dummy right at the beginning, but some develop in 24-36 hours afterward with swelling in their brain. Tat is a big reason why foals don’t nurse.” Te foal’s gender can play a role, as well. “Colts tend to be slower than fllies to nurse as a general rule,” said Hamer. “Colts tend to have a higher body weight, so it may be something involved with that. Maybe the birthing process was slower. And sometimes you do run across a foal that for all intents and purposes looks normal, but they don’t have a suckle refex. Tat could be neonatal maladjustment syndrome.” Tat disease afects the cardiovascular and nervous systems of the foal. While the foals appear normal at birth, they develop symptoms within a few hours. “Te foal may be overtly neurological at birth, with wandering syndrome or head pressing,” said Hamer, “which are all a result of damage or ongoing problems in the nervous system resulting from the hypoxic event of birth. But sign number one is that those foals don’t nurse, either.” Breeders might also face the heartbreaking difculty of a mare rejecting her foal. “You may have a foal that wants to nurse, and everything has been fne with the gestation and birth, but you have a mare that is just not having any of it,” said Hamer. “Tat’s more common in maiden mares, and most of Maiden mares are more likely not to want their foals to nurse and might reject their foals altogether the time those can sort them-

level to see if the behavior is a true rejection or just discomfort around the udder. Manually milking the mare and providing mild tranquilizers and pain control can cure many of those. Tis is not uncommon in maiden mares.” Even in more severe cases, there is hope.

“If the rejection is such that the mare tries to attack the foal,” Bowers-Lepore said, “giving the mare prostaglandin and removing the foal from sight until she calls for it has worked in many cases.” Keeping the foal with the mare is always the best-case scenario, though that is not always possible.

“Hopefully, you don’t have a true orphan case where you’ve lost the mare because there are so many things that mares teach their foals through body language,” said Greene. “It’s so important they stay with an adult horse that can teach them things such as how to graze—things we ourselves can’t show them as humans.” Unless a problem has shown itself, it’s important to let the maternal bond happen naturally. Longtime California horseman Tom Hudson said, “A majority of the time rejection is human-caused. When you’re foaling a maiden mare or one that has rejected before, you have to try to prevent it from happening. We’ve had people stand in the stall for two weeks around the clock with mares that have rejected in the past to help the foal.” While there are no guarantees that a mare will lactate and bond naturally, with good nutrition, careful record keeping, and the help of knowledgeable veterinarians, problems can be prevented or corrected for the health of both the mare and foal.

Fortunately, we can now take older mares that have raised a few of their own foals and not only induce lactation with a combination of hormones (prostaglandin, Estradiol, progesterone, and oxytocin), but we can hormonally induce the maternal bond.” While breeders should be optimistic that the mares will settle and the foals will be able to nurse, Bowers-Lepore urges caution. “Rejection is the hardest, as the danger to the foal can be deadly,” she said. “It is important to address the mare’s comfort

Encountering major trouble in his third start, the six-furlong Golden Nugget Stakes at Golden Gate, Intimidate fnished sixth and last. Squeezed hard on the backside, Intimidate had to be checked and never had a chance. He was ofcially moved up to ffth upon the disqualifcation of second-place fnisher La Waun. “He was lucky he didn’t go down last time,” said Hess. Intimidate’s frst three starts came on Golden Gate’s Tapeta surface. So when Hess decided to try the King Glorious, he was taking a shot at both dirt and the one-mile distance. He initially put away that rival, but lost the lead into the stretch before coming back on to win by 11⁄4 lengths in 1:38.76. Campaigner fnished third while 6-5 favorite Bookies Luck had to go wide on both turns and fnished sixth. “He ran a great race,” said Smith. “He got to pull himself up a little and was leaning in the stretch, but I was able to straighten him out and he held them of.” Te victory gave Intimidate a record of three wins in four starts for earnings of $99,640. “We know now he can handle two turns and dirt,” said Hess. “I think he might do better as time goes on.”

Ruis liked the flly’s family so much that he not only bought her privately but purchased the mare and two brothers. An older full brother, Awesome Return, is a multiple stakes winner and graded stakes-placed runner on the turf. He has earned $426,673. aking a chance on a frst-time starter in a claiming race can sometime pay huge dividends. Tat’s what trainer John Sadler and owners Kosta and Pete Hronis found out when they took California-bred Edwards Going Left out of his frst start for $50,000. Since that initial investment, Edwards Going Left has earned more than $200,000 and most recently captured the $101,380 Cary Grant Stakes Nov. 19 at Del Mar. “He’s probably the claimer of the year, wouldn’t you say?” Sadler said after the Grant. “He’s won six races on the Southern California circuit, which is hard to do.” Te Cohen family’s Red Baron’s Barn and Vaya Con Suerte bred Edwards Go-

ing Left, a 2014 son of Midnight Lute— Dypsy, by Broken Vow. Red Baron’s Barn purchased the mare for $60,000 from the Mill Ridge Sales consignment at the 2013 Keeneland November mixed sale. Dypsy was carrying Edwards Going Left at the time of the sale. Dypsy had spent the latter part of her racing career in Southern California. She fnished third in the 2012 Manhattan Beach Stakes at Hollywood Park. Te mare’s dam, Fiery Pulpit, is a half sister to grade 3 winner Clamorosa and to stakes winner Bensonhurst Bull, as well as to four stakes-placed runners. Hronis Racing claimed Edwards Going Left last February, and the gelding won his frst three races for his new connections. Sadler frst tried him in stakes company in the July 28 Real Good Deal Stakes for Cal-breds and California-sired runners, and Edwards Going Left fnished third to Mr. Hinx and Ann Arbor Eddie,

Heading into the Grant, Edwards Going Left had won twice more, his only ofthe-board efort a sixth in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G1) against Roy H, who went on to win the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). Te seven-furlong Grant came up especially tough, with the likes of Solid Wager, the previous two years’ Grant winner, and Cal-bred champions Smokey Image, California Diamond, and Gold Rush Dancer among the runners. Edwards Going Left’s consistency appealed to bettors, who sent him of as the 2-1 favorite. With Tyler Baze in the irons, Edwards Going Left moved up fve wide on the turn, took the lead in midstretch, and held of the closing Solid Wager by a half-length in 1:22.98. Smokey Image fnished third. “I just wanted to keep him in the clear today, not let him get in trouble,” said Baze. “I could feel that horse coming.” Edwards Going Left raised his lifetime record to six wins in nine starts, with one third, for total earnings of $231,390. Sadler said that he will likely try more graded races with the talented Cal-bred.

A Cinch for Success

MARY ELLET

If Mary Ellet were to write her own screenplay, it might be titled “How to Steal Your Brother’s Horse and Get Away With It.” But the unmistakable bond between Ellet and her pony horse Cinch is so ferce that her brother willingly moved on while horse and rider are now working together in Kentucky. Ellet had a unique childhood, growing up on the Southern California racetracks. Both of her parents have been outriders and pony riders, leading racehorses through the post parade and to the starting gate. After riding in Western events such as barrel racing and gymkhana classes as a child, Ellet started work at the racetrack in earnest at 16. “I really started working at the track the summer before my senior year because I was going to take AP (Advanced Placement) French,” Ellet said. “My mom warned me against going all summer without speaking French and said I should start talking with the French riders.” Ten Ellet met Marco Ramirez, who galloped for Jerry Hollendorfer. “I learned Spanish from him, as well,” said Ellet. “And one day he said he had a horse that needed to go with a pony. Te frst horse I ever ponied ended up being Blind Luck.” Blind Luck earned more than $3.2 million with six grade 1 wins, and she was voted an Eclipse Award as the 2010 champion 3-year-old flly. “She really is who I credit with making me love the sport,” Ellet said. “She sparked my interest and turned it into a passion.” Ellet ponied for Hollendorfer for two years on weekends and breaks from school, then started ponying for Bob Bafert while in college at Chapman University in Orange. After graduation in 2015, she was selected for the Godolphin Flying Start program, a two-year international graduate program that takes trainees around the world to learn the horse business in Australia, Europe, and Dubai. But throughout her journey Ellet’s heart was still at home in California with a Paint horse named Cinch. “We bought Cinch from Anthony Saavedra as a 5-year-old in

Cinch was too pretty to be a boy’s horse, so Mary Ellet “appropriated” him from her brother

2007,” Ellet said. “At the time we had a horse named Mo who was a superstar, one of those perfect horses to have while growing up, and he died a week later. My dad said that our new horse, who was a rock-steady, gorgeous horse, was a ‘cinch’ to fll Mo’s spot. Tat’s how he got his name.” Ellet’s brother James started using Cinch as a team roping horse. “He did high school and college rodeo with my brother,” Ellet said. “When he came home for Christmas break, I said, ‘Mom, he’s just too pretty to be a boy’s horse.’ And that’s the story of how I stole Cinch from my brother.” While Ellet was overseas, her mother, Cindy, rode Cinch during the 2016 Breeders’ Cup races at Santa Anita, where Cinch took defending champion Tepin to the post for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1T). When Ellet recently got a job working for PM Advertising in Kentucky, she took Cinch with her. Te pair ponies at Keeneland in the mornings, and while Cinch had to stay in the Bluegrass State for the 2017 Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, Ellet returned and ponied horses such as defending Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1T) champion Highland Reel and group 1 winner Nezwaah to the gate. “He’s undoubtedly my horse,” Ellet said of Cinch. “California will always be my home, but if I were ever to up and move anywhere around the world, I would take Cinch with me.”

Dr. Stacy Potter

In a relatively short time Dr. Stacy Potter has been all over California, experiencing many facets of the industry. During the last four years she has shared her veterinary skills with Rancho San Miguel and has proved so indispensable that farm manager Clay Murdock selected her as one of the farm’s most valuable employees. “It is such an advantage to have a resident veterinarian on the property,” said Murdock. “She not only takes care of the veterinary work, but also takes part in the management of the farm. She is very involved with all aspects of what we do here.” Te Toroughbred industry wasn’t necessarily part of Potter’s plans just a few short years ago. Te Orange County native got her undergraduate degree at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and Quarter Horses were her passion. “I showed extensively throughout the Western United States,” she said, “and actively as a young kid up through college. Also, my trainer had a large Quarter Horse breeding ranch, and I helped them at the farm during school breaks and summers.” But her proximity to Toroughbreds couldn’t be ignored. “As an undergrad, I was deciding between going the animal science route and working at a breeding farm, or if I should go to vet school frst and get into breeding that way. I started working closely with Sommer Smith and Dave Showalter from NexStar Ranch, helping them at the Barretts Sales. Being at Cal Poly, it was easy to run over and help them groom and show horses.” Te University of California, Davis beckoned. “I completed vet school there,” said Potter, “and when I graduated, I went straight to Rancho San Miguel.” She lives close to the foaling barn, has a truck stocked with the necessary supplies, and has a separate clinic nearby where horses can be taken in the event a sterile environment is needed. During

breeding season, she spends the day checking on foals, palpating mares, and tending any minor injuries. “In the springtime we do survey radiographs as well,” she explained. “We’ll do cultures on the mares and take preventative measures to keep anyone from getting sick.” In the of-season Potter enjoys handling horses in general. “She is very hands-on to any neonatal issues as she cares so much for the young foals and is willing to do whatever is necessary for their treatment,” Murdock said. “I would say maybe her biggest asset is she really cares about the horse and its veterinary care. She is also very good with communicating with owners, and she has a lot of empathy for them when difcult things arise. We have a very high conception rate here because of her attention to detail.” After several years of Potter has returned to the show arena. “I just got back from the American Quarter Horse Association World Championships with a flly,” she said. “It has been 10 years since I’d shown in what is our world championships, so it meant a lot to me. I still have a lot of passion for the show horses.” And she treats the Rancho San Miguel horses as her own. “I always say that one is my favorite baby or mare, but then I realize I have 10 of those each year,” she joked. “But I do treat them all as if they were my own horses.”

adeline and Harris Auerbach know that racing can be a cyclical game. You can be lucky enough to get a sprinkling of stakes wins, followed by a lengthy drought. You could also have a hand in two graded stakes wins just 10 days apart. For the Auerbachs, all these things have happened, with the latter extreme coming via California-breds from Nov. 23 through Dec. 3. Te Auerbach-bred and -sold How Unusual won the Red Carpet Handicap (G3T) on Tanksgiving, and then homebred Majestic Heat took the Bayakoa Stakes (G2). Tese victories came at the tail end of a tough year for the well-known

California breeders, who lost their foundation stallion, Unusual Heat, in May. But for Madeline, patience has always been the most important part of the game. “When you’ve been doing it as long as we have,” she said, “it’s very validating because you know you’re doing things right. Tis business is an infnite test of patience and resources, but mostly patience. I believe that’s very difcult to remember sometimes.” Madeline was particularly fond of How Unusual when the daughter of Unusual Heat— Veela, by Bartok, was young. “I got to know our young horses very well,” she said. “When How Unusual came to the track (they) said she was very difcult and to watch myself. She came right over and laid her head in my arms. I don’t doubt that she was a spitfre, but she always had a wonderful connection with me.” “How Unusual has always been one of Madeline’s favorites since she was a baby,” confrmed Harris. “She has exceeded all expectations and is a beautiful flly.” Mother and son, along with partners, raced How Unusual through the frst eight months of her career, which included a maiden win at Santa Anita and a second-place efort in the 2016 Campanile Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. Trainer Mike Pender approached the Auerbachs about buying the flly after he failed to acquire anything in the 2016 Barretts August select yearling sale. “We sold her privately to him and told him he was getting a really good deal,” Harris said, “which it turns out he really did.” How Unusual won her frst start for her new connections, then fnished in the top three spots in fve of six starts in 2017. For those horses that headshake because of sunlight, face masks that act like sunglasses might be a solution

eadshaking syndrome in horses is a symptom, not a disease. Like fever, it is a sign of disease rather than a disease itself. Headshaking has a number of causes, and several veterinarians have studied these causes to fnd ways to treat them. Te headshaking generally comes on suddenly—in a horse that has never done this before—and usually continues to occur sporadically. Pamela Wilkins, DVM, PhD, Diplomate ACVIM, ACVECC, a professor of

equine internal medicine at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, says it can be challenging to fgure out the cause. “We can use multiple diagnostic methods and still be unable to determine the cause of headshaking,” Wilkins said. “Tis doesn’t mean that we can’t try therapies that may be efective.” Horses with headshaking syndrome exhibit a repetitive, involuntary movement that is generally more vertical (up and down) than side-to-side. “It’s like a very quick downward fick of the nose and generally looks like something is bothering the horse—an annoyance of some kind,” said Wilkins. One reason Wilkins became interested in this problem was that, as a young person, she had seen headshaking horses

while riding. “At that time, everyone thought this was a behavioral problem, so the horses were punished,” she said. “Riders would use running martingales, elevator bits, and tack nosebands to keep the horses’ heads in position and keep them from headshaking.” After she became a veterinarian, Wilkins realized that these horses are physically disturbed. Tey were trying to rub or scratch the face, rub their eyes, or blow their nose. “Tere is some kind of irritation in the face or nose area,” she said. “So I try to educate people that these horses are not being bad. I think horse owners today have become more aware of this problem, and more of them understand that it is a physical problem and not a behav-

Tese horses can be dangerous, but they are not intentionally trying to be bad.” When it becomes really serious, the movement may involve the whole head and neck. “Another sign of headshaking may include rubbing the head and muzzle,” said Wilkins. “Tis can be constant and vigorous. Tis is not a little gentle rub; it’s like a horrible itch that has to be scratched and nothing is making it better. Some of these horses develop sores from vigorous rubbing. “We don’t know what these horses are feeling because they can’t tell us. Tere are some similar things in humans, however, such as people who have trigeminal neuritis, which is over-activity of the trigeminal nerve. Tese people describe a feeling of tingling or even painful sensation along their nostrils and the side of the face. “Headshaking is probably primarily related to the trigeminal nerve. It branches of the base of the skull and innervates the skin around the eye and the parts of the face and muzzle that feel sensation. But the origin of the sneeze is in your brain; it’s not in your nose.” Tere is also something called cluster tic syndrome—another problem in which blood vessels in the central nervous system are next to or associated with the trigeminal nerve and cause these signs. Tis is similar to what causes cluster headaches in people. “In humans, a trigeminal nerve problem can cause facial pain with nasal discharge, eye tearing, sneezing, etc.,” said Wilkins. “Tere may be a seasonality, with periods of remission at frst. A lot of headshaker horses may start seasonally but eventually have the problem yearround.” Horse owners might think the problem is due to allergies because of the seasonality, in the beginning. Some horses only headshake while being ridden. “I recommend trying face masks that also act like sunglasses, or try a nose net, or both,” said Wilkins. “ Some face masks and ear nets can help block sunlight and wind. Some horses don’t like wind and do more headshaking if it’s a windy day or if there is a fan blowing on them in the barn.” DIAGNOSTICS

Dr. John Madigan at the University of California, Davis has done a lot of research on headshaking in horses. One of the causes he frst described was equivalent to what people who are sun sneezers experience. “It seems to be sensory summation inside the brain that makes the trigeminal nerve fre excessively,” said Wilkins. “When you need to sneeze, you can sometimes stop it if you push against

Headshaking behavior might be due to something like an ear infection or some other physical problem. “Tis is why the horse needs a complete physical examination, to make sure there is nothing wrong in the ears, mouth, or eyes—no foaters or iris cysts bouncing in and out of their visual plane,” said Wilkins. “I usually do endoscopy of the upper airway and guttural pouches, just to see if there is a problem since headshaking can occur early in horses that develop something called temperohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO). When we diagnose a horse with THO, we often fnd that the horse has been a headshaker or recently started headshaking. “It is always a good idea to take skull radiographs, to rule out anything odd such as a foreign body up the nose that isn’t visualized with the endoscope. Skull radiographs can also help with a THO diagnosis. Routine bloodwork is also helpful.

Some horses respond well to this treatment, but you can’t use this in a racehorse. “Data on treatments can be hard to get; horses don’t always do the headshaking at the time we are examining them. When we do trigeminal nerve blocks, the horse must be doing the headshaking at the time or we can’t tell whether it works. It’s like blocking a lameness. “Some horses reportedly respond to allergy desensitization shots and to antihistamine. “Another treatment is dexamethasone pulse therapy (intermittent administration rather than continual low doses), and this may be worthwhile if the horse has an infammatory response in the nerve. “Dexamethasone pulse therapy should be an oral treatment, not injections. Anyone trying this should work with their veterinarian for the proper protocol. Tis can be tried for four to six months. MIDDLE EAR INFECTIONS AND SKULL FRACTURES

Lynda Blythe, DVM, PhD, a professor of neuroscience at Oregon State University, has done research on headshaking, mainly looking at one of the more serious causes— middle ear infections that can affect the joint between the stylohyoid bone and the skull. This situation can become life-threatening. She started working with headshaking horses 28 years ago, when a headshaking horse was brought to her by a horse owner from Washington. Blythe discovered a disease that she subsequently named temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO). That year she saw three horses with this disease, two of which had a history of headshaking or ear rubbing. She found they had a middle ear problem that caused an excess production of bone, which destroys the temporohyoid joint between the skull and the stylohyoid bone that comes up from the tongue and larynx. The joint fuses, and when the horse moves its tongue, this can fracture the next weakest point of the skull in the area of the inner and middle ear. Some of these horses have headshaking as the only clinical sign. Most of them have a history of headshaking prior to development of acute neurological problems (due to the fractured skull). Some owners never see headshaking; they just fnd the horse down and it can’t get up. The facial muscles of the affected horse are twisted to one side and the head is held at a tilt. The joint at the base of the skull moves freely in a normal horse. But if there’s infammation of the bone (which can be caused by a middle ear infection), the joint becomes arthritic. When the bones of the joint move, it causes pain. This pain can cause headshaking. Once the joint fuses, there’s no pain and the horse stops headshaking. But then when the horse moves its tongue or larynx, there is risk of fracturing the skull. Blythe tells about a stallion that provided a classic example. When another stallion was brought into the barn, the resident stallion challenged the newcomer with a loud whinny, which involved moving the larynx forcefully. This fractured his skull, and within a couple minutes he was down on the ground. The fusion from the arthritis infammation becomes so strong that when it breaks, the fracture is adjacent to the fused portion, through the inner ear. With the skull fractured at that location, there will be bleeding, a lot of irritation, and

If that doesn’t help, you could try the cyproheptadine, and lastly the dexamethasone pulse therapy. “Something else that could be tried is 78

any bacteria present in the middle ear can go right into the brain. The stallion Blythe examined was brought to her within 12 hours, but she was unable to save him. He died of a massive infection of the brain. This is one reason to get a complete diagnosis if a horse starts to head shake. Skull radiographs in the area of the middle ear can help rule out THO or show that this is a problem. For a full examination Blythe anesthetizes the horse and radiographs the skull from below (with the horse on its back) and from each side. Sometimes she cultures fuid from the middle ear to see whether the horse has an infection. If the horse has fused bones at the temporohyoid joint below the middle ear, this may also be seen with an endoscope passed up into the guttural pouch. It must have a fair amount of change, due to the arthritis, to be obvious and visible with a scope, however. Blythe says she can see changes radiographically before they can be seen with the endoscope. With many headshaking horses, the changes have not all happened yet; the disease stemming from a middle ear infection hasn’t advanced far enough to visualize. She recommends taking more radiographs in six months. If it looks as if the horse is going to fuse that joint, Blythe surgically removes a piece of that bone. This does not affect the horse’s ability to eat. A false joint can be created so that tongue pressure won’t fracture the skull. Other veterinarians are now doing this procedure on horses that fracture. By taking out part of the stylohyoid bone, pressure is taken off the fracture site and allows it to create a fbrous rather than a bony union, which heals quickly and with less nerve damage. Blythe says this procedure is an attempt to resolve a possible problem and prevent risk for fracture. Some of these horses might not fracture without the surgery, but if they do, they may die if a middle ear infection cannot be controlled. Headshaking can have many other causes, but this behavior can be the earliest clinical sign of something very serious. A middle ear infection can be treated with antibiotics, but bony involvement and arthritic changes can’t be reversed. When the affected joint fuses, headshaking stops.
