From the EXECUTIVE CORNER ROBYN BLACK CTBA LOBBYIST
A BOLDER PATH FORWARD
I
n his 16th – and fnal – State of the State address on Jan. 25, Governor Jerry Brown called on legislators, stating the “bolder path is still our way forward.” In his 31-minute speech to a joint session of the legislature, he looked back on his many accomplishments and made clear there is much work to be done. He reminded the body that his most signifcant accomplishments were often only achieved with bi-partisan support – a reminder to us all that we must be bold and work with all gaming stakeholders on this path forward. In some four months the United States Supreme Court will rule on New Jersey’s federal Professional and Amateur Sports Betting Protection Act (PASPA) appeal. Many expect the high court to concur with the petitioners, which could open the door for other states to pass authorizing legislation. Should that occur, expect everyone to rush to the legislature to protect and or expand their piece of the potential sports-betting pie. Also in the next four months, racing will come into focus for many who often forget the sport once the Triple Crown runs its course. It’s time for us to be bold. Tere are 34 members on the Governmental Organization Committee, which oversees gaming. We need to get them next to a horse, and we need to remind
them of the importance of breeding and racing. We need to stay out front and remind them racing is sports wagering. Tey must stand with racing if they want it to continue in California. We have several new legislators on the policy committee (in part due to the fallout from sexual harassment scandals). We need to educate them. Te men and women represented by the racing unions will be very important in making sure any new legislation protects the interests of the brick-and-mortar establishments where they work and expands their opportunities. Te dedicated people who work on California’s Toroughbred farms need to be heard. We must work together to protect our future. Tribal casinos and cardrooms will certainly be at the table, and, as of now, they will likely disagree on who could ofer sports wagering, at least in California. Currently, these two gaming interests are battling over what the tribes view as illegal house banking by cardrooms, something strictly prohibited by Proposition 1A. Tis battle will certainly spill over to any sports wagering. High-tech companies might fght for inclusion, and professional and college sports will also advocate for their interests. We need to work now to build a coalition of like-minded interests and begin to educate policy makers be-
fore June. Internally, we need to have serious discussion regarding how any racing piece would look. Like any good bet a horseplayer would make, we need to do our homework, study the feld, hope for a great break, and then hope for a safe trip. Te Supreme Court has a couple of months, and the outcome is by no means certain. But in the event the door opens, we need to make sure we are prepared for the possibility that California might authorize sports wagering. Te CTBA will also closely watch new bills introduced before the legislative deadline next month and advocate on behalf of breeders. Gaming is not the only issue impacting your bottom line. Animal welfare and labor issues will be watched closely as the new bills are introduced. Talk to your legislators. Remind them that California is the only major racing state that does not allow alternative gaming to supplement purses. We are a $2.5 billion industry that employs more than 50,000 people. We are agriculture, gaming, open space, and tourism. We are part of the storied history of California. Te governor’s great-grandfather, August Schuckman, sailed to America in 1849 on a ship named Perseverance. We too, will persevere with hard work, homework, knowing the feld, and a little luck.

On New Year’s Day, Pee Wee Reese started 2018 of right for California-breds with a sharp victory in the $98,375 Joe Hernandez Stakes at Santa Anita. Slated down the hillside turf course, the Hernandez attracted a feld of 10, with fellow Cal-bred Richard’s Boy favored and Pee Wee Reese the second choice. Jockey Joe Talamo piloted Nick Alexander’s homebred for trainer Phil D’Amato. Pee Wee Reese took the lead early and clicked of quick fractions of :21.96 and :44.64. He led at every call, eventually beating Pee Wee Reese wins Joe Hernandez Stakes Next Shares by 2 3⁄4 on New Year’s Day lengths in 1:12.37 1 for about 6 ⁄2 furlongs. Richard’s Boy fnished third. “I know we went :44, but it felt like :46,” said Talamo. “He’s got incredible speed, and he has the ability to relax and fnish.” Alexander bred the Unbridled’s Song mare Bluegrass Belle to Tribal Rule to get Pee Wee Reese, now a 5-year-old horse. Tribal Rule and Bluegrass Belle are both deceased, and Alexander said that hopefully Pee Wee Reese will “be a stallion for us.”

HISTORY
GOLDEN DOC A, in winning the Las Virgenes Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Feb. 9, 2008, became Unusual Heat’s frst grade 1 winner. That accomplishment signaled just what a powerhouse stallion Unusual Heat would become for California. It was also the frst grade 1 for owner Ron McCauley, who had purchased Golden Doc A from owners Madeline Auerbach and Barry and David Abrams. David bred Golden Doc A in California from the Crested Wave mare Penpont, and Barry trained her. Madeline and her son Harris were the driving forces behind Unusual Heat’s stud career. Rafael Bejarano rode 8-5 favorite Golden Doc A to her length victory over Lovely Isle in the Las Virgenes, with the Calbred getting the mile distance in 1:35.86.
25 YEARS AGO California-bred SOUTHERN TRUCE upset champion Paseana in the $300,000 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (G1) at Santa Anita Feb. 28, 1993. “This is as great as anything I’ve experienced in racing,” said Roger Stein, who trained Southern Truce for Peggy Johnson’s Regal Rose Stable. Corey Nakatani
piloted Southern Truce to a head victory over Chris McCarron and Paseana, the Cal-bred completing 11⁄8 miles in 1:49.46. Mr. and Mrs. Van Rose bred Southern Truce, a 5-year-old daughter of Truce Maker—Chief’s Beauty, by Chieftain. Southern Truce eventually won 19 of 50 starts for earnings of $867,578.
50 YEARS AGO February 1968 proved an excellent month for California-breds at Santa Anita. The run of good luck actually began Jan. 30, when TIME TO LEAVE won the Pasadena Stakes. Two days later SHARP DECLINE followed with the El Monte Handicap. SHARP CURVE captured the Feb. 9 Santa Paula Handicap, and KINGS FAVOR won the Feb. 12 San Pasqual Handicap. But MOST HOST scored the biggest win when he took the $100,000 Charles H. Strub Stakes Feb. 10 because he defeated Damascus, the previous season’s Horse of the Year, by a head. Bill Harmatz rode Most Host for trainer Gene Cleveland. J.T. Jones bred Most Host, a son of My Host—Alga, by Foubourg, and the 4-year-old colt raced for Mrs. Frank C. Bishop and Mrs. Jack Robbins.

Beginning with the 2018 breeding season, The Jockey Club has added a $35 fee for each mare reported bred by a stallion on the annual Report of Mares Bred form. The fee will supplement the industry support already provided by The Jockey Club for Thoroughbred aftercare initiatives, including the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA), and Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.). In coordination with The Jockey Club of Canada, funds raised from Canadian customers of The Jockey Club will be directed to Canadian Thoroughbred aftercare organizations to supplement their efforts. Jack Van Berg
COADY PHOTOGRAPHY
Jack Van Berg, the Hall of Fame trainer who saddled 6,523 career winners, including 1988 Horse of the Year Alysheba, died Dec. 27 in Hot Springs, Ark., of cancer. He was 81. The man who almost single-handedly created the concept of a national trainer, with divisions at several tracks simultaneously, Van Berg based in Southern California for many years. During that time, he trained Alysheba, winner of the 1987 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1), as well as the 1988 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). In California, Alysheba won the 1988 Santa Anita Handicap (G1), Charles H. Strub Stakes (G1), and San Bernardino Handicap (G2). Van Berg also trained Gate Dancer in California, a colt famous for his erratic racing style that led to Van Berg’s outftting him in earmuffs. Gate Dancer won the 1984 Preakness. Vilzak was among the California-breds Van Berg trained.
The son of Green Dancer—Zippy Do, by Hilarious, won the 1987 Hollywood Turf Cup Invitational Handicap (G1T). Van Berg also trained Cal-bred graded winner French Seventyfve and Cal-bred stakes winner Wheatly Special. A son of Hall of Fame trainer Marion Van Berg, Jack traveled extensively during the 1970s, as he juggled the many divisions of his national stable. He mentored such trainers as Bill Mott, Frankie Brothers, and Loren Rettele. If he hadn’t trained horses, Jack Van Berg might have auctioned them for a living. He put his distinctive auctioneering style to good use for numerous charitable causes, including art auctions hosted by CTBA Sales. Scheduled around the annual Del Mar yearling sale, the art auctions drew many people, and Jack cajoled and sometimes teased them into bidding substantial sums for charity. Earlier in his career Van Berg had been by far the leading trainer at Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha, Neb., for nearly 20 years. He became the frst trainer to win 5,000 races, getting that victory at Arlington Park in Chicago. Van Berg’s survivors include his son, Tom, a trainer, and daughters, Tori, Tammy, and Traci. Another son, trainer Tim Van Berg, predeceased his father.

Coming Up Roses Racehorses aren’t the only equine athletes that can successfully return from serious injury. In her position as the annual hoof inspector for the horses in the Pasadena Rose Parade, California Toroughbred Foundation President Ada Gates Patton learned the story of Rusty, one of the Belgian-Quarter Horses that pulled the Wells Fargo Stagecoach. As reported in Fran Jurga’s Te Hoof Blog (www.hoofblog.com), three years ago in David Helmuth, Rusty, Ada Gates Patton Georgia, Rusty sufered a splint-bone fracture in a front leg after being kicked by another horse in a pasture. Te next day Rusty’s leg was very swollen, and his owner, David Helmuth, contacted his local veterinarian, who referred them to the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Te injury had quickly become infected, and Rusty became very lame. He had to be given antibiotics intravenously and then undergo general anesthesia so that a team of surgeons could operate and remove the infected bone. Te horse recovered completely, and he was one of the lead horses to pull the stagecoach in the 2018 parade in Pasadena. Te University of Georgia Bulldogs had a good day too, defeating Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl.

Heck Yeah, by California’s own champion Acclamation, stays undefeated in Turf Sprint Stakes
CALIFORNIA CUP TURF SPRINT STAKES
HECK YEAH
ECLIPSE CHAMPION SIRES FIRST STAKES WINNER BY EMILY SHIELDS
P
art-owner Bob Baedeker joked that Phoenix-based breeder Michael Pageler went “against all of our advice” when he sent the Maria’s Mon mare Lutess to frst-year Old English Rancho stallion Acclamation. Pageler ended up with the last laugh, as the second foal from that mating, which he and Baedeker own in partnership with Dr. Michael Sigband, Heck Yeah, won the $102,415 California Cup Turf Sprint Stakes at Santa Anita Jan. 27.
Lutess, bred by Jerry and Ann Moss, was claimed six times in her career, twice going to the barn of trainer Bob Bafert via Baedeker’s Live Your Dream Racing 28
Stable. Her racing career ended with three wins in 19 starts, but with two generations of non-winners in her immediate pedigree, she did not seem a solid broodmare prospect. Her frst foal is an unraced 4-year-old Acclamation flly, with Heck Yeah being born one year later in 2015. Baedeker had the colt shipped in to train with Bafert’s juvenile crop last year. Expectations were low that he would make the cut in such a deep stable. But Heck Yeah trained forwardly and ultimately broke his maiden by 51⁄4 lengths on the dirt in his debut at
Los Alamitos last year. A switch to turf for the Cal Cup proved no problem. “(Bafert) was confdent he’d handle the grass,” Baedeker said. After starting a step slowly, jockey Drayden Van Dyke let Heck Yeah settle in eighth early in a feld of 12, then angled out and ran down their rivals. By the time Heck Yeah hit the sixteenth pole, he was drawing away to a 21⁄2-length victory, stopping the clock in 1:13.61 for the distance of about 61⁄2 furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course. Psycho Dar fnished second, with Campaigner a head back in third. Heck Yeah became the frst stakes winner for Acclamation, the Eclipse champion older male of 2011 who earned of $1,958,048 with six grade 1 victories. Te stallion is also represented by grade 1-placed Take the One O One. Another runner, Accountability, fnished third in the Unusual Heat Turf Classic Presented by City National Bank later on the Cal Cup card. Unbeaten in two starts, Cal-bred Heck Yeah has earned $84,000. He is providing thrills for his breeder and ownership group, some of whom got involved with lower-level horses and have been rewarded with a horse of this caliber. “I’ve always liked it,” Pageler said of racing. “I’d been a fan for a long time, then fnally got a chance to know somebody who knew somebody.” He still owns Lutess, who produced a Coil colt in 2016 and a Surf Cat colt last year. She is not in foal for 2018. “I have a lot of fun,” Pageler said. Heck Yeah could make the coming season even more so.

Industry Interview
WALKING THE TALK
FRANK STRONACHÕS COMMITMENT TO CALIFORNIA
W
Stronach’s commitment to racing and breeding has been substantial for many years throughout the country. His eforts were recognized this year, as he was honored with the Eclipse Award of Merit, given for a lifetime of outstanding achievement in service to the Toroughbred industry. Stronach, in an interview with California Toroughbred, said he particularly wants to help keep the small-scale breeders, owners, and trainers in the industry, people he emphasized are “the backbone of racing.” In early January, Stronach toured several breeding farms and decided to stand Shaman Ghost at Debbie and Tom Stull’s Tommy Town Toroughbreds in Santa Ynez (see page 10). He said he plans to bring mares out to support the stallion, who is standing for $10,000. Stronach pointed out that Shaman Ghost (Ghostzapper— Getback Time, by Gilded Time) has never stood elsewhere and that he is coming to California right of the racetrack. Shaman Ghost earned $3,859,311, and Californians saw him win the 2017 Santa Anita Handicap (G1). Champion Canadian 3-year-old male of 2015, Shaman Ghost won that year’s Queen’s Plate. His victories also include the 2015 Ma32

ith his announcement that he would stand Shaman Ghost in California, Frank Stronach afrmed the support that he is bringing to the California breeding industry. He wants to strengthen both the breeding and racing industries in the state to help everyone, which includes Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields, the two California tracks owned by Te Stronach Group.

good idea where we can improve. Te backbone of racing is the smaller owners, smaller breeders, and the smaller trainers, (what) I would consider anywhere between fve and 20 horses. “You have so many people involved, and the primary reason they get up at 4 or 5 o’clock every morning, seven days a week, is they all chase that dream of a lifetime change. Plus, they do love it. Tey have that hope, ‘Gee, if I come up with that big stake horse, I can make a better life for my kids.’ “But the problem we have in California is that maybe the fve leading trainers maybe take 70% of all the purses. Tat means the smaller trainers can’t make a living.” Stronach pointed out the difculty of small-scale breeders, owners, and trainers competing against people with large Kentucky operations who “ship some expensive 2-year-olds or yearlings back, so the little guys don’t stand a chance.”
When Santa Anita began its 2017-18 racing season, the condition book began to refect those ideas. Te frst book contained races with such restrictions as for “homebreds or horses purchased at public auction for $100,000 or less” and “trainers with 20 or less horses in their care in California.” “Te track managers must be allowed to write the condition book,” said Stronach. — Frank Stronach “Tey know what horses are stabled at the Pledging to help give everyone an op- track, and they cannot write the thing to portunity to do well in the business, please all the big owners. But racehorses would have no value if there is no racetrack.’ Racetracks are on very valuable land areas. I want to make sure that racing stays alive and that Santa Anita isn’t developed into housing, a mall, or whatever. “Tere are more horses sold for $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $30,000 than there are for $200,000, $300,000 (or more). Occasionally, a small breeder comes up with the non-expensive mare that produces a graded racehorse. Tat’s why many small breeders stay in.” Shaman Ghost and new race conditions are two ways Stronach said he wants to help make California racing and breeding more prosperous and healthier. “We’ve got to work together and not chase away the Multiple grade 1 winner and champion Canadian classic winner Shaman Ghost will be a valuable addition to the ranks of California stallions in 2018 smaller operators,” he said.

CTBA Trainer of the Year
A MAN WITH
A PLAN I
BY GENE WILLIAMS
n the fortnight before the dawning of 2017, Jef Bonde made a plan for his racing stable. He came up with a motto born of the conviction that he could make it work.
It went like this: “We will strive to get a lot out of a little.” Bonde’s take on how things went during the year: “We’re sitting here with 25 horses, and we got a lot of productivity out of that small number.” Proof of that is shown in 41 victories on the year, many by part of his solid coterie of California-bred runners, with an 18% strike rate in 228 starts and purse earnings of $1,717,832. Further proof will come on the night of Feb. 12, when the 63-year-old native Californian takes the spotlight as the state’s Trainer of the Year for 2017 at the annual California Toroughbred Breeders Association annual awards dinner in the tastefully glitzy Chandelier Room at Santa Anita. Te salute will be part of an evening that will include induction of the year’s Hall of Fame choices, and announcement of the year’s California-bred champions, leading 36

stallions, leading breeder, and Horse of the Year. Te association’s annual meeting will precede the dinner. Bonde, a veteran of more than 40 years as a trainer, is not exactly new to the spotlight. He has trained a number of horses that have covered themselves with glory by winning several graded stakes and, while doing that, turned some of the light on their trainer. But this will be his frst time for an individual honor. Tat has not escaped Bonde’s attention. Is he happy and honored? “Absolutely. Anytime anyone says something good about you, you gotta be thankful for that,” he said, adding, “Te horse runs, not the man. I’ve had a lot of good horses and won a lot of awards for them over the years, but I think this is the frst one I’ve ever got for myself. “You’ve got to have good clients who will bring you good horses, and you’ve got to be able to be personable and attainable — all the things that owners are looking for. It may not be there in the beginning, but as you get older, you get more polished in what you do.” Many of those good horses he’s trained

over the years have been Cal-breds, including, just to name a few, stakes winners Sierra Sweetie, You’re Late, Sierra Sunset, Devons Smokin, Sterling Cat, Ismelucky, Miss Sunset, and Bookies Luck. Te last three have provided highlights for Bonde’s 2017 campaign. Miss Sunset, owned by Philip Lebherz and Alan Klein, scored fve victories, including the Lexus Raven Run Stakes (G2) at Keeneland. Larry and Marianne Williams’ Bookies Luck captured the $200,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes on the Nov. 4 Breeders’ Cup undercard at Del Mar, and Ismelucky, owned by Bonde and Jerome Russell, won the Barretts Debutante Stakes. For the record, Bonde’s lifetime statistics show 11,007 starts, 1,777 wins, 1,610 seconds, 1,474 thirds, and $44,114,255 in earnings. “I’m one of those guys you hear about being born on the racetrack,” Bonde said proudly in his quiet drawl. “My father and my grandfather were horseshoers, so we were always on tracks here in California. My brother was also a horseshoer though he got hurt a while back and now he’s my assistant trainer in Northern California.

the break between Golden Gate and Bay Meadows, and my fve horses [including Mr. Doubledown] were put in this compound, which turned out to be Bobby Frankel’s barn. So I’m thinking, ‘Boy, I hope I can do a quarter of what he’s doing at the meet.’ Well, my horse [Mr. Doubledown] jumped up and beat one of his in the Hollywood Turf Express. Imagine a young kid being in that ‘palace’ and then beating a Frankel horse in a grade 3.”

I still have a small string at Golden Gate, with my main string being in Southern California now. “I spent several years training my horses at the track in Pleasanton — and I still have a home there — but when the track closed last year, I relocated my top horses to Santa Anita.” Bonde and his wife, Stephanie, live in Arcadia, not too many furlongs from the Santa Anita backstretch. Tey have fve sons and a daughter, none of whom have chosen racing as a career. Recalling his frst job on the racetrack as a teenager with longtime California trainer Jerry Dutton, Bonde said, “Jerry was a really good horse trainer, and he made you work hard. Most people who worked for him needed to have a good work ethic. Tat put a good foundation under you.” Bonde went on to work for California trainers Tex Johnson, Don Jefries, and Emmett Campbell, who had California-bred Horse of the Year Silveyville a few years after Bonde was with him. “I started like any other beginner,” Bonde said, “and then I went up the ladder slowly under those guys. I learned from some really good horsemen. Tey ran good barns and were good men to observe while they worked. Observing the things a good trainer does is really important. If you don’t pick up on those things, it can cost you races later on. “Detail is everything in our game. It’s still a key part of the job. Te keener the competition, you’d better be paying attention.” Bonde got his trainer’s license in 1974, and the early going was rough in spite of that foundation. Looking back on that, he said, “For the frst four or fve years, I kinda starved to death. I didn’t have a lot of horses. But then it started to grow.” As important as Cal-breds have been to his career, Bonde is quick to give much credit to early owner Jack Retzlof’s Kentucky-bred Mr. Doubledown for helping him get established on the California racing scene. “He was a top-fight sprinter,” Bonde said, “and he gave me my frst graded stakes victory.” Te horse also gave him one of his greatest thrills, the trainer says. “I was stabled at Hollywood Park during
Bonde trainee Miss Sunset wins the 2017 grade 2 Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland
Bonde’s career also got a lift from former trainer Richard Mulhall, who at the time was racing manager for Te Toroughbred Corp., when Mulhall sent Bonde the 2-year-old flly Spain. She fnished second in the Vinery Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1), third in the Oak Leaf Stakes (G1), and fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), all in 1999, for Bonde. Te flly joined the D. Wayne Lukas stable the next year and won the Breeders’ Cup Distaf (G1). Te swift Smiling Tiger, a multiple graded stakes winner and earner of $1.4 million in purse money, became Bonde’s most impressive campaigner. Te horse’s half sister, She’s a Tiger, was also a major winner for Bonde, capturing the Del Mar Debutante and fnishing frst in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, though disqualifed and placed second for interference. She’s a Tiger won that year’s Eclipse Award as the nation’s top 2-year-old flly, Bonde’s only Eclipse winner so far. Bonde has become known as a top train-

er of 2-year-olds, and for that he gives credit to his initial mentor, the late Dutton. “Jerry stressed preparation, and he always said early wins go to the most prepared horse,” said Bonde. “A lot of guys don’t press their young horses early, but when we decide to run them, they’re ready to go — and win. As long as a horse is mature and ready to go, then you go.” What about fllies running against males, something which many trainers shy away from? “It depends on the flly,” Bonde says. “You have to feel your way on something like that. Tere sure are occasions when fllies can beat the boys. It doesn’t have anything to do with size. Tey just have to have enough talent. Tat’s the key factor, and that falls on the trainer to decide.” Bonde has been very active over the years in California horse sales, and success with what might be called “bargains” has been a hallmark. He says of his approach to buying at the sales, “I strictly chase horses. I live by the seat of my pants. I go fnd a horse and then I try to sell him of [to regular clients] until I get it covered. “I used to go to the sales in Kentucky, but the East Coast money got a little too strong and made it more difcult for me to get a top horse there. So I came up with a game plan to buy the best Cal-breds possible, and it’s worked pretty well for us.” He doesn’t hesitate to run his top Calbreds in major open-class races. Te best examples would be Miss Sunset’s victory in the 2017 Raven Run and Sierra Sunset’s win in Oaklawn Park’s Rebel Stakes (G2), a Kentucky Derby prep, in 2008. “On the racetrack, you get your ups and downs, and you just have to learn to appreciate those up times,” Bonde said. “Like any other sport, things can change quickly. You have to hope and pray that everything stays on an even keel.” One way he has maintained an even keel is through very little turnover in workers over his years in the business. “Many of my people have been with me for years, some for 25 years or more,” he said. “I’m bilingual, so that helps with communication, and I treat them like family so they don’t go anywhere.” Now that he and his stable have attained their goals for 2017, what’s next? “Well, we roll our sleeves back and go after it again.”

He has settled in as part of the stable of exercise riders for the large and successful training operation of Doug O’Neill, based at Santa Anita Park. As part of the O’Neill exercise team, he often fnds himself guiding the training regime of sons and daughters of successful California stallion Square Eddie. Te idea that he “guides the training regime” of those horses might be a bit of a stretch, as Cedeno is quick to point out. “I ride a lot of Square Eddie horses and I like them,” said 55-year-old Cedeno, but he easily squelches the idea that he controls things when he’s aboard one. “Tey have their own way of doing things, so you gotta go their way. runners. You don’t want to take that awayy from them, so we have to work with them m their way or it’s no way.” Since Paul and Zillah Reddam own n and raced Square Eddie from the O’Neilll barn, Cedeno said, “We always get a lot off those babies. Tey’re very active — theyy bite, they kick, and they like to play a lot. So you have to be on your toes around them and when you gallop them.” Once in a while, he says, one might show a whole diferent side — perhaps a trait coming from the dam’s side. “I worked with one like that — Found Money,” said Cedeno. “He was like a puppy.” California-bred Found Money also was among Square Eddie’s group of solid runners, posting two stakes victories as a 2-year-old and for a time considered as a prospect for the 2016 Kentucky Derby (G1). Unfortunately, he was severely injured during a workout at Santa Anita on April 4, 2016, and was euthanized. In reporting the colt’s death, O’Neill said, “He was a barn favorite with a big personality and will be missed by all.” Count Cedeno among those. Tough his career was short, Found Money was a productive runner with three victories and two seconds in nine starts. His purse earnings reached $292,100. How About Zero is among the Square Eddie ofspring Cedeno currently rides in the mornings. Te 4-year-old Cal-bred flly won the 2016 Golden State Juvenile Fillies, and she has fnished second in the 2017 California Cup Oaks and 2016 Generous Portion Stakes. However, Cedeno’s connection with Cal-breds didn’t start with the Square Eddies. Tat came way back in 1989, not long after he had come to the United States from Panama, with stops in Mexico City and Caliente along the way. Tough he rode mostly for trainer Mel Stute in those early days, he picked up a major ride in the barn of the legendary Lazaro Barrera. Cedeno rode Endow, a Cal-bred son of Flying Paster, to victory in that year’s California Derby (G3) at Golden Gate Fields. In that race, Endow defeated Calbred Flying Continental — who became 46

a two-time grade 1 winner — for a third time. Obviously, Cedeno began thinking Kentucky Derby for himself and Endow, but it was not to be. Te speedy Endow didn’t seem a Derby candidate in the mind of the canny Barrera. Instead, the trainer chose to send horse and rider to the Illinois Derby (G2), where they fnished third. Flying Continental went on to the Kentucky Derby, where he fnished a well-beaten 12th behind winner Sunday Silence.
Another good horse Cedeno lists among those he rode is Order, whom he partnered many times for trainer Jude Feld. Order provided a stakes victory for Cedeno. “He was a very fast horse,” the Panamanian said. Tough Cedeno was not a member of the O’Neill training staf at the time, Lava Man holds a special spot in Cedeno’s racing lore. “He was already retired when I came to work for Doug [in 2014], but he had become a stable pony by then,” Cedeno

Cedeno says the younger horses learn valuable lessons during morning training from the seasoned Lava Man
said. “He always seems ready to run. He remembers what it was like, so it’s easy for him to teach the young horses how to handle themselves. “He sort of bosses them around and tries to teach them how to do it. Sometimes when he takes a horse to the gate, you can tell he’s getting a little excited when he’s behind the gate. He remembers. He’s a pretty cool horse, and he still looks good.” Born in Panama City, Panama, on Dec. 31, 1962, Cedeno began his equine odyssey by riding horses on his grandfather’s farm outside of the capital. He spent summer vacations from school at the farm, and one of his chores was to take lunch to those working in the felds. “My cousin and I would ride horses to the felds with lunches,” Cedeno said, “and then we’d ride to the river and swim and give the horses a bath. On the way back to the house, we’d race. It was great fun.” Eventually, Cedeno graduated from Panama’s jockey school and began his riding career in Mexico City after leaving Panama in 1987. Following six months in Mexico City, he moved his tack to Agua Caliente in Tijuana and spent six months there. He then moved on to Southern Cali-
fornia, where he rode primarily for Stute. His frst victory in the U.S. came aboard the Stute-trained Lemon Juice in a Hollywood Park claiming race. Overall, Cedeno, who has parents, three brothers, and a son still in Panama, put up lifetime riding statistics of 685 wins, 738 seconds, and 853 thirds, with purse earnings of $6,385,734. He recalls that he was doing pretty well in those early years, but a spill at Hollywood Park in 1991, in which he sufered a broken hip and pelvis, took quite a toll on his career. “I was doing good at that time, riding good horses and winning a lot of races,” he said. “Tat stopped me for a long time—seven months. Tere were a lot of good jocks in the room at that time [Laft Pincay Jr., Eddie Delahoussaye, and Chris McCarron among them], and after being of for seven months, it was tough to get back to where I had been.” He remembers how he was in something of a Catch-22 situation as he tried to make his way back. “Trainers would tell me they needed to see me ride before they could put me on their horses,” he said. “It was hard to prove myself to them without good horses to ride. So you have to show them the best you can on other horses—sometimes real
longshots.” When he couldn’t make things change, he went east to Ohio and Kentucky and found himself often riding day and night, at Beulah Park in Ohio and Turfway Park in Northern Kentucky. He was riding in unfamiliar cold climes. “I tell you this, I don’t like the cold weather,” he said. “I never wore gloves, but I had to there. But I would take them of in the gate and—boom—when the gate opens I can’t feel my hands. I did that for two years there, but fnally I took a break and went home for a month to warm up.” He returned west again, this time to Longacres at Seattle and raced there until that track closed in 1992. Ten it was back to Southern California, but the injury bug bit again and he was of nine months following rotator cuf surgery required after a spill while working for O’Neill and riding occasionally. “After I healed up, I came back and got my job back,” Cedeno said. “But I haven’t ridden races since then. I’ve tried to lose weight, but at my age, it’s hard to do. So now, I’m happy in my job and know I’ll be able to be involved with horses.”
As a youth during summers on his grandfather’s farm in Panama, Cedeno develped a love for horses

OFF AND RUNNING MATT DINERMAN: THE GOLDEN TONES OF GOLDEN GATE BY JACK SHINAR
O
It’s a difcult art, requiring splendid memorization and vocal skills that can take years, even decades, to master, which makes the sudden emergence of Matt Dinerman, now in his frst season of calling the races at Golden Gate Fields, all the more remarkable. As more people are becoming aware, Dinerman brings a polish to his calls and a wisdom of horse racing that simply belie the fact that he’s just 25 years of age. And he appreciates it. “Pinch me,” the San Diego-area native said during a recent interview in the marketing ofce of the picturesque Northern California track overlooking San Francisco Bay. “I just really can’t believe I’ve been 48

More important to him, he knows this is the same booth that was an early career stop for many of racing’s contemporary announcing giants, such as Larry Collmus, Trevor Denman, Michael Wrona, Frank Mirahmadi, Paul Allen, and Vic Staufer.

He called it all precisely and left the result for the stewards to sort out. “I can see everything really clear (from the booth), but I had no idea who won that race,” said Dinerman, who in addition to his announcing duties also does a

Veteran Southern California track announcer Trevor Denman has been an inspiration and a mentor to Dinerman
Candy Ride’s victory in the 2003 Pacifc Classic acted as a catalyst for Dinerman’s interest in horse racing
pre-race analysis and gives selections for each race from the booth. Dinerman (pronounced Dinner-man) came to Golden Gate after 21⁄2 seasons as the track announcer at Emerald Downs, located in the shadow of Mount Rainier south of Seattle. He got his start in racing walking hots for trainer John Sadler during the Del Mar summer meets while he was still in high school at Canyon Crest Academy. Sadler cranks out graded stakes winners with regularity, and Dinerman reveled in it, working with top runners such as Black Mamba, Evita Argentina, Cozi Rosie, Kettle Corn, Switch, Twirling Candy, and his favorite, Sidney’s Candy. As a boy, Dinerman fell in love with racing and horses after seeing Sidney’s Candy’s sire, Candy Ride, upset Medaglia d’Oro in the 2003 Pacifc Classic Stakes (G1) with his father, David. Dinerman knew even then that he wanted a career in the sport. After three summers with Sadler, he was considering training as a possible future. “Everyone was very kind to me; it was a cool team,” Dinerman said. “It was typical for a young kid, thinking I want to be a trainer. But eventually I realized how much work and dedication (it required). You had to be there every morning— there was no vacation, no days of—and so I decided to explore other avenues.” Bloodstock consultant Gayle Van Leer, who had worked with Golden Eagle Farm
fun,” Dinerman said. “As the steward, I had to run Trevor up all sorts of things and help him out, so I got to know him and talk to him. “For my birthday that year my uncle and aunt got me a pair of binoculars, and I asked Dan if it would be all right if I went into this little booth (in the press box) and practice calling races. He said sure. I took over the booth at the far end because I didn’t want anyone to hear me. I wasn’t confdent yet, but I had this great feeling that this would be fun. It’s an oddball job, but for whatever reason, I was really hooked on it.” Actually, though, he admits the seeds of his chosen career might have been planted much earlier. “My dad said when I was really young I would ask him questions about Trevor Denman all the time. I don’t remember a ton, but things like, ‘How does he judge the lengths? How does he remember all those names?’ I think it may have been a foreshadowing that deep down this desire was there.” And so, in that little booth at the end of the press box, Dinerman practiced. And he practiced. And he practiced some more. He accumulated about 150 race calls on his telephone recorder. He got up the nerve to tell Denman he wanted to be a track announcer, and he received encouragement from a number of diferent professionals once word got out about what he was doing.
and was a family friend and neighbor in the Carmel Valley region of San Diego, had helped Dinerman get on with Sadler’s barn. When Dinerman mentioned to her that he’d maybe like to try something else, she said she knew of an opening as a press box steward or publicity staf assistant. He soon landed a job at Del Mar working for Dan Smith and Mac McBride, and during that frst summer with them his path toward becoming a race caller began to take shape. At the time, Dinerman was attending nearby Palomar College in northern San Diego county. Lanky and athletic, he pitched for the baseball team while working toward a communications degree. He later transferred to Chapman College in Orange County (deciding soon after to give up baseball), where he graduated before taking over the announcing position at Emerald Downs. “Baseball was a big part of my childhood, and I played a lot from the age of 6 to 19,” Dinerman said. “I wasn’t getting a lot of innings (at Palomar), but I did okay, had a good earned run average. I was a crafty left-hander type; that was kind of my style. I played the outfeld when I was younger. But I identifed as a baseball player until horse racing came along.” Working in the Del Mar press box in 2012, he got to know track announcer Denman. “Te frst year was the frst time I thought that track announcing could be

and inviting experienced applicants. Dinerman knew he lacked experience, but he sent in his tapes anyway, which resulted in an audition. For the frst time, he realized he’d be speaking on a live microphone at Emerald Downs, not his recorder. “Here it is, the horses are in the post parade,” he recalled vividly. “I’m shaking. I
Gate job after Mirahmadi accepted a similar position last fall with the New York Racing Association. Te young race caller had been serving as Golden Gate’s on-air handicapping analyst at the time following the conclusion of the Emerald Downs season, so he had gotten to know his way around the track. He said he doesn’t pattern himself after any one announcer, preferring to pick up little pieces from his favorite callers. Now that he has confdence with the basics, he’ll embellish his calls with an occasional witticism. “My style is reporting the race,” Dinerman said. “I believe that Trevor is a reporter and (Tom) Durkin is a big entertainer. Teir styles are very diferent. I like to put myself right there in the middle. Accuracy is something I very much stress.” Dinerman said he regretted leaving the Washington track community, where he had gained acceptance and further refned his announcing style. But, he said, there were multiple reasons for the move to Te Stronach Groupowned Golden Gate, including the arrival of a new general manager, David Duggan. Under Duggan, Dinerman noted that the fall meet generated a 12% increase in all-sources handle and an 8% hike in on-track wagering, a trend he expects will continue because of a fresh marketing approach. In addition to his microphone duties, Dinerman is handling much of the Golden Gate publicity, including social media posts, barn notes and press releases, a little marketing, and some television spots. As he discovered at Emerald, calling races is mentally draining, and he admits he’ll appreciate having most of the summer to recuperate while racing in Northern California shifts to the fair circuit. “I’m thrilled to be here, and to be honest I haven’t thought very far into the future,” he said. “To be truly happy with what you’re doing, you have to be happy with what you’re doing now. I’d love to be at a larger track at some point, but at the same time I love it here. Tere’s only so many places up that I can go.” SHANE MICHELI/ VASSAR PHOTOGRAPHY
“Eventually the end of the meet comes around, and I decide I’ve got to give Trevor these calls,” Dinerman said. “So I’m going through them and tossing them out. Ten what happened was, I found two calls that I thought were good. I still don’t like them, but these were the best I could fnd and I just had to do it. “I emailed him the calls, and a couple of days later I go up there (to the announcing booth) to give him his stuf for the races that day, and he takes of his glasses and he says, ‘Oh, I listened to your calls.’ I was like, ‘Oh really?’ But deep down inside I was scared as anything. “And I’m waiting for him to say, ‘You’ve really got to work on this, and you’ve got to do this, and this and that.’ Trevor is such a gentle guy that, looking back, he would probably never say anything like that. I rarely tell people this because I don’t want people to think I’m bragging, but he said, ‘Of all the years I’ve been doing this, this is one of the best calls I’ve ever heard.’ I was shocked. “He’s like, ‘Honestly, the only advice I’d give you is you’re going a little too fast. Slow down a little bit because that’s a common thing up-andcoming announcers do is they go a little too fast. But even experienced announcers have to work on their pace. Other than that, I give you a 10 out of 10, the content’s good, your projection is good, the way you describe the race is good. Keep working on this because you’ve got a bright future.’ To me this was like Michael Jordan coming at you and saying, ‘You’re really good at basketball.’ Tat’s what it felt like to me.” Still, when your chosen profession has only a few dozen positions available in the entire country, opportunities can be few and far between. After an internship with HRTV fell through when TVG purchased that racing network in 2015, Dinerman was looking at fnishing up at Chapman in the spring and a third year assisting in the Del Mar press box—with no race-calling prospects. Tat’s when the announcement came from Emerald Downs that race caller Robert Geller was leaving to take the announcing job at Woodbine

I compare it to like when you are on a really fast roller coaster and you’re really scared, but then it starts and you’re okay. Tat’s how the race was. All of a sudden the gates open and it was, ‘Here we go!’ ” He said that afterward he couldn’t even remember what he’d said during the call. But Geller and the track management were impressed, and the next day, the track president, Phil Ziegler, ofered him the job. Dinerman, who is now living in the Richmond area, pursued the Golden

Orlando Gonzalez

COURTESY OF KATE BARTON
BY EMILY SHIELDS
When longtime California horseman Richard Barton made the decision to purchase Magali Farms and repurpose it as Barton Toroughbreds last year, he knew he would need an exceptional team. He also knew the perfect person to bring on board: Orlando Gonzalez. After nearly 21 years on the Southern California racing circuit
with trainer Mike Machowsky, Gonzalez knows racehorses inside and out. He was eager to learn more about breeding and foaling, but even so, when the opportunity arose, Gonzalez was initially hesitant. “I knew Mr. Barton for fve years, but I had only ever worked for Mike,” Gonzalez said. “I didn’t know if it would be okay to work a diferent job. But Mike said it would be good for me.” Gonzalez moved his wife and daughters to Santa Ynez over the summer and quickly settled into a new routine as Barton Toroughbreds’ lay-up manager. “I work with horses that had some physical problems on the racetrack, and our customers send them here for rehabilitation,” Gonzalez said. “Some have had surgeries on their knees and ankles and need 60 or 90 days. We take care of them, turn them out in day pens with sand, or use our vibration plate.” Manager Kevin Dickson, who oversaw Gonzalez’ transition during the busy time when the farm was frst becoming Barton Toroughbreds, said, “He was an absolute perfect ft for the layup aspect of our operation after working as Mike Machowsky’s right-hand man.” At any one time Gonzalez can be in charge of the care for 14 to 30 horses, but he wants to do more. “We had a meeting about nighttime foal watch,” Dickson recalled. “Everyone who lives on the farm is ‘on call’ at one time or

another. We made Orlando the number two call, but he’s so eager to learn that he begged to be number one. He wants to be hands on and learn all aspects of what we do.” “I love to work and always want to better my work,” Gonzalez said. “And I love it out here (in Santa Ynez). It has a really good school for the kids. I have brothers living in Los Angeles, and I keep telling them that life out here is the best and everyone is so nice.” Dickson could not be happier with Gonzalez’ progress. “He has been just a wonderful addition,” Dickson said. “Orlando is very good at what he does and with a great eagerness. He’s very loyal, goes above and beyond the call of duty for sure, and is always available. His English is very good, which is another attribute. He’s just a pleasure.” As the Barton operations settle in their new home and the farm continues to add mares and stallions—including the recently acquired grade 1 winner and millionaire stallion Misremembered—they will require talent like Gonzalez to keep up with the growth. “Orlando joined a crew over there that was outstanding to begin with, but he added another level,” said Dickson. “He’s my right arm as far as that’s concerned.”

ozamund Barclay can remember every horse she has ever bred, owned, or even worked with, and she has a certain level of afection for all of them. “I can honestly say I am fond of all the equines I have had the pleasure of raising, owning, purchasing, or caring
for,” Barclay said, adding, “Obviously, some take up a bit more room than others in my heart.” Her list is lengthy, populated by horses such as North Pacifc, Hi Fashioned, Estellara, Slew’s Charm, Commandress, Stay Positive, and Hot Gem. Her graded stakes-winning stallion Northern Causeway sits right at the top. His frst

foals will debut on the track this year. Barclay grew up in Portola Valley, Calif., where she frst took riding lessons as a 6-yearold on a retired racehorse. Her family moved to Vashon Island in Washington, where she continued her equine schooling with vaulting, eventing, Western pleasure, and games. By the time she was 14, Barclay was teaching lessons and helping to break horses. “Pony Club and my mother were great infuences in the importance of being educated and a good ‘horseman,’ ” she said. “I always felt guilty being paid to ride and work with horses after school and on weekends. I grew up riding on beautiful evergreen trails and beaches.” Barclay credits Carl and Karen Olson for her introduction to the racing business. She was babysitting their children and teaching them to ride when Carl asked Barclay to work with some Toroughbreds he raised. When Barclay turned 17, he got her a job working at Longacres. “Te rest is history,” Barclay said. “I was in love with the racetrack, the majestic Toroughbreds, and the idea that I could get paid to groom, gallop, and paddock horses.” Although Barclay meant to arrange her work at the track around her college classes, she admits that “inevitably, the reverse happened.” She got her trainer’s license at 21, training out of Longacres until it closed in 1992. Now she is a breeder, owner, and aftercare advocate. “I seriously try not to count the number of horses I have,” she said.

Although Barclay admits she “doesn’t have the answers,” she is concerned about the longevity of horse racing on the West Coast. “I am worried, as are all breeders and owners, with the growing concerns of the business of breeding and racing horses. We as an industry employ such a variety of people and support other agricultural industries and economic stimulus. I feel our business model is broken despite heroic eforts being made to revive it.” Tat said, she has “gratitude for people in the California Toroughbred Breeders Association, the Toroughbred Owners of California, and other horseman’s associations that are working, many at their own cost, to fnd resolutions. My hope is that we can make the industry attractive to new owners and fans and educate our legislators to the benefts of promoting the health of our industry.” Worries aside, Barclay is upbeat and passionate about the game. “It is difcult to explain that I remember all of the horses in my life, from the frst ones I rode, later groomed, trained, worked on for veterinarians, owned for racing, or now breeding,” she said. “Sometimes it is embarrassing because I don’t remember a person’s name or their children’s names, but I remember a horse they owned. I think many of those afected with this addiction to horses are the same.” She also had words of appreciation for Rancho San Miguel. “I feel blessed that they took on Northern Causeway and my mares,” she said. “Teir entire crew is passionate and dedicated to the best care they can provide. A college professor who frequented the racetrack once pointed out to me that if the prey was not fragile, the predators would go hungry, so without good caretakers, success is near impossible. “Horses in all sports are a humbling experience,” she added. “Every time you think you really know something, they have a way of putting you in your place. A person has to be an optimist and have stubborn perseverance for all who help in this industry. I have the above; let’s hope I have some more fast horses, too.”

She keeps retirees at her home in Washington and her broodmares and Northern Causeway at Rancho San Miguel in California. Northern Causeway was a $47,000 RNA at the 2010 Barretts May 2-year-old sale. His foals so far are remarkably correct and well-conformed out of a variety of mares. Te frst 2-year-olds are starting well. With a little racing luck and lots of hopes and prayers, success is a possible future.” Other horses that have made a mark for Barclay include stakes winners Estellara and Hi Fashioned, and stakes-placed North Pacifc and Slew’s Charm. She owns and bred multiple stakes-placed winner Algenon, and she bred Hot Gem, a California-bred who has gone on to fnish second in the Jan. 7 Ladies Overnight Handicap at Portland Meadows for Jonathan Nance, Barbara Eakin, and Randy Evers. Another equine dear to Barclay’s heart is Rising Cari, a Cal-bred son of Cari Country owned and trained by Mike and Patricia Harrington. Te chestnut horse won 16 of 68 starts from 1988-94. “Tey gave me the job of caring for him at my place in Washington during his senior years,” Barclay said. “He won so many races for them, so they provided retirement for him. He lived a long and healthy life, like a grandparent. At home we all felt that he enriched our lives and stole our hearts.” She feels that there is “something about old horses,” noting, “I have been privileged to care for my own and other people’s. Tey always fnd a way to give back, by tolerating our children, green farm help, and the yearlings they teach manners to.”

SAND CO COLIC

DETECTION AND PREVENTION
BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS
T
he term “sand colic” refers to abdominal pain due to irritation or impaction of the gastrointestinal tract after the horse ingests sand. In some instances, sand accumulation can create complete blockage. Grazing in sandy pastures or eating hay of the ground, horses often pick up bits of sand. Tey can easily pull up grass in sandy soils, and might ingest some of the sand clinging to the roots. Fed on the ground, a horse might eat a little sand as he cleans up the last wisps of hay or kernels

Horses fed in tubs can still ingest sand by eating feed spilled on the ground, especially in overgrazed pastures
of grain. Even if the horse were fed via bucket or feed rack, he might eat spilled feed from the ground. Te ingested sand usually moves through the digestive tract with the food and is passed in manure, but it can irritate the intestinal lining along the way. If very much sand accumulates, it weighs down the gut and might impair motility, hindering proper digestion and function. Irritation of the intestinal lining can lead to diarrhea, weight loss, and colic in some horses. If sand collects in the tract, the resulting reduction in motility hinders passage of sand and leads to more accumulation and, in some cases, a blockage. With a serious blockage, the horse could need surgery to remove the sand.

In some instances accumulating sand creates a complete blockage
To diagnose the problem, a veterinarian might listen to the ventral abdomen to hear whether sand is moving
Why this becomes a clinical problem in some horses while others seem to be able to carry fairly heavy sand burdens without a problem is still not understood. When sand becomes a problem, it is usually in the colon. Sand moves through the rest of the tract fairly quickly. When a horse becomes impacted, medical treatment is always tried frst to move the sand on through the tract. Veterinarians often treat these horses with a combination of psyllium and mineral oil via nasogastric tube to help lubricate the intestinal contents and get things moving through. Tis can be done repeatedly until the blockage is relieved. Many types of psyllium products are available for horses. Horsemen can do a fecal sand test themselves to watch for sand in the manure, and then use a sand-clearing type of supplement periodically if necessary. PREVENTING SAND COLIC
Dr. Allen Landes of Equine Medical Services in Laporte, Colo., said the most important thing with sand colic is pre-
68
vention. If horses are fed hay, care must be taken to ensure they don’t ingest sand. “We know that horses need to be fed low (on or near the ground) because it’s better for their lungs if they are not reaching up, eating from something like a hay net,” Landes said. “But if we are feeding on the ground, we need to have the hay contained in a place where the horse can’t consume sand and gravel at the same time. “Te other thing to avoid is overgrazing a pasture, especially on sandy soils. Grazing the plants down to the roots will generally result in ingesting some sand. In some regions (such as Florida and some places on the West Coast), you can’t avoid having horses on sandy pastures. In our area, here in the mountains of Colorado, we have places where there is a lot of granite that has eroded down to small particle size. It may not look like sand, but the particles are small enough to be inadvertently ingested.” In regions where horses might be at risk for sand consumption, Landes recommends putting them on some kind of

maintenance level of psyllium, added to their diet. Te fbrous psyllium tends to swell with moisture in the digestive tract, pick up sand, and carry it along, moving it out of the tract with the manure. “Now we are also looking at probiotics added to the psyllium, to improve gut health,” said Landes. Landes led a study looking at using probiotics and prebiotics in conjunction with psyllium. Te idea behind the study was that sand in the tract produces a certain amount of irritation and might lead to decreased motility, which in turn might lead to impaction. As the tract slows, digestion sufers, and the microbe population in the hindgut is altered, which in turn has a negative efect on digestion and motility. Te researchers added probiotics— some of the normal, helpful microbes that must be present at proper levels in the hindgut for optimum digestion and breakdown of fbrous material. Te reasoning was that adding these microbes might help keep gut motility at a more normal rate, which in turn might help

on through (without accumulating within the tract),” Landes explained. “I still see the psyllium-probiotic combination working today, and I think it’s now one of those ‘wonder supplements’ that we take for granted. It enables us to help these horses with gut problems. “It’s not just sand issues that I see it helping, but also horses that might have a bit of loose manure or diarrhea. I tell clients that psyllium is both a laxative and a help with diarrhea.” In his veterinary practice Landes con-
tinues to see horses with sand colic. “Te nice thing, however, is if clients can get their horses on the product or become proactive in preventing sand ingestion. It really helps.” He recently saw a horse that lost a dramatic amount of weight over a two-week period. “Te horse was out on a small dry-lot area that had been grazed down to nothing, and you could readily hear the sand moving around in his gut,” Landes said. “Te client didn’t think too much about

move sand through. Due to this research some new products were created that combined psyllium and probiotics in a pelleted form to be given in the feed. Te study looked at eight normal horses that had had no signs of sand colic within the previous year. “One thing we found was that even horses that we don’t consider to have a sand colic problem still have a certain amount of sand and debris in their gut,” said Landes. “Te other surprising thing was how well that product worked—how quickly it started to work and push the sand through the horses, and also how long it continued to work, over time. We’re not talking about heavy loads of sand. We’re talking about small amounts. But the amounts that were being pushed out were statistically signifcant.” Landes was also amazed at how long the product continued to work. Even after the horses were on it for a long time, the amount of sand pushed through the tract didn’t decrease much. “Te product didn’t lose its efcacy,” Landes said. “So we were fairly confdent that horses being on it for an extended period would continue to do well. Some people were theorizing earlier that maybe the bacteria in the hindgut would start digesting and converting the psyllium (breaking it down the way fbrous feeds are broken down) and it would lose its ability to collect the sand and push it through. But my study didn’t show that at all. “Tese products launched the idea of adding probiotics to the psyllium to get the gut healthy again. I like to have my clients keep their horses on those products if they live in an area where horses are prone to having sand issues. It doesn’t hurt to keep them on it year-round. “I have one client with a horse that had a prolonged sand problem; you could readily hear the sand moving around in the gut. Tis horse is now on the product year-round and is continuously passing the sand on through. “Whether a horse has a problem with sand is simply how much they consume compared with how much can be passed

sand being a problem until I listened to the gut.” DIAGNOSIS
“Horse owners can do their own testing for sand, checking the manure,” said Landes. “Tey can fll a 2- to 4-quart plastic container about two-thirds full of water and add about six fecal balls of manure to it. After stirring that around, the sand will settle to the bottom. Tey can pour of the water slurry, and any sand will remain in the bottom of the container. Tis is an easy way to check the manure. “One negative test (no sand in the bottom) does not prove that there is no sand present in that horse’s gut, however. Te owner would have to check several samples, over time. Tis would be a wise thing to do if the horse is in a sandy area and is being fed of the ground or out in a pasture. Tis past summer with the dry conditions here in the West, there wasn’t much pasture left and a lot of horses were grazing their pastures very short. “If the veterinarian is out for any reason, ask him/her to check your horses
72
(listening to the ventral abdomen with a stethoscope) to see if they can hear any sand moving in the colon. Tis is a good way of knowing whether the horse has ingested sand.”
Whether a horse has a problem with sand is simply how much they consume compared with how much can be passed on through.” — Dr. Allen Landes
Te veterinarian might also check a manure sample by putting a fecal ball in a rectal sleeve with some water and doing a swirl test. For this simple test, you pick up the fecal sample with a plastic rectal sleeve/glove, then turn the rectal sleeve inside out so it contains the sample, pour some water into the sleeve, and mix the water with the feces by shaking it up. When you let everything settle, the sand (being heavier than the manure)
CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ February 2018 ❙ www.ctba.com
will tend to gravitate into the fngers of the sleeve/glove. If you get the vegetable components of the fecal ball foating around in the water, this will allow the heavier sand to drop down into the fngertips. While that is an efective way to test for sand, all it tells you is that the horse has eaten sand and that it has made its way through the gastrointestinal tract with the manure. It doesn’t tell you how much sand the horse still has in the tract or whether he will colic or develop impaction. Te fecal test is a rough indicator, however, because if there is consistently a lot of sand in the feces, there is probably also a lot of sand in the colon. Te test can be negative in horses that are passing small amounts of sand, however. Te veterinarian might listen to the ventral abdomen with a stethoscope and hear the sand moving. It sounds like the rustling sound of the sea moving of a sandy beach. Whether the sand can be heard, however, might depend on where in the tract the sand is and the amount. Sand will also show up on radiographs because it is so dense.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through December 31, 2017.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
