A BRIGHT HORIZON FOR CALIFORNIA BREEDERS
I
n early October, Te Jockey Club released the most recent breeding statistics detailing the number of mares bred in 2017 and the estimated 2018 live foals from mares covered in the various states. According to TJC, approximately 90% of reports are complete. Among the 10 states and provinces listed, only three produced more live foals than the previous year (see chart below). Tis listing of live foals pertains strictly to the state of conception and does not represent the total number of foals born in a particular state. For California, the percentage of live foals produced by California-based stallions declined 8.6% in 2018 compared to 2017. Several other regional racing states (Florida and New York in particular) showed a signifcant-
ly higher decrease in foal production. Also, when factoring in the 300-plus California foals conceived in Kentucky and elsewhere, the current-year live foal crop should again approach 2,000. In regard to Kentucky-sired California-breds, 297 foals were reported for this year. Tis positive trend continues to increase each year and percentage-wise might be the highest in history. As California breeders continue to upgrade and bring better-bred bloodstock to the state, the quality of California-bred foals will rise. Tis bodes well for the future of racing and sales in the state. Te total Cal-bred program, at more than $35 million a year in restricted purses and incentive awards, has fueled this investment by California breeders. As California-breds continue to con-
stitute roughly half of the feld sizes north and south, and California racing becomes more and more dependent on locally bred horses, these stable trends are vital for the future of racing in the state as ample inventory should be available with a higher percentage of the horses being bred making it to the races. It is also important to note that unlike other states we are realizing these positive results even without revenue from other forms of gambling. Restricted purses and incentives continue to remain strong strictly through the pari-mutuel handle. Trough the continued cooperation within the industry to provide lucrative purses and incentive awards for breeders and owners, there should be more positives to report in the future.

reeding winners is a goal each mare owner can approach diferently. No matter what path a breeder prefers to take, Tom Clark and Clay Murdock want to provide the answer at Rancho San Miguel. “We’ve got a number of dedicated clients who leave their horses at the farm year-round,” said Clark. “Tey’re constantly looking for new stallions to breed to, and they’re looking for diferent types of stallions. We need to meet the demands of our client base.” Clark and his wife, Nancy, own Rancho San Miguel, having bought it in 2000. Murdock has managed the property for more than 30 years, frst for Dr. William Marano and then for the Clarks. Murdock, a team of dedicated employees, and the Clarks have worked hard to position Rancho San Miguel as a top Cali-

wide variety of stallions play key roles in the farm’s success. Murdock’s longtime association with Rancho San Miguel and the eforts of the employees, many of whom have been there for years, are more reasons many California breeders patronize the farm and its diverse stallion roster. Clark thinks so highly of Murdock that last year he nominated the manager for the prestigious Godolphin Toroughbred Industry Employee Awards. Tough the awards come out of Kentucky, Murdock was one of three fnalists in the Leadership Award—Farm category. “We have great employees and great leadership from Clay,” said Clark. “We also make sure that we have a resident veterinarian on staf so that we have good care close to the horses and can respond very quickly.”
Dr. Jim Meyers has taken over the resident veterinarian position relatively recently. He grew up in the area and did his undergraduate work at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He obtained his veterinary degree from the University of California at Davis. Rancho San Miguel consists of 250 acres in San Miguel, just north of Paso Robles. “We’re equidistant between the northern market and the southern market in California,” said Clark. “We’re about four hours from San Francisco and L.A., and we’re only about 20 miles from the ocean. So every evening we get a breeze that comes in and cools it of, which we think is very healthy for the horses.” Te Clarks and Murdock are in the middle of a renovation project that includes upgrading the employee housing, adding pens, upgrading existing barns,
and the construction of a new 16-stall barn, with plans on the drawing board for still another barn. When that work is completed, Murdock estimates that Rancho San Miguel will have about 85 stalls spread among nine barns. While Rancho San Miguel has a dedicated stallion barn, most of the other barns are multi-use to give the farm fexibility. When Marano owned Rancho San Miguel, it was primarily a training facility, but the Clarks and Murdock have now positioned it as a breeding facility. Services include all facets of breeding, foaling, and broodmare management, as well as sales preparation and the care of young horses until they are ready to go into serious training. Rancho San Miguel sits on a good aquifer, and the farm has fve wells and

lipe Stakes (G2) and San Carlos Stakes (G2) as well as the Lone Star Park Handicap (G3) in Texas. “We had a great response to Danzing Candy—we got a full book to him,” said Murdock. “He seems to be a stallion who could carry speed around two turns on dirt. We think his kind of race record should ft California very well.” Danzing Candy has plenty of black type in his female family as well. He is out of the Songandaprayer mare Talkin and Singing whose half brother Better Talk Now won the John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1T) in 2004 and fnished second in the race two years later. Clark and Murdock are proud of the fact that the Rancho San Miguel stallion roster ofers something for everyone. Pedigrees come from a variety of sire lines. Whether breeders are looking for a sprinter or a router, a dirt horse or turf specialist, they can fnd it in one of the Rancho San Miguel stallions. Te stallion roster has new prospects whose foals haven’t reached the races yet and proven commodities with several crops to race. Curlin to Mischief is one whose LIANNE MILTON

I think Richard’s Kid’s babies are going to get better with distance and age and time. He started 47 times and retired sound.” Rickey B is just a 2-year-old, and he has already won at Del Mar, Golden Gate Fields, and Fresno. Rousing Sermon’s frst crop of foals are yearlings. “Tey are very nice looking,” said Murdock. “Rousing Sermon made a little over $800,000, and he’s a very good-looking horse. I think people tend to forget how good a 2-year-old and 3-year-old he was.” A California-bred son of Lucky Pulpit—Rousing Again, by Awesome Again, multiple stakes winner Rousing Sermon was voted champion Cal-bred 2-year-old male of 2011. frst foals will race next year. “His pedigree really says it all,” said Murdock. “We’ve had good reception, and he’s got some nice-looking babies.” Unraced, Curlin to Mischief is by twotime Horse of the Year Curlin, who has proved an excellent sire with the likes of champion Stellar Wind. Curlin to Mischief is out of the Tricky Creek mare Leslie’s Lady, making him a half brother to multiple champion Beholder, current top sire Into Mischief, and Mendelssohn, winner of the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T), a graded winner in Dubai, and most recently third in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). Northern Causeway’s frst foals are 2-year-olds of 2018, and he comes from sire power both top and bottom. “He’s a son of Giant’s Causeway, and his dam is a half sister to City Zip and Ghostzapper,” said Murdock. “We’re just getting his babies rolling, and he even has a stronger second crop.” Northern Causeway is out of the winning Silver Deputy mare Getaway Girl. Te second dam, stakes winner Baby Zip, was named Kentucky Broodmare of the Year in 2005. Richard’s Kid earned $2,482,259 and won back-to-back Pacifc Classics in

freshman sire of 2015. “Slew’s Tiznow has really come on lately in the summer and fall,” said Murdock. “He’s had six or seven maiden special weight and allowance winners. Tey seem to be very versatile, able to run on diferent surfaces and can sprint and go two turns.” Four-time stakes winner Tom’s Tribute captured the 2014 Eddie Read Stakes (G1T). Te son of Lion Heart—Halloween Fun, by El Prado, earned $634,880. “Tom’s Tribute is a stallion we added last year,” said Murdock. “He’s a very good-looking son of Lion Heart. He’s got yearlings now, and they are very impressive. We got quite a few mares to him. He did all his running on the grass, but with Lion Heart there’s no reason they shouldn’t run on the dirt also.” Typhoon Slew is a graded stakes-placed half brother to Slew’s Tiznow and Slew’s Tizzy by Stormy Atlantic. Injury hampered his racing career, and he’s only been bred to a limited number of mares. His frst foals are 2-year-olds. “He was very precocious and broke his maiden by 103⁄4 lengths when he was a 2-year-old,” said Murdock. “What babies we’ve had have been very good-looking. He’s a very good-looking, big, strong horse.” Te pedigree goes back to an outstanding California-bred family that includes world-record setter Double Discount and California Broodmare of the Year General Store.
U S Ranger sires many winners and often ranks high on the list of leading California sires by winners, both general and 2-year-olds. He is by Danzig—My Annette, by Red Ransom, and has sired such stakes winners as Solitary Ranger, Lawn Ranger, and U S Ofcer. “He’s got good size for a Danzig and is very good-looking,” said Murdock. “He was undefeated as a 2-year-old in Europe.” Te farm supports the stallions, often with mares owned by the Clarks. Both Murdock and Tom Clark praised the owners of the stallions for supporting the horses as well. “I think that’s an important part of the strategy,” said Clark. “In California we really need the owner to be all in, supporting the stallion and giving him the best chance possible to be successful.” Te California-bred incentive program has helped Rancho San Miguel, its clients, and the stallions in those eforts. Murdock is giving back to the industry, having joined the board of directors of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association. He brings a valuable farm manager’s perspective to issues. “I think we’ve continued to build on our success over the years,” said Clark. “We’re able to attract high-quality stallions. In a market where the industry has probably shrunk by more than 50% when we started in the business—a very difcult environment—we’ve been able to sustain our growth and our market share and be successful.”

BY EMILY SHIELDS

At the Big Fresno Fair Oct. 6, Bold Fantasy added another feather in his cap: the $100,000 Harris Farms Stakes. Te tough dark bay gelding by Bertrando—Fantasy Rocks, by Rock Hard Ten, rallied to catch favored Fashionably Fast by a head. Te two runners fnished 93⁄4 lengths ahead of third-place runner Isa Firecracker, fnishing the six-furlong contest in 1:10.67. Jockey Irving Orozco was aboard for trainer Jonathan Wong, who has only been conditioning Bold Fantasy since claiming him for $25,000 June 24. “I thought the race on paper looked like it was going to set up good for us,” Wong said a few days after the victory. “Irving gave the horse a great ride.” Bold Fantasy was sent of as the third choice in a feld of six, with multiple graded stakes winner Masochistic second choice in his frst start since March. Masochistic, a Cal-bred son of Sought After, was initially retired before making his comeback; he fnished ffth after setting the early pace. Steve and Maria Pavich bred Bold Fantasy, having acquired his dam, Fantasy Rocks, for only $4,000 at the Barretts fall sale in 2010. Te mare was carrying Bold Fantasy at the time. Bold Fantasy was sold as a yearling for $25,000 to Curt and Lila Lanning at the 2012 Barretts October fall sale. Trainer Ed Moger Jr. selected him out of the sale and trained him throughout much of his career. Bold Fantasy debuted at Del Mar Aug. 7, 2013, later breaking his maiden at Santa Anita in his sixth start. He won allowance races each year from 2014 through 2016, then took most of 2017 of with injury. When he returned, Moger was also listed as his owner for just two starts before he lost the gelding to Wong.

Bold Fantasy’s new owners are Michael Nentwig and Nick and Ryan Cosato’s Slam Dunk Racing. “I’m very grateful and appreciative to his owners for believing in the horse and giving me the opportunity to train him,” Wong said. “Bold Fantasy is such a classy horse that really enjoys his job, and he is such a pleasure to be around. It was awesome; I’m still excited.” With the Harris Farms Stakes victory, Bold Fantasy boosted his earnings to $316,735. In addition to his seven wins in 37 starts, he has four seconds and eight thirds. Fantasy Rocks is still under Steve Pavich’s care in Wilton, Calif., outside of Elk Grove. She is unraced, but has also produced the stakes winner Fantasy of Luck, by Lucky Pulpit, and the winner Mariana Grace, by Papa Clem. All three of Fantasy Rocks’ runners have won. Te mare was barren to Curlin to Mischief for 2017. She produced a Flashback flly on May 25. Fantasy of Luck was not bred for 2019, but she will visit a Kentucky stallion early next year. Lori and Chuck Allen and Jef Bloom are also partners in Kentucky-bred multiple graded winner Midnight Bisou with Madaket Stables. Skye Diamonds is a multiple graded winner herself, adding the L.A. Fellow Cal-bred Show It N Moe It fnished third. “Tis is so satisfying,” said Lindo. “She tries so hard, and to be able to get her back in the winner’s circle is really incredible. Turning for home, I felt really confdent because she just wants to beat you. As an owner, that’s an indescribable feeling.” Pereira’s plan had been to let Yuvetsi and Anonymity take the lead. “But when I saw Show It N Moe It go too, I loved it because that was good for me too,” the jockey said. “I let them all go and was able to easily duck to the outside. By the three-eighths, she was pulling me, ready to go, so I let her.” Lindo praised Pereira’s ride, saying, “Tiago knows her so well, and today he let her get into a rhythm and then went after them.” Te partners nearly sold Skye Diamonds last year at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale, but they withdrew her. “We’ve got her entered in the Fasig-Tipton sale right after the Breeders’ Cup, so we’ll have to talk to everyone and see what we’re going to do,” said Lindo. Cal-bred Caretaker
EMILY SHIELDS
William Palma with one of his charges, Take the One O One
posted earnings of $1,288,825, and shared the Cal-bred Horse of the Year award for 2009 with 2009 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) winner Dancing in Silks. Palma has been working in Koriner’s barn for 10 productive, and at times very exciting, years. When you can count California Flag, Take the One O One, and Spiced Perfection among your charges, it gets that way. Taking care of a roster of fve horses each day is a routine followed by many grooms at the racetrack, and includes feeding, grooming, taking care of hooves, bandaging legs, and making sure bedding is clean and fresh. And, of course, it never hurts to give the horses plenty of tender, loving care. It’s the TLC, along with tending to all needs, that creates a family atmosphere between the groom and each of his charges. Tat was abundantly clear as Palma patted and petted Spiced Perfection while she nuzzled him during his interview at Del Mar. “I really like working with horses,” Palma said. “If you are with horses, they become like your family. My fve horses, I feel like they are my family. Tey know when I’m going to come in the morning, and they are ready. Tey know when I’m going to feed them. “And they like to play. I like that.” Te native of Guatemala came to the DELIVERS United States in 2004. He worked three years for trainer Jose DeLima and one for trainer Jim Cassidy prior to landing his grooming job with Koriner. Koriner doesn’t spare the praise when it comes to Palma. “He takes very good care of the horses, and they are very content with him; they’re very happy,” the trainer said. “Tey don’t have a lot of problems. In fact, he does such a good job with them, it’s like they’re not even here.” Just as Palma has made a life with horses, two brothers have done the same, also in California. Carlos Palma works for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, and Luis Palma works for trainer Mark Glatt. Te rest of the family live in Guatemala and includes two other brothers and two sisters. As to whether it’s easier to work with females or males, Palma said, “Tey’re all about the same. It depends on how you teach them and how you treat them. Tey are all very smart, and they learn very quickly. I teach them to be nice. If you are nice to them, they are nice to you.” Looking fondly at Spiced Perfection, he says, “Tis flly is very nice, nicer than Take the One O One. He likes to bite, and I have to stay alert when I’m around him.” Palma’s mantra for success: “Stand up for yourself, do a good job, and you will be rewarded.”

iving a life with horses has always been William Palma’s way of life, from childhood days in Guatemala to making his livelihood with them in Southern California. It’s a life that suits him, one that ofers him a chance to ply a trade he’s known for most of his life.
“I have been with horses since I was 8,” Palma said at the Brian Koriner barn during the summer season at Del Mar. “We lived on a farm in Guatemala, and naturally we had horses. We had our own horses over there.” Te 30-year-old is a key groom for Koriner. Palma handles California-bred stakes winners Take the One O One and Spiced Perfection, as well as three others each day. Take the One O One captured this year’s Snow Chief Stakes and Real Good Deal Stakes while Spiced Perfection won the 2018 Evening Jewel Stakes and 2017 Generous Portion Stakes. Te Cal-bred pair hasn’t brought him his greatest racetrack thrills, however. Tat rests with the exploits of California Flag, who won the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint in 2009 over Santa Anita’s unique downhill grass course and three times won the track’s Morvich Handicap (G3T). UPGRADING BLOODSTOCK DAVID CHASE RELIES ON A GOOD CROSS
D
Te frst time the Chase family attempted to bolster breeding in California was when they brought Richly Blended and Comic Strip from out of state, then added the young sire Capsized to their band. “We bred 450 mares to those three stallions,” Chase said. “We were successful then.” Teir BnD Chase Toroughbreds was based out of Newport Beach and had a run of success on the racetrack. Teir standout was Ultra Blend, a grade 1-winning California-bred millionaire who ultimately sold as a broodmare prospect for $700,000. But when David Chase’s personal life “took a spin,” he changed tack to working with Rancho de Los Aviadores in Annapolis, Calif. Nancy Probert owns the farm, which ofers boarding, sales-prep, and layup facilities. Chase brought his mares along and worked overtime washing windows to aford even more broodmares. “We weren’t doing so well when I frst got here, but that’s because we had the same old, same old,” said Chase. “We had to get all new mares and basically start over. Tere is a shortage of broodmares in California, so I can hardly take them from the pool that exists. I’ve been going out of state or getting them right of the track. We’ve really upgraded our band.” Chase hopes to update his bloodstock holdings even more with Anthony’s Cross, his latest stallion purchase. Anthony’s Cross is a son of the late, standout Cal-bred Indian Charlie out of the Unbridled mare Screening, who hails from a strong female family. Indian Charlie produced millionaire fllies Indian Blessing, Fleet Indian, and By the Moon, and he also sired Uncle Mo, the Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old male of 2010 who in turn sired Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Nyquist. Screening never raced, but her frst foal, Fugitive Angel, won the Pin Oak Valley View Stakes (G3T) at Keeneland. Anthony’s Cross was Screening’s second foal, and another, Well Acquaint-

COURETESY OF DAVID CHASE
David Chase knows much about the stallion game, having grown up with parents who had shares in studs such as Secretariat, Mr. Prospector, and Alydar. He also knows plenty about racing, having taken out his trainer’s license in 1984. David Chase is intent on improving the breed
ed, is stakes-placed in 2018. Screening’s dam, the Danzig mare Recording, was a graded stakes winner and is the dam of stakes winners Representing, Deal Making, and millionaire Smart Bid. “It’s a young, improving pedigree,” Chase said. “But I can’t sell him without people looking at him. He’s an incredible horse to look at.” Anthony’s Cross was a $300,000 yearling purchase by Arianne de Kwiatkowski. He broke his maiden in his fourth start going 11⁄16 miles at Churchill Downs before shipping to California for the winter. Tere he fnished third behind Tapizar in the $100,000 Sham Stakes (G3) before defeating that rival in the $250,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita. Tat victory by a nose over some of California’s best sophomores placed Anthony’s Cross on the Triple Crown trail, but he fnished ffth in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and was away from the races for 11 months afterward. He returned to place third in the $100,000 Berkeley Handicap (G3) at Golden Gate Fields before retiring with two wins in 11 starts and earnings of $230,790. Chase works closely with Rick Taylor of Special T Toroughbreds, where Anthony’s Cross stands. “I’ve had incredible luck with that man over the years,” Chase said. “I wasn’t going to get this stallion unless Rick supported the decision.” Anthony’s Cross has seven winners from 15 starters and is the sire of stakes-placed Yeehaw. “His numbers are incredibly good for such a small sample size,” Chase said. “Between his pedigree and physical, we’ve got people covered no matter what they want. We really believe we’ve got a good one here.”

fter more than a decade in the game, Steve Pavich has bred his frst stakes winner. Bold Fantasy took the $100,000 Harris Farms Stakes by a head at the Fresno fair Oct. 6, giving Pavich a moment he will always remember. “It was super exciting to see him fnally win a stake,” Pavich said. “He’s always been a good horse, but at age 7 he seems to be in really good form.” Te win was a long time coming for Pavich, who got his frst introduction to the
game as many do, tagging along with his father to the races and morning workouts. “My father, John, was an owner and breeder in Northern California back in the ’80s,” Pavich said. “I was the son who followed him around, catching the bug at 4 or 5 years old.” As he aged and went of to school, Pavich “fell out of it,” but he always knew he would return. “With my dad I saw how hard the game really is, and it doesn’t make common sense or fnancial sense, but we all do it anyway,” Pavich said. “I bought my frst mare in 2007.”

Health for thrush and other pathogens to grow. Frogs will have individual variations, depending on the conformation of the foot, according to Rucker. “A club foot will have a much diferent frog than a foot with a low heel,” she said. “With a club foot, the frog is generally recessed and won’t touch the ground. A general rule is that the frog should contact the ground, but there are many club-footed horses where the frog can’t touch the ground, except maybe at the apex (point of the frog). horses like Arabs are simply smaller horses. Health of the frog is mainly infuenced by how we take care of horses.” Steve Sermersheim is lead farrier for the University of Illinois and teaches veterinary students about hoof care. “Some people look at a prolapsed frog and think it is healthy just because it is big and fat,” Sermersheim said. “We see this in some older horses or laminitic horses that have a sunken cofn bone. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we see necrotic frogs—mainly dead tissue. In the spring we see many frogs that are necrotic and full of thrush.
Farriers debate whether the frog should be trimmed
“Te shape and balance of the frog should look like the dermal structure beneath it. Farriers often try to make it look like a pyramid instead, but the dermal structure is nicely rounded. “Te central sulcus of the frog needs to be checked—at least picked out with a hoof pick or scraped gently with the back of a hoof knife. Sometimes it looks healthy on the surface, but if you scrape it a little, you sometimes fnd bacterial pockets the frog has grown over. You don’t want to get too aggressive, but it needs to be checked. Otherwise you might think the frog is healthy, but the next time you trim the feet, that frog has a slit all the way back to the heel bulbs.” With the external surface sealed over, the central sulcus creates a perfect place 56
ing part of the foot.” Some horses are fat-footed and the frog always contacts the ground while others have a concave foot with more normal cup to the sole. Tose frogs will be diferent. “Te frog of a shod horse may also be a little diferent from the frog of a horse that has always gone barefoot,” said Rucker. “Research on feral horses (domestic horses gone wild on western rangelands) in the 1980s by Gene Ovnicek, a Montana farrier, showed that the frog plays a functional role for those horses. His research, along with that of (Kentuckian veterinarian and farrier) Dr. Ric Redden got people thinking about whether we really need to trim the frog very much when we shoe a horse.”

Bowker says the best way to take care of the frog is not to touch it. Farriers debate whether the frog should be trimmed. “Yet 120 years ago most veterinarians and farriers were on the same page, saying we should not touch the frog or sole, even if the horse had thrush,” said Bowker. “Trimming the frog is the worst thing we do to the frog; ‘neatening it’ just begins the slow process of deterioration.” Some people are more concerned about how the frog looks—trimmed and tidy—than how it needs to function. “When you see a narrow frog, it’s due to current trimming practices of the entire foot,” said Bowker. “Most of the feet I see, the frog is less efcient and not really helping the foot work properly. Tese are not good working frogs.” Sermersheim has another idea on the subject. “Many people say you should never trim the frog, but I have to disagree,” he said. “Te environment the horse is in makes a diference. Here in Illinois, it is wet nine or 10 months of the year, which can lead to thrush and other problems.” He added that trimming the frog is important to keep it cleaned up so there are no pockets where bacteria can proliferate. “We talk about balancing the hoof and medial/lateral balancing, but I don’t hear very many people talk about balancing the frog,” said Sermersheim. “When you have a balanced frog, however, I think it is healthier. You also need to make sure the commissures are clean. If those edges are not cleaned out, they collect muck, bacteria, sand, manure, etc. I don’t get overly aggressive with trimming, however. I like the frog big and healthy because it needs to bear weight.” “I trim the frog to remove loose edges, and trim it to mimic the shape of that horse’s dermal frog (the solid base it grows from),” said Burns. “It needs to be trimmed and maintained. You don’t get a nice healthy foot by leaving it alone, forgetting about it. For me the frog falls into that same category. Over time I am going to work on it and shape it so it’s a nice, healthy frog rather than just hoping

Sometimes we overtrim because we didn’t take time to evaluate it. We need to take a few seconds to examine the bottom of the foot before we touch The central sulcus of the frog needs to be kept clean anything, especially the frog.” Te frog may shed (exfoliate) once or twice a year. “You’ll see a natural separation beAs soon as you get the tween the old frog and new tissue underneath,” said Rucker. frog in active contact with You can trim of the old, loose dead the ground, it starts to material because it is coming of anyway. respond the way it is supIf you don’t take it of, it might trap mud and debris underneath and possibly creposed to.” ate problems with thrush. ic,” said Rucker. “A horse with thin, fat soles might not be able to handle being on pea gravel. I tailor any kind of frog or hoof therapy to the individual horses and their environment, and the season of the year.” Products exist that can be packed into the foot to soften frogs and soles in dry conditions, or can harden and toughen them in wet conditions. “On the racetrack, trainers used to use mud packs in the feet to soften them so they’d be more fexible—to handle concussion better—and less apt to crack,” said Rucker. “People apply hoof hardeners to try to toughen the sole and frog so they will be more durable and handle abrasion and weight-bearing. Tere are also products to treat or prevent thrush that you can brush or squirt into the deep sulcus of the frog and along its edges.” Sermersheim says that the remedy for thrush is proper trim and balance plus exercise. “We can use a lot of topical treatments to retard thrush, and they all work—as long as they are applied every day,” he said. “But regular exercise is even better. It creates more blood fow and also enables the foot to clean out when the horse is moving around.” Constant exercise is the natural condition for horses. Free-roaming horses are always moving, grazing, and traveling to water. Tey have healthier feet than horses standing in stalls or pens. Te hoof is an amazing structure. Bowker says a diseased or damaged frog will recover with proper care and husbandry. “Some farriers think that once a frog becomes small and narrow, that’s the end of it, but that’s not true,” he said. “Te frog continues to grow and is a living, dynamic structure. Even an unhealthy frog can recover, but it may take time, depending on the age of the horse and what he’s doing. Tissue inside the foot is designed to adapt and respond to whatever environment it lives in. If given the opportunity to adapt, it will.”

20 Grey Memo, 1997, by Memo (CHI)
The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through October 22, 2018.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
