SAN LUIS REY FIRE HEROES HONORED The many heroes of last year’s San Luis Rey fire were honored with the White Horse Award Nov. 1 at Churchill Downs. The Race Track Chaplaincy of America traditionally honors one individual or group with the award during Breeders’ Cup week, but this year it was decided to honor all of the fire heroes. “We had the most nominations we’ve had in a Mark Dunn while,” said Dan Waits, executive director of the RCA. “The majority of them centered around San Luis Rey and the fire. There was one submission that said, ‘Let’s not elevate one above another. Let’s give them all accolades and honor today.’ So that’s the one we went with.” Mark Dunn, the chaplain on duty at Santa Anita and Del Mar during the fire, spoke on behalf of San Luis Rey general manager Kevin Habell, who was unable to travel to Churchill for the award ceremony. “It was beyond what anyone could imagine,” Dunn said. “Instead of running away from the fire, they ran toward the fire to get the horses out. It was amazing.” Jockey Mike Smith was the keynote speaker at the White Horse Awards. Also honored were Ruidoso Downs and former jockey Pat Day. EVAN HAMMONDS

HISTORY

10 YEARS AGO TIVAN TAKES GOLDEN NUGGET California-bred Tivan captured the $64,675 Golden Nugget Stakes Nov. 10 at Golden Gate Fields. The 2-yearold colt sat off the pace before rallying to defeat pacesetter Tribal War Chant by three-quarters of a length in the final yards. Frank Alvarado rode Tivan for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. KMN Racing owns and bred Tivan, a son of Indian Evening—Zak’s

Precocious, by Precocity. Tivan is now two for two and has career earnings of $60,350. He completed the six furlongs in 1:09.94. Cal-bred Tribal War Chant, who went off as the 8-5 favorite, dueled on the lead with eventual fourth-place finisher The White Shadow and held off Cal-bred Midnight Special for third.

The Malibu Stakes (G1) has given many California-breds a chance to shine, including Bob Black Jack. On opening day of the 2008-09 Santa Anita meeting, Dec. 26, BOB BLACK JACK scored in the seven-furlong Malibu. Ridden by David Flores, he defeated favored Into Mischief by 21⁄4 lengths after leading nearly from the start. Fellow Cal-bred Georgie Boy finished third. Bob Black Jack covered the distance in 1:20.20. James Kasparoff trained Bob Black Jack for his brother, Tim, who owned the colt with Jeff Harmon. It was Bob Black Jack’s second start back since running unplaced in the previous year’s Kentucky Derby (G1). “When he came back, he was bigger,” said James Kasparoff. “He trained better; he worked better.” Gary and Marlene Howard and Bruce Dunmore bred Bob Black Jack, a son of Stormy Jack—Molly’s Prospector, by Native Prospector.

FRIENDLY BELLS became another California-bred to win stakes for John and Betty Mabee when she aced the Applebite Farm Stakes at Bay Meadows Dec. 1, 1993. The Mabees bred the 3-year-old daughter of Bel Bolide—Wonderful Friend, by Czaravich, and raced her in the name of their Golden Eagle Farm. Northern California superstar jockey Russell Baze guided Friendly Bells to her three-length victory in the six-furlong event against older distaffers. The filly was the 2-5 favorite and clocked the distance in 1:11.29. Her dam is a half sister to stakes winners Pretty Does and Groton High. Friendly Bells ultimately produced Canadian stakes-placed Test Drive and track record-setter Friendship Avenue.

50 YEARS AGO California-bred FOGGED IN won the San Mateo Stakes Dec. 7, 1968, at Bay Meadows. It was his fourth victory in a row and his first stakes win. All came at a mile and on fast, heavy, and good tracks. The 2-year-old son of Grounded II—Fog Horn Mary, by Son of Alpen, was well back for the first half-mile of the San Mateo, contested on a track labeled fast. Jockey Miguel Yanez took Fogged In outside on the far turn for racing room. The tactics worked, as Fogged In got up just in time to win by a neck in 1:352⁄5 over Lonny’s Secret, with Cal-bred Mr. Joe F. third. Noble Threewitt trained Fogged In for owner Poltex Stable. Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Jacinto bred Fogged In from their homebred Fog Horn Mary, a winner at 2.

Farm Vet

A VET’S LIFE MAKING THE ROUNDS WITH DR. ED HAMER BY EMILY SHIELDS

B

The equine surgeon divides his time between making rounds at local Thoroughbred farms in the Santa Ynez Valley and caring for hospitalized patients at Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center. Each day brings new cases, varying from run-of-the-mill pregnancy checks to emergency injuries or colics. A typical day begins at Alamo Pintado, an equine hospital tucked within the sleepy town of Los Olivos in the Santa Ynez Valley. It is a long way from Yerington, Nev., where Hamer was born, but he has been practicing 24

ecoming a veterinarian is a noble choice, bolstered by the promise that after years of schooling, one would quickly start helping animals in need. But it is far from a glamorous lifestyle, as Dr. Ed Hamer knows all too well. Dr. Ed Hamer checks out a patient on one of his farm visits

here for 30 years now. “I’ve seen ups and downs, and things seem to have plateaued,” he said, noting that the horse population has stabilized, although it is down from the days when the valley could boast 1,500 Arabian and Thoroughbred mares simultaneously. “The climate is terrific here; you always need a jacket in the morning.” After checking his schedule and fin-

ishing any loose ends from the night before, Hamer jumped in his truck to make rounds at the local farms. The first stop on an unusually quiet Tuesday was River Edge Farm, which formerly played host to some of the best stallions in the state. Owners Pam and Martin Wygod dispersed much of their stock, but some of their racing stock returns to the farm on layup. Hamer had previously removed

a splint from the leg of a valuable 4-year-old and opted to change the horse’s bandage himself. “I prefer to do things myself,” he said. “I don’t give a horse a shot unless I draw it up myself. If I draw it up, set it down, and walk away, I can’t give the shot. I do get teased a lot about it, but I was an only child and must be a control freak.” Hamer used to have a veterinary technician ride along, but no longer. “I am getting to the age where I should start thinking about traveling with someone,” he said. But it isn’t the veterinary work that requires an extra hand; it’s the paperwork. The sheer volume of information avail-

able on every horse–from X-rays and doctor’s notes–is all being digitalized, and having every file on hand is useful. Hamer next headed to Barton Thoroughbreds–the former Magali Farms. “Most of my days are more structured now than they were,” he said. “Back in the heyday, I would literally go to maybe only three farms a day. But now I go to at least six. It’s just the way things have changed as there are fewer big farms. I used to spend half a day at Magali, looking at 40-50 head of horses and palpating 60 mares. Now I change a bandage here, look at a few horses there.” But the work has changed, he explained, saying, “It’s more intense now for whatever reason. There’s more X-rays. You’re doing more with fewer horses.” After the economic crisis of 2008, veterinary work in general began to change. “Farms internalized their veterinary treatments,” Hamer said. “We’ve switched to more imaging and diagnostics, so we are working with fewer horses but they are higher treatment plans.” Where many farms would call a vet out simply to give a shot, many staff members are now trained to perform such tasks. After arriving at Barton Thoroughbreds, Hamer watched a colt for signs of the youngster’s being a wobbler–a term referring to a malformation that causes unsteady gaits. Then he examined an injury on the hinge of a hock that wouldn’t close because of its precarious location. Finally, he looked through X-rays on a computer with farm manager Kevin Dickson. The trust between Hamer and his clients was apparent when Dickson gave the veterinarian a list for the training and layup side of the farm and didn’t need to accompany Hamer. “I’ve been doing this long enough that you become a member of their team,” Hamer explained. “I have another rule of thumb: Always communicate with the manager first, rather www.ctba.com

than the owner. That’s what he’s there for; that’s what he’s supposed to do. “If a manager requests for me to talk to the owner, I’m more than happy to do that. Sometimes in an emergency situation, if it is dire, I’ll talk directly with the owner. But you never want to circumvent or go around the manager. You want to support them as much as you can.” One instrument commonly used during the day is the shockwave machine. “It sends energy into the bone by way of ultrasound,” Hamer explained. “It changes the ratio of cells in the bone in favor of bone builders rather than bone destroyers. It offers a fair bit of pain relief.” It is not uncommon for Hamer to receive an emergency call in the middle of his scheduled day, but he doesn’t mind the interruption. “The cool part about my job is that things are always different, every day,” he said. “Most of the time my day

changes by the afternoon. It’s very nice to have a day when you can fit in everything you planned on doing. But most of the time that doesn’t end up happening.” October is a busy time because every mare cataloged for auction needs to be palpated and official paperwork completed before she arrives on the sales grounds. Hamer specializes in reproduction and fertility, and he conversed cheerfully with Katie Fisher of Kingfisher Ranch while palpating her mares for the sale. “My schedule leaves me not rushed, so I can really talk to my clients and still get to the clinic in the afternoon,” Hamer said. After some debate about the merits of leaving it alone so close to the sale, Hamer treated a skin tag on a yearling’s eye with local anesthetic. He then traveled to Tommy Town Thoroughbreds to palpate more mares. “During breeding season I hit all the big farms every day,” he said. “Otherwise, I see them each two or three times a week.” The farms are on a regularly rotating schedule so that the farm managers know when to expect to see their veterinarian. Hamer has been around the Santa Ynez Valley long enough to remember a different kind of service, such as having to use “old school” two-way radios to confer with managers. “Before, if we wanted to take an X-ray, we had to drive back to the clinic, get the machine, come take the picture, then go back and develop it,” he said. “Then we would confer with the client. And if the picture didn’t come out correctly the first time? Everything took 10 times longer.” Toward the end of the ambulatory part of the day, Hamer had to make a call to a client to discuss a young horse’s racing potential, or lack thereof. “There’s not very many things that can sink a young horse’s battleship,

environment here is the best, in my opinion. We need a commitment from someone to move some serious stallions out here, but it can be done.” Hamer works Monday through Saturday, and he is on call for surgery ev-

ery three weeks. After finishing his farm visits for the day, he returned to the clinic to check on hospitalized patients. Alamo Pintado offers both a regular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

machine and a standing one, a hyperbaric chamber, an underwater treadmill, reproductive facilities, and various bone scan and endoscopy technology, as well as a surgery center. Much can be accomplished at the facility, more than could even be detected when Hamer first began as an intern at Alamo Pintado, fresh from receiving his doctorate in veterinary medicine at The Ohio State University. Before the day wraps up, he had one last task: performing a simple prepurchase exam on a horse that had been trailered into the clinic. The assignment is almost mundane–Hamer has done hundreds of these exams–but it is no less important than any other service provided. He flexed the horse’s legs, watched him jog, made a declaration about any underlying issues, and completed the afternoon where the day began: in his office, checking over his schedule.

per se,” he explained. “It is hard to tell someone that their horse is done before it begins, but that’s one nice thing about the Thoroughbred world. I find that Thoroughbred people, by and large, handle the truth better than most. And I’ve been doing this long enough and have such a knowledge base that I can be fairly definitive about things. People appreciate candor and honesty, as hard as it is to make those phone calls.” Many of Hamer’s patients have gone on to achieve great things. He recently worked with Paradise Woods, a dual grade 1 winner and earner of $773,890, before her return to the races in 2018. He believes that although there are obvious issues with breeding and racing in California, there is no better place to be. “I would much rather raise horses here than in Kentucky,” he said. “It’s magical what they’ve got there, but our

She gamely rose to the challenge to defeat Just Grazed Me by 21⁄4 lengths in 1:23.21, with S Y Sky in third. “Flavien rode her great, and she responded for him,” said Koriner. “A hole opened up for her coming for home, and once she poked her head through there, that was it.” Spiced Perfection was winning her third stakes, her first being the 2017 Generous Portion Stakes at Del Mar. She brought her record to five wins, four seconds, and two thirds in 13 starts for CTBA Director Don Valpredo presents Betty Grable trophy to Spiced earnings of $442,405. he live crowd that witnesses the Golden State Juvenile and Golden State Juvenile Fillies stakes varies widely each year. It all depends on whether California conducts the Breeders’ Cup, in which case the California-bred product gets an international stage. For 2018, however, the spotlight swung to Kentucky and Churchill Downs. The Golden State Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies, which had switched to Del Mar in 2017 for that Breeders’ Cup, returned to Santa Anita. Though fewer people might have seen the results, the winners demonstrated plenty of talent. CRUEL INTENTION’S GOLDEN STATE JUVENILE

But Baffert has a wealth of experience in his two main assistants, Jimmy Barnes and Mike Marlow, as well as plenty of top-level employees who keep the Santa Anita barn running smoothly whenever the boss needs to leave town. In 2012, HARLAN’S HOLIDAY ($3,632,664) set a new all-time juvenile earnings mark for North American sires at $2,954,556, eclipsing the previous record of $2,811,337 set by TAPIT. Since then, HARLAN’S HOLIDAY has established himself as not only a sire of great race horses, but as a sire of sires. With the emergence of North American leading sire, INTO MISCHIEF (Fee: $150,000), sire of GOLDENSCENTS ($20,000) North America’s second leading freshman sire in 2018, it’s quickly turning into one of the most exciting American sire lines, and BOAT TRIP is set to continue his sire’s success in the breeding shed. A Breeders Cup performer, BOAT TRIP sped 5f on the turf in 55.2, won stakes races at 6f in 108.2 and at 1 mile winning the TSUNAMI SLEW STAKES in 1:34:3. BOAT TRIP finished 2nd by a nose in the G3 EDDIE D STAKES, defeating multiple graded stakes winners CARACORTADO and MAJESTIC ClTY. acquired several good mares to breed to the stallion. One is the Pleasantly Perfect mare Perfect Feat, the dam of Cruel Intention. Premier bought her for a bargain $7,500 at the 2014 Barretts January mixed sale. Bred to Smiling Tiger, Perfect Feat has produced stakes winner Spiced Perfection, now 3, as well as Cruel Intention. Havens Bloodstock Agency consigned Cruel Intention to the 2018 Barretts April 2-year-old sale, where Alex Solis II of Solis/Litt Bloodstock purchased him for $200,000. “He’s an efficient mover and a big-striding horse,” said Solis at the time of the sale. Baffert trains Cruel Intention for the partnership of Jim Rome’s Jungle Racing, the Roth family’s LNJ Foxwoods, and Nexus Racing Club. Nexus is a group designed to bring young people, age 18-30, into horse ownership, and Cruel Intention gave Nexus its first stakes win. Cruel Intention debuted at Santa Anita Oct. 13 in a six-furlong Cal-bred maiden event. As the 1-5 favorite, he scored by 51⁄2 lengths under jockey Drayden Van Dyke. Evin Roman took over in the seven-furlong Golden State Juvenile because Van Dyke was at the Breeders’ Cup. Cruel Intention faced six rivals and went off as the 4-5 favorite. Galilean, an Uncle Mo Calbred who topped the Barretts April sale at $600,000 and won the Barretts Juvenile Stakes, was the second choice. Those two turned the race into a match once the field reached the turn. Galilean, with Rafael Bejarano aboard, had the lead, and Cruel Intention ranged up to challenge him. The pair tussled throughout the entire length of the stretch, with Cruel Intention edging Galilean by a neck at the wire in 1:22.82. They so dominated that it was 16 lengths back to third-place Luck’s Royal Flush. “When I asked him around the turn, he went right up with Bejarano’s horse,” said Roman. “I knew he was a good horse, and he’s very smart.” GIVE ME A HINT’S GOLDEN STATE JUVENILE FILLIES

Roman was scoring a Golden State double because the day before he had piloted Cal-bred Give Me a Hint to victory in the $200,345 Golden State Juvenile Fillies. He was the third jockey in three starts on the undefeated filly, who has also won for Kent 36

Desormeaux and Gary Stevens. Give Me a Hint likes to put daylight between herself and her foes. In her debut at Del Mar Aug. 12, she scored by 91⁄4 lengths. Trainer Robert Hess Jr. wheeled her back in a starter optional claiming race at Santa Anita Oct. 12, and she won by 61⁄2 lengths. Hess trains Give Me a Hint for Paul and Cathy Schroeder’s Schroeder Farms and Welton Mansfield. The trainer bred the 2-year-old daughter of Merit Man—Hint of Promise, by Beat Hollow, in partnership with the owners. “I trained the sire and this filly’s dam, so it makes it fun,” said Hess. “Mentally, she’s a cool filly—she does things right. We thought she’d run big today.” Earlier on the card, Hess saddled Schroeder Farms’ homebred All Tea All Shade, another 2-year-old filly by Merit Man, to win a starter optional claiming race. Neither filly went favored, with All Tea All Shade paying $29 and Give Me a Hint paying $13.20.

Mucho Unusual, who finished second in the Generous Portion Stakes in her first start before breaking her maiden by 81⁄4 lengths, went off as the 13-10 favorite in the seven-furlong Golden State Juvenile Fillies. Second-choice Creative Instinct set the early pace, with Mucho Unusual right alongside. Give Me a Hint bobbled at the start from the rail. Roman got her right back into the race and in good position around the turn. Roman swung Give Me a Hint outside at the top of the stretch, and the filly put on a huge burst of speed in deep stretch to win by 21⁄4 lengths. She stopped the timer in 1:26.45. Mucho Unusual finished second, a half-length ahead of longshot Hotitude. “We’ve got a wonderful stud, Merit Man, and I’m so high on him,” said Cathy Schroeder. Merit Man, a son of With Distinction, won three stakes and earned $462,030. He stands at BG Thoroughbred Farm in Hemet. “When you breed in California, it’s the best,” Cathy Shroeder said. “I think you can only get better and better as time goes on with this state’s breeding program. We’ve got some really great studs in this state, and people had better wake up to that fact. “We did this on Oct. 12 with this filly and our other one, All Tea and Shade. To be able to do this again with both horses is unbelievCo-owners, Cathy (third left) and Paul (fourth right) able.” Schoreder, enjoying Give Me a Hint’s victory

FINDING SOLUTIONS HELPING HORSES ONE RESEARCH PROJECT AT A TIME BY DEBBIE ARRINGTON

Understanding why and how horses get sick or stay healthy is part of the job at the Center for Equine Health. “I really want this to be the Mayo Clinic for horses,” said Dr. Carrie Finno, the center’s executive director. “If you want to know something, this is the place to go for the latest research.” Having specialized in equine genetics, Finno carries on a tradition of research coupled with practical, hands-on experience at the center, part of the comprehensive equine program at the University of California, Davis. Located 15 miles west of Sacramento, the campus is also home to the Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory and one of the nation’s best vet schools. Together they work closely with the state’s racing industry as well as the whole horse community. “We’re so lucky Dr. (Gregory) Ferraro built this place,” said Finno, referring to the center’s founder. Finno now holds the directorship endowed in Ferraro’s name. Established in 1973, CEH started by studying problems common to performance horses in hopes of finding ways to prevent catastrophic injuries, particularly in racing. Since then it’s grown into the major research arm of the university’s School of Veterinary Medicine. 40

“We find solutions,” Finno said. “That’s what I like about the job.” For Finno this is a dream opportunity, combining her love of horses with research. An active equestrian at 39, she continues to compete in eventing. She regularly rides her retired Thoroughbred gelding, 19-year-old Kaiden (now semi-retired again), and 6-year-old warmblood mix mare Carte Blanche. “I grew up on Long Island and real-

When I turned 10, I was so ready, but he said, ‘Sorry, honey, but they updated the law. The minimum age now is 11.’ But I called his bluff and got lessons. My dad is ok with (her love of horses); he says at least I made a career of it. “My dad now says I have the perfect job,” Finno added. “Dad says I always

What they give to us is absolutely amazing.” On Facebook, the center shares horse stories, featuring a Horse of the Month with profiles of the equines’ unique personalities as well as how many students they helped. “We plan to make a calendar (for 2019) featuring these horses,” Finno said, “to let people know how important these horses are to us. They’re really helping other horses by living out here.” Some of the donated horses have issues that have ended their careers. “We use them to teach students what diseases or certain conditions look like,” said Finno. “They’re making a huge contribution. Finno and Katzman met in Minnesota, where Finno attended vet school at the University of Minnesota. She later returned to that university for post-doctorate work in comparative genetics. She joined the U.C. Davis staff in 2014. Besides her CEH work and research, she teaches population health and reproduction. Following her CEH appointment in July 2017, Finno is still relatively early in her five-year term as the center’s executive. Before she was offered the directorship, she served one year as interim director. Finno has a long relationship with U.C. Davis and California racing. While completing her Ph.D. in comparative pathology at the university, she was awarded the Louis R. which has been traced to vitamin E deficiency. Foals that have a genetic susceptibility to eNAD need more vitamin E in their diet to avoid developing the disease. So do pregnant mares that carry that gene; otherwise, their foals might be at higher risk.

COURTESY OF DR. CARRIE FINNO

According to the CEH, Dahlgren has been working with Finno and Dr. Fern Tablin in the U.C. Davis Integrative Genetics and Genomics Graduate group to “analyze the underlying genetic basis of Atypical Equine Thrombasthenia.” AET affects one in every 150 Thoroughbreds and causes epistaxis (such as nosebleeds) and prolonged bleeding from injury. “The potential role for this disorder in Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage, a devastating disease of Thoroughbred racehorses, could drastically alter the way the Thoroughbred racing industry prevents and treats this important disease,” said the center’s announcement. Added Finno, “So far, she’s found some really interesting results.” Genetic testing might reveal clues to vulnerabilities. Having a certain gene doesn’t mean something will definitely happen. “It (shows) the susceptibility for that disease,” Finno explained. “With the right risk factors—high-stress exercise, diet, etc.—it could happen. The important thing with any find is how to interpret those tests and results. (The message) is not to get rid of the animals who may have this susceptibility, but how to manage them with genetics.” The Rowan Fellowship helped set Finno on what has become her own decade-long quest. “I’m still working on the same topic I was during my fellowship,” Finno said. That’s the relationship between genetics, vitamin E, and equine neuroaxonal dystrophy (eNAD). “It looks like wobbler (syndrome, or cervical vertebral myelopathy, a condition that affects the spine and gait),” Finno said. “Horses develop incoordination. They’re fine as foals, but in their second or third year of life, they become clumsy and uncoordinated. But once you realize it, you can’t change anything. It’s too late. “You can’t breed them; you can’t use them as broodmares. Owners are left financially and emotionally devastated. It’s terrible. But you can prevent it.” All breeds can be affected by eNAD,

Finno’s husband Dr. Scott Katzman, an equine surgeon, and Twitch

“Horses usually get vitamin E from pastures, eating grass,” Finno said. “In Kentucky, you don’t see (eNAD) as much because horses grew up in pastures. In California, horses often grow up in dry pastures with hay and grain, and we see more (eNAD). Think about how performance horses are housed.

At the end of the day, we’re here to help the horse. That’s what it’s all about.” — Dr. Carrie Finno

“You can have a whole herd of horses that are vitamin E deficient, but only a few show the disease.” That’s because of genetics. Not all horses have eNAD susceptibility. Part of understanding the link between vitamin E and eNAD is how horses metabolize that fat-soluble vitamin. “Horses have a very, very low cholesterol diet,” Finno said. “About the

❙ December 2018 ❙ www.ctba.com

only fat they get is from (mare’s) milk as foals.” Cut grass doesn’t work as a pasture substitute. “When cut, grass oxidizes its vitamin E immediately,” Finno said. “Horses that have the susceptibility need vitamin E supplements every day for their first three years. So do mares who carry that susceptibility. With some large-scale operations, it makes more sense to irrigate pasture.” The center continues research on several other aspects of horse health, including: • Dr. Sue Stover’s continued work on the relationship to shoes and injury. Director of the J.D. Wheat Veterinary Orthopedic Research Laboratory, Stover has been instrumental in identifying risk factors that can lead to major injury or breakdown. Her current work indicates that setting the shoe back and squaring the toe can take stress off the foot, Finno said. • How long does rabies vaccine last in horses? This could lead to a multi-year shot. • Why do horses metabolize some drugs faster than others? The center works with Dr. Heather Knych of the Maddy Lab to study metabolization rates. That research helps set standards for racing regulations. • Development of a vaccine for pigeon fever, led by Dr. Sharon Spier. Neither related to birds nor elevated temperatures, this bacterial infection causes abscesses that swell a horse’s chest like a top-heavy pigeon and eventually spread to internal organs. • Elevated liver enzymes in Thoroughbreds that might be exercise related. A collaborative project is under way with trainers and veterinarians in Southern California. • Bringing PET (positron emission tomography) scanning to racetracks. This sensitive image testing can detect hot spots in legs before radiographs, preventing potential catastrophic injury. “At the end of the day, we’re here to help the horse,” Finno said. “That’s what we’re all about.”

COURTESY OF BONNIE ACRES RANCH

BY EMILY SHIELDS

Bonnie Acres Ranch in Hemet is a layup facility offering 24-hour security and veterinary services, a water treadmill, and exemplary care. The farm is all the better because of Jose “Pedro” Gonzalez, who has been working for ranch owners Bob and Carol Mitchell for 25 years.

Pedro Gonzalez, a steady hand at the Bonnie Acres helm

“He is invaluable; there’s no one like him,” Bob Mitchell said. “In addition to caring for the horses, he can do absolutely anything, including anything involving electrical.” Gonzalez hails from Jalisco, Mexico, and praised Mitchell for helping him through the paperwork that resulted in his green card. “Bob is a good man—actually, a great man,” said Gonzalez. “He helped me do everything correctly when I wanted to come here. So now I want to do everything I can for him and the ranch.” Gonzalez’ responsibilities include the regular care that comes with maintaining a layup facility of 75-80 horses, as well as some veterinary work on the side. “I doctor the horses,” he said. “I fix things. If there’s something that I can’t do, I try to do it anyway. No one thing is really my favorite; I just want to work on something. It doesn’t matter what it is.” Mitchell hired Gonzalez as a temporary employee when another worker was on a two-week vacation. “Then I worked on and off before Bob hired me permanently after that,” Gonzalez recalled. Mitchell has been most impressed with Gonzalez’ desire to learn. Although Gonzalez’ English is stellar, he still doesn’t know every term.

“He carries around something with him all the time so that he can look up a word I’ve said that he doesn’t understand,” Mitchell said. “That’s how badly he wants to learn.” Facetiously, Mitchell added, “And if he was ever five minutes late to work, it might just kill him. That’s the kind of person he is.” In addition to his love for horses, learning, and the ranch, Gonzalez is proud of his family and inspirational young son. “The best part of my life is my wife and my kids,” he said. “My older kids are working now, but I have a special son with autism. He is very smart, really awesome. Being autistic doesn’t matter; he’s just very special. That’s all I can say.” “Pedro’s wife is a doll,” Mitchell agreed, noting the Gonzalez family lives on the property. “They’re just such nice people. I can’t say enough good things about them. He’s unusual in how good he is at taking on work; he can do as much as all my other employees put together.” For a farm that plays host to some of California’s top stakes horses when they undergo rest and rehabilitation, trust and quality of care are paramount. Mitchell believes that having a hand such as that of Pedro Gonzalez is what sets the farm apart. “Pedro is as good a person as you’ve ever met in your life,” said Mitchell. “He is really something.”

Medial meniscal injuries are fairly common in the medial joint. The injury is usually a tearing DIAGNOSIS If the horse is lame and the stifle seems to be the area of of the fibrous tissue at the top of the tibia. The meniscus is attached to the tibia by several ligaments, so frequently some of those ligaments are also injured when the meniscus is injured, especially the medial collateral ligament that keeps the stifle aligned. Additionally, any of the other ligaments that hold the meniscus in place can be disrupted. The seriousness of the injury is generally related to how badly damaged the meniscus is. A tearing of the meniscus can cause severe lameness and a lot of swelling in the stifle. By contrast, a little fraying of the meniscus might not cause much Femur problem at all, and the horse might not be lame. Sometimes a meniscus injury is due to a onetime traumatic Patella event, such as severe stress/strain on the joint. But often it can be the result of cumulative damage over time, until the horse Fibula becomes obviously lame. “Acute injury, as when the horse hangs the leg up, stumbles, Stifle joint Tibia or falls, or does something causing acute trauma, can abruptly tear the meniscus,” said McClure. “Another way the meniscus can be injured is if the stifle has a subchondral bone cyst or some other problems in the joint that cause arthritis and inflammation. The meniscus can then slowly be degraded by Hind Leg inflammatory mediators until it becomes weakened. concern, it is important to know which part of the joint is affected. Most horses with a stifle problem show some swelling of the joint. A horse might have some extra fluid in the stifles and might not be lame, but that might indicate that something is wrong in the joint. Athletic activity might cause some pain and discomfort, so the horse won’t perform as well or run its fastest or might resist doing a certain movement because it hurts. CHANCES FOR RECOVERY

Prognosis will depend on the extent of the injury. “We find some injuries on ultrasound where the meniscus may have just a little bit of tear and edema, and those can have a better prognosis,” said McClure.” The horse may heal enough to return to work. “When we see an injury where the meniscus is extruded (torn and pushed out the side), this generally has a very poor prognosis for returning to soundness. There are many factors that play a role in prognosis, such as how much injury there is to the medial collateral ligament, how much injury there is to the meniscus, the athletic activities of the horse, etc.” If it’s just a meniscus injury and nothing else in the stifle is injured, it might have a better prognosis. “Generally, there are also some other ligaments damaged and some cartilaginous injuries, etc.,” said McClure. “These play as much into the prognosis as anything.” The horse might heal enough to be pasture or breeding sound but might not heal enough to return to a high level of work in an athletic career. “Athletic horses will be more of a challenge to get them completely sound for what they have to do or keep them sound,” McClure said. “There is always risk for reinjury with what we are asking them to do.” Most of these injuries will take a fair amount of time for healing. “The time it takes will also depend on severity of the injury, the age of the horse, the treatment protocol, etc.,” said McClure. It’s always a case-by-case situation with veterinary guidance, but most of these horses will be needing six months to a year of time off from work. Stifle injuries involving the meniscus always entail a longterm program for recovery. 60

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED

STEM CELL THERAPY FOR MENISCUS INJURIES The most common applications for stem cells are in treating ligament and tendon injuries. “Meniscal injuries in the stifle joint are an area where we often tend to use stem cells,” said Dr. Scott McClure. “There have definitely been some positive outcomes associated with stem cells in meniscal injuries. This comes back to case selection, however. Some of these injuries will respond better than others. You need to have a stable joint for good results. If there is meniscal injury and additional ligamentous injuries, stem cells are not going to solve that entire problem.” There has been a lot of discussion regarding the best source of stem cells. “Some people use the bone marrow-cultured stem cells, and others use the adipose stem cells,” said McClure. “There are other things on the market that pop up from time to time that people are calling stem cells, but there are actually very few to no stem cells in some of these products. I think people need to discuss these things with a veterinarian who understands the differences before using them. “The ways we can use a large number of stem cells are to utilize either the harvested bone marrow (and cultured cells), which is sent to a lab to culture and produce a high number of stem cells, or the adipose stem cells that are processed on the spot, to get a large number of stem cells out of the fat. “Those cells from fat have the advantage that you can do this on site. You can liposuction the fat from the horse, process the fat, and reinject those cells. You don’t have to wait for culturing. There are 500 to 1,000 times the number of stem cells in adipose than there are in the bone marrow.” Some other therapies exist, such as bone-marrow concentrate that have some stem cells and growth factors, but have relatively few

stem cells. This extract contains a mix of things that might be helpful, but the actual number of stem cells is very low. “There are also therapies such as amnion that have benefit, but are not actually true stem-cell therapy,” said McClure. “It is important to be working with a veterinarian who understands the differences and has experience with these.”

* foreign purse earnings The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through November 12, 2018.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
