CALIFORNIA CUP TURNS 29

T

he California Toroughbred Breeders Association is happy to announce that the 29th running of the California Cup will be held at Santa Anita Park in conjunction with the Sunshine Millions on Saturday, Jan. 26. Now in its sixth year since the two events were merged and run early in the year instead of the fall, this year’s edition will again showcase the top California-bred and California-sired horses, with full felds, large restricted purses, and very competitive racing. Many great California and national champions have competed in Cal Cup in its nearly three-decade history. Resembling last year’s changes, the

stakes and overnight restricted races on the card have been adjusted in order to ofer more lucrative opportunities for diferent classes of horses. Tis should encourage increased participation of the horsemen. Total purses will once more approach $1 million with a 10-race card. Te stakes races for the day include the $200,000 Unusual Heat California Cup Turf Classic Presented by City National Bank, the $150,000 California Cup Sprint, the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint, and the second running of the $100,000 California Cup Turf Sprint for 3-year-olds. Te overnight restricted races under

consideration are maiden allowance, non-winners of one allowance, and maiden claiming races, all with large purses and strictly for Cal-bred/Cal-sired horses. Two other historic California Cup stakes, the Derby and the Oaks, have been moved back a few weeks on the calendar to provide better spacing between the 2and now 3-year-old stakes that have been ofered since last summer. Tese stakes, both with purses of $200,000, will be run on Presidents’ Day, Feb. 18. We thank our decade-long sponsor, City National Bank, and our partner, Santa Anita Park, for all of their support honoring the Cal-bred industry. Good luck to all the connections!

Cal-bred flly Make Happy earns points for 2019 Kentucky Derby in Japan

CAL-BRED WINS IN JAPAN Make Happy, a California-bred daughter of Square Eddie, won the Cattleya Sho Nov. 24 at Tokyo Racecourse by 21⁄2 lengths. Christophe Lemaire, Japan’s leading rider, piloted Make Happy for owner Shadai Farm and trainer Koichi Shinkai. Te Cattleya Sho awards 10 points for consideration in the 2019 Kentucky Derby (G1), and Churchill Downs makes one Derby berth available to the leading point earner in Japan. Teruya Yoshida of Shadai Farms said that Make Happy would probably not compete in the Derby, though he didn’t rule out the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1). Reddam Racing bred Make Happy from the Ten Most Wanted mare Silar Rules. Wavertree Stables sold the flly to Shadai Farm at the Fasig-Tipton Florida select sale of 2-year-olds last March for $650,000. Make Happy is a full sister to grade 1 winner Ralis and multiple stakes winner and graded stakes-placed B Squared.

CALIFORNIA LOSES FOUR GRADE 1 STAKES Four California stakes races have lost their grade 1 status, the Graded Stakes Committee downgrading them to grade 2 races for 2019. The Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity for 2-year-olds, the Santa Margarita Stakes and Zenyatta Stakes for older females, and the Triple Bend Stakes for older sprinters will now become grade 2 stakes. No California stakes were upgraded to grade 1 races for 2019 though several did receive grading elevations. The Eddie D. Stakes for older turf sprinters went from grade 3 to 2. Four listed stakes were elevated to grade 3—the Sweet Life Stakes for 3-year-old turf fllies, the Astra Stakes for older turf females, and the Green Flash Stakes and Joe Hernandez Stakes for older turf sprinters. California stakes demoted from grade 2 to grade 3 were the Honeymoon Stakes for 3-year-old turf fllies, the Bayakoa Stakes and La Canada Stakes for older females, and the Santa Ana Stakes for older turf females.

Memoriam

Michael Pageler, breeder and co-owner of California-bred stakes winner Heck Yeah, died Nov. 9 in Fort McDowell, Ariz. He was 63. Heck Yeah, a 2015 son of Acclamation— Lutess, by Maria’s Mon, won the 2018 California Cup Turf Sprint Stakes, California Cup Derby, and Echo Eddie Stakes. He raced for Pageler, Bob Baedeker, and Michael Sigband. Pageler loved nothing better than traveling from Arizona to California to see his homebred compete. “This never gets old, I can tell you that,” Pageler said after one of Heck Yeah’s victories. Pageler became a partner in Lutess as a racehorse and later began breeding her. Bob Baffert claimed and trained Lutess for the partnership, and Baedeker later convinced Baffert to train Heck Yeah. Pageler was thrilled to have a horse with the Hall of Fame conditioner. The breeder was just beginning to enjoy the fruits of ownership. He was featured as the member profle in this magazine last June, during which he discussed Lutess’ 2016 Coil gelding, Inconceivable, and said that the mare had been bred to Eclipse Award winner Arrogate, a Baffert trainee. Pageler is survived by his wife, Connie, and their sons Michael, Nathan, and Jake.

HISTORY

JOHNNY EVES won the third graded stakes of his career Jan. 25, 2009, when he captured the $150,000 Palos Verdes Handicap (G2) as a 5-year-old. The California-bred gelding had earlier won the 2007 Malibu Stakes (G1) and 2008 Vernon O. Underwood Stakes (G3). In the six-furlong Palos Verdes, Johnny Eves took the lead almost immediately under jockey Garrett Gomez, continually lengthening that advantage until he defeated favored Devoted Magic by 13⁄4 lengths in 1:08.56. Carl and Sharon Hilliard bred and raced Johnny Eves in the name of Mooncoin. A son of Skimming—Capote’s Halo, by Capote, Johnny Eves was named for Sharon’s late father.

SOUTHERN TRUCE was an excellent claim for $16,000, the amount trainer Roger Stein got her for on behalf of Peggy Johnson’s Regal Rose Stable in 1991. Named champion California-bred champion older female of 1993, Southern Truce went on to capture the $150,000 Santa Monica Handicap (G1) at Santa Anita Jan. 17, 1994. Ridden by Gary Stevens, Southern Truce raced in sixth early in the seven-furlong Santa Monica. She got up in time to defeat Arches of Gold by a half-length in 1:21.44, with Mamselle Bebette third. Van and Marilyn Rose bred Southern Truce, a daughter of Truce Maker—Chief’s Beauty, by Chieftain. Johnson subsequently sold Southern Truce privately for six fgures to Robert and Janice McNair’s Rose Hill Stable. Southern Truce won 19 of 50 starts for earnings of $867,578.

50 YEARS AGO FOURTH BASE was not the greatest California-bred racehorse, though he managed to win a few races. What made him special was that Gov. Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, bred the gelding. During January 1969, Fourth Base won twice at Santa Anita. Racing for Flag Is Up Farms, Fourth Base frst captured a $10,000 claiming race Jan. 14 by a nose. Eight days later he won again, this time for $12,500 and by a half-length. Donald Pierce rode Fourth Base for trainer Bob Wheeler. Both races were conducted over 61⁄2 furlongs, the frst on a slow track in 1:192⁄5 and the second on a muddy track in 1:193⁄5. Fourth Base was a 3-year-old son of Dodger Blue—Northam, by Mirza II. Reagan served as California’s governor from 1967-75 and as the U.S. president from 1981-89.

MIRAHMADI NAMED SANTA ANITA ANNOUNCER California native Frank Mirahmadi, who regularly emcees the California Toroughbred Breeders Association annual awards dinner, has been named as Santa Anita’s announcer, replacing Michael Wrona. Most recently the regular announcer at Monmouth Park, Mirahmadi has called at numerous California racetracks, including several fair meetings and Golden Gate Frank Mirahmadi Fields. Over the last 22 years, he has also announced at such tracks as Aqueduct, Hialeah, Oaklawn Park, and Louisiana Downs. Mirahmadi has his own distinctive style, but he has also entertained racegoers with his impersonations of such industry icons as announcer Trevor Denman and trainer D. Wayne Lukas. He brings those along with him when he emcees the CTBA awards dinner, and he does such a good job that he has been asked back several times. He is slated to do so again at the 2019 dinner Feb. 25 at the Sheraton in San Gabriel. Te Santa Anita job has long been Mirahmadi’s dream, the track being “my favorite racetrack since I started attending horse races as a kid in the ’70s,” he said.

HARRIS, OLD ENGLISH COMBINING FORCES

F

In late 2018 Harris and Old English announced that they will join forces to keep California racing and breeding strong. Stallions from the two farms will now all be located at the Harris Farms facility in Coalinga and include Acclamation, Clubhouse Ride, Desert Code, Jeranimo, Lakerville, Majestic Harbor, Mr. Big, Prospect Park, Smiling Tiger, Tamarando, and Vronsky. Together, both farms use more than 700 irrigated acres or irrigated pasture for boarding of broodmares, John Harris of Harris Farms’ with its star graduate California Chrome stallions, and developing yearlings. Jonny Hilvers, the general manager of Old English Rancho for eight years, will become general manager of the newly combined entity. Hilvers, 33, is a native of Sanger, where Old English is located. He is the grandson of the late Buddy Johnston. Hilvers’ great-grandfather Elwood “Te Pie Man” Johnston founded Old English. John Harris, a 1965 graduate of the University of California at Davis, has been a farmer, cattleman, beef processor, restaurateur, and enthusiastic owner and breeder of Toroughbreds for more than 50 years. He has been a member of Te Jockey Club since 1984, still serves on the California Toroughbred Breeders Association board, and is a former CTBA chairman. Congratulations to John Sadler Te California Toroughbred Foundation salutes its trustee John Sadler on the incredible year he had as a trainer in 2018. Always among the leaders in California, Sadler sent out Hronis Racing’s Accelerate for a nearly perfect season, which culminated in the horse’s victory in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs Nov. 3. Accelerate began the year by winning the San Pasqual Stakes (G2) and Santa Anita Handicap (G1). He sufered his only 2018 defeat in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) in Arkansas, losing by just a neck to the talented City of Light, who later won the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1). Trainer John Sadler crafted Accelerate subsequently collected trophies in the Gold a stellar 2018 campaign Cup at Santa Anita (G1), TVG Pacifc Classic (G1), and Awesome Again (G1) stakes before the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Sadler’s frst victory in a Breeders’ Cup race. HALL OF FAME Class of 2019 John Barr and Crystal Water will be inducted into the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Hall of Fame Feb. 25 at the Sheraton San Gabriel, part of the CTBA’s annual Awards Dinner. JOHN BARR lifetime of service to the Toroughbred industry has landed longtime California breeder John Barr in the Hall of Fame, joining the class of 2019. Barr has made an impact both locally and nationally, thanks to the horses he campaigned under his Oakcrest Stable banner and to his work with Te Jockey Club safety committee. Barr was once in the oil business, then in real estate, before focusing more of his attention to racing. He bred and raced California-bred Bert’s Melody, a stakes-winning daughter of Bertrando— Unchanged Melody, by Tale of the Cat. She earned $233,273 and won the Fran’s Valentine Stakes at Santa Anita in 2016. She was bred to Stanford to foal during the upcoming season. Other classy horses raced by Oakcrest include Del Mar stakes winner Waingarth, a Cal-bred by Slewpy—Beverly Z., by Zamboni. Waingarth earned $251,788. Te gelding’s stakes-winning dam was also a homebred for Barr, taking the Admirably Stakes at Golden Gate in 1993. Bob’s Lady, by Pirate’s Bounty, was a stakes winner at Fairplex Park and Golden Gate while another Pirate’s Bounty mare, Bountiful Dreamer, won the California Cup Distaf Handicap at Santa Anita in 1998. Bountiful Dreamer won four of 27 starts and fnished in the top three placings 13 times for earnings of $274,535. Oakcrest Stable once had 60 horses on Los Amigos Toroughbred Farm in Temecula. Oakcrest horses have earned $2,117,555 through 581 starts and 71 wins. California Clone and other winners Lily Be Good and Desert General—the latter two out of Barr’s winning homebred Madam General—topped his 2018 racing season. Barr is a former president and current board member of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association and has several times served as the CTBA treasurer as well. He served as president not long after current president Doug Burge frst started with the CTBA, which Barr remembers well. primarily with Oak Tree’s foundation, which contributes fnances to equine-related programs. Formerly a board member for the Breeders’ Cup Ltd., Barr also currently serves as treasurer for the Richard Nixon Foundation. But perhaps his proudest contribution nationwide would be with work on safety issues of the industry. “I have been a member of Te Jockey Club for 15 years,” Barr said. “I presently serve on the safety committee of Te Jockey Club and have been on that committee for a number of years, where we believe we have been responsible for a signifcant number of changes in the industry for better drug controls, safety conditions for

jockeys and horses alike, as well as any number of other followed recommendations for overall safety conditions in the industry.” Te committee was formed in 2008, just days after the death of flly Eight Belles following her second-place efort in the Kentucky Derby. It has made a lasting impact since. me” when the jockey hit him with the whip in the Santa Anita Handicap. So Pincay hand-rode him to the wire, with Crystal Water edging a game Faliraki and setting a track record of 1:591⁄5 for 11⁄4 miles. Crystal Water added the Californian Stakes (G1) at Hollywood while carrying 128 pounds. Ten he had to pick up a pound in the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) against a feld that would be considered Breeders’ Cup material today. Eclipse Award-winning female Cascapedia, the excellent Calbred Ancient Title, multiple graded winner Caucasus, and 1976 Gold Cup winner Pay the Tribute were among Crystal Water’s Gold Cup rivals. Pincay had resolved not to hit Crystal Water in the race, a tactic he had to reconsider during the running. “All of a sudden I could see a horse on the outside of me, a flly called Cascapedia, and she was going to go by me,” Pincay recalled. Crystal Water was giving 13 pounds to Cascapedia, who had dead aim on him. Caucasus had fought of trafc trouble and also loomed as a serious threat. Pincay decided to use his whip, and he and Crystal Water turned back Cascapedia by a neck and Caucasus, who was a nose back in third. Crystal Water became the frst horse ever to win the Santa Anita Handicap, Californian, and Gold Cup in the same year. He added that year’s Oak Tree Invitational (G1T) on the turf against Vigors and Ancient Title, the year before Vigors became a late-running phenomenon. As good as Crystal Water was on dirt, Clapp felt he was better on the turf, once saying that the colt “could beat any horse that ever lived on the grass.” —Tracy Gantz

When trainer Roger Clapp frst saw Crystal Water, he thought the horse wouldn’t make it to the races, let alone become one of the greatest California-breds ever. “He was blocky and he was strong,” Clapp said in 1982. “Crystal Water’s ankles were almost mushy from carrying weight in the paddock while growing up.” Crystal Water overcame those mushy ankles, and he died in 2004 at the advanced age of 31. He outlived his owner/breeder, Connie Ring, the grand dame of Tree Rings Ranch who died in 1990. And he left a legacy of some amazing races and earnings of $845,072, an amount amassed in the 1970s, before the era of million-dollar paydays. Clapp raced Crystal Water sparingly at 2, and at 3 in 1976 the colt showed some of the brilliance he would put on full display as an older runner. Crystal Water captured the 1976 San Felipe Handicap (G2) and Hollywood Derby (G1), and earned his frst of two Cal-bred Horse of the Year titles. Crystal Water developed into a stellar 4-year-old in 1977. He tied a world-record mark of 1:452⁄5 for 11⁄8 miles in an allowance race because jockey Laft Pincay Jr. had to keep Crystal Water away from a horse that had lost his rider. Tat turned out to be a perfect prep for that year’s Santa Anita Handicap (G1). Before a crowd of nearly 70,000, Crystal Water sat of a very fast pace set by Faliraki and Austin Mittler, moving up to battle with Faliraki as they stepped a mile in 1:341⁄5. Pincay noted years later that Crystal Water “quit running with

hen Triple Crown winner Justify is led forward to breed his frst mare this winter, his safety will be paramount. Valued somewhere between $60 million and priceless, Justify is standing the 2019 season at Ashford Stud in Kentucky for $150,000 and will breed more than 200 mares. To keep stallions such as Justify from being kicked, Ashford’s teaser Eoin, an Appaloosa, will step in frst. Only if a

mare is receptive to the teaser’s advances is the actual stallion brought forward. But teasing a mare — fnding out if they are ready to be bred — is an intensive combination of using ultrasound technology and having an individual teaser stallion “firt” with every single mare on the breeding property, virtually every day. “Teasing is critical for the safety of the stallion,” said Dr. Ghislaine Dujovne, the chief of theriogenology at the University of California, Davis. “It’s more critical in the scenario where you are doing live cover in the Toroughbred world. You get one good kick from a mare, and the stallion is out of commission for the rest of the season, maybe forever.”

Although daily ultrasounds can display the development of a follicle and thus point to a mare’s being ready for breeding, technology doesn’t always tell the whole story. “Sometimes the exam of a mare can be ambiguous,” said Dujovne. “Teasing can help you fgure out where a mare actually is in her cycle, which is useful for more than just being bred. If you are working a large farm with many mares, you can train the people working the farm to tease all the mares and just bring the ones that are showing signs of heat in for ultrasound.” Breeding season in California is an intense time, with hundreds of mares being

teaser for Arabians and a miniature horse stallion that would deal with Toroughbred mares. One of Ballena Vista Farm’s three teasers is 11-year-old California-bred Otto Von Voom, a fve-time winning son of Skimming. What do farm employees look for when their horse is doing a round of teasing? Tere are obvious signs that a mare is ready to be bred, which she displays in a process called “breaking down.” “It varies from mare to mare because some tease easier than others,” Dujovne explained. “But in general they raise their tail and will urinate. Tey tilt their hip by moving the stifes and fexing the hocks. Tat is a ‘ready to breed’ position. Tey will look for the stallion and stay still for him with an arched back.” Lastly, mares display vulvar winking. “A mare that is breaking down is safe to breed,” Dujovne said. But what happens when a mare appears ready on an ultrasound but isn’t responding to teasing? “You may have to take extra precautions or measures when you go to breed those mares,” Dujovne said. “It could be that they did not tease because they are shy, or are in a pen with mares who are more dominant. If they already have a foal on their side, they tend not to tease in front of a stallion because they are protecting their baby and not thinking about breeding. It’s not a technique that works 100% of the time.” Sue Greene, who owns Woodbridge Farm in Oakdale, has two teasers, a gray Arabian named Tommyjoe and a Shetland pony named Sir Richard. Greene said that Tommyjoe is “worth his weight in gold. He does most of the ‘dirty’ work, especially in the breeding shed. He gets to really romance the ladies before we bring (Woodbridge stallion) Tannersmyman into the shed. Tommy is great. He’s loud but very gentle.” Sir Richard is used for more timid RENEE BECKWITH

serviced each month. “We tease every mare,” said Mike Allen, manager at Tommy Town Toroughbreds in Santa Ynez. “I don’t know what other people do, but if they aren’t teasing all their mares, then they may miss some. Mares don’t always do stuf by the book; you can ultrasound a mare with a follicle that isn’t actually in heat. If you don’t tease, you’re going to have a hard time.” Teaser horses, who are typically, but not necessarily, stallions, are valuable tools for their farms. “Next to your vet, it’s your most important tool that you’ve got for breeding,” Allen said of teasing. Tommy Town currently only has one teaser, a 22-year-old winning son of Miswaki named Tonga Boy. “I’d rather have two, but he’s a good one,” Allen said. What makes a teaser good at his job? “He’s easy for people to handle, but is aggressive toward the mares,” Allen said. “He’ll nibble or bite at Teasers are a valuable part of any breeding farm them, and that’s what you want them to do. He makes noise when you’re going around so that the mares know he’s coming.” Allen does Tommy Town’s teasing himself, watching the mares and writing down observations and comments while someone else handles the stallion. He notes it can take an hour to an hour and a half each day to tease all the open (non-pregnant) mares on the property. Te crew at Ballena Vista Farm in Ramona has a lot of ground to cover each day. Te farm has three teasers and four palpation chutes covering three areas. “All the open mares are teased every day,” said Jeanne Davis, sales and marketing manager at the farm. “Foaling mares are teased every day once they have a foal. Tommyjoe, an Arabian, is one of the teasers at Woodbridge Farm We are already teasing every other day this time of year (in December). It is not out of the question for a gelding, such as Fortissimo, above, to act as a teaser

At Blue Diamond Horseshoe, resident stallion Hidden Blessing meets a receptive mare

mares. “He helps me with the shy mares, or the ones who don’t like the white Arabian,” Greene said. “He never lets much slip past his careful watch. Teasers are an invaluable segment to any breeding operation.” Blue Diamond Horseshoe in Aguanga has an 11-year-old imported German Hanoverian as its teaser. Fortissimo, or Mo for short, gives rides around the farm on trails under a Western saddle when he isn’t working. “Te girls love him,” said manager Renee Beckwith. “We walk him down the aisle every day, and the mares just do their thing. Some horses just have that magic.” Blue Diamond Horseshoe is a rarity in that its resident stallions, including James Street and Hidden Blessing, can also be used to tease mares. “Tey will all behave,” Beckwith said. “None of them jump a mare until you tell them that they can. We tease them in rope halters, then put on a leather halter with a shank when it’s time to breed. Tat’s when they know it’s time for the real thing.” Fortissimo is also unique in that he is a gelding. Although it is more difcult to tease mares with a gelding, it isn’t impossible. “You can use a gelding, especially if the gelding has the acquired behavior,” said Dujovne. “It’s just less common. If the gelding was a stallion before but gelded later in life, they can tease. Some mares

with strong estrus will tease to a gelding. You need a horse that shows some interest in the mares, will make stallion noises, and call them in.” Alternately, a stallion that is too quiet will be difcult to use as a teaser. “He needs to have a good libido and good sexual interest, while also being easy to handle,” said Dujovne. “If he’s too excited, he may get hurt or mares may get hurt.”

He returned to the United States for the grade 1 Norfolk Stakes at Santa Anita in September, fnishing ninth behind the likes of Street Hero and Midshipman. He was retired after bowing a tendon in 2009. Te former Magali Farms, where Liturgical was on rehab following his injury, took over his ownership in 2010 and made him its resident teaser. “He has been doing it successfully ever since,” said Barton Toroughbreds’ Lacey Lambert Coler. Teasers are invaluable to their breeding operations, but Dujovne noted there is an aspect to the job that can be unpleasant. “It may be humanizing to think this, but it’s not the best job if they never get to breed,” she noted. “I used to work for a Toroughbred farm that had a Quarter Horse as a teaser, and I always found him something that he could breed or I collected him. It can seem mean to never let them breed, but again, maybe that is humanizing them. Maybe in nature there would be a more dominant stallion that would kick him out of the way anyway.” According to Dujovne, a good teaser “has a good libido but is easy to handle. He will call for mares, but respect his human handler. Even though they get excited, they have to know that once their work is done, they need to back up and be able to handle that. As long as he is submissive to the handler, you can train that for the most part.”

With a strong push toward aftercare for racehorses and fnding them second careers, teasing is not a bad option. Barton Toroughbreds’ teaser is Liturgical, a winning son of Songandaprayer. Te 12-year-old stallion once sold for $22,000 as a Keeneland September yearling in 2007, then did his early training in England. He failed to sell at €90,000 ($189,917) during the Gof’s breezeup sale for juveniles in 2008, ultimately breaking his maiden at Redcar that June.

alilean frst made headlines when he topped the 2018 Barretts spring sale of 2-yearolds at $600,000. But the California-bred turned even more heads with his nine-length romp in the Dec. 16 King Glorious Stakes at Los Alamitos.

King Glorious created a slew of headlines himself when he earned more than $1 million and was voted the 1988 California-bred Horse of the Year. Jerry Hollendorfer trained King Glorious for owner/breeder Halo Farms, and he now trains Galilean for the partnership of West 34

Point Toroughbreds, Denise Barker, and William Sandbrook. Terry Finley of West Point Toroughbreds purchased Galilean, a son of Uncle Mo—Fresia, by El Prado, at the Barretts sale. “I just thought he was a beautiful horse that would have ft in any of the sales,” said Finley right after buying the colt. “Te fact that he’s a California-bred is just icing on the cake. He was a very special horse.” Galilean continued to prove himself special in Hollendorfer’s barn. Te trainer sent him directly into stakes competition, and Galilean broke his maiden by a neck in the $100,000 Barretts Juvenile Stakes at Los Alamitos Sept. 22. In his next start, the $196,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes Nov. 3 at Santa Anita, Galilean ran second by the same narrow margin to Cruel Intention. Both of those starts came at sprint dis-

tances, and Hollendorfer stretched out Galilean to a mile for the King Glorious. Te colt relished the added real estate. Jockey Flavien Prat was able to rate him on the lead, getting the frst quarter-mile in :23.92 and the half in :47.35. “He broke really sharp and relaxed well for me,” said Prat. “I was confdent he would give me a good kick when I asked him.” Tat “good kick” took Galilean farther and farther away from his fve rivals. By midstretch, he sported a 31⁄2-length lead, and he coasted home in 1:35.06. Our Silver Oak ran second, three lengths ahead of Feeling Strong. “Tat was good,” said Hollendorfer. “He went a pretty slow frst quarter and half-mile, and a good horse should be able to handle those types of fractions. We’re taking one step at a time with him. We’ll take a good look at a lot of diferent things, and the fact that he can route makes a big diference.” K. Neal and Pam Christopherson’s Bar C Racing Stables bred Galilean. Tey bought Fresia, carrying Galilean, for $35,000 at the 2015 Keeneland November sale. Fresia foaled Galilean at John Harris’ Harris Farms. Barren to Unusual Heat, she has a 2018 colt by Harbor the Gold, the sire of Cal-bred champion California Diamond. She became the stallion’s frst stakes winner in the Soviet Problem. Miller unveiled Kookie Gal Oct. 18 at Santa Anita, where she broke her maiden by a head in a Cal-bred, California-sired maiden race at a mile on the turf. She stayed on that surface for the $102,415 Jimmy Durante Stakes Nov. 24 at Del Mar, fnishing ffth. Los Alamitos doesn’t have a turf course, so Miller’s only options were to run on dirt or to wait for the Santa Anita meeting. He elected to run Kookie Gal in the

Racing three wide, she collared Hotitude and Creative Instinct, who had battled with each other early, stopping the timer in 1:37.18. Hotitude got second by a half-length over Creative Instinct, who fnished four lengths ahead of fourthplace All Tea All Shade. “I think having the blinkers of really helped her,” said Alvarado of Kookie Gal. “She was training well at Del Mar, so we decided to try her on dirt and that maybe we would get lucky.”

el Mar and the California Toroughbred Breeders Association might eventually have to rename the Cary Grant Stakes as the Solid Wager Stakes. Te 2011 gelding has competed in the race for the past four years, winning three times and fnishing second once.

Solid Wager, owned by Gary and Cecil Barber and Stanford Stable, doesn’t care who rides him. Joe Talamo got the job done with him in 2015, and Victor Espinoza won the race with Solid Wager in 2016. Espinoza returned on board in 2017, when they lost by just a half-length to Edwards Going Left. In 2018, with Drayden Van Dyke up, Solid Wager stoutly avenged that defeat, vanquishing Edwards Going Left by 61⁄4 lengths.

“Wow, he never wins like that,” said Peter Miller, who has trained Solid Wager his entire career. “He’s always a Stormy Liberal nail-biter, gets up in the last jump type. But today he was on it.” Seven California-breds and one California-sired horse met in the Nov. 18 Cary Grant at Del Mar over seven furlongs. Bettors made Edwards Going Left the 8-5 favorite, and Solid Wager went of as the 9-2 third choice. Solid Wager raced in sixth early as Tough But Nice, a Kentucky-bred son of Good Journey, set the early pace. Edwards Going Left stalked between horses in the middle of the pack. “He was running great, and I had all the horses I was concerned about in my sights,” said Van Dyke. “And then he went right on by without me even asking him. He just ran away from them.” Solid Wager made his bid on the turn. Tough four wide into Trainer Peter Miller and jockey Drayden Van Dyke do the honors for Solid Wager’s victory the stretch, he grabbed the lead 38

easily and sailed to victory, stopping the timer in 1:22.47. Edwards Going Left and jockey Tyler Baze fnished a half-length in front of Brandothebartender, ridden by Talamo, in second. “It’s fun riding horses that run like that,” said Van Dyke. Solid Wager has come from far back in each of his Cary Grant attempts. He makes that same wide move, most of the time successfully. Madera Toroughbreds bred Solid Wager, a son of Birdonthewire—G Ma, by Valid Wager. “I know he loves this track; this is his favorite racetrack,” said Miller. “And seven-eighths is his favorite distance.” Solid Wager performs well elsewhere too—he has won multiple times at Santa Anita and once at Hollywood Park. In late 2016 he captured the 61⁄2-furlong Midnight Lute Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita. He now has 10 wins, eight seconds, and fve thirds in 47 starts for earnings of $740,731. “For a 7-year-old, he looked pretty spritely out there,” said Miller.

Te 25-year-old doesn’t drive but gets up at 4:30 every single morning to make it to Santa Anita for workouts. He then spends much of the afternoon editing photos and photographing races before heading to bed early to do it all again. “He literally knows every horse and exercise rider out there, just from watching and paying attention,” said Margaret Ransom, editor of the Lady and Te Track news site. Te website features many of Belmonte’s photos. “He knows what time they train and knows if they go out later or do something else unusual one day. It’s a passion for him.” Belmonte likes to say that he’s been going to the races since before he was born. “My dad and my grandpa were big on going to the track,” he said. “My mom went with them as soon as she met my dad. I spent weekends as a kid either going to the track or at least watching the races at home.” He became a fan of such standout stakes horses as the top mare Azeri, California-bred superstar Tiznow, and the classy flly Surfside before getting to experience the phenomenon that was Zenyatta in person. “I was there when she won the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita, and it was so loud I couldn’t even hear Trevor Denman’s voice. It was such a good moment for racing.” A more recent favorite is Unique Bella. Belmonte was crushed when the popular gray mare was retired via injury over the summer. Despite frequenting the track his whole life, not until the end of 2015 did Belmonte try his hand at photography. “I started on Dec. 26—Santa Anita opening day—and it’s been my passion ever since,” he said. “I was always an early riser, so I fgured if I really worked hard and went every morning that I would get better.” Belmonte is well-known for his work on Twitter under the handle @ErnieBPhoto93, and several major owners and trainers retweet his photos. His frst big breakthrough came earlier this year when he was hired by Lady and Te Track. “It was such a happy moment for me when I got my frst credential,” he said. “All the hard work had fnally paid of.” In 2018 San Gabriel resident Belmonte also graduated from

I would love to go to the Kentucky Derby and to see Saratoga and Keeneland. I want to know what other tracks are like.” Ransom is inspired by Belmonte’s talent and devotion and knows he is capable of more. “His work is good, but I’m hoping he will step outside his comfort zone,” she said. “His action shots are great, and you can rely on him to get that winning shot every time, every day. But once he starts investing more in equipment and learning more about lighting, I really think he can take his stuf to the next level.”

“I help to manage it as the boots on the ground, so to speak,” Butterworth explained. And thanks to a special work program, Butterworth is more equipped than most. After graduating from George Fox University in Oregon, Butterworth dove into a year of working with Michelle and Eric Clarke at their Rancho Bayo. Te Texas farm specializes in Kiger Mustangs, Lusitanos, and Iberian sport horses. Te experience taught her more than she ever could have imagined. “For me, growing up with Toroughbred racehorses, I thought I would go work at another ranch,” Butterworth said. “How much new stuf could I learn? I’d say 98% of what I learned I had never even been exposed to. Michelle has French classical dressage training while Eric does natural horsemanship. If there is a problem horse that other trainers can’t fx, he’s the guy they go to. “I made the commitment to live there for a year while working 61⁄2 days a week, and then realized I should probably go down and at least visit before I jumped into it.” On her very frst visit Butterworth was blown away. “What I saw was so impressive—what people can do with a horse without a halter and lead rope on. I learned about liberty training, where body language is a big deal. I had a lot of exposure to diferent kinds of horses and temperaments.” But there was an even greater lesson to be learned for someone in the Toroughbred world. “To listen to (Michelle) as she evaluates horses and the biomechanics of hip and shoulder angles, she can tell you a lot about a horse that is just standing there,” Butterworth said. “She knows whether the angle allows a hind leg to reach farther forward, etc. I learned about lameness issues; how much is generic conformation fault versus posture, pain, and stress? Is it a training issue or a pain issue? “Tere were certain horses or conformation faults that I wouldn’t have touched. To see the body worker come out and work on a horse, and within two sessions the horse is a diferent-looking animal—that helped open my eye to knowing if the horse is overcompensating.” Butterworth has taken this knowledge back with her to West 12, where, among other duties, she works with the weanlings.

Sarah Butterworth was always going to work on her parents’ West 12 Ranch, but she took a circuitous route on her way there. Te 29-year-old grew up on the stunning Lodi property, which encompasses 40 acres and is home to around 35 horses. She is among the third generation of Butterworths to call it home.

West 12 Ranch’s Sarah Butterworth is skillfully learning the ropes for raising Thoroughbreds

“One flly that arrived as a weanling was very aggressive,” Butterworth recalled. “Had I not gotten the training I did, I wouldn’t have been able to get through to her. I fgured out that she was extremely insecure, but extremely smart.” Butterworth used her new knowledge to help the flly think forwardly and eventually earned her trust. “I want to set the yearlings up for the industry standard so that they will be okay to handle on any other farm or racetrack. It is also useful for sales prep.” Butterworth alternates feeding days with another employee, which she says gives each the advantage of noticing whether a horse is losing weight. “Tere are things you wouldn’t notice if you saw the horse every single day,” she explained. She also watches herd behavior and social interaction of the horses in an efort to adjust things immediately if a horse isn’t feeling balanced within its herd at the farm. Her year of training might have been intensive, but the efect on her work at West 12 Ranch has been clear. “We had a foal that we could tell as soon as it was born that it was super reactive about being touched around its poll,” Butterworth said. “You’d think that was the horse’s personality, but I remembered a story from my Texas mentors that one time something got pinched in the poll when the foal was going through the birth canal. Once someone adjusted our foal’s poll, it was able to relax.”

Dr. Maria Schnobrich, a boarded theriogenologist at the LeBlanc Center for Reproduction, Rood and Riddle, said one of the unique things ofered at Rood and Riddle is the oviduct fush. “Tis is something that can sometimes help a mare become pregnant if other eforts fail,” said Schnobrich. “Tere are many diferent pathologies that can cause a mare not to become pregnant. In this instance, we may not be sure exactly what is causing the infertility, but we utilize this fush if the mare is unable to establish a pregnancy. “Te mare usually has a history of producing pregnancies, and then she may have a year when you can’t get her pregnant at all. At the 14-day pregnancy check, there is nothing there. It can be a maiden mare or a mare that’s had pregnancies.” Te mare’s oviduct is unique compared to that of other do-

“We know that this happens in horses,” said Schnobrich. “If bacteria are in a bioflm, they can be very resistant to antibiotics. To treat those mares, we use bioflm disrupters like hydrogen peroxide or acetylcysteine or DMSO. Now we can test to see which of these would be most efcacious against a particular bioflm. We can take a culture from the mare and run this test to determine which of those treatments would work best. Te cultured bacteria allows itself

BIOFILM TESTING

“We are also ofering a test for bioflm in the uterus,” said Schnobrich. “We are excited about this. It is thought that some of the mares with persistent infections that won’t clear might have bacteria living in a dormant state or within a bioflm that ofers the bacteria some protection—out of reach of antibiotics.” Infections involving bioflm are extremely hard to treat because enzymes in the bioflm’s polymeric matrix protect microorganisms against antibiotics and the host’s defenses. Hard-to-treat bioflm infections are often chronic and recurring.

mestic animals. “Tere is a small sphincter that allows only the embryo to pass through, and not unfertilized eggs,” said Schnobrich. “We don’t know whether the oviduct in this area is prone to closing of because of debris or some other problem, but the fush basically cleans it out.” Tis is a standing procedure with the mare sedated. “We do hysteroscopy with a little camera on the endoscope so we can identify and locate the opening of the oviduct and fush fuid through it,” said Schnobrich. “Tere has been a lot of research trying to determine whether the mare does have an occluded oviduct, but we aren’t sure. Tis procedure does seem to work on a select group of mares. “Tis treatment technique was developed by a Japanese veterinarian, but we ofer it here at our clinic, and it’s not something that a lot of other clinics offer. If we do appropriate case selection (mares that we suspect might have this problem) and select for mares that have the correct history and everything else is normal, we get about 60 to 70% of those mares pregnant within two covers. “We did a study on this three years ago and found that this procedure can be very efective, given the right case selection.”

to form a bioflm, and then we test it with these agents to see which one gives the most reduction in bioflm and bacteria. “We’ve been working with Ryan Ferris (who designed the assay) at Colorado State University before he went to private practice recently in Oregon, and this is something we are excited about.” Tis might be one more way to treat mares that are difcult to get pregnant because of persistent infection. “Tis should help us provide a more targeted treatment for these mares because it helps us know which agent will be best to use,” said Schnobrich.

Dr. Patrick McCue, with the Equine Reproduction Laboratory at Colorado State University, says there have been a number of recent advances in diagnostic techniques when working with problem mares and stallions. “Some of these techniques are newer than others,” said McCue. “For uterine infections, one of the newer methods being used to supplement (rather than replace) traditional uterine culture and cytology for identifcation of infections in the uterus is the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test. Tis enables us to look at the DNA footprint of bacterial or fungal organisms in the uterus.” A PCR test takes just a few hours whereas a culture could take several days. “We can collect a sample from the uterus with a traditional swab or lavage or a biopsy, and test it for the presence of DNA of bacterial or fungal organisms,” said McCue. “Tere are some situations in individual mares when this is a more sensitive technology to identify infectious organisms than a culture. Te culture and cytology are still the mainstays of diagnosis of uterine infections, but, in my opinion, PCR will be used more and more for detection and identifcation of infectious organisms.” Diagnostics for the presence of an ovarian abnormality, such as a granulosa cell tumor, involves a test for a hormone called anti mullerian hormone (AMH). “Te AMH test has been shown to be more efective for detection of a granulosa cell tumor than previous diagnostic tests, which include inhibin and testosterone,” said McCue. “Only a few labs do these tests, however. We send ours to U.C. Dr. Dickson Varner, professor and Pin Oak Stud chair of Stallion Reproductive Studies at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University (TAMU), says his research group is collaborating with the university’s genomics group to identify genetic markers of fertility. “At present, stallions are selected as sires because of their performance record, pedigree, and Taking a culture from a mare can determine what kind conformation—with little regard of treatment is best in dealing with bioflm infections for fertility,” said Varner. “As a result, we have to deal with a lot of stal- acrosome reaction, allowing fertility to lions that don’t have excellent fertility. occur.” So we have developed methods to help Tis is why, ideally, the mare is insempreserve their semen and help improve inated prior to ovulation rather than afthe fertility of these horses. ter ovulation, so the sperm have time to “We don’t know whether or not there go through these changes. is a genetic component to fertility issues, so we tend to treat it as though it’s not a genetic component. breeding sometimes has a lower pregnancy rate.” One of the assays the TAMU reproductive lab devised has identifed a subset of stallions that have greatly reduced fertility. “Tey might have pregnancy rates per cycle of only 5 to 20%,” said Varner. “Our genomics colleague, Dr. Terie Raudsepp, found that these particular subfertile stallions were homozygous for susceptibility site on a particular gene locus. She had previously detected this susceptibility locus using genomics techniques. It is a variable site, and if it is homozygous (AA) for both of these two variable sites, these stallions have reduced fertility even though they seem to produce an appropriate (or nearly appropriate) level of acrosome reactions with our acrosome reaction test, compared to the fertile control stallions. “I think that our customary acrosome reaction assay can pick up some of the profound subfertility issues in stallions. But possibly this genetic test will allow us to identify other stallions that have this susceptibility gene and reduced fertility. “We are probably picking up more stallions that have a genetic factor associated with reduced fertility, so we’d like to apply that same type of strategy to identify other types of reproductive problems. Tere is probably an assortment of genes that contribute to reduced fertility. We plan to work with Dr. Raudsepp and others to try to identify other genetic causes of subfertility in horses. “Typically, a person would take a stallion with reduced fertility and apply techniques to try to maximize that fertility. But if we have a variety of genetic tests that we can apply to these horses, we might have better justifcation for selectively breeding away from COURTESY OF DR. PETE SHEERIN

New ways are also being developed to evaluate sperm. “We want to be able to evaluate as many sperm compartments as we can,” said Varner, “and use that battery of tests to provide a better predictive value of that sperm’s fertilizing capability. To that end, we are looking at an assortment of tests. “We are focusing on methods to evaluate reactive oxygen species and their impact on oxidative injury to the DNA and to the membranes. Tese are relatively new experiments. Tere is one assay that has been available for a number of years, and in recent years it’s been applied to sperm. Tis is a test that can evaluate the damaging efect of reactive oxygen species on the DNA. “When we think of reactive oxygen species, we often think of 62

We have a post-doctoral person in our laboratory who is refning the technique to make it a more useful test for evaluating DNA oxidative injury. The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Dec. 17, 2018.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
