lmost no one ever spoke to Sherwood Chillingworth by calling him Mr. Chillingworth. He was “Chilly” right from that frst introduction, but the nickname had nothing to do with his demeanor. Warm and friendly, Chilly had a low chuckle that would erupt often and early in any conversation.

Gregson Foundation to the Winners Foundation and Race Track Chaplaincy of America. Perhaps most importantly to California breeders, Oak Tree partnered with the California Toroughbred Breeders Association to create the California Cup. Chilly was involved in that project from the beginning. “Chilly and Oak Tree have been tremendous supporters of California breeding, in particular their co-sponsorship and

Sherwood Chillingworth died Oct. 8 at age 93. What that doesn’t convey is that the racing industry lost a friend whose efforts made racing run more smoothly and allowed countless people and animals to receive help. Chilly was able to help primarily as the executive vice president of the Oak Tree Racing Association, a position he had held since 1993. He had been appointed to the Oak Tree board in 1989. Oak Tree ran a fall race meeting at Santa Anita from 1969-2009 and one meeting at Hollywood Park in 2010. It also partnered with Pleasanton for several years. While initially the fall meeting was designed to expand the Southern California racing calendar, from the very beginning Oak Tree was about charitable donations, many within the industry. Chilly worked with the Oak Tree board to approve donations for a wide variety of industry causes to aid horses and humans. Oak Tree helped start the Southern California Equine Foundation and the creation of equine hospitals on the backstretches of California racetracks. It gave needed funds to research at the University of California at Davis Center for Equine Health and has supported CARMA. It provided seed money to start the National Toroughbred Racing Association and the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium. Oak Tree constantly provided money

He began his professional career with Richfeld Oil Company, negotiating oil concessions internationally. After Richfeld merged into Atlantic Richfeld, he conducted that company’s real estate operations in the western states. Chilly later practiced law and worked in real estate development. Under the nom de course of Paniolo Ranch, he entered partnerships in several racehorses, including major winners Swing Till Dawn, Yashgan, Forzando, and Valley Victory. Forzando, winner of the 1985 Metropolitan Handicap (G1), Sierra Madre Handicap (G3T), and Fort Marcy Handicap (G3T), meant so much to Chilly that he used the name on the license plate of his car for years. “He was a great man who was a very big part of the Oak Tree Racing Association for many years,” said Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella, a fellow Oak Tree board member. “He lived a full life and from what I knew, he loved every minute of it. He had a great sense of humor, he loved to bet, and he loved our game.” Chilly was also a past steward of Te Jockey Club, secretary of the board of the Toroughbred Racing Associations, director of the Toroughbred Racing and Protective Bureau, and member of the Equibase Management Committee. In recent years Oak Tree has maintained its ofces within the CTBA building. Chilly was a cheerful presence. “Te CTBA ofces will defnitely feel more empty without him,” said Burge. “He was one of the good guys.””

Don’t Sell outfnished her fellow Cal-bred by 11⁄4 lengths in the 51⁄2-furlong turf event, with Apache Princess another length in front of third-place Holly Hundy. Te time was 1:01.58. Evin Roman rode Don’t Sell for trainer Doug O’Neill and owner/ breeder Reddam Racing. By Paul and Zillah Reddam’s stallion Square Eddie, Don’t Sell is out of the In Excess mare Too Much Excess. Don’t Sell is a full sister to How About Zero, a Reddam homebred who captured the 2016 Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes and the 2018 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes. “Te Square Eddies will sprint, route, turf, and dirt,” said O’Neill. California-breds El Tigre Terrible and Bulletproof One completed a Peter Miller-trained Exacta in the $101,755 Speakeasy Stakes at Santa Anita Oct. 6. El Tigre Terrible went of at 23-1, while Bulletproof One was the 5-1 third choice. Together they paid $232 for a $1 Exacta. With Ruben Fuentes in the irons, El Tigre Terrible raced last early and came on late to defeat Bulletproof One by a head in :55.78 for fve furlongs on the turf. Bulletproof One was a half-length ahead of third-place Greg’s Diva, with favored Ginobili fourth. Miller trains El Tigre Terrible for owners Slam Dunk Racing and Michael Nentwig. Martin Bach bred the 2-year-old son of Smiling Tiger—King City Kitty, by Gotham City. Slam Dunk purchased El Tigre Terrible from the Woodbridge Farm consignment for $18,000 at the 2018 Barretts October yearling and mixed sale. El Tigre Terrible was winning

PEE WEE REESE RECOVERING Multiple graded stakes winner Pee Wee Reese suffered a fetlock injury galloping out after a work Oct. 12 at San Luis Rey Downs. Following surgery Oct. 14 at nearby San Luis Rey Equine Hospital, the California-bred was doing well, though veterinarians cautioned that it would be some time before they would be able to rule Pee Wee Reese completely out of danger. “Dr. Ryan Carpenter drove down there and performed the surgery,” said Nick Alexander, who bred and owns Pee Wee Reese. “They put a cast on him and got him up really carefully. He was a good boy and did everything they said, and by that night he was eating, drinking water, and standing on all four feet. It couldn’t have gone any better.” Winner of the Sept. 27 Eddie D. Stakes (G2T-see page 34), Pee Wee Reese was training in preparation for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) Nov. 2 at Santa Anita. A 6-year-old son of Tribal Rule—Bluegrass Belle, by Unbridled’s Song, Pee Wee Reese had won eight of 15 races for earnings of $532,901. Trained by Phil D’Amato, he was two for two this year, having earlier captured the Sensational Star Stakes. He also won the 2018 Joe Hernandez Stakes and 2017 American Stakes (G3T). Alexander praised the staff, led by Dr. Nick Huggons and Dr. Korin Potenza, at the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital for Pee Wee Reese’s care. Alexander would like to stand Pee Wee Reese at stud eventually, depending on the horse’s recovery process. “I think he deserves a chance at stud,” said Alexander, who noted that he was in the stall when Pee Wee Reese was foaled in 2013. “I’ve got some mares that I’m going to breed to him, though we might have to wait a year. We have a lot of people rooting for him.”

■ Clubhouse Ride, Sire of Warren’s Showtime, to Legacy

California sire Clubhouse Ride has been moved to Pete and Evelyn Parrella’s Legacy Ranch in Clements. He will stand the 2020 breeding season for $3,500 live foal. The stallion, in his second crop to the races, has been represented by Ben and Sally Warren’s stakes-winning Warren’s Showtime. Winner of the Oct. 6 Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita, Warren’s Showtime is out of California-bred champion Warren’s Veneda. A homebred for Ben Warren, Warren’s Veneda earned $932,112, won the 2015 Santa Margarita Stakes (G1) and Santa Maria Stakes (G2), and was named that season’s champion Cal-bred older female. Craig Lewis trains Warren’s Showtime, Clubhouse Ride’s frst stakes winner, and he also trained Clubhouse Ride and Warren’s Veneda. Clubhouse Ride earned $1,341,132, having won such races as backto-back editions of the Californian Stakes (G2) in 2013-14. Clubhouse Ride is California’s current 2019 leading sire of 2-year-old winners with nine, including Warren’s Showtime. “We have been looking to add another high-quality stallion to our roster and are very excited that Clubhouse Ride became available and that owners Rick Seidner and Craig Lewis felt Legacy Ranch would be the right ft for the stallion,” said Pete Parrella. Clubhouse Ride is an 11-year-old son of Candy Ride—Seeking Results, by Seeking the Gold.

Dennis Yokum has been named the farm manager of Tom and Nancy Clark’s Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel, Calif. Yokum previously managed Premier Toroughbreds. He was a friend and longtime protégé of Clay Murdock, who managed Rancho San Miguel until his death Sept. 3. On the racetrack, Yokum worked for Hall of Fame trainer Charlie Whittingham, as well as for trainers John Gosden and Dick Dutrow. Yokum also has worked

at such Kentucky farms as Calumet Farm, Spendthrift Farm, and Domino Stud. He served as the farm manager of Mercedes Stables, which owned such runners as grade 1 winners Rock Hard Ten and Seattle Smooth. “No one can replace Clay, but it is an honor to have the opportunity to continue the work he has done,” said Tom Clark. “We are very excited to have Dennis join our team and build upon Clay’s legacy.”

At frst glance it seems odd that the California Toroughbred Foundation is awarding this year’s Louis R. Rowan Fellowship in Equine Studies to a mechanical engineering Ph. D. candidate at U. C. Davis. But Sarah Shafer earned this honor by her work with horses. She graduated with a B.S. from Te Ohio State University with research honors, minoring in equine science and writing a horse study for her Sarah Shaffer thesis. Her current research at the J. D. Wheat Veterinary Orthopedic Research Laboratory at Davis involves studying the efects of race surface and exercise history on skeletal adaptation and risk for skeletal injury in racehorses. Dr. Susan M. Stover, Distinguished Professor at that laboratory, writes about Ms. Shafer: “I have been remarkably impressed with her enthusiasm, drive, diverse skills, optimism, and ‘get in and do it’ attitude. She is a remarkable ft for our research program, designed to elucidate training programs that have the potential to prevent fetlock breakdowns in Toroughbred racehorses.” Shafer chose to move to Davis for graduate school so she could work with veterinarians on an engineering project to improve equine welfare. Her intention is to work in the equine biomechanics feld as a professor at a research institution after completing her Ph.D. An enthusiastic equestrian, she works with her reining Quarter Horse in Davis and trains her dog for agility activities.

Te California Toroughbred Foundation Te California Toroughbred Foundation is dedicated to the advancement of equine research and education. Since 1958, the Foundation has operated as a non-proft 501(c)3 corporation that can accept tax-deductible contributions. For more than four decades the CTF has sponsored numerous research and educational projects and awarded scholarships to veterinary students at U.C. Davis and Western University of Health Sciences. Te Foundation maintains the Carleton F. Burke Memorial Library, one of the most extensive collections of equine literature found anywhere. Several generous donations of book collections and artwork form the core of the Library, which is housed in the CTBA ofces in Arcadia. Among its 10,000 volumes are current veterinary publications, turf histories, sales catalogs, and books spanning a wide range of subjects from equine nutrition and care to fne arts. Linda Madsen provided the setting at her Milky Way Farm in Temecula. Attendees could choose to participate in discussions on a wide variety of topics.

In one location, Dr. Celeste Spini palpated mares as she discussed managing broodmares. Dr. Gregory Ferraro, new commissioner with the California Horse Racing Board, is dedicated to regaining the public’s trust by ensuring horse racing is as safe as possible

s a leader in equine research and in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Gregory Ferraro has made horse racing safer. Trough inventions and techniques he championed over a 45-year career, he helped countless Toroughbreds survive major injury or illness. Now it’s a whole racing industry that needs assistance. As a new commissioner with the California Horse Racing Board, Ferraro wants to help ensure that the sport is as safe as possible and regain public trust.

He’s in a unique position to do so. “I was happily retired, but I got a call asking me to apply,” said the 73-year-old Ferraro. Recently interviewed outside the Ferry Building on the waterfront in San Francisco, Ferraro grew up in that city and returned there to live shortly after his retirement. “I said, ‘Well, seeing what’s going on, I couldn’t stand by and not try to help.’ Tat’s the reason I did it. So it’s a chore (being a board member); it’s not easy. But racing needs help. If I can do them any good, I’m happy to do it.” Ferraro said the CHRB sought someone with his unique set of skills. “Tey were looking for someone with experience on the backside, a good idea of how the backside works. Tey wanted

somebody with academic credentials that could deal with the academic and scientifc end of it. And they wanted someone with good experience dealing with humane groups. Tere are not too many people like that.” Splitting his long career between racetrack veterinarian and director for the Center for Equine Health (CEH) at the University of California, Davis, Ferraro has all that — and more. He served for years as a trustee of the California Toroughbred Foundation, helping that organization in many ways, including fnding worthy candidates for the Foundation’s veterinary scholarships. Ferraro hit the Southern California backstretches frst as an on-track veterinarian and orthopedic surgeon in 1971. He remained there until taking the helm

at CEH in 1997, from where he retired in 2014. “Health and safety have been my issue my whole career,” noted Ferraro, who was named to chair the CHRB’s health and safety committee shortly after his appointment. “I’m looking at the welfare of horses. I want racing to be healthy.” Ferraro joined the CHRB at a time when horse health and safety in California are under intense media scrutiny. Despite public opinion to the contrary, the sport has gotten better with regard to safety over the years, not worse, Ferraro feels. Technology will only improve things in the coming years, he frmly believes. “People don’t really have an understanding of what goes on (at the track), how well the horses are cared for, all the issues involved,” he said. “Anytime you have something turn up in the press—horses killed, horses injured—it upsets people. I think everybody in Toroughbred racing now realizes that they have to change their ways or it’s going to be over.” Among the innovations Ferraro spearheaded—along with a farm equipment manufacturer named John Kimzey— was designing today’s horse ambulance, a prototype developed in the early 1980s and now in use throughout North America and some foreign countries. He and Kimzey also designed and developed the Kimzey Splint, which quickly stabilizes lower-leg injuries that horses incur on the track. Te splint is in wide use and has become a standard on-track veterinarian tool. “Tose two things (the ambulance and the splint) are probably the best things I did for racehorses,” Ferraro said. Ferraro was also the co-founder and frst president of the Southern California Equine Foundation in 1976. Organized as a humane society to stop animal sufering, the non-proft charitable organization was formed to encourage, fund, and oversee medical research for the betterment of horses. It provides top-quality medical care for injured racehorses. With funding from the Oak Tree Racing Association, the Dolly Green Research Foundation, and others, the SCEF established equine hospitals on the backstretches of Hollywood

Park (which was closed in 2013) and Santa Anita Park, later adding a facility at Del Mar. Ferraro estimates that some 5,000 horses have been operated on at the Santa Anita facility over the years, many of them emergencies following racetrack injuries. “We provided surgical facilities and x-rays, (imaging) scans, all under the hospital’s auspices,” he said. “Anyone who is qualifed (to do surgery) can use it. It’s been great, and I’m very proud we did that.” After 27 years on the backstretch, Ferraro accepted an invitation from UC Davis to take charge at the CEH. “I went there because I thought I might be able to do more there for horses than I could at the racetrack. Te whole thing there was equine research, equine educational programs, public service. We funded millions of dollars of research for studies by UC Davis staf and others.” But he also admits that he was discouraged by what he was seeing on the backstretch, in particular the over-prescription of drugs. “Everything was getting out of hand,” he said. “Everything we were doing to beneft horses was getting turned around and used instead to beneft people. It became about money and not about horses. Tat was one of the reasons I went to the university because it bothered me. It wasn’t right. And I was at fault as much as anyone else.” At the CEH, Ferraro was able to step back from the track and look at the longrange benefts the university could provide for horses, and not just those that race. Each year the review committee would consider a host of research proposals and provide funding for as many as possible. To encourage equine research, the CEH maintains a herd of 200 horses. “If you are a researcher from some other university and you want to do a research project on horses, you have to fnd the horses,” Ferraro said. “You have to fnd a place to keep them, fnd people to look after them, and then you are ready to do your research. “At the Center for Equine Health, we provide that. You give us an order, like I

tion. Well, in those days, nobody operated on cows. So I switched to horses.” After graduating, he attended the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatchewan, Canada, where he got some frsthand racetrack experience, before setting of on his own to start a general practice in Southern California. “I did some broodmare work, and I have a great appreciation for the reproductive guys. But it’s not for me.” Ferraro became best known for his orthopedic surgical abilities, mostly with long-bone fractures. He fgures he probably repaired 2,000 condylar fractures, among the most common racing injuries.

need seven geldings between the ages of 8 and 12, we say OK, we assign them to the project, do all the husbandry, and they do their project. So it’s a real boon. By making it easy for them, it encourages them (to do equine studies).” Among the studies that have benefted racehorses is the work by Dr. Sue Stover on surface impact stress on joints and bones, mostly funded by CEH and the Grayson-Jockey Club Foundation. “(Stover) changed everything,” Ferraro said. “She discovered, and we know now, that 85% of horses that break down have a pre-existing stress injury.” Ferraro spent the past summer following his appointment to the CHRB at Del Mar. “I hadn’t been to the backside in a long time,” he said. “Tere were new people, new trainers, new procedures. I wanted to see what was going on, familiarize myself.” Changes put in place by Del Mar staf and the CHRB, led by equine medical director Dr. Rick Arthur, were stringent, but the results were encouraging. Tere were many more eyes on horses and more close veterinary inspections prior to working and racing. Spotters would visit trainers at their barn if they felt anything with a horse was amiss. Vets also spent extra time providing medical records and fling other forms to certify a horse’s ftness to run. “It’s all good (with the veterinarians),” Ferraro said. “Te thing is, it’s all new and a lot of additional work (for track staf), and so a lot of this gets piled onto people that already have a job. So they’re working double time to accomplish it all. To put something like this into place long term, we’re going to have to have more staf, and they’re working on it. Hopefully, as time goes on, we’ll smooth those things out.” Ferraro grew up in a large Italian family in the North Beach section of San Francisco. His father was a butcher, a skill Greg also acquired. “We had a little ranch in the San Joaquin Valley, and horses were part of the deal,” said Ferraro. “But I was really interested in cattle. Growing up in the meat business, I had a journeyman’s license as a meat cutter when I was young. I was good at cutting meat. I could out-cut anybody. “So I went to vet school (at UC Davis) early on because of my experience; the skills were there, and surgery was an obvious op-

He credits the development of arthroscopy for making it possible. “A lot of those chips in the joints, we used to leave them alone, particularly the ones in the fetlock joints, because when you made an incision in the front of the fetlock joint, the scar from the incision would cut down range of motion in the joint and the horse couldn’t run as fast,” he explained. “You’re better of to live with the chip. When the arthroscope came along, you could make a little hole in there and go in and pluck that thing out. Tat just changed the way we handled those horses. It was a real boon.” Innovations like the arthroscope, along

with other technological breakthroughs such as the fberoptic endoscope for checking a horse’s airways, digital x-rays to diagnose leg injuries, and ultrasound images used for locating suspensory problems have all brought major improvements to the maintenance and care of racehorses. Ferraro believes the next big breakthrough should be arriving at Santa Anita this winter—the standing positron emission tomography, or PET Scan. UC Davis researcher Dr. Mathieu Spriet developed the standing version for horses. A PET Scan is similar to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but much more horse-friendly, said Ferraro. It is a doughnut-shaped device that a horse simply steps into for a few seconds while the imaging scan is completed. Tests have shown it to be more efective than other scanning techniques in detecting bone lesions and distinguishing between active and inactive injuries in bone or soft tissue. Ferraro believes it can be especially useful in heading of potential foot or ankle fractures. “Te biggest problem we have with breakdowns and catastrophic injuries always involve the fetlock joint,” he said. “Broken sesamoids, soft-tissue injuries, condylar fractures. . .we have a big problem predicting sesamoids that are likely to fracture. If we can identify the density of a sesamoid bone that is a precursor to fracture, we can cut that down to almost nothing. Tat’s the key to saving horses. Te PET Scan can do it. I’m very hopeful.” Te plan, Ferraro said, is to test as many horses at the track as possible and compare images. “Te most important part is knowing what to look for. If it works out at Santa Anita, I guarantee you every racetrack in the country will get one. “I want racing to be healthy; I want everybody to do well. I think we’ll never get (equine fatalities) to zero, but I think we can cut it way down. Any sport, particularly high-speed sports, there’s risk. People don’t realize it because we’re in the public eye so much, but the fatality rate in Toroughbred racing is much lower than in the general horse population in the United States.” Developments like the PET Scan keep Ferraro optimistic about racing’s future.

Te 4-year-old California-bred flly had been doing just fne stretching out to a mile on the dirt, but trainer Phil D’Amato switched her to sprinting on the turf this year. She responded as she always does—with consistency, fnishing third in the Daisycutter Handicap and then winning an allowance/optional claimer, both at Del Mar. “I think she’s shown an afnity for the grass,” said D’Amato before the California Distaf, a 51⁄2-furlong turf event at Santa Anita Oct. 12. “It’s nice to have a one-two Grazen punch for the Nick Alexander team in there, and they’re both ready to go so we’re looking forward to it.” Grazen, of course, is Alexander’s prolific California stallion. He sired both Just Grazed Me and graded winner S Y Sky, the latter favored at 13-10 in the California Distaf.

As a handicap, the California Distaf sported a weight diferential of 10 pounds, from lightweight Silk From Heaven at 116 to S Y Sky with 126. Just Grazed Me carried 122, including jockey Geovanni Franco. When the gates opened, the Alexander pair few to the front, with S Y Sky leading her stablemate. Don’t Sell got into the fray as well, prompting Franco to ease Just Grazed Me back a tad. “I thought we were going too fast,” said Franco. “So I was able to sit and wait, and she had a great turn of foot through the stretch.”

S Y Sky set fractions of :22.24 for a quarter-mile and :44.64 for a half-mile. Racing four wide, Just Grazed Me ranged up to take command in the stretch, powering home by 13⁄4 lengths in 1:01.82. Don’t Sell held on for second while Gypsy Blue nipped S Y Sky for third. “She really stepped up her game ever since we put her on the grass and found a home,” said D’Amato of Just Grazed Me. “She showed a real nice turn of foot late, so I’m excited to campaign her in the future.” Just Grazed Me became a stakes winner on the dirt, winning the 2018 Fleet Treat Stakes. She also fnished second in that year’s Torrey Pines Stakes (G3) and Betty Grable Stakes. D’Amato didn’t start the flly until her 3-year-old season so that he could get her over some shin problems, and she now has earned $334,332. Alexander bred Just Grazed Me from the Cuvee mare Fairway Road, who earned $119,920 on the track. He sold the mare in foal to Grazen at the 2018 Barretts January sale as part of the Woodbridge Farm consignment. Norman Tavares purchased Fairway Road for $5,000.

en months after throat surgery had sidelined him through the winter and spring, Fashionably Fast completed his triumphant return to the races with a victory in the $100,000 Harris Farms Stakes at Fresno Oct. 5. To put icing on the proverbial cake, Fashionably Fast won for the race’s namesake after fnishing second in the event in 2018. sen, the head trainer at Harris Farms had broken Fashionably Fast and was especially gratifed for the win. “Fashionably Fast came home last January and had throat surgery and a few months of,” Antonsen said. “Now he’s more mature, and taking blinkers of the last three starts made a big diference.” Fashionably Fast’s surgery came after one win and a stakes-placing in eight starts last year. Te gelding also fnished fourth in the Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar. Post-surgery, he returned to the races in June, fnishing ffth at Santa Anita and second at Los Alamitos at the allowance optional claiming level, before scoring three consecutive victories with blinkers of. Te frst win of the streak came at Del Mar in a Cal-bred allowance optional claimer July 27, which Fashionably Fast won by 53⁄4 lengths. He added an August allowance against open company over 61⁄2

furlongs before the trip to Fresno to better his second-place efort from the last year. In the six-furlong Harris Farms Stakes, Fashionably Fast sat third in a six-horse feld, just of the pace set by dueling front-runners My Friend Emma and Baja Sur. Race favorite Fashionably Fast swooped past those rivals in the stretch, winning by three-quarters of a length, with Baja Sur second and My Friend Emma third. Tiago Pereira was up for trainer Dean Pederson. Fashionably Fast fnished the six furlongs in 1:10.52. Tule Fog, Summersimage, and Touching Rainbows completed the order of fnish. Fashionably Fast is one of 11 foals out of the Gulfstream Park stakes winner Fall Fashion, who was also stakes-placed at three other tracks: Tampa Bay Downs, Pimlico, and Monmouth. Te Forestry daughter still resides at Harris Farms. Originally based in Kentucky, Fall Fashion had a pair of Dynaformer foals make it to the races, with the gelding Banco Dinero winning three times. Her Twirling Candy gelding, Fall Harvest, was a two-time winner. Fashionably Fast was born in 2015, followed by a Clubhouse Ride flly named Falling Prices who placed in her debut this year. After not producing live foals from breedings to Acclamation and Rousing Sermon in consecutive years, Fall Fashion had a Clubhouse Ride flly this spring and has been bred to Smiling Tiger for 2020. Tose ofspring will look to top their ultra-consistent older brother. With four wins, three seconds, and two thirds in 13 starts, Fashionably Fast has earned $242,745.

alifornia-breds Pee Wee Reese and Eddie Haskell took on Eclipse Award winner Stormy Liberal and a host of other stakes winners in the $201,053 Eddie D. Stakes (G2T). Tey received so much respect that they went of as the top two choices, and they didn’t disappoint, flling the exacta.

Flavien Prat, got through along the inside; Eddie Haskell and jockey Joel Rosario mounted their challenge from the outside. Te Golden Staters passed the rest, and then it was only a question of whether Eddie Haskell could catch Pee Wee Reese. He tried but didn’t quite make it, Pee Wee Reese defeating Eddie Haskell by a half-length in :55.33. Stormy Liberal fnished 11⁄4 lengths back in third. “He broke well and there were two horses that were of quicker than us, so we sort of sat in behind them,” said Prat. “When we had the opening in the stretch, he gave me a good kick.” Pee Wee Reese was making his frst start since winning the March 31 Sensational Star Stakes in state-bred company. Nick Alexander, who bred and races Pee Wee Reese, said that the horse runs well fresh. Pee Wee Reese has had his share of ailments, sometimes related to suspensory ailments, and Alexander complimented D’Amato’s management. “Phil D’Amato has done an unbelievable job with this horse,” said Alexander. “In between races he’s really done a lot to help him.” Pee Wee Reese has started 15 times, and he has made them all count. He has won eight races, including the 2017 American Stakes (G3T) and 2018 Joe Hernandez Stakes, in addition to the Sensational Star. He also fnished second in the 2017 Crystal Water Stakes and third in the 2017 Seabiscuit Handicap (G2T). Pee Wee Reese is by Tribal Rule— Bluegrass Belle, by Unbridled’s Song. Bloodstock agent Gayle Van Leer bought Bluegrass Belle for Alexander at the 2007 Keeneland November sale for $100,000. “I paid more for that mare than I ever paid for a horse in my life,” Alexander said. Bluegrass Belle produced fve winners in seven starters, including stakes-placed Bluegrass Reward. She died in 2014. “She was a sweet mare, a really nice mare,” said Alexander.

Five years ago Curtis Kalleward had virtually no knowledge of the racing industry. Now he can’t imagine life without it.

his passion while the sport is at its most perilous. “I was given an opportunity in March to take a pretty nice promotion at my normal day job,” he said. “I had just reached a crossroads where I needed to make a decision if this was going to stay a hobby or commit to full time. I was so in love with racing even then, I had to make a decision which career path was I going to take. I made the difcult decision to pursue racing and declined the promotion.” Just two days later Santa Anita was shut down indefnitely due to a rash of fatal injuries. “I was not in a great place mentally because I thought I had just made the biggest mistake of my life,” Kalleward said. “I leaned heavily on a lot of people in the industry for guidance and support.” His story could have had an even more tragic twist because Kalleward was hit and thrown from his motorcycle in early June. He determinedly forced the accident and subsequent time on disability to be a “blessing in disguise. It happened right before the Del Mar and Saratoga meets, so I had no choice but to plant myself in front of the computer and watch racing on days I normally would be in an ofce. I discovered I really liked it. Nothing about it deterred me. Nothing made me think I am doing anything but making the right decision.” While he waits for the opportunity to enter the industry full time, Kalleward is happy spending as much time as possible at the track. “I like the close-knit feeling in California racing. I know the jockeys, the trainers, the horses. Some think racing here is kind of an island, but that just makes me love it even more.”

A visit to Las Vegas in 2015 introduced him to the game. “I met someone playing the horses in a casino,” Kalleward said. “He made it seem really easy and hit a lot of winners, so I thought it was a fast way to make a lot of money. I quickly learned that’s not the case.” But Kalleward was hooked, with passion quickly following curiosity. Originally hailing from Kalamazoo, Mich., the Sherman Oaks resident found his local California track—Santa Anita—and never left. “I love animals, and I love the fast-action nature of horse racing,” he said. “You know within two minutes if you have a return on your investment. You can literally play another race in 10 seconds if you want.” In an efort to try to fnd resources, Kalleward met the men behind the rapidly growing company RacingDudes.com, Jared Welch and Aaron Halterman, who cover racing news and ofer selections for racing across the country. “I profted enough with their picks that I promised if we met I’d buy them a beer,” Kalleward recalled. One beer snowballed into Kalleward’s appointment as the website’s content editor, and trips to the Breeders’ Cup and Kentucky Derby. He covers racing six days a week, both editing and creating his own pieces, and hosts the popular “Magic Mike Show” podcast with friend Mike Somich, previewing and recapping stakes action. Te podcast recently passed 100 episodes, with listenership well over 1,000 streams per episode through combined media sources. Although it would be easy to work from his couch, Kalleward prefers to be in the press box at Santa Anita or Del Mar. “I love the atmosphere,” he said. “I could stay home and watch TVG and more or less do my job. But being at the track is like a drug; it’s addictive to me. I can’t get enough of it.” Saturdays can be especially grueling, as Kalleward singlehandedly reports on stakes action from California, New York, Kentucky, and Canada. But he thrives on the intensity. “Even when I’m tired and mentally drained, I wake up the next morning and wish I was back there again.” Kalleward’s dream is to go into racing full time, bravely pursuing

aime Roth owes everything to Rachel Alexandra. Other players are involved: Parents Larry and Nanci make up the rest of her LNJ Foxwoods moniker, and bloodstock agent Alex Solis II is just one of many horsemen helping drive her success. But without the talent and graceful athleticism of Rachel Alexandra, Roth would never have been hooked. Without that plunge into the sport, there would be no Covfefe, Constellation, Nickname, or California champion Cruel Intention. “I fell in love with her,” Roth said of Rachel Alexandra. “She was a girl running

against the boys.” Tis rang true for the athletic Roth, who was talented enough to play on boys’ teams growing up. “She piqued my interest in horse racing. I found myself up late at night watching old races. I love animals, and I love sports. When you add that up, that’s a Toroughbred.” A 2012 trip to Del Mar helped spur the decision. A family friend set Roth up with Alex Solis II – though at the time, a starstruck Roth thought she was going to be meeting Alex Solis Sr., the Hall of Fame jockey. It was with the son that Roth came up with a plan: get into ownership by way of purchasing fllies. Solis presented a business plan to Roth and her

parents, and shortly thereafter they were at the Keeneland September yearling sale buying horses. “Te rest is history,” Roth said. Te support of her parents has been paramount. “Tey always said to my two older brothers and me that if we had a passion and a dream and could bring a concrete plan to the table, they would do their best to get behind it,” Roth said. “True to their word, they have been very supportive. But I don’t think they themselves thought they would love it like they do, or that we would get to the level we are in eight years. No one could have guessed it would get this big, this quickly.” LNJ Foxwoods started their frst horses in 2013, and by 2015, they had grade 1 winner Nickname. Te daughter of Scat Daddy broke her maiden in her second start at Saratoga, then added the $400,000 Frizette Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park. Nickname fnished fourth behind Songbird in the 2015 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), but that thrill was nothing compared to her debut. Sent over six furlongs in a Saratoga maiden special weight race, Nickname drew right alongside Rachel Alexandra’s daughter Rachel’s Valentina, who went on to win. “It is so weird to want your flly to win, but also be okay with another horse winning,” Roth said. He deals with many reproductive issues in horses and often has to address fertility problems in stallions. He says some of the things that can afect semen include body condition, nutrition, genetics, age of the stallion, season of the year, medications, and hormones.

tility was maintained for a longer period of time in stallions that had been fed the product. “Tis supplement will not make a good stallion better but will usually make a questionable or borderline stallion tolerable. Tose questionable stallions might be able to settle more mares, since sperm motility will last longer—with the potential to increase pregnancy rates. “Te thing people need to realize is that they’d need to start the stallion on the supplement at least 60 days before the beginning of breeding season. It takes that long for sperm to develop and go through the whole cycle.”

BODY CONDITION

A horse carrying too much weight, with an excessive body condition, has more fat in the scrotum than a horse in moderate, ft condition. Te testicles are too well insulated by fat in an overweight stallion. “Tis interferes with proper thermoregulation, which afects semen quality and fertility,” said Dr. Peter Sheerin of Nandi Veterinary Associates in New Freedom, Pa., an equine practice with emphasis on reproduction. Similarly, a starving horse in poor body condition will have poor semen quality.

“With breeding stallions, malnutrition is generally not a big factor in semen quality,” said Edward Squires, PhD and adjunct professor with the Department of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Kentucky. “It would take severe nutritional change to afect sperm output and quality.” An abused or neglected horse in poor body condition might have poor semen quality. But most owners who use stallions for breeding are feeding these horses an adequate, well-balanced diet. “If a stallion is eating feed that is high in estrogen, however, this can have an adverse impact on semen, due to the hormonal feedback on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis,” said Sheerin. “On the other hand, feeds that are high in omega-3 fatty acids like fsh oils, fax seed oils, etc. can have a benefcial efect, aiding the longevity of semen in some cases.” Some nutritional supplements can enhance semen quality. “We’ve done quite a bit of work on Omega-3 fatty acids over the years,” said Squires, “and we know that if a horse has problems, feeding high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids is one way of enhancing semen quality.” Te original product was made from fsh oil, high in omega-3 fatty acids. Now, many other omega-3 products are available. “Some supplements will increase longevity and motility of sperm,” said Sheerin. “Te original research assessed semen from stallions before and after they had been fed the product. After those stallions had been on the supplement more than 60 days (since it takes that long to go through one spermatic cycle—to produce mature sperm), they looked at the semen again. Damage to the scrotum or penis can afect semen quality. “Injury to the scrotum can interfere with normal thermoregulation,” said Sheerin. “If the stallion is kicked and there’s a big hematoma and swelling, this insulates the testicles. If there is trauma to the spermatic cord or cremaster muscle and the stallion can’t raise or lower the testicles (for thermoregulation), this will also have an adverse efect.” Te stallion must be able to keep the testicles at a fairly constant temperature, and the best temperature for viability of sperm is a few degrees lower than body temperature. In cool weather the testicles are pulled up closer to the body for warmth, and in hot weather the testicles drop farther away from the body to keep proper temperature for sperm production and viability. If a horse has been sick, or experiences any situation where body temperature is much higher than normal for very long, this can afect sperm production and viability. If the fever occurred just before or during breeding season, he may be infertile until new sperm comes through its production cycle. His

that any medication given to a horse could potentially have a deleterious effect on semen quality,” said Varner. “If you check the literature, you’ll see that drugs like anti-ulcer medications can have a detrimental efect on testicular function.” Individual stallion response can, of course, vary with any medication and thus so could the impact of medication on fertility. HORMONES

Sometimes people inject a stallion with testosterone if they think he isn’t doing his job breeding mares. “One or two injections are probably not going to hurt, but if you do this routinely there will be detrimental efects,” Squires said. “If a stallion is injected for many days with high levels of testosterone, this can cause a drop in semen quality and also decrease the size of testicles. Tis can dramatically afect semen quality and sperm numbers.” Varner said that in some cases he has prescribed supplemental testosterone to enhance libido of breeding stallions. “While the efect on libido can be pronounced, testosterone can result in reduced testicular size, sperm output, and fertility if given to excess,” Varner said. “Blood levels of testosterone must be closely monitored following drug administration so the dose can be titrated to minimize likelihood of such side efects.” Anabolic steroids can adversely afect semen quality and fertility. Sheerin says this is not as much of a problem in racehorses anymore because their use has been restricted. “Dexamethasone or other corticosteroids can be detrimental if given for long periods of time,” Sheerin said.

GENETICS Some family lines of horses in every breed have lower fertility and poor quality semen. Some stallions are simply not as fertile as others, and this can be genetic. “Stallions are a lot like men; we are not culled based on reproductive ability, as would be the case for most livestock,” said Dr. Dickson Varner of Texas A&M University. Stallions are selected as sires based on pedigree, competitive performance record, and conformation. Fertility is not high on the list and tends to be an afterthought once they transition from an athletic career to breeding. “Little regard is given to their reproductive potential when selecting them as sires,” added Varner. “If a stallion has a great performance record, he is generally considered a good candidate for breeding. He may start his breeding career with reduced fertility—and require veterinary assistance to maximize fertility.” In all other domestic livestock, species fertility is a big issue. Producers do not want to perpetuate animals with low fertility. Dr. Edward Squires of the University of Kentucky says that certain lines of horses have small testicles, poor quality semen, etc. “Testicular size is genetic; some lines of horses have big testicles and others have smaller size,” he said. “This may not affect semen quality as much as it would semen quantity.”

AGE

Older stallions might not be as fertile as they were at a younger age. “Teir fertility problems may be due to age-related testicular dysfunction,” said Varner. “Tis condition can afect some stallions in their early teens, whereas it may not become apparent until early to late 20s in other stallions. Te condition is associated with reductions in testicular size, sperm output, and semen quality, with subsequent reduced fertility, or even sterility in advanced cases.” Older stallions have poorer semen quality than they did when they were younger, but horses age at diferent rates. Eventually semen quality will decrease. When that happens and how severely it happens will depend on the individual stallion. “Typically, the older horse will have smaller testicles—and probably softer testicles—and high-volume ejaculates with low concentration of sperm,” said Varner. “Tat combination equates to a lower quality of semen. Tis can happen at age 15 or as late as 25, but eventually every stallion will show changes due to age.” HOUSING AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT

“Stallions that are housed together, such as in the same barn, have hormonal profles very similar to bachelor stallions that have no interaction with mares,” said Sheerin. “Teir sperm numbers are lower; testosterone levels are lower, etc. Stallions that can see or interact somewhat with mares will be more like a harem stallion and will have higher testosterone levels, better libido, and better semen quality.”

STRESS

Any kind of stress can have an impact, whether it’s stress from hard work, illness, the way the horse is handled or housed, stress from adverse weather, etc. Prolonged stress can be detrimental to semen production and quality, according to Sheerin. Anything that causes a lot of stress can have a subsequent efect on fertility.

“It often depends on the duration of the stress, so we need a good historical perspective when a stallion comes in for an examination and has reduced semen quality,” said Varner. “Racing or a lot of exercise produces body heat. Te localized heat can cause a reduction in sperm quality and testicular size. It helps if the owner www.ctba.com

“A horse that is started too young and used too often can get into bad habits of mounting without an erection, biting the mares, showing signs of frustration,” said Squires. “Tis can happen if the horse is started early and used too hard, though his semen quality may still be adequate.”
