NewsBits Agreement in Place to Sell California Chrome to Japan

Te California Chrome Syndicate has reached an agreement with the JS Company of Japan to purchase California Chrome, subject to the Japanese government’s quarantine and exportation requirements being met, Taylor Made Stallions announced Nov. 20. As part of the agreement, the California Chrome Syndicate has the frst right of refusal if the 8-year-old California Chrome son of Lucky Pulpit is ever sold. Upon retirement from breeding, he can live out the remainder of his life at Taylor Made. Owners Perry and Denise Martin will continue to participate in California Chrome’s breeding career in Japan. “We were approached by representatives of the buyer, and being that California Chrome is owned by a 50-share syndicate, the ofer was presented to the shareholders for a vote,” said Duncan Taylor, president and CEO of Taylor Made. “Ultimately, the results were in favor of moving forward with the sale. “California Chrome is the best horse we have ever owned, and he will now have the opportunity to have ofspring performing in three diferent countries. California Chrome is a very special horse and means a lot to not only the team members of Taylor Made but to the thousands of fans he has across the country.” Bred in California by Perry Martin and Steve Coburn out of the Not for Love mare Love the Chase, California Chrome stood for $35,000 this year. California Chrome, Horse of the Year in 2014 and 2016, and the richest Kentucky Derby winner in history, won seven grade 1 races—the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), Preakness Stakes (G1), TVG Pacifc Classic Stakes (G1), Dubai World Cup (G1), Santa Anita Derby (G1), Awesome Again Stakes (G1), and Hollywood Derby (G1T), and retired with earnings of $14,752,650. California Chrome was also two-time California-bred Horse of the Year, along with other state-bred titles. Te most accomplished horse from the A.P. Indy sire line, California Chrome bred 473 mares in his frst three books at Taylor Made Stallions. His frst crop of yearlings sold this year, topped by a $325,000 purchase. California Chrome also stood the Southern Hemisphere breeding seasons in 2017 and 2018 in Chile at Sumaya Stud.

NewsBits EQUINE MRI SUCCESSFULLY FUNDED An equine standing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) facility will soon be in place at Santa Anita to help diagnose equine injuries. The Southern California Equine Foundation (SCEF) announced Nov. 19 that the fundraising campaign for the MRI facility has been successful. “We are in the process now of arranging for the full operation of the new MRI by early in the upcoming Santa Anita season,” said Karen Klawitter, CEO for SCEF. “We are very pleased to have received the support of so many individuals and organizations in the sport.” The funding was achieved through leadership pledges from the Dolly Green Research Foundation and the Oak Tree Charitable Foundation. Donations have been received from Del Mar Thoroughbred Club; Los Alamitos Race Course; California Thoroughbred Trainers; California Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Foundation; breeder and owner John Harris; veterinarians Vince Baker, Melinda Blue, and Ryan Carpenter; and many more individual owners, trainers, and supporters. The Stronach Group provided $500,000 in funding for the new positron emission tomography (PET) scan facility also being added to Santa Anita, as well as infrastructure to enable the installation of the new MRI, which will complement the SCEF’s Imaging Center. The MRI’s proven technology has been in use elsewhere previously, whereby the horse is standing while scanned. It will be an essential diagnostic element to protect the safety and welfare of racehorses going forward.

AUERBACH RETIRES FROM CHRB

Golden Gate Fields’ El Camino Real Derby is one of three races nationwide that can earn a horse a berth in the Preakness Stakes (G1). The Maryland Jockey Club has announced a series called “Win Today, See You in May” that includes berths to several stakes on Preakness weekend at Pimlico Race Course. Any horse nominated to the Triple Crown who wins the El Camino Real Derby, the Federico Tesio Stakes at Laurel in Maryland, or the Oaklawn Invitational Stakes in Arkansas will receive a berth in the May 16 Preakness. Golden Gate’s

San Francisco Mile (G3T) will qualify the winner for the Dixie Stakes (G2T) on turf for 3-year-olds and up on the Preakness undercard. Winners of these qualifying races will have their nomination, starter, and entry fees waived to the stakes in which they earn berths. The Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2), Maryland Sprint (G3), Pimlico Special (G3), Searching Stakes, and Hilltop Stakes are other stakes in which horses can earn berths around the country, though not via any stakes in California.

Madeline Auerbach, who has served nearly six years as a commissioner on the California Horse Racing Board, announced her retirement from the board Nov. 11. Appointed to the board in 2014, she had served as vice chair for the past three years, and her current appointment had been for Madeline a term through Jan. 1, 2022. Auerbach The CHRB is undergoing several other changes. Rick Baedeker, the CHRB executive director, has announced that he plans to retire, and longtime assistant executive director Jacqueline Wagner retired Nov. 7. Gov. Gavin Newsom this year has appointed Dr. Greg Ferraro, Oscar Gonzales, and Wendy Mitchell to the CHRB board. Throughout her tenure on the board, Auerbach served on the Medication, Safety and Welfare Committee, initially as vice chair and then as chair. She has bred and raced numerous top runners, many of them California-breds, and has been instrumental in the development of Unusual Heat as a perennial leading California sire. She also founded the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) in 2007 to raise money for Thoroughbred aftercare. “During the decades I have been involved in the horse racing industry, my work has centered on doing what is best for these amazing animals,” Auerbach said. “I want to thank Gov. Jerry Brown for appointing me to the board and allowing me to do so.”

California-bred Bettor Trip Nick upset a feld of six to capture the $63,800 Golden Nugget Stakes at Golden Gate Fields Nov. 9. In doing so, he became the frst stakes winner for California sire Boat Trip. Catalino Martinez rode 15-1 Bettor Trip Nick for trainer WilBettor Trip Nick liam Delia, who owns the gelding with Gary Oetman and Ray Pagano. Bettor Trip Nick broke frst in the six-furlong Golden Nugget and was never headed, defeating fellow Cal-bred Doc Tommy by a half-length in 1:09.35. Favored Fore Left fnished third. Te Running Horse Equine Training Center bred Bettor Trip Nick, a 2-year-old out of the In Excess mare Bettor Knot. Bettor Trip Nick was winning his third race in four starts, with one second. Boat Trip stands for $2,500 at Special T Toroughbreds in Temecula. He is a son of Harlan’s Holiday—Turning Wheel, by Seeking the Gold. Boat Trip won the 2012 Tsunami Slew Stakes and 2013 Hollywood Turf Express Handicap, and he fnished second in the 2013 Eddie D Stakes (G3T), and earned a career total of $268,410.

Pee Wee Reese Despite valiant efforts by many people, California-bred Pee Wee Reese had to be euthanized in late October as the result of a fetlock injury suffered Oct. 12 at San Luis Rey Downs. The horse underwent successful surgery, but owner/breeder Nick Alexander said that after Pee Wee Reese did well for several days, his condition deteriorated. A son of Tribal Rule—Bluegrass Belle, by Unbridled’s Song, Pee Wee Reese most recently had won the Sept. 27 Eddie D Stakes (G2T). Trained by Phil D’Amato, he also captured this year’s Sensational Star Stakes, 2018 Joe Hernandez Stakes, and 2017 American Stakes (G3T) and had earned $532,901.

Wise Rachel Wins Pike Place Dancer Wise Rachel, a California-bred daughter of English Channel, scored in the $75,300 Pike Place Dancer Stakes at Golden Gate Fields Oct. 26. Ridden by Alejandro Gomez, Wise Rachel ran last early in the one-mile turf event, swung wide for the stretch drive, and defeated favored Te Adrie Factor by a half-length in 1:38.99. Quinn Howey trains Wise Rachel for owner Allen Aldrich, who purchased the flly for $7,000 at the 2018 Barretts yearling and mixed sale. Richard Barton Enterprises bred Wise Rachel from the Smarty Jones mare Wise Impression. Wise Rachel was winning her second race in four starts, having

After suffering complications from an infection, California sire Suances had to be euthanized at the age of 22, reported Rancho Temescal co-owner Tim Cohen. The stallion was a favorite at the Piru farm, the Cohen family having owned him since midway through his racing career. Tim’s father, Jed, bought Suances privately in France in 2000, and the colt then won the Emirates Airline Prix Jean Prat (G1) at Chantilly. Trained by Darrel Vienna in this country, Suances captured the 2002 San Francisco Breeders’ Cup Mile Handicap (G2T) and Dallas Turf Cup Handicap. Both of those victories occurred after Suances returned from having suffered a serious tendon injury in his stall. Giles Pritchard-Gordon bred the son of Most Welcome— Prayer Wheel, by High Line, in Great Britain. Suances stood at Rancho Temescal and had progeny earnings of more than $3 million, getting such runners as stakes winner Feisty Suances.

CALIFORNIA-BREDS BRING SIX FIGURES IN KENTUCKY A California-bred yearling and two California-bred broodmares each sold for six fgures during the fall sales in Kentucky. A Cal-bred yearling colt by Munnings brought $260,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October yearling sale. Linda Madsen bred the colt, who is out of the unraced Medaglia d’Oro mare Seaside Treasure. JCM purchased the youngster out of the Ballysax Bloodstock consignment. At Fasig-Tipton’s November sale, Cal-bred Hot Autumn, in foal to Goldencents, sold for $150,000. H & E Ranch bred the 4-year-old daughter of Tiz Wonderful—Shesoprovocative, by Orientate, and Coteau Grove Farms purchased her from the Oxmoor Sales consignment. Hot Autumn fnished second in the 2018 La Brea Stakes (G1) and earned a total of $163,125. Cal-bred Infamed, in foal to Tapiture, sold for $170,000 at the Keeneland November sale to Glen Hill Farm from the Paramount Sales consignment. Madeline Auerbach, Barry Abrams, and Sonny Pais bred the 9-year-old daughter of Unusual Heat—Little Hottie, by Afternoon Deelites.

California-bred M One Rife and jockey Mike Smith took the lead early in the seven-furlong Malibu and drew off to score by 21⁄2 lengths in 1:21.05. SecM One Rife ond and third were Misremembered and Papa Clem, who went on to become California-based stallions. M One Rife, a gelded son of One Man Army—Leanessa, by Bertrando, had already captured that year’s Real Good Deal Stakes and placed in two other added-money events. Headley had trained M One Rife’s sire, dam, and broodmare sire. M One Rife ultimately won fve of 22 races and earned $535,142.

LETTHEBIGHOSSROLL, the champion California-bred sprinter of 1991, continued to add to his laurels when he won the $50,000 George Warwick Handicap at Bay Meadows Dec. 10, 1994. Favored at 4-5 against four rivals, the 6-year-old gelding broke frst for jockey Fernando Valenzuela and led at every call. He defeated Ackachina’s Day by a length, with Quite Extrordinary third, stopping the timer in 1:08.99 for six furlongs. Letthebighossroll Bob Baffert trained Letthebighossroll for owners Mike Pegram and Bob Roth. Cardiff Stud Farm bred the son of Flying Paster—Moonlight Jig, by Jig Time. California-bred QUICKEN TREE won his third two-mile stakes in New York when he took the Display Handicap at Aqueduct for the second time Dec. 6, 1969. The 6-year-old gelding stormed home by seven lengths as the favorite under jockey Fernando Alvarez. Quicken Tree completed the two miles Quicken Tree in 3:20 1⁄5, setting a stakes record, and his time was only a second off Kelso’s American record for the distance. Quicken Tree had previously won the Display in 1967 and the two-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup in 1968. Lou Rowan bred and owned Quicken Tree, a son of Royal Orbit—Mother Wit, by Counterpoint. Te California stallion roster has many new and exciting choices for 2020, and following the Breeders’ Cup, another name was added to the list—Om. Second to Belvoir Bay in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T), Om was part of a Peter Miller-trained Exacta in the race. Te Sareen family has campaigned Om throughout his career and will stand him at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga for $7,500. Dan Hendricks purchased the son of Munnings—Rare Cat, by Tabasco Cat, for $125,000 at the 2014 Barretts March 2-year-old sale and trained him for the frst part of his career. Miller conditioned Om this season. Om won the 2015 Del Mar Derby (G2T), Twilight Derby (G2T), and Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes (G2T) and 2018 Tunder Road Stakes (G3T). He placed in 13 other graded stakes, including twice second in the Turf Sprint, and he earned a total of $1,354,731. It had been earlier announced that Sir Prancealot would be new to California in 2020, as the stallion will shuttle from Australia, where he has been recently standing. Sir Prancealot (Tamayuz— Mona Em, by Catrail) will stand at Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel, and in October the farm announced that his stud fee will be $15,000. Winner of Doncaster’s Flying Childers Stakes (G2) in England in 2012, Sir Prancealot frst stood in Ireland. Some of his good runners have done well in

The glaring spotlight that has been shining on racing this year has prompted track owners and managers to institute laudable new safety measures to protect the sport’s most treasured asset—the Toroughbred. Te California Toroughbred Foundation has had—and continues to have—the health and welfare of Toroughbreds and other horses on and of the racetrack as its focus for many decades. Evolving from origins in the 1940s with Carleton F. Burke among the founders, the Foundation has promoted this through the education of veterinarians and support of crucial research. Veterinarians today are being drawn in greater numbers to practicing in equine areas other than Toroughbreds. Tis fact alone underscores the importance of our main educational eforts: • Two scholarships annually for undergraduates at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine; candidates must demonstrate an interest in working with horses, preferably Toroughbreds. Te Southern California Equine Foundation (the veterinary organization) and Dolly Green Foundation help support these scholarships. • Te Louis R. Rowan Fellowship in Equine Studies at Davis for a graduate student pursuing research in equine areas, especially those areas that beneft Toroughbreds. • A scholarship at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona for a veterinary student with interest in pursuing a career with horses, with an emphasis on Toroughbreds. Another aspect of our work is the preservation of California’s rich heritage of horses and racing in the Carleton F. Burke Memorial Library, housed at the CTBA ofces in Arcadia. Te library is a unique source of research material, both current and historical, and is the largest collection of equine publications in the West. Much valuable history would be lost without its existence and assets. It is open to the public. As a 501(c)(3) non-proft organization, the Foundation relies on donations from generous individuals, as well as racetracks and racing organizations. We put your donation toward work that has become more and more crucial while you have the opportunity for tax advantages. Let’s move forward together for the beneft of the sport and animals we love.

Te Juvenile gave Barton his frst stakes win since bursting onto the scene with his Barton Toroughbreds just two years ago, and the Nishes have been trying to win this race for years. Tap Back gives Barton Thoroughbreds its frst stakes win with an impressive six-length score in the Golden State Juvenile

of Einstein—Tap Tap Ur It, by Tapit, won for the second time in four career starts, boosting his earnings to $163,100. “Te frst stakes win really means a lot to us—our entire family, our farm, our trainers, the list goes on,” Kate Barton said. “To win with a horse where we bred the foal and had the privilege to keep and race him, it really means the world.” Tap Tap Ur It won her fnal career start for Richard Barton, taking a maiden claiming event at Los Alamitos before retiring to the Barton broodmare band. Her second foal, Tap It Champ, by Champ Pegasus, was a winner last year; Tap Back is her third foal. Tap Back broke his maiden frst out at Del Mar in August, beating state-breds by 11⁄2 lengths as a 15-1 surprise. ick Alexander thinks so highly of Just Grazed Me that he might have considered her for a Breeders’ Cup race. Instead, the California-bred 4-year-old flly had a chance to strut her stuf before a large Breeders’ Cup audience in the $101,404 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes (G3T) Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.

Santa Anita carded the Maddy as the opener on the main Breeders’ Cup card. Just Grazed Me, bred and owned by Alexander, defeated three fellow Cal-breds, four Kentucky-breds, and a Florida-bred in the 51⁄2-furlong turf stakes. She was making just her second start in graded company. Second in the 2018 Torrey Pines Stakes (G3) on the dirt at Del Mar, she was coming of a victory against state-breds in the Oct. 12 California Distaf Handicap over the same distance and surface as the Maddy. Tat extra half-furlong sometimes can make the diference, and several horsemen had expressed pleasure at races be-

ing carded at 51⁄2 furlongs. Trainer Mark Glatt had felt it helped Castle capture the Oct. 19 California Flag Handicap. In the Maddy, Eastern invader Girls Know Best went of as the narrow favorite over Just Grazed Me. Alexander pointed out that Girls Know Best specializes at fve furlongs, rarely winning at 51⁄2 furlongs while Kentan Road, trained by John Sadler, “has brilliant speed,” Alexander said. Sure enough, Kentan Road grabbed the early lead, carving out fractions of :22.71 and :45.22. “I hate to say it worked out just the way we planned it,” said Alexander. “Our horse can sit right behind the lead. All of a sudden around that turn, she made a move.” With Geovanni Franco aboard, Just Grazed Me ran seventh early, moved up to ffth, and rallied in the stretch while three wide. Another Cal-bred, Apache Princess, was making up ground from even farther back, and Just Grazed Me

defeated her by 11⁄4 lengths in 1:02.94. Ippodamia’s Girl, a Kentucky-bred half sister to Cal-bred grade 1 winner Georgie Boy, fnished third. “She’s coming from farther behind with a bigger kick,” said trainer Phil D’Amato. “She’s just fnding her groove right now. It’s really nice to see a flly develop like this and hopefully have a bright future ahead of her.” Just Grazed Me is another in the seemingly endless line of Alexander homebreds by his stallion Grazen. She is out of the Cuvee mare Fairway Road. Alexander said maybe he will consider Just Grazed Me for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) next year. She has never failed to earn a check, winning six of her 10 starts, with three seconds and one third. Te winning purse from the Maddy, named for the California state senator who championed favorable legislation for the racing and breeding industry, raised Just Grazed Me’s earnings to $394,332.

Te highest of them all is California Chrome at $14,752,650, a number that will take a very special racehorse to topple. From Lava Man to Snow Chief, these millionaires have been lauded as the mighty standouts of the California breeding program, their names etched into history.

But what about the horses that have fallen just short of that mark? Sixteen Calbreds have earned more than $900,000 but failed to reach the next milestone. Tis is the frst of a two-part series highlighting those 16 horses, featuring the seven Cal-bred fllies and mares that made their marks on the track without passing the $1 million benchmark. With $989,185 to her name, HOUSE OF FORTUNE came just over $10,815 short of making a million dollars. Te daughter of Free House—So Fortunate, 32

House of Fortune went on to be California’s champion 2-year-old female after winning the $125,000 California Cup Juvenile Fillies and the $80,550 Cover Gal Stakes before running third in the $349,500 Hollywood Starlet (G1). At 3 she shipped to Oaklawn Park to win the $200,000 Fantasy Stakes (G2) over future grade 1 winners Island Sand and Stellar Jayne, then added the $182,875 Hollywood Breeders’ Cup Oaks (G2). House of Fortune won the $99,300 Cat’s Cradle Handicap at 4 and then the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Ocala Breeders’ Sales Distaf Stakes at 5, scoring by 61⁄2 lengths at Gulfstream Park. Tat was the last start of her career. “I guess winning a half-million dollar race would have to be my favorite,” said Zetcher. House of Fortune went through the Keeneland November sales ring in 2006 but did not meet her reserve and was bid in at $475,000.

“We still have her,” Zetcher said of the 18-year-old mare. “She’s winding down now, but we have some of her runners. She was always a nice horse.” House of Fortune has produced four winners from fve starters, including grade 1-placed winner Tirteen Squared. Both UNZIP ME, at earnings of $959,228, and her granddam, SOVIET PROBLEM, at $905,546, make the list. John Harris’ Harris Farms and Donald Valpredo bred and raced both mares, with Unzip Me also running in partnership for Marin Jones and Per Antonsen. Soviet Problem was a tour de force on the racetrack, winning 15 of 20 starts and fnishing second three times, including a heartbreaking head loss in the 1994 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Churchill Downs. In all she won 10 stakes races, including the grade 3 Laurel Dash Stakes in Maryland. Soviet Problem, “was one of the outstanding sprinters of her time,” said Harris. Valpredo remembers a lot of Soviet Problem’s career starts, including her debut. “One of my frst recalls on Soviet Prob-

lem is what a gorgeous young flly she was turning into,” he said. “In her frst start at 2 in October of 1992, I called her trainer, Greg Gilchrist, and asked if he liked her chances. He replied, ‘You can bet the north forty.’ I didn’t, but she did win with authority.” From that fve-length maiden victory, Soviet Problem only grew quicker. “Her racing career was amplifed by her pure, raw speed, as she ran the third quarter like the frst,” Valpredo said. “Te effort at Churchill, where she ran an extremely game second in the Sprint, was a true highlight. She was simply a superb sprinter and aforded us a lot of thrills and happy moments.” Five-time California champion Soviet Problem, by Moscow Ballet—Nopro Blama, by Dimaggio, produced six winners from seven starters, including the Arazi flly Escape With Me, who won only once in six starts, but then produced the City Zip flly Unzip Me. With 14 wins, four seconds, and four thirds in 25 starts, SOVIET PROBLEM Unzip Me was a Santa Anita downhill turf sprint specialist. She broke her maiden on debut at Del Mar in 2008, then in 2010 reeled of wins in the Irish O’Brien Stakes, Las Cienegas Handicap (G3T), Great Lady M. Stakes, Royal North Stakes (G3T) at Woodbine, and the Senator Ken Maddy Handicap. She fnished third in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G2T) at Churchill Downs. In 2011, she added the Monrovia (G3T), Clocker’s Corner Handicap, WARREN’S VENEDA Daisycutter Handicap, and John Deere California Cup Distaf Stakes. In her fnal start Unzip Me won the Wishing Well Stakes. “While also very talented, Unzip Me also had an early presence,” Valpredo said. “As a just-turned 2-year-old, Harris Farms manager Per Antonsen thought she was exceptional and asked to buy in, as she was the classiest flly he had been on. Her race record proved that. She has the potential to be a very special broodmare, as her runners are proving to have her raw speed.” While Unzip Me was wickedly fast and clearly talented, Soviet Problem maintains a special place in John Harris’ heart. “Unzip Me was certainly a nice mare, but I think Soviet Problem could have outrun her,” he said. “I think Unzip Me may end up being the better broodmare.” Unzip Me’s frst two foals to race are winners on the grass. Te Benjamin C. Warren homebred WARREN’S VENEDA,

by Afrmative—More Cal Bread, by Flying Continental, won eight times in 29 starts, with four seconds and seven thirds. She earned $932,112 and became a grade 1 winner with fve stakes wins overall. Craig Lewis trained the chestnut mare, who took the $92,500 Paseana Stakes, the $200,750 Santa Maria Stakes (G2), and the $400,250 Santa Margarita Stakes (G1) in succession in 2015. She followed that with a third-place efort in the grade 1 Vanity Stakes. Her only foal to race so far, the 2-year-old Clubhouse Ride flly Warren’s Showtime, was a winner earlier this year. Like House of Fortune, Cal-bred RIVER’S PRAYER scored her biggest win when shipping to Florida for the $500,000 Princess Rooney Handicap (G1) at Calder in 2007. Te strapping gray River’s Prayer, by Devon Lane—Cozzy Flyer, by Cozzene, won nine of 16 starts for earnings of $921,958. Paula Capestro trained the Vessels Stallion Farm-bred mare and owned her in partnership with Martin Racing $905,546 Stable and Bantry Farms. “She was defnitely easy in some respects, in that I could walk in without a halter and she was fne,” Capestro recalled. “But she was a little hard on her groom. We had to work on her feet quite a bit because she had sensitive feet, but for the most part she was a wonderful horse.” In 2007 River’s Prayer reeled of an unbeaten season with victories in the $133,750 Irish O’Brien $932,112 Stakes, the $108,700 Las Cienegas Handicap (G3T), the $97,375 Great Lady M. Stakes, the Princess Rooney, and the $200,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3). Te Princess Rooney victory, which came at the expense of Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint heroine Shaggy Mane and future Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Maryfeld, almost didn’t happen. “Te Florida race was a huge efort on the part of everyone,” Capestro said. “When we arrived, the weather was storming with lightning and thunder. It was so hot and humid, and River’s Prayer wasn’t used to the thunderstorms that sounded like they were breaking right over our heads. Te groom stayed with her in the stall 24/7 and went through a big efort to cool her down. Ten she’d lift her head and plump up, and you knew you were in the game.” Injury kept River’s Prayer from the Breeders’ Cup that year, which Capestro called, “a tough pill to swallow.” Te mare sold to Stonestreet Toroughbred Holdings for $1.5 million that November and has gone on to produce four winners from six starters. “She was a pretty cool horse,” Capestro said, then added, “I loved her. She was an amazing animal.” Recently retired trainer Dan Hendricks is no stranger to top class Cal-breds. In addition to training Brother Derek to win the Santa Anita Derby (G1) in 2006, Hendricks was the man behind classy Cal-bred fllies Smooth Player ($760,496), Private Persuasion TEDDY’S PROMISE ($502,046), and Bountiful Native ($468,475). But the flly that frst put him on the map was Martin and Pam Wygod’s FEVERISH, who earned $908,983. Te daughter of Pirate’s Bounty—Blonde Fever, by Flying Paster, won 12 of 42 starts, with 13 second-place eforts. “She never ran worse than ffth,” Hendricks said. “She never missed a check.” Feverish made 13 starts as a 3-year-old in 1998, but didn’t win her frst stakes race until the E. B. Johnston at Fairplex Park in September 1999. From there she added the Las Madrinas Handicap and the California Cup Matron Handicap. At 5 she got a signature win in the $150,000 Bayakoa Handicap (G2), one of her four stakes victories that season. At 6 she fnished third in the grade 1 Milady Breeders’ Cup Handicap. 34

Te daughter of Salt Lake—Braids and Beads, by Capote, was a homebred for the couple and ran for trainer Ron Ellis. “She was not only a tremendously fast flly, but really beautiful,” Ellis said. “She had about as beautiful a body as you can ever fnd on a flly.” Teddy’s Promise broke her maiden at Hollywood Park in 2010, then added an allowance optional claimer before rounding into form late in 2011. She won three stakes, in$906,397 cluding the $300,000 La Brea Stakes (G1) as a 16-1 surprise. At 4 she added the Time to Leave Stakes and the $92,200 Kalookan Queen Stakes, the latter by 51⁄4 lengths. At 5, she won the Santa Monica Stakes (G2). “She was a really nice flly in the barn, but really tough to gallop and train,” Ellis said. “Works-wise she always wanted to go as fast as she could and ran hard. I think because she wouldn’t relax in her workouts, she couldn’t stretch out. But she wasn’t bred to go past seven furlongs anyway.” Teddy’s Promise, California’s champion 3-year-old female of 2011, was ultimately sold to Japan as part of a private package deal. irginia Haaland always supported husband Paul’s love of horse racing; they both hail from similar backgrounds and childhoods that included trips to the track. But when a California stallion named Prospect Park helped Paul during his battle with brain

cancer, Virginia became an even deeper believer. “Te miracle about all this horse stuf,” she said, “is that it would be a much heavier experience for him if he didn’t have this thing to think about and be excited about.” Tat “thing” is standing Prospect Park at Harris Farms in Coalinga. Te well-bred horse marks the Haalands’ frst foray into stallion ownership, although they have been partners in both racehorses and broodmares before. With horses on the farm and at the track, their PVNC Stables— named for Paul, Virginia, and daughters Nora and Charlotte—is an ever-evolving operation and a family afair. When Paul and Virginia met on a ski trip to Mammoth, memories of the racetrack ran in both of their minds. Paul’s father taught his 6-year-old son to read the Daily Racing Form while the family stayed in Solana Beach, enjoying the ocean in the morning and the Del Mar races in the afternoon. Virginia hailed from Los Angeles, where she was exposed to racing at Santa Anita. “It was Paul’s passion, but it has become a family thing,” she explained. Te couple’s daughters, ages 10 and 8, have already learned how to bet. “It’s pretty cute,” Virginia admitted. “It’s been a fun thing to share as a family.” As the children got older, the couple was able to invest in the sport as owners for the frst time. “We got involved in both racehorse partnerships and

breeding partnerships,” Paul said. Tey were involved with multiple stakes-placed California-bred Takeo Squared, a son of Square Eddie who was retired after running second by just a neck in the $100,351 California Cup Turf Sprint Stakes last January. Tey were also part of the Uptowncharlybrown Stud syndicate that campaigned stakes-placed winner Kelli’s Smile. “But it seemed we wanted to do a little more on the breeding side,” said Paul. Opportunity knocked when Prospect Park was offered at the 2018 Keeneland November sale. Te Haalands were able to buy him privately before the sale in a deal brokered by Chad Schumer. Te horse was everything they had been looking for in a stallion prospect. Pam and Martin Wygod’s homebred Prospect Park, a son of Tapit—Quiet Romance, by Bertrando, was well regarded even before his debut. His dam never raced, but she produced Santa Anita Oaks (G1) winner Silent Sighs and dual grade 2 winner and grade 1-placed Proposed. Propsect Park is another in a line of classy runners for the mare, who was out of multiple stakesplaced Cal-bred Brisa de Mar. t’s not uncommon for a horse’s lower legs to swell, especially if the horse has been confned after a period of activity or strenuous exercise. If he has had a hard workout and then is put in a confned area where he doesn’t have room to move around very much, his legs might swell. Some horses’ legs swell just from inactivity; if you bring them into a stall or pen from a pasture situation, their legs stock up overnight.

Te swelling might only involve the pastern and fetlock joint areas, or it may extend up the leg to the knees or hocks. Sometimes called stagnation edema, this type of swelling is painless and generally not damaging to the horse though it might inhibit freedom of movement of the fetlock joint until the swelling subsides with exercise and improved blood circulation. Confning a horse whose system is accustomed to freedom of movement is probably the most common cause of stocking up. Te horse, by nature, is a very mobile and restless animal. Under natural conditions, he is almost always on the move, traveling even while grazing. His normal pattern of activity is eat, rest, then eat again. Even at night he is active, grazing or eating, resting only for short intervals. He grazes on the move, seeking the best grass. Circulation in the horse’s legs depends on muscle activity and on the expansion and contraction of the feet as the horse travels. It’s easy for the circulatory system to supply blood to the lower leg, but getting it back up the leg is harder. His body depends on movement for proper function; most of his veins are located between masses of muscles. As the muscles contract during activity, they squeeze the veins, aiding return of blood to the heart. Horses have no muscles in their lower legs, just bones and tendons. In the foot, the frog acts like a little pump at the end of the line. Each time the horse puts weight on a foot and the hoof walls expand, the sole fattens. When the foot is lifted, the

walls spring back, the sole returns to normal position, and the frog pushes the blood on its way. Movement— continually loading and unloading the feet—keeps the circulatory system efcient, which in turn maintains the health of feet and legs. Many horses today are confned in a stall or small pen eating hay, grain, or pellets they can consume while standing still. A horse might be immobile for hours at a time while his heart is pumping blood down to his feet and getting very little help in its return. Inactivity can produce temporary edema in the lower legs, swelling resulting from the leaking of fuid into the spaces between the cells due to increased capillary pressure (from the blood being “backed up” in the lower legs). Often just the hind legs are affected, since circulation tends to be poorer there. But front legs bear more weight and are subject to more concussion, and if a horse has been worked hard and long on hard ground or subjected to extra stress on the front legs, you might fnd all four legs stocked up. Dr. Scott McClure, of Midwest Equine Surgery and Sports Medicine in central Iowa, says there are several categories of stocking up. Horses accustomed to being turned out, with lots of room to self-exercise, are routinely moving around and rarely standing still for very long. “If those horses are brought into a stall overnight, unable to move around, and they are not used to it, they may stock up,” McClure said. “In that situation they may always stock up, but it’s not a health issue. and does not involve the whole lower leg. An infected area, or swelling from a kick or a blow, will often have somewhat abrupt borders, whereas the stocked up leg will resemble a teardrop, with the largest area at the bottom, and the enlargement gradually blends into the upper part of the leg. Te stocked up leg will also be cool. Heat in a swollen leg is indicative of infection or infammation from strain and injury. Other clues can help you tell the difference between simple stocking up and swelling due to injury. Te flling in the stocked up leg is somewhat soft, with some give to it. If you press the area with your thumb or fnger for a few seconds, it will leave a dent when you release the pressure. It will take a few seconds for the dent to disappear.
