Lip Tattoos Phasing Out With the requirement from Te Jockey Club to microchip all Toroughbreds for registration, lip tattoos will soon become obsolete. Te Toroughbred Racing Protective Bureau has announced the introduction of a digital tattoo system, scheduled for full implementation by Jan. 1, 2020. Te Association of Racing Commissioners International passed a model rule last summer. It requires racing secretaries to ensure that the registration certifcates for all Toroughbred horses foaled in 2018 or later have a digital tattoo prior to entry in a race. Te rule is efective by Jan. 1, 2020. Te Jockey Club Technology Services developed the software for the digital tattoo. “In essence a digital tattoo is an electronic validation of the identity of a horse performed by a trained TRPB technician,” said a TRPB press release. “Te technician will use a scanner to read the horse’s microchip, and the microchip number will hyperlink to electronic registration information.
“After fully examining the markings and foal photos contained in the horse’s electronic record, the technician will confrm the identity of the horse standing in front of him or her and upload a selection of digital pictures documenting the horse’s markings to Te Jockey Club’s database. Te TRPB technician will then place an electronic embossment on the face photo of the horse and a digital stamp on the electronic certifcate of registration. “Tis digital tattoo will indicate that the TRPB has verifed the identity of the horse and uploaded updated digital photographs to the breed registry’s database.” Te current practice of branding horses on the inside upper lip will be discontinued at the end of 2019. In addition to Te Jockey Club requiring microchipping for registration, the California Horse Racing Board has passed a rule requiring all horses to be microchipped that are on the grounds of a California track. Any horse not microchipped will not be allowed to race.
LYM NAMED SANTA ANITA RACING SECRETARY Steve Lym, previously director of racing and racing secretary at Woodbine in Canada, took over as Santa Anita’s vice president of racing and racing secretary in January. He replaced Rick Hammerle. Lym grew up in the Thoroughbred business. He has served on the Breeders’ Cup selection panel and is also involved with the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities’ World’s Best Racehorse Ranking Committee and the Jockey Club of Canada’s Graded Stakes Committee. “We think Steve’s overall experience is going to prove invaluable,” said Tim Ritvo, chief operating offcer for The Stronach Group, which owns Santa Anita. “In his position at Woodbine, he was basically dealing with a year-round racing dynamic, which will serve him well here at Santa Anita.”

Three Cal-bred daughters of Lady Railrider competed side by side in the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint: (from left) third-place Fiery Lady (5-year-old by Unusual Heat), Halo Darlin (6-year-old by Lucky Pulpit), and Pulpit Rider (4-year-old by Lucky Pulpit)
TOC ADDRESSES WORKERSÕ COMP INCREASE Beginning Jan. 1, per-start workers’ compensation fees rose from $100 to $106. These fees are automatically deducted from owners’ paymaster accounts every time they start a horse. To offset that increase, the Thoroughbred Owners of California board voted unanimously to increase guaranteed participation purses by $6 per start. In addition to the workers’ compensation increase, at the request of Golden Gate Fields, the TOC board voted unanimously to increase the participation purse at the track from $225 to $300 per start to include increased costs for third-party Lasix administration and jockey fees. In Southern California, the purse participation payment is now $351 per start. Participation fees are paid to horses that do not earn a portion of the purse. They are also paid to ffth-place fnishers if their share of purse money is less than the corresponding guaranteed participation purse.

■ Shaman Ghost Gets First Foals
When racetrackers gathered at the Winners Foundation on the Santa Anita backstretch Jan. 15 to celebrate the life of Bob Fletcher, it was standing room only. Many people whose lives he touched spoke eloquently of how he helped them or loved ones overcome serious substance-abuse problems. Fletcher, himself in recovery, served as director of the Winners Foundation for more than 10 years. He stepped down after suffering a stroke in November 2016 and died Jan. 6. Fittingly, Bob’s All In, a horse that Gino Roncelli, president of the Winners Foundation, named for Fletcher, won a race at Golden Gate Fields a few hours after Fletcher’s passing. The late Lou Rowan created the Winners Foundation to help anyone in the racing industry cope with substance-abuse problems, as well as gambling problems and mental illnesses. It provides free assistance as well as meetings and counseling. Before joining the Winners Foundation, Fletcher worked for nearly 40 years at Santa Anita, primarily in the parking division. Fletcher never turned anyone away and was always available to listen and help. He knew that sometimes help had to be frm, especially for those who arrived on the Winners Foundation doorstep reluctantly. “We know they don’t want to be here, and that’s okay,” Fletcher once said. “We didn’t put you here. You put you here. We’re not telling you that you have to like being here. You just have to accept the fact that you need to be here. “Once we get them in here, then we really start to address the issue, which is how to live life.” Fletcher noted how fulflling it was when people turned their lives around. He acknowledged that not every story turned out perfectly, but his efforts went a long way toward getting people on the road to recovery.

John Harris welcomes California breeders to the Harris Farms’ stallion show
Harris Farms’ Stallion Show Harris Farms, which recently has combined management with Old English Rancho, held a stallion show Jan. 19 at its Coalinga facility. Te display of the many stallions gave breeders more insight as they plan their broodmare matings. “We have an impressive group of stallions that I think can make long-term positive impacts on the future of California breeding,” said John Harris, owner of Harris Farms, in his invitation to the show. “It is important that you take a look at the stallions in play for this season at our farm as well as others by seeing them in person vs. just looking at data.” Te show began with a video presentation of the stallions and the race records of their progeny, followed by lunch. Ten the attendees had the opportunity to meet the 11 stallions in person. “You’ll be able to assess what conformation type you like, and how that may best blend with your broodmare,” said Harris. “Some of our key staf members will be there to comment. While pedigrees, nicks, etc. may be important, there is nothing as key as seeing in person a sire you may be staking your mare’s future and your own racing success on.” Te day concluded back at the Harris Inn Restaurant for a reception and some remarks on the overall California breeding industry.

A Glimpse into Lucky Baldwin’s Santa Anita Among the historical publications in the California Toroughbred Foundation’s Carleton F. Burke Memorial Library are two souvenir books from the Los Angeles Racing Association, Santa Anita Park, seasons 1907-08 and 1908-09, its only two seasons of existence. Tey are for E. J. “Lucky” Baldwin’s short-lived racetrack, which was located where the Arcadia County Park and golf course now stand. Te introduction to the earlier book showed no restraint in heralding the track: “Te Opening of this new and most modern of all Race-courses in the far West is an event in the history of mid-winter racing in America. Situated in the midst of the most beautiful section of the entire State, it afords to the new visitor such Baldwin Baldwi in Santa S Anita souvenir programs a a vista of beauty as can be seen elsewhere only in the drive through the Duke of Richmond’s Park, approaching Goodwood, in England.” Te book profles Baldwin and ofcers and directors; has many photographs of Baldwin’s home, properties, and famous horses; ofers advertisements for a variety of products and businesses (including ostrich and pigeon farms); and gives conditions of the stakes races. Te Santa Anita Handicap, 11⁄4 miles, ofered a purse of $1,500 added. Te California Handicap, also at 11⁄4 miles, on the other hand, had a value of $7,500 guaranteed. Both were for 2-year-olds and up “at the time of closing.” Te library also has a similar book for Ascot Park, fourth season, 1906-07. Tis Los Angeles-area track operated from 1903 through 1907.

SUNSHINE LIGHTS UP SKY BY EMILY SHIELDS
Her career has always been a cut above. S Y Sky made an unusual frst start, winning the $200,000 Evening Jewel Stakes April 8, 2017. On that occasion, the debuting flly defeated two-time stakes winner Miss Sunset, who went on to be a grade 2 winner and grade 1-placed at Keeneland, by 51⁄2 lengths. S Y Sky then added a win in the $192,000 Melair Stakes. An allowance optional claiming score at Santa Anita set her up for the Fleet Treat Stakes at Del Mar. “She would have been favored in the Fleet Treat halfway through her 3-yearold season,” Alexander recalled. “She got badly hurt just galloping on the track at Del Mar where it was very deep. She tore a tendon, and we didn’t think she’d come back. We gave her a year.” S Y Sky, by Alexander’s own stallion Grazen out of the winning Sky Mesa mare Sky Marni, was of July 3, 2017, until Oct. 13, 2018, when she ran second in 24

A Nov. 29 allowance optional claiming win at Del Mar put her back on the winning path. In the Sunshine Millions, S Y Sky and jockey Joe Talamo burst right out to the lead, dueling with Queen Bee to You down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course. Te two mares ran gamely through the

Te race had an interesting footnote as the broodmare Lady Railrider, a multiple stakes winner by Ride the Rails, had her frst three foals go to the post. Pulpit Rider started as the number two, Halo Darlin as the three, and Fiery Lady drew post four. S Y Sky, an oversized chestnut flly that Alexander calls his “big girl,” now has fve wins in nine starts, with three seconds and a third for earnings of $457,320. “It was tempting to breed her when she got hurt,” said Alexander. “But she was so much fun as a racehorse I wanted to give her one last shot. Flavien Prat, who rode Spiced Perfection. “As soon as I asked her, she responded well and ran big.” In the stretch, Spiced Perfection passed rivals to win by 11⁄4 lengths in 1:23.54 for seven furlongs. Hot Autumn, ridden by Tyler Baze, looked like she would run third behind Emboldened, but she bravely came back on to nab second by a head. “She tried hard; she gave it her all,” said Baze. Hot Autumn was attempting the frst stakes of her career while Spiced Perfection was jumping from Cal-bred company into grade 1 competition. Spiced Perfection had already collected stakes trophies in the 2017 Generous Portion Stakes, 2018 Evening Jewel Stakes, and, most recently, in the Nov. 11 Betty Grable Stakes. “She’s a small, little flly, but she just seems to thrive wherever we put her,” said Mike Faber of Dare To Dream Stable, which owns Spiced Perfection. “We just fgured against 3-year-olds this was the time to take that shot for the graded Michael Faber, center right, leads the Dare To Dream winner’s stakes. Phil Lebherz, Alan Klein, and Rusty Brown bred Spiced Perfection in the name of Premier Toroughbreds. She is from the frst crop of California stallion Smiling Tiger, whom Lebherz and Klein raced, and out of the Pleasantly Perfect mare Perfect Feat. Te mare has also produced a year-younger stakes-winning full brother named Cruel Intention. Brian Koriner trains Spiced Perfection for Dare To Dream, which puts together partnerships of people from around the country. “She really did it on her own,” said Koriner. “Tis was her last shot against 3-year-old fllies. We almost ran at Golden Gate for $75,000 a month ago.” Koriner and Faber mentioned that an ofer of a half-million dollars had come in for Spiced Perfection not long before the La Brea. It was withdrawn because of her small stature. “Tat makes it sweeter,” said Faber. “Yeah, she’s small, but she’s already beaten all these other horses. What diference does it make? At this point, she’s already proven she can run. I’ve got a lot of 17-hand horses that can’t move.”

nyone who thinks Californians can’t handle cold weather should take a look at Solid Wager in the Jan. 19 Toboggan Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct. Te California-bred switched from the relatively balmy weather of his home state to frigid temperatures in New York to capture the second graded stakes win of his career. Winter had already grabbed New York by the time of the Toboggan, and a storm later hit the area with such a wind chill that Aqueduct had to cancel its Jan. 21 card. 18 and fnished third in an allowance optional claiming race at Santa Anita on New Year’s Day for trainer Peter Miller. Owner Gary Barber decided to send Solid Wager to New York and trainer Chris Englehart. “He shipped to us just after his last race at Santa Anita,” said Englehart. Te $97,900 Toboggan, a seven-furlong stakes on the dirt, drew fve horses. Multiple New York stakes winner Gold for the King was the 3-2 favorite as Solid Wager went of as the 5-1 third choice. Skyler’s Scramjet, winner of last year’s Tom Fool Handicap (G3), zipped to the lead with quick fractions of :22.75 for the frst quarter-mile and :45.81 for a halfmile. Solid Wager, ridden by Jose Lezcano, stayed well back in last down the backside. “He’s a very nice horse, and the race set up good for him,” said Lezcano. “Te frst quarter went fast, and after he was backing up a little, I asked him near the three-

He didn’t catch Skyler’s Scramjet until inside the fnal eighth, but once he did, he drew away to win by 11⁄2 lengths in 1:23.95. “I had watched a few replays, and it looked like he is more comfortable coming (of the pace),” said Lezcano. “He fnished strong.” Englehart praised Lezcano’s ride. “Jose put him in a perfect spot throughout,” the trainer said. “Coming into the race, we fgured there might be a lot of speed for him to chase down and Jose really worked out a good trip for him where he could stalk and get the victory.” Solid Wager ran so well that Englehart said the 8-year-old gelding’s next race could come in the March 9 Tom Fool at six furlongs. In addition to his Cary Grant victories, Solid Wager won the 2016 Midnight Lute Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita. He has 11 wins in 49 starts, with eight seconds and six thirds, for earnings of $804,935. FASIG-TIPTON RETURNS TO CALIFORNIA
Q: What role do you see Florida consignors playing? A: It is incumbent upon us to demonstrate the opportunity for horses to come from other locations, primarily Florida, to be a fantastic success by selling in California, as it has always been. Te 2-year-old consignors from Florida have been a big part of the California 2-year-old in training scene for the last 25 years. We’re going to need some trust and confdence from the Florida-based 2-year-old consignors to come to California and bring quality products. But critically important to us is also going to be the traditional California consignors. We’re not relying on any one segment to come to the sales. We need as many quality horses as we can have the opportunity to sell, and certainly there are folks that do a great job that are California consignors.
NEW SPIN ON AN OLD STANDARD
F
asig-Tipton, whose history in California dates back to the time Humphrey S. Finney and the company conducted the frst Louis B. Mayer dispersal in 1947, is partnering with Santa Anita on sales in California. First up will be a June 5 auction of 2-year-olds in training, followed by a Sept. 25 yearling sale, both to be held in Santa Anita’s picturesque walking ring.
Question: How did the partnership between Fasig-Tipton and Santa Anita come about after Boyd Browning the discontinuation of Barretts? Answer: Fasig-Tipton has had a long relationship and history of doing Toroughbred auctions in California. As a national sales company, we’ve always watched with interest the California marketplace. It’s a vital portion of our racing and Toroughbred industry. It’s one of the lynchpins in North American racing and the sales world. I’ve been a believer in the California marketplace for a long time, and coupled with that I’ve always thought that Santa Anita was the right location, particularly for the 2-year-old in training sale, for long-term success. Tis summer, after numerous discussions with Tim Ritvo and Te Stronach Group, we were able to structure something that made sense from everybody’s perspective. I think we’ve got a location that can be a win-win for everybody. 34
ANNE M. EBERHARDT
Boyd Browning, president and chief executive ofcer of Fasig-Tipton, recently talked to California Toroughbred about the company’s California plans, including the fulltime hire of trainer Mike Machowsky as its California representative.
Q: What role do you see California-breds playing in these sales? A: Cal-breds will be a vital part of both the 2-year-old and yearling sales. It is critical, both short term and long term, that we are able to sell the best Cal-breds available—especially in the yearling sale. Around the world, the market is strongest for the perceived “quality” oferings, and the California market is no diferent. Te support of California breeders is essential to building a successful marketplace. We’re going to need strong participation and support from the California-based owners and trainers. We’ve announced that Mike Machowsky is going to be our California representative, and I think Mike will be a valuable addition to the team. He knows the buyers and the sellers and has been very active with the breeders.
CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ February 2019 ❙ www.ctba.com
Q: What was behind the decision to have only one yearling sale? A: Given the size of the marketplace, I think it’s imperative to have one yearling sale, presenting the California crop to the buyers. We’re going to let you sort through them and fgure out which ones are appropriate. I think it’s very important to establish Santa Anita as the base and the home for yearling sales. I think the consolidation of the yearling sales should strengthen the upper end of the marketplace and hopefully the middle and lower portion of the marketplace. Tose horses will be cataloged alphabetically in a oneday sale. Te buyers will be able to identify which horses are the highest quality. We’re not going to label them as such. Q: What else will Fasig-Tipton bring to this venture? A: We’re trying to serve the marketplace and do things that make sense. We have made and will continue to make a serious commitment to do things right in California. I think we’ve added a strong person to start of with in Mike Machowsky. Te only way we know how to do things at Fasig-Tipton is frst class. We’re committed to doing this. I think if you look at our track record, when we make a business decision to do something, we’re going to embrace it and try to make it successful.
CTBA Trainer of the Year
NEVER MISSING A BEAT PHIL D’AMATO’S SMOOTH TRANSITION TO TRAINER OF THE YEAR BY GENE WILLIAMS
H
Try Phil D’Amato, one of the highest-profle trainers in recent years on the Southern California horse-racing circuit in spite of training on his own for a mere four years. Maybe “up-and-coming” is a bit of a stretch because, after all, for 10 years he was the right hand of Mike Mitchell, a major California Toroughbred conditioner who died in 2015 after a valiant battle against brain cancer. Trough those years D’Amato was a sort of trainer-in-waiting as Mitchell frst took him under his wing as an assistant in a relationship that grew into a fullblown near-father-son feel. Trough it all, Mitchell imparted invaluable information so that the transfer of reins from Mitchell to D’Amato when Mitchell retired in 2014 was seamless. D’Amato’s many feats since taking over from his esteemed friend and mentor have burnished Mitchell’s reputation even further. At the same time, it has brought his protégé to the forefront on the Southern California circuit. Among those feats has been a steady diet of major Trainer Phil D’Amato, right with jockey Tyler Baze, has become a familiar presence in the winner’s circle at Southern California tracks stakes victories with California-bred runners. Joining her as a potential standout in 2019 could be Pee Wee I think it’s going to be the mainstay to keep the California horse Reese, who is being groomed for a stakes-flled calendar in the racing program alive in the future. I like the way it’s going. We’re coming year. Enola Gray was retired at midyear 2018 and will be getting more and more top studs. Te purse money is good, and bred in Kentucky during the winter. Since she’s a daughter of Alexit’s really a good way for owners to not have to spend a fortune for ander’s highly successful stallion Grazen, the breeder must turn to a chance to make a small fortune.” another potential mate for the gray mare. 36

CTBA Trainer of the Year “Enola Gray was special, right from the get-go,” an appreciative D’Amato said. “Te way she broke her maiden frst time out (by 161⁄4 lengths) was ultra-impressive and caught everyone’s attention, and she blossomed steadily. She was a real nice stakes winner on the dirt, and when we put her on the grass, she just took it to the next level. Overall, she was a graded stakes winner in open company on the grass and a multiple stakes winner in Cal-bred company, and really a neat flly to be around.” D’Amato is appreciative of the role I’m a big believer in the Mitchell played in his career. When asked what it was like being a Mitchell protégé, Cal-bred and the Cal-bred D’Amato said, “He was a little brusque industry. I think it’s going and a little brash at times, but that was just to be the mainstay to keep his style. He was opinionated, and I think that’s one of the things you need to have as the California horse racing a trainer and go with it. program alive in the future.” “His owners got to know that side of — Phil D’Amato him. In fact, one of his owners named a horse after him – Mikeswayorthehiway. Mike was an expert horseman. He was able to train all kinds of horses with various styles. He wasn’t a cookie cutter-style trainer. I think that’s what made him a great horseman. Tat’s the key to success for any trainer—to have a versatile barn and to be able to train any kind of horse. “Tat’s one of the things Mike taught me. You need to treat every horse as an individual and formulate a training Amato trained Nick Alexander’s graded winner Enola Gray plan to help them utilize their guess we didn’t need Mike after all.’ Tat’s fullest potential.” Mitchell trained Grazen for Alexander. when we got to be friends. “Phil had gone through the racing proD’Amato’s connection to Alexander and Grazen goes back about 10 years, to a time gram at the University of Arizona and had when D’Amato was just “a young, skinny worked for some good trainers back East kid,” in Alexander’s words. Nonetheless, before coming to Mike. Recently, he has 38

picked up some Cal-breds from Andrew Molaskey and Old English Rancho. Both have provided D’Amato with winners. It certainly seems like a natural progression for the easygoing D’Amato to handle Cal-breds since he’s a Cal-bred himself, born and reared in San Pedro. He lives with his wife, Sherri, and children, Ryan, 10, and Jessica, 20. Both Sherri and Jessica lend an occasional hand to the business. During his stint with Mitchell, D’Amato helped with several major stakes winners for his boss, including Egg Drop, Kela, Jaycito, Star Over the Bay, and Romance Is Diane, as well as Grazen. Also, he was instrumental in helping Mitchell overtake Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally as alltime leading trainer at Del Mar. Hall of Famer Bob Bafert has since passed Mitchell. D’Amato gives Alexander much credit for helping make the transition from Mitchell as seamless as it was. “When Mike passed the baton to me, Nick was gracious enough to give me his horses to train, and we’ve had a lot of success on our own as well,” said D’Amato. “But Mike was still a major factor in all of that. Over those years with Mike, I got to know all of the clients and had good relations with them. Mike helped me to cultivate that. It really gave me a giant head start when I started to train on my own.” As bittersweet as the passing of the torch by Mitchell to D’Amato was for both of them, D’Amato gets a tip of the hat from Alexander for what he called “never missing a beat. People have seen his record and have seen what he can do. He is totally dedicated. He pretty much eats, sleeps, and breathes his barn and the horses. He doesn’t miss a thing. “He fnds what his horses can do best, and he’s realistic about where he can place them. You can trust him in his suggestions—drop the horse (in class), try grass, go up north. It’s not very often that when he says something I don’t say yes. Ups and downs are part of the business, but he has gotten us through all the downs so we can keep enjoying the ups.”

alifornians came together in all aspects of the January mixed sale. Te California Toroughbred Breeders Association stepped in to conduct it Jan. 16 at Fairplex in Pomona after the demise of Barretts. California-breds dominated the catalog and the high prices. And Californians made up most of the buyers and sellers. Not that people didn’t arrive from out of state. Buyers from such varied places as Utah, Massachusetts, Arizona, Nevada,

Texas, New Mexico, and even Canada were listed as purchasers. One Arizona buyer, Vicky Burnham, has ties to the CTBA. She worked for California Toroughbred magazine for several years during the 1980s. Florida also played a role. California trainer Bob Hess Jr. was running a horse at Gulfstream Park, and so he bid by phone to get the sale-topper, a 2-year-old California-bred son of Merit Man for $60,000. Frank Veiga acted as agent for Hess. Hess trained Merit Man to two stakes wins and a third in the 2013 Besilu Stables Florida Derby (G1). Te trainer said that he would likely put together a partnership of several of his regular clients on the sale-topper. “Merit Man was a lovely horse,” said Hess by phone from Florida. “We’re really excited about him as a stallion. My father (trainer Bob Hess Sr.) looked at all of his horses (at the sale) and said that I had to

buy these.” Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch consigned the sale-topper, who is out of the stakes-placed Aldebaran mare Seaside. Te mare is a half sister to stakes-placed Olga Payne and out of stakes-placed Classic Contender. Hess also bought a 2-year-old Cal-bred flly by Merit Man for $30,000. Also consigned by Lovacres, the flly is out of Lovingier’s homebred Unbridled Meeting, a California-bred daughter of Red Bullet and winner of the 2009 CARF Debutante Stakes. “Tey were very, very good horses,” Lovingier said, adding of the sale-topper, “If they had been by Tapit, they’d have been bringing $500,000. But Merit Man’s a good sire. He’s got some good babies out there. Tese horses are going to do very, very well for him.” Sire power proved important in the top-

priced flly of the sale as well. Craig Lewis, who trained Clubhouse Ride, advised his brother, Larry, in the purchase of a 2-yearold Cal-bred daughter of Clubhouse Ride—Protect Freedom, by In Excess, for $36,000. Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency consigned the flly on behalf of breeder Rozamund Barclay. “Tis is a gorgeous flly,” said Craig Lewis. “She really resembles Clubhouse Ride. She has the same head and the same body. I bought him at the same sale. Like today, it was a rainy day, and I paid $22,000 for him.” Craig Lewis bought Clubhouse Ride as a 2-year-old at the 2010 Barretts January sale for Six-S Racing Stable. Clubhouse Ride eventually earned $1,341,132, twice winning the Californian Stakes (G2). Te stallion currently stands at John Harris’ Harris Farms near Coalinga. Larry Lewis is a retired attorney. He was also the namesake of Larry the Legend, trained by Craig to win the 1995 Santa Anita Derby (G1). Barclay said that she still has Protect Freedom. Te mare is in foal to Barclay’s stallion Northern Causeway, a graded stakes-winning son of Giant’s Causeway who stands at Rancho San Miguel. Colleen Turpin-Boyce sold the toppriced broodmare, Tall and Sweet, for $32,000. NW Management purchased the mare, a 7-year-old winning daughter of Lemon Drop Kid out of the stakes-placed Pulpit mare Reverently. Tis is the family of California leading sire Square Eddie, a half brother to Reverently. Tall and Sweet is
in foal to Danzing Candy, a multiple graded winner who also stands at Rancho San Miguel. Cal-bred Melanistic, consigned by Havens for Abbondanza Racing, also sold in foal to Danzing Candy. Agent Gayle Van Leer bought Melanistic for $23,000. Melanistic is a stakes-placed 10-year-old daughter of Ministers Wild Cat—Back Door Girl, by Charismatic. Bing Bush, a principal in Abbondanza, was reluctant to part with Melanistic. “Abbondanza is more in the racing business,” explained Bush. “I had her for almost three years. She was the most sound flly, and she always looked forward to running. She was very consistent.
She’s just a great flly.” Melanistic earned $375,674 while starting 60 times and fnished second in the 2015 Dream of Summer Stakes. “She earned it the hard way,” said Bush. “She raced until she was 8 years old.” Tom Beckerle purchased two 2-year-old Cal-bred fllies from the Lovacres consignment. He went to $21,000 for a daughter of Wicked Strong out of the stakes-winning Miesque’s Son’s mare Fun Logic. Beckerle also bought a daughter of Govenor Charlie out of the stakes-winning El Corredor mare Tee Game for $19,000. A total of 81 head sold for a gross of $589,300, an average of $7,275, and a median of $4,000. From 122 through the ring, 41 did not sell, for a buy-back rate of 34%.

“It all started from nothing,” Grohl said. A frst hire led the couple to Juan Garcia, who is only the second outside hire ever to come aboard and who is still with the Grohls today. “He came to the United States on a work visa and was living in the laundry room of someone’s house when he got here,” Grohl said. “He actually had a college education in Mexico, but no horse experience.” Undaunted by the task of training someone from the ground up, Grohl hired Garcia and has never regretted it. “He has just picked up on the industry,” the center’s owner said. “Eight years ago he didn’t know how to handle a horse, and now if a bad stud comes in, I let Juan handle him. His horsemanship has developed so much, and he’s so quiet with the horses. I really admire how he stepped up into an industry that was completely foreign to him.” Garcia has proved his loyalty over the years. “He went home to work on his visa one time; I thought I’d never see him again,” Grohl admitted. “He showed back up a few months later with wife and daughter and never left. He is the most hard-working, dedicated, loyal guy there is.” For example, Grohl arrives at 5:30 each morning, and Garcia “always beats me there. And he’s Mr. Consistency. If you show him something a couple of times, he’s on it. He picks up on things so easily. Tere’s no one example I can point to; that’s just who he is.” Premier Equine Center is a rehabilitation facility that is not

When Pat Grohl and his wife, Amie, started Premier Equine Center in Oakdale, they spent several years working as the business’ only two employees. With no previous experience with horses, Juan Garcia learned horsemanship from the ground up at Pat and Amie Grohl’s Premier Equine Center
exclusive to Toroughbreds but does take a large number of racehorses as patients. “We have three covered EuroXcisers running all day,” Grohl said. “On Sunday I redo the list and change the program around. On Monday Juan gets the list and makes it happen. Juan is in charge of the EuroXcisers.” At least 75 horses get time on the EuroXcisers twice a day. Depending on their individual needs, the horses can go from as little as 15 minutes twice a day to an hour twice a day. “It can be a little challenging at times,” Grohl admitted. “We have trot sets that start at two minutes a trot that work up to 25 minutes a trot. Every horse is on its own program, and Juan manages the rehab programs I set up. “When they go in for exercise, he gets their front and hind boots on. From someone eight years ago who knew nothing about horses, now if any horse is a little of he’s the frst to tell me that something seems unusual. He’s very detail oriented and notices everything.” From novice to full-fedged horseman, Garcia has impressed Grohl over the last eight years. “He’s our longest, active employee,” Grohl said. “He appreciates everything we’ve done for him, and we appreciate what he’s done for us. Tere’s no question I can trust him to do it right. Tis guy means a lot to us.”

childhood spent at the racetrack can often develop into a lifelong passion for the game. Tat is certainly true of Clint Roberts, whose father gave him a taste of the ownership side of the industry years ago. At frst Roberts looked poised to pursue that path, until he bought into California sire Lakerville. Now he is fully entrenched in the breeding business.
Roberts remembers spending a day a month at the races as a kid. “My dad always wanted to own horses and usually had one on the track,” he said. “It was in my blood.” Some of the horses that Clint’s father, Tom, campaigned include Speaking of Time, a multiple graded stakes-placed stakes winner of $394,976, and grade 1 winner Famous Digger, who was claimed for $40,000 in 1997 and went on to win the Del Mar Oaks (G1T). Barry Abrams, who has a special place in the Clint Roberts sto-

ry, trained both horses. “My dad’s horses were trained by Roger Stein,” Roberts said. “At the time, Roger’s assistant was Barry Abrams. When I got my driver’s license in high school, I would go to the track and play the last race, then go hang out with Barry. I got really close to him. When Barry went out on his own, I told my dad to give the horses to Barry. I said, ‘He does all the work!’ ” Teir relationship fourished. When the younger Roberts was in his 20s, he was able to aford his own racehorses for the frst time. “Barry was behind the Unusual Heat thing,” Roberts said, speaking of California’s six-time leading sire. “If we had six or seven horses in the barn, fve would be Unusual Heats. We were breeding our broodmares to Unusual Heat.” When Abrams retired from training for health reasons, the Roberts’ horses were dispersed among other trainers, including Mike Pender. Clint was in the barn one day when he overheard Pender talking about a photo of a foal by Lakerville. “I forgot about Lakerville, that he’d gone on to be a sire,” Roberts admitted. Lakerville (Unusual Heat– Foreverinthegame, by Out of Place) won fve of 11 starts with four second-place eforts and earned $318,910. “He was an absolute beast with an incredible turn of foot,” Roberts said. “I was a big believer, (especially since) Barry trained that many Unusual Heats, and out of all of them Lakerville is the one he wanted to make a stallion.”

After nearly a month of negotiation with his dear friend, Roberts became a managing partner in Lakerville. Te 44-year-old Corona resident has put his marketing background to good use: He gave Lakerville his own logo, a website, and a social media presence, and he started buying some of his foals from other breeders. “I took it very seriously,” Roberts said. “I’ve created a brand for him, ordered clothing. I’m doing a hard push on him. Breeding isn’t easy, and it takes a lot of time. But I’ve seen a lot of progress.” Te hardest part was waiting for Lakerville’s frst foals to run. From there, the stallion took care of the rest. In his frst crop, Lakerville has had three winners in nine starters. One of those is multiple stakes winner Lakerball. Bred by Rancho de Los Aviadores, Lakerball is out of the winning Capsized mare Category Ten. Roberts bought the California-bred sophomore flly, now owned in partnership with Greg Pappas’ Pappas Horse Racing Corp and Janie Buss’ Purple Rein Racing. Trained by Doug O’Neill, Lakerball broke her maiden second time out by 81⁄2 lengths. But after losing a starter optional claiming event, options were limited. “We were going to face Cal-breds in a stake, but we found out she wasn’t nominated for the Golden State Series,” Roberts said. “We didn’t want to supplement for the $25,000 without knowing how good she was, and there was a race against open company on the turf. I said, ‘Let’s give her a shot.’ ” Lakerball, 33-1 in the $100,345 Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 8, took the lead out of the gate and ran gamely to win by a head. “She proved us right,” Roberts said. “She surprised the whole industry.” Lakerball then rolled to win the $75,225 Pike Place Dancer Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on Oct. 27 by fve lengths. A long juvenile campaign caught up with her in her graded stakes debut, the Jimmy Durante (G3T) at Del 50

Mar, but Lakerball split the feld when fnishing sixth. She is now pointing for the Feb. 18 California Cup Oaks, which will be her frst stakes start against statebred company. She has won three of six tries and earned $129,825.
We get calls from so many people that think (Lakerville) is really following in the footsteps of Unusual Heat. Obviously, that is the plan. He is really special, and I’m having fun with it.” — Clint Roberts

on the grass. His gelding King Lebron, trained by O’Neill, was sitting on his debut at the end of January. Another Lakerville runner that Roberts doesn’t own is Angelo’s Pride, a two-time winner at Golden Gate. “Te Lakervilles are doing well on the synthetic surface up there,” Roberts said. “Tey can run on anything.” Roberts had already experienced winning, but winning while also owning the stallion is a new dimension. “Tere’s no experience like that,” he said. “It seems like every week there is another great story about a Lakerville runner. We get calls from so many people that think he is really following in the footsteps of Unusual Heat. Obviously, that is the plan. He’s really special, and I’m having fun with it.” None of it would be possible without Barry Abrams, Roberts’ partner and mentor. “It all goes back to Barry,” Roberts said. “He’s a professional at text messaging now, so we talk every day. It’s a really cool relationship we have. I love that man. He’s been so good to me.”

SHEAR ENERGY THE CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF SHEARED HEELS
BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS
H
oof problems can leave a horse lame and unsound unless addressed early. Te hoof must bear weight properly to stay healthy, with multiple structures sharing the load. If there is too much stress on any one part, or if some parts are not taking adequate weight to maintain proper blood fow and hoof expansion, problems arise.
One of the challenges farriers deal with is sheared heels. Tis problem most often results from less than ideal conformation. Usually, the horse toes in or out, putting 56
more stress on one side of the hoof wall (and the heel on that side) than the other. When a horse develops sheared heels, the stressed side is jammed upward, hoof symmetry is distorted, and one heel is bearing most of the weight. Dr. Julie Bullock, a podiatrist in Mt. Sidney, Va., says she often sees sheared heels on a horse that has toe-in or toe-out conformation or abnormal landing patterns. She adds that injuries to the foot/ leg can also create sheared heels if there is pain on one side of the foot, causing the horse to try to land most of the weight on the other side. Te horse that lands harder on one side of the foot than the other will eventually develop sheared heels. “It’s not just how the foot is landing
CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ February 2019 ❙ www.ctba.com
while the horse is in motion,” Bullock said. “As that imbalance starts becoming more pronounced, then the static balance (when the horse is just standing around) is also distorted and will contribute to the problem.” Te earlier you catch this imbalance and deal with it, the better. Too much stress on any one part of the foot will cause certain structures to sufer more stress and trauma than they are meant to take. To stay sound, the hoof needs to bear weight properly, with various structures sharing the load. According to Steve Norman, a farrier in Kentucky who shoes many racehorses, sheared heels are common in running horses.

“Tis problem often starts at an early age due to conformation,” said Norman. “You can sometimes see the process starting by the time the foal is a weanling. It’s important to notice early signs in order to correct it adequately. Otherwise, the problem may eventually become so overwhelming you can’t fully correct it—and all you can do then is just try to keep it from getting worse.” Norman says the majority of cases he sees occur in foals that toe out. Tey put too much pressure on the inside quarter of the foot. “As the young horse is running and growing, there’s more pressure, shoving that heel up,” said Norman. “Tat’s why the afected horse has a straight wall on the inside of the foot and a fared wall on the outside. If the early signs aren’t dealt with by the time the horse is a yearling, it gets worse after he goes into training, with weight of a rider and adding more speed (and more pressure and stress on the feet). “In these situations, soon we are dealing with sheared heals and quarter cracks— because when the digital cushion becomes compressed on one side or the other, it hinders the natural shock absorption in the back part of the heel and then there is even more concussion in that area. It’s a vicious circle, especially if the horse is a runner.” Some sheared heels occur with contracted heels. Most sheared heel situations are like a contracture on just one side of the foot. A normal foot should have a nice shape with sloping hoof walls. If you look at sheared heels, most often it occurs on the inside heel. Tat wall does not have a proper slope. It becomes vertical and straight, and the foot may be fared out on the outside wall. As the one heel gets more contracted and that wall becomes vertical, it begins to be displaced upward. Te part of the foot that’s under the most vertical load tends to develop a straight wall. Te side with a more horizontal load develops a fare. Te inside heel becomes aligned directly beneath the bony column (vertical line of force) and gets pushed upward, creating the sheared heel.

to determine how best to try to correct and balance them. Bullock says x-rays are very helpful when attempting to correct sheared heels. “A lateral and a dorsal-palmar x-ray is critical because you really need to see where the cofn bone is, in relation to the hoof capsule,” she said. Tat bone will start to tip one way or the other and drop. Farriers deal with sheared heels in two common ways. Some trim the sheared heel side lower, and some trim the opposite side lower. Te farriers who trim the sheared heel lower are trying to match wall length, since the inside wall is shoved upward and if you measure the actual length of the wall, it is longer, while the outside (fared side) is actually shorter. Te same school of thought looks at the coronary band, and these farriers try to trim the hoof so the coronary band will be parallel to the ground rather than distorted. But radiographs often show that the cofn bone is tipped lower on the inside. Te length of wall and alignment of coronary band generally can’t be used as guides for trimming because these structures are distorted and this type of trimming might be adding more stress. If you trim that side lower, you might be tipping the coffn bone even lower on that side. You want to keep it parallel to the ground, which is why it’s a good idea to take radiographs to see the cofn bone. How to trim these feet is often a subject of debate, but when good-quality radiographs are taken, it starts to make sense how to trim these. Bullock feels it’s always a good idea to take x-rays and use those as a starting point. If you take subsequent x-rays as you try to correct the sheared heel condition, this enables you to monitor and see whether what you are doing is actually changing the location of the cofn bone. “Te hoof capsule will mimic the position of the bone,” said Bullock. “We don’t really know which comes frst. Is the hoof capsule following the shift of the bone or is the position of the bone being driven and determined by the hoof capsule?” A person can get into trouble just treating hoof-capsule shape without taking into account what’s inside. “When you look at a sheared heel, you

try to determine why it’s being sheared,” said Bullock. “Is it because the horse has a painful lesion that’s causing him to load one side more than the other? Again, radiographs can help determine if the horse has a lameness issue causing abnormal loading of the foot. Te problem might not be due to conformation.” QUARTER CRACKS
Quarter cracks often go hand in hand with sheared heels. A horse with sheared heels will be more at risk for quarter cracks, due to the stress on the hoof wall. Tese problems seem to go together when one side of the foot is overloaded. Norman says that if sheared heels are not dealt with soon enough and if the condition becomes more pronounced, infammation and trauma become worse and the laminae might start tearing and hemorrhaging. “If the laminae tear, the quarter crack blows out,” he said. “Te crack has already been forming inside the laminae. We call this a blind quarter crack because it hasn’t surfaced yet.” Tere are a weakness and a separation inside the hoof wall due to the abnormal and excessive forces. SPECIAL SHOES
Bullock explains that in order to correct a sheared heel, you must address the heel that’s being pushed up. “It must be foated to where it’s not taking weight, so it will drop back down,” she said. “But you have to support the hoof capsule while that’s happening.” For a severe case of sheared heels, many farriers make a bar shoe or heart bar shoe and “foat” that side so it isn’t bearing
A shod horse with a sheared heel
weight. Some cases become so sheared and overloaded that the wall starts to separate and part of the hoof wall must be cut out. But usually these will heal afterward. Te most important thing is rebalancing the foot, using radiographs to guide the farrier in getting the foot trimmed properly.
It’s important to notice early signs (of sheared heels) in order to correct it adequately. Otherwise, the problem may eventually become so overwhelming you can’t fully correct it.” — Steve Norman, farrier
If the inside heel starts to shear, it frst becomes more vertical, looking almost like half a contracted foot because that inside heel becomes too narrow. Some years back, Dr. Scott Morrison at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Kentucky created a special spring shoe to address this,
opening up just half the hoof—just the sheared side—to get it away from the vertical line of force and get a better shape to it. Te spring shoe has a hinge in the toe and a spring at the end of the heel branch. Te special shoe is usually glued under the horse’s foot and then the spring is placed into the shoe. If the pressure from the spring can move that inside contracted heel out to where it should be, that heel drops. If it’s been shoved up and sheared, it drops down and relaxes when you get it pushed back out, getting that inside hoof wall away from the vertical line of force. Correcting the problem and bringing the heel back down to where it should be don’t change the horse’s conformation. In these situations, it is wise to give these horses support over their frog if they have to be shod, either with a heart bar shoe or one with a plate across the heel. You want to distribute the load over the frog and over more of the heel structures. Norman says that sheared heels are probably one of the worst breakdowns on a racehorse, as far as trying to keep the horse in training. “When that quarter and heel become infamed, the horse starts limping and you have to try to support the foot to relieve the pressure,” said Norman. “Mechanically, it’s a little tough to do this and still keep the horse racing.” Te shoe he generally uses is a Z-bar shoe—a bar shoe in the shape of a Z. “It’s like half of a heart bar shoe,” Norman said. “We basically cut the shoe of at the widest part of the foot, where the sheared heel is. Ten the bar of the shoe runs straight across to the tip of the frog. An aluminum bar up the frog connects
FIRST SIGNS OF A SHEARED HEEL Farrier Steve Norman says that the frst early sign of a developing problem with sheared heels is that the hairline around the bulbs of the heel will change. “Hair over the stressed heel bulb will stick straight up,” Norman said. “The hairline over the normal heel bulb—the one that’s not traumatized—will be lying down normally. When you feel heat in one heel bulb

or see the hair standing up in this area, this is the frst sign of infammation and a potentially sheared heel starting to occur. “This is very noticeable if you are looking for it. If you haven’t seen any evidence of a problem in earlier trimming or shoeing of that foot, and suddenly you see the hairline popping up, you’ll also see a red ridge around the hairline—due to

the heat and concussion. “If you don’t deal with it at this early stage, the horse usually goes lame. Whenever I pick up a foot to pull the shoes off, the frst thing I look at is the hairline over the heel bulbs because this is often the frst sign of a problem on a racehorse. This gives me a read on how that foot is hitting the ground.”

Going barefoot is an option in correcting sheared heels for horses that don’t have to be shod. “Barefoot allows the frog, bars, and sole to contact the ground and help take weight,” said equine podiatrist Julie Bullock, DVM. This unloads the wall. One of the reasons for the occurrence of sheared heels and quarter cracks is too much loading of the perimeter of the foot—the hoof wall—and not using the other structures of the foot for weight bearing. Thus, going barefoot can be another option for horses that don’t have to compete with shoes. If the horse can have time off from work and time to adjust to going barefoot, this can work well. “I give the horse owner or trainer a rasp and show them where to smooth off a little bit every few days while the horse is barefoot,” said Bullock. “I tell them to give two or three licks with the rasp to help keep the foot in better balance.” If the problem is due to conformation, it will be ongoing for the rest of the horse’s life. “If you wait for the farrier to come back in six to eight weeks, you’ve lost ground,” said Bullock. “You are continually taking two steps forward and one step backward.” Routine maintenance on a barefoot horse can go a long way toward resolving the problem.
to the good heel and supports the good half of the foot, leaving the damaged heel foating (no contact with the shoe) so it’s not taking any weight.” On a sheared heel, the horn tubules in the hoof wall are bent. “Getting the weight of that heel will take the pressure of those distorted tubules to where they can relax and straighten again,” said Norman. “You can see the heel come back down, with this pressure of, reducing the concussion and infammation, reducing the pain.” Bullock says some farriers also try grooving the hoof wall along the sheared 62

side to encourage more fexibility. Te grooving tends to weaken and change the alignment of the horn tubules, allowing that heel to drop and spread even more. If digital x-rays are being taken, this method (and any progress made while using it) can be readily evaluated. “Grooving the side that’s pushed up may resolve a sheared heel if the horse has a slightly pushed up coronary band,” said Bullock. “Tis method is also tried for quarter cracks, to help spread the stresses on that part of the hoof wall. We don’t

Once the sheared heels are corrected, it’s very important to keep up with the trimming program and stay with a shoe that provides some type of support over the frog or base of the frog, to share the load. All too often these corrected horses end up with a problem again. Just because you have it looking good doesn’t mean it’s corrected forever. If a horse has seriously sheared heels, it might be a situation where all you can do is support and maintain the foot because that horse’s conformation will always put extra pressure on one heel. Such horses need careful trimming and shoeing for the rest of their life. Tere are also some horses that don’t have their hoof and pastern in a straight line. If you look at them from the front, it looks like the hoof is ofset to the outside, like the foot is put onto the pastern too much toward the outside. Te pastern comes into the hoof capsule from the medial side. Tose feet tend to develop serious sheared heels. Tis construction puts extra stress on the inside heel, and the horse needs corrective trimming/shoeing each time the farrier works on the feet.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2017 was $22,593 or 47% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 47% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 68%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Dec. 31, 2018.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
