RACETRACK COALITION TO PHASE OUT LASIX Many major California racetracks have joined a coalition of Toroughbred racing associations and organizations committed to phasing out Lasix beginning in 2020. Te initiative supports eliminating the use of Lasix in stakes races held at coalition racetracks beginning in 2021. All tracks owned by Te Stronach Group, including Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields, along with Del Mar and Los Alamitos’ Toroughbred division, have signed on to the initiative. Also signing on are tracks owned or operated by Churchill Downs Incorporated, the New York Racing Association, Keeneland, Lone Star Park, Remington Park, Oaklawn Park, and Tampa Bay Downs. Tese tracks represent 86% of the stakes assigned graded or listed status in the U.S. in 2018. According to a press release, the coalition tracks will work with their respective horsemen’s associations and racing commissions toward implementing this change. Under the new program, beginning Jan. 1, 2020, 2-year olds would not be allowed to be treated with Lasix within 24 hours of a race. Beginning in 2021, the same prohibition would extend to all horses participating in any stakes race at coalition tracks. Accordingly, in 2021 the races constituting the Triple Crown would all be run under the new rules. Breeders’ Cup Limited, the Toroughbred Owners and Breeders’ Association, the American Graded Stakes Committee, and the Kentucky Toroughbred Association have also joined the coalition.

Galilean

Coolmore Purchases Interest in Galilean Te Coolmore partnership of John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith bought an interest in California-bred Galilean. West Point Toroughbreds sold Coolmore the interest prior to the April 13 Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park. Galilean, who is also owned by Denise Barker and William Sandbrook, fnished ffth in that race. K. Neal and Pam Christopherson’s Bar C Racing Stables Inc. bred Galilean, a 3-year-old son of Uncle Mo—Fresia, by El Prado. Tey sold Galilean to Quarter Pole Enterprises for $60,000 at the 2017 Barretts select yearling sale. Eddie Woods pinhooked him into the 2018 Barretts April 2-year-old sale, where West Point bought him for a sale-topping $600,000. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Galilean became a stakes winner in his frst start, winning the 2018 Barretts Juvenile Stakes. He has since added the 2018 King Glorious Stakes and 2019 California Cup Derby. He also fnished second in the 2018 Golden State Juvenile Stakes and third in a division of the 2019 Rebel Stakes (G2). Galilean has earned $366,000.

Santa Anita Park and the Toroughbred Owners of California in mid-April announced a purse increase of $10,000 for all non-stakes races from April 26-June 2 at Santa Anita. Te increase was then to be evaluated for the remaining three weeks of the spring meet, which ends June 23. Santa Anita was closed much of March as track management tested its track surface and instituted increased safety protocols in the wake of a rash of 23 fatalities since the meet opened Dec. 26. Te track had come under intense scrutiny from media and animal rights’ groups. “We know the last few months have been tough on everyone, especially our horsemen and owners, so working with the TOC we came up with an aggressive plan to boost all nonstakes purses for the next six weeks,” said Tim Ritvo, chief operating ofcer of Te Stronach Group. “Tis has also been difcult on our customers, and we are working hard to improve the product to thank them for their continued support.” “It’s important to all of California horsemen for Santa Anita to close this meet on a strong note,” added Nick Alexander, who chairs TOC. “We appreciate the purse supplements to be funded directly by Te Stronach Group and welcome the opportunity to match those funds from the TOC purse account. Tis will result in over $1 million of additional purse money for horsemen at Santa Anita in the next six weeks.”

SHIP AND WIN ENHANCES BONUS Del Mar has added an enhanced bonus package to its “Ship and Win” program. For the the past eight years the program has provided fnancial incentives to owners and trainers to import out-of-state horses to race at the Del Mar summer meeting, which this year opens July 17 and runs through Sept. 2. For the 2019 season Ship and Win will offer horsemen an automatic check for $2,500, up from $1,000 when the program frst began. Additionally, the frst-race purse bonus has been boosted to 40%, a fgure that began with 20%. “That 40% applies to purse payouts across the board, not just the winner’s share,” said David Jerkens, Del Mar’s racing secretary. “We’ve brought in more than a thousand horses under Ship and Win, and they’ve made thousands of starts at all of the state’s racetracks.” The equine infux has helped Del Mar maintain one of the highest feld-size averages in the country. During the summer meeting in 2018, Del Mar averaged 8.7 runners per race. Eligible horses must have made their last start outside California and cannot have raced in the state within the past 12 months. First-time starters are not eligible. All stakes runners are eligible to receive the $2,500 starter fee, but no stakes runners—including those in overnight stakes—are eligible for the 40% frst-race purse bonus. Those with questions concerning the program are encouraged to contact Jerkens, or Tom Robbins, Del Mar’s executive vice president for racing, at (858) 792-4230.

Santa Anita Raises Overnight Purses

Portland Meadows

PORTLAND MEADOWS TO CLOSE Portland Meadows in Oregon plans to close, and Grants Pass will likely take over its dates, according to BloodHorse. The Portland Monthly frst reported the track’s closing. Portland Meadows opened 74 years ago, ending its most recent meeting in February. The Stronach Group, which operates Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields, owns Portland Meadows. Portland Monthly noted that a permit application has been fled for initial development of the 64-acre property. William P. Kyne, who helped found Bay Meadows in Northern California, directed construction of Portland Meadows in 1945. The track opened in 1946. Grants Pass, a fve-furlong oval in Southern Oregon, conducted nine fair dates in 2018 under the auspices of TMB Racing. Travis Boersma, owner of TMB Racing and a racehorse owner, said that improvement plans for Grants Pass would include widening the track and lengthening a chute to allow 440-yard Quarter Horse races. He said improvements are also needed on the backstretch and on the front side. TMB Racing has been awarded 35 dates a year for commercial racing and will have simulcast rights, which could increase purses. Grants Pass purses have been averaging $17,039 per day for its fair dates, run in June. At its most recent 37-day meeting, which ran from Sept. 30-Feb. 5, Portland Meadows offered average daily purses of $52,971.

GOING DIGITAL

A NEW ERA DAWNS FOR FOAL REGISTRATION

W

ith the yearling sales rapidly approaching, breeders should be aware that foals of 2018 are the frst ones whose registration certifcates from Te Jockey Club will be digital, rather than paper copies. Te Jockey Club notes that breeders, as well as those who act as agents for breeders, who do not already have an Interactive Registration account should sign up for one at registry.jockeyclub.com. Te Jockey Club has also posted the following frequently asked questions regarding digital certifcates. 1. How will I receive my Digital Certifcate(s)? When you log on to your Jockey Club Interactive Registration account, you will see an option under DIGITAL CERTIFICATES labeled CERTIFICATE MANAGEMENT that will display the certifcates currently assigned to your Interactive Registration account.

12

2. Who is assigned the Digital Certifcate? Digital Certifcates are assigned to a Certifcate Manager, a person or entity authorized to control the disposition of a Digital Certifcate. Te Certifcate Manager may or may not be the owner of the horse. 3. How will I forward my Digital Certifcate to a sales company, racetrack, or other entity that requires the Certifcate of Foal Registration? Te Certifcate Manager will be able to assign the certifcate to another party by selecting the appropriate entity or person, clicking the button that says “Assign Certifcate,” and then following the prompts to complete the assignment. 4. How will I know when a Digital Certifcate has been assigned to my account? An email notifcation will be sent shortly after a digital certifcate(s) has been assigned to your Interactive Registration account. 5. Will all of my horses be issued a Digital Certifcate? Foals of 2018 and after will be issued Digital Certifcates.

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ May 2019 ❙ www.ctba.com

6. What if a mistake was made when assigning a Digital Certifcate? If a mistake was made when assigning a Digital Certifcate, the assignor should contact Te Jockey Club for assistance at inquiries@jockeyclub.com. 7. How can I determine the current Digital Certifcate Manager of a Toroughbred? When you log on to your Jockey Club Interactive Registration account, you will see an option under REGISTRATION labeled CHECK REGISTRATION STATUS that will display the current Digital Certifcate Manager for foals of 2018 and later. 8. Does the ownership data recorded with the assignment of a Digital Certifcate prove title to the horse? No. Te Jockey Club is a pedigree registry for Toroughbred horses, not an ownership or title registry. Accordingly, any information presented by Te Jockey Club concerning the “owner” of a horse is based solely upon information provided by others and is in no way warranted or otherwise ofered by Te Jockey Club as being a representation of who the actual owner or title holder of a particular Toroughbred is.

Gypsy Blu was winning her third race when Glatt claimed her. “She was one for one on the turf, and I was really impressed with her turf race prior to the time that I claimed her,” said Glatt. “I had another Papa Clem that I put on the turf, a mare named Cordiality, that we did really well with when we put her on the grass.” Gypsy Blu has thrived on that surface. Te mare had won her only start, a maiden claiming event at Golden Gate Fields in 2001. Her frst foal, Unsupervised, by Newton’s Law, was a winner at the time and would go on to be stakes-placed. “Torson wasn’t asking much,” Reid recalled. “Miss Free Bird was in foal to a stallion called Roar, who was a hotshot when he was racing back east.” Grade 2 winner Roar, by Forty Niner, was brought to California to stand in 2003 and would ultimately be known as the broodmare sire of Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra. Muqtarib, out of German champion Shicklah, was a group 2 winner in England but never won a stakes race or anything higher than a Belmont Park allowance in the United States. But the partners agreed to the mating, and shortly thereafter they bought out the other half of Miss Free Bird so that they owned her outright. Te Muqtarib mating produced a chestnut Cal-bred mare named A Jealous Woman. With a father in the employ of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Bafert and an uncle who has been Doug O’Neill’s chief assistant for years, Nicole Avila has access to some of the best and brightest equine stars in the sport. Manuel Avila was already galloping horses when his daughter was born, and he was training to become a jockey’s valet in the afternoons. Te younger Avila can’t recall a time when she wasn’t at the racetrack, at least most weekends. “It was a family thing,” she said. Her parents’ divorce led to Avila’s spending more time at the track with her dad. “I took his old camera with me so I wasn’t bored,” she said. “Tat was right around the time of American Pharoah. Ever since then I’ve been really into racing.” Te elder Avila galloped American Pharoah during the colt’s juvenile campaign and regularly until April 2015. American Pharoah went on to win the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). “He brought a lot of great memories for my family during a time that was hard,” Avila said. “Tat’s why he’s a favorite.” Manuel has galloped other Bafert-trained stars, such as dual grade 1-winner Te Factor and $17,422,600-earner Arrogate, who won the Dubai World Cup (G1), Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1), and the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). “I really got to know his personality and hang out with him,” Nicole said of Arrogate. “(Unbeaten) Mastery was special too; his career was short-lived but well remembered. Tere were a lot of fllies I really liked, such as (grade 2-winner) Faypien and (stakes winner) Swift Lady. She forever holds a place in my heart. She’s number one.” Avila, a self-taught freelance photographer, is now 18 and

But she also has diferent dreams. “I’m in my senior year of high school, and I’m either going to go to the University of Arizona or to Cal Poly Pomona in the fall to major in animal science. I want to become an equine vet or go where the degree takes me.” While her dad has played a huge role in paving her course, Avila also gave a nod to uncle Leandro Mora, whose presence in the Doug O’Neill outft meant Avila got to journey to Churchill Downs for the 2016 Kentucky Derby (G1) with subsequent winner Nyquist. “I got to go as part of the team,” she said. “Tat was such a cool experience, being part of the barn crew. It was my frst Derby and we won, so that was the best moment of my horse racing life.” Nyquist, the 2015 Eclipse champion 2-year-old male, won the Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (G1) en route to the Kentucky Derby, then fnished a courageous third in the Preakness Stakes (G1). He now stands at Darley in Lexington, Ky. Whether through her photos or a career as a veterinarian, Avila just wants to make a diference. “I want to help make the industry a better place for humans and horses,” she said. With a start like that, she’s well on her way.

Te breeders and owners of registered California-bred Toroughbreds and the owners of California-based stallions. WHAT ARE BREEDERS AWARDS?

A monetary award that is paid to the breeder of a registered California-bred Toroughbred fnishing frst, second, or third in any race run in California and any graded stakes races conducted within the United States. Breeders will receive 75% of the remainder of the total incentive award monies after owner awards are paid, with an individual breeder receiving a pro-rated share of this breeders fund. Te maximum purse considered earned in any qualifying race within this state shall be $330,000 for a win, $120,000 for a second, and $90,000 for a third-place fnish. Breeder awards always are paid exclusive of nomination, entry, and starting fees. WHAT ARE OWNERS AWARDS?

A monetary award that is paid to the owner of a registered California-bred Toroughbred horse that runs in qualifying races in California. Owners can receive at least a 20% bonus on the fnisher’s share for fnishing frst through ffth in an open allowance or overnight stake race and up to a 20% bonus for fnishing frst in an open starter allowance above $15,000 and open non-maiden claiming races with a claiming price of $40,000 or greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California. Tese levels are purposely set high to encourage the ownership of high-quality runners and to restrict the number of qualifers so that the awards will function as a major incentive. Owner awards always are paid exclusive of nomination, entry, and starting fees. Tey are listed in the racing program and will be distributed at the same time as the purse by the paymaster. WHAT IS THE MAIDEN BONUS PROGRAM?

A Maiden Bonus award will be paid to the owner of a registered California-bred or registered California-sired foal for winning a maiden special weight race. Te bonus amount is $17,500 in Southern California and $10,000 in Northern California and at all Fair meetings throughout the state. Tese awards are paid directly to the owner approximately 45 racing days after the win. Only races at 4 1/2 furlongs or longer will qualify. WHAT ARE STALLION AWARDS?

In order to stimulate the acquisition in California of nationally prominent stallions, and retain high-caliber California stallions, monetary awards are paid annually to the owners of registered California stallions whose California-conceived or California-bred get have won a qualifying race or have fnished, frst, second, or third in a stakes race in the state or any graded stakes race within the United States during the year. Qualifying races are any non-claiming races, including maiden allowance and starter allowance races, with a purse of at least $15,000, and open non-maiden claiming races with a claiming price

of $40,000 or greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California also qualify. Stallion awards are exclusive of nomination, entry, and starting fees. Stallions must be registered by Feb. 15 each year to be eligible for stallion awards. Stallion owners will receive 25% of the remainder of the total incentive award monies after owners awards are paid, with an individual owner of a registered California stallion (as of Dec. 31) receiving a pro-rated share of the stallion fund based on the total qualifying earnings of the get during the year. Te maximum purse considered earned in any qualifying race within this state shall be $330,000 for a win, $120,000 for a second, and $90,000 for a third-place fnish. Te stallion must be continuously present in California from Feb. 1 to July 15, inclusive, of the year 2010 or any subsequent calendar year in which he stood at stud and fathered the participant in the race. If a sire dies in this state in the year 2010 or any subsequent year and stood his last season at stud in this state, or was standing at stud in this state on the date of his death in the year 2010 or any subsequent year, he shall thereafter continue to be considered an eligible Toroughbred stallion regarding a race participant fathered by him in that season. Te California Toroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) will help compile data, but it is the ultimate responsibility of the stallion owner to advise that ofcial registering agency, on or before Feb. 15 of any year, of any and all purses earned during the preceding year that shall be considered in determining the amount of the stallion award to which the owner is entitled. DOES THE PROGRAM INCLUDE RACES OUTSIDE OF CALIFORNIA?

Yes. Te breeder of a California-bred Toroughbred fnishing frst, second, or third in a graded stakes race outside of California, but within the United States, will be paid a pro-rated share of the breeders fund. Te maximum purse considered earned in any race shall be $165,000 for a win, $60,000 for second, and $45,000 for a third-place fnish. CTBA will help compile data, but it is the ultimate responsibility of the breeder to advise the ofcial registering agency (CTBA), on or before Feb. 15 of any year, of any and all purses earned during the preceding year in graded stakes races outside of this state by horses bred by the breeder. Also, the owner of a registered California stallion whose California-conceived or California-bred get fnished frst, second, or third in a graded stakes outside of California, but within the United States, will be paid a pro-rated share of the Stallion fund with the maximum purse considered earned the same as the breeders above. WHEN ARE THE PREMIUMS PAID?

Owner awards are paid at the same time as the purse by the paymaster. Breeder awards are paid twice a year with a conservative advance payment of approximately 8-10% being paid around Sept. 1 and the fnal payment for 2019 being paid by March 31, 2020. Te stallion awards are paid prior to March 31, 2020. www.ctba.com ❙ May 2019 ❙ CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED

ARE THERE SPECIAL RACING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CALIFORNIA-BREDS?

Yes. Racetracks in California are required by law to ofer one race per day that is restricted to California-breds. Last year, that amounted to 304 additional racing opportunities and more than $15.6 million in additional purses for California-breds. In addition, the California legislature has declared its intent that at least 10% of the total stakes purses paid at any race meeting in California be paid on stakes races restricted to registered California-breds. Tis amounted to almost $5 million in 2018 and will grow signifcantly through the creation of the Golden State Series. Also, in 2020, California Cup XXX will be held at Santa Anita Park on a date to be announced. Part of the funding for California Cup XXX will come from the incentive award category, the California-bred Race Fund. 9.5% of the total incentive award monies will be used for this category, with the monies funding the promotion of California-bred races, the supplement of purses for California-bred races, and the creation of new California-bred stakes. WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A CALIFORNIA-BRED?

Te defnition of a California-bred is as follows: A California-bred Toroughbred is a horse dropped in California after being conceived in California, or any Toroughbred foal dropped by a mare in California if the mare remains in California to be next bred to a Toroughbred stallion standing in the state. If the mare cannot be bred for two successive seasons, but remains in California during that period, her foal will be considered a California-bred.

California by a registered California stallion. A California-sired horse is only eligible for entry in races restricted to California-bred or California-sired horses and is not eligible for any breeder or owner awards, except the maiden bonus awards. HOW DOES ONE REGISTER A CALIFORNIA-BRED OR CALIFORNIA-SIRED HORSE?

Registration applications must be fled with the CTBA. Only those horses that are both registered with Te Jockey Club and fulfll all requirements as outlined in the defnition of a California-bred are eligible. Te fees for registration are as follows: 1) $100.00 for CTBA members, $200.00 for non-members if applied for by Sept. 30 of the foal’s yearling year; 2) $125.00 for CTBA members. $250.00 for non-members if applied for after Sept. 30 of yearling but before Jan. 1 following; and 3) $750.00 if applied for after Jan. 1 of 2-year-old year. If desired, application can be made in advance of receipt of Jockey Club Certifcates to escape penalty for late fling, but no actual registration will be made until certifcates are available. CTBA has representation at California tracks to help facilitate late registrations. HOW CAN I OBTAIN MORE INFORMATION?

WHITE LINE DISEASE UNDERSTANDING AND TREATING THE PROBLEM BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

W

Te hoof wall consists of three layers: the stratum externum, the stratum medium, and the stratum internum. Te visible “white line” at the bottom of the foot between the hoof wall and the sole is actually not afected by this hoof infection. Paul Goodness, chief of farrier services at Virginia Tech’s Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, Va., says white line disease is an infection of the stratum internum and/ or the junction between the stratum internum and the stratum medium of the hoof wall. Tis is the area just beneath the outer horny hoof wall—between the hoof wall and the actual “white line” layer that is visible at the bottom of the foot. Pathogenic microbes that like to live in an airless (anaerobic) environment can eat away at this part of the hoof just outside the white line, if they ever get started. Heather O’Brien, an American Farrier’s Association certifed farrier in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, says the cause of white line disease was elusive for many years, until studies pointed toward fungi as the culprit. “Burney Chapman, a farrier turned scientist, took biopsies of many afected feet and looked at them in the lab,” O’Brien 50

hite line disease is the common term for a progressive infection and subsequent separation of the hoof wall—with the wall coming loose from the foot. Tis problem usually starts at the bottom of the foot and travels upward as this area becomes hollowed out.

said. “He found more than 50 diferent bacteria and fungi in these biopsies, but there were three types of fungal spores that were always present. He made the logical assumption that these three were the ones that were breaking down the hoof.” Today we realize that the cause of this hoof deterioration is usually a combination of bacteria and fungi that are commonly found in the horse’s environment, in the soil everywhere. “Tis is what we fnd when that disintegrating material inside the hoof is cultured,” said Goodness. “Te infection usually (but not always) begins with some kind of separation in the hoof or intrusion into that area. Te farrier usually discovers this disease by fnding an odd opening into the foot.” Upon closer inspection, the opening may be very small compared to a larger hollowed out area up inside the hoof wall. Te infection may get started in a toe crack or quarter crack, or in some old nail holes. Any hole or break that goes through that area can allow the microbes to enter. Te severity of white line disease can range from small pockets in the white line on the bottom of the foot—visible on the ground surface—to large hollow areas that extend all the way up to the coronary band. Sometimes you won’t see a cavity, if the infection entered through a small pinpoint opening higher in the wall. Ten there may be a hollow area in the hoof wall, with little or no sign at the ground surface. Or you might fnd a small tract at the ground surface and a huge cavity higher up inside the wall. You might hear a hollow sound when the hoof is tapped with a hoof pick or some other tool. One of the old terms for this condition was hollow hoof. Goodness says this infection can afect any age, breed, or gender, whether the horse is shod or unshod. It may afect only one hoof or multiple hooves. It has been reported in almost any environment, from dry/arid to wet/humid. People used to think it occurred mainly in wet, humid conditions. At frst no one knew what caused it. Horsemen called the early stages seedy toe, due to the separation, debris, and damaged

White line disease is characterized by white, crumbly, chalky material in the hoof

material at the toe. “Tis problem is usually discovered by a farrier when doing normal, routine hoof care/trimming or shoeing, or by a veterinarian doing a lameness workup,” said Goodness. “It almost always is associated with some type of poor hoof conformation, which can either be a cause or an efect. I rarely run across white line disease in a hoof that is perfect. Tere is usually some kind of imbalance that puts stress/ strain on the foot, causing distortion, and it may be this poor conformation that causes the initial separation that allows an

access for the microbes.” White line disease has a characteristic appearance, with white, crumbly, chalky material in the afected area instead of healthy hoof tissue. White line disease by itself does not cause pain or lameness. If the hollow area in the wall becomes extensive enough, however, there will be some separation of the hoof wall that compromises support for the cofn bone. “Tis generally results in some distal displacement of that bone,” said Goodness. “It tends to move or sink within the foot. Te skeleton/leg bones depend on support from the whole hoof to hold it up, and if part of that hoof is compromised, something shifts and moves.” Te foot loses some of the attachment that normally binds the cofn bone to the hoof wall. It looks like laminitis, but it is not. With laminitis, the laminae attaching the bone to the hoof wall fail and the bone drops. With white line disease, the hoof wall attachment between the two epidermal layers fails. On radiographs it looks like laminitis since the bone will actually move or displace, depending on where the wall damage is. Te bone might rotate (the front part dropping down) or it might sink to one side or the other, at the quarter. “As things start to shift, there may be some laminar sheering or solar compres-

have poor hoof quality, with more brittle or weak hoof walls. Tey just don’t hold up under the same kind of environment as the rest of the horses on that farm or in that stable.” Te risk doesn’t seem to be environmental as much as it is in horses that have hoof capsule defects and fares, according to Dr. Scott Morrison of Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky. If a horse has a lot of toe, the feet often become dished. Te normal hoof wall is designed to be worn away as fast as it grows. Te longer the hoof capsule just sits there without being worn away or trimmed, the more vulnerable it is to infections. An unbalanced hoof has more stress on the white line, creating openings for the pathogens to enter. “Some horses tend to get white line disease repeatedly,” said Morrison. “So once we get the problem cleared up, I usually recommend Dealing with white soaking the feet in chloline disease is not rock- rine dioxide every couple months or so to make et science. Te best preventative is just to keep the foot balanced and strong, and catch any signs of infection early. Tere are several species of fungi that can cause white line disease, breaking down the protein structure of the hoof wall.” Tis opportunistic disease can also be transmitted from one horse to another on farriers’ tools, or transmitted to human fngernails. “I had a fngernail infection a few years ago that I think was from horses I was working on with white line disease,” Morrison said. If you have a damaged nail or one that’s pulled away, handling a hoof with white line disease gets you an infection unless you wash your hands afterward. Farriers working on a horse with white line disease should disinfect tools between horses. “Tere may be a high population of fungus in an afected hoof, and if you work on another horse or nail a shoe to its foot, these pathogens could be spread by your tools,” said Morrison. “When I work on a horse with white line disease, I wipe my tools with a disinfectant or heat them with a propane torch to kill any pathogens. Metal tools can be safely heated hot enough to kill the fungi. “Some people feel that being in wet felds is a risk, but the worst cases occur in horses in stalls,” said Morrison. “We also see white line disease in laminitis horses because they don’t grow much toe very quickly. Te wall isn’t replaced with fresh, strong horn in a timely manner; the old horn just sits there and becomes exposed to fungal infections.”

I

t’s been hard to determine what makes a horse susceptible to white line disease, especially individuals with repeated infections. “You might have fve horses of the same breeding living in the same feld, eating the same food, and one might have white line disease and the others won’t,” said Heather O’Brien, an American Farrier’s Association certifed farrier in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. Some people started looking at the integrity of the hoof wall itself. A scientist in Scotland, Susan Kellen, researched nutritional aspects, and in her view this disease is caused by nutritional imbalance that leads to poor-quality hooves. Even if horses are eating the same feeds, one might utilize or metabolize the nutrients a bit differently. “If hoof quality is poor, there may be intracellular spaces that bacteria can get into,” said O’Brien. “They create even bigger spaces that fungal spores can get into. Thus, horses in any environment, any age or occupation, shod or barefoot, could get white line disease.” She feels proper nutrition is important to repair the quality of the hoof horn, balancing the diet for that individual so the horse can grow a stronger hoof. Kellen pointed out that too much vitamin A is just as bad as too little for hoof health, and this is true of other essentials of diet such as selenium, iron, and iodine. Over-supplementation can be as damaging as inadequate levels. Biotin, protein, zinc, and methionine are also important ingredients. Structural integrity of the hoof can be helped with proper, well-balanced nutrition. Keeping the feet clean, trimmed, and balanced will also help by avoiding additional stress on the hoof wall that might cause excessive leverage and prying forces that lead to separation—and access by fungi.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2017 was $22,593 or 47% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 47% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 68%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through April 21, 2019.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
