alifornia-breds have been dominant in graded stakes races so far this year. Even with fewer racing days in Southern California for the past several months, Cal-breds have already won 11 graded stakes races through mid-July. (See list at right.) To put this in perspective, there were a total of four graded winners in all of last year. Many of these graded wins in 2019 have, in fact, occurred when horses shipped back east to prestigious racetracks in New York and Kentucky. Also, it is important to point out that the 11 graded wins, thus far, have come on various surfaces (dirt and turf) and distances (short and long). Tis highlights the fact that the local breeding program is well balanced with the current stallions and mares residing in the state. Te accomplishments this frst half of the year have been by 11 individual horses, with the majority being the progeny of several diferent sires. In regard to the stallions currently standing, or having previously stood, in California, nine already have 2019 progeny earnings over $1 million. Two of them are currently listed among the top 50 sires in the country. Tis is more than any other state outside of Kentucky. Te commitments made by the industry to provide greater incentives to upgrade breeding stock in the state have assisted in yielding these recent favorable results. Te addition of the Golden State Series, maiden bonus, and all the other lucrative incentives and restricted purse oferings are defnitely leading the way. With many stakes ofered throughout the summer and

Soi Phet at Old Friends California-bred millionaire Soi Phet is now living in blissful retirement at Old Friends in Georgetown, Ky. He made his fnal start in the June 29 Bertrando Stakes at Los Alamitos and arrived in Kentucky July 8. Trainer Leonard Powell claimed Soi Phet for $16,000 in May 2013 and nurtured him through a long career. ARCHA Racing bred Soi Phet, and Powell claimed the gelding for his wife, Soi Phet Mathilde; the Benowitz Family Trust; and Paul Viskovich. Soi Phet won 15 of 64 races, including eight stakes, with seven seconds and six thirds, for total earnings of $1,023,917. He won the 2014 and 2018 Bertrando, and when he captured the Crystal Water Stakes at 10 in 2018, he became the oldest horse to win a stakes at Santa Anita. In 2014 Soi Phet set a track record of 1:33.95 for a mile in the Los Alamitos Mile, a mark that still stands. “I’m such a fan of Soi Phet, and I’m so excited to welcome him to Old Friends,” said Michael Blowen, the organization’s founder and president. “We hope all of his fans will visit him here, and we thank Leonard and his owners for sharing this great champ with us.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law June 26 that gives the California Horse Racing Board the power to halt a race meeting immediately if it determines the safety of horses or riders might be in jeopardy. Previously, the CHRB had to notice a public meeting 10 days in advance. Te new law was put into place in the wake of the rash of fatalities at Santa Anita during a very wet winter. Santa Anita instituted a series of new safety protocols at the track, and at the direction of Gov. Newsom the CHRB added a fve-person panel of regulatory veterinarians and stewards. Tat panel reviewed horses being entered during the last weeks of the Santa Anita meeting and continued its work at Los Alamitos and Del Mar.

California-bred Horse of the Year California Chrome is not shuttling to Chile this year as he has done the two previous seasons. The California champion stands the North American breeding seasons at Taylor Made Stallions in Nicholasville, Ky. Ben Taylor, vice president of Taylor Made, said that the decision was made because of management changes at Sumaya Stud in Santiago, Chile, and that the Chilean economy is not as strong as it was during the frst California Chrome two years, when California Chrome shuttled there. California Chrome, a son of Lucky Pulpit—Love the Chase, by Not For Love, bred 145 mares his frst season and has 98 live foals that are yearlings of 2019. He retired as the second-richest racehorse based in North America with $14,752,650. California Chrome stands for $35,000.
Graydar, winner of the 2013 Donn Handicap (G1), has moved to Linda Madsen’s Milky Way Farms in Temecula. He previously stood at Taylor Made Stallions in Kentucky. The 10-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song—Sweetest Smile, by Dehere, is among the top 10 thirdcrop sires by earnings ($2,536,995), Graydar stakes winners (two), and winners (48). His foals include Gray Attempt, winner of the Smarty Jones and Gazebo stakes; Gray Magician, second in the UAE Derby (G2) as well as the grade 3 Indiana Derby; along with stakes winner Wondrshegotthundr. Graydar also sired Lom-
bo, winner of the 2018 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita. Campaigned by Twin Creeks Racing Stables and trained by Todd Pletcher, Graydar, in addition to the Donn, won the 2013 New Orleans Handicap (G2) at Fair Grounds and the Kelso Invitational Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park. Bred by William S. Farish, Graydar earned a total of $841,560.
■ Sir Prancealot to Rancho San Miguel Sir Prancealot, who has been standing in Australia and is the sire of California graded stakes winners Lady Prancealot, Beau Recall, and Madam Dancealot, will shuttle from Australia to Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel. The arrangement will begin with the 2020 season. A son of Tamayuz—Mona Em, by Catrail, Sir Prancealot won three of six starts, racing only at Sir Prancealot 2 in 2012. His victories included the group 2 Doncaster Flying Childers Stakes and Sandown’s National Stakes. Several of Sir Prancealot’s foals have been imported to the U.S. and have won stakes. Beau Recall won the 2018 Royal Heroine Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita and the 2019 Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (G2T) at Churchill Downs. Madam Dancealot won the 2018 Santa Ana Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita and 2017 San Clemente Handicap (G2T) at Del Mar. Lady Prancealot won this year’s Honeymoon Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita. Ginger Nut won this year’s Limestone Turf Sprint Stakes at Keeneland. Nine of Sir Prancealot’s 13 starters in the U.S. have won. “We are very excited to bring Sir Prancealot to the U.S. and, more specifcally, to California,” said Adrian Gonzalez of Checkmate Thoroughbreds, who brokered the deal. Cal-bred Registration Now Digital With the Sept. 30 deadline to register 2018 foals as California-bred or California-sired fast approaching, the new digital foal certifcates ofered by Te Jockey Club will streamline the process even more. When the California Toroughbred Breeders Association receives the application and fee for Cal-bred and Cal-sired registration, a digital Cal-bred/Cal-sired sticker can be applied to the digital foal certifcate. No longer will you need to deal with a physical sticker and apply it to a paper registration certifcate. With a digital sticker, when you transfer the certifcate to a new owner, a sales company, or a racetrack, they will know that the horse is registered Cal-bred or Cal-sired. Te Jockey Club is issuing digital foal certifcates for horses born in 2018 and later. wner Phil Lebherz and trainer Jef Bonde traveled to the 2008 Washington Toroughbred Breeders’ Association yearling sale, never dreaming how pivotal that sale would be. Tey bought a couple of modestly priced youngsters, and Bonde trained both in California for Lebherz and Alan Klein.
Phil Lebherz’ Premier Thoroughbreds lands TOBA award as California’s 2018 State Breeder of the Year, thanks in part to his pride and joy, successful young stallion Smiling Tiger
Slew the Man, who cost $47,000, became a stakes winner at Emerald Downs and ultimately earned $173,445. Te $40,000 yearling, named Smiling Tiger, did even better. A half brother to Eclipse Award winner She’s a Tiger, Smiling Tiger earned $1,480,704. He became a multiple grade 1 winner, fnished third twice in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), and is developing into one of California’s leading sires. “People call me all the time, telling me what good Smiling Tiger babies they have,” said Lebherz. “We had 122 contracts for Tiger this year.” Lebherz had his own excitement with a homebred Smiling Tiger runner on opening day at Del Mar July 17. First-time starter Smiling Shirlee won by 21⁄4 lengths for Lebherz, Klein, and Rusty Brown. With the additional California-bred bonus, along with stallion and breeders awards, the victory was especially sweet. Smiling Tiger brought Lebherz a slew of awards at the California Toroughbred Breeders Association’s annual championship banquet this past February. Te stallion also played a major role in Lebherz’ Premier Toroughbreds’ being named the 2018 Toroughbred Owners and Breeders Association State Breeder of the Year for California. Lebherz will be among the honorees at the TOBA National Awards Dinner Sept. 7 at Fasig-Tipton in Lexington, Ky. “I’m proud to be recognized by Kentucky,” said Lebherz. “It’s the epitome of racing.” Smiling Tiger now stands at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga. He previously stood at Lebherz’ Premier Toroughbreds in Oakdale. Lebherz praised the hard work of the people at both farms, along with his farm manager, Dennis Yokum, and bloodstock agent Mersad Metanovic. Lebherz bought numerous mares to breed to Smiling Tiger and 20

give him a good start at stud. Klein is a partner in some of them. Metanovic selected the mares, including Perfect Feat and Tuscan Sunset. Tuscan Sunset was carrying Miss Sunset, a graded stakes-winning daughter of Into Mischief who was named champion California-bred older female of 2018. Perfect Feat, the 2018 California Broodmare of the Year, produced Spiced Perfection, the 2018 Calbred Horse of the Year, and Cruel Intention, Cal-bred champion 2-year-old male of 2018, both by Smiling Tiger. Lebherz and Klein raced Miss Sunset, a graded winner who earned $891,895 on the track and subsequently sold for $825,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November sale. Premier Toroughbreds bred Spiced Perfection and Cruel Intention, both sold at auction. A Kentucky-bred son of Hold Tat Tiger—Shandra Smiles, by Cahill Road, Smiling Tiger is not only doing well in California but has given back to Washington state as well. Washington-bred Baja Sur, a son of Smiling Tiger, was that state’s champion 2-year-old male in 2018 and has remained undefeated through his frst two starts, both stakes, in 2019. Smiling Tiger’s foals include Cal-bred Ima Happy Cat, a twotime stakes winner at Emerald Downs in Washington, and Ace Korea, champion 3-year-old male in Korea last year. “Tis has all been pretty exciting for us,” said Lebherz. “It’s hard to prove a stallion.” Lebherz not only enjoys seeing Smiling Tiger’s babies do well on the racetrack but frequently takes visitors to see the stallion at Harris Farms. “People love going out there,” said Lebherz. Tey get to see Smiling Tiger as well as some of his future stars.

Farrier Ben Craft was born for the business of horses

espite not having any plans to head to the Bluegrass State the week before the 2019 Kentucky Derby, longtime horseman Ben Craft found himself at Churchill Downs, holding the shank of race favorite Omaha Beach. Turf writers swarmed about and photographers snapped away, all contributing to a generally buoyant mood around the barn. Omaha Beach had galloped strongly, and the patch that farrier Craft had applied to his hoof was holding well.

Just days later, the story took a turn, as Omaha Beach was found to have an entrapped epiglottis. Trainer Richard Mandella’s best shot at a Derby victory was scratched, and Ben Craft was back in California, away from the furor. Tat’s horse racing, something Craft knows well. He grew up with one of the most encompassing introductions to the sport of any horseman, and has remained entrenched in the game his entire life. But to get to Churchill Downs on that May morning, Craft had to take a circuitous route. Te story traces back to 1955, when Craft’s grandfather Rex Ellsworth campaigned legendary California-bred Swaps. Te mighty runner, who counted the Kentucky Derby, Hollywood Gold Cup, and Washington Park Handicap among his big wins, was trained by future Hall of Famer Mesh Tenney. Craft said the two were “like brothers, one day apart in age.” Ellsworth was born frst, Nov. 15, 1907; Tenney came into the world Nov. 16. Tey grew up together as cattle ranchers in Arizona, got a taste for horse racing, and decided they could do it better. “Next thing you know, they’re winning all these races without ever leaving the cattle business,” Craft said. In 1955, Life magazine ran a feature on the two men, calling them Cowboy Race Kings and showcasing a photo of Tenney shoeing his own horses. Tat knowledge would one day be passed to Craft. Aside from National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame inductee Swaps, Ellsworth and Tenney teamed up to race Preakness hero Candy Spots and Santa Anita Derby winner Terrang, both Cal-breds. During these glory days, Ellsworth’s daughter Karen, the second daughter of Ellsworth and wife Nola, met and wed Bob Craft. “My father grew up in Ontario, Calif.,” the younger Craft said. “He went to the same high school and college as my mother as a chemical engineer major. My parents were dating or just married around the time of Swaps.” Although Craft himself wasn’t born yet during the Swaps era, he still saw plenty of class horses. He remembers Cal-bred Olden Times—winner of the 1961 Malibu and 1962 San Juan Capistrano among other races—as well as Cal-bred Prove It, who won the 1961 Santa Anita Handicap. And seeing good horses like those wasn’t the extent of his education. Craft grew up on a ranch in Chino, where his father had begun helping at the barn between jobs. “He had no clue about a horse, but he was very smart,” said Craft. “One day my grandfather said he needed 50 horses taken to Chicago. My father had never had an ofcial trainer’s license before that, but I remember being a little kid at the trailer park at Arlington, watching Chicago freworks on the Fourth of July.” Craft was ultimately raised on the same Chino ranch where Ellsworth and Tenney kept their cattle and equine stock. “I was working there doing everything with horses and cattle,” Craft said. “My cousins and I would go to the ranches in Arizona and do the cowboy thing: gathering cattle, branding them, castrating them, and getting them of to market. We always had a job and never had to go anywhere to work. If we wanted to make
some money, there was something to do.” Although Craft half-heartedly pursued trade school for construction, he always knew his career would be with horses. “My very frst job was watering down the junction where horses passed through at 7 or 8 years old, making 25 cents an hour. When I got a raise to 35 cents, I thought I was making big money! I grew up with every aspect of the business you can imagine.” Tat included shadowing veterinarians, breaking young horses, working in the breeding shed, learning about the feed mill, and becoming an exercise rider early on. “I went to Turf Paradise and galloped for my uncle. I got set up with my frst assistant trainer job. I went to Longacres with Kathy Walsh. I took a string to Agua Caliente and left there to train at Hollywood Park. Trough it all, I had always shod my own horses.” At just 10 years old, Craft was trimming broodmares on the ranch, eventually learning tricks of the trade from Tenney. Craft became so renowned for his “backup” work as a horseshoer that he was asked in his mid-20s to help proctor the test that grants licenses to aspiring farriers. “I helped do that for a while, and one day I said I should probably take the test for the formality of it. I had no intention of switching at the time.” But Craft had married his wife, Stacey— which he called “the best thing I ever did”—
One day I left the track as a trainer, and the next day I came back as a shoer. I’ve been shoeing ever since.” — Ben Craft
and she was “having another baby every time I turned around.” With fve daughters and a wife to support, Craft turned to shoeing full time. “One day I left the track as a trainer, and the next day I came back as a shoer. I’ve been shoeing ever since.” Craft has worked for the likes of trainers Willard Proctor, Henry Moreno, Wally Dollase, and Jerry Fanning. In 2000, he began working for trainer Richard Mandella. “I never lost the love of training, and the opportunity came to be Mandella’s assistant trainer,” said Craft. “Tat lasted one year, and part of the arrangement was that he let me shoe a horse here and there to make ends meet.”
At the time, Mandella’s barn included grade 2 winner Dixie Union, who would go on to win the 2000 Haskell Invitational (G1) and earn more than $1 million. After a year, Mandella asked Craft, “Why would you want this lifestyle?” Craft admitted he had been thinking about leaving, and Mandella helped him transition back to shoeing full time. “I’ve always maintained a relationship with him and done quarter cracks for him,” said Craft. “I really honed that skill while with Mandella. His patience is the key. He understands the value of patience.” Horses that Craft has shod for a variety of trainers include 1990 Eclipse Award champion grass horse Itsallgreektome, Kentucky Oaks (G1) heroine Lite Light,

I assumed he would have someone there to re-shoe him, but he told me to bring my tools. Putting on a new patch was strictly precaution and maintenance.” Te men went to the track with Omaha Beach hours later, where he galloped soundly in preparation for the Derby. “When he galloped by, we had big grins on our faces,” said Craft. “He couldn’t have looked any better than he did.” Although Mandella was quick with a quip after Omaha Beach’s defection— he jokingly chastised Craft for fxing Ben, far left, with his two brothers and their trainer dad, Bob, in the Del Mar winner’s circle in 1969 his feet but nicking him in the throat with his rasp—the two men have a solid Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Broc- ful patch is the preparation. he $201,755 San Clemente Stakes (G2T) featured a bonanza of pairs. Mucho Unusual and Apache Princess, the only two California-breds in the feld, fnished frst and second. Jockey Joel Rosario won both graded stakes on the card. And Mucho Unusual’s owner/breeder, George Krikorian, had two doubles: He bred Mucho Unusual and Big Returns, winner of the previous race, and was winning his second stakes of the meeting, his homebred Hollywood Hills having captured the July 18 Fleet Treat Stakes. “It’s great because these are Cal-breds,” said Krikorian.

Mucho Unusual is a Cal-bred by Mucho Macho Man. Her dam, the Calbred Unusual Heat mare Not Unusual, has also produced graded winner Big Score by Krikorian’s stallion Mr. Big, the sire of Big Returns. “We’ve got a couple of more foals coming from that mare—a yearling, Big Talker, and then another one that was born a couple of months ago,” said Krikorian. Tim Yakteen trains Mucho Unusual for Krikorian. “She’s been pretty versatile,” Yakteen said. Mucho Unusual showed enough talent to debut in the 2018 Generous Portion Stakes, and she fnished second. She ended her 2-year-old season with a win and another second, in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes. After a fourth in January, Yakteen switched Mucho Unusual to the turf, and she scored in two races, including the California Cup Oaks. Te San Clemente was her frst graded attempt. Clemente at a mile on the turf, Mucho Unusual trailed the 10-flly feld early. “She just didn’t show me a lot early, so I let her do her thing away from there,” said Rosario. Yakteen admitted to a little concern, saying, “I would have never imagined that we were going to come from dead last. Tat’s why you have somebody like that—they can make the judgment call.” At one point, the two Cal-breds were ninth and 10th. Kent Desormeaux on Apache Princess moved frst on the second turn, with Apache Princess getting to the lead in the stretch. Rosario swung Mucho Unusual fve wide, rallying to overtake Apache Princess and defeat her by a neck in 1:34.66. Over Emphasize fnished third. “Turning for home, I thought about going down inside,” said Rosario. “But she was making up ground, and I didn’t want to chance it. She had that nice acceleration through the stretch, and we got it.” Mucho Unusual raised her lifetime bankroll to $372,680 with the San Clemente victory, her fourth win in seven starts. “We’re really pleased with her efort,” said Yakteen. Rosario was winning his second stakes aboard Mucho Unusual. He also piloted her in the California Cup Oaks. Earlier in the day he had won the San Diego Handicap (G2) on Catalina Cruiser, a good day especially since Saratoga, where Rosario usually rides, had to cancel due to extreme heat.

Paul and Zillah Reddam, who bred and race Listing in the name of their Reddam Racing, have done this before. In 2015 Reddam Racing’s Cal-bred Ralis sallied forth to Saratoga and took home the trophy in the prestigious Hopeful Stakes (G1). Both Ralis and Listing are by the Reddams’ good sire Square Eddie. Listing didn’t surprise many bettors in the Quick Call, conducted over 51⁄2 furlongs on the turf. Te California-bred colt began his racing career in a stakes rather than a maiden race and has only once in nine starts dropped below the black-type level. New Yorkers frst saw Listing in the $500,000 Champagne Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park at a mile on the dirt last Oct. 6. He fnished unplaced after brushing the gate at the start and enduring a wide trip. He had since shown trainer Ben Cecil that he prefers sprinting on the turf, and thus he went of as the 7-5 favorite in the Quick Call. Listing didn’t get away completely cleanly in the Quick Call either, bumping with the horses on either side of him. Jockey Joel Rosario let him settle in on the rail, even though that put them next to last. “I just wanted to hold him together and try to move at the right time, and he did,” said Rosario. Tey saved ground along the inside, well Paul and Zillah Reddam’s Square Eddie is the sire of Cal-bred Saratoga graded winners Ralis and Listing behind Abyssinian’s early

Neverland Rock had a good lead in the stretch, but Listing closed ground relentlessly. “I got in between horses and he kicked home, and that was good,” said Rosario. Listing got to the wire a half-length in front of Elektronic, who nipped Neverland Rock by a neck for second. Listing completed the distance in 1:03.94 on the yielding turf. “Te turf is soft, but he was handling it fne,” said Rosario, who had ridden Listing once before when they were third in the April 6 Echo Eddie Stakes on the dirt. Te Reddams bred Listing from the Yonaguska mare Marquis Diamond. Te mare has produced fve starters, all winners, four by Square Eddie. Tose include her other two stakes winners, More Complexity and Green With Eddie. Marquis Diamond has a 2-year-old flly by Square Eddie named What a Family and was bred back to that stallion this year.

fter 20 years in the Quarter Horse business, Dar Hanson has made the seamless transition to Toroughbreds. He is enjoying a modicum of success thanks to a recent $100,000 California-bred flly sold at the Fasig-Tipton July yearling sale. More prosperity could be on the way, as Hanson has another set to go in the inaugural Fasig-Tipton California fall yearling sale Sept. 26. But long before he was sales prepping and selling Toroughbreds, Hanson was managing Ward River Ranch, one of the country’s premier cutting horse breeding farms. “I’ve been in the horse business my whole adult life,” Hanson said. “I was an apprentice farrier and met some people and started training cutting horses. I did that for a
few years. Ward River Ranch was the leading breeder of cowhorses in the country, and the largest cowhorse breeding farm on the West Coast. Tey sold it back in 2013, and I’ve leased it from the new owners.” Now called Hanson’s River Ranch, the 60-acre spread in Kingsburg, Calif., is still home to plenty of Quarter Horses, but also eight of Hanson’s own Toroughbred mares and horses on layup and being sales prepped. “I’ve probably got 12 weanlings this year,” Hanson said, “and I bred six or seven mares this year.” Buying broodmares in Kentucky and bringing them back to California to foal and be bred back to Golden State sires is Hanson’s game plan. He does it with the help of Checkmate Toroughbreds’ Adrian Gonzalez.

HOW TO DEAL WITH A COMMON OCCURRENCE IN ACTIVE HORSES
W
BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS
Dr. Scott McClure, of Midwest Equine Surgery and Sports Medicine, says these enlargements consist of extra fuid in the fexor tendon sheath. “Te frst question we generally need to ask is whether the horse has a windpuf or is the horse simply stocking up,” he said. “Some horses have swelling (edema) in the lower legs from standing around overnight (especially after exertion), and this can look a little bit like a windpuf.” Te stocked-up leg is due to poor circulation. As soon as the horse exercises and moves around more, this swelling disappears. “A windpuf is fuid in the tendon sheath, whereas the horse that stocks up has difuse edema in the lower leg and this is nothing to worry about,” said McClure. “Te other common cause of swelling would be fuid in the joint rather than the tendon sheath. In this situation, the flling/swelling will be in front of the suspensory ligament and around the front of the joint rather than windpufs toward the rear.” Confusion can arise regarding windpufs. Some people think they are swellings in the joint capsule, but the most common defnition of a windpuf is a stretched tendon sheath—where the digital fexor sheath covers the two tendons that go around the back of the fetlock. Tendons, especially where they glide over hard surfaces, are always lubricated to prevent any friction that might interfere with smooth movement. Te tendon is encased in a hose-like sheath that contains a small amount of lubricating fuid, and this tendon sheath has a synovial lining, just like a joint. If there’s swelling in this area, it generally means the sheath or something within the sheath has been stretched or injured and has created extra fuid. Te sheath bulges, creating the windpuf. Te “container” is stretched, and adequate lubrication can only be maintained if the enlarged pocket remains flled with fuid. Although it might vary in size from time to time, this area could be permanently stretched and the swelling might never completely disappear. Many horses have windpufs, especially on the hind legs. Most windpufs don’t cause pain. Tey are simply extra fuid,

indpufs are soft, fuid-flled enlargements on the sides of the fetlock joint toward the rear. Tese swellings might range from longstanding symptomless blemishes with no soreness or lameness to a more serious condition due to recent injury in which the horse is obviously lame.
A windpuff is a gel-like swelling behind the fetlock caused by extra fuid created by a stretched or injured tendon
creating a soft enlargement. “If there is any heat, pain, or lameness associated with the swelling, there is something pathologic that needs to be addressed,” said McClure. Windpufs might be caused by an acute insult or trauma. Te tendon sheath becomes stretched a bit, allowing for extra accumulation of fuid, but the horse is not lame. “Tose swellings are generally not a problem,” said McClure. “But if there are signs of heat, pain, or lameness, or the horse reacts positive to a fexion test, this means there is infammation and damage to the tendon sheath.” In this situation, you need a diagnosis to know how best to treat this condition. “We sometimes see windpufs in horses that have some kind of chronic tendon problem, with the fetlock joints dropping down toward the ground,” said McClure. “Tis can be due to degeneration and chronic fexor tendon issues. Horses that tend to drop down too far in the ankles when placing weight on the leg may stretch the tendon sheaths, leading to windpufs. Tey may not be lame at frst, but this is an early sign that there is something worse going on. “Te frst thing you might notice are the windpufs. But on further examination, you may discover some degeneration of the suspensory ligament and fexor tendons.” Tis is a much more serious problem. By contrast, many athletic horses end up with windpufs just

TREATMENT
If you notice one is bigger than the other, initial frst aid treatment can consist of icing the leg or cold hosing, and wrapping. Tese steps, along with rest and confnement so the horse won’t be using the leg, 42
can help keep the problem from getting worse. Treat it like you would a human’s sprained ankle or muscle injury. What might have happened is a hyperextension of the fetlock joint, pulling those tendons, or a twist or sprain of structures around that tendon sheath. Along with cold therapy and wrapping, you can also use a topical anti-infammatory medication such as Surpass. Tis can be very helpful as part of the frst-aid treatment. Icing
“If there’s an annular ligament issue, a common way to deal with this is to transect the ligament to release the pressure, similar to carpal canal syndrome in which you release it so the tendon has more room,” said McClure. “If there is a superfcial or deep digital fexor tendinitis or infammation in those tendons, sometimes we just treat the tendon sheath to eliminate the infammation. Tere are many things we can use for managing tendinitis, including PRP (platelet rich plasma), anti-infammatory drugs, etc. “Hopefully, the horse just has a mild synovitis, which ends up being a simple blemish, and then he will be fne.” Te fetlock joints in that situation are merely enlarged with soft lumps toward the rear. “Many horses do develop windpufs. Some will have these enlargements appear after hard workouts, and then the swellings resolve. If the enlargements persist, it may be worth having your veterinarian take a look. If the horse is showing any lameness associated with the swelling, it is imperative to have it evaluated to determine if there are more severe underlying problems.” GETTY IMAGES
from strain and stress, but with no serious damage. In these cases the enlargements are just blemishes. “Even though the horse isn’t lame and not showing much sign of damage, just the fact that the windpufs are there is an indication that at some point there was excessive strain,” said McClure. “It’s something that should be watched and monitored. Today it might be just a little bit of synovial efusion, but on down the road it might progress into more severe synovitis, tendon disease, or annular ligament disease. It may be kind of a warning sign.” Te key to whether windpufs are a problem is whether they are symmetrical swellings. Some horses have windpufs on all four legs, or on both hind legs, where there is efusion in the tendon sheath. If they are symmetrical, this is usually less cause for concern. Many horses have a little flling in the sheath and no symptoms of heat or soreness/lameness. If the swelling popped up suddenly, however, it should be checked, especially if both legs were the same and then one becomes pufer than the other. If they are not symmetrical—such as a little fuid in one but the other is much larger—this usually indicates a problem, such as an acute injury in that leg. If a horse has chronic windpufs, it is important to notice whether one becomes obviously larger. Tere can be increased fuid in one side versus the other without an obvious lameness. But this does not necessarily mean there are not active infammation and potential injury in the one that’s more swollen. Have a veterinarian check the leg if you notice more swelling. “If a horse has windpufs, it may be a good idea to have the area examined with ultrasound, to look at the superfcial and the deep digital fexor tendon, annular ligament, suspensory ligament, etc.,” said McClure. “With ultrasound you can get a better idea if there is something seriously wrong, or just a little bit of extra fuid in the tendon sheath.”
Wrapping, along with icing, can be very important early in the treatment of windpuffs
and wrapping can be very important, early on, especially if there is heat in that area. Tis will often resolve the problem if it’s a simple strain or sprain. If there are more serious problems, they should be treated appropriately. “If there is a problem with the annular ligament, we often use anti-infammatory drugs, or may actually cut the ligament,” said McClure. “If there are problems with the tendon, there are several ways to manage tendinitis—depending on the degree of severity. Suspensory branch degeneration is a chronic disease condition that is not reversible. Te tenosynovitis is giving an early clue about a more severe, ongoing problem.” If it’s an athletic horse that the owner wants to try to treat so the horse can hopefully recover and continue a performance career, the treatment will depend on what is diagnosed and identifed with the ultrasound examination.

IMPORTANCE OF PROPER DIAGNOSIS
Dr. Gary Baxter, hospital director at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., says some horses have chronic problems within the tendon sheath. “With ultrasound we may be able to see a mass of chronic synovial tissue—extra tissue buildup,” Baxter said. “Tese might occur in windpufs that have been present for months or years. Tese soft-tissue masses within the sheath may cause pain with the movement of the tendon.” Tese should be removed so that the horse can become sound. “Te best thing to do in these situations is to go into the sheath with an arthroscope. Tis is usually referred to as tenoscopy, and is what we often do with horses with chronic, problematic windpufs, to look around in there and evaluate the tendon and look for soft-tissue masses or what else may be contributing to the problem. “Our ability to diagnose problems within the sheath has improved, and we are fnding more reasons for fuid in the tendon sheaths. Because we are more able to accurately diagnose these, we are now

3 EXAMPLES OF WINDPUFFS
Windpuffs can occur in one or all four legs at any given time; chronic windpuffs might require further diagnosis to investigate the cause
treating them a bit diferently—trying to address the primary problem, such as a tendon problem, rather than just trying to cut the annular ligament and make the canal bigger. “We are trying to address the injury itself so we don’t need to do the annular ligament surgery in some horses. If we cut the annular ligament, we wonder if we haven’t been proactive enough in trying to fgure it out and have a proper diagnosis. “We generally recommend using an arthroscope to take a look in there. We do this on more horses now than we did 15 years ago.” Tis can help give a more defnitive diagnosis, and treatment can often be accomplished at the same time. Tis is often the best option with a chronic case that hasn’t responded to conservative treatment. “Sometimes you can’t see the tendon injuries unless you look inside with the arthroscope, because they are not always visible on ultrasound; sometimes we see them better with the arthroscope,” said Baxter. “Tis can be the advantage of going this route, particularly if a horse is lame or has been lame for an extended period. We recommend taking a look with the arthroscope and being able to address the primary problem, as well as cut the annular ligament if this is deemed necessary.” For diagnosis, the veterinarian may just desensitize the tendon sheath. Tis is often the best way to diagnose whether the extra fuid is actually causing a problem. “Instead of doing a regional nerve block, if the horse has fuid in the tendon sheath, we put a needle in, aspirate a little fuid to
look at, then inject a local anesthetic directly into the tendon sheath (the area of pain) to see if this relieves the pain,” said Baxter. “Tis would give us the most specifc way to document that this is the area of lameness. If we are suspicious that this is the problem, we’ll desensitize just the sheath, rather than doing a regional nerve block.
In the past we generally thought windpufs were not very signifcant. But now we realize we have to look at them to know if the fuid in the tendon sheath is telling us there is a problem.” — Dr. Gary Baxter
A recent study showed this to be very effective and specifc because the anesthetic does not difuse out anywhere or give false positives. “Better diagnostic methods have improved our ability to fgure out what the problem is within the sheath. It is a fairly large structure that goes from the bottom third of the cannon bone all the way down to just above the heel bulbs. Tere is a lot of length and multiple tissues within the sheath where things could be injured. Most injuries are minor and the fuid can go up and down and not cause any lameness. But there are some instances where it causes major problems. “In most windpufs, there are no bony
abnormalities. Whether you need to take radiographs would probably depend on how long the leg has been afected. Most of the time, radiographs can be completely normal, yet the horse still had lots of fuid distension in the tendon sheath because it’s just a soft-tissue injury. “Tis is an area we can also use MRI, if necessary. We can do a pretty good job with ultrasound and tenoscopy, for diagnosis, but you could document more potential problems in the tendon sheath with an MRI. In a problematic case, this could help us fgure it out. “Some cases can be problematic, with chronic swelling, chronic tendinitis. Some of these horses can be quite lame. Tese would be the ones in which we’d use a more aggressive approach, such as tenoscopy. Whether you’d do an MRI before the surgery might depend on the case. Te owner may not be able to aford to do both. If you have to do one or the other, I’d rather do the surgery because then I could usually fx the problem at the same time I’m looking inside the sheath with the arthroscope.” If this didn’t resolve it, an MRI could be the next step, to fnd out more about what’s going on inside the leg. Some people might use a CT scan if they don’t have access to MRI. “In the past we generally thought windpufs were not very signifcant,” said Baxter. “But now we realize we have to look at them, to know if the fuid in the tendon sheath is telling us there is a problem in there. In some cases, we’d want to be more proactive in our diagnosing and preventing it from getting any worse.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through July 21, 2019.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
