Changes to California Racing Dates Schedule At its August meeting the California Horse Racing Board unanimously approved 2020 racing dates for Southern California that differs from previous years. Santa Anita, Del Mar, and the Thoroughbred Owners of California jointly presented the calendar to the board. The four blocks of racing dates and simulcast-only dates begin at Santa Anita Dec. 26, 2019, running through June 23, 2020. That is followed by Del Mar (July 5-Sept. 8), back to Santa Anita (Sept. 9-Oct. 27), and then Del Mar (Oct. 28-Dec. 1). The Santa Anita winter-spring dates include 12 days that must be taken off during that six-month stretch. Those dates are not specifically listed, as the CHRB said it intends to give Santa Anita flexibility to cancel racing due to severe weather, insufficient entries, or other circumstances. Santa Anita must receive approval from the CHRB chairman or executive director before any cancellations. Representatives from Los Alamitos, which has been racing the former Fairplex Park dates in September along with dates in July and December, and the California Thoroughbred Trainers voiced concerns during the meeting that they were not included in talks to develop the new calendar. Alan Balch of CTT and Dr. Ed Allred and Jack Liebau of Los Alamitos asked the CHRB to table the dates proposal for more discussion, but the CHRB approved the dates. The remainder of the Southern California calendar, which will include Los Alamitos, was to be discussed at a public meeting of the CHRB dates committee along with schedules for Northern California, harness racing, and Quarter Horse racing.

HISTORY STAR NICHOLAS turned around a five-race losing streak to capture the $104,330 Windy Sands Handicap at Del Mar Sept. 5, 2009. The California-bred’s most recent win had come in the previous year’s On Trust Handicap. In the one-mile Windy Sands, named for the prominent California sire, Star Nicholas and jockey Michael Baze raced in fourth for most of the race, putting on a huge run in the stretch to eke out a neck victory over Monzante, with Tamborim third. Star Nicholas stopped the timer in 1:37.53 on Polytrack. Pete Cristofi and Bob Nugent bred 6-year-old Star Nicholas (Poteen—Viznaga, by Royal Roberto). Peter Eurton trained him for a partnership headed by King Max Farms that included Nugent.

WRONA NAMED LOS ALAMITOS ANNOUNCER Michael Wrona has been named the full-time track announcer at Los Alamitos for both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse meetings. He will begin his Thoroughbred duties with the winter December meeting and then assume the full-time duties beginning with the night Quarter Horse meeting that starts Dec. 27. Longtime Los Alamitos announcer Ed Burgart is retiring from the announcer’s booth. Australian native Wrona is no stranger to California announcing as he has called at Hollywood Park, Santa Anita, Golden Gate Fields, Bay Meadows, and several fair meetings. “It’s a great honor to be selected as Ed Burgart’s successor at Los Alamitos,” Wrona said. “However, it’s also a somewhat daunting task because Ed personifies Los Al and is truly irreplaceable.”

He had previously taken the Khaled Stakes at Hollywood Park and an allowance race at Del Mar. With Russell Baze aboard and trained by Wally Dollase, Journalism stalked the pace of Firm Pledge through most of the 11⁄16 miles, getting up to beat that rival by a nose in 1:40.94. Old English Rancho bred the 6-year-old gelded son of Publicity—Knowledgeable Lady, by Tree of Knowledge. Dr. Alina Vale, who received a scholarship from the California Thoroughbred Foundation in 2008, and Dr. Laurie Bohannon, the CTF Louis R. Rowan Fellowship recipient of 2012, are putting their veterinary experiences to good use at Del Mar. Drs. Vale and Bohannon were named as the two monitoring veterinarians during the Dr. Alina Vale, left, and Dr. Laurie Bohannon summer meeting. They are part of a seven-vet team that oversees the safety of the horses stabled and competing at the racetrack. In the mornings, Drs. Vale and Bohannon pay close attention to the horses on the track from perches on towers just past the finish line and on the backstretch near the five-eighths pole. “We’re trying to identify horses that aren’t traveling well,” said Dr. Vale. “Horses constantly adapt their skeletons to the pressures put on them in training, and if we can detect minor injuries before they become major ones, then that will make things much safer for the horses and riders.” Dr. Vale rode retired racehorses as a youngster and is a former Ride and Tie champion. She graduated from the University of California, Davis with a master’s degree in veterinary forensics. She has worked at veterinary hospitals in Kentucky and spent three years working in Dubai. Dr. Bohannon is a Colorado State University graduate with an advanced degree in veterinary surgery from U.C. Davis. She has competed in Ride and Tie and endurance events, totaling more than 7,000 miles on horseback.

Foal Registration

GOING DIGITAL A NEW ERA DAWNS FOR FOAL REGISTRATION

W

ith the yearling sales rapidly approaching, breeders should be aware that foals of 2018 are the first ones whose registration certificates from The Jockey Club will be digital, rather than paper copies. The Jockey Club notes that breeders, as well as those who act as agents for breeders, who do not already have an Interactive Registration account should sign up for one at registry.jockeyclub.com. The Jockey Club has also posted the following frequently asked questions regarding digital certificates. 1. How will I receive my Digital Certificate(s)? When you log on to your Jockey Club Interactive Registration account, you will see an option under DIGITAL CERTIFICATES labeled CERTIFICATE MANAGEMENT that will display the certificates currently assigned to your Interactive Registration account.

2. Who is assigned the Digital Certificate? Digital Certificates are assigned to a Certificate Manager, a person or entity authorized to control the disposition of a Digital Certificate. The Certificate Manager may or may not be the owner of the horse. 3. How will I forward my Digital Certificate to a sales company, racetrack, or other entity that requires the Certificate of Foal Registration? The Certificate Manager will be able to assign the certificate to another party by selecting the appropriate entity or person, clicking the button that says “Assign Certificate,” and then following the prompts to complete the assignment. 4. How will I know when a Digital Certificate has been assigned to my account? An email notification will be sent shortly after a digital certificate(s) has been assigned to your Interactive Registration account. 5. Will all of my horses be issued a Digital Certificate? Foals of 2018 and after will be issued Digital Certificates.

www.ctba.com

6. What if a mistake was made when assigning a Digital Certificate? If a mistake was made when assigning a Digital Certificate, the assignor should contact The Jockey Club for assistance at inquiries@jockeyclub.com. 7. How can I determine the current Digital Certificate Manager of a Thoroughbred? When you log on to your Jockey Club Interactive Registration account, you will see an option under REGISTRATION labeled CHECK REGISTRATION STATUS that will display the current Digital Certificate Manager for foals of 2018 and later. 8. Does the ownership data recorded with the assignment of a Digital Certificate prove title to the horse? No. The Jockey Club is a pedigree registry for Thoroughbred horses, not an ownership or title registry. Accordingly, any information presented by The Jockey Club concerning the “owner” of a horse is based solely upon information provided by others and is in no way warranted or otherwise offered by The Jockey Club as being a representation of who the actual owner or title holder of a particular Thoroughbred is.

erendipity played a major role in California’s getting the proven stallion Sir Prancealot, but Adrian Gonzalez and Clay Murdock helped it along.

Foaled in Ireland, Sir Prancealot (Tamayuz—Mona Em, by Catrail) raced in England and France for one season, at 2 in 2012. He won three of six starts, includ18

ing the Doncaster Flying Childers Stakes (G2) in England. In France, he finished second in the Prix Robert Papin (G2) and fourth in the Darley Prix Morny (G1). Retired to stud in Ireland, Sir Prancealot was a leading first-season sire in Great Britain in 2016. He moved to Australia in 2017, standing at Cornerstone Stud. Then an odd thing happened: Several of Sir Prancealot’s runners turned up in California, and they started winning stakes. “Nick Cosato of Slam Dunk Racing and David Meah jumped on Sir Prancealot right away,” said Gonzalez. Meah and Lillingston Bloodstock had purchased a 2-year-old group 3-winning filly by Sir Prancealot named Madam

Dancealot at the 2016 Goffs Champions Sale in Ireland for €260,000. Meah noted at the time that Sir Prancealot was a “very, very hot first-season sire.” Richard Baltas trained Madam Dancealot in California for Slam Dunk Racing. She won the 2018 Santa Ana Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita and the 2017 San Clemente Handicap (G2T) at Del Mar, eventually earning $552,775. Also in 2016, Slam Dunk privately purchased Beau Recall, another daughter of Sir Prancealot, after her second start in Ireland. Cosato campaigns her in partnership with Medallion Racing. Simon Callaghan trained Beau Recall in California, where she won the 2018 Royal Heroine

She won the May 4 Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (G2T), and she swooped in at Del Mar to snag the Aug. 3 Yellow Ribbon Handicap (G2T). Beau Recall is closing in on $1 million in earnings. In the meantime, Meah bought Magic Garden, a half sister to Madam Beau Recall Dancealot, for $35,000 at the 2017 Keeneland fall mixed sale in foal to Sir Prancealot. Cosato and Meah own her and board the mare at Gonzalez’ Checkmate Thoroughbreds in Paso Robles, where she foaled a Sir Prancealot filly. “That foal is now a yearling,” said Gonzalez. “So for the last couple of years, we’ve had this Cal-bred Irish filly running around here. That was unique and got me to following Sir Prancealot.” Lady Prancealot Hannah Mathiesen, another Gonzalez client, traveled to Australia to work for a trainer. “At a sale there, she met the guys who had Sir Prancealot,” said Gonzalez. “She told them that she knew somebody with a Sir Prancealot in California.” Cornerstone Stud was interested in shuttling Sir Prancealot to the Northern Hemisphere, so that conversation sparked what ultimately became a deal to bring the stallion to California. “Sam Pritchard-Gordon from Cornerstone Stud reached out to me to see if we’d be interested in putting something together,” said Gonzalez. Gonzalez and Murdock of Rancho San Miguel had already worked together to syndicate Danzing Candy and stand him at Rancho San Miguel. That graded stakes-winning son of Twirling Candy Madam Dancealot proved very popular. Murdock said that the stallion covered 129 mares his first season and 115 his second. finishes the Southern Hemisphere breeding season. “The shares that we wanted to sell off sold in about two days,” said Murdock. “It just exploded. People from Kentucky, Florida, all over were calling wanting to know about him.” Murdock said that several leading California breeders have purchased shares in Sir Prancealot. “I’ve also got breeders who don’t breed in California who are now going to move mares from Kentucky out here to breed to him,” said Murdock. Shareholders can breed two mares per share for the first three seasons and one each year thereafter. Sir Prancealot will also be available for breeders who don’t own shares, his California stud fee still to be determined. “I think for California breeding, this news is huge,” said Murdock. “Adrian and I really believe that the future of California is in getting these types of stallions.” Sir Prancealot has continued to do well as a sire with European imports to the U.S. For a large partnership, Baltas trains 3-year-old Lady Prancealot, winner of this year’s Honeymoon Stakes (G3T). The filly finished third to Cambier Parc and Hidden Message in the Aug. 17 Del Mar Oaks Presented by The Jockey Club (G1T) and has earned $255,341. John Sadler trains another 3-year-old daughter of Sir Prancealot named Ginger Nut for Hronis Racing. Ginger Nut won this year’s Limestone Turf Sprint Stakes at Keeneland. Michael House owns the 3-year-old Sir Prancealot filly Mischiffie, who broke her maiden at Del Mar Aug. 15. Most stallions that shuttle stand in Kentucky or Europe during the Northern Hemisphere breeding season. But Sir Prancealot’s runners seem to be thriving on the firmer turf courses in California. “California’s my home, and this is where we wanted to keep him,” said Gonzalez. “Having these good stallions could be like a magnet, pulling some nice mares here. The Cal-bred money is good and the racing is good, so it’s a good opportunity.”

In the days leading up to the Aug. 9 Solana Beach, O’Neill’s assistant, Leandro Mora, assessed their chances, saying, “One has speed, and the other closes. Don’t Sell usually runs short, which is why I think she’ll be the speed of the race, and Lynne’s Legacy is more of a router.” Don’t Sell raced in third when Mo See Cal sprinted to the lead and turned in a first quarter-mile of :22.80. disqualified to third, moving Big Returns into first. Big Returns made a major splash during the first half of the Del Mar meeting. He broke his maiden there in his racing debut by an impressive 71⁄4 lengths July 20. Two weeks later, he lined up with six other 2-year-old Cal-breds and California-sired runners for the $100,351 Graduation and won again, though this time the colt encountered more challenges. Bettors backed Big Returns, sending him off as the 6-5 favorite under jockey Ruben Fuentes. Big Returns bobbled a little right after the start, but he settled nicely for Fuentes on the rail in fourth. As the leaders vied for the lead on the turn and into the stretch, Fuentes looked for room for Big Returns, who was full of run. Just as Fuentes spied a hole, Square Deal on the outside began coming in. Square Deal crowded Pas de Panique, causing him to close the hole. Fuentes had to switch Big Returns to the outside, and Pas de Panique had to steady off of Square Deal. Square Deal finished first, 13⁄4 lengths ahead of Big Returns, in 1:06.34 for 51⁄2 furlongs. Pas de Panique finished third, 11⁄2 lengths behind Big Returns. The stewards posted the inquiry sign and disqualified Square Deal to third, moving Big Returns into first and Pas de Panique into second. Abel Cedillo on Pas de Panique said that the incident cost him second. “My horse was running perfect,” said the rider, “and then he came over and I had to check.” Luis Mendez trains Big Returns for owner William Peeples. “The rider had to bring him up, big time, and that caused him to lose momentum,” said Mendez. “He had space to go through, but had to pull up. They did the right thing.” Added Fuentes, “I had to shift out and lose ground.” 22

It was a good deal for everybody, as Bulletproof One proceeded to score in the July 31 CTBA Stakes for her new ownership group, which has expanded to include Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Wachtel Stable. olds nominated to the $147,000 Real Good Deal Stakes July 27 lined up to face the starter. It was likely a testament to the quality of Cruel Intention, the 7-10 favorite from the powerful Bob Baffert stable. Cruel Intention won both of his starts at 2 in 2018 to be voted the champion Cal-bred 2-year-old male. “Second is a lot of money and pays a lot of bills,” Alexander said. Lieutenant Dan, Alexander’s entry, didn’t have to settle for second money of $28,500. He vanquished the field to win, earning $85,500. Cruel Intention was making his second start of 2019 in the seven-furlong Real Good Deal, while Lieutenant Dan had started seven times this year following just one race as a 2-year-old. Trained by Steve Miyadi, Lieutenant Dan broke his maiden by eight lengths and became a stakes winner in the April 6 Echo Eddie Stakes at 6 1⁄2 furlongs on the dirt at Santa Anita. “We tried the turf, and he ran pretty well,” said Alexander. “He got beat a nose and a nose in the Silky Sullivan, and without a little traffic he could have been the nose in front. in the mile and an eighth race (the June 22 Snow Chief Stakes), he really didn’t quit.” In the Snow Chief, Lieutenant Dan finished third behind Our Silver Oak and Irish Heatwave. Drayden Van Dyke rode Lieutenant Dan for the first time in the Real Good Deal. “The key with him is to get him to switch leads properly,” said Van Dyke. “I was on him for his most recent work, and we were working on that.” Cruel Intention dashed to the lead in the Real Good Deal, and Lieutenant Dan, from the rail, stuck with him. Cruel Intention recorded fractions of :21.91 for the first quarter-mile and :44.62 for a half-mile. “We were going a little fast in the beginning,” said Van Dyke, “but he was comfortable.” On the turn, it looked as if Cruel Intention had put away Lieutenant Dan, but Alexander’s horse came back on. “He’s done that before,” said Alexander. “He’s won from the rail and got the heat the whole way. He just changed leads and pulled off.” Lieutenant Dan scored by three

Grecian Fire improved upon his 2018 California Dreamin’ Stakes performance, when he finished second. This time around, despite a rough trip, he triumphed for the Nishes, who bred and race him in the name of KMN Racing. Now 5, Grecian Fire is having his best year ever. The Cal-bred first became a stakes winner at 3 in 2017, when he captured the Alcatraz Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. While he usually picks up a check, he didn’t add a second stakes win until this year, in the All American Stakes (G3) at Golden Gate Fields when trained by Jerry Hollendorfer. Keith Desormeaux took over Grecian Fire’s training for the $151,755 California Dreamin’ July 26. Facing 10 rivals, Grecian Fire went off as the 3-1 favorite with Mike Smith aboard. Racing well back early, Grecian Fire was beginning to make up ground when he had to steady sharply near the quarter pole. “My goodness, I got hit hard on the turn there,” said Smith. “The six horse (The Hunted) came over and hit me hard. The Hunted finished seventh, and after an inquiry the stewards determined that The Hunted bothered Grecian Fire and sixth-place Ashleyluvssugar. Since those two outfinished The Hunted, there was no disqualification. “I’ve never seen anything like that,” said Keith Desormeaux. “In a stake, how do you recover from something like that and close the way he did?” Desormeaux also trains Apache Princess for the Nishes. Earlier this year, that Cal-bred 3-year-old filly won the Sweet Life Stakes (G3). A week before the California Dreamin’, Apache Princess finished second to fellow Cal-bred Mucho Unusual in the San Clemente Stakes (G2T). The Nishes bred Grecian Fire, a son of Unusual Heat, from the Kitten’s Joy mare Maddie’s Odyssey, who has also produced Sneaking Out for them. Sneaking Out won this year’s Evening Jewel Stakes and has finished second in three subsequent stakes.

Bloodstock agents Alex Solis II and Jason Litt purchased Maddie’s Odyssey for the Nishes for $14,500 at the 2012 Keeneland fall mixed sale. The mare was in foal to Drosselmeyer at the time.

Grecian Fire finished third in the Aug. 18 Del Mar Mile (G2T) to raise his lifetime record to six wins in 26 starts, with two seconds and six thirds, for earnings of $408,202.

alifornia-breds victorious at the highest level of competition are always cause for celebration. But Pacific Classic weekend saw a spectacular sweep, with Cal-breds winning a pair of grade 2 events at Del Mar. Acclimate took the $200,000 Del Mar Handicap Presented by The Japan Racing Association (G2T) Aug. 17. Twenty-four hours later Prince Earl won the $201,755 Del Mar Mile Handicap (G2T) off a ninemonth layoff. Both horses are trained by Phil D’Amato, and both have ties to the late California stallion Unusual Heat.

Acclimate is a 5-year-old gelded son of Acclamation—Knows No Bounds, by Boundary, and is the fourth winner from five starters for his dam. Acclamation, the Eclipse Award champion older male and a grade 1 winner on two surfaces at Del Mar in 2011, is a son of Unusual Heat. The late E.W. (Buddy) Johnston and his wife, Judy, campaigned Acclamation with daughter Mary and son-in-law Peter Hilvers. Now Acclimate runs for the Ellwood Johnston Trust and Tim Henry’s Timmy Time Racing.

“I would love to tell you I thought we could win, but I did not,” Henry admitted after the race. “Those were some very good horses we beat.” Acclimate went to the lead early in the 13⁄8-mile race, holding the likes of Ritzy A. P. and seven-time grade 2 winner Itsinthepost at bay before opening up in the stretch under jockey Florent Geroux. They scored by a length, with Oscar Dominguez finishing second and Ritzy A. P. third, in 2:12.71. D’Amato was winning the race for the third consecutive year and the fifth time in the last six editions. The horse to break his streak was popular Cal-bred millionaire Ashleyluvssugar, who scored in 2016 while D’Amato-trained Metaboss finished second. Henry, on hand with a host of family and friends despite not being confident about the horse’s chances, went to $30,000 to acquire Acclimate, bred by Old English Rancho and Sal and Patsy Berumen, out of the 2015 Barretts October yearling sale. “The Johnstons came back in after I bought him,” Henry said. Acclimate broke his maiden at the $20,000 level, but he has steadily improved throughout his career, winning six of 16 starts. He took the $100,702 San Juan Capistrano (G3T) in June, but a surprisingly poor effort in the $151,755 California Dreamin’ Stakes against state-breds left him as the 7-1 fourth choice in the Del Mar Handicap.

Del Mar Handicap and Del Mar Mile

Cal-bred Prince Earl rules the grade 2 Del Mar Mile Handicap by 31⁄4 lengths

“He really did run awesome,” Henry said. “I’m still smiling. He’s definitely the best I’ve owned.” Henry has only owned two horses. The other is the winning Cal-bred son of Acclamation Kings River King. That runner earned $61,426 in seven starts, while Acclimate is at $325,872 and is eyeing a start in the John Henry Turf Championship (G2T) at Santa Anita Sept. 28. PRINCE EARL’S DEL MAR MILE

Old Bones Racing Stable and Todd Marshall’s Prince Earl is by the late Paddy O’Prado and out of the Unusual Heat mare Soo Steamy. He was a sharp 3-year-old, breaking his maiden first out and adding an allowance win at Del Mar before finishing fourth, beaten just 31⁄4 lengths, in the $302,760 Hollywood Derby (G1T) to end his 2018 season. Prince Earl hadn’t run since but was working very well for a return. “When I saw him on the nomination list for this race, I thought Phil must have been really impressed with the way he was working,” said Harris Auerbach, whose mother, Madeline, co-bred Prince Earl with Harris Farms. The Auerbachs were worried they might face Prince Earl with their runner The Hunted, another son of Unusual Heat, in the California Dreamin’, but D’Amato rerouted Prince Earl to the grade 2 event rather than the stakes for Cal-breds. 28

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED

“He’s one of the best horses we ever bred,” Auerbach said. “Phil has always thought highly of him and has been telling us that all along.” But Prince Earl had a rough start in life when his dam, Soo Steamy, died of strangles while Prince Earl was still nursing. “He was raised partially on a nursemare,” Auerbach explained. The loss hit hard as Soo Steamy’s only other foal, a Coil gelding named Slim, was also a winner. The mare had been sent from California to Kentucky solely to fulfill a Share the Upside contract with Spendthrift Farm stallion Paddy O’Prado, who later was sent to Turkey for stallion duty and ultimately died early as well. Soo Steamy was well regarded as a racehorse,

but Auerbach noted she was perpetually 250 pounds overweight and couldn’t stay sound. “Madeline and I were always very high on her as a broodmare prospect,” Auerbach said. “We thought she was a good physical for Paddy O’Prado.” Despite the setback of losing his dam early in his life, Prince Earl has come through with three wins in five starts for earnings of $224,778. In the Del Mar Mile he sat sixth in a 10-horse field under jockey Geovanni Franco, then rallied between horses to get up by three-quarters of a length over Sharp Samurai and Grecian Fire, with grade 1 winners Ohio fourth and Bowies Hero, who was favored, fifth. Grade 1 winners What a View (seventh) and Bolo (eighth) were also part of the star-studded field. The final time for the one-mile distance was 1:33.13. It was the first Cal-bred win in the Del Mar Mile since Caracortado took the race in 2011, capping a back-to-back streak as Enriched had won it in 2010. Although he died in 2017, the impact of leading California stallion Unusual Heat is still felt on a virtually daily basis. The Auerbachs played crucial roles in the development of the stallion. “For a grandson of Unusual Heat to win the Del Mar Handicap on Saturday with Acclimate and another grandson from the dam side to win the Del Mar Mile on Sunday with Prince Earl was really gratifying to both Madeline and me,” said Harris.

The connections of Prince Earl have plenty to celebrate after the 4-year-old gelding makes his first start following a nine-month layoff a graded stakes victory

Fasig-Tipton Yearling Sale Preview

BUILDING ON SUCCESS PLENTY OF WELL-BRED CAL-BREDS ON OFFER BY TRACY GANTZ

C

alifornia breeders and consignors are stepping up in a big way to support the inaugural Fasig-Tipton fall yearling sale. A total of 285 yearlings have been entered in the sale, which will be held Sept. 26, beginning at noon, at Fairplex in Pomona. “Fasig-Tipton is excited to conduct our first yearling sale since we have returned to the California marketplace,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning Jr. “Our inaugural 2-year-old sale at Santa Anita this past June was an excellent launching point, and we look forward to building on that success in the yearling market.” The catalog will feature a plethora of California-breds, both by California sires and by outside stallions. In addition, it contains a complimentary group of horses bred outside of the state, giving buyers a variety to choose from. With the lucrative California incentive program, trainers and agents will likely be looking for good Calbred prospects. Six consignors are bringing 20 or more to the sale: Checkmate Thoroughbreds, Harris Farms, Havens Bloodstock Agency Inc., Lovacres Ranch, McCarthy Bloodstock, and Woodbridge Farm. Andy Havens leads in numbers with 56. Those include 12 for Liberty Road Stables, all but one of those by the leading California sire U S Ranger. The Havens group also in-

cludes yearlings by leading California sires Smiling Tiger and Grazen. Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch has entered 25 yearlings, all Cal-breds. The group includes hip #130, a Cal-bred son of Will Take Charge out of Lovingier’s Cal-bred champion Lost Bus. The mare is a graded stakes winner and earner of $412,818. Hip #9 is a daughter of Bodemeister out of a half sister to the dam of Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra. John Harris’ Harris Farms has 22 cataloged, many by Mr. Big, who stands at the Coalinga farm. One of those is hip #145, a colt out of the good Cal-bred mare Memorette, a graded stakes winner and earner of $896,753. Adrian Gonzalez’ Checkmate Thor-

oughbreds has a group that includes hip #68, a Cal-bred daughter of Animal Kingdom out of multiple grade 1 winner Elloluv. Woodbridge’s consignment features several by Smiling Tiger. Kim McCarthy’s McCarthy Bloodstock has plenty of sire power, from California’s Smiling Tiger, Square Eddie, Grazen, and Acclamation to such Kentucky stallions as Awesome Again and Hard Spun. Tom Bachman’s Fairview has 11 in the catalog by such California sires as Smiling Tiger and Square Eddie as well as by Kentucky stallions. Hip #25 is a Cal-bred son of Goldencents out of the Cal-bred multiple stakes winner Bold Roberta. The mare earned $449,704 and has produced Cal-bred multiple stakes winner Bella Luma. Hip #166 is a Cal-bred son of Into Mischief and a half brother to Cal-bred champion Take the One O One. Stormy Hull, breeder of Calbred champion California Diamond, has a half sister to that runner in the sale. Consigned as hip #35 and named She’s Blue Diamond, the filly is by Bluegrass Cat out of Carrie’s a Jewel, by Slewdledo. Shane Easterbrook brings 16 for several clients in the name of her Easterbrook Livestock Management. They include hip #163, a son of Smart Bid—Nashoba’s Candy, by Candy Ride. The mare is a half sister to Cal-bred Horse of the Year Nashoba’s Key. Barton Thoroughbreds has consigned 19 yearlings to the sale, most of them Cal-breds. The group includes hip #225, a daughter of Acclamation out of a half sister to Cal-bred Horse of the Year Free House.

Focus on the Future

Jessica Pyfer

BY EMILY SHIELDS

Mother Sherri, an exercise rider since the age of 18, had been galloping for Mark Glatt before going to work for the late trainer Mike Mitchell. About the same time, Mitchell hired a new assistant, Philip D’Amato. The newcomers fell in love and were wed shortly thereafter. Pyfer, 7 at the time, considers D’Amato the predominant father figure in her life. “He’s always been there for me, and I’m definitely a daddy’s girl,” she said. “He has done so much for me in regard to schooling, which in our family is very important.” Pyfer is entering her senior year at Azusa Pacific University, where she is studying political science and pre-law. She will be taking the LSAT this fall in hopes of attending law school in 2020 to pursue her second dream, a career in politics. “I’m really blessed to have another passion and the ability to pursue another career,” Pyfer said, though for now she can’t stand to take even one day off from the track. “I don’t want anyone getting on ‘my’ horses. I don’t ever want to stop doing it. Even in law school I would probably gallop on the weekends and in the summer. I would love to be a jockey; riding never gets boring.” Pyfer began exercising horses virtually the moment she turned 16. “At first I was galloping for my dad in the summers, then trying to do school and still compete in jumping at the same time,” she said. “I got a little burnt out; I had been jumping nearly every day of my life.” A serendipitous meeting with another rider resulted in Pyfer’s selling her Grand Prix horse to concentrate on school and the racetrack full time. Pyfer, 21, has been around some special horses, including Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) winner Obviously, D’Amato’s first Breeders’ Cup winner and a horse Pyfer’s mother regularly 32

While many horse-crazy girls can say that riding is among one of their earliest memories, Jessica Pyfer was already jumping cross rails at 4 years old. At age 10, she traveled all the way to Kentucky to win the USEF Pony Finals, becoming the youngest rider to win–a record that stands today. Now, Pyfer can most often be found on the back of a racehorse, thanks to the union of her race-loving parents.

Just Grazed Me won the $150,345 Fleet Treat Stakes at Del Mar last year in just her second start. The gray filly has three wins and three seconds in six starts and is graded stakes-placed. “I have galloped her almost every day since she came to the track,” said Pyfer, who admitted she cried tears of joy when her favorite filly won the stakes. “She’s just really special.” Pyfer might not gallop horses forever, but she wants to continue as long as she can. “I’m so lucky that my dad is a big trainer,” she said. “I’ve had other people ask me how to get started exercising horses, but I honestly say I don’t really know. I never had to struggle; the job was waiting for me. I had the riding experience, and our barn is our family: my little brother, my mom, my dad, and me.”

But I fell in love through Vigors.” Green was at Santa Anita the day popular, near-white Vigors won the grade 1 San Antonio by dropping well back, then circling the field to win. “From then on I saw all of his races, including the Santa Anita Handicap,” Green recalled. John Henry was another big name that Green remembers seeing before he moved north, away from Santa Anita and horse racing in general. “I lost track,” he said of the sport. “At the time you could

y Green has a good sense of humor, a trait that can carry him through lean times in the racing industry. He owns and operates SLO Racing Stable and explains, “I thought it would be funny to have something called ‘slow.’ It would confuse people.” The name is really derived from Green’s job as a lawyer in San Luis Obispo. Since Green got into the breeding game just a decade ago, his horses have been far from slow. And while his breeding and racing stable improves each year, Green has turned his attention to the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association, where

he now serves on the board. But Green didn’t start with horses. He started with pigs. “I grew up in the Santa Ynez Valley, where I had every animal except horses,” he said. “I had a pig operation with 200 pigs when I was 16.” Green made the leap from pigs to law via the University of Southern California, graduating with a degree in English literature before moving to the law school there. “I did law in Los Angeles for 11 years and in college discovered both Santa Anita and Hollywood Park were right there,” he said. “So I spent way too much of my college years at the track.” Green helped his local postmen out by collecting their wagers for the day and

LET THE MIGHTY 3 DIG IN

John Deere 3E Compact Utility Tractors

Build water features. Move mulch. Dig drainage ditches. Plant a row of trees. Dump gravel. Run with us with a 25 HP, 32 HP or 38 HP 3E Compact Utility Tractor with an optional backhoe and a loader and really dig in. BENEFITS OF DMSO THE MAGIC BULLET OF TREATMENTS FROM A TO Z BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

rainers and horse owners rely on various types of medications for treating leg injuries and soreness in equine athletes. One favorite “all purpose” product is DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide). DMSO has dozens of uses, and many horsemen swear by it because it has a high margin of safety and very few side effects. Some veterinarians have used it for nearly every medical condition. By itself, it reduces pain, swelling, and inflammation. DMSO is often used in combination with other medications because it readily penetrates body tissues and can take another medication with it.

About this article The author, a longtime horsewoman, compiled the information in this article from several interviews she has conducted over the years with the following: Dr. John Metcalf of Auburn, Wash., who used DMSO extensively when it first came into experimental use; Dr. Marlin C. Baker, an equine vet who practiced for many years in Weatherford, Texas; Dr. Barney Fleming of Custer, S.D., who vetted hundreds of endurance rides; and Dr. David McCarroll with Interstate Equine Services in Goldsby, Okla., who was on the cutting edge of sports-medicine therapies.

DMSO is a colorless liquid (also available in gel form), with an odor somewhat like rotten onions after it is applied to the body and an aftertaste like oysters or garlic. If you touch it, you can immediately taste it. Sometimes just breathing the air where DMSO has been used can produce this taste in your mouth. When metabolized by the body, DMSO is broken down by oxidation into MSM (methylsulfonyl-methane) or reduced to DMS (dimethyl sulfide) and excreted in urine and feces. DMS is also eliminated through the skin and lungs (and can be smelled on the breath) and is responsible for the characteristic odor. This odor may persist up to 72 hours after a single dose of DMSO in a human or animal patient.

DMSO is hydroscopic, which means it attracts water, and can draw fluid out of body tissues. It freezes at a higher temperature than water, becoming solid at about 50 degrees. If you work with DMSO on a cool day, you must keep it warm. It produces heat (temporarily) when mixed with water and then has a lower freezing point. It came into use in veterinary medicine in the early 1960s. The DMSO used medically and as a commercial solvent is a by-product of the paper-pulp industry. During the paper-manufacturing process, in which certain chemicals are used to break down the wood fibers, the initial waste liquid is DMS. That is then mixed with a combination of methanol and hydrogen or methanol and carbon disulfide, with DMSO as the end product. Today there are two grades of DMSO— medical and industrial. Most veterinarians use medical-grade DMSO, which is 99% pure.

drugs across cell membranes than others. DMSO readily carries steroids, morphine, or penicillin, for instance. What it will carry depends on the molecular weight, shape, and electrochemistry of the drug’s molecules. It will not carry bacteria or viruses because they are too “large.” DMSO is a very effective antioxidant—a free-oxide radical scavenger. It reduces inflammation, gathering up toxic free radicals (groups of atoms that go in and out of chemical combination without changing themselves). These toxic groups of atoms are cell particles that are

“[DMSO] is one of the safest, most benign medications we can use. I’ve never found a drug or medication that has as few side effects as DMSO.”

HOW IT WORKS

DMSO dissolves many things that won’t dissolve in water and has the ability to break them down to where they can be carried through cell walls. One of the reasons DMSO is so effective for medical purposes is that it has the ability to go through body membranes. It rapidly penetrates the skin when applied topically. Early studies showed that the ability to do this varies with the percentage of DMSO in the solution used. It has the most ability to penetrate skin at 7090% solution (and this ability drops when concentrations higher than 90% are used). Lower concentrations, such as 10-20% solution, can readily cross other membranes, as when used intravenously. DMSO can speed the movement of drugs through body tissues or take drugs into tissues they would not otherwise penetrate. It can act as a carrier for medications, enhancing the action of many drugs, such as topical anesthetics, antibiotics, or corticosteroids. Within the body (as when administered intravenously), it can take medications from the bloodstream directly into other tissues, such as the lungs or muscles, to get them where they need to go for maximum benefit. It is more successful in ferrying some

released during the inflammatory process as the body attempts to deal with injuries, bacteria, or other attacking pathogens. Free-oxide radicals kill harmful cells, but also damage and destroy some of the healthy tissues (which in turn release more free radicals), resulting in a vicious cycle that produces swelling and inflammation. By gathering up free radicals, DMSO reduces tissue damage and thus minimizes swelling and inflammation and speeds healing. Studies have shown that DMSO is one of the most powerful free-radical scavengers in biology. DMSO is also a bacteriostatic agent, which means it inhibits growth of bacteria. In a 20% concentration, it is effective against several types of pathogenic bacteria, including E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas. It also has an analgesic effect. In laboratory experiments it has been shown to block conduction in isolated nerves. Conduction returns when the DMSO is washed away from the nerve. Laboratory tests suggest that it alleviates pain by blocking certain peripheral nerve fibers. In clinical trials DMSO was found to www.ctba.com

give almost immediate relief (lasting up to six hours) when applied to burns, cuts, and sprains. COMMON USES OF DMSO

Originally used in human patients by Dr. Stanley Jacob, a surgeon at University of Oregon Medical School, DMSO was soon being used by veterinarians and animal owners to treat a variety of ailments. Today it can be purchased in gel form for topical use, and as a liquid for intravenous use. Extensive studies of the anti-inflammatory effects of DMSO have shown that when it is painted onto horses’ injured legs, the area becomes less painful, swelling is reduced, and the affected leg returns to normal more quickly. The horse’s lower legs are very susceptible to swelling and fluid retention, so DMSO is useful in treating leg injuries, and also bursitis and synovitis (inflammatory conditions in tendons, ligaments, and joints). It makes a great sweat for swollen legs because it reduces edema. When applying DMSO to the skin, however, veterinarians often recommend it be mixed with furacin or nitrofurazone ointment (a topical antibiotic) to buffer it and keep it from burning the skin. Unbuffered, it can produce temporary sensations of prickling and burning. Prolonged use of straight DMSO might cause scaling and peeling of skin. Furacin is not used as much today because it has been suspected to be carcinogenic to humans though it is still used in veterinary medicine. Bill Casner, a Texas horseman who was at one time co-owner of WinStar Farms in Kentucky, says DMSO and furacin have been traditionally mixed together to reduce swelling in a leg. “You put the DMSO and furacin on a sheet bandage, put it on the leg, wrap it with plastic wrap, and add another layer of bandage,” said Casner. “DMSO is the absolute best medication for reducing inflammation. It blocks the inflammatory cytokines that come with inflammation. Some inflammation is beneficial to the healing process, but too much inflammation (and swelling) restricts blood flow and impedes healing.” Steroids like dexamethasone are also good anti-inflammatories, but they hin-

Dr. John Metcalf, a veterinarian who practiced for many years in Auburn, Wash., was probably the first to give DMSO intravenously, not long after it was first used experimentally in the early 1960s. Metcalf had been treating a foal that would not nurse and was losing ground. Metcalf felt the problem was lack of blood circulation to the brain. He had some DMSO that Dr. Stanley Jacob had given him for experimental purposes and decided to try it on the foal. He told the foal’s owner that this treatment might kill it, but the foal was going to die anyway. Metcalf mixed 10 cc of a 90% solution of DMSO with 100 cc. of Ringers solution and dripped it into the jugular vein. By the next day the foal was perfectly normal. DMSO is very beneficial in acute central nervous system problems, especially with head injuries, such as when a horse flips over backward or runs into a fence or appears to be uncoordinated and disoriented. It can be used in conjunction with other drugs in horses with high fevers, such as encephalitis, equine encephalomyelitis, West Nile, etc. You have to control the fever itself with other drugs, but the DMSO helps reduce the inflammation. DMSO is often used to treat edema in the brain/spinal cord in conditions like encephalitis or equine protozoal myelitis (EPM). It is also used as an adjunctive therapy in intestinal surgeries and for analgesia post-operatively—such as with colic surgery. Many surgeons use DMSO in post-operative colic cases for treatment of endotoxemia and to improve circulation around the bowel. This promotes better healing and also gives pain relief. Veterinarians use it for pain in severe colic or to reduce swelling of the udder in mares after weaning. To treat muscles tying up, a 10% solution of DMSO can be given intravenously. It is also used for acute laminitis and for cantharadin poisoning (blister beetle toxicity), to lessen the effect of that toxin on the kidneys and GI tract. Many veterinarians use DMSO almost daily in their practices. For competition horses with sore muscles, it makes a draBILL CASNER PHOTOS

matic improvement in their comfort level. In these situations 60 ml of a 90% solution of DMSO, diluted to 300 ml, can be given intravenously. DMSO can be helpful in treating heaves or other respiratory problems in horses by scavenging the toxic products of these conditions and reducing the inflammation that tends to swell the airway linings and block the passages. It is beneficial in treating pneumonia because it helps dry out lung tissue. Fluid buildup in the lungs is reduced, restoring lung capacity and enabling the horse to breathe easier. Along with DMSO, some veterinarians use Banamine or a corticosteroid (to reduce swelling and inflammation). Sometimes it’s hard to tell which one is doing the most good, but they seem to work well together. If a horse is acutely tied up with muscle cramps, DMSO intravenously not only helps reduce the inflammation and edema, but also stimulates urination. This helps flush out and excrete breakdown products from the muscles because blood circulation to the muscles has also been increased. Used in the earliest stages of laminitis, DMSO can often help reverse the toxic processes that damage hooves. The toxic effects in the feet can be relieved by administering a 10% solution of DMSO, added to IV fluids. It is also used in some cases of chronic founder to help combat the drying out and inflammation of the foot as the horse is recovering. The heat and fever caused by laminitis can make the hoof horn curl and tighten (toes curving upward), and DMSO can help prevent this. DMSO can be beneficial for newborn foals deprived of oxygen during a difficult birth. If given soon after birth, the endangered foal might not suffer brain damage. Dummy foals treated with intravenous injections of DMSO (usually mixed with

saline solution) often make a spectacular recovery and return to normal. Veterinarians also use DMSO in other situations in which a foal might be hypoxic (short on oxygen), such as red-bag foals (the placenta detaching and coming through the birth canal ahead of the foal) or any foal that has been short on oxygen at birth. Some of these respond well to treatment with DMSO, but if the brain has been deprived of oxygen too long, over the next several days you might see nervous system signs even though the response was good at first. WOUND TREATMENT

DMSO can be put directly into an open wound, in many cases, with good results. Not only does it reduce swelling and inflammation, but it is also bacteriostatic, inhibiting growth or multiplication of bacteria. It is also a mild painkiller as it can block nerve stimulation. DMSO will dissolve collagen (the main supportive protein of skin) and thus reduce the size of the final scar in a healing wound. Care must be taken, however, to apply the DMSO in low concentrations, or it might cause pain/burning or a tingling sensation when applied to raw tissue. DMSO produces heat when applied with other solutions and can cause thermal injury if a person is not careful with it. Mix it with water or saline first, then wait a moment to apply it after the initial heat-producing reaction subsides. Wound repair can be enhanced with DMSO. If a cut results in a large area of skin hanging loose, the veterinarian must decide whether to suture the skin flap back into place or cut it off. If the flap is too large, it cannot be successfully sutured. A general rule of thumb is that the length of the skin flap should not exwww.ctba.com

ceed the width by more than 11⁄2 times. In other words, if the hanging flap is three inches wide, it can be 41⁄2 inches long without endangering the circulation at the ends of the flap. But if the flap is painted with DMSO, the length can be almost twice that long with the same rate of success. Casner mixes DMSO and water to use as a spray, mixing about 80% DMSO and 20% water, for wounds. “The DMSO acts as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and a carrier, to take some other medication into the tissues in certain situations where you need more medication,” he said. “If I have a horse with any type of wound, DMSO is the first thing I use. A few years ago I had a young horse that peeled a big flap of skin away from his forehead. The vet didn’t think it would heal after stitching it back on, but I suggested tubing the horse with DMSO for three days in a row. “Tubing involves mixing a pint of DMSO with a few gallons of water, inserting a tube into the stomach, and pumping it in. This was a Colonel John colt (from that stallion’s first crop), and I was six weeks away from putting him in the Saratoga sale. He wasn’t going to sell with a swollen head and scars, so we used the DMSO. “It was absolutely amazing. We took the stitches out in 10 days, and it looked beautiful. It never swelled or oozed. It healed perfectly, and in six weeks we took him to the sale and you couldn’t even tell where that area had been injured and repaired. Plastic surgeons use DMSO on their stitches, etc. after they do plastic surgery on their patients because there is no scarring. It’s an amazing drug.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through August 25, 2019.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
