CALIFORNIA CUP TURNS 30

he California Toroughbred Breeders Association is pleased to announce that the 30th running of the California Cup will be held at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, Jan. 18. In an efort to revitalize the event, we have gone back to our original format of ofering all Cal Cup races on the same day. We will again showcase the top California-bred and California-sired horses, with full felds, large restricted purses, and very competitive racing. Many great California and national champions have competed in Cal Cup in its three-decade history. Resembling past years, the stakes and

overnight restricted races on the card have been adjusted in order to ofer more lucrative opportunities for diferent classes of horses. Tis should encourage increased participation of the horsemen. Total purses will once again exceed $1 million with a 10-race card. Te stakes races for the day include the $200,000 Unusual Heat California Cup Turf Classic Presented by City National Bank, the $150,000 California Cup Sprint, the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint, the $200,000 California Cup Oaks, and the $200,000 California Cup Derby. Te overnight restricted races under

consideration are maiden allowance, non-winners of one allowance, and maiden claiming races, all with enhanced purses and strictly for Cal-bred/Cal-sired horses. Troughout the Santa Anita meet, numerous other California-bred and California-sired stakes races will be ofered as part of the lucrative Golden State Series. Princess Vivian and Blue Diva won stakes at Golden Gate Fields in mid-December. Princess Vivian scored against California-breds in the $75,000 Bear Fan Stakes Dec. 14, and Blue Diva defeated open company in the $50,000 Miss Princess Vivian rules the Bear Fan America Stakes Dec. 15. Both races were for fllies and mares, 3 years old and older. Princess Vivian, the second-longest shot of the seven-horse feld at 21-1, raced seventh and last early under jockBlue Diva imperious in Miss America ey Catalino Martinez. She swung three wide at the quarter pole and beat 6-5 favorite Apache Princess by a half-length in 1:09.55 for six furlongs. Apache Princess had another half-length on third-place Ima Happy Cat. MNM Toroughbreds bred Princess Vivian and owns her with Mary MacDonald, Tom Marsh, and Henry Mendoza. Sergio Ledezma trains the 2016 daughter of Uh Oh Bango—Seductive Charm, by Macho Uno. Te victory was Princess Vivian’s third in six starts and raised her earnings to $107,634. Juan Hernandez piloted Blue Diva in the 11⁄16-mile Miss America as the 6-1 fourth choice. Blue Diva came from sixth to take the lead in the stretch and score by three-quarters of a length in 1:43.67. Irish-bred Renny’s Lady fnished second, with Kentucky-bred Heathers Grey third. Cal-bred Wins at Zia Park

Midnight Emma on time in Zia Park Princess Stakes

California-bred Midnight Emma won the $75,000 Zia Park Princess Stakes Nov. 27 at Zia Park in New Mexico, her second straight stakes victory. Settling ffth early in the six-furlong event, Midnight Emma raced wide on the turn, took command at the eighth pole, and won by 11⁄2 lengths under jockey Francisco Arrieta. Midnight Emma clocked the distance in 1:10.47.

Cal-bred Smart N Wicked was second, with Kentucky-bred Wasabi Girl third. Midnight Emma came in of a win in the ATBA Fall Sales Futurity. Jason Allen Tackitt bred the 2017 daughter of Midnight Lute—Little Emma, by Eskendereya. Owner Jose Luna Silva purchased Midnight Emma for $10,000 at the 2018 Arizona Toroughbred Breeders’ Association fall mixed sale. He also trains the flly.

In the continuing efort to increase racehorse safety, the frst-ever standing positron emission tomography (PET) scan machine has been installed at Santa Anita. Ofcials with Santa Anita and the Southern California Equine FounThe standing PET dation, along with Dr. scanner will help Mathieu Spriet of the diagnose leg injuries University of California, Davis, unveiled the machine in mid-December. Spriet, an associate professor at Davis, developed the Longmile Positron Emission Tomography (MILE-PET) Scan machine at the university in partnership with the Brain Biosciences and Longmile Veterinary Imaging Division. Principal funding came from Te Stronach Group and the Dolly Green Research Foundation, and the machine is being housed in the nuclear medicine facility, run by the Southern California Equine Foundation on the Santa Anita backstretch. “Te take-home word is ‘resolution’—it’s a much higher resolution than we get with our original nuclear scintigraphy imaging here,” said Dr. Joe Dowd, president of the SCEF. Spriet explained that with the previous large PET scan equipment, a horse had to be shipped to a facility that had it and had to undergo general anesthesia. Now a horse can undergo the procedure at Santa Anita and while standing normally. “In addition to having an increased resolution, we really can look in any direction of space at any level,” said Spriet. Te machine is expected to be especially helpful for diagnosing lower-leg injuries.

CHRB Approves Riding Crop Restrictions At its Dec. 12 meeting, the California Horse Racing Board approved a new rule restricting riding crops. Per California law, the rule is available for 45 days of public comment before being returned to the board for a public hearing. Dr. Greg Ferraro, who at the November CHRB meeting was elected chairman, described the rule as the most restrictive rule regarding the riding crop in North America. It limits the use of the crop to six times during a race and no more than two times in succession without giving the horse a chance to respond before using the riding crop again. Te crop must be used in an underhand position with the crop always at or below shoulder level. Showing or waving the crop without touching the horse and tapping the horse on the shoulder with the crop in the down position while having both hands on the reins are permissible. Possible penalties for misuse of the crop include a $1,000 maximum fne and minimum suspension of three days, absent mitigating circumstances, such as use of the crop for safety purposes, as determined by the stewards. Te rule also prohibits use of the crop during training.

With Heriberto Figueroa in the irons, You’reright Again took the lead early and led throughout to score by a length over Shootin Money, with Call Me Daddy third. You’reright Again stopped the timer in 1:10.76. Lloyd Wicker trains You’reright Again for owner/breeder Gregorio Aguilar. You’reright Again is out of the winning Tribal Rule mare You’vegotthatright. Cogito, a stakes-winning son of Giant’s Causeway—Ladies Cruise, by Fappiano, stands at Ocean Breeze Ranch in Bonsall.

■ California Chrome’s Japanese Stud Fee California Chrome will stand the 2020 season at Arrow Stud on Hokkaido Island in Japan for 4 million yen (about $36,500 in U.S. funds). He joins Shanghai Bobby, the 2012 Eclipse Award champion 2-yearold male, who began standing at Arrow Stud in 2019. Twice the national Horse of the Year and California-bred Horse of the Year, California Chrome began standing at stud in Kentucky, and his frst foals are 2-year-olds of 2020. The richest Cal-bred in history, California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit—Love the Chase, by Not For Love) earned $14,752,650. His victories include two-thirds of the Triple Crown, the Dubai World Cup (G1), and the $1 Million TVG Pacifc Classic Stakes (G1).

Nakatani Retires from Riding COADY PHOTOGRAPHY

Corey Nakatani, who rode the winners of 3,909 races for purse earnings of more than $234 million, ofcially retired as a jockey in late November. He had been injured in a race at Del Mar Aug. 4, 2018, and while he tried to return to competition, he eventually decided to retire. Te 49-year-old Nakatani has Corey Nakatani ridden regularly in Southern California since 1989. He won 10 Breeders’ Cup races among his 341 graded stakes victories, including the 2006 TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) on California-bred Tor’s Echo. Nakatani regularly piloted California-bred Lava Man as well as such stakes winners as My Miss Aurelia, Serena’s Song, Lite Light, and Shared Belief. Nakatani is the 12th-leading rider of all time based on purse earnings. Del Mar honored him Nov. 30 in a winner’s circle celebration. 10

Pretty Unusual

10 YEARS AGO California-bred PRETTY UNUSUAL won the $150,000 El Encino Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Jan. 17, 2010, for owners Madeline Auerbach, Marie Goda, and actor Jack Klugman. With jockey Chantal Sutherland aboard, Pretty Unusual came from seventh early in the 11⁄16mile race to score by 11⁄4 lengths. She defeated favored Stardom Bound, the 2008 Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old flly, completing the distance in 1:43.72. Barry Abrams trained Pretty Unusual, a daughter of Unusual Heat—Sci Fi Kin, by Siphon, bred by Auerbach and David Abrams. The second dam is Klugman-bred Akinemod, who won the 1990 El Encino. Pretty Unusual ultimately won three of 14 races, with three seconds and one third, for earnings of $304,152.

25 YEARS AGO California-breds KEY PHRASE, SOFTSHOE SURE SHOT, and KLASSY KIM performed well in January 1995 at Santa Anita. Martin and Pam Wygod’s homebred 4-year-old flly Key Phrase (Flying Paster— Sown, by Grenfall) took the $160,600 Santa Monica Handicap (G1) over seven furlongs Jan. 16 for jockey Chris Antley and trainer Ron Ellis. Nineyear-old Softshoe Sure Shot (Bolger—Snapshot, by Gummo) scored in the $159,100 San Car-

los Handicap (G2), also at seven furlongs, Jan. 14. Alex Solis rode the gelding for owners Buddy, Judy, and Betty Johnston and Jan, Mace, and Samantha Siegel and trainer Bruce Headley. The Johnston family’s Old English Rancho bred Softshoe Sure Shot. Klassy Kim (Silent Screen— Kool Arrival, by Relaunch) won the $106,400 El Encino Stakes (G2) at 11⁄16 miles Jan. 15 with Kent Desormeaux aboard. Mel Stute trained Klassy Kim for owner Bill Thomas. Pete Valenti and John Coelho bred the 4-year-old flly.

50 YEARS AGO

For only a $16,000 purchase, California-bred GEORGE LEWIS proved an exceptional value. He defeated several horses on the Triple Crown trail in the Hibiscus Stakes at Florida’s Hialeah Park Jan. 21, 1970. Favored at 9-5, George Lewis, ridden by Bill Hartack, sat behind pacesetting Iron Warrior early in the six-furlong race, took the lead at the top of the stretch, and defeated Insubordination by a length. His time of 1:091⁄5 was only twoffths off the track record. Buster Millerick trained George Lewis for owner Alan Magerman. Dr. W. D. Lucas bred the son of Envoy—Bell’s Lark, by Unbelievable. George Lewis, who had won the previous year’s Del Mar Futurity, eventually earned a total of $270,685.

California-bred Hall of Famer Lava Man was one of the many sponsors of the Dec. 7-8 CARMA’s Toroughbred Classic Horse Show at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. Te two-day sporting event attracted 90 retired racehorses and celebrated the love of the Toroughbred and the connection of the equestrian community and the racing industry. Today Daehling Ranch stands eight stallions and is a major farm in the northern part of the state. Its slogan of “afordable to the small breeder” emphasizes Daehling’s desire to give everyone in the industry a chance to do well. Daehling died Nov. 28 at age 82. He leaves behind June, his wife of 56 years; their daughters, Julia Oldfeld and Joanna Nelson; their sons-in-law, Justin Oldfeld and Bruce Nelson; and four grandchildren. Te late Clement Hirsch’s silks are being added to the collection at the California Toroughbred Breeders Association headquarters in Arcadia. Troughout the hallways of the CTBA ofces, the California Toroughbred Foundation displays the silks of people who have made notable breeding and racing contributions to the industry. A founder of the Oak Tree Racing Association, Hirsch was a prominent owner and breeder for more than 50 years prior to his death in 2000. He also was instrumental in the establishment of the Del Mar Toroughbred Club and sat on that board as well as the CTBA board. Hirsh’s son, Bo, has continued to Gary Stevens sporting the race horses and donated the silks to honor his father. Hirsch silks on grade 1 Te late Warren Stute was Hirsch’s longtime winner Magical Maiden trainer, taking over for R. H. McDaniel, who moved to Las Vegas, in 1952. Hirsch won the 1969 Hollywood Gold Cup with Figonero and the 1970 Charles H. Strub Stakes with Snow Sporting, both Argentine imports. He also owned California-bred June Darling, winner of the 1970 Del Mar Futurity, Oak Leaf Stakes, and Norfolk Stakes. Other Hirsch stakes winners included Magical Mile and Magical Maiden.

Since 1958 the Foundation has operated as a non-proft 501(c)3 corporation that can accept tax-deductible contributions. For more than fve decades the CTF has sponsored numerous research and educational projects and awarded scholarships to veterinary students at U.C. Davis and Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona. Te Foundation maintains the Carleton F. Burke Memorial Library, one of the most extensive collections of equine literature found anywhere. Te Oak Tree Racing Association quickly signed on, led by its board and then-general manager Ray Rogers. Sherwood “Chilly” Chillingworth had come onto the Oak Tree board in 1989 and became its executive vice president in 1993. His eforts to promote California Cup in subsequent years have immeasurably helped the state’s breeding industry and make him a worthy addition to the Hall of Fame. When California Cup celebrated its 25th running in 2015, Chillingworth recalled those early years. “Oak Tree was bred to be helpful to the industry, and we thought this was a fne idea,” he said. “But we had to write new legislation and alter our stakes schedule. It wasn’t an easy thing to do. Oak Tree put up a lot of the money to make it happen, but the idea was to interest people in breeding and buying Cal-breds. I think the Cal-breds have gotten better over the years because of this.” California Cup was only one area in which Chillingworth and Oak Tree benefted the racing and breeding industries, both at the state level and nationally. As just one example, the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting hosted the Breeders’ Cup fve times. “Chilly was right in the middle of each of those events,” said John Barr. Barr, who sits on the CTBA board and was inducted into the Hall of Fame last 20

any individuals were involved with the creation of California Cup in 1990, leading to increased opportunities for California-bred runners. At the California Toroughbred Breeders Association, Lou Rowan and Don Valpredo spearheaded eforts to create such a program.

He served with Chillingworth on the Oak Tree board. “We became good friends over the years,” Barr said. “It was through Chilly’s eforts at Oak Tree that the Cal Cup collaboration took place, and the two organizations presented the Cal Cup event at Santa Anita for many, many years.” Oak Tree also donated millions of dollars to a variety of racing-related causes, from veterinary research and horsemen’s welfare groups to seed money to start such organizations as the National Toroughbred Racing Association and the Racing Medication and Testing Corsortium. “All profts (from Oak Tree) were for the ongoing beneft of horse-racing charitable events and aid,” said Barr. Chillingworth also enthusiastically participated in the racing industry. He co-owned such stakes winners as Swing Till Dawn, Yashgan, Forzando, and

Valley Victory. British import Yashgan earned $516,920 and, perhaps foreshadowing Chillingworth’s involvement with Oak Tree, he won the 1985 Oak Tree Invitational (G1T). Chillingworth brought his considerable legal background to both his professional career with the Richfeld Oil Company and in real estate development and to his service to the industry. In addition to his work with Oak Tree, Chillingworth served as a steward of Te Jockey Club, secretary of the board of the Toroughbred Racing Associations, director of the Toroughbred Racing and Protective Bureau, and member of the Equibase Management Committee. But it is as the face of Oak Tree that Chillingworth is best known in Toroughbred circles. He oversaw Oak Tree until his death this past October. “He will be missed, but he has left a special legacy,” said Barr.

Fashionably Fast is a good example. Foaled in 2015, that son of Lucky Pulpit came into his own in 2019, when he captured back-to-back stakes: the Harris Farms Stakes at Fresno and the Cary Grant Stakes at Del Mar. John Harris’ Harris Farms, for which the Fresno stakes is named, bred Fashionably Fast and co-owns him. Lucky Pulpit stood his entire career at Harris Farms in Coalinga, and he comes from the breeding program of Larry and Marianne Williams. Te California breeding industry owes the Williamses a debt of gratitude because they produced the Kentucky-bred horse, raced him through most of his career in California, and stood him in the state. A son of Pulpit—Lucky Soph, by Cozzene, Lucky Pulpit began racing at 2 in 2003. He broke his maiden in his second start and placed in two stakes that season. He became a stakes winner in 2005 when he won the Smile Stakes at Arlington Park, and he was often a factor in stakes competition, placing in six stakes, including the 2004 Santa Catalina Stakes (G2) on dirt and the Generous Stakes (G3T) on turf. In 22 starts, he won three races, with fve seconds and fve thirds for earnings of $209,928. Lucky Pulpit surpassed himself at stud. A perennial leading California sire, he has been honored at several CTBA awards banquets. Most recently, he received awards as the 2018 leading California sire of California-conceived 2-year-olds by earnings, 2016 leading California sire of

Rousing Sermon earned $821,572 and won the 2011 Bob Benoit California Cup Juvenile Stakes and the 2013 On Trust Handicap. Almost Millionaires LOOKS A MILLION BUT RUNS LIKE $900,000 AND CHANGE

alifornia-bred millionaires hold a special place in the hearts of local breeders and fans who are bolstered by the idea that any Golden State runner can reach such heights. Although they are not quite millionaires, the 15 Cal-breds who have earned more than $900,000 without breaking the next plateau were also brave, honest campaigners. Tis is the second of a two-part series highlighting those horses, featuring eight Cal-bred colts and geldings. Te richest non-millionaire Cal-bred male is Areyoutalkintome, a 2001 son of Smokester and the Storm Bird mare Andrea Gail. Te dark bay gelding won 10 of 52 starts, with 15 seconds and nine thirds, for earnings of $985,417. John Tofan and Trudy McCafery bred Areyoutalkintome, a $10,000 yearling purchase at the 2002 Barretts October sale of preferred yearlings. He began his career in the maiden claiming ranks, breaking his maiden in

his third try at the $32,000 level and being claimed out of that efort by Dennis O’Neill and Russell Sarno. Trainer Doug O’Neill took over and got Areyoutalkintome to win the 2004 Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar, the frst of the gelding’s four stakes victories. Two came at the seaside oval; the other two, at Santa Anita. Later that fall Areyoutalkintome won the $150,000 California Cup Sprint Handicap, then added his frst graded win, the $110,500 El Conejo Handicap (G3) Jan. 2. He was grade 2-placed in 2006 and even ran second in the Phoenix Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G3) at Keeneland after winning the Pirate’s Bounty Handicap at Del Mar. “He was a big, handsome, natural athlete,” said O’Neill. “He’d save his speed for the afternoon and not overtrain in the mornings. He was a blue-collar horse that could run with anyone and never be intimidated. He was a barn favorite. He was really easy to train. I wish I had a barn full of horses like him.” Kjell Qvale’s homebred Variety Road made $964,540 in his day, racing from 1985 through 1991. Te 1983 son of Kennedy Road—Variety Queen, by Macarthur Park, had a star-crossed career,

winning the grade 1 San Felipe Handicap and defeating ultimate Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Ferdinand in the San Rafael Stakes (G2) in 1986, but then missing the Derby itself when he developed boils on his neck and ran a 106-degree fever, nearly dying. Bruce Headley trained Variety Road initially. Headley saddled him to win a thrilling renewal of the San Fernando Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita over superstars Broad Brush, Preakness (G1) winner and fellow Cal-bred Snow Chief, and ultimate Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Ferdinand. Variety Road retired to stud early, but then returned to the races in the care of Jerry Hollendorfer, who conditioned him to run a track-record mile in 1:342⁄5 at the Sacramento fair. “He was a horse that had a serious accident and went to stud, and still came back and won stakes after that,” Hollendorfer said. “He was real easy to train.” Variety Road won 17 of 59 starts and 12 stakes races. At stud he sired stakes winners Jan Alta and Better Choice, and he had an additional 37 stakes winners as a broodmare sire. Te fashy chestnut Bordonaro was

recognizable by his copper coat and brilliant blaze. Te 2001 son of Memo—Miss Excitement, by Rajab, won half of his 20 starts and earned $938,128. He was a homebred for Fred Carrillo and Daniel Cassella, running throughout his career under the tutelage Bill Spawr. After breaking his maiden, Bordonaro won four races in a row, including a pair of Del Mar allowance events in 2005. He took the California Cup Starter Sprint that fall before jumping up as a graded stakes winner in the $98,000 Vernon O. Underwood Stakes (G3) at Hollywood Park. Tat was part of another fourrace win streak that included the $300,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint at Gulfstream Park over future Breeders’ Cup winner Tor’s Echo and the $150,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn Park. Bordonaro achieved a grade 1 victory in the Ancient Title Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G1) during the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meet in 2006, ran fourth in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Churchill Downs, and in 2007 successfully defended his Count Fleet title at Oaklawn. Spawr still visits Bordonaro BORDONARO regularly at the United Pegasus Foundation Ranch near Hemet, which is also home to Cal-bred $574,876-earner and grade 1 winner Debonair Joe. “Tey take good care of the horses there,” Spawr said. “I see Bordonaro quite often and stop by and feed him carrots. Now when he sees me coming, he gets ready.” Spawr noted that Bordonaro “was nice to train, very controllable, and a big, good-looking horse. He did what you wanted PRINCE SPELLBOUND and ran well everywhere.” Prince Spellbound, the 1982 California Horse of the Year, was a 1979 son of Dimaggio—Artic Spell, by Arctic Prince, who raced for breeder Bill Pease. He earned $935,343 and won the Eddie Read Handicap (G2T), Alibhai Handicap (G3), Hollywood Turf Cup, San Rafael Stakes, and California Breeders’ Champion Stakes. He was also second in the grade 1 Santa Anita Derby but missed the Triple Crown due to not being nominated. Prince Spellbound, who was trained by Lester Holt, entered stud in 1985. He wasn’t very popular and made a brief attempt at a comeback on the track, which made news headlines but was aborted later that year. He sired just 54 starters with 27 winners, including Correra, who took 25 of 80 starts. What a View, earner of $928,357, is still active, having just raced Nov. 30 at Golden Gate Fields. Te 2011 son of

Vronsky—Oceans N Mountains, by Manila, was bred by Old English Rancho and Sal and Patsy Berumen. He now races for the Ellwood Johnston Trust, Taste of Victory Stables, and Finish Line Racing. He did not break his maiden until his fourth start, at Del Mar in 2015. He quickly added a pair of allowance races and took the $251,000 California Cup Turf Classic in 2016 before defeating the likes of Bolo, Bal a Bali, Midnight Storm, and Om in the $400,345 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1T), his winning margin nearly four lengths. What a View added the grade 3 Tunder Road Stakes a month later but didn’t win again until May 2017, when he took the Crystal Water Stakes over Cal-breds. Te late Don Warren originally trained What a View, who has also received guidance from Kenny Black, Phil D’Amato, and Sherrie Monroe. What a View was of from June 2017 until February 2018, but returned to the races to win the American Stakes (G3) in 2018. He has not won since, but the bay gelding is marching ever closer to the $1 million $938,128 mark. Golden Act was both a top runner and sire, earning $928,268 while racing from 1978 through 1980. Te 1976 Cal-bred son of Gummo—Golden Shore, by Windy Sands, ran for breeders Bill Oldknow and Robert Phipps. He was part of a crop that included another standout son of Gummo, Cal-bred millionaire Flying Paster; both runners were prevalent on the Triple $935,343 Crown trail. Golden Act lost to Flying Paster at 2 in the grade 2 Norfolk Stakes but went on to win the Louisiana Derby (G2) and Arkansas Derby (G2) at 3 before running third in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Preakness Stakes behind the mighty Spectacular Bid. He was able to outrun that popular rival in the Belmont Stakes (G1), fnishing second behind upset winner Coastal with “Te Bid” third. Golden Act ran 13 times that year, winning six, including the Canadian International Championship (G1T) at Woodbine, the Lawrence Realization Stakes (G2T) at Belmont, and the Secretariat Stakes (G2T) at Arlington. He was named California’s Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male. Although Golden Act did not repeat his form at 4, going zero for nine, he was grade 1-placed three times. sired 320 winners from 443 foals to race and the earners of more than $18 million in purses. His best runners include Puerto Rican champion Golden End, Panamanian champion Twice Nightly, grade 1 winner Silver Circus, and grade 2 winners Guiza and Entitled To. Golden Act died in California in 2000. Barry and Susan Isaacs’ Blaze O’Brien earned $909,350. Hector Palma was one of four trainers to handle the 1987 gelding by Interco—Irish O’Brien, by D’Artagnan. Multiple stakes winner Irish O’Brien was so profcient on the Southern California racing circuit that she has an annual race named in her honor at Santa Anita. Blaze O’Brien made her proud by becoming a graded stakes winner himself. He ran from December 1989 through June 1995, winning at Hollywood Park, Turf Paradise, Del Mar, and Santa Anita in his career. He pulled a 9-1 upset as an 8-year-old in the Inglewood Handicap (G3T), his frst and only graded score. Susan Isaacs noted that the gelding’s two California Cup Mile wins were highlights in his career. “Blaze was extremely special,” Susan Isaacs said. “He was just about the dearest thing to my heart that there can be. Our lives changed with him. He took us to places we were never able to go

as small little owners and breeders. I’m eternally grateful to all the fans of both Blaze and Irish.” Chase McCoy’s T. V. Lark is the oldest of the group, having earned his $902,194 from 1959-62. He was named the American champion turf horse in 1961, but could switch efortlessly between surfaces and distances. Te son of Indian Hemp defeated Kelso in the 1961 Washington, D.C., International, just one of his 14 stakes wins. T.V. Lark, who was bred by Dr. Walter D. Lucas and cost $10,000 as a yearling in 1958, was the leading sire in North America in 1974. He went on to produce graded stakes stars Quack, Golden Don, T V Vixen, and T. V. Commercial, the latter the broodmare sire of Eclipse champion and Breeders’ Cup winner Countess Diana. T. V. Lark stood at Preston Madden’s Hamburg Place in Lexington, Ky., until his death in 1975. Tere are 65 California-bred millionaires and 19 that have earned between $800,000 and $900,000. Te closest to breaking into the $900,000 threshold is active runner Solid Wager, with $871,170 to date for owner David Staudacher. Te 2011 son of Birdonthewire was most recently fourth in the 2019 Longacres Mile Handicap (G3) at Emerald Downs.

lubhouse Ride had a very good 2019 as a California sire. His frst stakes winner, Warren’s Showtime, won the Oct. 6 Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita, and his second came along toward the end of the year at Los Alamitos when Club Aspen took the $100,000 King Glorious Stakes Dec. 15. Club Aspen has very familiar credentials. His trainer, Craig Lewis, also trained Clubhouse Ride, who amassed $1,341,132 and scored back-to-back wins in the Californian Stakes (G2) during his racing career. It’s a key reason why Craig and his brother Larry purchased Club Aspen at the inaugural Fasig-Tipton 2-year-old sale at Santa Anita last June.

John Harris’ Harris Farms bred Club Aspen in California from the stakes-winning Talkin Man mare Aspen Gal. Kim McCarthy’s McCarthy Bloodstock consigned Club Aspen to the Fasig-Tipton sale, where Larry Lewis signed the ticked on the colt for $55,000. Larry Lewis, an attorney, is also known as the namesake of Larry the Legend, whom Craig Lewis trained to win

the 1995 Santa Anita Derby (G1). Club Aspen debuted at Del Mar about a month after the sale and won in his second start there. He failed to hit the board in three stakes—the Aug. 30 I’m Smokin Stakes, Oct. 6 Zuma Beach Stakes, and Nov. 1 Golden State Juvenile Stakes—but encountered some trouble. “In his turf race (the Zuma Beach), he never had a chance to run; he was in trouble from start to fnish,” said Craig Lewis. “In the (Golden State Juvenile), he was compromised by drawing the inside post in a huge feld. I think both of those races were better than they appear on paper.’’ Golden State Juvenile winner Tap Back went of as the 3-5 favorite in the one-mile King Glorious. He few to the front early, and jockey Jorge Velez put Club Aspen in second. “I wanted to follow him around the track and see if I could beat him,” Velez said of the favorite. “Tere’s a long stretch here, but I like it. Lovingier ofers large consignments at most California sales in the name of his Lovacres Ranch. He also serves as vice chair of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association board. So when the CTBA stepped in to conduct the January sale in 2019 upon the demise of Barretts, Lovingier entered a large consignment, as he has done again for the 2020 sale. As no one had purchased Cholula Lips, Lovingier brought in Amanda Navarro as co-owner of the 2017 California-bred daughter of Empire Way—Sweet Lips Pooh, by Rio Verde. Half of those come from the consignment of Checkmate Toroughbreds, whose principal, Adrian Gonzalez, put together the deal that kept Danzing Candy in California. him to target a younger audience. Hilton doesn’t have a huge advertising budget; he estimates it’s about $300,000 per year, which in a major media market such as San Francisco isn’t going to go far. So the Internet is especially useful for publicizing events like Dollar Days, a weekly Sunday program for a younger audience, including families, that features live music or deejays and other amusements in addition to the bargain food and drink prices. “From those social media platforms, I can really see the push and interest in horse racing and interest in coming out here for the events we put on,” said Hilton, who frst attended the races as a youngster with his grandfather. “Tat’s what I’m really proud of.” A hefty fellow who sports a full beard, a ready laugh, and loads of enthusiasm, Hilton is the man in charge of planning Dollar Days and other events. A big part of that job: attracting more and younger fans. “A Saturday with better racing brings about 2,000 to 2,500 (compared) to a Sunday with about 6,000 to 7,000, so it jumps,” Hilton said of the Dollar Day attendance when the weather is nice. “Te crowd Sunday isn’t coming for the racing. Still, they do have fun, and they stay until the last race. It’s a cool experience.” It’s also an experience that often brings them back. “Te younger crowd, we have to put together options and events that appeal to that,” Hilton said. “Living in the city for so long, being around that culture of people around my own age, that’s what we’re trying to implement here.” Tat’s why there’s an emphasis on keeping new customers entertained during the long periods between races with music and contests such as the “Dollar Day Dash,” a 50-yard footrace with patrons competing in horse costumes. Silly, yes, but the crowd loves things like that, Hilton feels. Wiener dog races are another sure-fre hit with the fans. “Quirky things like that work, and they work in every industry I’ve been in,” he said. Hilton arrived at Golden Gate with a background in sports broadcasting and marketing. He had his own radio program at San Francisco State called “Te Hang40

Hilton also worked for the Oakland Athletics and Diamond Vision before shifting to television marketing with the PAC-12 Network and MLB.com. It was his difculty in piecing together full-time work that led him to Golden Gate when he learned the marketing management position was available. Sam Spear, the celebrated director of media relations at Golden Gate for the past four decades and the man credited with coining the popular slogan, “Where the Bay Comes to Play,” happens to be a good friend of Hilton’s father, Bill. Spear knew of Ryan’s interest in sports marketing and encouraged him to apply. “I’m really appreciative of Sam helping me get into this industry,” Ryan said. Hilton moved out of San Francisco after being hired and now lives in Berkeley, about an 81⁄2-minute drive from the track, with his wife, Mollie; their 9-month old son, Harrison David; and their two Labrador retrievers. “I was able to have a kid and start a family—that’s basically what this industry did for me—and I’m so happy where my life is going right now,” he said. “I feel I have a good shot to keep going forward with a great organization.” While his dreams of success in radio and television didn’t materialize as he had hoped coming out of college, Hilton made a lot of connections with his various stops, which he says has helped him at Golden Gate. He brings wide knowledge of the track’s market as well as his personal experience as someone who has lived in the Bay Area nearly his entire life. Hilton’s approach to marketing the 78-year-old racetrack is two-fold: Young fans just want to have fun, and don’t be afraid to try things. Some of his efort is directed toward events that don’t seem to involve horse racing at all. Hosting hip-hop concerts or the FoodieLand Night Market, a giant Asian-inspired street food festival, draws big crowds to the racetrack grounds and is part of his future plans for race-day promotions. “Corporate keeps telling me to try things no matter what happens,” Hilton said, re-

odd Sheehan grew up visiting Del Mar racetrack, frst as a child with his parents and then as a high school student with friends. What stood out to him was a love not of gambling, but of the horses themselves. “It was the racing, the people, the pageantry of it,” he said. “I fell in love with the whole thing.” He knew then that he wanted to get involved with the business, but life had to fall in line frst. Sheehan completed college and then law school before moving to Temecula in 1998. As soon as he could, he started dabbling in partnerships, then met

Rick Taylor at Special T Toroughbreds. Taylor was in the process of getting two young horses ready for owner B. J. Wright. One was Ultimate Eagle, who earned $547,800 with wins in the Hollywood Derby (G1T) and Strub Stakes (G2). eeding fat has become common practice with horses that need more total energy in their diet, especially horses in athletic careers, young growing horses, thin horses, or lactating broodmares. Kathleen Crandell, PhD, an equine nutritionist with Kentucky Equine Research, explains that fat is a very concentrated energy source.

down and digest fats. In addition, the horse’s natural feeds—forages—contain very little fat. Research during the past four decades, however, shows that horses can well tolerate a diet even as high as 18-20% fat. Some studies at Texas A & M and Cornell University showed that weanlings grow faster with less total feed intake when fat is added to their rations, and performance horses can utilize fat for energy, needing less grain, reducing such risks as colic, laminitis, and ulcers that can occur from a high-grain diet. A fat-supplemented diet has no efect on the pH of the cecum whereas a high carbohydrate diet (grain) can have a very detrimental efect on microbes in the cecum and large colon. If a horse is fed too much grain, some of it gets to the large intestine before being fully digested and can create problems.

Lactating mares that have trouble keeping their weight are often helped by adding fat to their diet.

Tere are vegetable fats and animal fats. “Animal fats include tallow, lard, rendered fat, fsh oil, etc.,” said Crandell. “Lard, tallow, and rendered fat are highly saturated (which makes them solid at room temperature) and fairly unpalatable for horses. Fish fat, as well as most vegetable fats, are usually oils. “Te vegetable oils are nearly 100% fat and usually at least 95% digestible. By contrast, the animal fats are only about 75% digestible. While animal fats are often more economical, they don’t taste as good to horses, have lower digestibility, and tend to become rancid quicker. Most people don’t feed animal fats to horses because there are so many other choices.” Te terms “fat” and “oil” are often interchangeable when discussing fat supplements. Oils are types of fat,

Health and there are basically two types of oils. “One is cold-pressed and the other is solvent-extracted,” said Crandell. “Cold-pressed simply means the oil has been squeezed out of the soybeans, olives, oilseeds, etc. Virgin olive oil is coldpressed, for instance. For the solvent-extraction process, a chemical is used. Te material is frst ground up and then combined with something that dissolves the fat out of the solids. Ten the residue is removed, and what’s left is oil. “You get more oil out of the oilseeds with solvent-extraction, but you are also exposing it to the chemicals. By contrast, the coldpressed material, since the oil is simply squeezed out, leaves a few other nutrients intact within the oil, like vitamin E. Tere are also some other nutritional factors remaining, so cold-pressed oils are the healthiest. “Because the cold-pressed oil contains all these other components, it is more susceptible to rancidity, however. It may not keep as well. You need to keep it cool and in the dark, and use it up fairly quickly. Don’t buy larger amounts than you can use within a reasonable time. Te solvent-extracted oils have longer shelf life.” Options for vegetable oils are many, and include soybean oil, corn oil, sunfower, safower, peanut, olive oil, cottonseed, linseed, coconut, palm, rice, camelina, hemp, and chia. “If you buy vegetable oil in the store, it’s usually a mix of soy and canola oil,” said Crandell. “Mineral oil is not digested and has no nutritional qualities. It is simply given to horses with colic or impaction as a lubricant to help move the contents on through the digestive tract. “Tere are some high-fat ingredients and byproducts you can feed horses, rather than just adding oil to a feed. Tese high-fat products may include ingredients like rice bran, wheat germ, coconut meal, faxseed, sunfower seed, etc.” If you are feeding a high-fat product such as linseed meal or coconut meal, 54

“One reason that some people feed rice oil is because it is high in gamma oryzanol, but it is expensive,” Crandell said. Gamma oryzanol is an antioxidant and supports the growth of lean muscle tissue and healthy levels of digestive enzymes. You would feed them for their other nutritional benefts rather than just energy. You’d generally select those because they are high in omega-3 fatty acids or have a nice balance of both fatty acids. “Omega-3 and omega-6 are both essential fatty acids, which means that the horse can’t produce these in the body and has to get them from the diet. Te omega-6 fatty acids are pro-infammatory. Te body needs some infammatory response to injury, infection, etc. as part of any healing process. But if there is too much of this infammatory response, it can be damaging. “Omega-3 fatty acids are less infammatory, and they help reduce infammation. You need a proper balance between these two kinds of fatty acids. “Some of the benefts from omega-3 fatty acids include support of the immune function. Some of the specifc results from supplementation of omega-3s are improvement in skin conditions; it helps reduce reactions to skin irritations. It also helps horses with allergies and is benefcial for fertility in stallions (sperm concentration, motility, and viability), reproduction in mares, colostrum quality, passive transfer of antibodies to the foal from colostrum, and respiratory health. Horses with infammation in the respiratory tract can be helped with omega-3 supplementation. Tere are also indications that supplementation can help with infammation in joints.” Tus, it is very important to have the right balance between the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, with not too many omega-6s. In the past, most horses were fed corn oil as the added fat in their diet. “It’s palatable and easy to feed, and you can buy it in large containers at reasonable price,” said Crandell. “Ten we discovered that corn oil is high in omega-6 fatty acids. Te omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in corn oil is 56 parts omega-6 to 1 part omega-3.” Grass is a good source of omega-3 fatty 56

FATS CAN GET RANCID Be careful about leaving fats out in the open for lengthy time periods, cautions Kathleen Crandell, PhD, an equine nutritionist with Kentucky Equine Research. “Once the oil is poured out of the bottle and put on the feed, don’t leave the feed sitting for a long time before it is eaten,” she said. “As the oil is exposed to the air, it starts to oxidize and break down and will become rancid. It won’t spoil in just a few minutes, but you wouldn’t want to keep something that’s mixed up in the morning to feed that evening, particularly in hot weather. In the winter it might be OK for 24 hours.” Horses are very sensitive in terms of smell and taste, and they may reject something that smells or tastes rancid. You will know if a horse is eating too much fat or if the fat is rancid because their frm “road apples” will turn into “cow pies.”

It is important to have the right balance between the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, with not too many omega-6s

acids, even though there is not a lot of fat in grass, more than omega-6, says Crandell. So horses on a natural diet of grass get the proper balance for good health.

“We don’t know what the ideal ratio should be in the horse’s body, but current recommendations for humans are about fve parts omega-6 to one part omega-3, which is the opposite of what we fnd in grass. Most oils are higher in omega-6 than omega-3. Corn oil is 56 to1, while linseed oil is 0.2 to 1, which means it is much higher in omega-3 than corn oil is. Te oils that are really high in omega-6 are corn, sunfower, peanut oil, and safower oil. “Coconut oil is a little diferent because it is high in medium-chain fatty acids. If you look at the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3, it looks a little bad (almost 15 omega-6 to 1 omega-3), but most of the oil consists of medium-chain fatty acids. You wouldn’t be feeding coconut oil for the omega-3s.” Palm oil is a little higher in omega-6, but also contains some diferent fatty acids, says Crandell. “Soybean oil and canola have a nice balance,” she said. “Soy is 7 omega-6 to 1 omega-3, so it’s still a little high, but not bad. Tis is the most commonly used oil in commercial concentrate feeds. Canola is only 2-1, so it is higher in omega-3 fatty acids than any of the other commonly used oils. If you buy oil to feed for energy and are also thinking about the omega-3s, canola is probably the best one.” In earlier research looking at corn oil versus rice bran, exercising horses had higher heart rates when fed corn oil. “Whether the omega-3 fatty acids actually afect performance, we don’t know,” Crandell said. “But there are some indications that the oils that are really high in omega-6 fatty acids can adversely afect performance.” Tere are a few new fat products on the market for horses, including hemp oil and camelina oil. “Te camelina is high in omega-3 fatty acids,” said Crandell. “Hemp oil is not as high in omega-3. It is actually higher in omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3, but people tout it because it also has omega-9. Te body can actually make omega-9 fatty acids, however, so it’s not an essential fatty acid. It’s nice to have it in there, but not really necessary.”
