NewsBits ANOTHER REASON TO BE CAL-BRED Any California-bred horse that wins a California-bred frst-conditioned allowance race on turf will be eligible to run in the same condition on dirt at Santa Anita under new terms announced by the track’s racing ofce for the 2020-21 meeting. Likewise, any horse that wins a Cal-bred frst-conditioned allowance race on dirt will be eligible to run in the same condition on turf. Horses that are in for the allowance, regardless of whether they have already won the condition on another surface, will get frst preference. Horses in for claiming price are least preferred. If such a turf race is taken of the grass, a horse that has already won that condition on dirt is still eligible to run regardless of the switch in surface. If such a horse wins the race that was originally scheduled for turf, that horse will no longer be eligible for a comparable race on turf.

COOURTESY OF SANTA ANITA PARK
In the run-up to beginning its 2020-21 winter/spring race meeting, Santa Anita made several appointments and announcements. One of the latest innovations at the track is the creation of a new turf chute, which parallels the track’s seven-furlong maintrack chute. Tis allows for a wider array of turf sprints, and the distances of several turf stakes have been adjusted accordingly. Te turf chute will accommodate sprint races at distances of fve, 51⁄2, six, and 61⁄2 furlongs. In late November, Santa Anita management and several horsemen tested the chute, with excellent results. A pair of horses, ridden by Flavien Prat and Umberto Rispoli, broke from the starting gate at a 61⁄2-furlong setting, transitioned across the main track, and then back to the regular turf course. “What a beautiful Santa Anita will unveil a new turf chute addition,” said Prat. “Tis new chute is fantastic, and it’s in a great place. Both of the horses handled the dirt crossing with no problem at all.” Santa Anita also named Nate Newby, a longtime executive with the track, as general manager and added the title of racing secretary to Chris Merz, the current director of racing. Merz’ new position will make him responsible for writing the condition books. Newby had been serving as senior vice president and assistant general manager under Aidan Butler, who has transitioned to chief operating ofcer of 1/ST Racing and president of 1/ST Content. Butler is now based in Florida. Newby has been with Santa Anita for nearly 20 years and has also served as vice president of marketing. He is also a skilled tournament director and handicapper. Merz returned to the Santa Anita racing ofce in early 2020 after a stint as the racing secretary at the Maryland Jockey Club. In the past he was the stakes coordinator at Santa Anita and Del Mar and the assistant racing secretary at Los Alamitos. Steve Lym, Santa Anita’s vice president of racing since 2018, has been appointed senior vice president for racing development for 1/ST Racing and will be assisting Butler. Santa Anita is also ofering the Sunshine Bonus to attract horses from out of state to the meeting. Te bonuses ofer $3,000 to the owners of any eligible horse making its frst start at Santa Anita, excluding stakes races and frst-time starters. “Excluding stakes and frst-time starters, the Sunshine Bonus will also ofer a 35% bonus to the owners of those horses fnishing frst through ffth in their frst starts here,” said Merz.

Peb, Leggett to Media Roll of Honor Daily Racing Form cartoonist Pierre Bellocq and the late William Leggett have been selected to the National Museum of Racing’s Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor. Leggett was a longtime writer for Sports Illustrated and has contributed to California Toroughbred. Both have previously won Eclipse Awards. Bellocq, 94, was born in France in 1926. At age 19 the French racing journal France Courses published one of his cartoons of a jockey. Bellocq signed the drawing as “Peb,” a signature that became his lifelong moniker. He worked as the staf cartoonist for the Morning Telegraph and its sister paper, Daily Racing Form, a job he held until December 2008. Bellocq has been commissioned by numerous racetracks to produce murals capturing the favor of the sport, including at Del Mar. Leggett, who was born in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1931, became one of racing’s most celebrated and respected writers during his 30-year career at Sports Illustrated. He covered baseball, college and professional basketball, and both Toroughbred and harness racing. Leggett also covered the Olympics, including the U.S. hockey team’s 1960 upset of the Soviet Union. Leggett, who served as president of both the National Turf Writers Association and the New York Turf Writers Association, won an Eclipse Award for his racing writing in 1979. After retiring from Sports Illustrated in 1986, Leggett continued his coverage of the sport as the New York correspondent for Toroughbred Times and as a columnist for Te Saratogian’s racing supplement, Te Pink Sheet. He also wrote some articles for this magazine in the early 1990s. In 1993 Leggett was one of the eight inaugural members of the Saratoga Springs Sports Hall of Fame. He died in 1996 in New York City at the age of 64.

Robert Hess Sr. California racing and breeding lost a valued trainer when Robert Hess Sr. died Dec. 5 at age 86 from complications of COVID-19. Long based in Northern California, Hess trained numerous good California-breds and is the father of Southern California-based trainer Robert Hess Jr. One of Hess Sr.’s favorite runners was California-bred Daddy’s Datsun, a daughter of Pappa’s All—Toyoto Rose, by Martins Rullah. Daddy’s Datsun won the 1973 Osunitas Stakes, 1974 San Juan Bautista Handicap, 1975 Sausalito Handicap, and 1975 San Jose Handicap. The hard-knocking mare started 52 times and earned $156,882. Other Cal-breds Hess trained during all or part of their careers included Annie’s Irish Luck, winner of the 1985 Miss California Stakes, 1986 James Wiggins Handicap, and 1987 Admirably Handicap, and Make Him Famous, winner of the 1980 Sir Francis Drake Stakes as well as the
10
1982 Governor’s Handicap. Hess grew up on a farm in Lititz, Pa., and began his training career in the Pacifc Northwest after serving in the Army. He then spent many years training at Caliente racetrack in Tijuana, Baja California. Hess and his wife, Maria Elena, had four children. The young family relocated to Northern California after Caliente burned down in 1971. Hess and his wife put all of their children through college while Hess trained in Northern California. Two attended Stanford University, one went to the University of California at Berkeley, and the fourth attended the University of Kentucky. Bob Hess Jr., the couple’s eldest child, accompanied his father to the track from an early age. He worked as his father’s assistant beginning in 1983 before going out on his own in 1987. “He taught me everything,” said Bob Jr. “He’s always been a quality, honest horseman of integrity and a great trainer.”

10 YEARS AGO After closing out 2010 with a win in the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes, CALIFORNIA NECTAR successfully graduated to graded company by scoring in the $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes (G2). In the seven-furlong race at Santa Anita Jan. 15, 2011, jockey Pat Valenzuela took California Nectar to the front early. Favored Zazu closed from last but couldn’t quite catch the California-bred, who triumphed by a neck in 1:21.34. Pablo Suarez and his wife, Michelle, bred California Nectar and raced her in the

Owned by Bill Thomas, Klassy Kim led from early in the Monrovia, raced down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course at a distance of about 61⁄2 furlongs. With Goncalino Almeida in the irons, Klassy Kim defeated Ski Dancer by a nose and stopped the timer in 1:14.48. A daughter of champion Silent Screen, Klassy Kim descended from Valenti-bred Irish Arrival, another Cal-bred graded stakes winner and the second dam of Klassy Kim. Mel Stute trained Klassy Kim, who won nine of 39 races and earned $647,107.
50 YEARS AGO A half-century ago, horses competed much more frequently, as California-bred KING OF CRICKET proved. In three weeks, from mid-December 1970 through early January 1971, King of Cricket started in three stakes, winning twice and fnishing third once. After capturing the Dec. 16 Paso Robles Handicap at Bay Meadows, King of Cricket traveled to Santa Anita for the Jan. 2 Palos Verdes Handicap, fnishing third behind Jungle Savage and Ack Ack (the latter going on to become that season’s Horse of the Year). Then in the Jan. 9 Malibu Stakes at seven furlongs, also at Santa Anita, King of Cricket beat Hanalei Bay by 21⁄2 lengths in 1:211⁄5. Danny Velazquez rode the 4-year-old son of Coursing—Our Cricket, by Stymie, in the Malibu for trainer Noble Threewitt. Angelo and Hugh Corradini bred King of Cricket and owned him with John Nuccio.

Golden State Series—Soviet Problem Stakes
Irvin Racing Stable’s Sensible Cat brings home her frst stakes victory in the Soviet Problem at Los Alamitos
GOING THE DISTANCE
SENSIBLE CAT PEDIGREE-PURRFECT IN SOVIET PROBLEM BY TRACY GANTZ
S
ensible Cat’s pedigree indicates distance. Her sire, Bluegrass Cat, and broodmare sire, Street Sense, both performed well in the Triple Crown races. So it isn’t a surprise she has won two races at a mile, yet was unplaced at six furlongs.
“We thought right away she was going to be a horse that wanted two turns,” said Carla Gaines, who trains the flly for Irvin Racing Stable. In just her third start, Sensible Cat became a stakes winner, defeating nine 20
other 2-year-old fllies in the Dec. 12 Soviet Problem Stakes at Los Alamitos. “She had some mucus and was coughing this summer at Del Mar,” said Gaines. “So we missed getting her in a long race there.” Sensible Cat debuted on the fnal day of Del Mar’s summer meet, Sept. 7. In a six-furlong maiden special weight for California-breds or California-sired runners, she was a bit fractious in the gate, getting away second-to-last in the 10-horse feld. Sensible Cat ran sixth at 15-1. “We sprinted her once to get her some experience, and we couldn’t wait to get her going two turns,” said Gaines. Tat opportunity arose Nov. 6 at Del Mar. Sensible Cat switched surfaces, to a mile on the turf, again facing Calbred and Cal-sired maidens. Sitting fourth early, she took command in the upper stretch and scored by two lengths

as the fourth choice in the feld of 10. Sensible Cat remained in state-bred competition for the $100,000 Soviet Problem, again at a mile but back on the dirt. Once again 10 horses lined up, with stakes-placed Dylans Wild Cat sent of as the 5-2 favorite. Juan Hernandez rode Sensible Cat for the frst time. “Carla had me watch the replay of her last race and said to ride her that way,” the jockey explained. Hernandez let Sensible Cat settle into sixth behind Mucha Woman’s early pace. He split horses going into the second turn. Tat still left them four wide into the stretch. But Sensible Cat never gave up, passing Dylans Wild Cat to take the lead and drawing of to win by 13⁄4 lengths in 1:37.94. Governor Goteven came on to nab second by a half-length over Dylans Wild Cat. “I wasn’t sure if she was going to go by early in the stretch,” said Hernandez. “But when I switched and hit her left-handed, she really responded.” Gaines called the efort “tremendous” and noted that “it’s nice to know we have the option of grass or dirt with her.” Gaines has trained for the Irvin family for some time. She conditioned Smokey Image for them to a Cal-bred champion 2-year-old male title in 2015. Robert and Betty Irvin and their daughter, Diane, bred horses in the name of C-Punch Ranch. Robert died before Smokey Image reached the races. Te Irvins continue to breed in the C-Punch Ranch name. Sensible Girl, the dam of Sensible Cat, is unraced. Te mare’s sire, Street Sense, won the 2007 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Travers Stakes (G1), both at 11⁄4 miles. Sensible Cat’s sire, Bluegrass Cat, fnished second in the 2006 Kentucky Derby, 11⁄2-mile Belmont Stakes (G1), and Travers and won the 11⁄8-mile Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1). Ray Bell purchased Sensible Girl as a weanling for $35,000 from Taylor Made Sales Agency at the 2010 Keeneland November sale. Sensible Girl has produced three winners from four starters, including 2018 E. B. Johnston Stakes winner Shades of Victory, by Torn Song.

Tiznow “wins it for America” as he defeats Sakhee, outside, in the 2001 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Belmont Park

inStar Farm stallion manager Larry McGinnis was not pontifcating when he called California-bred Tiznow “one of the greatest racehorses of all time.” And while there are other Golden State stars who had brilliant careers on the racetrack—from California Chrome to Swaps—none had as prolifc a second career as Tiznow, who was ofcially pensioned from stallion duty in October.

A strapping bay with two Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) wins to his credit and earnings of $6,427,830, Tiznow, raced by Cecilia Straub-Rubens, Pam Ziebarth, Kevin Cochrane, and Michael Cooper, has sired fve champions among his 90 stakes winners. His progeny earnings are closing in on $96 million to date. Tiznow defed the odds at every turn, starting with his modest pedigree. StraubRubens matched her winning Seattle Song mare Cee’s Song, who earned just $82,225, to her graded stakes-placed Cee’s Tizzy, a son of Relaunch. A dual allowance winner at Del Mar of impressive speed after breaking his maiden at Hollywood Park, Cee’s Tizzy shipped to Louisiana Downs and ran third in the Super Derby (G1) before an injury ended his racing career. With no major win to his credit, Cee’s Tizzy hardly looked like California’s heir

apparent in the stallion ranks. But the gray horse went on to shine, with grade 1 winners Gourmet Girl and Cost of Freedom to his credit. But perhaps his three best were all from the mating with Cee’s Song. Budroyale came frst, foaled in 1993. Te nondescript bay gelding won 17 of 52 starts for earnings of $2,840,810. He broke his maiden for a $50,000 claiming tag in 1995 and went on to win four grade 2 races and run second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Te youngest of the three, Tizbud, was foaled in 1999. A grade 2-placed winner of the 2003 California Cup Classic Handicap, he became a strong sire in his own right, with grade 1-placed millionaire Soi Phet and grade Grade 1s coast to coast as Tiznow takes the Santa Anita Handicap 1 grass winner Tiz Flirtatious. He is also the sire of 2019 Golden Gate Fields stakes winner Kitty Boom Boom. Looming large among his brothers is Tiznow, who was foaled March 12, 1997, at Harris Farms in Coalinga. “He was very sure of himself from Day 1,” Ziebarth said. “In the barn he would get a little crazy. He could hear the rattling of his favorite peppermint wrappers and would get everyone’s attention to bring him one. As soon as you didn’t have any treats left, your arm or fngers would do. He was kind of menacing that way.” Tiznow with trainer Jay Robbins and his wife, Sandy But he was talented enough to leave intact, unlike gelded brother Budroyale. included grade 3 winner Millencolin, milUnder the tutelage of trainer Jay Robbins lionaire Cal-bred Grey Memo, multiple and while in the colors of Cooper and graded stakes winner Performing Magic, Straub-Rubens, Tiznow had an inauspi- and stakes winner Hemmingsway. But he was still something of an enigma going into the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs, where he would meet a feld that included superb Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus, defending champion Cat Tief, multiple grade 1 winner Lemon Drop Kid, and European superhorse Giant’s Causeway. In one of the greatest stretch drives of all time, pacesetter Tiznow and Giant’s Causeway hooked up just past the quarter pole and battled all the way to the wire. Te Irish standout had every reason to pass Tiznow on the outside, but the bay horse on the rail battled back relentlessly and scored by a neck, ultimately earning him the title of Horse of the Year. “I think because he was a Cal-bred, he was not recognized by the rest of the nation,” Ziebarth said. “He had not traveled to race on the East Coast, and he didn’t have the kind of breeding they would be watching. But if they didn’t notice him before, they did after.” Just three days after the win, StraubRubens died, and daughter Ziebarth inherited her mother’s horses. Te ownership group of Ziebarth, estate director Cooper, and Cochrane ofcially became Cee’s Stable. But trainer Robbins began to experience difculties with Tiznow, who sufered from back problems and could be exceptionally ornery about training. “I had to second-guess pushing for a second year and not stopping on him,” Ziebarth said. “It was really important to me to prove he wasn’t a fuke. But the others were saying we couldn’t be sure we’d even get him to a second Breeders’ Cup.” Robbins carefully campaigned Tiznow through a roller-coaster season in 2001. He won the San Fernando Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2), but fnished second in the Strub Stakes (G2), beaten two lengths with no apparent excuse. Tiznow made the Santa Anita grandstand rumble when he won the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap (G1) by fve lengths, then was of until the Woodward Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park in September, where he fnished third. CALIFORNIA OWNER ROCKING INTO THE NEW YEAR
ith a son drafted into the Atlanta Braves baseball team out of high school and a daughter who is a multiple national champion ice skater, Gary Hartunian dedicated much of his life to sport. When the children’s respective careers ended, the real estate giant found he missed the thrill. “I was always really involved with my kids,” Hartunian said. “I was looking for something to spend my time on.” He likes to joke that he could have bought a plane or a yacht, but instead opted to buy a horse at Del Mar. “I got involved with Dave Lanzman, who won a
Breeders’ Cup with Squirtle Squirt,” Hartunian said. “I was learning with him and watching what they were doing, and really started liking it a lot. Te competition was great, and I loved the thought of going to the sales and fnding the best horse.” With the help of trainer Peter Miller, Hartunian bought his frst horse in 2012. He went to $50,000 to secure the race-ready gelding Fast N Furius Cat at the Barretts paddock sale at Del Mar, earned $8,520 next out when the horse ran third, and then lost him for $32,000 just one month after buying him. Undeterred, Hartunian jumped in. “One thing led to another, and I bought about 25 horses,” he said.

Hartunian’s Rockingham Ranch quickly rode a meteoric rise to fame. He won 12 races in 2013, then another 22 in 2014. He broke the $1 million earnings barrier in 2015 with the help of horses such as California-bred Richard’s Boy, a son of Idiot Proof—Marissa’s Joy, by Cee’s Tizzy, who won stakes races at Santa Anita,Santa Rosa, and Pimlico. Cal-bred runners propelled the stable through 2016 as well, headed by the brilliant California Diamond, who became the Golden State’s champion 2-year-old male. Te son of Harbor the Gold—Carrie’s a Jewel, by Slewdledo, won fve times that year with four seconds, and racked up victories in the $125,345 Santa Anita Juvenile, $100,000 Barretts Juvenile, $84,745 Speakeasy, and the $196,000 Golden State Juvenile stakes. California Diamond was also second in the Bob Hope Stakes (G3). He wasn’t the only good Cal-bred that year for Rockingham. Bad Ju Ju won the $94,935 Kalookan Queen Stakes and four other races, and Richard’s Boy placed in four stakes, including the grade 3 Eddie D Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita. Te year 2017 handed Hartunian the highest highs and staggering lows. Rockingham Ranch won a pair of Breeders’ Cup races with Roy H ($1,380,000 TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint, G1) and Stormy Liberal ($920,000 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, G1T). But just one month later California Diamond was lost in the raging Lilac Fire at San Luis Rey Downs. Te

RED BAG FOALING
PREPARING FOR THE UPCOMING FOALING SEASON BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

ost equine births are accomplished without problems. A mare in second-stage active labor breaks her water, lies down, and almost immediately the foal’s front feet appear, followed by nose and head. With a few forceful contractions, the mare delivers the foal. Occasionally, however, there are problems that hinder that swift progression, resulting in a life-threatening emergency.

someone is there, however, the placenta can be cut open. Tat person can generally go ahead and provide controlled assistance to bring the foal on out quickly, or at least pull that bag across and of the foal’s head and nose, so it is behind the ears and there is no obstruction as the mare pushes the foal on out.” If the placenta is coming out with the foal, stage three labor is accomplished at the same time. “We typically don’t have to worry about retained fetal membranes,” said Schroeder. “Stage two and three are happening simultaneously and all is well, but I still like to try to fgure out the reason why the mare had a red bag delivery. Is it just happenstance, or was there something in her recent medical history that triggered this? Has she been sick with diarrhea, colic, or some other problem? Was she a problem mare to get bred? Does she have a history (or previous history) of bacterial or viral placentitis? Was she exposed to a toxin like Eastern tent caterpillars? Did she have any infectious reproductive diseases such as herpes virus or a fungal endometritis? It’s a good idea to do some investigative work to fgure it out.” Ideally, the placenta in this situation would be submitted to a diagnostic lab to have it checked for any evidence of disease. “Te last thing we’d want to see on
any farm is a brewing underlying problem that no one knew about until this mare’s red bag delivery,” said Schroeder. “Tis could be one of the frst signs of major abortion-causing problems that might afect other mares, which could be very devastating.”
If someone was there to cut through the placenta in time and the foal is born quickly, he will probably be fne. In some instances he may have been without oxygen too long, which might result in ‘dummy foal’ syndrome.” — Dr. Eric Schroeder
If someone was there to cut through the placenta in time and the foal is born quickly, he will probably be fne. But it is always wise to have a veterinarian examine the foal. In some instances, he may have been without oxygen too long, which might result in “dummy foal” syndrome (perinatal asphyxia syndrome). “He may have been compromised more than a foal born normally,” said Schroeder. “Is he nursing regularly, getting up and down normally? Is he
going through the normal cycle of getting up, nursing, napping, playing, etc. multiple times per hour? Tese foals usually act normally for the frst 24 hours. After that they may decline. “I tell people to diligently monitor that foal for the frst 72 hours. Tis isn’t a mare and foal you would just turn out to pasture. You’d want them where they can be readily observed, and then you’d know if the foal becomes dull and is lying around more. You’d notice that the foal (who was up nursing vigorously at frst) is now just lying around and more lethargic. “At our referral hospital, we are usually dealing with the afterefects. Either the foal didn’t survive because they missed the birth and want to know what to do in the future to try to prevent this happening again, or I may be dealing with a foal that’s slow, born with a red bag delivery. People might bring the foal here for us to monitor, to make sure everything is normal and going correctly, or the foal is already showing some of the classic clinical signs of dummy foal syndrome.” VIGILANCE IS CRUCIAL
Tough causes of red bag delivery might be difcult to ascertain, educating people about what to do when one occurs can save equine lives. “It’s not a sit-and-wait situation,” said Schroeder. “If you see this dark red bag
Fescue toxicity can be a problem in red bag deliveries. But it is not easy to test for. “I can’t draw blood on the mare or foal to determine if this might have been the situation,” said Dr. Eric Schroeder of The Ohio State University. “The main thing is information from the owner. Perhaps they reseeded the pasture and inadvertently planted fescue that wasn’t endophyte-free. Not all fescue is a problem. Most seed companies now offer genetically altered fescue that is endophyte-free. The more common problem with endo-

phyte-infected fescue is lack of milk production after foaling, rather than a red bag delivery. “Here in Ohio, out of 100 foals we may have only one affected. In central Kentucky it might be slightly more common. But in the general population of foaling mares, the lack of milk is a much bigger problem than a red bag delivery. If the owner believes there might be a problem at foaling (due to fescue), they should have people watching that mare around the clock. Foal-watching can make a big difference on the ones we are worried about.”

thing sharp) to get a hole through the placenta big enough to get fngers into and pull it apart. “All my technicians here at the hospital are trained to act fast,” said Schroeder. “If they see this happen, they need to open up that red bag and call us afterward. starting to show at the vulva, it’s time to act now. Not much of it has to be out for you to be able to make a small cut in it, because after you get that cut started you can tear it. “Once you do that, Mother Nature can pretty much take over. But if I was the person opening up that placenta, I would probably go ahead and actively help pull that foal on out, rather than just stand there and wait. It’s time to get that foal out.” A red bag delivery is one more reason to monitor all births. “All too often people fnd the newborn foal dead, still encased in that red bag because he was unable to get through it,” said Schroeder. “Te foal is at an extreme disadvantage.” On big breeding farms, people are usually watching mares around the clock in foaling barns. “Te typical schedule is to check mares every 15 minutes or even more frequently,” said Schroeder, “and some barns have cameras/videos or foaling alert systems to signal the beginning of stage two labor. If it’s a valuable mare or a high-risk case, they may pay someone to sit there and watch that mare, or take shifts. “Tey try to give every mare every possibility of a positive outcome. A red bag emergency may not be as frequent as some of the other major problems, but it can be a serious issue. “Once you see it, you never forget it. Tis is a traumatic emergency, and the farm personnel are the only ones who will be able to save the foal. Tey are probably the only people able to do something in time, unless the veterinarian is already there on the farm and in that foaling barn. On a big horse farm the vet may be clear over on the other side of the farm, so the farm employees may still have to try to save the foal.” Each barn’s foaling kit will likely contain things that might be needed for many kinds of emergencies, and scissors should be part of any kit. If you are in the stall with the mare when a red bag delivery happens and there isn’t time to run to the foaling kit, you could carefully use a pocketknife (or any-

for this possibility. It happens quickly, and if a person has to think about it or call a veterinarian, it is usually too late.” POST-FOALING
After a red bag delivery, you don’t have to do much for the mare. “She has already shed the placenta and cleaned out,” said Schroeder. “Tere should be no reason she can’t carry more foals, unless there is something vastly wrong with the placenta and its attachments.” It pays to check that placenta. “Tis is something many owners forget, and I stress the importance of allowing me to test it and/or do histopathology, looking at it under a microscope,” he said. “If there are large areas

is important to get it to a pathologist as soon as possible. “You can’t leave it lying out in the hot sun for several hours, drying out,” said Schroeder. “Collect it and keep it clean, in a plastic trash bag, to send immediately. Or if the mare foaled at night, you can put it in the refrigerator until it can be sent the next morning. “In areas of the country with many breeding farms, the labs are prepared to deal with these things during foaling season and are open seven days a week. Most veterinarians doing reproductive work or newborn foal exams would be in tune with what to do and where to send it and what to ask for. Tere are people who specialize in this, but any pathologist should be able to handle it.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Dec. 13, 2020.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
