Dr. Jef Blea, a well-respected racetrack veterinarian, has been appointed as the equine medical director (EMD) serving the California Horse Racing Board. He will take over in July upon the retirement of Dr. Rick Arthur from the position. Blea brings 28 years of veterinary experience with him, and before that he had a brief Dr. Jeff Blea stint as a jockey. He is a past president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the Southern California Equine Foundation and served as a director of the Dolly Green Research Foundation from 1999-2015. He is currently a trustee of the California Toroughbred Foundation. Dr. Gregory Ferraro, chairman of the CHRB and a former equine veterinarian himself, described Blea as “a nationally known and widely respected equine veterinarian. He is recognized for his clear thinking and fairness in his decision making.” Arthur noted, “Dr. Blea is an excellent choice to become EMD. He has a broad background in horse racing and is well respected by his colleagues here in California and nationally.”
FOALS OF RACING AGE

California-bred Lovely Finish, a survivor of the 2017 Lilac Fire at San Luis Rey Downs, scored an emotional maiden victory for owners Joe Herrick Racing Stables and Red Silk Stables at Los Alamitos Feb. 13. Ridden by Anthony Locke, Lovely Finish pulled away from her rivals in route to a 3 1⁄2-length win in the 1,000-yard race during the Los Alamitos evening Quarter Horse meeting. “I had to keep myself from getting emotional because she and I almost lost our lives together,” said Herrick. In saving Lovely Finish from the wildfre Dec. 7, 2017, Herrick was burned on 23% of his body. After months of recovery for both trainer and horse, Lovely Finish, who had started only once, returned to the races, running third in a 51⁄2-furlong race during the Los Angeles County Fair Meet at Los Alamitos Sept. 20, 2018. Te 6-year-old daughter of Marino Marini—Corazon de Leo, by Flame Trower, has fnished third or better in each of her eight starts. “She’s run well every time,” Herrick added. “She’s never had a bad race. I’ve taken care of her and never ran her when she was compromised. We’ve really taken care of this horse.” Occasionally, Lovely Finish has been a little fnicky while waiting in the starting gate. Herrick has responded by spending a lot of time schooling her in the mornings at San Luis Rey Downs. “She was waiting on the horses to come to her tonight,” said Herrick. “She was only going to run as hard as she needed to.”
QUALIFYING CLAIMING LEVELS The following claiming levels for California owners premiums and stallion awards are currently in effect: SANTA ANITA PARK / $40,000 GOLDEN GATE FIELDS / $20,000
Under contract arrangements between the CHRB and the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, the EMD serves as a member of its faculty. “As equine medical director,” said Blea, “I look forward to working with industry stakeholders in further advancing the progressive transformation of horse racing in California with the emphasis on horse safety, welfare, and integrity.”

WILD WEST BONUS OFFERS $1 MILLION
IN
Santa Anita Park and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club have created the Wild West Bonus, which offers $1 million in additional money to the winning connections of any horse that wins the March 6 Santa Anita Handicap (G1), May 31 Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita (G1), and Aug. 21 TVG Pacifc Classic (G1) at Del Mar. Only three horses have swept those three stakes in the same year, the frst being California-bred Lava Man in 2006. Game On Dude followed in 2013, with Accelerate the most recent in 2018. Including the $1 million bonus, any horse sweeping these three 11⁄4-mile races would bank a total of $1,870,000. On Santa Anita Handicap day, Santa Anita will also boost overnight races by $15,000 per race and increase the China Doll Stakes purse from $75,000 to $100,000.
Julio Canani
© BENOIT PHOTO
Julio Canani, a successful Southern California-based trainer of Breeders’ Cup winners, died Feb. 5 at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena at age 83. Canani trained the winners of 1,137 races for purse earnings of more than $49 million. His career ended in 2015 following a suspension of his license for alleged improprieties in the sale of racehorses. In his heyday, Canani trained horses at the highest level. He won the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1T) twice, in 2001 with Val Royal and in 1999 with Silic, and the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) with Sweet Catomine. With 50-1 longshot Martial Law, Canani won the 1989 Santa Anita Handicap (G1). Born in Peru in 1938, Canani left home at age 16. After emigrating to the U.S., he worked for a landscaping company before he came to the racetrack and walked hots for trainer A.T. (Tommy) Doyle. Canani took out his trainer’s license in 1968, primarily training claimers until 1975, when he won his frst stakes, the Oceanside Stakes, with Willmar. He saddled jockey Bill Shoemaker’s last mount, Patchy Groundfog, on Feb. 3, 1990, at Santa Anita. Shoemaker fnished fourth. Canani trained Val Royal for producer and writer David Milch, who put Canani in a few episodes of his television series “Deadwood” and “NYPD Blue.” “I get to be in a bar and spit on someone,” Canani once said of “Deadwood.” A decade ago Milch created the Peruvian trainer Turo Escalante based on Canani as a character for the short-lived racetrack-based series “Luck.” Canani is survived by his wife, Svetlana; his four children, Nick, Lisa, Isabella, and Alexander; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The Canani family has requested donations be made to the Edwin J. Gregson Foundation.

George O’Bryan
CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ March 2021 ❙ www.ctba.com
Longtime noted jockey agent and California breeder George O’Bryan, who turned 100 last October, died Feb. 11 at
Arcadia Methodist Hospital, according to his son, Craig O’Bryan. From the 1940s into the 1990s, O’Bryan represented many of the country’s leading jockeys, including Hall of Fame riders Johnny Adams, Ralph Neves, Manuel Ycaza, Lafft Pincay Jr., and Donald Pierce. Born in Taylorville, Ill., O’Bryan had a brief career as a jockey, riding for eventual Hall of Fame conditioners Ben Jones and his son Jimmy in the Midwest. Following his career as an agent, O’Bryan, along with his late wife, Mercedes, bred and owned horses in California. They bred the Don B. mare Don’s Quillo, a California-bred who produced Cal-bred millionaire Megan’s Interco. Megan’s Interco won two editions of the California Cup Mile and the 1996 Wells Fargo Bank California Cup Classic. George O’Bryan was predeceased by his wife, Mercedes. He is survived by his son, Craig, who is currently representing jockey Juan Hernandez; a daughter, Shannon; grandsons Brandon (agent for apprentice Jessica Pyfer) and Kyle; and three great-grandchildren.
Dagoberto Perez Longtime trainer and California-based horseman Dagoberto Perez died Jan. 21 at age 80. Familiar and well-liked, he was a fxture at Hollywood Park for decades, often seen with his signature cigar and fedora as he followed each of his horses to the track. Born in Cuba and a trainer there before immigrating to the United States in 1961, Perez worked on the East Coast as an assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Frank “Pancho” Martin. While with Martin, he worked with such stakes winners as Sham, Autobiography, and Never Bow. Perez headed west with the Martin barn, and he decided not to return to New York when Martin did. Perez worked as an assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Laz Barrera until Barrera’s death in 1991. Perez raised a family during those years, and he later returned to training a small stable of his own. Horses Perez trained include California-bred Her Reality, an earner of $199,925, and Cal-bred Ghostly Girl, an earner of $93,556. Perez is survived by his wife, Aurora; his adult children, Lisa and Dagoberto Jr.; and a grandson, David.

PET Scanner a “Game Changer for Horse Safety” As a major step forward in diagnostics to aid in Toroughbred racehorse health, the frst-ever standing positron emission tomography (PET) machine was installed on the Santa Anita backstretch in late 2019. Dr. Mathieu Spriet, an associate professor at the University of California, Davis, developed the Longmile Positron Emission Tomography (MILEPET) Scan machine at the university in partnership with the Brain Biosciences and Longmile Veterinary Imaging Division. The PET machine at Santa Anita Dr. Jef Blea, a racetrack veterinary practitioner since 1994, noted the advantages the PET scanner brings, saying: “Te PET scan at Santa Anita, in conjunction with the relationship with Dr. Spriet and his colleagues at UC Davis, has allowed veterinarians here in Southern California to advance the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal issues in racehorses well beyond anyone’s expectations. Tis pioneering technology certainly has been, and will continue to be, a positive game changer for horse safety.” Dr. Blea, a past president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the Southern California Equine Foundation, serves as a trustee of the California Toroughbred Foundation. Te Foundation, dedicated to the advancement of equine research and education, regularly funds scholarships to veterinary students in an efort to further Toroughbred racehorse health and safety. As such, the Foundation applauds the industry for coming together to bring the PET scanner to Santa Anita. It was a joint efort of many, with Te Stronach Group and the Dolly Green Research Foundation providing the principal funding for the equipment, which has been installed in the nuclear medicine facility, run by the SCEF. With just over a year in use, the equipment is proving invaluable in keeping California’s equine athletes sound.

long with celebrating the arrival of a widely anticipated new year, there was a homecoming party under way at Ocean Breeze Ranch near Bonsall, where the racetrack hero I’ll Have Another has returned to his racing connections to stand at stud. Te 2012 champion 3-year-old male, who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes (both G1) before being injured and retired while on the cusp of winning the Triple Crown, returned stateside two years ago from stud duty in

Japan. In 2020 he was purchased by principals connected to Reddam Racing, for whom he earned $2,693,600 at the track, and is standing the 2021 season at Ocean Breeze, which is owned by Paul and Zillah Reddam in a trust. “Everyone has become so attached to him, and he’s very happy to be here,” said Zillah Reddam. “Dennis (O’Neill, who purchased the son of Flower Alley at a 2-year-old sale for Reddam Racing) has come to see him, Mario (Gutierrez, who rode I’ll Have Another) and his family. Everybody takes photos with him.” I’ll Have Another provided the Reddams with their frst Kentucky Derby triumph (Nyquist would come along four

years later to repeat the feat) and holds a special place in their hearts. Standing him at stud seemed a natural decision, considering they had just pensioned from stallion duty another of their racetrack stars, Square Eddie, a year ago. Square Eddie laid down a marker and will be a tough act to follow, as he has become the sire of dozens of runners who have shown their mettle in California-bred and open competition. On the strength of Square Eddie’s progeny, the Reddams last year led all other California-based breeders in earnings. Te California Toroughbred Breeders Association also will honor Square Eddie as the leading California sire of California-conceived foals by earnings for the third consecutive year. Joining I’ll Have Another in the Ocean Breeze Ranch stallion complex this year are two other Reddam Racing runners who earned grade 1 victories. Pavel and Mrazek will each try to do their part in picking up the slack from the departure of Square Eddie, who remains a resident of Ocean Breeze. About fve years ago the Reddams made the decision to purchase the ranch’s 1,290 acres, which are located just a mile from the San Luis Rey Downs training facility. Te land was formerly known as Vessels Stallion Farm and was founded by noted horseman Frank “Scoop” Vessels, a prominent breeder of
Quarter Horses. His grandfather, Frank Vessels Sr., founded Los Alamitos Race Course, and Scoop Vessels eventually expanded into Toroughbreds and served as president of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association. In Excess, who would become important in Toroughbred pedigrees largely through his son Indian Charlie, stood at Vessels. Te Reddams’ connection to Vessels began when they im-

ported a 1998 son of Nureyev to the U.S. early in this century. Momentum became a graded stakes winner in California but raced in tough luck, fnishing second in the Hollywood Gold Cup and the Pacifc Classic (both G1). Te Reddams decided to give him a whirl as a stallion and selected Vessels as the place to stand him, beginning a longtime relationship with the farm. While Momentum didn’t turn out to be a great sire, the Reddams decided to start turning their horses out at the farm. After Square Eddie earned grade 1 laurels in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland, the Reddams installed him at stud at Vessels beginning in 2010. “We went down to visit Square Eddie and our other horses at Vessels on a Saturday, and we were walking around and chatting with Scoop Vessels,” remembered Paul Reddam. “And three days later he died in a plane crash. Everyone was shaken. Years later they put the farm up for sale, and we made a deal to buy it in 2015.” Reddam, who often names his horses with tongue frmly in cheek, came up with the ranch’s name after someone insisted they could feel the ocean breeze at the main house. “It’s 10 miles from the ocean,” said Reddam. “So I thought, ‘Tere it is.’ Ocean Breeze.” Te Reddams retained the staf that had worked at the property when it was Vessels. Kasey Bennett started at Vessels in 2008 and now oversees the operation for the Reddams as the farm manager. Ocean Breeze serves as an early breaking facility for the young horses foaled there, as well as a rehabilitation center for Reddam Racing horses needing a break from the track or recovery time after medical procedures. Some 50 broodmares roam the Ocean Breeze valley. “Dihigi Gladney, who was the exercise rider for California Chrome, and his team come in and foal them out, and we raise them on pasture for the most part,” said Bennett. “After they’re weaned, our crew will start handling them, and at the 18-month mark we separate them into two groups. Te forward ones get 45-60 days working in the breaking pens, and 22

An underwater treadmill was installed last year. Tere is a standing, saltwater spa, plus a vibration stall. Laser therapy aids post-surgery horses. And there are variably sized paddocks for horses undergoing therapy. “I would like to do spa treatments like they get,” said Bennett with a laugh. DAVE HOFMANS BY EMILY SHIELDS
ANNE M. EBERHARDT
CAL-BRED TRAINER EXTOLS THE CAL-BRED PROGRAM
D
ave Hofmans is quick to point out that not only does he love and support the California-bred racing program, he is a Cal-bred himself. “I was born and raised right here in Southern California,” the afable trainer said. On top of that, he has a marvelous Golden State runner currently in the barn in Big Fish, and his all-time favorite horse was a Cal-bred, too. After growing up in the sport as a groom and hot-walker, Hofmans spent time working for trainers Bobby Frankel and Farrell Jones. He got his frst win as a trainer in 1974 over the hallowed Santa Anita course and has been winning races there ever since. In 1986 Hofmans began an association with Georgia Ridder, widow of B.J. “Ben” Ridder; both of the Ridders
were active members of the California breeding and racing community and had resided in nearby Pasadena. Teir standout stallion Flying Paster won the Santa Anita and Hollywood Derbies and was the 1978 Cal-bred Horse of the Year. Flying Paster stood in California and sired numerous feet runners, including Hofmans trainee Past Ages. After Past Ages won his frst two starts, the dark bay gelding placed in a pair of graded stakes events before taking the 1989 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes. Past Ages ultimately lost the honor of being the state’s top juvenile that year to a horse named Individualist, who was running for Golden Eagle Farm. Te trainer? Dave Hofmans. During that 1989 season, Hofmans spent the entire year winning at a 29% clip, and a lot of that was thanks in part to Georgia Ridder.

“Tere were a few of those good Flying Paster colts I got,” Hofmans said. While His Legacy wasn’t a son of Flying Paster, he was Hofmans’ favorite horse of all time. Te Cal-bred son of Pocketful in Vail – Quella B., by Don B., ran 47 times with 14 wins, 11 seconds, and six thirds, earning $420,925. His Legacy raced through age 9, and owner Pete Parrella retired him to his Legacy Ranch, where the gelding lived out his life with another talented runner, the Quarter Horse Griswold. “Tat was undoubtedly my favorite horse ever; my son (Grant) and I loved that horse,” said Hofmans. One race Hofmans will never forget is His Legacy’s fnal start, the 1994 California Cup Starter Handicap. Te 9-year-old had already won the race twice and fnished second in it once. “He was coming down the stretch, and took the lead with Paul Atkinson up,” said Hofmans. “I’m crying; I look over and my son is crying— just two tough guys crying our eyes out.” Hofmans has trained many standout horses—among them, 1996 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) shocker Alphabet Soup, owned by Georgia Ridder. Alphabet Soup defeated the great Cigar that day, Cigar fnishing third. Hofmans also trained 1997 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Touch Gold, 2003 Breeders’ Cup Distaf (G1) surprise Adoration, and Awesome Again during his early career. Awesome Again won Canada’s Queen’s Plate in 1997 while in Hofmans’ care. Adoration also gave

Hofmans perhaps his most gratifying victory the year after she won her Breeders’ Cup race at 40-1. Tree starts later she won the 2004 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (G1) at Santa Anita. It validated Adoration’s ability, proving that the Breeders’ Cup wasn’t an anomaly. “People were saying it was a fuke; the favorite (Sightseek) didn’t fre,” Hofmans recalled of the Breeders’ Cup. “But after winning at Del Mar and running third in her prep at Santa Anita, I looked over the Distaf feld and I thought it wasn’t that tough. To come back and win another grade 1 a few months later, that was really great.” Hofmans has developed other grade 1 stars, such as 2016 Santa Anita Handicap (G1) hero Melatonin and the brilliant Siphonic, a grade 1 winner at 2 who lost his life too early. Trough it all, Cal-breds were Hofmans’ bread and butter, including the popular Greg’s Gold. BALANCING VITAMIN A
Vitamins are essential for horses’ health and vitality
A PRIMER FOR THE VITAMIN ALPHABET BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

itamins are organic compounds required in trace amounts to help regulate body functions. Dr. Kathleen Crandell, an equine nutritionist with Kentucky Equine Research, says A is probably one of the most important vitamins because it plays so many diferent roles in the body.
36
“Vitamins are either fat-soluble or water-soluble, and this just refers to the way they are handled in the body,” Crandell said. Te fat-soluble vitamins are A, E, D, and K. Water-soluble vitamins include all the B vitamins and vitamin C. Fat-soluble vitamins can be stored in the body, and water-soluble vitamins are not. “If there’s not enough fat in the diet, the body can’t absorb very much of a fat-soluble vitamin because fat helps these vitamins pass through the mucosal wall in the intestinal lining,” Crandell explained. “Wa-

ter-soluble vitamins pass through the wall readily, without the need of fat. Humans on low-fat diets compromise the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and are at risk of becoming defcient in vitamins A or D.” WHAT IS VITAMIN A?
“Vitamin A is a general term for many forms of retinol,” said Crandell. “After it’s absorbed by the body, it goes through various forms as it goes from storage to distribution to target cells. Carotene in green plants is converted to vitamin A in the intestinal wall. Green grass is an excellent
ROLE OF THE LIVER
Te liver stores extra vitamin A and dispenses it as needed in the body, thus regulating the amount in the bloodstream. “Tere can be a high buildup of vitamin A in the liver,” said Crandell. “But a blood sample won’t show you the levels in the liver because it is controlling the amount of vitamin A released into the bloodstream. It is limited by the amount of retinol-binding protein in the liver to carry it out of the liver through the bloodstream to the cells that need it.” Not until there’s a huge amount of vitamin A would you see toxicity. Most symptoms of toxicity stem from liver damage, when the liver can’t function properly to regulate the amount of vitamin A circulating in the body.

source of carotenes; the greener the color, the more carotenes in that plant.” Horses on green pasture or fresh alfalfa hay get plenty of vitamin A. “Te most abundant source of vitamin A is beta-carotene,” Crandell said. “When a horse eats grass, a certain enzyme within the cells in the intestinal tract converts carotene to vitamin A, and it is absorbed into the body as vitamin A, though some carotenes are absorbed directly. “Sometimes if humans eat too much beta-carotene, they get a yellow or orange tinge to the skin. Tis doesn’t happen in horses, because horses have poor absorption of the intact beta-carotenes.” Horses have been eating large amounts of carotene in forages for a long time. “Tey will never get vitamin A toxicity from eating naturally-occurring carotenes, due to a limited amount of an enzyme (called Beta-carotene 15, 15’-dioxygenase) to convert the carotenes to vitamin A. “From beta-carotene, the horse can actually get two retinols, once it is absorbed. After going through the intestinal wall, it goes into the lymphatic system rather than directly into the bloodstream, and from the lymph it goes into the liver, where it becomes bound to the retinol-binding proteins and then can be distributed throughout the body. “Some vitamin A is recycled in the body and some is used up, so there always needs to be some vitamin A in the diet to replace what is used.”
Green pastures and fresh alfalfa hay are excellent sources of vitamin A for horses
FUNCTIONS OF VITAMIN A
One of the many important roles of vitamin A is to help facilitate vision. Tis is obvious from the term used for vitamin A once it is in the body; it becomes retinol. Te retina is one of the major structures of the eye. “Vitamin A is crucial to the function of the eye as it receives light,” said Crandell. “Vitamin A is also important to health of epithelium cells, which include skin, the lining of the intestinal tract, lungs, reproductive tract, and the eye (the eyeball itself and the cornea).” Since vitamin A afects so many things, defciency or extreme excess of this vitamin can have serious repercussions, and the effects are similar. “Te skin won’t have normal turnover of skin cells, so there is thickening of the skin,” said Crandell. “Tere will also be thickening of the intestinal wall, which interferes with absorption of nutrients. “Vitamin A is important for immune function; it helps with the diferentiation of various immune cells and production of lymphocytes and macrophages (blood cells that combat pathogens in the body). Carotene also helps with immune function, but in a diferent way. Vitamin A also helps inhibit the growth of tumors.” It is also important for growth and bone remodeling. Vitamin A helps control the two types of bone cells—osteoblasts, the
bone cells that are growing, and osteoclasts, the bone cells that break down. “Tere must always be some bone-cell turnover for healthy growth of bones,” said Crandell. “If there is not enough vitamin A, or an excessive amount of vitamin A, the osteoclasts don’t work properly. Tis results in thickening of the bone—but not in a healthy way, like increasing bone density. Te bone just becomes shorter and thicker. “Vitamin A also helps with degradation of aminoglycans and synthesis of proteoglycans, which afect cartilage. For healthy cartilage, a young, growing horse needs adequate vitamin A. “Tis vitamin also afects growth-hormone regulation, which is also important for the growing horse. Tis is one reason we see slow growth/poor growth in young horses that are defcient in vitamin A.” Vitamin A is also important for proper embryonic development. Defciency can cause embryonic loss if the embryo can’t develop properly. Vitamin A afects reproduction because it is crucial for a healthy lining in the reproductive tract. “It also helps with production of sperm cells (spermatogenesis) and eggs, and is important for cells in the placenta, as well as fetal growth,” Crandell said. If a mare doesn’t have enough vitamin A, or has too much, the unhealthy lining of the reproductive tract afects estrus. “Tis vitamin is also important in production of steroid hormones, in both males and females—such as progesterone and estrogen,” said Crandell. “Vitamin A passes from the dam to the fetus, but not enough to create stores in the foal’s liver. Foals are not born defcient but need to have vitamin A in their diet from birth onward. Te mare’s milk is a good source of vitamin A. Tere is a lot of vitamin A in milk.” INTERACTIONS
A well-balanced diet is essential for good health. Defciencies or excesses of some nutrients can afect the absorption and function of others. “If there’s not enough protein, for instance, the body can’t transport vitamin A around,” said Crandell. “It needs retinal-binding proteins that carry it in the bloodstream.” Tere must also be enough fat in the diet to facilitate movement and absorption for

37
Health fat-soluble vitamins. “Carotene and vitamin A need fat to transport them and to be absorbed,” said Crandell. “Grass is usually only 2-5% fat, but this is enough for what the horse needs for fat-soluble vitamins.” Zinc also interacts with vitamin A. A horse defcient in zinc is often defcient in circulating vitamin A as well. “We think it’s because zinc is necessary for production of retinal-binding protein,” said Crandell. “Zinc is also a component in hundreds of important enzymes in the body, so adequate amounts of this trace mineral are crucial. If there are good zinc levels in the bloodstream, there are usually good levels of vitamin A as well. Zinc and vitamin A are not antagonistic. “Copper, on the other hand, has an inverse relationship with vitamin A. High copper levels afect stability of vitamin A, but copper and zinc are also involved in the enzyme that converts beta-carotene to retinol (vitamin A) in the digestive tract.” Vitamin E works hand-in-hand with vitamin A. “Tey work together to a certain point, so if vitamin A is a little low and vitamin E levels are higher, the vitamin E can compensate; you’d be less apt to see some of the problems that might occur with vitamin A defciency. If you get too much vitamin A, however, it starts afecting vitamin E’s ability to protect body cells against oxidation. Excess vitamin A also decreases the body’s ability to absorb vitamin E in the digestive tract.”
Vitamin A defciency can occur if horses do not get enough green pastures, an excellent source of carotene, to graze. The greener the grass, the more carotenes it contains.
test horses and then gave them a dose of vitamin A, and 15 hours later when it had peaked I took another blood sample—to see a rise and fall, or lack of rise in this vitamin. If there was a large rise in blood levels, this could be an indication that the horse was defcient.” Crandell performed this study over a three-year period.
Concentrate feeds supply vitamin A because all manufacturers add a standard amount. Tis level may drop, however, over time.” — Dr. Kathleen Crandell
VITAMIN A DEFICIENCY
Defciencies can occur if horses are never on pasture and don’t get enough green forage—if hay is old and doesn’t have much carotene left. It’s not easy to check vitamin A levels in the blood to determine whether a horse is defcient or has too much of this vitamin. “Because vitamin A level is maintained in the blood by the liver, taking a blood sample doesn’t always give an accurate indication,” said Crandell. It’s more efective to use a function test for vitamin A. “Tis is called relative dose response (RDR)—giving a dose of vitamin A, then looking at how the body reacts to it. In my PhD work, I took blood samples from 38
“Te frst year we were trying to induce defciency in vitamin A,” she said. “We were unable to make horses on pasture defcient, but in winter when grass was no longer green, the relative dose response showed they were becoming defcient. As there started to be a little bit of green in the grass in the spring, however, the defciency resolved.” Some horses in the study were in a dry lot and fed 2-year-old hay. Tere isn’t much vitamin A left in hay by the time it’s that old. “As soon as hay is cut, vitamin A level starts dropping,” Crandell said. “In earlier studies, researchers found that 80% of the
CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ March 2021 ❙ www.ctba.com
carotenes in alfalfa hay were gone by 24 hours.” Green, leafy alfalfa hay has a lot of vitamin A, however, because the remaining carotene levels are still adequate for many months. “Loss of vitamin A in hay is estimated at about 10% per month as it continues to decrease,” said Crandell. “So after 2 years the hay will be low in vitamin A, with very little carotene left. Te horses in my study that were fed 2-year-old hay in a dry lot were defcient after six months. Te liver stores vitamin A, and this is how horses can go through winter without becoming defcient. A fully loaded liver can provide the needed vitamin A, but if horses are on old hay for a longer period, they may become defcient. “Concentrate feeds supply vitamin A because all manufacturers add a standard amount. Tis level may drop, however, over time.” If you are feeding a bag of feed that’s a year old, the vitamin A level won’t be what it was originally. “Some of this vitamin is lost in the manufacturing or pelleting process (especially if there is heat involved),” said Crandell. “But today the form of vitamin A that feed manufactures use has a protective coating that enables more of it to make it through processing. Te protective coating also slows the degradation that normally takes place over time. “Tus, if a bag of feed was just a few months old, it would still have good levels
of vitamin A—especially if it’s been stored in a cool, dry place. Light also increases oxidation, so if you have the bag open for a long time, you wouldn’t have much vitamin A left in that feed.” VITAMIN A TOXICITY
A healthy horse will never get too much vitamin A eating natural feeds like forages (grasses and hay). Te only time a horse might sufer toxicity is when people feed too much vitamin A, such as in supplements.
away), and had severe depression. Tey spent most of their time lying down. Tey had internal hemorrhaging, and death was the fnal result.” Most horses would never receive that much vitamin A for that long a time, but most commercial concentrates and many supplements contain vitamin A. If you double these up too much, feeding a lot of concentrates plus various supplements, a horse could end up with toxic levels. Some people also give mares or young horses injections of vitamin A or a vitamin A and E
A healthy horse will never get too much vitamin A eating natural grass and/or hay
“Vitamin E is nearly impossible to overdose, but vitamin A can cause problems with excessive intakes,” said Crandell. “One research study fed horses 100 times the vitamin A requirement, and another group of horses 1,000 times the dietary requirement. Growing horses receiving 100 times the requirement appeared clinically normal, but had slower growth and lower weight, and a dull hair coat. It did afect them, but not as severely as the horses receiving 1,000 times the recommended dose.” It took time for these afects to show up. Te researchers fed these doses for 15 weeks. “After that length of time, the horses receiving 1,000 times their requirement had rough hair coat, poor muscle tone, and depression. After 20 weeks of that high dose, the horses were losing hair (coming of in clumps) and skin (some areas sloughing
combination to try to prevent defciencies. “A one-time injection is usually fne,” Crandell said. “It’s when the daily dietary intake is excessive that you’d tend to see problems, over time. “What you might notice frst is that the young horse isn’t growing or gaining weight as you’d expect, and has a rough hair coat. A young, growing horse may develop orthopedic diseases. Sometimes bones become brittle because they don’t have the proper structure, and cartilage is also afected.” Since excess vitamin A afects bones, there is not proper turnover of bone cells. “Where nerves go through bones— such as the spinal cord or where the optic nerve goes through—there is narrowing, which can put pressure on those nerves,” said Crandell. “Pressure on the spinal cord could cause ataxia, and the horse might want to lie down all the time. If there is
pressure on the optic nerve, this could affect vision.” Vision can be impaired by either defciency or excess of vitamin A. One of the common symptoms of vitamin A defciency is night blindness, since vitamin A is crucial for healthy eyes. Tere can also be adverse efects in the eye with vitamin A toxicity. If a horse is fed too many supplements, creating an excess of vitamin A in a horse, you might not see direct signs. “By the time you start seeing signs of toxicity, it’s too late; a lot of damage has already been done,” said Crandell. “High vitamin A levels may also start interfering with other nutrients in the body, such as vitamin E, an important antioxidant. “Perhaps you are feeding a lot of commercial feed fortifed with vitamin A. Te feeding rate for a certain commercial concentrate might be fve to 10 pounds daily, and some racehorses might be getting 20 pounds. Tey might also be getting a vitamin supplement in addition to the feed. If you are feeding 20 pounds of a commercial feed and adding a vitamin supplement, you could easily be overdosing vitamin A. “Te recommended maximum, listed by the National Research Council (NRC), is 16,000 International Units (IU) of vitamin A per kilogram of diet. Te typical average-sized horse is eating about 10 kilograms of food, so this would be about 160,000 IU per day. “Te typical concentrate feed has about 11,000 IU of vitamin A per kilogram. So if you read labels, you can fgure out how much vitamin A you are feeding. If a horse is on green pasture, you never have to worry about defciency because of all the carotene. If the horse has high intake of vitamin A, the enzyme that converts carotene to vitamin A will decrease its activity. So having a horse on green forage while you are feeding high levels of vitamin A will not create toxicity—the green feed won’t make it worse. “In humans, vitamin A toxicity can be more of an issue. People have died after eating polar bear liver, for instance, because it is so high in vitamin A. Keep in mind that symptoms of toxicity are similar to symptoms of defciency. If you suspect a vitamin A problem, check the diet.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Feb. 21, 2021.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
