WALL STREET FAVORS SPORTS WAGERING OVER XEROX

s March Madness takes hold across the country, Wall Street is betting on sports wagering as a solid bet. Te S & P 500 Index bumped Xerox in late March in favor of gaming companies in the new economy. Since the Supreme Court ruling in 2018 that overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protections Act, more than two dozen states have legalized sports wagering, and it appears California will soon join the list, possibly becoming the largest market in the country. A recent report by the Investment Firm Morningstar estimates that the legal sports betting market will reach $81 billion by 2024. Te California Tribal Initiative Coalition has submitted more than 1.4 million raw signatures for verifcation. Te campaign has raised more than $12 million to date, with major funding coming from the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians, Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, Fed-

erated Indians of Graton Rancheria, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, and Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Te counties have until April 22 to verify signatures, and it appears almost certain they will meet the 997,139 necessary to qualify. Tis is great news! Te ballot measure would legalize sports betting at tribal gaming casinos and licensed racetracks. Te measure does not include card rooms. Te brick-and-mortar piece is very important to California racing and tribes. Bets must be placed in person and should drive trafc to tracks and tribal casinos. Tis not only protects our jobs, keeping them here in California, but it will help bring new gamblers to our facilities. Tis also protects our exclusivity of online pari-mutuel wagering. In addition, the initiative would allow tribes to operate roulette and dice games on tribal lands, subject to approval of new compacts. Te legislature has fercely debated sports wagering and online pok-

er for more than a decade, as well as the ongoing fght between card rooms and tribes over legal games and card room operations. Each year they have failed to get the required votes needed for passage, despite intense eforts to open this new market. So far, this legislative session shows no appetite for the issue, and we remain hopeful that the tribal efort will not face a competing measure when it presumably goes before the voters in 2022. Although it will likely face opposition from card rooms and other groups, the smart money will be on the tribes to get this across the line. Legalizing sports wagering in California and bringing it out of the shadows is long overdue. It will provide a regulated legal framework to protect California consumers and help prevent problem gamblers from being further harmed. It will provide new revenue for the state, protect our land-based jobs, and introduce new Californians to the beauty and excitement of horse racing.

CAL-BRED EXCELS AT MARATHONS California-bred Ward ’n Jerry, a homebred for Larry and Marianne Williams, won two consecutive turf marathon races in Santa Anita’s Te Tin Man Turf Starter Distance Series. Te series is named for Te Tin Man, a popular marathoner in California who earned more than $3 million and campaigned through age 9. Ward ’n Jerry is emulating Te Tin Man, in that he is still competing well at age 8. Mike Puype trains the gelded son of Lucky Pulpit—Tamarack Bay, by Dehere. Following a fourth in the $201,500 Unusual Heat Turf Classic Stakes Presented by City National Bank, Ward ’n Jerry competed in the second and third leg of the distance series, both times under jockey Flavien Prat. In the second leg Feb. 20 at 11⁄4 miles, Ward ’n Jerry came from fourth to score by a head in 1:59.66 as the 4-5 favorite. Second choice to Red King in the third leg March 20 at 11⁄2 miles, Ward ’n Jerry raced in ffth early and defeated Lure Him In by a half-length in 2:27.47, with Red King third. “Tis horse is just so honest, and he loves these longer distances,” said Puype. “He knows where the wire is, and this series is perfect for him.” Ward ’n Jerry was winning his eighth of 27 races and brought his lifetime earnings to $468,259. He won the 2020 San Luis Rey Stakes (G3T). Te series, which is scheduled to culminate in a 13⁄4-mile race April 24, is for 4-year-olds and up that have started for a claiming price of $40,000 or less in 2019-2021.

FIVE CAL-BREDS SELL AT OBS Five California-breds sold at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales’ March 2-year-olds in training auction in Florida, led by an Astern colt bringing $95,000. Linda Madsen bred the Astern colt, who is out of the Tiznow mare Tisbury. Lucan Bloodstock consigned the youngster, and Cary Bloodstock bought him as agent for Intrepid Thoroughbreds. A flly by frst-year stallion Stanford and bred by Magee-Wolfson sold for $85,000. Named Drizella, she is out of the Royal Applause mare Tinderella. William Peeples purchased her from the consignment of Havens Bloodstock. Peeples also bought the flly Grazen Touch (Grazen—Lavender Touch, by Touch Gold) for $80,000. Havens consigned Grazen Touch, and Gilman Racing bred her. A Cal-bred colt by Munnings sold for $65,000. Bred by Terry Lovingier, he is out of the War Front mare Mobilize. Michael Maker purchased the Munnings colt from Wavertree Stables. Maker also bought a Champ Pegasus colt for $45,000. Cicero Farms bred the colt out of the Vale of York mare Little Rooster. Del Mar’s overnight purses, stakes, and “Ship & Win” program will see increases for the 2021 summer race meeting, which starts July 17. Track management is also hopeful that fans will be able to attend the meeting. Overnight purses will rise more than 30% over the 2019 season, during which the track operated an uninterrupted racing schedule. Del Mar management announced an expected average of more than $700,000 a day in purses during the summer meet. Purses set to increase at Del Mar summer meet Te stakes program will increase 30% compared to its 2020 racing season, when Del Mar presented 32 major stakes worth $5,175,000. Te 2021 schedule adds two stakes, with total purses of $6,750,000. Many individual stakes purses will increase, including the TVG Pacifc Classic (G1) from $500,000 to $750,000. Del Mar will continue to ofer a strong California-bred program through the Golden State Series. Eight stakes are on the docket, with purses totaling $1,050,000. Te “Ship & Win” program, for horses entering from outside California, is doubling its participation fee for owners (from $2,000 to $4,000) and its purse bonus from 20% to 40% for all eligible races. Te purse bonus will be upped to 50% for dirt races in the “Ship & Win” program. Te 2021 purse enhancements are due in part to a partnership with the Toroughbred Owners of California, FanDuel Group’s TVG horse racing television network and advanced-deposit wagering platform, and Te Stronach Group’s 1/ST Racing. Te multi-party agreement, announced earlier this year, is expected to inject up to $15 million into California Toroughbred purses and programs over the next two years. In addition, Del Mar’s total handle for its 2020 racing seasons was well above initial projections—despite fans’ not being allowed onsite because of the pandemic—adding funding to the purse increases. Del Mar is working on establishing health protocols and attendance limits that will safely accommodate racing fans. Ticket sales have been pushed back from the traditional May date until these plans are in place.

Deshawn Parker, who in 2010 became the frst African American rider since 1895 to lead all other American jockeys in races won, has been selected by a vote of jockeys nationwide as the winner of the 2021 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. Presented annually by Santa Anita since 1950, the Woolf Award can only be won once. It is named for the legendary late Hall of Fame jockey who rode regularly in Southern California and in 1938 piloted Seabiscuit to victory over Triple Crown winner War Admiral in a match race at Pimlico. Parker Te award recognizes those riders whose careers and personal character garner esteem for the individual and the sport of Toroughbred racing. A Cincinnati native, Parker, 50, was a perennial leading rider at Mountaineer Park in West Virginia for more than 20 years. Trough March 21, he had 5,843 career wins, and he has been the leading rider at Indiana Grand and Sam Houston Race Park. He led all other riders in the U.S. in 2010 with 377 wins and returned in 2011 to lead again with 400 wins. Te 2021 Woolf Award win comes on the heels of the passing of Parker’s mentor and father, Daryl Parker. A longtime highly respected Ohio racing steward, Parker passed away from cancer in Cincinnati March 4. “My idol, my best friend and a great father!” Parker tweeted March 5. “He meant so much to my life and my career. I can only hope to be as great as he was.”

Mrs. Jerry Amerman bred Oscar Nominated, a son of Kitten’s Joy—Devine Actress, by Theatrical. The 8-year-old horse is a full brother to Oscar Performance, whose multiple grade I wins include the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T). Oscar Nominated will be the only son of Kitten’s Joy Oscar Nominated standing in California. Oscar Nominated won six of 30 races for earnings of $1,502,639. His biggest wins include the Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral Stakes (G3) at Turfway Park, the Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup (G3T) at Kentucky Downs, and the W.L. McKnight Stakes (G3T) at Gulfstream Park. He also placed in the Pattison Canadian International Stakes (G1T) at Woodbine.

Santa Anita Appointments Charlene Favata Markel Charlene Favata Markel, known to her many friends as Charlie and a former longtime staff member of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association, died March 14. She was 74. Though she was already an established graphic artist in 1978, Markel felt she had obtained her dream job when the CTBA hired her for work on this magazine, then known as The Thoroughbred of California. Few people ever enjoyed the races as much as Markel did, and so to prepare material for the monthly breeders magazine was an ideal situation. She also spent many hours attending the races at Santa Anita and especially liked going to California Cup. Markel had a hand in all of the graphic design and was especially adept at preparing ads for clients. Not only was she creative, but she was also quick and could meet the tightest deadlines. Markel, along with all of the magazine’s other graphic artists, also worked on CTBA projects, from brochures to Cal-bred championship ballots. During her tenure Markel was at the forefront of technological change. She adapted from X-Acto knives and waxed galleys to a completely computerized and digitized system of producing a publication. After 36 years with the CTBA, Markel retired in 2014. Survivors include Markel’s husband, Donn.

Jason Wilson has been appointed chief operating officer of 1/ST Content, the consumer-facing brand of Te Stronach Group, and Rob D’Amico has been hired as the company’s frst chief security officer. Te Stronach Group operates Santa Anita, Golden Gate Fields, and many other racetracks across the country. Wilson will work directly with Aidan Butler, president of 1/ST Content, to develop and align the company’s North American and international content businesses. Wilson previously served as president and chief operating officer for Equibase, vice president of business development for Te Jockey Club, and president of TJC Media Ventures. D’Amico, a former FBI supervisory agent, will provide an increased layer of protection and security oversight on the backstretch, for guests at 1/ST venues and online, for employees, and for the company’s IT systems. In other Santa Anita news, the racetrack was scheduled to reopen to fans at a limited capacity beginning April 2, in keeping with California’s guidelines for large sporting event venues. Fans wishing to attend must purchase tickets, which includes an assigned seat, in advance of arrival at Santa Anita. A Santa Anita press release said: “In accordance with state requirements for reopening, walk-up or general admission tickets cannot be sold, though that could change as the COVID-19 numbers improve in Los Angeles County.”

Lila Lanning, who with her husband, Curt, was a major owner and breeder in California, died March 15 in Mesa, Ariz. She was 82. The Lannings succeeded on the racetrack with a combination of homebreds and purchases at public auction. Ed Moger trained many of their stakes winners, including $657,027-earner Qiaona, $344,313-earner Gentle Charmer, $429,437-earner Phaenna, and $289,354-earner Zoning In, all California-breds. Their leading homebred earner is Tribal Storm, a 2014 Cal-bred gelded son of Papa Clem—Tribal Feathers, by Tribal Rule. Claimed away for $62,500 in 2018, Tribal Storm for the Lannings and with Moger training won the 2017 Harris Farms Stakes and 2018 Lost in the Fog Stakes and fnished third in the 2017 El Camino Real Derby (G3). The Lannings purchased Qiaona for only $4,500 at the 2011 Barretts October sale, and she went on to win the 2013 California Breeders Champion Stakes and California Distaff Handicap for them. Gentle Charmer cost them $17,000 at the 2003 Barretts preferred yearling sale and won the 2007 California Cup Distaff Handicap.

Frequent buyers at the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Northern California yearling sale, the Lannings purchased Inspiration Within there for $11,000 in 2005 and Legal Separation at the same sale in 2008 for $2,000. Both became stakes-placed and earned six fgures. “The nature of the horse business is that you survive long enough to get a really good horse, or you simply have to be lucky,” Lila told this magazine in 2017. “You can pay $1 million for a yearling and only earn $12,500 with them. There’s no magic system. Now, if you could look into the horse’s heart to see if they have the heart to run, well, that would make a big difference.” Lila Lanning was born in San Diego in 1939 and as a young child moved with her family to California’s Bay Area. She graduated high school from Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, Calif., and became a secretary at the school. She was chosen as Ms. National

The California-bred frst annexed the April 9 Arcadia Stakes (G2T) at a mile on the turf at Santa Anita and then added the April 24 Inglewood Handicap (G3T) at 11⁄16 miles on the turf at Hollywood Park. Martin Garcia rode the 6-year-old gelding in both races for trainer Neil Drysdale. Liberian Freighter was reluctant to step onto the turf course before the Arcadia, but he performed well in the race, stopping the timer in 1:34.41. He completed the Inglewood distance in 1:39.70. She frequently gave back to the community and supported the Humane Society and the Wounded Warrior Project. Lanning, who had a son, Chris Bortolin, from her frst marriage, married Curt in 1980 and became a stepmother to Curt’s three children. She was an avid seamstress and often made holiday outfts for her grandchildren. The Lannings, who met at a bowling alley while playing in different leagues, owned hundreds of horses throughout their 40-year marriage. The Thoroughbred Owners of California honored them with the Chairman’s Award in 2002. Lanning was preceded in death by her father, Charles Flick; her mother, Geneva Bradley; son Chris Bortolin; and stepson Craig Lanning. In addition to her husband, her survivors include her sister, Anita Bardsley; her stepchildren, Connie Holdampf and Paul Lanning; three grandchildren; and fve great-grandchildren. The 4-year-old colt and jockey Rudy Rosales raced in ffth early and shot to the front in the fnal furlong to beat fellow Cal-bred King of Cricket by 31⁄2 lengths. Rullah Fols made it a Cal-bred trifecta by fnishing third. Jerry Fanning trained Reb’s Policy and owned him with Joe Annotti and Martin Nadel. Charles Gutentag and Phillip Stein bred Reb’s Policy, a son of New Policy—Yenoh Reb, by Berseem. Reb’s Policy had previously tied Hollywood Park’s 51⁄2-furlong track record on the dirt of 1:022⁄5.

here is nothing unusual about a flly or mare being named California’s Horse of the Year— Evening Jewel, Nashoba’s Key, and Moscow Burning are just some of the recent winners. But there is something unusual—one might even say, Mucho Unusual—about a female’s winning the honor four years running. Sircat Sally did it in 2017, followed by Spiced Perfection in 2018 and 2019. Mucho Unusual made it four in 2020, adding to her tally as the 2019 champion 3-year-old female with a sweep of the 2020 champion older female and champion turf horse titles. Te bay daughter of Mucho Macho Man—Not Unusual, by Unusual Heat, runs for breeder George Krikorian. “She’s one of my favorites,” Krikorian said. “She’s done so much for us. It’s always special when you can breed, race the horse you bred, and have her become a stakes horse.” Krikorian went to $67,000 to buy dam Not Unusual as a yearling at Barretts in 2007. Te daughter of Unusual Heat went on to be a three-time winner, but has been even more successful as a broodmare. Her frst foal, Unusually Big, won 11 of 57 starts with 24 top-three eforts. grade 3 winner at Keeneland in 2017 and has been a popular competitor in Southern California since 2016. Big Buzz, her 2015 foal, was also a multiple winner, followed by Mucho Unusual. Bloodstock agent Gayle Van Leer, who works closely with Krikorian, recalled of Mucho Unusual, “When Mr. Krikorian had all his mares out at EA Ranches, from the resulting foals there was one in the pasture that stood out. Tat was her.” Te flly was so highly regarded that trainer Tim Yakteen debuted her in stakes company at Del Mar. Mucho Unusual fnished second in the $100,000 Generous Portion Stakes before breaking her maiden next out. She subsequently ran second in the Golden

State Juvenile Fillies that November. As a sophomore, Mucho Unusual won the $201,755 San Clemente Stakes (G2T) at Del Mar in addition to the $200,351 California Cup Oaks at Santa Anita Park. She fnished her 2019 season by running second in the American Oaks (G1T), missing the winner’s share of the $301,053 prize by just a half-length. Last year began as 2019 ended, with Mucho Unusual placing in graded company. She ran third in the $202,000 Buena Vista Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita Feb. 22, missing the win by just a length. Yakteen gave her three months of before sending her nine furlongs in the $302,500 Gamely Stakes (G1T). Mucho Unusual fnished third, beaten 11⁄4 lengths. By this time she had placed in grade 1 company twice. A trip to Keeneland for the $350,000 Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes (G1T) went awry as Mucho Unusual fnished last behind some of the best grass mares of recent times, including winner Rushing Fall. Tat was in July, but she returned to Del Mar in August for the $122,500 Solana Beach Stakes against fellow California-breds. Mucho Unusual was hammered down as a heavy favorite but missed the win by a half-length, fnishing third. With all of her 2020 starts to date coming over nine furlongs or less, it was time to try a route again. Mucho Unusual stretched out for the frst time since the American Oaks to go 10 panels in the $300,500 Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1T), a “Win & You’re In” event for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T). She was the 3-1 third choice in a feld of six, and when the gates opened, Mucho Unusual bounded to the lead. Under jockey Juan Hernandez, she rattled of fractions of :24.29, :49.52, and 1:14.07. As the feld swung into the lane, only Maxim Rate was gaining, as the likes of Lady Prancealot and Tonahutu were backing up. Mucho Unusual cruised to the wire in 2:00.19, winning by 11⁄4 lengths. It was the grade 1 win Mucho Unusual had been seeking for a year. She was the

frst Cal-bred to win the race since Tiz Flirtatious in 2013, who followed Nashoba’s Key in 2007. “Tis mare is unbelievable,” said Yakteen in a post-race interview. “Her mother, Not Unusual, is a great producer. It was great to get a grade I win on the page for her. It’s very gratifying. She’s been such a hard-knocking flly. She’s been knocking on the door with grade Is, so to pull this out is amazing.” Mucho Unusual did not run well at the Breeders’ Cup, but she wasn’t done with 2020 yet. Just fve days before she ofcially turned 5, the flly went to the post in the $101,500 Robert J. Frankel Stakes (G3T) as the second choice under jockey John

Velazquez. Tis time she sat of the pace before pouncing and holding of Never Be Enough to win. Tat race came over nine furlongs on the Santa Anita turf. Te victory elevated her stats on the season to two wins and three thirds in seven starts for earnings of $317,333. Since the new year began, Mucho Unusual has also added the $98,000 Megahertz Stakes (G3T) to her tally. She is at $862,715 in career earnings. “I was really surprised she was Horse of the Year,” Krikorian said. Runner-up Warren’s Showtime is a multiple stakes winner with a grade 1 placing, and Sneaking Out won two graded stakes in a truncated season, amongst other excellent California performers in 2020. “Tat made it really special,” said Krikorian. “Her dam is a remarkable mare, with fve winners from fve to race.” Krikorian breeds and races many of his own horses, but does sell some, as well. Mucho Unusual, though, will likely remain with him. “I have no plans to sell her,” he said. “She’s at the top of her game now, so there are no plans to retire. But when she does retire, I will look forward to the foals she produces. She is fantastic.”

George Krikorian bred Big Fish, and Pete and Evelyn Parrella’s Legacy Ranch own him. Dam Perched cost Krikorian just $11,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November sale, where she sold in foal to Cross Trafc. Tat foal became the winner Trafc Stopper, and the very next one born from Perched was Big Fish. Krikorian also raced Mr. Big, a son of Dynaformer who has become a surprise standout in the California breeding ranks. Te strapping horse has average earnings of more than $80,000 per starter and 67% winners from starters, including the graded winner Big Score. “He’s a cool stallion,” Krikorian said. “And Big Fish is a nice horse. You could see he was talented right away.” Big Fish’s attributes made him the $45,000 sale-topper at the California Toroughbred Breeders Association’s Northern California yearling sale in 2019. Harris Farms consigned him to the sale, and Legacy purchased him there. Big Fish took three tries to break his maiden, though he placed in both of his frst two starts. He won by 11∕4 lengths 22

She has a juvenile full brother to Big Fish named Big Splash, and recently foaled yet another Mr. Big. “We are just so excited about him,” said Gayle Van Leer, who manages Mr. Big. “Look how many high-quality winners he has had. His stats are just rocking.” Big Fish will look to continue the success of the whole team as he continues his 2021 campaign.

Te dark bay colt by Curlin to Mischief—Gator Prowl, by Roar of the Tiger, boasts several stakes winners in his immediate pedigree, and had been working so well that he was sent of as the 3-1 second choice in his debut. But owners J. Kirk and Judy Robison could not have guessed that their homebred would ultimately be named the California-bred co-champion 2-year-old male in a tie with Big Fish. “I’m fairly new in the Cal-bred business,” Kirk Robison said. “I sent a few mares to California four years ago, and he’s from the frst crop that raced out there. To have him become a champion is pretty darn surprising and gratifying.” Good With People’s dam, Gator Prowl, is a stakes winner with fve victories in nine starts. Te Robisons bought her for $15,000 in 2010 at the Keeneland November sale. She went to the stallion Southwestern Heat for her frst cover, producing stakes-placed winner Gator Heat. Following that gelding came winners Southwestern Prowl and Diabolical Gator and three-

time stakes winner Fast Gator. Enter Good With People. A foal of 2018, Good With People is by the royally bred Rancho San Miguel stallion Curlin to Mischief. Te son of Curlin is a half brother to multiple champion Beholder and leading sire Into Mischief, as well as Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) winner Mendelssohn. With pedigree power on both sides, Good With People seems a logical prospect to have a strong career. He won frst out, defeating Big Fish in a maiden sprint on the dirt at Del Mar July 12. Good With People then ran second in the $100,500 Graduation Stakes, missing by just a half-length to Positivity. He rebounded to win the $94,000 I’m Smokin Stakes, scoring despite being bumped at the start. He then tried the grass at

Keeneland in the $150,000 Indian Summer Stakes Presented by Keeneland Select, fnishing fourth. “Any time a horse runs bad, I blame Peter Miller,” Robison joked about the colt’s trainer. “Pete asked what I thought about a turf sprint at Keeneland, and I’m a sportsman so I don’t just want to stay local. It didn’t work out, but it was a good adventure.” Returned to Del Mar, Good With People faced eight rivals in the $151,500 Golden State Juvenile Stakes. Sent of as the favorite under Ricardo Gonzalez, he won by three-quarters of a length over Positivity. Good With People rounded out the season fnishing a blanket ffth in the $100,000 King Glorious Stakes. He was beaten just 11∕4 lengths for the win as six horses were spread out across the track at the fnish. He won three of six starts with a second, earning $203,000. “He’s got speed, and we’ve learned he wants to be a sprinter,” Robison said. “His style is to quickly get to the lead, be nerfed along, and outrun them. You avoid trouble when you have speed. He’s a very fun horse; you’ve got to have these kind to pay for the other ones.” Robison still has dam Gator Prowl, who has a yearling flly by Diabolical and foaled a colt by Marking at the end of February. All fve of her ofspring to race have won. “Tis is the kind of mare you keep,” said Robison, who has eight mares in California. As for Good With People, Robison said, “We will put him in spots where he can show his speed and gut it out to the wire.”

ew things in life are as precious or breathtaking as a newborn foal, and luckily for Linda Templeton, Governor Goteven was so “cute” that she stopped the breeder from getting out of the game. Now the flly has been named California’s champion 2-year-old female for 2020 after a strong season with three straight wins.

Governor Goteven is a dark bay daughter of Lovacres Ranch stallion Govenor Charlie and the Time to Get Even mare Time Linda Goteven. “When she was born, I was at the point of getting out (of racing),” Templeton said. “Times were so tough. But she was so beautiful. I knew I had to hang on to this little flly to see what she could do. Was I ever surprised!” Governor Goteven is a third-generation runner for Templeton, who also campaigned her dam and second dam, Linda’s Bluf. Te latter never won, but Templeton liked that she was by millionaire Pollard’s Vision. Time Linda Goteven also didn’t 26

win, and she produced three straight fllies that didn’t make it to the starting gate before Governor Goteven came along. “Everyone kept saying what a beautiful flly she was, with the longest legs,” Templeton recalled. “I just hoped she would come around. I never knew she would be this good.” In the barn of trainer Lisa Bernard, Governor Goteven won on debut sprinting at Santa Anita May 29, scoring by a neck as an 18-1 surprise. She then took on winners in the $98,000 California Toroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes at Del Mar Aug. 1, and rolled home to win by 31∕2 lengths. Governor Goteven had already exceeded expectations, but it was her victory in Del Mar’s Generous Portion Stakes that

Templeton liked best. “I was so excited I couldn’t even talk,” she said. “It was also nice because I was able to be there. It’s been hard that I can’t take the kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids to see her run.” Pandemic restrictions had slowly been eased to allow owners to see their horses, but without other guests or fans. Governor Goteven ran twice more in 2020, fnishing fourth in the $151,500 Golden State Juvenile Fillies, beaten a head and two noses for the win, and second in the $100,000 Soviet Problem Stakes. Both of those starts came under the tutelage of trainer Walther Solis. In all, Governor Goteven earned $171,000 with three wins in fve starts. Templeton is quick to praise everyone involved with the flly, except herself, saying, “It was the care she got at Lovacres, and the care she gets at the barn from the trainer to the groom and exercise rider. It’s nothing I did, it’s everything they’ve done.” She also gave a nod to jockey Tiago Pereira, who has ridden Governor Goteven in all of her career starts. Te success of Governor Goteven has also stopped any more thoughts of leaving racing. “I have two more that I’ve bought into,” Templeton said. “I don’t care how old I am; I still love it. I fall in love with every horse, and I get so excited when I see them. I’m so attached that I don’t let reason fgure into my decisions.” With Governor Goteven, Templeton never has to regret making the choice to stay.

or the frst time in a decade, a champion California-bred 2-year-old male has repeated as the following year’s champion 3-year-old male. El Tigre Terrible, co-champion 2-year-old male of 2019 and sole winner of the 3-year-old male title in 2020, put himself into stellar company. He is the frst to repeat in those two categories since Caracortado in 2009-10. Te list includes some of the fnest Cal-breds ever: Brother Derek (2005-06), Cavonnier (1995-96), Bertrando (1991-92), Best Pal (1990-91), King Glorious (1988-89), Snow Chief (1985-86), and Fali Time (1983-84). Martin Bach bred El Tigre Terrible, a gelded son of Smiling Tiger—King City Kitty, by Gotham City. He liked the hard-knocking claimer Chanceofalifetime, the second dam, and purchased her for $10,500 at the 2011 Barretts January mixed sale. El Tigre Terrible was foaled in 2017 at Sue Greene’s Woodbridge Farm, where Bach keeps his mares. “I cannot say enough good things about Sue,” said Bach. “She is just one hard-working person.” While he has sold King City Kitty, Bach still has several mares out of Chanceofalifetime, including homebreds She’s So Vain and Recoiling. Bach breeds many of his mares to Smiling Tiger. “I’m thrilled for the family,” said Bach about El Tigre Terrible’s award. “I love Chanceofalifetime, and I love her ofspring. We have fve Smiling Tigers this year.” For Bach, Woodbridge consigned El Tigre Terrible as a yearling to the 2018 Barretts October sale. El Tigre Terrible quickly earned back his purchase price at 2, breaking his maiden in his second start. He became a stakes winner in the 2019 Speakeasy Stakes on the Santa Anita turf and was voted co-champion with Phantom Boss. In the frst start of his 3-year-old season, the $85,875 Desert Code Stakes on turf at Santa Anita June 6, El Tigre Terrible fnished ahead of Phantom Boss. El Tigre Terrible ran second to the Hard Spun flly She’s So Special. When he fnally found racing room in the stretch, El Tigre Terrible came fying and just missed by a half-length. Phantom Boss fnished fourth. Tough his best races had come on the turf, El Tigre Terrible demonstrated his versatility in the $125,500 Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar July 31. A seven-furlong race on the dirt for 3-year-old Cal-breds and California-sired runners, the Real Good Deal attracted a feld of seven, including Phantom Boss. El Tigre Terrible was coming of another rough trip in the Runhappy Oceanside Stakes, and when he broke in ffth, Miller thought he might get into trafc trouble again. Instead, jockey Flavien Prat got El Tigre Terrible clear and they won by 43∕4 lengths in 1:24.28 over Rookie Mistake. “Flavien knew what he was doing, and he was the best horse,” said Miller after the race. El Tigre Terrible earned $100,210 in 2020 and now has total earnings of $220,700. Cosato said that El Tigre Terrible is currently being freshened, so perhaps the gelding can try for third title this year.

enjamin and Sally Warren love to follow their horses and frequently make the drive from their Las Vegas home to Santa Anita or Del Mar. Te pandemic meant they had to watch some of Warren’s Showtime’s championship season on television, but they did get to the track a few times. Fortunately, Warren’s Showtime began her 3-year-old season before lockdowns began, and the Warrens experienced her 2020 victories in the $202,000 California Cup Oaks and $106,000 China Doll Stakes in person. “We knew she was good, but she kept winning those stakes races,” said Sally Warren. “We were just ecstatic. She proved herself over and over again. It was so fun.” Warren’s Showtime races for Ben and Sally, with Ben listed as the breeder. Te flly is by Clubhouse Ride out of Ben’s champion California-bred runner Warren’s Veneda. Craig Lewis trained both the sire and dam and now conditions Warren’s Showtime.

“Craig is doing a great job with Warren’s Showtime,” said Ben. Warren’s Showtime not only earned the 2020 3-year-old female championship with her 2020 exploits, she ensured a Broodmare of the Year title for her dam (see page 40). Lewis liked Warren’s Showtime right from the start. “She was very athletic, had a very good mind, and really enjoyed training,” he said. “She’s really a neat flly—very smart, very attractive, very correct.” Te Jan. 18 Cal Cup Oaks provided Warren’s Showtime with a dramatic start to her championship season. She came through on the rail with such a rush that it not only carried her to the lead, she scored by 31∕2 lengths.

WARREN’S SHOWTIME

Warren’s Showtime repeated in the March 7 China Doll, powering through on the rail in the stretch and winning by a halflength over 12 rivals. Both of those races were on the turf, but when Warren’s Showtime won another stakes, the $150,500 Melair Stakes June 21 at Santa Anita, she switched surfaces. Even with a troubled trip, she still managed to win by a length. “Although some people think she’s better on grass, I’m not sure,” said Lewis. “I just think she’s a runner. She really tries, and you can’t teach them that.” Lewis pointed out that both Clubhouse Ride and Warren’s Veneda could also run well on both dirt and turf. Warren’s Showtime stepped up to graded company at Del Mar, running good thirds in both the San Clemente Stakes (G2T) and Del Mar Oaks (G1T) on the turf. Later in the year she also placed in the Betty Grable Stakes and Lady of Shamrock Stakes, but in between she became a graded stakes winner in the $101,000 Autumn Miss Stakes (G3T) Oct. 17 at Santa Anita. Tis time Warren’s Showtime made her run from the outside, coming wide from ffth to post a neck victory in a three-horse photo. She gave Lewis the 1,000th win of his career, particularly special since Lewis had trained both of her parents. For Ben, who had thought about retiring from owning horses, Warren’s Showtime has rekindled his interest. erhaps Galilean was always destined to win a California championship title as he has been superb in every step of his life. It started with his sale-topping $600,000 price tag, and has evolved into a brilliant career with stakes wins on both dirt and turf. But to breeder Pam Christopherson, Galilean is still the sweet-dispositioned horse she used to know.

“He was like an old mare from birth on,” she said. “Such a nice horse, a good guy even when he was a little foal. For a stallion, he is so kind.” Christopherson and husband K. Neal went to $35,000 to acquire Galilean’s dam, the El Prado mare Fresia, under their Bar C Racing Stables moniker. Fresia was carrying an Uncle Mo colt at the time; that foal was Galilean. He sold for a solid price of $60,000 as a yearling at Barretts in 2017, then returned to that venue the next spring to bring a bid of $600,000 from West Point Toroughbreds. Te oﬃcial ownership outﬁt is West Point, Denise Barker, William Sandbrook, and the Coolmore connections of John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith. Tat group bought an interest in Galilean in April 2019, after he had won the $100,000 King Glorious Stakes by nine lengths, the $188,000 California Cup Derby in his sophomore bow, and placed in the $750,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park. “He was headed to being a Triple Crown horse,” Christopherson said. At Los Alamitos, Galilean took the June 27 Soi Phet Stakes. Te one-mile, $101,500 race drew the likes of stakes winners Grinning Tiger and Brandothebartender, and multiple graded stakes placed King Abner, but Galilean and jockey Juan Hernandez rolled away to score by four lengths. Just one month later, Galilean tried the turf at Del Mar in the $127,500 California Dreamin’ Stakes. Te 11∕16-mile contest drew 11 runners, but Galilean swooped clear under Flavien Prat to win by a half-length. Galilean had a rough trip when he

ran fifth in the $152,000 Del Mar Mile Handicap (G2T), having been bumped when leaving the gate and again in the stretch. But he rebounded next out in the $100,000 California Flag Handicap. Te 51∕2-furlong turf contest at Santa Anita took place Oct. 11, and Galilean gamely put his head down on the line in victory. Galilean won at three different racetracks, three different distances, and two different surfaces en route to his championship honor. Christopherson is hoping for more of the same sales success with Galilean’s full sister, who is slated to be sold in the Keeneland September yearling sale this fall. Fresia had a Goldencents filly born earlier this year at Harris Farms and will be bred to young stallion Om. “I hope he can stand here one day,” Christopherson said. “Tey don’t have an Uncle Mo standing in California.” Galilean is currently on the farm preparing for a future return to the track. After making such a name for himself and with a sale-topping physical to boot, Galilean will draw eyes wherever he goes.

ashionably Fast is not only a deserving co-champion sprinter, he is versatile enough to be highly considered in multiple divisions and years. In 2019 he was second to Spiced Perfection for sprinter and to Acclimate as older male. For 2020, in addition to his sprint title, he was voted second to Galilean as older male.

No other Cal-bred champion of 2020 has put together as long a winning streak— six—as did Fashionably Fast. And his eight lifetime victories also top all other 2020 champions. Te winning streak began in 2019 and carried over into 2020. Two of the six races came in allowance/optional claiming company before Fashionably Fast put together four stakes victories in a row. John Harris bred Fashionably Fast in the name of his Harris Farms, perennially a leading California breeder. Tus, Fashionably Fast can’t lay claim to Harris’ longest streak by one runner. Harris recalled a horse named Barry Chancy in 1992 who won eight in a row, “albeit he was competing in less-contentious races than 34

Fashionably Fast,” Harris said. Harris purchased Fall Fashion, the dam of Fashionably Fast, because she was in foal to Twirling Candy and is by Forestry. “It’s the same family as some real good horses like Nureyev,” he added. Harris got Fall Fashion for $22,000 at the 2013 Keeneland November sale. To get Fashionably Fast, Harris bred Fall Fashion to Lucky Pulpit in 2014. Tat was the year Lucky Pulpit’s most famous foal, California Chrome, won two-thirds of the Triple Crown. Lucky Pulpit stood his entire career at Harris until his death in 2017. Fashionably Fast races for Harris, Per Antonsen, and John Nicoletti. Antonsen has served as the farm trainer for the Harris Farms horse division since 1981. Nicoletti has owned and bred horses with Harris and several others, including Don Valpredo. Harris, Nicoletti, and Valpredo bred graded winner Compari, racing him

through most of his career, in which he earned $673,724. Dean Pederson trains Fashionably Fast, who broke his maiden at Santa Anita in his third start at 3 in 2018. Tat fall Fashionably Fast finished second in the Harris Farms Stakes at Frenso. Troat surgery kept Fashionably Fast away from the races during the first part of 2019. Tat fall, it was appropriate that he scored his first stakes victory in the Harris Farms Stakes. Te Harris was the third win in Fashionably Fast’s streak. He finished 2019 by winning the Cary Grant Stakes, and then he took his streak into his championship season. To begin 2020, Fashionably Fast edged Lieutenant Dan by a neck in the $150,000 Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint. Valpredo presented the trophy to his good friend Harris. Fashionably Fast returned for the $100,000 Tiznow Stakes March 1. Te race is named for the national Horse of the Year, a Cal-bred raised at Harris Farms. In fact, Antonsen put the early training on Tiznow. In the Tiznow, Fashionably Fast, as the 6-5 favorite, defeated Oliver by a halflength to extend his streak to six. Te streak was broken in the gelding’s next race, but he was stepping up to grade 2 company in the $200,000 Triple Bend Stakes and finished second to multi-millionaire McKenzie. Sixth in the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) to finish the season, Fashionably Fast is already staking a claim to the 2021 championships. He ran third in the Cal Cup Sprint before taking a second Tiznow Stakes Feb. 28.

s a multiple graded stakesplaced and stakes-winning sophomore in 2019 Sneaking Out had already established herself as an elite California-bred filly. But in just five 2020 starts, the daughter of Indian Evening—Maddie’s Odyssey, by Kitten’s Joy, vaulted her way into a championship, tying with Fashionably Fast for sprinter. Owned and bred by Kevin and Kim Nish of KMN Racing, Sneaking Out won the $200,351 Evening Jewel Stakes and ran second in the $200,000 Summertime Oaks (G2) in 2019. She went to the sidelines from August of that year until April 2020 but returned with a flourish. Entered at Oaklawn Park in a six-furlong allowance race on the dirt, Sneaking Out faced a field of 10 rivals. Headed in the lane, she battled back to win by a neck. “I think they were generous calling that a neck,” Kevin said. “It was more like a head.” Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer targeted the $100,000 Winning Colors Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs May 30. Te six-furlong

race came up more like a grade 1 event, with two-time California Horse of the Year Spiced Perfection taking on graded winners Mia Mischief, Break Even, and Bell’s the One. Sneaking Out finished fifth, defeating Spiced Perfection. “She hooked some tough horses there and went too fast early,” Kevin said. “Tat was not your garden variety grade 3.” Los Alamitos was next, with the $201,000 Great Lady M Stakes (G2) on the docket. Sneaking Out was the fourth choice in a seven-horse field that included grade 1-winning millionaire Bellafina. Under jockey Martin Garcia, Sneaking Out took the lead at the top of the stretch of the 61∕2-furlong race, holding off a rallying Bellafina to score her first graded victory. “We were yelling, ‘Hurry, wire!’ ” Kevin recalled. “When you’re a length ahead of

Bellafina with an eighth to go, that’s a nervous spot to be in.” “I appreciated this win more than any other,” Kim said, though Kevin disagreed. “It was the one after,” he said, “not just because we were there, but a graded stake at Del Mar? You can’t beat that!” Sent off as the favorite in the $101,500 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3), Sneaking Out took an early lead and outran a strong field of female sprinters in the 61∕2-furlong race. Under Umberto Rispoli, she won by 33∕4 lengths. Te Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland became the goal, with Sneaking Out shipping to the Lexington, Ky., track for the $200,000 Toroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2). She made a late move to be second in what was ultimately her final race. Te season came to a halt one week before the Breeders’ Cup, when Sneaking Out suffered a career-ending injury in a workout. Now retired, she finished first or second 11 times in 13 starts and earned $531,441 while racing in stakes company nine times. “She’s going to be bred to McKinzie,” Kim said. “She’s ready for her new career as a broodmare.” While they wait for California champion Sneaking Out’s first foal next year, dam Maddie’s Odyssey is also still in the Nish broodmare band. Before Sneaking Out, the mare had produced graded stakes winner Grecian Fire and has since thrown dual stakes heroine Been Studying Her. Maddie’s Odyssey has a yearling filly by Tapit and is in foal to Constitution, with an unnamed 2-year-old Straight Fire colt set to race this year.

alifornia’s Broodmare of the Year honorees have come from around the globe and with a wide range of racing expertise. What matters is the quality of California-bred runners they produce. Warren’s Veneda brings a rare combination to her title as the 2020 California Broodmare of the Year. She follows only Variety Queen as a Cal-bred racing champion who also earned a California Broodmare of the Year title. Variety Queen harkens back to the early years of Cal-bred champions. She was named champion 3-year-old female of 1979 and Broodmare of the Year in 1988, the year after her daughter Variety Baby was named champion Cal-bred 2-year-old flly. Variety Queen also produced Cal-bred Variety Road, a near-millionaire who only missed a Cal-bred title because he ran during the

same time as Snow Chief and Best Pal. It took Warren’s Veneda just fve years to go from a champion runner to a champion producer. Trained by Craig Lewis, she competed for three seasons for owner/breeder Benjamin Warren,

earning $932,112. Warren’s Veneda won three stakes in 2015, including the Santa Margarita Stakes (G1), and that season’s champion older female Calbred title. “She was a really nice mare who had a lot of ability,” said Lewis. “She steadily improved as she went on and could run

on any surface.” Warren called Warren’s Veneda “the best horse we’ve had so far” following her Santa Margarita victory, though her daughter Warren’s Showtime could eventually eclipse her dam. Lewis also trained Clubhouse Ride, a millionaire multiple graded winner who went to stud in California late in the 2015 breeding season. Te trainer has known Warren and Warren’s wife, Sally, for many years. So when it came time for the Warrens to decide which stallion to breed Warren’s Veneda to, they naturally chose Clubhouse Ride. Warren’s Veneda has produced four foals to date, all by Clubhouse Ride. Warren’s Showtime became the mare’s frst stakes winner and frst Cal-bred champion. A listed stakes winner at 2 in 2019, Warren’s Showtime won the Autumn Miss Stakes (G3T) and three other stakes in 2020. She placed in fve others, including the Del Mar Oaks (G1T). Already twice stakes-placed in 2021, Warren’s Showtime has earned $593,431 through early March. She was voted champion 3-year-old Calbred female of 2020. Lewis also trains Warrens Candy Man, a 3-year-old full brother to Warren’s Showtime who has placed multiple times. Te trainer recently got in the 2-year-old full sister, to be named Warren’s Showgirl, according to Sally Warren. “She’s a beautiful flly,” said Lewis. “I hope she’s as good as her sister.” Te Warrens keep their mares at Legacy Ranch, where Clubhouse Ride stands. In February, Warren’s Veneda foaled a full brother to Warren’s Showtime. “He is a show-stopper,” said Sally Warren. Te Warrens were planning to breed Warren’s Veneda back to Clubhouse Ride. After all, with Warren’s Showtime, the frst foal by Clubhouse Ride—Warren’s Veneda, becoming a champion, more could certainly be on the way.

While 2020 will go down as one of the strangest years on record, the 63-year-old Miyadi kept plugging along as usual. Despite many race days lost due to coronavirus restrictions that also left the grandstands closed to the public, the Arcadia resident was able to cobble together 293 starts, totaling nearly $1.5 million in total purse earnings while posting 63 wins. His 22% strike rate marked the 13th year in which he has won with at least 20% of his starters, a benchmark of success in his profession. For his eforts, Miyadi was named the California Toroughbred Breeders Association 2020 Trainer of the Year. “It means a lot, of course,” Miyadi said of the award. “But you are only as good as your last win in this game. Te real credit goes to my assistants, Carlos Ornelas at Golden Gate Fields, Amanda Ropar at Santa Anita, and Antonio Terrazas at Los Alamitos. Tey get all the credit, along with the rest of my help. Wins and awards like this are really a refection of the people around you, and that includes my owners, people like Nick Alexander and Gary Barber.” And, of course, there are the horses. In Miyadi’s case, they are almost entirely bred in California, another reason winning this recognition is special for him. “California-breds make up probably

90% of my barn, maybe more—that’s how important they are. Tat’s especially true competing in Southern California.” Miyadi noted that there are so many races locally with strong purses that specifcally are written for state-breds. His best in 2020 was Lieutenant Dan, a 2016 son of Grazen who has won stakes races on both turf and dirt. Te bay gelding, bred and owned by Alexander, won the Sensational Star Stakes on grass and placed in two other stakes while racing just three times in 2020. Tat followed a 2019 campaign in which he won four times and placed in four other tries from nine starts. A lifetime earner of $426,020, he was named champion Cal-

bred 3-year-old male of 2019. “He’s on the comeback,” Miyadi said of Lieutenant Dan, who went to the sidelines in June. “He was body sore, so we gave him some time of. He’s always been a lanky horse, and we wanted to give him a chance to grow into his body. He looks a lot stronger now.” Miyadi is now in his 34th season as a head trainer after leaving the late Mike Mitchell’s stable to strike out on his own in 1987. His barn currently numbers 45 horses, with about half of those based at Santa Anita and the other half split evenly between Golden Gate and Los Alamitos. During that time, he has amassed a career winning percentage of 20%, with nearly 1,700 winners and career purse earnings approaching $27 million. Mitchell has had more infuence on him than anyone else “without a doubt,” says Miyadi. “He was my best friend until the day he died.” Miyadi said he met Alexander while he was a groom for Mitchell in the 1980s. “It’s almost a family relationship with Nick,” he added. “He’s just one of those loyal guys. He helped me get started. As long as he’s been in racing, he hasn’t used many trainers. I’m lucky enough to be one of them. He’s like Gary Barber in that way. Tey stick with you.”

Brandothebartender might not win often, but he sure knows how to bring home a paycheck. Since winning an allowance race at Santa Anita on the fnal day of 2018, the California-bred had started 18 times and fnished second or third 15 times, 10 in stakes. Tat consistency is not lost on owners Brian Flanagan, Michael Jarvis, Tim Aldrich, and Jerry Weseloh, who quickly credited the horse and the trainer following the Sensational Star. “Please give him all the love,” said Weseloh, pointing to Dollase. Weseloh and Aldrich campaign in the name of Flawless Racing, and Weseloh goes back enough years that Dollase recalls Weseloh’s having horses with the trainer’s father, the late Wally Dollase. Craig Dollase and the owners claimed Brandothebartender at Del Mar Aug. 1, 2018, for $40,000, and three starts later he won the $100,000 California Flag Handicap in course-record time. “We claimed him as a 5-year-old,” said Weseloh. “We won a six-way shake. I

t’s hard to know which reason the owners of Brandothebartender celebrated more in the Santa Anita winner’s circle following the $101,000 Sensational Star Stakes March 21. Everyone loves a win, of course, but this was by an 8-year-old who hadn’t won in more than two years. Perhaps more importantly, pandemic restrictions had loosened enough that all four owners could stand together with their horse and their trainer, Craig Dollase.

think he’s the fans’ horse. So many people love him, and what he’s done as a Calbred—he brings it every single time.” Dollase calls the gelding a throwback. “He won at Los Al at fve furlongs (on dirt),” Dollase said. “He’s competitive at a mile and an eighth, and he wins in eight and two this afternoon.” Te Sensational Star was carded at six furlongs on the turf. Brandothebartender was coming of a third, having lost by just two heads, in the $100,000 Tiznow Stakes at a mile on the dirt Feb. 28. Brandothebartender and Tiznow second Desmond Doss returned in the Sensational Star against fve others. Bettors favored Jetovator, a smart allowance winner at 61⁄2 furlongs on turf Feb. 20. Brandothebartender typically comes fying at the end, tactics that nearly worked in the Tiznow and paid of handsomely in the Sensational Star. Jetovator set a quick early pace of :21.44

for a quarter-mile and :44.67 for a halfmile. Jockey Umberto Rispoli let Brandothebartender race next-to-last, swinging him wide into the stretch. “Obviously, today the key was to be on the outside and give him a clean run, without any trouble,” said Rispoli. Brandothebartender gave Rispoli everything he had. Tat took him to the front, and he scored by 11⁄4 lengths in 1:08.51. Jamming Eddy fnished second, a neck in front of Desmond Doss. John Haagsma and Wesley Ward bred Brandothebartender. A son of Tribal Rule—Frysland, by Stravinsky, Brandothebartender is a half brother to Lost Bus, champion California-bred older female of 2016, also bred by Haagsma and Ward. Dollase and the owners said they would keep running Brandothebartender as long as the gelding tells them he enjoys his job. “He’s 8 years old, but he doesn’t know it,” said Dollase.

Te Cal-bred breed-back rule is designed to bring good broodmares into the state. California breeders can go to Kentucky mixed sales and buy an in-foal mare, knowing that if they bring the mare to California to foal and breed her back to a California stallion, that foal will be eligible for Cal-bred status. Te books of many California stallions have benefted from the rule. William “Jack” Sims purchased the Indian Charlie mare Cashing Tickets for $55,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. She was carrying Leggs Galore at the time and was bred back to California stallion Stormberg. Kaleem Shah raced Bayern, and so he naturally notices when good prospects by the stallion come up for sale. Shah purchased Bella Vita for $400,000 at the 2019 Ocala Breeders’ Sales’ spring 2-yearold sale. Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings bred Bella Vita from the Storm Cat mare Queenie Cat. Bella Vita was foaled at BG Toroughbreds in Hemet, and Queenie Cat was bred back to California 44

After two unplaced eforts at Oaklawn Park, Leggs Galore is undefeated in her native state. Leggs Galore broke her maiden at Del Mar last August and then won twice in allowance optional claiming company, once at Del Mar and once at Santa Anita. In her frst 2021 start, she became a stakes winner, scoring in the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes Presented by John Deere Jan. 16. Bella Vita became a stakes winner in the $101,000 Spring Fever Stakes Feb. 21, having placed in the China Doll and Evening Jewel stakes last year. D’Amato had told Gonzalez that Leggs Galore would rate, but when she broke alertly on top, “there was only one way— just keep on going,” Gonzalez said. Bella Vita stalked in third, but Leggs Galore’s fight to the front would not be denied. Leggs Galore led at every call, defeating Bella Vita by 21⁄4 lengths in 1:08.17. Sadie Bluegrass fnished third. “I gave Ricky the option,” D’Amato said about race tactics. “I just told him to play the break. If they wanted to come get her, she could rate—she’s done it before. But she broke like a rocket and there was no looking back.” D’Amato paid Leggs Galore a high compliment when he said that she reminds him of Enola Gray. D’Amato trained that champion Cal-bred for owner/breeder Nick Alexander. Enola Gray won the 2017 Irish O’Brien.

ashionably Fast keeps winning stakes that harken back to his roots. Bred by John Harris’ Harris Farms, he won the Harris Farms Stakes at Fresno in 2019. For the past two seasons Fashionably Fast has taken the Tiznow Stakes, named for the champion California-bred famously foaled and raised at Harris Farms for breeder Cecilia Straub Rubens. Harris Farms has produced many fne runners, the facility most recently famous for foaling California Chrome. But Fashionably Fast is quickly moving up the ladder, and unlike Tiznow or California Chrome, he is doing it for the home team. Harris bred the 6-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit—Fall Fashion, by Forestry. Fashionably Fast runs for his breeder, Per Antonsen, and John Nicoletti. John Harris and Nicoletti have been friends and partners in horses for years while Antonsen is the longtime trainer at Harris Farms responsible for giving horses their initial lessons. Trainer Dean Pederson and jockey Tiago Pereira point to Fashionably Fast’s competitiveness. “He’s just a very game horse,” said Pederson. “Tis horse has so much heart,” said Pereira. Five faced the starter in the Tiznow, with Fashionably Fast sent away as the 9-10 favorite. He drew the outside and carried top weight of 124 pounds, neither of which made it easy. Going into the frst turn, Fashionably Fast had to race four wide behind the threesome of Desmond Doss, Margot’s Boy, and Surfng Star. “He’s got so much speed, and I didn’t want to take too much hold of him,” Pereira explained. “He relaxed a little down the backside.” Meanwhile, Brandothebartender was lying in wait behind the leaders and would soon enter the fray. Fashionably Fast ranged up to challenge Desmond Doss in the second turn, pulling even with that rival as they turned for home.

Troughout the stretch Fashionably Fast and Desmond Doss looked each other in the eye. Yet Brandothebartender was closing fast, and those three horses put in a ferocious battle, Fashionably Fast between Desmond Doss on the rail and Brandothebartender on the outside. “An absolute thriller in the Tiznow as they come to the wire together as one,” said announcer Frank Mirahmadi. Fashionably Fast called on that gameness and heart to eke out a head victory over Desmond Doss, with another head margin to Brandothebartender. Fashionably Fast stopped the timer in 1:37.14. “Fashionably Fast—all he wants to do is win, and he did it again,” said Mirahmadi. Fashionably Fast was winning the ffth stakes of his career and brought his lifetime earnings to $568,245. “None of these races are easy, but he tries so hard,” said Pereira. “He gave me everything.” Pederson said the wide trip early didn’t worry him because “he’s in the clear and he was on the bridle for Tiago, which was important.” Te trainer feels that the gelding does even better when he’s in a battle than when he’s by himself during the stretch run.

POWERFUL RIDE BRICKYARD RIDE LAYS DOWN A WINNING PATH IN SAN CARLOS BY TRACY GANTZ

Both times bettors sent Tigre Di Slugo of as the favorite and didn’t even make Brickyard Ride their second choice. Yet Brickyard Ride came through victoriously in each race, frst by 31⁄4 lengths over Tigre Di Slugo at six furlongs and then by four lengths at seven furlongs. Eclipse Award winner Storm the Court highlighted the competition in the San Carlos, a race part of a stellar Santa Anita Handicap (G1) card. But no one could overcome the quickness of Brickyard Ride, a homebred for Alfred “Sonny” Pais and trained by Craig Lewis. Lewis had been using 27-year-old jockey Alexis Centeno to work Brickyard Ride, and the rider got along famously with the 4-year-old colt. Once Centeno began piloting Brickyard Ride in races, they were nearly unbeatable, bringing a record of three wins in four starts together into the San Carlos. Tat one loss came after a very rough trip. When the gate opened in the San Carlos, Brickyard Ride shot to the front, essentially ending the race. No rivals came close throughout the seven furlongs, as Brickyard Ride extended 48

hether against California-breds or graded stakes competition, Brickyard Ride and Tigre Di Slugo are proving to be two of the fastest sprinters in the state. After running one-two in the $153,000 Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint Jan. 16, they returned to complete the exacta again in the $202,000 San Carlos Stakes (G2) March 6.

Centeno was winning the frst graded race of his career, “of big signifcance to me,” said the rider. It was signifcant to Pais and Lewis too. Lewis trained Clubhouse Ride, the sire of Brickyard Ride. Pais and Lewis are longtime friends, and when Clubhouse Ride went to stud in California, they quickly made a deal to breed Pais’ Southern Image mare Brickyard Helen to the stallion and for Lewis to train the foal. In fact, since the arrival of Brickyard Ride, Pais has brought Lewis in as a partner on the mare. Brickyard Helen has already produced two Cal-bred winners, Big Barrel by Surf Cat and Scrappy Deville by Lakerville. Pais said that the mare most recently has foaled a

2021 flly by Clubhouse Ride. Owners were allowed into the Santa Anita winner’s circle for stakes presentations on the card, something that led to many jubilant celebrations. Pais attended the races, posed in the winner’s circle, and made sure that in addition to the trophy, he had the saddle towel as a souvenir. Te owner/breeder felt that Brickyard Ride could get the San Carlos distance. “I know if he breaks clean, he’s tough,” said Pais, who lives in Santa Monica. “I wasn’t as concerned about the extra furlong. I just fgured if he gets it his way, he’s such a smooth-running horse that he does it efortlessly. He’s getting better.” Lewis said that Brickyard Ride has natural speed. “He’s learning how to relax,” the trainer said. “He’s maturing. He’s a big, powerful horse. He reached for ground like a horse that could run forever.”
