When trainer Art Sherman, who announced he was retiring at the end of 2021, was inducted into the California Toroughbred Breeders Association Hall of Fame in 2017, he was overcome with emotion at the awards dinner. Te inclusion meant the world to the humble trainer, but he certainly deserved it as one of the top conditioners of California-breds in recent times. Sherman will always be known as the trainer of California Chrome, the multiple champion Cal-bred who has been such a favorite with fans. Sherman skillfully guided the colt to his stellar career, which included winning two-thirds of the Triple Crown and Sherman earnings of $14,752,650, but the trainer also always had time for the fans. Sherman is retiring so that he and Faye, his wife of nearly 62 years, can travel to such places as Yellowstone Park. But he will continue to own a few horses in partnership, including such runners as Chasing Alchemy, a son of California Chrome Sherman owns with several of the sire’s biggest fans. Swaps, the 1955 Kentucky Derby winner and 1956 Horse of the Year, is another champion Cal-bred associated with Sherman. A jockey and exercise rider before becoming a trainer, Sherman worked for Mesh Tenney, the trainer of Swaps, in the 1950s. Te young rider occasionally worked Swaps for Tenney. “I breezed him, and he went a mile in 1:34 one time,” Sherman recalled. “He came back and broke the track record in :33 and change. He was a super horse.” Sherman also trained Cal-bred Ultra Blend, the 2011 champion Cal-bred older female. Ultra Blend earned $1,015,646 and won such races as the 2011 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (G1). Other graded stakes winners Sherman trained include Siren Lure, Haimish Hy, Lang Field, and Lykatill Hil.

The “black-tie optional” dinner and awards ceremony will be held in a chalet adjacent to Santa Anita’s clubhouse beginning at 4 p.m. Pacifc time, with the awards starting at 5 p.m. That will be followed by an After Party in the Chandelier Room. Tickets are available for $425 each, and information can be found on the National Thoroughbred Racing Association website (ntra.com). PRIVMAN HONORED BY NATIONAL MUSEUM OF RACING Longtime California turf writer Jay Privman is one of three selected to the National Museum of Racing’s Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor. The late Walter Haight and Jack Mann were also selected. Privman, the national correspondent for Daily Racing Form, lives in Carlsbad and began his career covering racing while still in college at California State University, Northridge and working part-time for The Los Angeles Daily News. His frst race was memorable—Spectacular Bid’s victory in the Malibu Stakes (G2), the frst of a perfect nine-for-nine sweep by the colt in 1980. An occasional contributor to this magazine during the early part of his career, Privman worked for The Daily News from 1981-91 before becoming West Coast editor for The Racing Times and West Coast correspondent for The New York Times. He was also a correspondent for The Thoroughbred Privman Record and The Thoroughbred Times before joining Daily Racing Form in October 1998. Privman has also served as a television reporter or handicapper for CBS, ESPN, Fox, and NBCSN. He has been a host of “Thoroughbred Los Angeles,” a Saturday morning show on AM830 KLAA from 2003 to the present. An author and six-time winner of the Red Smith Award, he has earned several other awards, including twice winner of the Joe Hirsch Award from the New York Racing Association for the best story about the Belmont Stakes (G1) and six Joe Hirsch Awards for Breeders’ Cup coverage. The Media Roll of Honor was established in 2010 to recognize individuals whose careers have been dedicated to, or substantially involved in, writing about Thoroughbred racing and who have distinguished themselves as journalists. Other forms of media are also now included. PHOTOS BY Z

SANTA ANITA STARTER SERIES Beginning Jan. 17, the Santa Anita Turf Starter Series will offer eight starter allowance races for fllies and mares on turf. It will consist of four sprints and four routes at distances from fve furlongs to 11⁄2 miles. Fillies and mares that have started for a claiming tag of $25,000 or less beginning in 2020 through entry time will be eligible. In addition to regular purse money, points will be awarded on a graduated scale to the frst four fnishers in each race (10, six, three, and one). At the end of the series, separate monetary awards will be given to owners of horses in both the sprint and route components. Owners with the most points in each division will be awarded $5,000, with $3,000 for second and $2,000 for third. “What we’ve done is package both a sprint series and route series as one,” said Chris Merz, Santa Anita’s director of racing and racing secretary. “Although we anticipate that those horses running in sprints will aim for the four short races and that our routers will try to do the same going long, horsemen may opt to mix and match in terms of distances at some point and they’re welcome to do so. “The Tin Man Starter Series, which we’ll again be offering this winter and spring, was well received last season, and we’re hopeful this new series for fllies and mares will also generate a good deal of interest.”

The California Toroughbred Foundation, which is devoted to fostering education in an efort to improve the health of Toroughbred racehorses, applauds the California Horse Racing Board’s continuing education series for trainers. It is part of a new California regulation that requires trainers and assistant trainers to complete a minimum of 12 hours of approved continuing education coursework every 36 months as a condition for licensing. Te CHRB has created webinars on such topics as racehorse neurological conditions, understanding shoulder fractures, and compounded medications as part of this continuing education. Top veterinarians Dr. Sue Stover, Dr. Dionne Benson, and Dr. Barrie Grant are among the experts that have contributed to these webinars. Te CHRB and the California Toroughbred Trainers have been instrumental in furthering this continuing education. Equine Medical Director Dr. Jef Blea, who is also a Foundation trustee, has been impressed with the level of enthusiasm and interest from trainers. “I have received numerous positive comments from trainers on several of these educational webinars, as it often relates to issues they deal with on a daily basis,” Dr. Blea said. “Trainer commitment to safety and welfare is abundantly evident by virtue of the overwhelming participation in the CE presentations.”

Jungle Racing’s Straight Up G wins the King Glorious Stakes at Los Alamitos
STRAIGHT TALKING F BY TRACY GANTZ
ew California-breds not named California Chrome will get as much publicity as Straight Up G did in winning the $102,000 King Glorious Stakes at Los Alamitos Dec. 12. Tat’s because Jim Rome the sports talk-show host owns and bred the colt, and he tweeted the victory to his 1.2 million followers.
“We own the mare, and we own a part of the sire—this is the most personal thing ever,” Rome told TVG in an interview he retweeted. “Mizdirection was the most surreal thing in my life. Shared Belief was one of the greatest things ever. But this is so personal to have a homebred run in a stakes and win like that. It feels incredible.” Rome and his wife, Janet, were in the partnerships that owned national champion Shared Belief and twotime Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) winner Mizdirection. But they bred Straight Up G, a 2019 son of Straight Fire—Gidget Girl, by Sky Mesa in the name of their Jungle Racing. 28
Straight Up G began his career by fnishing fourth in the Oct. 9 maiden race won by Slow Down Andy, who went on to win the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2). Straight Up G broke his maiden in his second start by a whopping 51⁄4 lengths before trying stakes competition in the one-mile King Glorious. “Tat was a big ask,” Rome told TVG. “We brought him back in 21 days. I
didn’t know whether or not he wanted that second turn.” Straight Up G answered that question emphatically. Te second choice to favored Finneus, he went to the front immediately for jockey Ricardo Gonzalez, stayed there throughout, and beat Finneus by 31⁄2 lengths in 1:36.88. Fast Draw Munnings fnished third. “He broke very sharp,” said Gonzalez, “and when we got to the frst turn, he was moving his ears back and forth so I knew it was game over right there. I knew it was going to be a stroll in the park.” Rome was especially complimentary of trainer Richard Baltas, not only in the way Baltas trains the horses but also in the way he takes care of them. “Richie takes good care of the horses,” Rome said. “Richie understands that the horse comes frst. We feel really strongly about this—the horse has to come frst.” Straight Fire ran second in the 2016 Del Mar Futurity (G1) and third in the FrontRunner Stakes (G1) for the Romes and partners. Te stallion stands at Legacy Ranch, and Straight Up G is from his frst crop. Also a Jungle Racing homebred, Gidget Girl didn’t race, but the Romes also bred and race her 2017 foal, a Kentucky-bred flly by Fast Anna named Gidgetta, who has earned $154,309. Te future for Straight Up G looks promising, as does the chance of his getting even more publicity from his very enthusiastic owner.

CAL-BRED PRIDE PROFESSORS’ PRIDE SOLVES SOVIET PROBLEM
BY TRACY GANTZ

Eddie Truman trains Professors’ Pride for Larry and Carolyn Samovar’s Academic Farms. Bloodstock agent Gayle Van Leer purchased the 2019 daughter of Bayern—Last Resort, by Twirling Candy, for $60,000 at the sale from breeder and consignor Glen Hill Farm. Te group hadn’t found the right Calbred in their price range at that year’s Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale. Van Leer headed to the Kentucky sale, and she recalled that the catalog had only fve Calbreds. She quickly zeroed in on Professors’ Pride as the best of the bunch. “She was just very, very athletic, a super mover, and a smooth flly,” said Van Leer. “She’s bred by Glen Hill Farm, and she’s got family behind her.” Bayern won the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita and is also the sire of Cal-bred stakes winners Bella Vita and Leggs Galore. Professors’ Pride is the second foal of Glen Hill homebred Last Resort, who is out of Argentine group winner Minallon. Truman unveiled Professors’ Pride at Del Mar Nov. 14 in a six-furlong Cal-bred maiden race. Te second choice at 8-5, she 30

She would come back and not blow out a match. I wanted to run her two turns the frst time, but there wasn’t a race, so I had to sprint her.” Te Soviet Problem at a mile was ideal as the second start for Professors’ Pride, though the competition wasn’t easy. Te race attracted two-time stakes winner At the Spa and stakes-placed Big Novel, Madiha, and Munny Penny.
Professors’ Pride went of as a narrow favorite over Big Novel and went to the front early for jockey Juan Hernandez. “She broke sharp and was very comfortable on the lead,” Hernandez said. Tough pressured from both the outside by At the Spa and from the inside from Madiha, Professors’ Pride never relinquished the lead and won easily. She defeated Big Novel by three lengths, stopping the clock in 1:36.94. Madiha fnished third. “She changed leads at the quarter pole and was waiting for company,” said Hernandez. “She was very professional.” Added Truman, “Tat’s what we were hoping for.”

Barocio’s Mia Familia Racing Stable claimed California-bred Principe Carlo for $20,000 at Santa Anita Oct. 9, 2020. He then rested him for a year. “We gave him some time of, and that’s all that he needed,” Barocio said. After coming back to fnish second in an October 30 allowance optional claimer, Principe Carlo repaid Barocio with a victory in the Nov. 21 Cary Grant, the trainer’s “frst stakes win anywhere.” Bettors made Principe Carlo the longest shot, at 18-1, of the seven-horse feld in the seven-furlong Grant. Tey favored Positivity, who was coming of a game neck victory in an allowance optional claimer at Santa Anita Oct. 16. Positivity also had some back class, having won the 2020 Graduation Stakes at Del Mar. None Above the Law went of as the second choice. He had won four stakes in 2021, but only one on the dirt. Te feld also included Fashionably Fast, a multiple stakes winner coming of a victory in the Oct. 9 Harris Farms Stakes at Fresno. Colt Fiction and Positivity battled down the stretch, and Principe Carlo ranged up to join them. Te photo was narrow among all three, with Barocio’s runner winning by a nose in 1:22.33. Positive edged Colt Fiction for second by a neck. “Te horse has a heart of gold, and it has been a team efort,” said an elated Barocio. “Tis means a lot. All I needed was a chance, and people here (at Del Mar) and at Santa Anita have been very good in giving it to me.” Richard Barton Enterprises bred Principe Carlo, a 2016 son of Coil— Princess Ezra, by Rahy. If you’re a Californian, how do you think you would react if your homebred colt—whom you frst saw all damp and spindly legged on the morning he was born—captured the Santa Anita Derby (G1) by daylight in the midst of a six-race win streak, then successfully mastered a new racing surface seven months later to win the venerable Hollywood Derby (G1) on turf? What if your color-bearer managed to retire as the highest-earning racehorse ever to compete in North America, with earnings of more than $14.7 million? Five years ago this month California Chrome ended his record-breaking career to become a breeding stallion. Tis timespan means that he is now eligible for consideration in the “contemporary” category by voters representing the Racing Hall of Fame, the highest honor for any Toroughbred in North America. “I wanted to do something meaningful to mark the fve-year anniversary of Chrome’s retirement,” Martin said. “At the same time, I wanted to state my case on why I believe this horse has the credentials to be a frst-ballot Hall of Famer. His talent and charisma allowed him to accomplish things no other horse in history has and, on a personal note, he took me and my family on an incredible worldwide journey. He deserves the recognition.” On an even more personal level, the process of writing this book over the past several months and reliving the unique experience of campaigning America’s favorite racehorse served as a sort of catharsis for Martin, whose wife of 35 years, Denise, passed away unexpectedly last June. Te book is dedicated in her honor. “Denise and I started tossing around the idea of putting our experiences with California Chrome down on paper a few years ago,” Martin explained. “We wanted to record history, not only for the Martin family, but for the broader audience of horse racing fans as well. “Not only was Denise my wife, my business partner, and my traveling companion, she was the only other person who was there every step of the way with Chrome. And I do mean every step. We watched him running laps around his dam in a foaling stall at Harris Farms shortly after he was born in 2011, and we were planning a trip to visit him in Japan when the COVID-19 pandemic brought worldwide travel to a screeching halt in early 2020. “She lived through every high and every low right alongside me, so I felt it was my responsibility to fulfll our original idea to present ‘Our Story’ to the public, and to set the record straight when it came to chronicling the history

ver the years, Academic Farms has had a parade of horses with a common naming theme: Lucky Student, Teachers Big Dream, and Wise Student. Perhaps the best of them was California-bred Easy Grader, a fourtime winner on the Southern California circuit who earned $175,733. Enter Professors’ Pride, who runs for the fnal remaining member of Academic Farms: Larry Samovar. Te unbeaten Cal-bred daughter of Bayern—Last Resort, by Twirling Candy, recently won the $101,500 Soviet Problem Stakes at Los Alamitos, sparking joy in the hearts

Academic Farms with a common goal. “One was a pediatrician, one was a professor of journalism, and I was a professor in intercultural communication,” Larry said. “We each put in $1,000 and bought a horse from John and Betty Mabee at Golden Eagle Farm. We didn’t have any luck.” Horses got hurt; horses ran unsuccessfully. “We went through a lot of diferent horses,” Samovar said. “We claimed, bought in England. We had no luck at all. “We decided we weren’t claiming for enough money. We looked at a horse that had won her frst race and was about to run in her second. We went from $1,000 each to claiming for $50,000.” Te horse in question, Corissa’s Birthday, scored to remain undefeated, winning at Del Mar on Aug. 22, 2001. “We were jumping up and down excited,” Samovar said. But Samovar’s trainer and dear friend Eddie Truman was shaking his head, watching the track. “She was being loaded in an ambulance, and in those days if you claimed a horse, you claimed the horse,” Samovar said. Samovar had the Cal-bred Half Term flly shipped to his farm in Ramona. A local vet fashioned a crutch for the injured leg, and Corissa’s Birthday survived to become an exceptional broodmare. She was responsible for seven winners from 10 foals to race, including Lucky

“Gayle got us our very frst horse,” Larry recalled. “And I love running in Cal-bred races. So, I told her to try to fnd me a Cal-bred not located in California.” Van Leer looked through more than 1,000 horses before settling on a quirky bay flly by Bayern. Professors’ Pride, bred by Glen Hill Farm, required a bid of $60,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale. “Te very frst bid was nearly all I was going to spend,” Larry said. “But Gayle said this is a very good horse.” Tey sent their new flly to EA Ranches, where the trouble began. “Tey alerted us that she’s a pain in

Student, by Game Plan, who won 10 of 47 starts with 24 top-three eforts and earnings of $260,733, and Our Road Scholar, by Mud Route, who only won six of her 43 starts but ran second 10 times and third eight times for earnings of $203,124. As the other Academic Farms partners aged and ultimately passed away, Samovar found himself the owner of nine horses. But when Corissa’s Birthday was retired from breeding and the racehorses had gone on to other careers, Samovar was left without any. Along with Carolyn, who was a history teacher at San Diego State University as well as the Academic Farms bookkeeper, Samovar approached bloodstock agent and longtime friend Gayle Van Leer for help.

the butt,” Samovar said of Professors’ Pride. “She’s a lot of trouble, she’s aloof. We sent her to Eddie Truman. He says she’s too immature and sends her back to the farm. Tey work on her a few months, and now she’s ready to race.” Professors’ Pride debuted at Del Mar Nov. 14, going of as the second choice in a feld of seven. She won by a length.
“Juan Hernandez won sitting on her like he could have been writing a letter,” Samovar said. Tough the ofers started to trickle in on the exciting flly, Samovar turned them all down, explaining, “I’m too old and I’ve waited too long.” Professors’ Pride backed up that faith Dec.10 in the Soviet Problem over a mile on the dirt. She defeated the well-regarded Big Novel and six other rivals, scoring by three lengths in 1:36.94. “She won with ease,” Samovar said. “Now she gets to run on Cal Cup day in a $200,000 race (the Leigh Ann Howard California Cup Oaks).” After the Soviet Problem, Truman said that the Samovars “have been clients of mine for 40 years and friends and have kept me alive during the down times. It is so great to win for people like that who love the business so much and stuck with me through thick and thin.” As talented as she is, Professors’ Pride isn’t the gentle, cuddly horse they had hoped she would be. “It’s been sad that she’s so aloof,” Larry said. “She’s not interested in anybody; she looks of into space. In the mornings she’s not the easiest thing to deal with, but she’s beautiful. Gigantic. Gayle did a wonderful job picking her.” Professors’ Pride has earned $102,000 with her two victories in two starts. As the Samovars have gotten older, breeding has been something the couple has let slide. Teir three paddocks at their Ramona property are empty, as Corissa’s Birthday is living out her days at EA Ranches and other retired horses have passed away. “We weren’t ready to stop in racing, but wanted to stop breeding,” Larry said. “In this game you mainly have to be lucky, or God has to say to you, ‘You’ve been at this long enough. It’s time to get you another good horse.’ ” With Professors’ Pride, the Samovars are headed to the front of the class.

C-SECTION SURGERY IN MARES HAVE A PLAN IN PLACE FOR THE UNEXPECTED

ometimes it is impossible for a mare to deliver her foal, and it must be removed surgically. Dr. Bonnie Barr with Rood & Riddle in Lexington, Ky., says there are several reasons surgical delivery might be necessary.

“Tere is a diference between an emergency C-section and an elective C-section,” Barr said. “Te emergency C-section is usually subsequent to a dystocia in which the foal cannot be vaginally delivered—usually due to a malposition that cannot be corrected, or a congenital contracture, scoliosis, etc.” Another reason might be that the fetus is dead, with no way to get it out due to an abnormal position.
ELECTIVE C-SECTION
“We don’t do these as often, but sometimes there may be a pre-existing condition in the mare that makes it impossible for her to deliver vaginally or would put the health of the mare at risk to deliver the foal,” said Barr. “We do a handful of those each year, and probably the most common reason would be a mare that had a previous pelvic injury.” “If a mare has a fractured pelvis (a healed fracture that narrows the dimensions of the birth canal), a history of problems foaling, problems with her reproductive tract (such as a cervix incompatible with vaginal delivery), a melanoma mass in the pelvic area, or excessive scarring, she will probably need a C-section,” said Barr. “A mare might have a recto-vaginal tear or cervical injury from a previous foaling that was repaired but left the birth canal too narrow. Te owner might be lucky enough to get her in foal again but doesn’t want to risk re-tearing those tissues during another foaling. “If a mare has had multiple cervical repairs, we’d do an elective C-section. Tere are also a few mares that historically had dead foals or instances of dystocia for some odd reason and the owner wants to do a C-section to hopefully get a live foal.” Mare owners should be aware of pre-existing conditions. Abnormalities might be discovered when their veterinarian does a breeding soundness exam prior to breeding the mare, or they might know about it as part of the history of the mare. In those instances, the mare owner/manager needs to work closely with a veterinarian to monitor readiness of the mare for foaling. Te foal has a much better chance of survival if the mare is in early labor at the time of surgery. You must carefully time the surgery and do it when the mare is ready to foal. Taking the foal too early will generally result in loss of the foal. “To determine when the mare is ready, we monitor milk secretion and monitor the mare for changes indicating readiness,” said Barr. “You want the foal as close to term as possible. Occasionally, here at the clinic, we will let the mare go
ahead and break water and then take her straight to surgery.” said Barr. Te mare will generally have a good prognosis with an elective C-section, but the foal will have a much better prognosis if the mare has either started early labor or is very ready. While foals can have a high rate of survival with elective C-sections, this does not include surgeries in mares that are acutely colicky. Te owner might think the foal should be taken because the mare is near term, but just because the mare, in number of days’ gestation, is near term, the foal might not be ready. Taking the foal even a few days ahead can leave the it compromised in its ability to survive outside the uterus.
You must carefully time the surgery and do it when the mare is ready to foal. Taking the foal too early will generally result in the loss of the foal.” — Dr. Bonnie Barr
EMERGENCY SURGERY
Te most common reason for an emergency C-section is a foal in an abnormal position that cannot be corrected. Te surgery must be done immediately. In a referral practice, mares might have to come from some distance, with poor survival rate for the foals. “We are fortunate here in central Kentucky; people can get their mares to us quickly, so the outcomes are better,” Barr said. When a foal is dead, there are other options, including fetotomy, though in some cases a C-section might be less traumatic to the mare and the health of her cervix. Tis is especially true when it has been several hours since a mare began labor. In these cases a C-section might be performed to save the mare and her future reproductive capabilities. Tere is always risk for vaginal inju-
ries when trying to take a dead foal out through the birth canal. Te less trauma to the mare, the better. If there are vaginal or cervical swelling, lacerations, and bleeding, the surgeon might do a C-section. It’s best to have the mare brought to a veterinary hospital to do the surgery, but sometimes this is impossible. In one case, a mare started to foal and everything was normal except the foal was backward and the veterinarian was unable to deliver it vaginally. She could not be transported to a hospital. Te veterinarian did a fank C-section in the stall instead of the more usual midline incision with the mare on her back. Te mare survived though they lost the foal. It is important to have a plan ahead of time and know what steps you’d take if a mare might need surgery. Where is the closest place you can take her? Do you want your veterinarian to deal with it, or do you want the mare referred to a surgical hospital? In some instances, an owner might choose a fetotomy if the foal is dead by the time the determination is made that the mare cannot deliver normally. A fetotomy involves taking apart the fetus in order to deliver vaginally. Most surgeons prefer to do a C-section. A fetotomy requires a lot of skill and luck to save the mare. Foaling usually doesn’t allow for time to call around and try to decide what to do if there’s a problem. Having the right people available at the right time gives a better chance for having a successful outcome. THE SURGERY
When mares with foaling problems come to a referral hospital, the team goes through a set routine to try to save the foals that are still alive upon arrival and to make sure they also save the mare. When they know a mare is coming, there will be several teams of clinicians ready. “We have the surgeon and that group to take care of the mare, the anesthesia team, and the internal medicine folks who will deal with the foal,” said Barr. “We do that with any dystocia because the foal is going to be compromised.” A quick examination of the mare shows

what shape she’s in, and a technician inserts an IV catheter to give medication and fuids. Meanwhile, the surgeon puts an arm into the birth canal to check if the foal is still alive and its position. Te next step is to anesthetize the mare. If there might be a chance to get the foal out vaginally, this keeps her from straining and the surgeon might try for a short time to manipulate the foal. But after checking the foal, the team might decide very quickly to go immediately to surgery. Te mare is already anesthetized and merely needs to be moved to the operating room. Her belly has already been clipped while the foal was being checked. After surgically scrubbing the belly, an incision is made on the midline, clear to the udder, for more access, and then the uterus is exteriorized. Te gravid horn is pulled up out of the incision as much as possible, and sterile towels placed around it, to absorb any fuid so it won’t leak back into the belly. A leg of the foal is located and pulled up, and an incision made over that leg, through the uterine wall, trying to avoid major blood vessels. After cutting into the uterus, the foal’s legs are grabbed— either the back or front legs, depending on which way the foal is lying—and the foal is pulled out by the legs. 52
If it is alive, the foal team immediately starts working on the foal, putting it on oxygen, etc. Meanwhile, the surgeon cleans up the surgical site and closes the incision in the uterus after carefully checking the uterus for tears. If there was any attempt to resolve dystocia, the uterus should be inspected. “Tey usually lavage the abdomen before closing things up, to make sure everything is clean with no contamination,” said Barr. POST SURGERY
After the surgery, the mare would be cared for about the same as mares that had a normal delivery, though monitored closely. “Some of the immediate problems would include difculty in the recovery stall,” said Barr. “It depends on the situation. If the mare had a dystocia that could not get corrected and a veterinarian had been working on her at the farm for a while before she came to the hospital, she might be very tired after all that stress and might also have some nerve damage.” On rare occasion, a mare might fracture a leg in the recovery stall—and this can happen after surgery or even after a dystocia. Other problems include retained fetal

If the mare has a serious problem, there might be need for a terminal C-section. In this instance the mare would be anesthetized, opened up, and the foal removed, and then the veterinarian would euthanize the mare. There are occasional cases in which the mare has a terminal condition (severe colic or serious disease) and you are just trying to save the foal. In those cases, the foal does not have as good a chance as in situations with an elective C-section. “The mare may be colicking and the owner doesn’t want to do colic surgery or we are in the middle of a colic surgery and realize the mare is not going to survive,” said Dr. Bonnie Barr of Rood & Riddle. “Another thing we encounter is a laminitis case in which the mare might have a little more time to go (before normal foaling), but is in such pain and stress that we decide to do a terminal C-section and hope we might save the foal.” Some people think that if a pregnant mare becomes seriously injured or is dying, they could have a C-section performed and save the foal. If the foal is not ready—if the mare is not actually in labor when you take the foal out—you rarely end up with a live foal. Even if the mare is near term and has a serious colic that requires surgery, if she is not ready to deliver the foal, you are often better off to just do the colic surgery and leave the foal in the mare. To have the best chance for the foal, you want the mare to carry it as close to term as possible. Unlike human babies, foals taken C-section prematurely have poor chance for survival.
membranes, and complications from that could be laminitis. Shedding the placenta is a key factor in the recovery/health of the mare. She might also hemorrhage or end up with peritonitis from leakage of fuid from the uterus, particularly if the foal was dead for any length of time. “We’ve also had mares that colic afterward, but probably the most com-

Health mon problem we see is retained fetal membranes,” said Barr. Aftercare of the mare includes IV fuids and antibiotics. “She would also need anti-infammatory medication,” said Barr. “If she had retained fetal membranes, she might need a lavage and maybe a little oxytocin. “It’s amazing how well these mares can do after a C-section, but we try to help them all we can. We keep them on a little Banamine to minimize pain and infammation, and they do fne. “If complications arise, you tailor the treatment toward dealing with whatever problem comes up. With the location of the incision, just like after colic surgery, the mare needs to be kept on limited exercise until it starts to heal. She should be confned to a stall for several weeks, and then start some hand walking.”
back,” said Barr. “I’ve seen some elective C-sections in which the foal is up and standing in the stall, waiting at the door for the mare while she is recovering. Ten there are those with complications that need a lot of intensive care. “With any of these foals, we generally put them on prophylactic antibiotics because they are more at risk for septicemia. We often give them IV fuid containing DMSO, vitamin C, and some other
afect her ability to have more foals. “I am often amazed at some of the mares that do get back into foal. In the elective C-sections that I’ve been involved with, most of them have gotten back into foal, and even 50-60% of the non-elective surgeries do get back into foal. Tus, having a C-section would not be a reason to not try to breed the mare again. “What we run into sometimes here with Toroughbreds is that it will depend
With a C-section, the foal might be compromised—if it is alive—and a little anesthetized. “Te foal will usually need care,” said Barr. “Tere’s risk of neonatal encephalopathy (disturbed neurologic function, such as reduced level of consciousness, or seizures, due to low oxygen levels during delivery). Tis is often the biggest complication you’ll see. Tis is why, as soon as we recognize that a mare needs to go to C-section, we want to do it as quickly as possible, with less risk for adverse impacts on the foal. “If the reason for the C-section was some type of contractual abnormality, those foals will need some splinting, if it’s something that can be corrected and the foal can be salvaged as an athlete.” After surgery, the mare’s colostrum and milk production might be compromised, so you need to make sure the foal gets adequate colostrum. Even if the mare has milk, it’s best to give the foal something immediately, or as soon as he is awake if he is a little groggy from the anesthesia given to the mare. Give it to him via tube unless he has a strong suckle. If you wait until the mare is up and steady enough for him to nurse, the foal might be three or four hours old, and that’s too late for colostrum. Aftercare for the foal will vary. “Some foals do fne and never look 54

things that might be neuroprotective and hopefully prevent secondary complications from neonatal encephalopathy from lack of oxygen.” FERTILITY RATES AFTER C-SECTION
If the mare recovers from surgery, she has a good chance for normal breed-back, if there’s no serious damage to the reproductive tract. “If the mare is having a foaling problem, the sooner you can get her to a hospital where she can be evaluated and the dystocia corrected or a C-section done, the better it will be for the mare and foal,” said Barr. “Otherwise, there might be some trauma and damage to the cervix that might impair future fertility. Tis is one of the reasons we might do a C-section; we don’t want to cause trauma to the mare because this could ultimately

on the time of year. If your mare had dystocia and a C-section in January, you could probably try to breed her in March or April. But if it was in April, you’d probably have to wait until the next year; she wouldn’t be recovered soon enough for this year. And, similar to pregnancy rates in general, the older the mare, the harder time she might have in getting back in foal.” Te chances of mares repeating the need for surgical delivery are low, unless it’s a mare with a pre-existing condition that precludes normal delivery. “It’s not like humans,” said Barr. “A normal mare probably won’t need a C-section with future foals. She could have subsequent foals born normally. One of my own mares had a C-section and then had a couple of foals vaginally in later years, with no problems.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Dec. 12, 2021.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
