UPDATE ON 2022 SPORTS WAGERING INITIATIVES
A
fourth initiative has now cleared the Attorney General’s Ofce and is eligible for signatures for the November ballot. Te Age-Verifed Tribal Online and In-Person Sports Wagering Regulatory Act is sponsored by Graton Rancheria, Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, and Wilton Rancheria. Te proposal seeks to allow a federally recognized Indian Tribe that has Indian land in California to elect to ofer online sports wagering entirely of Indian lands and not be subject to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA.) It also increases to 15% the gross revenues shared with non-gaming tribes. In return for allowing online and expanded in-person sports wagering and table games, tribes would pay another 10% of adjusted gross revenue to combat homelessness and mental health. Te required threshold of
verifed signatures for the 2022 ballot is 997,139. Te majority of gaming tribes still support the brick and mortar initiative (the only qualifed measure), which includes four California racetracks and is the only efort supported by CTBA. Te four tribes mentioned are also working on a well-funded, coordinated effort to move the measure through the Capitol and avoid the costly signature-gathering efort. Tere are serious concerns that the three online measures will seriously impact our ADW handle by eliminating racing’s exclusivity to California’s online wagering. And competition for online customers is very costly. Te value of many providers has fallen dramatically since May of last year due to promotions and taxes. A key question, analysts suggest, is whether controlling pricy promotions will pay of soon enough. Industry es-
timates the average costs per customer for online is between $300 and $500. Additionally, many tribes remain very concerned regarding the loss of in-person traffc to casinos. Tere will be a tremendous amount of money spent between now and November, more litigation, more provider promotions, campaign ads, and more polling. Some experts believe the original tribal efort will garner more support from voters who prefer the in-person requirement over mobile. Tey also believe voters have relationships and trust with the tribes they know in their local communities and may not be ready for big out-of-state interests to control California wagering. Voters might just vote no on all four if all four qualify. One thing is certain, the campaign teams are going to make a fortune on sports wagering in 2022.

NewsBits SHINNY LEADING WINNER OF 2021 California-bred Shinny distinguished himself in 2021 by leading all North American runners by wins with 12. Not only that, but 10 of those victories were consecutive. The son of Square Eddie accomplished his feat at Turf Paradise in Arizona and Canterbury Park in Minnesota. Owner Robert Rosette claimed Shinny Shinny for $3,500 at Turf Paradise Jan. 13 in what would be Shinny’s first win of his record run. Robertino Diodoro took over training Shinny upon the claim. Second in his next start, Shinny won the following race and then had to go six wide when sixth. After that he was unbeatable during the year, taking another race at Turf Paradise, six at Canterbury, and three more back at Turf Paradise. Reddam Racing bred Shinny, now a 5-year-old, from the Indian Charlie mare Cryptic and raced him early in his career. Shinny earned $114,091 during 2021, raising his lifetime earnings to $149,770. Not bad for a $3,500 claim.

California Cup at Santa Anita Jan. 15 was not only a success for state-breds, it was a winner in handle, which exceeded $17.2 million from all sources. That was the best California Cup handle since 2007. “We were very pleased with field size and the tremendous response from our fans, nationwide,” said Nate Newby, Santa Anita’s senior vice president and general manager. “We averaged 8.1 horses per race, and it was great to see so many familiar faces, older horses, geldings, and fillies and mares. “I think that underscores the tremendous horsemanship we continue to see here in California, and our fans love it because they get familiar with these horses and they truly look forward to watching them run and betting on them. We want to sincerely thank all of our owners and trainers for helping to make this happen, and hopefully it provides encouragement as well to our breeders statewide.” 6

NEWS
Halladay, a grade 1 son of War Front, has been retired from racing and will stand at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga. He is the property of a syndicate led by Adrian Gonzalez of Checkmate Thoroughbreds, and his introductory fee is $7,500, with shares available. Trained by Todd Halladay Pletcher and campaigned by Harrell Ventures, Halladay won three stakes, including the 2020 Fourstardave Handicap (G1) at Saratoga, and he earned $565,245. “He was precocious with elite cruising speed,” said Pletcher. “He never had a bad day on the track and was a pleasure to train.” Halladay is out of Hightap, a multiple graded stakes-winning daughter of leading sire Tapit. War Front has sired eight champions, and his sons at stud include The Factor, Omaha Beach, and War of Will. “He is a gorgeous, well-balanced horse standing 16.1 hands,” said Gonzalez of Halladay. “It is a rare opportunity to launch a stallion with this genetic makeup that is a grade I winner in California, and we are thrilled to present him.”

Horseshoe Board on Display Wallace S. Rohrer, a member of the International Union of Journeyman Horseshoers, created 14 handmade shoes specifcally crafted for the Toroughbred racehorse. Te California Toroughbred Foundation is honored to have this extraordinary example of his work in the form of a unique horseshoe board on display at the California Toroughbred Breeders Association. It demonstrates Rohrer’s abilities as well as pays tribute to the IUJH, which dates back to 1874. Rohrer, the son of a blacksmith, shod horses for some of the fnest California trainers from the 1950s-70s. He later became the paddock horseshoer at receiving barns of California racetracks, requiring him to check every horse for every race to confrm the runner was properly shod for that surface. He served on judging panels for the IUJH journeyman exam, a requirement for licensing as a farrier at California Toroughbred racetracks. Te rigorous test took fve hours in the forge and one hour under a horse. Te candidate had to make four diferent shoes (announced at the start of the test), beginning with a straight piece of light steel, and then had an hour to shoe a horse with aluminum plates. Tis was not a test for the faint of heart, but it assured that only top craftsmen worked on racehorses. Many of those shoes are part of the Foundation display board. Te board also includes an explanation of the various shoes and the remedies they can provide, such as keeping a horse’s front feet from hitting his hind feet during his stride. Such remedies lie in the hands, skill, and mind of the thinking blacksmith, important because there is no margin for error. To be a journeyman farrier is backbreaking work that requires high-quality tools specifc only to this trade, and the intelligence of the craftsman whose manual skill is both a science and an art. It is an honor to own and display this beautiful board of Toroughbred racehorse shoes made by a master. —Ada Gates Patton, farrier and an IUJH member since 1977

UNUSUAL HEAT TURF CLASSIC PRESENTED BY CITY NATIONAL BANK
ALIGATO OWNERS’ FIRST HOMEBRED IN SPECTACULAR STAKES DEBUT
ven without his victory on California Cup day, Aligato would be special to Bob Liewald and Lucy Lawrence because he is their frst homebred. But then in only his ffth start, he triumphed in the Unusual Heat Turf Classic Presented by City National Bank. “We started in racing with Little Red Feather,” said Lawrence. Tat experience proved so enjoyable that Liewald and Lawrence began Double L Racing. Retired from the technology business, they had moved to California from Pennsylvania and decided to breed California-breds. Tey purchased the Rock Hard Ten mare Pretty Hard from Ken and Sarah Ramsey in foal to the Ramseys’ good Kentucky stallion Kitten’s Joy. “We brought her out here so that the foal could be born in California,” said Lawrence. “Te mare went back to Grazen.” Liewald bred Aligato in partnership with Joe Mishak. Muhammed Ali is Liewald and Lawrence’s favorite athlete, so they named the colt Aligato, combining Ali with the Spanish word for cat. A few minor issues kept Aligato from reaching the races until his 4-year-old season in 2021. Gelded before his frst start, at Del Mar last summer, Aligato won once and fnished third twice last year, all at sprint distances on the turf. Trainer Mark Glatt looked forward to stretching out Aligato, saying, “We always thought he would improve when we had a chance to go further with him.”

Aligato storms home in Unusual Heat Turf Classic Presented by City National Bank
Te 1 1∕8-mile Turf Classic ofered that opportunity. Te only question was how to prep for it, especially after rain derailed Glatt’s initial plan. “I called Double L and told them that we had to kind of train up to it or run him two weeks ago going six furlongs,” the trainer said. Aligato broke slowly in that Jan. 1 race, put in a huge move on the outside on the turn, and then closed even more ground in the stretch to miss by just a nose. In the Turf Classic, Aligato made his stakes debut against six others, all with plenty of stakes experience. Favored Whooping Jay, multiple stakes-placed, had just been
claimed of of Glatt for $100,000. Indian Peak, Camino Del Paraiso, and Big Fish were multiple stakes winners. Sent of as the 3-1 third choice, Aligato settled into ffth early for jockey Flavien Prat. He revved up on the fnal turn, with Prat swinging Aligato wide for the stretch run. “When I got him to the outside, he kicked home well,” Prat said. Indeed he did, fying to the lead and defeating Camino Del Paraiso by 1 3∕4 lengths in 1:48.29, with Ferrariano third. “It was a long road here,” said Lawrence. “But we’re thrilled to be here and we’re thrilled that he’s a Cal-bred.”

RED BARON’S BARN RUNNER PUTS IT ALL TOGETHER

ast Draw Munnings doesn’t know it, but he picked the perfect time to turn in a winning performance. Twice third going into the Jan. 15 California Cup Derby, he experienced that lightbulb moment and scored by a game neck. It kept him from becoming a gelding a few days later. “I was going to cut him,” admitted trainer Jef Mullins. “He’s just been a knucklehead.” With Munnings developing into a good sire, keeping California-bred Fast Draw Munnings a colt could pay of. Fast Draw Munnings is the frst Tor-

oughbred bred by Glenn Porter. Bloodstock consultant Lisa Groothedde said that Porter is a client of hers and that she recommended breeding the Bedford Falls mare Zuzu’s Petals, a Calbred earner of $257,746, to Munnings. After Fast Draw Munnings was a $95,000 buyback at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton California 2-year-old sale, the Cohen family’s Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal purchased him. Mullins, who claimed the mare for $20,000 for Porter and Guy Taghavi in her second-to-last start, unveiled Fast Draw Munnings at Los Alamitos Sept. 17, where he broke his maiden by a half-length. Ten came the two thirds, in the Nov. 5 Golden State Juvenile Stakes and the Dec. 12 King Glorious Stakes. Finneus and

Straight Up G, the winners of those two stakes, returned for the Cal Cup Derby. Straight Up G went of as the 4-5 favorite in the 11∕16-mile Derby, with Finneus the 9-5 second choice. Bettors made Fast Draw Munnings the 4-1 third choice, with the other three in the feld all at double digits. Straight Up G prompted Highland Ghost’s early pace. Jockey Drayden Van Dyke had Fast Draw Munnings in the clear in fourth down the backside. Van Dyke said later that he hoped to sit behind those two and “that was exactly how it played out.” Going into the second turn, Highland Ghost and Straight Up G were still in front, with Sippin N Kissin, Finneus, and Fast Draw Munnings not far behind them. Te outside position gave Van Dyke a perfect spot from which to challenge. Straight Up G took command coming out of the turn, but Fast Draw Munnings didn’t let him get away. Tose two battled through the stretch, with Fast Draw Munnings edging the favorite, stopping the clock in 1:46.99. Finneus fnished third. Mark Cohen represented his family in the winner’s circle and said that his father, Jed, always has liked Fast Draw Munnings. “He thought he would be a special kind of horse, in particular as a Cal-bred,” said Mark. Mark noted that his family has been in California racing for about 60 years. Recently, they have campaigned top stakes runners, ranging from horses purchased in Europe to several Cal-breds.

Tor’s Echo Stakes, was back aboard. “I could tell he came to run because at the break he was trying to get the lead,” Hernandez said. “Once I was in the lead, that was it—I just let him run.” Brickyard Ride put his high cruising speed on display fantastically in the Sprint. He went to the front shortly after the break and clicked of the frst quarter-mile in :21.71 and a half-mile in :44.15. Tat might have looked fast by a stopwatch, but Brickyard Ride was doing it so easily that time was irrelevant. He soared in what was basically a workout for him. Hernandez didn’t need to push him in the stretch, and the winning margin of 13∕4 lengths could have been much more. Brickyard Ride completed six furlongs in 1:09.54. Positivity closed for second, with Letsgetlucky third. “I thought he ran great of of the layof,” said Lewis. Lewis knows Brickyard Ride well, having not only trained him throughout his career, but also having trained his sire, Clubhouse Ride. Pais gave the trainer a half interest in the mare, Brickyard Helen, a daughter of Southern Image, and LAYOFF there could be several full siblings coming Lewis’ way in the future. Meanwhile, Brickyard Ride has the potential for a great year. “When a horse turns 5, he’s a little bigger, a little stronger,” said Pais. Pais hopes to get Brickyard Ride to the Breeders’ Cup, and with the many diferent races, he has several options. Anything is possible.

f Brickyard Ride can springboard of of the 2022 California Cup the way he did last year, anything is possible. In 2021, Brickyard Ride captured the Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint en route to becoming a graded stakes winner. Owner/breeder Alfred “Sonny” Pais hopes a second victory could get them to the Breeders’ Cup.
In 2021, Brickyard Ride scored in the Sprint by 31∕4 lengths, having competed throughout 2020, most recently just a month previously. He impressed even more in 2022, not only by the ease with which he won his second consecutive Sprint, but also because it was his frst race in 41∕2 months. “I turned him out because things weren’t going his way,” Pais said. “I just wanted to give him some time of. When I turned him out, they said there was nothing wrong with him.” But Pais and trainer Craig Lewis know their horse, and Pais felt Brickyard Ride would thrive after a vacation. He was right. Despite the layof and against seven others, all with more recent form, Brickyard Ride commanded respect from bettors, who made him the 17-10 favorite. Te gray or roan daughter of Bayern—Cashing Tickets, by Indian Charlie, had been away from the races for fve months, but was no stranger to the Santa Anita turf course. Te William “Jack” Sims homebred won an allowance race over the strip in October 2020 and then added the 2021 edition of the Filly and Mare Sprint three months later. She took both the $101,000 Irish O’Brien Stakes and the $98,000 Fran’s Valentine Stakes later that year, and even picked up a graded stakes-placing when second in the $101,500 Wilshire Stakes (G3T).

She controlled a brisk pace under jockey Ricardo Gonzalez, ultimately darting clear to win by 2 1∕4 lengths in 1:12.99. Alice Marble and Eddie’s New Dream fnished second and third, while Warren’s Showtime closed from well back to be fourth. Leggs Galore has now won seven of 12 starts with one second-place efort for earnings of $440,208. She has been equally successful sprinting and going a mile, causing D’Amato to call her a “double threat.” “I think she can mile just as easily as she can sprint on the grass,” he said. “We will check our options, but down the road we want to see if we can get a graded stake win with her and make her a broodmare at the end of the year.” Leggs Galore’s win in the race was the fourth for D’Amato, following her win in 2021, S Y Sky in 2019, and Enola Gray in 2017. By the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Bayern, Leggs Galore is the third foal to race and third winner for Cashing Tickets. An unraced daughter of California-bred Indian Charlie, Cashing Tickets is a half sister to dual grade 3 winner and $496,560-earner Conveyance, who stands at stud in Washington. Cashing Tickets’ frst foal, Cash Register, won fve of 24 starts with 16 top-three eforts, and her second, White Mischief, won second time out. Cashing Tickets has a newly turned juvenile daughter of Into Mischief and a yearling flly by Good Magic. She was bred to Instagrand for 2022.

Dr. Ed Allred, Indian Charlie, and Cee’s Tizzy will be inducted into the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Hall of Fame
DR. ED ALLRED hen Hollywood Park closed in 2013 and the California Toroughbred racing industry needed more stabling, Dr. Ed Allred was there. When the Toroughbred industry needed workers’ compensation help, Allred was there. And when pandemic restrictions threatened to derail the 2020 Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale, Allred was there. Tough many know Allred from his incredible success in the Quarter Horse racing industry and his operation of Los Alamitos primarily as a Quarter Horse venue, he has been essential to the Toroughbred industry as well. He has stepped up numerous times with Los Alamitos’ facilities to help. Allred also has bred and raced many successful California-bred Toroughbreds. Te California Toroughbred Breeders Association, of which he is a member, is honoring Allred by inducting him into the CTBA Hall of Fame, not only for his accomplishments as an owner/breeder but also for his assistance to the entire industry. Allred learned to love racing initially through visits to Santa Anita with his stepfather and grandmother. An early trip to Los Alamitos began his love of Quarter Horse racing, a sport where Allred has earned just about every accolade imaginable. He has been the champion Quarter Horse breeder 13 times and champion owner six times. He raced 1971 world champion Charger Bar in partnership, and he bred champion Separatist. all-time leading owner and breeder. Allred breeds Quarter Horses and Toroughbreds at his Rolling A Ranch in Atascadero. He once told this magazine that “I don’t breed out of California, ever.” His Toroughbred homebreds include the Unusual Heat mare Warmth, from whom he bred North County Guy, winner of the 2021 Unusual Heat Turf Classic Stakes Presented by City National Bank for owners Nancy Messineo and Bruce Sands. Allred purchased a half-interest in Los Alamitos in 1990 with the help of close friend R.D. Hubbard, and Allred became the track’s sole owner in 1998. He built the track into one of the powerhouses of the Quarter Horse industry, home to the prestigious Champion of

Champions (G1) and Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity (G1). When the need for stabling and racing arose through the demise of Hollywood Park, Allred not only stepped in with a plan for year-round stabling at Los Alamitos, he expanded the track to accommodate Toroughbreds. Los Alamitos has a unique fexibility, able to host daytime Toroughbred races with a nearly onemile oval while still ofering the smaller fve-furlong confguration for nighttime Quarter Horse races. Los Alamitos hosts year-round Quarter Horse racing, as well as two short Toroughbred meetings. Several Cal-bred stakes are ofered annually at Los Alamitos, including the King Glorious Stakes and Soviet Problem Stakes for 2-year-olds

in December, giving young horses a good opportunity just before they turn 3. One of the frst Toroughbreds to take advantage of stabling at Los Alamitos was Cal-bred California Chrome. Art Sherman housed California Chrome at Los Alamitos for three years in between forays out of state. Te horse made his fnal California start and got the fnal victory of his career at Los Alamitos: the 2016 Winter Challenge Stakes. When horses were unable to train at Santa Anita in 2019, Allred made sure that horses prepping for the Triple Crown could train at Los Al. Omaha Beach, Game Winner, and Cal-bred Galilean were able to train there during that time. Allred conducts a major Quarter Horse sale at Los Alamitos every year, and so he extended that possibility to Fasig-Tipton when pandemic restrictions would not allow the 2020 yearling sale to be held at Fairplex. With very little lead time, the entire industry came together to put on that sale, topped by Cal-bred Finneus at $200,000. “I have to begin by thanking Doc Allred and the team and the staf at Los Alamitos,” said Boyd Browning, president and chief executive ofcer of Fasig-Tipton, after the sale, “because without their cooperation and efort and willingness to pitch in and help out the Toroughbred industry, this sale would not have taken place.” —Orlando Gutierrez and Tracy Gantz
INDIAN CHARLIE
I
ndian Charlie made the most out of the time he had. Although both his racing career and years as a stallion were cut short, his accomplishments at each job quickly rose to great heights, leading to his 2022 induction into the CTBA Hall of Fame. Hal Earnhardt, an Arizona native who changed racing history by supporting a young trainer named Bob Bafert when Bafert was conditioning Quarter Horses and then switched to Toroughbreds, bred Indian Charlie in California out of Soviet Sojourn. Hal and Patti Earnhardt had raced the Leo Castelli mare to multiple graded stakes victories. Hal Earnhardt sent Soviet Sojourn to the court of fourtime grade 1 winner In Excess, who was co-owned at that time by another of Baffert’s Arizona connections, Mike Pegram. Te result was a bay horse that Earnhardt named after the popular and humorous racing news-sheet Indian Charlie, the nom de plume of its founder, Ed Musselman. Given to Bafert to train, Indian Charlie tipped his hand in his frst career start, made Aug. 3, 1997, at Del Mar, when the 2-year-old streaked to a 12-length victory over seven rivals going 51⁄2 furlongs. Indian Charlie returned to the races the following February, and the results were equally as impressive. Traveling seven furlongs over a wet/fast Santa Anita racetrack
in allowance company, Indian Charlie won by nine lengths in a snappy 1:21.95. Tree weeks later, he tried two turns for the frst time, and took a one-mile allowance contest by 21⁄2 lengths in 1:35.02. Racing for the partnership of Hal Earnhardt III and the John R. Gaines Racing Stable, Indian Charlie was deemed ready for grade 1 company. On April 4, 1998, he faced six foes in the Santa Anita Derby (G1). Sitting second for nearly a mile, Indian Charlie was pulled out by jockey Gary Stevens and rocketed to the lead past the quarter pole, safely holding of stablemate Real Quiet late to score by 21⁄4 lengths. Real Quiet turned the tables in the Kentucky Derby (G1) a month later, in which Indian Charlie fnished third. Training up to the Haskell Invitational (G1), Indian Charlie pulled a suspensory and was retired to stud. He won four of his fve starts and earned $616,120. Kentucky Gov. Brereton Jones had the foresight to make the deal to bring Indian Charlie to his Airdrie Stud near Midway, Ky., to stand. Te horse’s impact was nearly immediate. Five-time grade 1 winner Indian Blessing was named champion 2-year-old flly and then champion female sprinter on her way to earning nearly $3 million. Another daughter, Fleet Indian, was a two-time grade 1-winning millionaire and was named champion older female. Indian Charlie sired Canadian champions Roxy Gap and Indian Apple Is. But he will be most readily remembered as a sire for Uncle Mo, a millionaire and

champion 2-year-old after winning the 2010 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). Uncle Mo has proved to be a potent stallion and an invaluable outcross. He is the sire of 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. His sons fll top stallion barns across the United States. Said Bret Jones, who runs Airdrie Stud with his father, “As brilliant as Indian Charlie was on the racetrack, his greatest legacy will be the contributions he’s made to the breed through his years at stud. He made the very rare transition from good sire to top sire to truly important sire. Trough his brilliant son Uncle Mo and the tremendous success he’s had as a broodmare sire, Indian Charlie’s name will appear on important pedigree pages for many generations to come. It’s a legacy born of his own incredible talents, and we will always be grateful to have been blessed with him at Airdrie.” Indian Charlie died after battling cancer in late 2011. —Lenny Shulman

f all Cee’s Tizzy did was sire Tiznow, he would be a worthy Hall of Fame member. But the stallion, who stood his entire career in California before his death in 2015 at age 28, did so much more. Cee’s Tizzy sired 40 stakes winners throughout his illustrious breeding career, including Eclipse Award and California-bred champions Tiznow and Gourmet Girl. Budroyale and Cost of Freedom were also Cal-bred champs, and all four earned at least $1 million, their earnings together totaling in excess of $11.5 million. Te Lucy Ruspoli Racing Stable bred Cee’s Tizzy, a son of Relaunch—Tizly, by Lyphard, in Kentucky. Cee’s Tizzy already had some California roots, though, because his second dam, Chilean-bred Tizna, had wowed Southern California fans with her weight-carrying ability. Tizna successfully toted 132 pounds when she won the 1976 San Gorgonio Handicap at Santa Anita. Her other stakes victories included two wins in the Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (G1). Agency bought Cee’s Tizzy for $72,000 as a yearling for Cecilia Straub-Rubens. John Russell trained the blazingly fast colt, who won at six furlongs in 1:07 4⁄5 and at a mile in 1:33 2⁄5 within 13 days at Del Mar in 1990. Tat led to the 1990 Super Derby (G1) at Louisiana Downs, where Cee’s Tizzy fnished third despite sufering a carpal fracture in the race that ended his racing career. Straub-Rubens retired Cee’s Tizzy to stud at Lakeview Toroughbred Farm in California. Keeping him in the state was a boon to the entire California Toroughbred industry, as well as Straub-Rubens. She bred her mare Cee’s Song to Cee’s Tizzy several times, with nine of the mare’s 13 starters by the stallion and fve of her nine winners by him. Tose included Tiznow, Budroyale, and Tizbud. Tiznow, the only two-time winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), was twice Cal-bred Horse of the Year and the national Horse of the Year in 2000. Budroyale, the 1999 Cal-bred Horse of the Year, won seven stakes, fve of them graded and one the 1998 California Cup Classic. Five years later Tizbud also won the Cal Cup Classic. Budroyale was a gelding, but Tiznow and Tizbud both went on to become excellent sires. Tiznow, pensioned in Kentucky in late 2020, sired such runners as Eclipse Award winner Folklore, grade 1 winners Well Armed and Colonel John, and 2008 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Da’ Tara. Tiz-

Straub-Rubens, who died in 2000, bred Tiznow, Budroyale, and Tizbud, but she wasn’t the only one to get top runners from Cee’s Tizzy. Carl and Olivia Cannata of Lakeview bred Gourmet Girl, a daughter of Cee’s Tizzy out of the Welsh Pageant mare Rhondaling. Racing most of her career for Gary Tanaka, Gourmet Girl won three grade 1 races, the 2001 Vanity Handicap and Apple Blossom Handicap and the 1999 Milady Breeders’ Cup Handicap. She was voted the 2001 national champion older mare and Cal-bred older female. Cee’s Tizzy moved to John Harris’ Harris Farms in 1994, where he spent the rest of his days. Harris Farms bred the Moscow Ballet mare Freedom Dance to Cee’s Tizzy to get Cost of Freedom, and raced him early in his career. Cost of Freedom won fve stakes when owned by Gary and Cecil Barber and trained by John Sadler. Straub-Rubens bred Cee’s Elegance, a 1997 daughter of Cee’s Tizzy—Elegant Beauty, by Norclife. Cee’s Elegance broke her maiden in 2000 before Straub-Rubens passed away, and the flly raced most of her career for Straub-Rubens’ heirs. Cee’s Elegance was voted the Cal-bred champion older female of 2003, when she won the A Gleam Invitational Handicap (G2). She ultimately earned $744,039. —Tracy Gantz

Te race for the leading California breeder literally came down to the fnal days of the year. Terry Lovingier, Nick Alexander, and Paul and Zillah Reddam’s Reddam Racing hit the wire together, with Lovingier edging Alexander by a nose and the Reddams a head back in third. Fourth-place Richard Barton Enterprises wasn’t that far behind the top three. All four breeders surpassed $2 million in 2021 earnings by horses they bred. Lovingier broke the $3 million mark, with $3,035,604. Alexander just missed both Lovingier and $3 million, with $2,929,879. Te Reddams clocked in with $2,770,729, followed by Barton with $2,364,604. leading overall sire by money earned, with $5,001,339. Tough his Cal-bred juveniles aided that total, it was Kentucky-bred Mind Control who was Stay Tirsty’s leading earner of 2021, with $356,500. A 5-year-

a majority interest in Stay Tirsty that moved him forward in 2021. Stay Tirsty stood his frst season in California in 2018, and thus his frst California-breds reached the races last year. Te stallion has made an immediate impact, with stakes winners and, in the case of a June 13 2-year-old race at Santa Anita, a trifecta of runners. Finneus, who led Sauls Call and Mr. T’s Tirsty to that trifecta, was Stay Tirsty’s leading Cal-bred earner of 2021. He was also the leading earner bred by Lovingier and has been famous almost since his birth. Lovingier bred My Fiona, the dam of Finneus, and raced her in partnership. In 2014, My Fiona was Lovingier’s top earner, helping him reach #3 on the leading breeders list, behind Perry Martin and Steve Coburn of California Chrome fame and Tommy Town Toroughbreds. My Fiona was voted that year’s champion Calbred 2-year-old female. As a broodmare, My Fiona frst went to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in Kentucky, producing Fi Fi Pharoah in 2018. My Fiona foaled Fi Fi Pharoah in California, and then Lovingier bred the mare to Stay Tirsty to get Finneus in 2019. Tat made Fi Fi Pharoah eligible for Cal-bred registration. Fi Fi Pharoah and Finneus contributed to Lovingier’s success as the 2021 leading breeder. Fi Fi Pharoah won the Melair Stakes and fnished second in the Evening Jewel Stakes. Finneus, who had already made headlines when he topped the 2020 Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale at $200,000, became a stakes winner in the Golden State Juvenile Stakes. Before that he had fnished second in the Best Pal Stakes (G2) and Runhappy Del Mar Futurity (G1). Trough the exploits of Finneus and his other Cal-breds, Stay Tirsty topped all other California sires of 2-year-olds in 2021 by money earned, with $1,261,654. He also led sires of 2-year-olds by number of winners (16) and number of races won (25). Stay Tirsty had a good sire career going before Lovingier moved him to California. Stay Tirsty’s other 2021 runners include City of Laurel Stakes winner Pickin’ Time, two-time stakes winner and Cal-bred Tirsty Always, and stakes-winning Cal-bred Rock N Rye. Lovingier stands many more stallions than Stay Tirsty at Lovacres whereas Alexander thus far has only had one stallion, Grazen. But what a sire Grazen is. Grazen consistently turns out stakes winners for Alexander, and 2021 was no exception. Lieutenant Dan was the top earner for Alexander and Grazen, collecting $407,720. He won the Eddie D. A Cal-bred son of Benchmark—Hazen, by Rubiano, Grazen has for many years fgured prominently on the state’s sire lists. For 2021, Grazen is third by money won and average earnings per runner. He led by average earnings per start, with $6,452, and ranked second among California turf sires. 38

omplications sometimes occur at foaling, and these can be minor or serious. Dr. Ahmed Tibary, professor of theriogenology at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Washington State University, says professional breeders usually have a standard protocol for post-partum examination of the mare by their veterinarian to fnd complications as soon as possible. “Tis examination is important for both the mare and foal and should occur within the frst 24 hours,” Tibary said. “Even if the foaling occurred quickly and with no

observed complication, this does not mean there are no problems in the mare. You cannot see cervical or vaginal injuries, and these may occur even without a dystocia. “No post-partum examination is complete without saving and examining the placenta. Breeders and mare managers can look at the placenta and consult the veterinarian if they see something abnormal, or save it for the veterinarian to examine. Just assuming it is complete and throwing it away is not a good idea; the placenta is where a lot of answers can be found. “Tere are two types of mares that we examine. Health ed bladder, severe rectal-vaginal tears (as when the foal’s foot pushes through the vagina into the rectum), or severe bruising or laceration of the vagina. “Tese can be complicated if the mare becomes infected, or can become aggravated by severe infammation,” said Tibary. “For example, simple vaginal bruising that is painful may prevent the mare from urinating or defecating because it hurts.” Te mare then becomes impacted, and this secondary problem might be worse than the primary problem. “Some of the preventative treatments for mares before foaling would include laxative feeds like bran mash, so that the bowel movements will be softer and more readily passed without causing pain,” Tibary said. Some broodmare farms and practitioners like to administer mineral oil to all post-partum mares, particularly those that have had some trouble during foaling in the past. One of the biggest emergencies in the mare after foaling is bleeding. “Tis may take hours to show up, or a few days, depending on the extent of the hemorrhage,” said Tibary. Just because a mare seemed fne after foaling doesn’t necessarily mean she’s out of danger. “Tis is why it is important to do the post-partum examination during the

frst 24 hours,” Tibary said. “Even if everything seems normal, the examination can help classify the mares as normal or needing more follow-up examination.” Such exams can alert the owner and veterinarian to something that could be a problem. “Post-partum protocol involves two things,” said Tibary. “Going into foaling, we need to have an idea of what

would constitute an emergency during foaling, because most of the post-partum problems will be linked to that. If breeders have a very good protocol about problems with foaling, they would also have a good protocol on post-partum care. When they get to the post-partum examination, they should realize that if everything has gone according to schedule, this doesn’t mean there will be no problems at all. Tey still have to do the post-partum check between 12 and 18 hours (24 hours at the latest). Tey should also try to identify emergencies as quickly as possible. “I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a post-partum exam. Last spring I had mares referred here that had retained placenta—that had gone on too long. One had gone on for 18 hours and one was close to 30 hours. We know how disastrous those can be. “Tere are also some clients who feel that if everything goes well with foaling and the mare seems fne and shed her placenta on time, etc., they don’t need to spend money to have a post-partum exam,” said Tibary. “I tell them that no one (except the mare herself ) knows whether the foaling was easy or not.”

WHAT IF THE MARE REJECTS THE FOAL?
After an initial post-partum examination at the farm, some mares need to be transferred to a veterinary clinic for further evaluation and treatment
Tere are many things you cannot see, such as internal trauma like a torn cervix. “Complications can arise if the mare is in pain and reluctant to defecate or urinate,” said Tibary. “Ten suddenly she has colic.” While veterinary advances have helped breeders and veterinarians deal with some of these problems and get better results, nothing is as important as early detection and diagnosis and thorough intervention. FOALING INJURIES AND PROBLEMS
Sometimes during a difcult foaling or manipulation of the foal to assist delivery, one of the foal’s feet may scrape or tear the uterus. “Te list of injuries that can occur during foaling is long,” said Tibary. “Tese need to be classifed as to seriousness. “If I were to rank various post-partum problems by frequency, the most common would be retained placenta— either total or partial. Tis could lead to complications such as toxemia. “Te second most common problem that is not quite an emergency but needs to be taken care of is rectal-vaginal tearing, with diferent degrees of seriousness. Some are more 54
dangerous than others. “After that, in almost equal proportion (and increasing in number when there’s been severe dystocia) are hemorrhaging, uterine prolapse, uterine tears, and vaginal/bladder prolapse (the bladder is pushed out during or immediately after foaling). “In mares, bladder prolapse is relatively common after severe dystocia, compared with other species, because the urethral opening in the mare is so large. Sometimes it is so large that you can put your whole hand into the bladder. Te minor problems that may become complicated later are bruising of the cervix, etc.” Some of these problems are not very common, but they do happen occasionally. “Tis is why every mare needs to be looked at after foaling, to pick up on those situations,” said Tibary. “Even if it is not life-endangering, it may still be a problem for the mare’s future fertility.” You might be able to treat or correct something now and prevent problems later. Some situations might not be correctable. You might have to make the hard decision about putting down the mare and ending up with an orphan foal.
CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ February 2022 ❙ www.ctba.com
“Often the cause of foal rejection— not allowing the foal to nurse—may be due to pain in the udder,” said Dr. Ahmed Tibary of Washington State University. “The mare may have mastitis or severe edema. This can jeopardize the life of the foal if he can’t obtain colostrum. “Breeders should always have a plan, in case of this emergency—to be able to supply substitute colostrum to feed the foal or to make up for lack of quality of the mare’s colostrum. They should also be aware of the need to examine colostrum quality.” The welfare of the foal is always part of the equation when a mare has a problem. “Anything that affects the mare can have an adverse affect on the foal, and vice-versa,” said Tibary. “For example, whenever a foal is hospitalized for some reason, this will affect the mare’s uterine involution.” If the foal can’t nurse, this can be a problem, since suckling stimulates contractions and shrinking of the uterus. “When we hospitalize the mare and foal, she also doesn’t get the exercise, which is crucial for post-partum involution of the uterus,” Tibary said. “Involution is activated by nursing and by exercise. Normal involution is hindered if the mare is just standing in a stall.” People are often so focused on the medical crisis of the mare or foal that they don’t think about the need for exercise for the mare. Post-partum emergencies are responsible for about 40% of mares that have problems with timely uterine involution. When talking with his veterinary students, Tibary tells them never to separate three important things when performing post-partum examinations—the mare, the placenta, and the foal. These are all very closely interrelated, and they all affect the health of the other. Mare owners need to have a plan for what they might do if they lose a mare and end up with an orphan, or have a foal that must have another source of colostrum or milk. “Things as simple as connecting with other breeders may be helpful, to see if there might be access to substitute colostrum, for instance,” Tibary said.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Dec. 31, 2021.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
