VALUE AT THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA SALE

ugust 17 marks the 19th consecutive renewal of the CTBA-hosted Northern California Yearling & Horses of Racing Age Sale. Over the years this sale has provided not only a service for California breeders but a very successful outlet for consignors and buyers. With the shrinking inventory of horses at California tracks, it is important to note that a very high percentage of horses that go through the sales ring at this venue continues to populate the feld sizes at Golden Gate Fields and

the Fairs. Many have also competed successfully in Southern California. Tis year we moved the date of the sale back a week in order to provide ample stabling at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. Trough the years this sale has proved to ofer tremendous value as purchasers have realized significant profts, both with racing and pinhooking. Based on the strength of the catalog, we have similar expectations this year. As in the past, there has been strong support from breeders and consignors located throughout the state.

As mentioned, this sale has not only provided the needed racing product for the state but has also produced many successful horses who have gone on to reward their purchasers with earnings considerably in excess of their original purchase prices. Highlighted below are some examples of recent successes from the past few years. One example is the catalog cover horse, Freeport Joe, winner of the Berkeley Handicap (G3) late last year. Cool Mountain Lad Scores at Pleasanton California-breds made up seven of the eight entries in the $75,900 Oak Tree Sprint Stakes July 2 at Pleasanton, so it wasn’t surprising to see Cal-breds run one-two-three. Cool Mountain Lad defeated Ultimate Bango by a head, with Carolina Mia third. Pedro Terrero rode Cool Mountain Lad, who came on late to collar Carolina Mia inside of the eighth pole and then hold of Ultimate Bango. Cool Mountain Lad completed the six Cool Mountain Lad furlongs in 1:11.06. William Lordan, Timothy Francis O’Leary, and Larry Powers own Cool Mountain Lad, and Victor Trujillo trains the 4-year-old gelding. Francis O’Leary bred Cool Mountain Lad, a son of Unionize—Honeysuckle Rose, by Stormin Fever. Te Oak Tree Sprint was Cool Mountain Lad’s frst stakes victory.

Cal-bred Wins at Emerald Downs California-bred Maybe I Will outfnished 2021 Washington Horse of the Year Blazingbellablu in the $50,000 Hastings Stakes at Emerald Downs June 26. She scored a neck victory in 1:08.38 for six furlongs under jockey Kevin Orozco. Maybe I Will pressed the pace outside of fellow Cal-breds Ima Happy Cat and Dafodil Sweet through a half-mile in :44.21, took the lead into the lane, and defeated closing Blazingbellablu in an extended drive to the wire. Favored Dafodil Sweet fnished third. Blaine Wright trains Maybe I Will for owner Tom Bachman, who bred the 4-year-old flly in the name of his Fairview entity. By Will Take Charge, Maybe I Will is out of the Henny Hughes mare My Due Process. Maybe I Will was winning her frst stakes and brought her total earnings to $125,326.

Forney Retires from TOC

Santa Anita is set to host the 2023 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will be for a record 11th time. It will be the 40th running of the event, and the 2023 series will be held Nov. 3-4. “Santa Anita Park is an integral part of Breeders’ Cup history and is the perfect venue for our landmark 40th running,” said Drew Fleming, president and CEO of Breeders’ Cup. Breeders’ Cup expects the 2023 World Championships to have a nearly $100-million impact on the Southern California economy, based on a 2017 study. The 2016 Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita holds the event’s all-time attendance record, with 118,484 fans. When the Breeders’ Cup was last held at Santa Anita in 2019, a new wagering record of more than $175 million was set. This year’s Breeders’ Cup will be held Nov. 4-5 at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Mary Forney, who has spent more than 40 years in the Toroughbred industry and is a former staf member of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association, retired as executive director of the Toroughbred Owners of California. Jordyn Egan, a California native most recently with the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, assumed the TOC executive director position efective July 20. Forney, in her frst full-time job and frst in the racing industry, worked as the administrative assistant to the general manager during most of her years at the CTBA from 1974-92. She also wrote several articles for this magazine. She subsequently worked for Santa Anita for many years and has been with the TOC for the past 18 years. During her tenure with TOC, Forney was invested in its success as she oversaw an extraordinary number of initiatives and committees Mary Forney and built long-lasting relationships with industry stakeholders. Born and raised in Fallbrook, Egan graduated from the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program and completed the Godolphin Flying Start management program. Since 2013 she has served as director of special projects for the MHBA. Longtime TOC director Jack Owens also has retired from that position. Elected to the TOC’s frst board in 1996, Owens served as its chairman for six years as well as on several TOC committees. TOC membership elected Johnny Taboada to its board as well as re-elected incumbents Nick Alexander, Joe Ciaglia, Samantha Siegel, and Bob Liewald. All were elected to threeyear terms. Te TOC also selected Josh Rubenstein to receive the 2021 Ed Friendly Industry Service Award. Rubenstein, who will be recognized at TOC’s Southern California annual meeting at Del Mar Aug. 13, is president and chief operating ofcer of Del Mar and has been with the track for 35 years.

Strong Wind

Curtis Conrad Lanning, who with his late wife, Lila, bred and raced numerous top Thoroughbreds in California, died June 30 of natural causes. He was 87. A longtime resident of Mesa, Ariz., Lanning was born in Minnesota in 1935. He excelled in football and basketball at Lake Benton High School in Lake Benton, Minn. He moved with his frst wife to California in 1955, where they had daughter Connie in 1957, son Craig in 1960, and son Paul in 1967. In California, Curt joined his brothers in building a distribution business that he ran successfully until 2011. Lanning met Lila Bortolin when they were playing in different bowling leagues. They married in 1980, and with their marriage their family grew to four children with Lila’s son Chris. The Lannings owned hundreds of horses during their 40-year marriage, buying many at public auction and also breeding their own (Lila died in 2021). Ed Moger trained such California-bred stakes winners for the Lannings as $657,027-earner Qiaona, $344,313-earner Gentle Charmer, $429,437-earner Phaenna, and $289,354-earner Zoning In. Their leading homebred earner was Tribal Storm, a 2014 Cal-bred gelded son of Papa Clem. Tribal Storm won the 2017 Harris Farms Stakes and 2018 Lost in the Fog Stakes and fnished third in the 2017 El Camino Real Derby (G3) for the Lannings before he was claimed for $62,500 in 2018. Qiaona cost the Lannings $4,500 at the 2011 Barretts October sale, and she won the 2013 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes and California Distaff Handicap. Gentle Charmer, a $17,000 purchase, won the 2007 California Cup Distaff Handicap. The Lannings for many years bought yearlings at the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Northern California sale. They purchased stakes-placed Inspiration Within for $11,000 in 2005 and stakes-placed Legal Separation for $2,000 in 2008. Thoroughbred racing, golf, and their dogs were some of the Lannings’ passions. The Thoroughbred Owners of California honored them with its Chairman’s Award in 2002. Lanning was preceded in death by his parents, George and Corrine Lanning; brothers George, Arthur, and David; and son Craig Lanning. Survivors include children Connie Holdampf and Paul Lanning, three grandchildren, and fve great-grandchildren. The family will hold a private memorial gathering in August and asks that any donations made in Curt’s honor go towards the Humane Society.

10 YEARS AGO During the Del Mar season of 2012, California-bred STRONG WIND became a stakes winner after breaking his maiden at Hollywood Park. In the $100,000 Graduation Stakes Aug. 1, the 2-year-old colt bobbled at the start but recovered to challenge for the lead in the turn of the 51⁄2-furlong race. With Kevin Krigger aboard, Strong Wind drew off to score by 41⁄4 lengths in 1:04.14. Steve Knapp trained Strong Wind for the Roncelli Family Trust and Bill and Sue Tomasic. Knapp had purchased Strong Wind for $24,000 at the 2011 Barretts October yearling sale. Mark Tatch bred the son of Tribal Rule—Chalk Face, by Memo. Strong Wind went on to place in three more stakes and earned a total of $255,094.

50 YEARS AGO Three-year-old SOLAR SALUTE was the victim of bad racing luck in the 1972 Oceanside Handicap at Del Mar, being boxed in for most of the race and fnishing second. The California-bred did much better in the La Jolla Mile Handicap Aug. 12. He battled with New Prospect and won by 11⁄4 lengths under jockey Bill Mahorney. Solar Salute’s time of 1:342⁄5 broke the stakes record set by Jungle Road fve years earlier. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Elmore Sr. bred Solar Salute, a son of Windsor Ruler—Solecco, by Solarium II. Lou Glauberg trained the colt for the Elmores. The La Jolla Mile was the fnal stakes win in a superb season for Solar Salute, who won seven stakes during the year, including the Santa Anita Derby.

GOLDEN GATE TO HOST OWNERS LUNCHEON

(G2) Aug. 6, 1997. With Corey Nakatani in the irons, Career Collection settled into ffth, collared the leaders, and won by an emphatic fve lengths as the even-money favorite. She covered the 61⁄2 furlongs in 1:17.83. Wally Dollase trained Career Collection for John and Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm. The Mabees bred the daughter of General Meeting—River of Stars, by Riverman. The winner of two more stakes during her career, Career Collection earned $560,477. She twice went through the Keeneland November sale, bringing $1.9 million in foal to Gone West in 2000 and $450,000 in foal to Unbridled’s Song in 2004.

■ Conquest Farenheit Gets First Winner Conquest Farenheit, who stands at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga, was represented by his frst winner when Rose Girl won at Los Alamitos June 26. She is from the 8-year-old stallion’s frst crop. Rose Girl was making just her second start in the fve-furlong maiden event for California-bred or California-sired 2-year-olds. Ridden by Edwin Maldonado, she sat off the pace, came four wide, and defeated The Reign Song by three-quarters of a length in :58.02. Luis Mendez trains Rose Girl for owner Dan Northrup. Craig Martin bred the flly out of the California-bred stakes-placed Swiss Yodeler mare Swissarella. Conquest Farenheit won the 2017 Pasadena Stakes and Baffe Stakes at Santa Anita and ran second in the 2016 Summer Stakes (G2T) at Woodbine. The stallion, a son of Scat Daddy earned $187,655.

Sherrie Monroe Sherrie Monroe, a trainer based in Northern California, died June 18. During her career Monroe saddled 346 winners in 3,917 starts, for total purse earnings of $5,492,053. Monroe trained many California-breds. Her leading earner, according to Equibase, was Cal-bred Elle Woods Too. The trainer owned Elle Woods Too, a daughter of Tannersman and an earner of $138,419. For the Ellwood Johnston Trust, Monroe trained Ready Say Go, a Cal-bred gelded son of Unusual Heat and an earner of $136,567. Monroe also saddled Prestigious Chief, owned by Betty, E.W., and Judy Johnston, to win the 1999 C.B. Afferbaugh Stakes at Fairplex Park. Old English bred the son of Chief’s Crown in California. Other Cal-breds Monroe trained during all or part of their careers include stakes-placed Kitty Marie, $171,305-earner River Ella, and $159,360-earner Muy Rapido.

Tim Arterburn Retired trainer Tim Arterburn, the son of former jockey and trainer Jack Arterburn, died June 7 at age 62. Arterburn was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. The family moved to Phoenix, and he graduated from Greenway High School there. Tim grew up on a ranch and participated in 4-H with horses, dogs, and cattle. He attended Brigham Young University and, in later years, the University of Las Vegas. He initially went to work as a groom for his uncle, Buster Pollard, at Bay Meadows. Tim also worked as an assistant to his father before going out on his own as a trainer. Horses Tim trained include multiple stakesplaced Cal-bred Perfect Timing and Canadian-bred stakes winner Splendour Boy. Tim was the brother of trainer Lonnie Arterburn, who along with Kim and Eve Kuhlmann bred multiple Cal-bred champion Lava Man. Tim and Lonnie’s sister Tami is married to retired Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze.

SANTA ANITA SHIP & WIN AGAIN OFFERS BONUSES Santa Anita’s “Ship & Win” program will again be offered at the track’s 18-day autumn meet, which opens Sept. 30. With a $5,000 bonus in place for any eligible horse making its frst start and a 35% bonus, excluding stakes races, also available, the Ship & Win program, in conjunction with Del Mar, has proved highly popular. Horses that currently qualify for Del Mar’s summer “Ship & Win” program will retain eligibility for one start at Santa Anita, providing they do not start at any other track between the conclusion of Del Mar’s summer meet Sept. 11 and the beginning of Santa Anita’s autumn meet. In order for a specifc horse to be eligible for program bonuses, they must have made their most recent start outside of California and not have started in the state within the past 12 months.

2022 Northern California Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale Te CTBA will conduct this year’s Northern California sale Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Amador Pavilion at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton beginning at noon. Please note: Tis is a change from the original date due to current stabling issues with Northern California racing. Te sale horses will be stabled in the permanent barns near the Amador Pavilion. Allison Salinger a Worthy Scholarship Recipient Early every year, part of the California Toroughbred Foundation’s mission to support veterinary students focused on the Toroughbred manifests itself in the choice of a third-year student at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona. We decided to look in on the 2017 Foundation choice, Allison Salinger, and see what she has been doing. Originally from Pennsylvania, Allison graduated from Virginia Tech University with a bachelor of science degree in biology focused on research. Before she graduated from Western University in 2018, Allison was one of 33 veterinary students nationwide to receive fnancial support from the Winner’s Circle Scholarship Program, sponsored by the American Association of Equine Practitioners’ Foundation, Platinum Performance, and Allison Salinger the Race For Education. Allison started at Mississippi State in July 2019 and is now a third-year large animal surgery resident at the university. Her work includes a study that investigated how a novel, headless screw could repair carpal bone fractures in racehorses. Te study demonstrated that this screw compares favorably to others used and that its design ofers other advantages as well. Tat could give veterinarians more options in equine surgery. At Mississippi State, the Animal Health Center provides expert veterinary care, and it is a facility where a horse owner’s regular veterinarian may refer someone to a specialist there. Allison is a resident house ofcer and for the past three years has regularly performed equine surgeries in concert with her faculty professors. Soon she will complete her equine surgery residency at Mississippi State and move on to the next phase of her career. Te Foundation is honored to have supported an exceptional veterinarian in her long and exhaustive studies as an equine surgeon.

It is an auction that produces good runners every year, as attested to by graduates such as Camino Del Paraiso and Big Fish. Te CTBA will conduct this year’s edition Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton beginning at noon. Te horses will be stabled in the permanent barns near the Amador Pavilion. George Krikorian bred Big Fish, a $45,000 Northern California sale graduate who became a champion California-bred. Big Fish is by Krikorian’s stallion Mr. Big, who will be represented by three yearlings in the sale, all in the consignment of Linda Madsen’s Milky Way Farm. Not only is Hip #54 by Mr. Big, but he is out of the Orientate mare Quick Chick. Tat makes him a full brother to Big Returns, another Krikorian-bred runner. Cal-bred Big Returns won the 2019 Graduation Stakes at Del Mar and earned $131,200. Te second and third dams, Kuanyan and Plate Queen, are also stakes winners. Acclimate is a multiple graded stakes-winning Cal-bred to come out of

Through offering partnerships in top horses, Terrry Lovingier is interested in attracting more Californians to Thoroughbred racing and ownership

he term “leading breeder” can mean many things. In its simplest terms, it’s the name at the top of the year’s purse earnings list, which is where Terry Lovingier found himself in 2021. But leading breeders also afect other aspects of the industry, and last year Lovingier personifed that maxim. Tus, he is being honored as the Toroughbred Owners and Breeders Association California breeder of 2021.

Lovingier brought Stay Tirsty to California, ofered him to state breeders, and supported the stallion with mares of his own. As a result, Stay Tirsty dominated California stallion lists in 2021, especially among the 2-year-old ranks. With his frst California crop, Stay Tirsty led all other sires of California-conceived 2-year-olds by purse earnings, number of winners, and number of races won. Including all of his ofspring, Stay Tirsty had 2021 purse earnings of $5,001,339, to lead all other state stallions.

Lovingier supports the California breeding industry in many other ways. His Lovacres Ranch consistently brings large consignments to California’s sales. He also serves as chairperson of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association. But perhaps Lovingier’s biggest contribution is in bringing others into horse ownership. He puts together small partnerships on many of his homebreds, keeping a piece himself while seeing to it that his partners share the limelight.

At the CTBA awards banquet earlier this year, Lovingier collected several awards. Each time he brought up partners in the various champions being honored. When My Fiona was announced as Broodmare of the Year, Lovingier posed with co-owners Tom Beckerle and Amanda Navarro along with Modesto, Gregorio, and Jessica Rincon, who are integral to the operation of Lovacres. “I want to acknowledge Gregorio— he’s been with me from day one,” said Lovingier from the podium as he accepted My Fiona’s trophy as well as his leading breeding honor. Gregorio is the breeding manager at Lovacres, responsible for overseeing the breeding of the seven stallions that stand at the ranch. Beckerle noted that he got into racing as an investor, met Lovingier, and became involved with several Lovacres horses. In addition to My Fiona,

Beckerle co-owns the mare’s Cal-bred stakes-winning American Pharoah flly Fi Fi Pharoah and At the Spa, the 2021 champion Cal-bred 2-year-old flly bred by Lovingier. Jorge Periban trains At the Spa for Lovingier, Saul Carrillo, and Grifn Stables, a group Beckerle put together with longtime friends from high school. “I just hope that we continue with the momentum and get more people in on horse racing,” said Beckerle, who added that fnding new people depends on “horses like this and people like Terry.” Lovingier bred Finneus, the 2021 champion Cal-bred 2-year-old male. He owns the son of Stay Tirsty—My Fiona with Navarro and Naseer Mohammed Fasihuddin. Finneus, trained by Walther Solis, won the 2021 Golden State Juvenile Stakes, placed in two graded stakes, and earned $266,366. “I went to Lovacres when Finneus was six months old,” said Fasihuddin.

“I called Terry and told him that I want to be an owner of this horse. Terry was so good to give me a chance to be part of this horse.” Lovingier also bred Rock N Rye, winner of the 2021 Graduation Stakes, and Tirsty Always, winner of the 2021 Royal Owl Stakes. Both runners are by Stay Tirsty and were train.ed last year by Solis. Lovingier owns Rock N Rye with Tom London and Eugene Zondio. He owned Tirsty Always with Beckerle and Carrillo until the ridgling was claimed away earlier this year. As the TOBA California breeder of 2021, Lovingier isn’t resting on his laurels. He is vying with Nick Alexander at the top of the 2022 California breeders list and has Stay Tirsty’s second California crop coming along. Lovingier also has high hopes for Smokem, a young Union Rags stallion standing at Lovacres whose frst foals are already winning this year.

n the near future, the Carleton F. Burke Memorial Library will transition to California Polytechnic University, Pomona, where it will continue to be available locally. Cal Poly also has the resources to make some of the library’s volumes available digitally, with worldwide access via the Internet. None of these technologies were available, of course, when the California Toroughbred Breeders Association began the creation of a library in the late 1950s. Te idea

of a library grew out of the CTBA’s move to 201 Colorado Place in Arcadia, ofces the organization maintains to this day. Te creation of the California Toroughbred Breeders Foundation, now the California Toroughbred Foundation, allowed for easier donations to the library, which was formally dedicated in 1964. Two years later noted Turf writer and racing historian B.K. Beckwith began a series of articles about the library in this magazine, then known as Te Toroughbred of California. His frst article, printed in the June 1966 issue, reported on the creation and development of the

library, and excerpts from that article are reprinted here, along with historical and current photos of the Burke Library. “In January of 1957 the California Toroughbred Breeders Association moved from its rented and rather limited quarters on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood to a new and gracious building at 201 Colorado Place in Arcadia,” began Beckwith. “Tis long, ranch-house type structure, located on afable acreage almost within the shadow of Santa Anita’s towering stands, was the realization of a dream which its founders had harbored for nearly a quarter of a century.” Beckwith noted that the CTBA had a “meager selection” of books at the rented Sunset Boulevard ofce, “only three or four small bookcases in which were stored some basically important reference books, such as charts and manuals and stud books, but even these were not in complete series form.” Today, much of this material is available online. More than 60 years ago, however, equine research had to be done painstakingly by hand. To research a Toroughbred required delving into stud books for pedigree information and chart books for a horse’s racing record. Beckwith’s article pointed out the diffculty of amassing such information. “When the move to Arcadia came in ’57, it necessitated little more than a few automobile trips with the back seat and the trunk loaded to transport what then comprised the CTBA Library.” Lou Rowan, then president of the CTBA, wrote an editorial that appeared in the January 1957 issue of this magazine. He suggested that people could help create a more complete library through donations. “With the new and commodious facilities available for the Library at Arcadia,” Rowan wrote, “it seems ftting that a gentle hint to generous horsemen and horsewomen might be in order.” Tat prompted contributions from early donors, listed by Beckwith as Peter Strub, Walter Hofman, Ted Williams, Dr. Chester Wilson, Walter Tryon, Col. George Caldwell, Carleton F. Burke, Frank Bishop, Ed and Tevis Paine, Col. T.E. Whitehead, the Los Angeles Turf Club, Dwight Murphy, Frank E. Kilroe,

Mrs. Grace Cooper Vance, Mrs. Leone C. Hart, Lee Mosbacher, Kid North, and Tom Caldwell. Te CTBA also purchased many volumes to fll in the research gaps. “During this formative period of the Library, many people were helpful in its growth,” Beckwith wrote, “but the real ‘leg work’ was, in great measure, carried on by the Association’s General Manager, Col. F.W. Koester. By actual contact and by hundreds of letters to friends and acquaintances who represented every phase of horse activity, he relentlessly and with the utmost dedication pursued his and the CTBA Directors’ dream of a complete equine athenaeum. If he heard that any individual had one or more horse books which might be consigned to oblivion he got in his car right then and drove to the person’s house before he or she could either heave the article out or otherwise dispose of it.” It took until 1959 for the library to really take shape. “For several months prior to that date the Directors of the CTBA had been

considering the matter of purchasing the renowned Kent Cochran collection,” wrote Beckwith. “Cochran, Daily Racing Form columnist and former editor of Te Toroughbred of California, had been an avid book collector for many years. He had become known throughout the horse world as a man always in the market for equine literature and had acquired a truly remarkable, astoundingly diversifed and very valuable assemblage of writings which covered every facet and function of horse activity.” Cochran had such a knowledge of the California Toroughbred racing and breeding industry that the CTBA in the 1970s urged him to write a book about it. Ten in his late 80s, Cochran declined due to his health and age. Instead, Mary Fleming, on staf of this magazine, undertook the project, relying heavily on Cochran’s help, writing that his letters “were flled with rich memories and reminiscences.” Fleming dedicated A History of the Toroughbred in California to Cochran, who died at age 92 and didn’t see the completed project. Cochran’s collection of books totaled more than 4,000 and were a valuable addition to the Burke Library. Beckwith noted that the collection flled in gaps in chart books and American Racing Manuals. It included bound volumes of such magazines as Te Spirit of the Times; Turf, Field and Farm; and The Sporting Mirror. Some of the California racing reportage in the Cochran collection dates back to the 1850s. Once the Foundation was incorporat-

“Aside from a lengthened mail room and a new front ofce on the west, a new storeroom and magazine make-up room were added on the east end. Tis allowed the Library to extend through what had been the old storeroom and thus gave it an expansion of 20 by 21 feet.” At that time, Col. Koester and the CTBA board of directors decided to honor the late Carleton F. Burke by naming the library after him, with a dedication ceremony held March 6, 1964. Burke, who died in 1962, had been the frst chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, director of racing at Santa Anita, and a secretary-treasurer of the CTBA. Two years later following that dedication, the library received a contribution of 2,638 books from Edward Lasker, a former CTBA director and prominent Toroughbred owner and breeder. Beckwith wrote that these included racing calendars representing 37 nations and districts, with some of the books going back to the 1700s. Donations came in well past the time of Beckwith’s original article, leading to the collection topping more than 10,000 volumes today. In Cal Poly’s keeping, the library will continue to be known as the Burke Library, with the majority of the books going to the university. However, the CTBA will continue to house at the Arcadia ofce its entire collection of bound volumes of its own magazine, as well as bound volumes of Te Blood-Horse and Te Toroughbred Record.

alifornia breeder Ronald Rand certainly had a lifelong horse connection, but the racing bug didn’t truly bite until Aug. 28, 2011. Tat was the day California-bred star Acclamation won the $1 million TVG Pacifc Classic (G1) by a head. “Tat was defnitely the catalyst for getting me in horse racing,” Rand said. Acclamation’s career is worthy of the silver screen, as the son of Unusual Heat—Winning in Style, by Silveyville, earned $1,958,048 with 11 wins, two seconds, and six thirds in 30 starts.

“He won the Eddie Read (G1T) twice, and the Charles Whittingham (G1T) three times,” said Rand. “But that Pacifc Classic—that was the ride that did it.” Pitted against graded stakes stars Twirling Candy and Game On Dude, Acclamation went to the lead under Patrick Valenzuela and kept going. His achievements in 2011 earned him the title as the Eclipse Award national champion older male. Long before that fateful day at Del Mar, Rand’s family was already in the horse business. It traces back two generations and has gone on to the next one. Rand’s daughter Courtney served as the veterinarian for Old English Rancho, the major California breeding farm that bred Acclamation and stood him during his early stud career. She is now the veterinarian for John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga. “My paternal grandfather had a horse farm back in Rock Creek Township, Ind.,” Rand said. “Tey were mainly pleasure horses that he raised and sold, but there was a horse connection in my life going back that far.” Rand’s father moved from Indiana to California and ultimately settled in San Bernardino around 1950. Years later he ended up with a racehorse. “Te publisher of the newspaper out there had a breeding operation, and my dad ended up buying a yearling colt from them,” said Rand. Another early racing memory that stuck with Ronald Rand was an advertisement in the Wall Street Journal in 1973. “I was a Navy carrier pilot, and I got home from Vietnam in April of 1973,” he said. “At the time, Cessna Aviation had come out with the Cessna Citation jet, and they ran an ad that said, ‘From Citation to Secretariat, Good Luck.’ ” Secretariat went on that year to become the frst horse since Citation in 1948 to win the Triple Crown. Lastly, Rand’s future wife, Cathy, was an accomplished rider who studied at the University of Kentucky. “Horses were kind of always in my family, you might say,” Rand noted.

SNAKEBITE IN HORSES WHAT TO DO UNTIL THE VET ARRIVES

he rattlesnake, the most common poisonous snake in the U.S., is often found in California. Similar to people and other animals, horses can be susceptible to snakebites.

Rattlesnakes belong to a larger family of snakes called pit vipers, which includes the water moccasins and copperheads. All of these can be dangerous, but the potency of a bite depends on the amount of venom the snake injects, the types of toxins in the venom, and 34

the size of the bitten animal. Very small animals such as rodents and birds die quickly; this is how the snake kills its prey. Larger animals are less at risk for immediate death, but a bite can still be dangerous, especially for a small child or pet. Large animals such as horses or cattle are less likely to be killed by the venom itself but could die from complications such as swelling on the face or infection from the bite wound. Dr. Jen Haugland, an associate veterinarian at Sorensen Veterinary Hospital in Belgrade, Mont., has treated many snake-bitten animals. “Most of the bites in this region are

from the prairie rattlesnake (Crotalis viridis) and several sub-species,” she said. “Te rattlesnake vaccine that’s available to give protection to horses or dogs is not tailored to this type of snake, however. It is more specifc against efects of western diamondback venom—a snake that is more common in Texas and the Southwest—but this vaccine may provide some cross-protection. “Tere are three kinds of bites, but only two are actually a problem. A dry bite injects no venom. Tere is also a bite for killing prey and a bite for defense. Most of the bites in cattle and horses are defensive bites.” In those cases, the snake is startled by

the sudden approach of a large animal and strikes reactively. Or if the animal gets too close even after the snake rattles as a warning, the snake strikes and bites. “Tis quick bite is usually a smaller dose of venom,” Haugland said. Cattle generally recover without treatment, even when bitten on the nose or face. Swelling around the nose tends to shut of the airways, but cattle can breathe through their mouths. Horses are more likely to sufocate. Snakebite on a horse’s face or muzzle can be an emergency, and if you don’t fnd the horse in time, you will lose the horse. A large snake that hasn’t bitten/eaten for several days, and has a full pouch of venom, is deadlier than a small snake or any snake that has recently bitten and killed prey. Venom contains several types of toxins. Te primary toxin depends on the type of snake, according to Dr. Ginger Elliot, a veterinarian in Guthrie, Texas, who has seen many snakebites in large animals during her years of practice. “Of the 21 species of rattlesnakes in the western U.S., the prairie rattlesnake is the most numerous and the western diamondback is the largest,” Elliot said. “Te rare Mojave rattlesnake inhabits Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and southwestern Texas.” Toxins in rattlesnake venom immobilize and kill prey (small rodents) and break down their body tissues to start the digestive process. “Te main toxins are myotoxins (the primary toxins in western diamondback venom), which create rapid swelling, pain, and bleeding at the bite site, and hemotoxins (the main toxin in prairie rattler venom) that damage blood vessels,” Elliot said. “Te toxins create infammation, tissue destruction, and blood-vessel leakage—allowing the venom to spread.” If you fnd an animal that’s been bitten, try to give emergency treatment without moving the animal very much because increased activity and blood circulation will spread the toxins farther. Exertion might make it more difcult for the animal to breathe if the face or muzzle is swelling. Haugland say that you need to get the animal past the frst trauma so that it is able to breathe. and provide supportive care. Even then, a bite can cause necrosis (tissue death) of the heart muscle. “Tere may be permanent damage to heart, kidneys, or lungs,” Haugland said. “Tese are the sneaky underlying problems that may show up later. Use of antivenin—if available—helps prevent or reduce the chances for this kind of sequel.” TREATMENT

Dr. Robert Cope, a veterinarian in Salmon, Idaho, points out the two primary things to worry about in a snake-bitten animal: swelling and infection. Swelling on the face can shut of the airways, and dying tissue around a bite can send infection through the body, causing fever and blood poisoning (septicemia). Any bite in soft tissues can become infected. “With a snake bite, infection is sometimes more dangerous than the venom,” Cope said. “Te bacterial population in a snake’s mouth is huge, and the bite victim often ends up with a nasty infection at the site of the bite.” Cleaning and disinfecting the bite can help, plus use of antibiotics until the danger of infection is past. Your veterinarian can prescribe an appropriate antibiotic. A tetanus vaccination is also wise if the horse’s tetanus shots are not current. If the bite is several days old before discovered, such as a horse out on pasture, he could have developed a large infected swelling that needs to be lanced and fushed. Anti-infammatory medication can reduce swelling and pain. DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) gel or liquid can be rubbed over

the area that is swelling. If the animal was bitten on the face and is having trouble breathing, liquid DMSO can also be given orally. Mix it with a little warm water and squirt it into the back of the mouth with a syringe, where it can be rapidly absorbed and can help keep air passages open by halting tissue swelling. Another drug often used for reducing swelling and infammation is dexamethasone. In severe cases of swelling on the head, where the animal is in danger of sufocation, immediate treatment is crucial. “If you can catch it early, just starting to swell, your veterinarian can put an endotracheal tube with a cuf into the nasal passage to keep it open while doing something to reduce the swelling,” Cope said. If the veterinarian can’t get there quickly, you could insert a six- to eight-inch piece of hose (or a plastic syringe barrel) into one of the nostrils. For a young, small horse, smaller tubing would work. Lubricating the end of the tube makes it easier to insert. Haugland says you can use the casing of a 30-20cc syringe, as long as it’s not too large for the nostril. “Te syringe casing is tapered, which makes it easy to insert into the nose to keep an open airway,” Haugland said. “It’s especially important to do something like this with a horse that’s been bitten on the face or nose because horses can’t breathe though their mouth. Tey usually get bitten on the face because they approach the snake to see what is making the rattling sound.” If the swelling is too large and the airways are already squeezed shut, an emer-

gency tracheostomy is needed to maintain an active air passage. It’s best if this can be done by a veterinarian, but if there is no way the vet can get there on time, the owner could try to do it. “With the animal adequately restrained, make a vertical incision through the skin, along the windpipe, right in the middle of the throat—so you can get down to the rings of the trachea,” Cope said. “Ten use your fngers to open that slit a bit wider side to side so you can make a stab incision between the rings. “If that’s not enough of a hole, cut a small circle, removing some of the cartilage ring to make a bigger hole. Often a pocketknife stab is enough between the rings to get it open for air fow. If you have to, you can slip a small piece of hose or tube into that hole to keep it open. Tis could buy the animal time until the veterinarian arrives and can take it from there.” After the swelling is resolved and the windpipe is no longer restricted, the incision can be sutured. “A bite on the leg is usually not as serious, depending on where it is,” Cope said. “Te higher on the leg, the worse it might be. Toxins could get into the bloodstream quicker. We worry about that with some bites because there’s more risk for anaphylactic shock. Te toxins may also rupture red blood cells, and this could lead to organ failure, starting with the kidneys. “But usually what you see frst is a localized swelling from the bite. It may then progress along the leg as a generalized swelling or cellulitis in the soft tissues. Te best way to treat that would be to surgically debride that area to cut out the dead tissue and get down to the healthy tissue, and clean the wound.” Snakebites often become infected, and the dying tissue makes an ideal place for bacteria to multiply. “Every animal responds diferently to the toxins,” Cope said. “Te toxin is a foreign protein, so some individuals have an allergic type of reaction. In some animals the toxins spread rapidly within the body, and in others they won’t. It’s rare to have two cases identical.” Swelling around the face/muzzle area could be so extensive that the animal can’t eat or drink. Supportive care might be necessary, such as feeding with a tube (via 36

the nostril or down the throat, depending on where the swelling is least obstructive). If the animal can’t eat or drink, you must provide fuid and nutrition a diferent way to buy some time until the swelling goes down. Your veterinarian can give advice on supportive care, as well as treatment, since each case will be a little diferent.

SNAKEBITE VACCINE

For many years a snakebite vaccine only existed for dogs. More recently a vaccine for horses has been developed to protect the horse through summer from efects of rattlesnake venom. Dose is important because you want to achieve

a high enough antibody level to protect the animal based on size. Te smaller the animal, the more it is at risk. Te recommendation when vaccinating horses is to start the frst year with three doses (a few weeks apart) and then a booster every six months if you live in areas such as certain parts of Texas and Southern California where rattlesnakes are out year-round and never go dormant. In areas where snakes are out for only a few months in summer, you give a booster once a year—about a month before snakes start coming out. Tis gives horses enough time to ramp up immunity and be fully protected by the time they might come into contact with rattlesnakes. Tis vaccine was created against venom from western diamondback rattlesnakes and is most efective against this snake’s venom. But because venom from many other rattlesnakes is similar, the vaccine might also provide protection against venoms of the prairie rattlesnake, Great Basin rattlesnake, Northern and Southern Pacifc varieties, sidewinder, timber rattlesnake, massasauga rattlesnake, and copperhead. Tis vaccine does not provide much protection against venom from water moccasins (cottonmouths), Mojave rattlesnakes, or coral snakes, however, since their venom is diferent. Dr. Jennifer Taylor is one of the researchers who helped develop the equine vaccine and get it licensed. “First we tested the dog vaccine on horses, but we had to change it a bit,” Taylor said. As part of the licensing process, this vaccine had to be shown to generate signifcant levels of protective antibodies in horses to neutralize the venom. Horses with enough antibodies experience less pain and swelling from a bite. Several factors might infuence antibody efectiveness against venomous snakebite. Tese include the snake species, age of snake, and amount of venom injected. Horse-related factors include location of the bite, how well the horse responded to the vaccine, and the length of time since the last dose of vaccine was administered. “I worked on most of the efcacy studies, where we vaccinated horses at diferent times, with difering doses, looking at

EMERGENCY USE OF BENADRYL? “Benadryl and other antihistamines have been suggested in recent years as a treatment for snakebite, but I think relying on antihistamines is a mistake,” said Dr. Robert Cope, a veterinarian in Salmon, Idaho. “There was evidence years ago that showed antihistamines can actually make the situation worse with a snakebite. I never advise using Benadryl.” Benadryl is ineffective for treating a venomous snakebite, which causes local tissue injury and cell death. That in turn causes swelling and pain due to the release of intracellular contents. The venom also causes blood vessels to “leak,” resulting in further swelling and pain as that fuid enters the tissues surrounding tissues. “Benadryl cannot counter these effects,” Cope said. “It can ease a bee sting, since bee venom causes release of histamine. But snake venom acts via different mechanisms. “To deal with the pain and swelling of a snakebite, dexamethasone is effective, and Banamine also helps. Some people use DMSO because it effectively reduces swelling very quickly.”

What we typically see is that vaccination signifcantly decreases the amount of swelling. Tis is a huge factor for a horse bitten on the nose. We’ve also found that the swelling goes down rapidly in the vaccinated horses. “When an unvaccinated animal gets bitten, swelling comes on quickly and continues for several days before it starts to resolve. Veterinarians who have dealt with animals that were vaccinated and then bitten tell us that the swelling is almost gone within 12 to 24 hours. Tere is much less swelling and pain, and less tissue damage at the site of the bite and less necrosis. “We always recommend that horse owners still treat snakebite as an emergency, even if their horses were vaccinated. Tey should still have their veterinarian administer appropriate treatment as required. Even bites by non-venomous snakes can lead to serious infections, and antibiotic treatment may be needed.”

immune responses,” Taylor said. “We followed the animals over time (to) see how long they were protected.” One of the frst tests of the vaccine was on horses at an equine sanctuary, Home at Last, in Oroville, Calif. “Tis sanctuary was willing to let us vaccinate their horses several times,” Taylor said. “We were looking at immune response, longevity of immunity, protection in older horses, etc. “One of the last things we did prior to putting it on the market was vaccinate 600 horses for the frst safety study—in addition to the 200 horses we’d vaccinated experimentally over the previous four years.” Te safety study included horses in different regions, including Southern California, Northern California, Texas, and Oklahoma, and the horses were observed daily for a week after vaccination. “Troughout that study we only had a few minor local reactions—small, temporary lumps,” Taylor said. Te Crotalus Atrox Toxoid met USDA safety standards and is considered safe for use in horses, including pregnant and lactating mares, foals as young as six months, and healthy older horses. “Our research indicates that maximum protection generated by vaccination with this product typically peaks about four to six weeks after the most recent vaccine booster dose,” Taylor said. “Protection then declines slowly over time. On average, vaccinated horses receive good protection for about six months after boostering. “When I started working on this project, I was talking to a veterinarian in his 70s. He said the frst thing he did whenever he was called to see a horse that had been bitten on the nose was try to open the airways—with whatever he had. One time he had to send the wife to the house to get her hair curlers, the pink foamy kind. He shoved the curlers into the nostrils to keep them open! I’ve heard of people using hoses and other things to stuf up the nose to enable the horse to keep breathing. But to this day I picture a horse with pink fuzzy curlers in the nostrils. Te horse survived. “For our horse vaccine, we wanted to make sure the immune response is strong. Antibodies from vaccinated animals bind to the venom. If the animal is bitten on
