A Year To Build Upon From The Executive Corner by DOUG BURGE As one can see from the cover of this December 2013 issue of our monthly California Thoroughbred magazine, the race for leading sire in the state is coming down to the wire with one month left this year. Five-time leading California stallion Unusual Heat has a narrow advantage over four-time leading California juvenile sire Tribal Rule. Regardless of the outcome, both stallions have had a remarkable year, each with more than $4.4 million in yearly progeny earnings to date. And with many races left in the month of December, either sire could surpass the $5 million mark for the year. In fact, 2013 has been a very good year for many Californiabased stallions. Fueled by higher in-state purses provided for in both the Golden State Series of stakes races and average overnight races, 20 California stallions currently have yearly progeny earnings over $1 million. Several California stallions have also sired graded stakes winners this year, including four grade I wins. In regards to the overall health of the breeding industry, we are continuing a trend of stability with the number of mares bred and resulting foal crop. Numbers recently reported by The Jockey Club, which represents roughly 90 percent of the final count of mares bred, showed that California experienced a slight drop of 3.1 percent which was lower than the total North America decline of 3.4 percent (see chart below). This number doesn’t totally equate to the following year’s expected foal crop, as several mares who were covered in other states will drop California-bred foals in 2014.

Although quantity has dropped significantly in the last 10 years, the quality of horses produced continues to improve as evidenced by the results on the track. Furthermore, restricted races continue to fill at a higher percentage than before, even with half the racing inventory now being produced. The enhancements made to the racing and incentive program over the past few years, such as the Maiden Bonus Program and Golden State Series, coupled with stability now in both the racing calendar and stabling options, have created more optimism among California’s breeders and owners. In fact, many grade I-winning stallions have recently retired to the state, along with a commitment of mare support by their owners. As racing in-state continues to be more dependent on the local product, with Cal-breds making up well over half the fields in the Golden State, this investment by breeders is vital to the long-term health of the industry. It is the mission of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) to further maximize the return and opportunities available through the incentive and racing programs. Through the support of the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC), and all the racing associations, a continued emphasis on Cal-breds will remain in place, boding well for the future stabilization and growth of the racing inventory.

A Photo Finish There is nothing more exciting in horse racing, and any other sport for that matter, than a contest coming down to a photo finish and that looks like being the case with the current battle between Unusual Heat and Tribal Rule in the race for the title of California’s leading sire of 2013. Last month, these two fine stallions traded places a number of times at the top of the rankings, separated at one point by less than $1,000, before Harris Farms’ Unusual Heat established a lead of $170,089 through Nov. 30. But with 199 runners to his name at that stage of proceedings, one cannot count out Ballena Vista Farm’s Tribal Rule from making it a close race all the way to the wire. This December 2013 issue of our monthly California Thoroughbredd magazine also covers all the excitement associated with the 30th edition of the $25 million Breeders’ Cup World Championships held at Santa Anita Park on Nov. 1-2, including the wonderful photography of Katey Barrett and Christine Atkinson. In the same vein, also covered are the respective wins by the California-bred duo of Better Bet and Swiss Lake Yodeler in the Golden State Juvenile Stakes and Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes held on the first day of this horse racing extravaganza. At the opposite end of the spectrum, we have In Memoriam tributes to Kjell Qvale and Doris Johnson, who both joined the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) in the 1960s, but then celebrate the many successes of Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, including their 2013 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (group I) winner Secret Circle, in out latest CTBA Member Profile. The three other Cal-bred stakes winners at Santa Anita in November, namely Warren’s Veneda, Tamaradno and Rousing Sermon, are also highlighted, and there’s an Industry Insight piece from Cal Poly’s Jim Ahern and Cindy Gumber titled, “State-Bred Event Days’ Effect On Attendance.” Another Man’s Treasure spotlights the Thoroughbred Classic Horse Show (TCHS) Series event at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank on Saturday, Dec. 14 and Sunday, Dec. 15, while More Megaton, who numbered a win in Santa Anita’s Malibu Stakes among his 34 starts as a three-year-old of 1963, is the latest Cal-bred to feature in A Blast From The Past. Besides our annual Equine Gift Guide, Horse Care deals with “Equine Podiatry & Therapeutic Shoeing.” There’s also a Guest Forum piece by Tom Shapiro about the December 22 closure of Betfair Hollywood Park, a location that has been a part of his family’s life for many decades, while the balance of the magazine includes all our other regular columns, features and departments that we hope will also prove to be both enjoyable and helpful. Eddington’s Secret Circle Wins Breeders’ Cup Sprint

News Bits The grade I, $1,380,000 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita Park on Nov. 2, was won by the four-year-old colt Secret Circle, a bay son of the Ballena Vista Farm stallion Eddington and the dual stakeswinning Dixieland Band mare Ragtime Hope. In only his second start since April of

2012, the 2011 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Sprint winner improved his record to seven wins, two seconds and $1,878,790 in earnings from nine starts. Eddington, a grade I-winning millionaire by Unbridled who retired to stud in 2006, relocated from Kentucky to California for the 2014 breeding season.

California-Breds Countrywide During Zia Park’s inaugural “Land of Enchantment Day” featuring four stakes races for Thoroughbreds worth nearly $700,000 in New Mexico on Nov. 27, two California-breds reached ©Coady the winner’s circle. Unusual Way In the day’s richest event, the $300,360 Zia Park Oaks at 1 1/16 miles, grade IIplaced Unusual Way won by six lengths to improve her

record to 14-5-4-1 and $588,360 in earnings. Bred by Thomas Bachman and by the Harris Farms stallion Unusual Heat, the four-time stakes winner is out of Great Above’s 1993 daughter Way Up, a multiple stakes-placed, seventime winner of $125,316. Wine Thief, a four-year-old daughter of Ballena Vista Farm’s Benchmark and unraced Malbay Slew, by French Parliamnet, was the four-length winner of the $55,180 Zia Park Distaff Stakes going six furlongs earlier in the day. She has earned $150,035 from seven wins, six seconds and four thirds in 23 starts and was bred by Robert and Eileen Osaki and Matt and Barbara Butterworth’s West 12 Ranch.

Those Grand Cal-Bred Mares In October, four runners out of California-bred mares won stakes races. On Oct.4, the grade III, $200,000 Stoll Keenon Ogen Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland in Kentucky was won for the second consecutive year by the four-year-old colt Sum of the Parts. Out of 18-year-old Enjoy the Moment, Slew’s Royalty’s multiple graded stakes-winning California champion who was bred by Jacoby Family Trust, the four-time stakes winner has earned $716,543 from a 15-6-2-0 record. At Ascot in England the following day, another son of Speightstown, the five-year-old gelding Tropics, won the John Guest Bengough Stakes to improve his record to 13-6-3-1 and $484,510 in earnings. Marathon Santa Anita Meet Opens December 26 Santa Anita Park’s next meeting will be a marathon one, following the final ever program of racing at Betfair Hollywood Park on Dec. 22, with racing at the Arcadia track scheduled from Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013 to Sunday, June 29, 2014. However, the stakes schedule that it released in November, which features 20 graded stakes among its 49 black-type races worth $10.9 million, only runs through Apr. 20.

The 69-day meet is headlined by the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap on Mar. 8, and the $1,000,000 Santa Anita Derby on Apr.5, while there are nine stakes races for runners bred or sired in California that are worth $1.55 million, including five of them to be run at California Cup XXIV/Sunshine Millions XII on Jan. 25.

Doris Johnson: Racing s “One Lucky Broad”

“Never a losing year,” she said. Not many of us can claim that. She and Tex raced horses for 50 years and had some great partners: Charlie Russell, Bob Gundersen and John Harris, just to name a few, and good horses from Little Matador to Theresa’s Tizzy. Claimers to stakes stars, they all brought home a check and they all stayed healthy. Her motto was, “Always buy Calbred.” As she told a reporter once, “Racing’s been very good to this old broad.” Well, I can tell you personally that this old broad has been very good for racing. I cherish our time together; bull sessions mostly with a lot of laughs, but more than that she was a great counselor. She never lost sight of what this game truly is and what it does to us. No matter its faults, mismanagement or dirty laundry, “It’s our game,” she would say. One day I was complaining about something and she asked me why I was still working. My answer was that I still loved it. She smiled that great smile of hers and with a poke to my chest said, “There you go kiddo, you finally figured it out.” “Truly blessed” she would say of herself. Well, Doris, your family, friends and I would all agree that we are the “blessed” ones for having had you in our lives. Dan Schiffer said it best in a letter he wrote shortly after Doris died. “She came from a golden age of horse racing and throughout represented the sport and herself with dignity and panache. Would that we all had the same passion for horses and the humans associated with them as she did, the game would be a far better place.“ Doris was a bridge from that golden age, a unique breed of the old guard that laid the corner stone of our industry. Passion, integrity and generosity were the virtues that Doris lived by. Thank you Doris for your unwavering love, enduring friendship and honest guidance. We will all miss you. ©Benoit

When the old Tanforan Racetrack reopened in 1934, it was no surprise that one of its first customers was a 14-year-old girl whose father was a veterinarian on the backside. Young Doris knew then and there that what she wanted most in life was to be a “racetracker.” It was in her blood, and it would stay there for the next 79 years. For almost 50 of these years, she worked at Bay Meadows Racecourse. From bet runner to Turf Club manager, she barely missed a day or a chance to buy stock in the track, ending up on its board of directors! My earliest memory of Doris was somewhere in the mid-’60s. I was filming a documentary for Joe Burnham Productions on Northern California racing and decided a few shots of the Bay Meadows Turf Club were what we needed. Tripod and camera over my shoulder, I started up the stairs. “Can I help you?” a voice said. There I was, face to face with Doris Johnson. The smile was there as was the twinkle in her eyes, but the rest of her face said, “You obviously don't belong here.” Sheepishly, I introduced myself and was admitted only when she discovered I was “Cecilia’s son” and therefore there had to be something redeeming about me, at least in the breeding. That was the start of a 50-year-long love affair between the Johnsons and the (De Mille) Harpers. Doris’ husband, Tex, was an oldschool hay, oats and water trainer. He was the kind of horseman you don’t see much of anymore. My mother had a number of horses with Tex and, although she thought very highly of him as a trainer, I knew it was the friendship and respect that she admired most, and Doris was easy to admire. Doris was a true defender of the game and would always say she was the luckiest gal in the whole world. Luck was an understatement.

A Heated Battle California Sires by GENE WILLIAMS Here they are, battling in their signature racing style as they head into the final days to determine who is to be California’s top stallion for 2013. One can almost imagine the words coming from Santa Anita Park’s full-throated race caller Trevor Denman: “They’re coming as one toward the finish line!” It’s that close. The equines in question are the reigning champion sire Unusual Heat and the horse that would—or could—be king, Tribal Rule. The question remains: Will it be Unusual Heat, who stands at Harris Farms in Coalinga, for the sixth consecutive year or will upstart Tribal Rule, who’s at Ballena Vista Farm in Ramona, unseat the champion? The race for stallion honors has been neck-and-neck, with the lead changing hands frequently as offspring pile up victories and earnings. Through Nov. 30, it stood this way: Unusual Heat, $4,584,389; Tribal Rule, $4,414,030. The closeness of the race was reflected in the fluctuations over a seven-day period in early November. Here’s how it progressed: Through Nov. 3, Tribal Rule led by $17,983; through Nov. 7, Unusual Heat led by $24,539; through Nov. 9, Unusual Heat led by $1,690; and through Nov. 10, Tribal Rule was back on top, but by just $806. The progeny earnings for Unusual Heat and Tribal Rule put them both in the top 50 on the general sire list. The duo were placed ahead of such superstar stallions as Bernardini, Arch, Midnight Lute, Artie Schiller and the two-time Eclipse Horse of the Year, Curlin. As for the other stallions standing in California, Eddington, who stood at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky, until moving to Ballena Vista Farm this past summer, ranked a distant third with $3,564,360. His top earner for the year is the Kentucky-bred Secret Circle, winner of the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (grade I). If numbers held the answer to winning this year’s earn-

ings race, the edge would go to Tribal Rule who, as of the end of November, had 199 starters this year to Unusual Heat’s 122. The number of winners also favors Tribal Rule with 102 on the year, compared to Unusual Heat’s 62. The latter holds an edge in stakes winners, nine to seven, but Tribal Rule has two graded stakes winners to none for Unusual Heat. Even though the numbers favor Tribal Rule over the long haul, many of Unusual Heat’s sons and daughters have placed in a number of black-type races throughout the year. Harris Auerbach, a partner with Madeline Auerbach in the Unusual Heat Syndicate who passionately tracks all the sire’s progeny, acknowledges that Tribal Rule has many more runners around “and is having a great year.” It’s not unusual, so to speak, for the reigning champion’s runners to be pursuing six-figure purses on a regular basis, the main reason that the earnings pendulum seems to swing his way. Harris Auerbach said he expects Surfcup to be Unusual Heat’s major earner for the year, but he sees four other Unusual Heat runners pushing for that spot as 2013 winds down. The quartet is He Be Fire N Ice, Starspangled Heat, Unusual Way and Gervinho. Of the four, He Be Fire N Ice and Gervinho have made the biggest news. The former won Del Mar’s California Dreamin’ Handicap prior to finishing second in the Del Mar Mile Stakes and Santa Anita’s City of Hope Mile Stakes, both grade II events. Gervinho won Del Mar’s Oceanside Stakes and finished second in a division of the Del Mar Derby (grade II) and third in Santa Anita’s Twilight Derby (grade III) . The leading earner for Tribal Rule is Ethnic Dance, whose $249,500 figure includes money earned through a victory in the other division of the Del Mar Derby.

The latter, a four-year-old colt whose grade I-winning sire, Eddington, recently relocated from Kentucky to stand at Ballena Vista Farm in Ramona, is conditioned by Baffert for his fellow California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) members Karl Watson, Mike Pegram and Paul Weitman. Also saddling Breeders’ Cup winners this year were the Southern California trainers Richard Mandella, whose Breeders’ Cup Distaff (grade I) heroine Beholder was ridden by Stevens, Doug O’Neill, who captured the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (grade I) with Goldencents and locally based jockey Rafael Bejarano, and Mike Puype, whose stable star Mizdirection defeated males in the GEICO Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (grade I) for the second straight year with Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith in the irons. Smith, the all-time leading rider of Breeders’ Cup races, brought his series tally to 20 wins with his triumphs aboard Mizdirection, Outstrip (GB) in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (grade I) and London Bridge in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon (grade II). In addition to the five races won by California-based horses, the 2013 Breeders’ Cup yielded a fair allotment of its $23 million in purse money. European runners accounted for wins in five races, while East Coast shippers collected four Breeders’ Cup trophies of their own, led by the reigning Eclipse Horse of the Year, Wise Dan, who successfully defended his 2012 title in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (grade I). In acknowledgment of its popularity as a host site, Santa Anita will become the first racetrack to conduct three consecutive editions of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships when the elite event returns to the Arcadia oval on Oct.31Nov. 1, 2014.

“Popular; I’ll help you be popular,” Kristin Chenoweth famously sang as one of the original Broadway performers in the 2004 Tony Award-winning musical “Wicked.” Last month, Chenoweth did just that when she took the stage at Santa Anita Park to sing the official theme song of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships—“The Best is Yet to Come”—as the contenders paraded to the twilight post for the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic (grade I), a $4.6 million race which brought the two-day event to a thrilling finale in front of a live, nationally televised audience when Racing Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, a 50-year-old veteran who returned from retirement earlier this year, expertly guided last year’s Classic runner-up, Mucho Macho Man, to a nose victory which established Florida-based trainer Kathy Ritvo, a heart transplant recipient, as the first female trainer to win North America’s richest horse race. It was a fitting and emotional ending for the 30th edition of the Breeders’ Cup, which debuted at Hollywood Park in 1984 and returned to Santa Anita for the seventh time and second consecutive year on Nov. 1-2, and which boasted improvements in both attendance and handle figures. Breeders’ Cup officials reported total attendance of 94,628, a five percent increase over Santa Anita’s 2012 hosting stint; meanwhile, overall handle for the 14 Breeders’ Cup races improved to $136,539,014, a seven percent boost over last year’s 15-race Breeders’ Cup showcase. Although the six California-bred runners who competed in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup races amassed no wins or placings, five horses with California connections succeeded in their respective outings. Leading the local pack this year, with victories in two Breeders’ Cup races, was Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who paired with jockey Martin Garcia for winning efforts in the

A Solid Showcase For State-Breds

by GENE WILLIAMS trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer, tracked the leaders from an up-close position that put her in a perfect spot from which to launch her winning bid in the field of 10. She took the lead at the sixteenth pole under jockey Julien Leparoux and strode home with plenty of room to spare. The victory was the second in three lifetime starts and the $110,000 winner’s portion of the purse upped her career earnings to $125,600. Larry Williams, who owns Tree Top Ranches in Parma, Idaho, a mere 40 miles from state capital Boise, acknowledged that the success of Swiss Lake Yodeler is considered somewhat of a surprise. “On the farm, she wouldn’t have been considered one of the top picks, but she certainly has turned into a nice filly; an overachiever for sure,” Williams said, who also credits Hollendorfer for some of that. “Jerry always seems to get the best out of his horses.” After giving up the lead to the winner, Moving Desert, sired by 2008 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Desert Code and bred and owned by Harris Farms in Coalinga, California, still had plenty of run left, crossing the wire 3 1/4 lengths ahead of Rovenna, bred and owned by Donald Dizney, a Floridian who breeds in the Golden State on occasion. The time for the mile was 1:37.58. Moving Desert, bred and owned by Harris Farms, once again was good enough to be runner-up but not the winner. In her six career starts, the filly has never been out of the money, finishing first once, second three times and third twice. Her maiden win came on opening day at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on July 17. It was a bit different for Better Bet, bred, owned and trained by Mike Harrington and ridden by veteran jockey Martin Pedroza. Out of the two-time winner Short Sentence, by Swiss Yodeler, he pressed the pace early from second place before taking the lead at the half-mile pole. From there, he

Though California-breds didn’t fare too well in Breeders’ Cup races over the Nov. 1-2 weekend at Santa Anita Park, a couple of California-bred juveniles had their day in the sun when two races for runneres bred or sired in California were run Nov. 1, as supporting stakes on that day’s Breeders’ Cup card. It marked the first time such restricted races were included on the Breeders’ Cup program and proved to be a solid showcase for state-breds. At a mile on the main dirt track, Swiss Lake Yodeler won the $200,500 Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes and Better Bet was victorious in the $200,250 Golden State Juvenile Stakes. The former, a daughter of Lovacres Ranch’s Swiss Yodeler, was the more emphatic winner of the two, clearing runner-up Moving Desert by 2 1/4 lengths. Better Bet, a son of Ranchio San Miguel’s Southern Image, was a half-length to the good of Electric Eddie in the Juvenile. at Harris Farms where Swiss Lake Yodeler was foaled, before moving to Lovacres for the 2013 breeding season. He has been a prolific producer of early runners and winners. In the case of Swiss Lake Yodeler, the filly not only gained early-run skills from her sire, but also from her broodmare sire Meadowlake who sired, among others, 1990 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (grade I) and Eclipse Award winner Meadow Star. Also as a broodmare sire, he’s responsible for Henny Hughes, second in the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (grade I) and sire of Beholder, winner of the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and 2013 Breeders’ Cup Distaff, both grade I events. After the race, jockey Leparoux was all smiles and praise for the winner. “She put me in the right position right away,” the rider said. “We knew she would put me on the lead or close to the pace and we were happy about that because of the way the track is playing (very fast on the day). My horse just kept on going at the end.” Trainer Hollendorfer’s take: “We just wanted to get out of the gate and on our way so we wouldn’t get too far out of it, and it worked out.” It was the first stakes outing for the filly, who became the first black-type winner for her dam Domasko Lake. Her granddam Domasco Danielle produced Delta Danielle by Lord Avie who, in turn, produced the very successful Our New Recruit, winner of the 2004 Dubai Golden Shaheen (group I).

opened a daylight lead reaching three lengths in the stretch before cashing in by a half-length in front of a closing Electric Eddie, bred and owned by Paul Reddam. Better Bet, coming off a seventh-place finish in Santa Anita’s FrontRunner Stakes (grade I), was dismissed at 47-1 odds and paid his backers a whopping $96.00 to win. The victory was worth $110,000 and sent his career earnings to $190,130 from a record of two wins, a second and a third from nine starts. Pedroza apparently did his homework well because after the race he said, “I watched the tape of his last race. . .and I could see he got forced out really wide on the first turn. He was out toward the middle of the racetrack and you could see that he didn’t run that bad. I wanted to get him into the race and we were able to save ground pretty good into the first turn. When I asked him, he gave me everything he had.” Trainer Harrington had this to say: “I knew Martin fit the horse to a tee. . .I’m not sure it was that important to get in front today because the horse is tactical. . .Like all horse races, things just had to turn out right. Fortunately, in a $200,000 race, things turned out right.” The victory was the first black-type earned for the broodmare, Short Sentence, who resides at Lovacres Farm. Better Bet is her second foal. Tamarando, bred and owned also by the Williamses and winner of the Sept. 4 Del Mar Futurity (grade I), finished another length back in third. The time was 1:37.53. Tamarando was foaled at Harris Farms. Over the two races, Harrington had to feel quite a bit of pride, even though winning only one of the two. As noted, the broodmare of his winner was sired by Swiss Yodeler and the victorious filly was also by Swiss Yodeler. Why would that make Harrington proud? Consider that Harrington trained and raced Swiss Yodeler for long-time client Heinz Steinmann, sending the fine runner out to post a record of six wins, a second and eight thirds in 24 career starts from the ages of two to five. His purse earnings hit $761,442, with $617,200 coming as a juvenile. Harrington has trained numerous Swiss Yodeler progeny over the years. The horse retired to stud in 1999, standing

the highly-ranked Wildcats will make another big run during March Madness. Secret Circle served as a good advertisement for California breeding as the first grade I winner by his sire, Eddington, who will stand his first season in this state next year. The 12-year-old son of Unbridled was moved from Claiborne Farm in Kentucky to Ballena Vista Farm in Ramona and will stand for a $3,500 fee. Watson and Weitman have also become more directly involved with California since they retired Coil to stud at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez at the beginning of the year. In partnership with Pegram, the pair transferred four broodmares from Kentucky who were bred to Coil, who was booked to 77 mares in his first year. His stud fee will remain at $5,000. “We have a sire and broodmares in California and we race in California,” said Watson of the duo’s decision to join the CTBA this year. The pair own about 55 horses, all but half a dozen in partnership with Pegram, and are looking to devote more time to their favorite hobby. Both are delegating more responsibilities in their car dealerships to family members. Watson, 63, is turning over more work to sons Joe and Bo and son-in-law Francisco DelBosque in his Chevrolet and Infiniti operations. Weitman, 70, is likewise handing over more duties to sons Neal and Craig in his Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Mini Cooper, Range Rover, Kia, Lexus and Jaguar businesses. They both want to see more speed from four legs than four wheels. Watson, a Kansas City native, recalled becoming a fan during the late 1970s at Ak-Sar-Ben in Nebraska, where he “got the horse-racing bug.” Weitman became infected later after befriending Baffert’s brother, Bill, who introduced him to the trainer. “They invited me to the Kentucky Derby in 1996, when (Cal-bred) Cavonnier ran second to Grindstone in a photo finish,” said Weitman. “That’s when I got Derby Fever. When I came home, I said, ‘Get me a horse.’” That started the dream ride. Weitman said the success formula has been relatively simple. “Bobby is the coach, and we let him coach,” said Weitman. ”We have a great trainer, have a great partnership and have had some good luck.”

Midnight Lute to stud at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Kentucky, where he will stand for a $25,000 fee next year. During the same two years as Midnight Lute’s biggest wins, Watson and Weitman also enjoyed the prowess of Tough Tiz’s Sis, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Cal-bred star Tiznow. She won a pair of grade I stakes, the 2007 Lady’s Secret Stakes and 2008 Ruffian Handicap, and finished a creditable second to Zenyatta in the 2008 Vanity Handicap (grade I) while earning $903,792. The pair retained ownership of Tough Tiz’s Sis after retirement to the broodmare ranks at Hill ‘n’ Dale, where she is in foal to Midnight Lute for the third time. Da Stoops, Midnight Lute and Tough Tiz’s Sis only opened the floodgates. The racing gods continued to smile upon the triumvirate with Lookin At Lucky, an Eclipse Award winner in both 2009 and 2010. He won five grade I stakes, including the 2010 Preakness Stakes, at two and three and earned $3,307,278 before being sold privately for stallion duties. He stands at Ashford Stud in Kentucky. The trio’s cup continued to flow over with the likes of: Drill, winner of the 2011 Del Mar Futurity (grade I); Coil, winner of the 2011 Haskell Invitational Stakes (grade I) and 2012 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (grade I); and Executiveprivilege, winner of the 2012 Del Mar Debutante Stakes (grade I), as well as Chandelier Stakes (grade I) and an Eclipse Award runner-up. The beat went on this year with victories by Fiftyshadesofhay in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (grade II) and Midnight Lucky in the Acorn Stakes (grade I), setting the table for a score by Secret Circle in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, their third in that race. “That’s actually our fourth win in a Breeders’ Cup sprint,” said Watson, citing a victory by Secret Circle in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint. “Bobby’s pretty much got us spoiled,” said Watson after his most recent taste of heaven. “The bar is set pretty high.” Both used the word “blessed” to describe their good fortune. Weitman said he will never get tired of the thrill of victory. “It always feels good to win a big race,” he said. “There is nothing like winning. I don’t care if it’s a Breeders’ Cup race or the NCAA basketball championship.” Weitman cheered Arizona to that title in 1997, and is optimistic that

Homebred Highs At Hollywood Park

I think the farther the better with her.” A Weekend Williams Sweep With his victory in the non-restricted Real Quiet Stakes worth $100,750 on Nov. 23, Tamarando became the first of two Larry and Marianne Williams homebreds to win stakes races within a period of less than 24 hours. A two-year-old son of pensioned Bertrando, the dark bay or brown colt increased his bankroll to $495,595 from three wins, a second and two thirds in seven trips to post. Ridden exclusively by Julien Leparoux in his previous starts, Tamarando’s win by 3 1/4 lengths in 1:44.22 for the 1 1/16-mile main track trip came with Rafael Bejarano in the irons. From post position six, the 5-2 second wagering choice closed from last in the field of eight to make up as much as 10 lengths with a four-wide bid that defeated fellow Cal-bred Electric Eddie, bred and owned by Paul Reddam. Karma King finished a further three quarters of a length behind in third, ahead of the 6-5 race favorite Green Mask. On the all-weather Cushion Track surface at Betfair Hollywood Park in Inglewood last month, a trio of runners foaled in California each earned $60,000 for winning stakes races in the silks of their breeders. She’s Only Just Begun On Nov. 17, the 17th edition of the $100,000 Cat’s Cradle Handicap, for fillies and mares three-year-old and up bred or sired in the Golden State, was won by Warren’s Veneda, a Benjamin Warren homebred. By Affrimative, a resident of Farrell W. Jones Thoroughbred Farm, this sophomore filly justified her 3-5 favoritism in the five-strong field of black-type winners with a three quarters of a length victory over Curvy Cat, bred and owned by Tommy Town Thoroughbreds. Finishing a further 5 1/4 lengths back in third was frontrunner Sister Kate followed by another Cal-bred in Qiaona, while the grade II-winning Kentucky-bred Ciao Bella Luna completed the order of finish. The final time for 7 1/2 furlongs on the main track was 1:29.72. With Joe Talamo aboard, the Craig Lewis trainee raced in third after jumping from the inside post position before taking the lead in mid-stretch for a triumph that improved her record to 10-5-1-2 and $282,064 in earnings. The chestnut filly only began her racing career in April of this year, winning that same month’s $62,000 Alphabet Kisses Stakes at Hollywood Park prior to three stakes placings since. Against seven fellow Cal-breds, the bettors’ 2-1 second choice broke from the inside post position before racing wide on both the backstretch and the turn in this 7 1/2-furlong test. After taking the lead in the lane, Rousing Sermon posted a winning time of 1:29.73 in a 1 1/4-length win over the 8-5 favorite Cyclometer who finished a further 2 1/2 lengths clear of Mobilized. State-Bred Event Days’ Effect On Attendance & On-Track Wagering

by JIM AHERN & CYNTHIA GUMBER (CAL POLY) A continuing research project at Cal Poly SLO is looking at the impacts of state-bred or state-restricted race “event days” on race day attendance and on-track wagering. The first such effort focused on the California state-bred racing event days (SBED), California Cup, California Gold Rush and Sunshine Millions at Santa Anita Park and Betfair Hollywood Park. A more recent effort expands the data set to include other such events from around the country, including Empire Classics, Minnesota Championships, Florida’s Sunshine Millions, Maryland Millions, etc. Data analyzed in this project was collected from numerous sources including the Daily Racing Form, Equibase, and individual racetrack and state-bred organization websites. Through the first effort of the project SBED race charts were collected for the years 2009-2011. The data set was expanded through the recommendation of the use of Equibase Historical Results page, which facilitated and granted access to historical race charts.

Information was recorded for individual race days or race cards for the annual events and also for the same racing day of the week for the week before and the week after the SBED. The sample is approaching 190 race days with a goal of including all such programs available in the United States and Canada. Some racing calendar idiosyncrasies make required adjustments such as a SBED falling on the opening or closing weekend of a race meet, which has occurred in several states (e.g., Minnesota and Texas). In such cases, we used the two following weeks or the two preceding weeks’ cards unless another track was operating in the same urban market area (e.g., California (Santa Anita and Hollywood Park) and New York). Preliminary results show that the “event days” generally appear to outperform the control days, as suggested in Table 1 below. SBED on average have better numbers in many categories, including all sources wagers ($1,000), attendance on track, purses ($1,000), runners/race, and total runners.

One way of separating the “test events” (SBED days) from nearby “control” (same track week before or after SBED) observations is to execute an analysis of variance (ANOVA) process which studies the behavior of people and whether or not it is the same depending on certain factors. This method calculates the averages for both the test and control race days. The basic hypothesis or idea is that if SBED’s increase attendance and wagering then their means will be either equal to or greater than the controls, and verifiable by statistical test. When the mean of the SBED is separated from the mean of SBED there will be a numerical difference, seen below in attendance (Table 3). The key point being that the means of the test and control in the previous ANOVA were statistically different which in turn means that attendance on SBED days was greater (recognizable by non-statistician/ analyst). Attendance averaged over 10,000 per SBED (for 26 of these events) and a lower 6,900 attendance average for the proximal or nearby weeks’ open race or non-STBD race cards. This is nearly a 50 percent (45 percent) increase over the open race days for the same day of the week the week before and the week after.

The ANOVA test enabled us to determine there was a statistical difference in the means of the controls and the test days. To enhance the understanding of why the difference was occurring Ordinarily Least Squares regression models were run. In conclusion, the regression model determined, that attendance is effected by the number or runners/race (full fields), the quality of horses attracted by bigger prize money or purses, adverse weather days, concurrent running of big races elsewhere (such as Triple Crown or Breeders’ Cup events), holiday racing, if the racing venue changes location, and lastly big racing states with nexus of a large racing community, both horsemen and fans (much like business strategist Michael Porter’s industrial clusters of Silicon Valley or New York’s financial district).

Conclusions

The effects for the various racing states were dependent on each market’s location and size, the size of the racing and breeding programs, but an overall increase in attendance and wagering on state-bred event days was apparent. In overall on-track wagering, California and New York’s state-bred programs were significantly larger. These states displayed increases in on-track wagering when considered against the control observations (race days) the same day of the week before and week after the events. The attendance responses show increased attendance on SBED and specifically in the states of California and New York. Runners per race, purse amount, condition of the track, and other major races occurring on the day had effects on the number of patrons attending as well. While states with prominent racing programs experienced increases in attendance and wagering on these event days, substantial improvements in the state bred race programs in other states occurred. Local racing stars often stay at home and develop a following in their local markets, while major national stars often shun these smaller market locations. Several states seem to be shifting from a state-bred program to a combination of state-bred and state-sired programs.

Thoroughbred Classic Horse Show Series To Crown First Champions

While Lava Man and Mr. Wolverine are uncertain, another gelding has received the green light for his showing debut— Kinsale King. The eight-year-old millionaire is best known for his victory in the group I, $2,000,000 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan Racecourse in 2010. He retired from racing in June and worked as trainer Carl O’Callaghan’s stable pony for one month before entering show training with Jane E. Steiner at TLC Riding Center in Norco. Steiner trains and rides hunter/jumpers, including TCHS competitors Sarafan, a grade I winner, and Fighting Furrari, one of the stars of the 2003 film “Seabiscuit.” O’Callaghan himself will ride Kinsale King over jumps in the Trainer and Jockey Calcutta, a new event created to help bridge the gap between the racetrack and show arena. In another nod to racing, spectators will be able to “bet” their favorite horse or rider, with half of the pool donated to the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA). O’Callaghan said he entered Kinsale King in jump training to ward off boredom and to showcase him in a different way. “I'm just looking to go out there with a smile and let ‘King’ and I enjoy ourselves and show the people that it’s okay to have a horse off the track,” O’Callaghan said. In addition to the Calcutta, there will be a wide variety of dressage, showjumping and hunter/jumper classes, as well as more unique contests such as western pleasure and egg-andspoon races. Series point champions will be crowned in three marquee events—the Hess Equine Hunter Derby, Santa Anita Park Jumper Stakes and Schroeder Farms English & Western Dressage Challenge—each with a $1,500 purse.

The Thoroughbred Classic Horse Show (TCHS) presented by Siegel-CARMA will crown champions of its inaugural series on Dec. 14-15 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank. The first and second legs of the three-part competition were held in April and July at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano. “I think we’re all proud as to what’s been accomplished thus far,” said Nicole Schwartz, founder and event director of the TCHS series. “It’s going to be a festive, fun and phenomenal weekend, and we’ll truly celebrate the athleticism, spirit and versatility of the Thoroughbred.” Liberian Freighter, a multiple graded stakes-winning California-bred gelding, was among the winners in the first show and will shoot for more ribbons for new connections. Two stars of the second TCHS round, Cal-bred geldings Lava Man and Mr. Wolverine, could renew their rivalry in Burbank. Lava Man, a multiple grade I winner and two-time California Horse of the Year, won the Spirit of a Winner and War Horse Showmanship classes in his show ring debut. He may take a short jaunt north from Betfair Hollywood Park, where he works as trainer Doug O’Neill’s stable pony, to defend his title in the former class. If Lava Man doesn’t attend, handler Sommer Smith said she wants to bring Cal-bred gelding Texcess in his stead. It would be the 2004 California Champion Two-Year-Old Male’s first time away from the farm since he was retired with a life-threatening stifle fracture in 2007. Smith and husband Dave Showalter foaled Texcess and have cared for him since his retirement at their NexStar Ranch in Temecula. Runner-up to Lava Man in the Spirit of a Winner class in July was Mr. Wolverine, who defeated Lava Man in the

More Megaton: Quantity & Quality

by JACKIE BARNES On Thursday Dec. 26, glorious Santa Anita Park springs to life as it begins is 77th Winter/Spring meeting of racing at its oval in Arcadia. The traditional opening day feature, the grade I Malibu Stakes, has a rich history of being one of the great late season races. Past winners of the seven-furlong event include such Hall of Fame runners as Round Table, Damascus and Buckpasser, along with California-breds Native Diver and Ancient Title. Saturday, Dec. 28 will mark the 50th anniversary of Cal-bred More Megaton’s thrilling victory in the 1963 Malibu Stakes. This dark bay or brown colt was foaled on no less than April Fools Day, April 1, 1960, at the home of his breeder, the J R K Ranch in Monrovia. As More Megaton grew, he showed talent as he progressed toward his two-year-old season. He proved to be a durable runner as he won or placed five times at two, including a third-placed finish in the San Gabriel Valley Stakes at Pomona. Trained by Jimmy Wallace, More Megaton begain his three-year-old season at Santa Anita where he posted backto-back wins on Jan. 29 and Feb. 9. Following four dismal starts he was moved south to the Agua Caliente racktrack in Tijuana. More Megaton took to his new surroundings, winning the $5,555 Baja California Handicap by a half-length in a quick 1:09 4/5 for the six furlongs. He followed this victory with three more wins in a row which culminated in his being named Horse of the Meeting. From mid-May through July, More Megaton had an uneventful Hollywood Park meeting. It wasn’t until his second-placed finish in the $22,325 Del Mar Derby to Olympiad King that he sprang to life. In September, racing moved to Pomona where More

Megaton had been successfull as a juvenile. He won a hardfought victory over Nevada Battler in the $10,825 Pomona Derby at 1 1/16 miles on Sept. 25. More Megaton returned three days later, to defeat older horses in the $22,700 Pomona Handicap. Based on these performances, he was awarded Horse of the Meeting honors. Wallace then moved him north to the San Francisco area for what would be a series of successful stakes races. It begain with a victory in the $16,800 San Francisco Handicap at Tanforan on Oct. 12. More Megaton then won the $11,650 Albany Handicap at Golden Gate Fields on Nov. 2, and the $10,825 Berkeley Handicap on Nov. 28. That would set him up perfectly for the $30,300 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita. An enormous field of 16 runners made up the field for the 13th running of the prestigious race. Heading up the field were the stakes winners Viking Spirit and B. Major. It was a ding-dong battle right from the start, with Viking Spirit in the lead. He tired coming to the stretch where More Megaton was beginning to roll from behind. He took the lead to win by a head over Legation and Quita Dude. By season’s end, he had started 34 times with 12 wins, six seconds and a third for earnings of $93,480. At four, More Megaton won two races, including a repeat victory in the $22,550 Pomona Handicap. While at five, he twon twice and finished third in two stakes races. More Megaton retired to stud at the Old English Rancho of his owners, Mr. and Mrs. Ellwood B. Johnston. He stood there from 1965 to 1970, then moved to Mexico in 1971. He sired many winners there, including champions Aparecida (Mex), Maltesa (Mex) and More Victory (Mex). In the United States, he also sired the stakes winner We’re Ready Now ($179,693) and the stakes-placed winners More Distance, Acknowledge Me, Mr. Powerful and Balance Forward. More Megaton’s sire The Pie King (GB) was the champion two-year-old colt in England during 1953, and was also a winner in the United States. He sired many stakes winners, including Real Good Deal ($298,762), Real Sweet Deal and Schatzi Pie. Skylair, the dam of More Megaton, was a winner of $18,610 and finishing second in the Junior League Stakes and third in the La Centinela Stakes. The daughter of leading California sire Khaled (GB) produced six other winners, including stakes victors Madam Gaylady and Bloomer Girl. More Megaton was a hard knocking individual who over the course of his racing career gave us many heart stopping finishes. California’s racing and breeding history are enriched through his contributions to the sport. His career totals were 97-17-15-7 for earnings of $160,280.

Equine Podiatry & Therapeutic Shoeing

by HEATHER SMITH THOMAS Podiatry is the specialized field that deals with the study and care of the foot, utilizing knowledge of anatomy, pathology, medical and surgical treatment. This is a relatively new field in veterinary medicine; equine podiatrists must be farriers and veterinarians—focusing on the equine foot and how to address its various ailments. Much of what a podiatrist does is therapeutic shoeing. Therapeutic shoeing refers to the various methods and technology utilized to help a hoof recover from injury or some other medical problem or functional impairment. In these situations, a veterinarian and a farrier (or a podiatrist who specializes in both fields) will generally be involved with caring for that foot. Scott Morrison, DVM, head of the podiatry department at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, is one of the first equine clinics to initiate this type of program. Morrison became a farrier more than 25 years ago and later became a veterinarian. “Dr. Rick Redden was probably the first veterinarian who focused on podiatry; he was the pioneer of this field,” says Morrison. “Our clinic was probably the first to take podiatry interns and make it a curriculum and incorporate it into our veterinary practice,” he says. “What we do is rehabilitate feet or resolve foot problems. The majority of our work is with lame feet and serious foot problems that may have limited the horse’s career, or problems that might be life threatening,” explains Morrison.

“We have rehabilitated feet that owners and trainers thought were hopeless; we try to get them back to where the horse is sound again. Much of our work deals with chronic foot problems but we work on critical cases as well, such as laminitis, infections or traumatic injuries to the foot,” he says. His associate, Dr. Vern Dryden, says their podiatry clinic mainly deals with Thoroughbreds, because they make up the majority of horses in their area. “The most common ailment we see in our practice is laminitis, followed by palmar heel pain (navicular syndrome). We also see a lot of foot infections, anything from an abscess to an infected coffin bone, to a puncture wound or septic bursa or coffin joint. We also see a lot of white line disease and thrush, and a few cases of canker. We deal with many toe and quarter cracks, repairing and shoeing these,” he says. “We’ve tried to design a podiatry clinic that could deal with any type of foot problem,” says Morrison. “Farriers and veterinarians refer horses to us. Often farriers and veterinarians work together to resolve foot problems, but sometimes it takes a specialist, someone who works on those problems all the time, to do it proficiently and effectively,” explains Morrison. “We keep the farrier in the loop, especially with be a long-term problem where the farrier will eventually be taking care of the foot again,” he says. The farrier may have to shoe that horse in a certain way for a while, or maybe for the rest of the horse’s life, depending on the situation. “Some chronic problems require constant care from then on. In really critical cases, we just take the case until we get the horse straightened out,” says Morrison. Rood and Riddle has been on the forefront of new developments in treatment and shoeing, utilizing new types of shoes and specialty ways to shoe some of the problem horses. “People send us prototypes of different shoes and ask us to try them and use them, and we test and develop many shoeing techniques,” says Dryden. Today, more veterinarians are becoming interested in farriery, and more farriers are going to vet school. “An increasing number of vet students visit us. There is a huge interest in seeing what we do here,” says Dryden. “We are constantly learning, and doing things differently,” says Morrison. “The way we do things now is a lot different from how we did them five or six years ago; we are constantly finding new ways to treat problems. It’s a new field, always in flux,” he says. Continued on page 66

Horse Care Cont’d. “We are also rediscovering some of the old techniques that can still be useful. What we do is a combination of rediscovering old techniques and coming up with new ones— finding what works best for the horse,” says Morrison. It’s a big advantage to start out as a farrier and then go to vet school. “It’s tougher if you go through vet school and then decide to get into podiatry,” says Dryden. “It’s tough to do the type of jobs you need to be able to do, if you don’t have the farriery background. You have to earn the respect of the farrier community, as well. It’s hard to break into that unless you’ve been a farrier, too. Then they are more willing to listen to you. You’ll have more credibility, in their eyes,” says Dryden. “Being a farrier first is good background for anyone going into podiatry, because you’ll have seen a lot of feet. It is crucial to know what normal is, before you start dealing with abnormal. It’s important to be able to visualize what the normal foot should be—so you can help a diseased foot get back into a normal situation,” he explains. Podiatry can do much more for certain foot problems than either the veterinarian or the farrier can do alone. “Veterinarians come from one background and farriers from another, and often when treating a problem they disagree or don’t understand each other,” says Morrison. “We now have veterinarian-farrier conferences—so they are getting the same information. Then when they have to work together it’s a lot easier,” he says. The team effort is very important. Many veterinarians are not comfortable working with feet, so it is important that they use farriers as part of the team. It is most beneficial to the horse if the veterinarian and farrier can work together rather than against one another. They can accomplish much more, together. “Most lameness issues are in the feet,” says Morrison. “It’s hard to effectively remedy some of these problems if your horseshoer is primarily accustomed to working on normal feet, with maintenance shoeing. And a veterinarian is generally not confronted with hoof problems. The veterinarian and farrier can sometimes work together effectively, but in many instances you need a specialist to consult or to treat these problems,” he explains. “We are bridging the gap between them, but there is a need for veterinarians specializing in podiatry. If a veterinarian deals with certain types of cases only once every couple of years, he/she is not as comfortable treating these,” says Morrison. The podiatrist is more proficient when working with foot problems all the time. Advances In Therapeutic Shoeing Many of the things we are able to do today to help correct/heal hoof problems and feet/leg problems are the result of space-age technology and new materials, such as glue-on shoes and gels/foams for cushioning. Yet many of the “new” ideas in shoe design are old ones that are simply being rediscovered, according to Pat Reilly (Chief of Farriery Services, New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania).

“We have a large collection of shoes and specimens of horse’s feet (that came from Germany) that go back to the 1880s, when the vet school here at the University of Pennsylvania was founded. Some of the new ideas used today, such as banana shoes, are not new. They are at least 150 years old. There are also some old shoes that look like our new natural balance shoes, and some ‘air pads’ from 1899. Many of the ‘new’ shoes are just recycled ideas. Glue-on shoes are one of the truly new things in use today,” says Reilly. One of the main things helping farriers/veterinarians/ podiatrists today is better technology for diagnosing some of the foot problems. Often there is need for an accurate diagnosis before a specific trim/shoe can be prescribed to help a foot heal or come back to normal. Any problem in the foot needs to be properly identified. If there is no diagnosis, you are shooting in the dark. Teaming up with veterinary expertise, and in some cases using diagnostic imaging, is important. Travis Burns, lecturer and farrier at Virginia Tech (VirginiaMaryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine), says sometimes you need diagnostic imaging to know exactly what is going on in the foot. “Diagnostic imaging continues to improve (with use of MRI, venograms, thermography, bone scan, CT scan, etc.). In years past we were diagnosing things we thought might be a problem but we weren’t sure—and therefore didn’t have enough guidelines for correcting the problem,” says Burns. “For instance, collateral ligament injuries were not readily diagnosed; this has changed just in the past dozen years. These were not heard of earlier, and now we are making hand-made shoes, penciled-down branches, etc., to deal with these problems. As long as diagnostics continue to improve, we will come up with more solutions,” he says. Continued on page 68

There are many things we can do now, like glue-on shoes (that can support the foot without the trauma of using nails), that we couldn’t do before and there will be other innovations. “As farriers become more educated our techniques should become better and better,” says Burns. Therapeutic shoeing is on the cutting edge of trying to figure out better ways to try to help horses. “Trying is the key word, here. Most of us are still flying by the seat of our pants, hoping we are doing the right thing for the horse,” he says. Importance Of Communication Therapeutic shoeing must be a team effort with the farrier, veterinarian (or podiatrist) and horse owner/trainer working together. Everyone needs to have a clear idea about what the problem is, and what the proposed treatment/management plan will be. There are several key ingredients that go into making management decisions, and certain things the owner and trainer need to understand. There’s also a certain amount of commitment needed, because in many situations it will be a long-term process. Without the care and commitment of the person caring for the horse, the plan may fail. A positive or negative outcome will depend on this commitment. The average hoof grows approximately a quarter-inch per month so it may take fair amount of time involved to remedy the problem. With therapeutic shoeing there are often two expectations. One is the short-term fix (like a bandaid) and the other is long-term—getting the horse back to normal, if possible. For example, if the farrier or podiatrist is dealing with a quarter crack and the horse is just a few days away from competing in a major race, he may be able to safely compete if temporary stabilization of the crack can be accomplished. After that, you are looking at a long-term program in which it might be necessary to change a multitude of things. This may include rest, to allow the hoof to grow and to repair itself. The farrier may also have to make adjustments in foot balance. The owner/trainer—with the help of the farrier/veterinarian—can look at some of these problems in terms of a proposed short-term solution, versus a long-term solution. In both cases, each plan has to be done with the safety and welfare of the horse in mind. The owner/trainer may have to scrap a certain schedule for competition. This is where communication becomes very important, so everyone is on the same page regarding the treatment/management plan.

Say Goodbye To Hollywood Guest Forum by TOM SHAPIRO In 1952, when I was two years old, I was lucky enough to name a weanling filly by the legendary Triple Crown winner Count Fleet. Blue One was her name and she also had the significance of being the first foal my grandparents ever bred. We both made our first start at Hollywood Park a couple of years later. It was a day of firsts. She was in the first race of the day, it was her first start, my first time at Hollywood Park, the first horse my family bred and, yes, our first visit to the winner’s circle! If there was a first family of Hollywood Park, perhaps our family would be one of the nominations. Most everyone in racing remembers us and especially my grandparents Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Shapiro as the breeders and owners of the great Native Diver. Nicknamed “The Black Horse,” Native Diver was the second California-bred (Swaps being the first) inducted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame. Some of my fondest memories include the great match race when “The Diver” with Jerry Lambert defeated Viking Spirit with Kenny Church to equal the world record at seven furlongs. There were so many great races and, of course, he was the first horse to win the Hollywood Gold Cup more than once and set the record of three wins that has never been broken (tied by Cal-bred Lava Man in 2007). Of the three Gold Cup victories, perhaps the most emotional was the last one in 1967. The Diver was seven years old and no longer at his peak. He was coming into the race after being soundly defeated by Pretense in the American Handicap, which at the time was the prep race for the Gold Cup. Bion Abbott of the L.A. Times and especially George Main of the Herald Examiner wrote some harsh articles criticizing us for running him when they thought he had proven enough and should be retired. What they underestimated was his great trainer Buster Millerick. Buster trained him up to the Gold Cup and had him as tight and fit as any horse could ever be for a particular race. The Black Horse went out and won in 1:58 4/5, trouncing Pretense and avoiding O’Hara, a loose horse, who had lost his rider at the start. I spent a summer at Hollywood Park working for Buster as a hot walker, groom and part-time pony boy. There was also “Doc” his part dingo dog. Anyone who attempted to look at Buster’s training schedule was likely to shortly thereafter need the veterinarian Dr. Jack Robbins to tend to the consequences. It was an era where horsemen were celebrities with trainers such as Millerick, Charlie Whittingham and Farrell Jones. Riders such as the incomparable Bill Shoemaker, Johnnie Longden, Ralph Neves and the young Panamanian new comer Laffit Pincay Jr., all of whom were rock stars of their time. Ironically, Laffit would ride our horse Calkins Road to victory in the Snow Chief Stakes some 30 years later. Known as “The Track of the Lakes and Flowers,” it drew the largest attendance of any racetrack in the nation with

over 50,000 fans on any given Saturday. Hollywood Park was a major event with pomp and circumstance, celebrities and major media coverage. The Saturday feature race was broadcast live on CBS with Gil Stratton. There was no Sunday racing. Hollywood Park and the Shapiro family is more than just Native Diver and some other pretty good stakes winners, such as Azure Te and Fast Dish. These were the days prior to graded stakes races. My grandfather was a founder of Western Harness Racing which brought harness racing to California and Hollywood Park as well as Santa Anita Park in the 1950s. Western Harness Racing ran a fall meet at Hollywood Park when Thoroughbred racing meets were active in Northern California. Racing meets were exclusive and didn’t overlap one another. My father, Marvin Shapiro, became President of Western Harness Racing which officed at Hollywood Park and, in the early 1970s, changed the landscape of California racing. Through his efforts and influence, he was successful in getting the California law changed to allow for night racing. Shortly thereafter, lights were installed at Hollywood Park and night racing was introduced. Such legendary Standardbreds such as Albatross, Niatross and Cardigan Bay (who would fall asleep in the paddock just before going onto the track), among others, travelled to California to race. Under my father’s leadership, Western Harness Racing introduced exotic wagering (previously only the daily double for the first and second race on a race card existed), such as quinellas and exactas. Small televisions were first installed in the Turf Club at each table, while concerts and promotional days were also introduced. Continued on next page

Guest Forum Cont’d. The third generation of Shapiro’s has continued our relationship with the track, now Betfair Hollywood Park. I continued the involvement from the racing aspect. It began with becoming a licensed owner-driver-trainer and racing Standardbreds at Hollywood Park for several years. My wife Debbie and I shared our first six dates at Hollywood Park and when my father introduced her to her long-time crush Fred Astaire, he cinched the deal for me. Now (many many years later), we are local Thoroughbred breeders and owners and have horses stabled at Hollywood Park. Sharing Sunday mornings at Hollywood Park with my kids has been another great experience, including the time John Shirreffs let my daughter ride his pony horse Winston. We’re proud to have bred and raced Calkins Road, the 2002 California Champion Three-YearOld Male, and some other good horses. My brother Richard worked at Western Harness Racing and later became Chairman of the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB). Through the years, there have been many changes at the track. Originally, the saddling paddock was in front of the grandstand and the current winner’s circle was exclusive to major Saturday stakes races. There was a smaller winner’s circle off the main track for overnight races. Changes to the

racing surface itself was certainly a major issue. Many years ago there was a pool on the backside for the horses and even the finish line was changed when the Hollywood Park Casino was built. Management regimes changed too. From the steady Jim Stewart to the controversial Marge Everett to R. D. Hubbard to Churchill Downs and finally to Jack Liebau and The Bay Meadows Land Company, Hollywood Park continued to be a leading national racetrack. It’s hard to believe we’ve reached Hollywood Park’s finish line. I remember announcer Harry Henson’s “and there they go” and will miss Vic Stauffer’s great stretch calls. There are no words to express my sadness and disappointment. From a track that represented Hollywood itself, filled with stars, celebrities and racing lore, to a multi-use development? No more Goose Girl, just a goose or, better yet, an ugly duckling! If there’s one last win for Hollywood Park I hope it’s the lesson we can learn. We have too many racing factions. It’s time for transparency and for everyone to work together (owners, trainers, track management, breeders, racing associations, Advance Deposit Wagering networks). Racing needs to protect the future of our sport. Hopefully racing can reinvent itself, develop a new fan base, fix the economics of horse ownership, and secure the racing facilities for the future. Sadly, I will never again feel the excitement as I drive down Century Boulevard going to my favorite place.
