Important Legislation In 2011
From the Executive Corner
by BOB FOX The deadline for bill introduction was Friday Feb. 18, and there were over 800 bills introduced that day. While it appears that there are fewer bills than normal, primarily because of the budget crisis, there are still over 2,400 of them. Bills that contain significant costs to either state or local government will be very difficult to get passed and if they pass, they are very likely to face a Governnor’s veto. Shown below are the details of the bills that have been identified so far, which are of interest or concern to the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA). Many of them are “spot bills” which means that they were introduced to meet the deadline, but will be amended as the final language is developed by the author and sponsor. The bills are listed in three catagories: CTBA Bills; these bills include several related to fairs, internet gambling and animal abuse. Horse Racing Bills; these bills are directly related to horse racing and include bills on satellite wagering, pari-
mutuel tickets, funding for offsite stabling and problem gambling. Williamson Act Bills; there are five bills that have been introduced that relate to the Williamson Act. Since the funding for the Williamson Act appears to have been eliminated by both the Assembly and Senate Budget Committees, there may be more bills introduced to try to restore that funding. It will be very difficult to pass a bill with funding and it is almost sure that the Governor will veto it, unless he can be convinced that the Williamson Act is worth saving. Some of the bills have been referred to their first policy committee, but none have been set for hearing at this point. The CTBA will be meeting with the representatives of the other racing organizations to discuss the bills and to learn more about who are the sponsors and the intent of each of the bills. As more information becomes available, we will keep the CTBA membership informed.

Managing Editor’s Welcome
The Dedication To Succeed Gracing the cover of this March 2011 edition of our California Thoroughbred magazine is Evening Jewel, the 2010 California Champion Three-Year-Old Female and Horse of the Year who has proved to have the dedication to succeed, just like all of last year’s other California-bred champions (The Usual Q. T., Unzip Me, Caracortado, Cost of Freedom, Bench Points and California Nectar) also featured in this issue. Such devotion to a specific purpose is a worthy trait also found among the staff members of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA), especially those in the Publications Department. They work tirelessly on a regular basis to produce such quality products as our website, weekly newsletter, monthly magazine, and annual stallion and industry directories. My own daily responsibilities are made all that much easier by this dedication to succeed shown by our Advertising Manager, Loretta Veiga, and the two stalwarts of our Art Room, John Melanson and Charlene “Charlie” Favata. I would also like to acknowledge all of our freelance contributors, specifically Emily Shields who is the primary writer for the magazine, for their continuously tremendous work ethic. This current issue features additional examples of achieving success through dedication in the form of editorials highlighting both the CTBA’s Annual Awards Dinner, including coverage of the 2011 inductees to the association’s Hall of Fame, and the ninth edition of Sunshine Millions, the latter of which details the exploits of the three Cal-breds (Amazombie, Caracortado and Evening Jewel) who swept the Santa Anita Park portion of this annual $1.8 million series this year. Our latest CTBA Member Profile spotlights Mike Machowsky, the breeder, co-owner and trainer of Caracortado, while two Barretts Equine Limited auctions receive in-depth coverage this month, with a preview of the March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training being held on Monday, March 21, and a review of the January Mixed Sale held on Jan. 24. Horse Care provides an article titled “C-Section In Mares” and our Annual Statistical Review includes all the information one needs to know about those breeders, stallions and Cal-breds who, through their dedicated efforts, tasted major success in 2010. California star Ack Ack, the first-ever Eclipse Horse of the Year in 1971, is the subject matter of Guest Forum, while the balance of this current publication includes all our other regular columns, features and departments that we hope will also prove to be both enjoyable and helpful. Until next time, may you breed the best to the best and not just have to hope for the best! —Rudi Groothedde rudi@ctba.com

The CTBA Working For You CTBA Holds Its Own During Economic Downturns
At this year’s Annual Meeting of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) in San Diego on Feb. 15, numbers from the nonprofit group showed it had made a profit in 2010, despite all of the recent downturns in the local Thoroughbred industry with respect to handle, purses, incentive awards, mares bred and live foals. The pie chart shown to the right details how the CTBA carefully managed its resources last year. That was through the hard work of the staff in its various departments, including Publications (web site, weekly newsletter, monthly magazine and annual industry and stallion directories), Registration & Incentive Awards, Sales/Auction, Membership & Subscriptions, Seminars/Events, Library and General Administration. Dates Set For CTBA’s Nor Cal Yearling Sale This year’s CTBA Sales Northern California Yearling Sale has been scheduled for the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton on Tuesday, Aug. 16, and the closing date for its $300 non-refundable entries is Monday, April 11. The upset price for the eighth renewal of this annual auction is $1,000 and the minimum commission charge will be $500. Cookie Hackworth, the CTBA’s Sales Coordinator, can be contacted at cookie@ctba.com or (800) 573-2822, ext. 243, for further information about the auction.
All four of the CTBA’s official publications, the monthly California Thoroughbred magazine, the California Thoroughbred WEEKLY newsletter and both the annual California Thoroughbred Industry Directory 2010/2011 and California Thoroughbred 2011 Stallion Directory, are now all available in digital form online at the CTBA website of www.ctba.com.
CTBA To Again Support Ag Day The CTBA will once again have a booth at the State Capitol in Sacramento for Agricultural Day on Wednesday, March 23. Assisting legislators with any questions they may have about the local Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry will be such representatives as CTBA President Leigh Ann Howard, its Event Coordinator, Christy Chapman, and the association’s Legislative Liaison, Bob Fox, as well as Victory Rose Thoroughbreds owner Ellen Jackson who generously brings a mare and foal from her farm to Ag Day every year.
Last year, 82 yearlings brought gross receipts of $357,400 at an average price of $4,359 and a median price of $3,000 with a $20,000 sale-topper. Among the 16 stakes-winning graduates of this sale are the graded stakes winners Sierra Sunset and Autism Awareness, $724,983-earner Bai and Bai, and 2009 and 2010 blacktype winner Excessive Passion. Autism Awareness and Bai and Bai sold for $1,000 and $3,200 in 2004 and 2006, respectively.

A Year To Remember
California-Bred Champions
by RUDI GROOTHEDDE With 17 individual California-breds winning 24 separate graded stakes races in 2010, including five grade I and 10 grade II events, it was a year to remember with all runners bred in the Golden State earning $70.3 million overall. With respect to championship honors, last year’s California Horse of the Year title was awarded to the brilliant Cal-bred filly Evening Jewel. The Champion Three-YearOld Female of 2010, she became a millionaire last year while earning $915,343 and winning twice in both grade I and grade II company. The runner-up to Evening Jewel in the Horse of the Year ballot was The Usual Q. T. ($1,489,320), last year’s Champion Older Male and Champion Turf Horse as a grade I winner of $912,650, followed by Unzip Me whose 2010 Champion Older Female campaign included a trio of grade III victories and earnings of $462,033. Also honored by the members of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) were grade II
winner Caracortado (Champion Three-Year-Old Male), dual grade III winner Cost of Freedom (Champion Sprinter), unbeaten Bench Points (Champion Two-Year-Old Male), and California Nectar (Champion Two-Year-Old Female) who joined Unzip Me as the first two Cal-bred graded stakes winners of 2011, with a win at the grade II level in January. ©Keeneland©Z

Evening Jewel: The Glitter Of Gold
California-Bred Champions
by EMILY SHIELDS It is a tribute to Evening Jewel’s ambitious 2010 campaign that she was selected as California’s Horse of the Year. She glittered in a season that included the exploits of grade I winners Acclamation, The Usual Q. T. and Unusual Suspect, as well as multiple graded stakes winners Unzip Me and Cost of Freedom. Any one of them deserved the title, but it was Evening Jewel’s four graded stakes wins—including two grade I victories—that earned her the honor in the eyes of the voters, who also selected her as Champion Three-YearOld Female. Evening Jewel’s efforts on the racetrack were all the more moving given the passing of owner Tom Braly, who died just days after his prize filly won the grade I, $300,000 Del Mar Oaks last summer. His wife Marilyn now retains sole ownership of the California-bred daughter of Northern Afleet, who is trained by close family friend James Cassidy. Thanks to Cassidy’s adept handling and the Bralys’ willingness to take their filly to the biggest stages in the sport, Evening Jewel was able to have a truly memorable year. Evening Jewel came into the 2010 season fresh off a victory in the $100,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes on Dec. 27, 2009. The race proved to be quite formful: second place finisher Warren’s Jitterbug has earned $239,238 and won the Sandy Blue Stakes, while the stakes winner Camille C, who finished in sixth place, has earned $302,301. Evening Jewel’s winning effort primed her for her championship season, which started a mere two weeks later. She was sent to post in Santa Anita’s grade III, $100,000 Santa Ysabel Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile contest against open
company. She finished second by a length to Crisp, who would go on to win the Santa Anita Oaks (grade I) later in the meet. Despite that strong showing and her solid record, Evening Jewel was dismissed at 18-1 in the grade I, $250,000 Las Virgenes Stakes five weeks later. She nearly won the one-mile event, but was nosed out on the line by the subsequent Eclipse Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, Blind Luck. However, Evening Jewel did finish ahead of both Crisp and also future dual grade I winner Switch. Rather than face Blind Luck and Crisp again, Cassidy opted to ship to Keeneland Racecourse for the grade I, $400,000 Central Bank Ashland Stakes on April 3. But they didn’t find the easier race they were hoping for. Instead, Evening Jewel went to post alongside Eclipse Champion TwoYear-Old Filly She Be Wild, Canadian champion and grade I winner Negligee and the dual grade I-placed Beautician. “None of the broadcasters really gave her a chance, or even thought she should be in the race,” Marilyn Braly said of Evening Jewel. “But she just went out and gave it her all.” Evening Jewel controlled the pace and held off the closing It’s Tea Time for the victory, finally getting the grade I that had eluded her in her previous start. The Bralys, who had a three-horse stable at the time, would have been content with that victory, but Marilyn said, “That one race was just the start of everything.” After some deliberation, they agreed to take on the best sophomore fillies in the country in the grade I Kentucky Oaks, a $584,300 race that would be Evening Jewel’s first start on a traditional dirt surface, as her prior starts had come on synthetics. In the Oaks, the

game filly took the lead at the top of the stretch, and it looked as if she would win until the shadow of the wire when favored Blind Luck closed fast enough and got her nose down on the line. Cassidy switched the filly to the grass for her next start, which came on May 31, in the grade II, $150,000 Honeymoon Handicap at Hollywood Park. This time, the photo went her way, as Evening Jewel and jockey Victor Espinoza scored by a head over grade III winner Cozi Rosie. By this time, Evening Jewel began to gather a steady stream of admirers. Her tendency to act up in the paddock and then pour her heart out on the battlefield won the love of California racing fans and the respect of other horsemen. She stormed through the The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s grade II, $150,000 San Clemente Handicap on July 25, and then held off grade I winner Harmonious in the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks over the same course 27 days later, giving her the second grade I trophy of her career. She was unanimously selected as the track’s Top Three-Year-Old Filly at the end of the meeting. Two weeks after the Del Mar Oaks

win, Tom Braly lost a long battle with cancer. “To win the Oaks was very special,” Marilyn said, “because that was the one Tom really wanted to win, and it ended up his last race.” Evening Jewel ran twice more, first shipping back to Keeneland for the grade I, $400,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes where she finished third. She then switched up her game to sprinting on the dirt and finished third in the grade I, $909,000 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Churchill Downs. She finished the year with four wins, three seconds, two thirds, and earnings of $915,343 in nine starts. She and 2010 Eclipse Horse of the Year Zenyatta were the only winners of two or more grade I races in North America last year who were victorious on two different surfaces at that level. Bred by the late Betty and her son Larry, Evening Jewel was sold for a mere $8,000 to Tim Kegel at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2008. The Bralys purchased her privately as a two-year-old, a decision that changed their lives. “Winning this award is very special, because it just tops off the amazing year that she had,” Marilyn noted. “I know that Tom would have been so proud of her for winning this.” In a year when Cal-breds stood out all over the map, Evening Jewel truly dazzled.

The Usual Q. T.: Better With Every Year
by RUDI GROOTHEDDE How does a Thoroughbred racehorse improve on being a grade I-winning champion? In the case of The Usual Q. T., he wins another grade I race and secures two more championships. The 2009 California Champion Three-Year-Old Male did just that last year, with an eight-race campaign that produced two wins, three placings and $912,650 in earnings to secure the titles of both Champion Older Male and Champion Turf Horse in the Golden State. Bred by Carlee van Kempen and raced by her family’s Don Van Racing Inc. in partnership with Michael Nentwig, George Saadeh and Jeffrey Byer, The Usual Q. T. now has career earnings of $1,489,320 from a record of 20-8-6-2 following a second place finish to dual California champion Caracortado in Santa Anita Park’s $300,000 Sunshine Millions Turf Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on Jan. 29. After two runner-up finishes as a two-year-old in 2008, The Usual Q. T.’s nine-race sophomore season included four stakes wins with a victory in the grade I Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park on Nov. 29, 2009, providing the highlight among his three triumphs in graded stakes company that year. In 2010, his five races on the turf produced an even higher level of quality.
A fourth-placed effort in the $5 million Dubai Duty Free (group I) going 1 1/8 miles at Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates on March 27, was followed by a onemile allowance win at Hollywood Park exactly three months later, when he defeated the subsequent grade I, $909,000 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Dakota Phone. The Usual Q. T. then posted his biggest win of last year, an easy two-length victory in the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s grade I, $300,000 Eddie Read Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on July 24. Trainer James “Jim” Cassidy, the 2010 California Trainer of the Year as voted by the Board of Directors of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA), praised his charge after the race by saying, “He tries every single time. I didn’t want Victor (Espinoza) to go inside (as they turned for home). I didn’t want to get the horse stopped. Victor was smart enough to see that and he just took a hold and went outside. When he got in the clear, I looked back at the field and couldn’t see anybody coming. If he doesn’t have any horses next to him, he can relax and that’s what he did today.” On Sept. 19, The Usual Q. T. finished second to the four-time grade I winner and 2008 Hollywood Derby victor, Court Vision, in the $1 million Woodbine Mile (grade I)

in Canada, before his third-placed finish to 2009 and 2010 Eclipse champions Goldikova (Ire) and Gio Ponti in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs in Kentucky on Nov. 6. On Dec. 27, The Usual Q. T. occupied that same finishing position in the $150,000 San Gabriel Stakes (grade II) going 1 1/8 miles at Santa Anita. The Usual Q. T.’s year had started with a very disappointing last-placed effort worth $3,750 in Santa Anita’s $500,000 Sunshine Millions Classic Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on Jan. 30, while his other 2010 start on an all-weather surface was a fifth place finish in the $1 million Pacific Classic Stakes (grade I) going 1 1/4 miles at Del Mar on Aug. 28. By Unusual Heat, the leading sire in the Golden State since 2008, The Usual Q. T. is out of the 2001 Western Fame mare Lunge, a full sister to the geldings Western Act, a four-time stakes winner and 10 times stakes-placed, and West Saratoga, a 13-time winner who was dual stakes-placed. After Carlee’s brother Dallas claimed her for $20,000 at Hollywood Park in June of 2004, Lunge won once from four more career starts for Dallas, Nentwig and Saadeh before retiring to the
breeding shed with a record of four wins, a second, three thirds and $73,262 in earnings from nine starts in her only season to race. After foaling The Usual Q. T. on Feb. 5, 2006, Lunge produced four more foals, including fillies by Benchmark and In Excess (Ire) in 2009 and 2010, respectively, before she tragically died of complications from colic while in transit to be bred in Kentucky last year. However, the good news is that another championship year for her pride and joy may be on the horizon. Edged out for California Horse of the Year honors by joint winners California Flag and Dancing in Silks in 2009, and then by Evening Jewel last year, The Usual Q. T. is scheduled to start in Santa Anita’s grade I, $300,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile on March 5. A winning effort in this prestigious race could lead to it being a case of third-time lucky for The Usual Q. T. in 2011. The three-time California champion not only seeks to add the ultimate local honor to his resumé, but may then be in a position to even challenge for a yearend Eclipse award too.

Unzip Me: Zip-Zoomin’ Away
California-Bred Champions
by MARCIE HEACOX Next, Unzip Me’s connections shipped her to Woodbine in Canada for the grade III, $153,072 Royal North Stakes on Aug. 2. In her first race outside her home state, Unzip Me proceeded to put on one of the best performances of her career to win by two lengths, in hand. “She just completely dominated the field,” Valpredo said. “That race motivated us to go to the Breeders’ Cup, it was such an impressive effort on her behalf.” After conquering Canada, Unzip Me returned home to Hollywood to score in the Oak Tree Racing Association’s grade III, $100,000 Sen. Ken Maddy Handicap on Sept. 30, then headed to the grade II, $909,000 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, Nov. 6 at Churchill Downs. In that five-furlong event, she got off to an uncharacteristically slow start but finished well to be third. Unzip Me’s productive year yielded six wins and two thirds from eight starts and $464,508. This year, she picked up right where she left off with a win in the grade III, $100,000 Monrovia Stakes on Santa Anita’s downhill turf on Jan. 2. Her overall record now stands at 17-10-2-3 with earnings of $645,988. Unzip Me’s a top turf sprinter, but Harris said her pedigree may open up other options for 2011. They may follow a route similar to last year, but they may also “get more adventuresome.” “There are a few one-turn miles at Woodbine that we feel really confident she could handle, but we can also try some of the two-turn grass route races here in California,” Harris said.
Turf sprint specialist Unzip Me went undefeated against her own gender in 2010 to zip up the title of California Champion Older Female. It’s been nearly three decades in the making for breeders Harris Farms Inc. and Donald Valpredo, who own the fiveyear-old City Zip filly in partnership with Harris Farms trainer Per Antonsen and her current racing trainer, Marty Jones. In 1982, John Harris and Valpredo bought Unzip Me’s fourth dam, In Prime Time. She produced Nopro Blama, who produced 1994 California Horse of the Year Soviet Problem, who in turn gave birth to Unzip Me’s dam, Escape With Me. “[It’s] always fun to have a top mare that we have bred and been responsible for the female family for over multiple generations,” Harris said. “It’s like raising one of your kids,” Valpredo said. “We looked at a photo of her the other day when she was a yearling, and she had a powerful look to her then, as a yearling, and she still possesses that today.” The chestnut began her four-year-old campaign by winning three straight 6 1/2-furlong sprints on Santa Anita Park’s downhill turf course—a Jan. 28 optional claimer, the $100,000 Irish O’Brien Stakes on March 20 , and the grade III, $100,000 Las Cienegas Handicap on April 11. She then ran in two minor turf sprint stakes at Hollywood Park, winning the $74,230 Great Lady M. Stakes on May 21 and placing third in the June 27, $75,410 Robert K. Kerlan Memorial Handicap against males.

Caracortado: One Of A Select Few
California-Bred Champions by EMILY SHIELDS
Breeder and trainer Mike Machowsky is quick to point out the significance of Caracortado’s award as 2010 California Champion Three-Year-Old Male. “He’s one of the few horses who have won Champion Two-Year-Old and repeated the next year,” the horseman pointed out. Indeed, Caracortado joins a list of just four other horses who have accomplished that feat since 1990: Best Pal, Bertrando, Cavonnier and Brother Derek. Considering the mark that those four stars left on the sport either on the racetrack or in the breeding shed, Caracortado is in fine company. The son of Cat Dreams raced six times last year, and although he only won twice, he went where few Californiabreds dare to go: along the Triple Crown trail and into the Preakness Stakes (grade I). Although he finished a valiant seventh after a wide trip, he did defeat Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver in that effort. To kick off the year and place himself in contention for a Triple Crown race attempt, Caracortado first won the grade II, $150,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park in February. He outran graded stakes winner American Lion and stakes winner Tiz Chrome that day, stamping himself as a leading contender for the Arcadia track’s important Derby preps. He finished third in the grade II, $150,000 San Felipe Stakes, then ran fourth in the grade I, $750,000 Santa Anita Derby. He didn’t have quite enough earnings to make the Run for the Roses, so it was off to Maryland for the $1 million Preakness instead. After the gelding emerged from the Preakness sore, Machowsky optioned to give him a break. “He really changed
a lot during the time off,” Machowssky said. “He grew more and filled out.” In a shrewd move, Machowsky entered Caracortado in a six-furlong allowance race on the grass for his return. Despite the layoff, the chestnut gelding won impressively with a rocket move down the center of the track to score going away by 1 3/4 lengths. That performance indicated that the turf is Caracortado’s forte. He finished out the year with a third-place finish in the grade I, $250,000 Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26. Despite the loss, his performance was impressive because he was still nearly eight lengths behind the leaders around the far turn on a weekend where front running speed ruled the Santa Anita ring. Caracortado’s year ended with earnings of $217,320 from a record of 6-2-0-2. He is owned in partnership by Machowsky and Donald Blahut of Blahut Racing LLC. “We’re on top of the world,” Blahut said. “This is a tough business, so we’re really happy, and rightfully so!” He also credits Machowsky’s patience for Caracortado’s recent brilliance. “He was very good this spring but it was tough on him, and the decision to take him out of training kept him good so he can have a four-year-old year. He’s a gelding, so he will stay around for a little while, and he’s popular. People follow his horse, maybe because of his name, or because there just aren’t too many horses like him.” After winning the $300,000 Sunshine Millions Turf Stakes in his four-year-old debut on Jan. 29, Caracortado could be on his way to winning a third California championship, which would truly place him in select company.

In the world of Thoroughbred racing, sprinters are in a class of their own. Speed is the name of the game. Whether a horse breaks out of the gate on top or comes from behind, he needs an abundance of speed to win at the various sprint distances. Such a speedster is the grade I winner Cost of Freedom, owned by Gary and Cecil Barber. Named as last year’s California Champion Sprinter, he was also honored as the Golden State’s Champion Older Male of 2008. Bred by Harris Farms, he won five of his eight 2010 starts and set a five-furlong track record at Hollywood Park. Cost of Freedom began last year’s campaign at Hollywood Park in May, with a gate-to-wire allowance win by 4 1/2 lengths. His time over the all-weather surface was a scorching 1:08.36 for six furlongs. On June 5, he returned as the 122pound highweight in the grade III, $100,000 Los Angeles Handicap to win a hard-fought battle by three quarters of a length in 1:08.49 over grade I winner E Z’s Gentleman. While Cost of Freedom failed to win at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club during the summer, he returned to form in the fall. His first start at Hollywood Park’s Oak Tree Racing Association meet was a fourth-placaed effort in the Ancient Title Stakes (grade I) which he used as a springboard to the $100,000 Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint Stakes. The Cal Cup Sprint gave the Barbers’ prized gelding a showcase to display his talent for the racing public. Under the highwieght of 123 pounds, he merely toyed with the
field of four other runners while cruising to a 6 1/4-length victory in 1:08.58. Cost of Freedom returned to Hollywood Park on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, with a 1 3/4-length win in the grade III, $100,000 Vernon O. Underwood Stakes in 1:08.46. He closed out his season by extending his winning streak to three-in-a-row with a 4 1/4-length win in the Miles Tyson Stakes, setting a track record of :56.14. A son of Cee’s Tizzy, Cost of Freedom is one of 39 stakes winners and four other California Champions, including 2000 Eclipse Horse of the Year Tiznow, by this Harris Farms pensioner. Cost of Freedom’s dam Freedom Dance, by Moscow Ballet, was also bred by Harris Farms. The nine-time winner has produced three other foals to race, all winners. She has a yearling filly by In Excess (Ire) and is due to drop a foal by leading sire Unusual Heat in mid-March. To date, daughters of the late Harris Farms sire Moscow Ballet have produced such top runners as 2010 classic winner Drosselmeyer and grade I winner Leave Me Alone. It has been a great ride for the Barber brothers to these championships since they claimed Cost of Freedom for $50,000 at Del Mar in July of 2008. That season, they set a record for 14 victories by an owner at the seaside track. Cost of Freedom’s totals at the end of 2010 stood at 21-11-1-3 for earnings of $857,983. His third in the $200,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes on Jan. 29, brought his overall earnings to $879,983.

Bench Points: Part Of A Winning Team
California-Bred Champions
by KEN GURNICK aborted a foal by High Brite last year, Rocks gave away the mare to Gary Broad when unable to sell her. Yakteen said Shaun Hadley at Legacy Ranch broke Bench Points, who was ready to run when sent to the track last Spring, breaking his maiden at first asking June 5 at Hollywood Park, then got sick and needed a month off. Yakteen brought the gelding back for the $100,000 Graduation Stakes for Cal-breds on Aug. 4, which he won by 2 3/4 lengths. The $100,000 I’m Smokin Stakes was next and Bench Points made it three-for-three in state-bred company by rallying five-wide and taking a three-way photo. But it was a tough race for Bench Points, who was jostled at the break, lost the left front shoe and soon was detected with a chip in his left knee, requiring surgery and a break at Winner’s Circle Farm in Bradbury. Bench Points returned with a flourish on Feb. 11, in an allowance optional claiming race, beating odds-on favorite Da Ruler, who is trained by Bob Baffert. Yakteen worked as Baffert’s assistant and also for Charlie Whittingham. “Everybody is excited at this time and looking forward to his next race, which looks like the grade II, $250,000 San Felipe Stakes (at 1 1/16 miles on March 12),” said Yakteen. “The big question is, can he handle two turns. Until you run, you never know. With a pedigree of Benchmark and Free House, he should be able to get the distance. He’s handled everything we’ve thrown at him so far. He’s by far the best three-year-old since I’ve been on my own.”
Tim Yakteen not only has an unbeaten California-bred champion in Bench Points, he also has a fan club in the gelding’s connections. “Give all the credit to Tim and his crew,” said Gary Rocks, Bench Points’ breeder. “We’re all grateful for what Tim has done with him,” said Charles “Chip” Martin, one of five partners in Bench Points (the others are Donnie Crevier, Linda Mariani, Mary Jo Zuraitis and Joann Buss). “He knows how to train and it’s nice that he’s got a good one in his stable. They are so hard to come by.” Yakteen came by Bench Points—a son of Benchmark named the 2010 Champion Two-Year-Old Male by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA)—through his long relationship with former trainer Jim Buss and Rocks, a former assistant trainer for both Buss and Laz Barrerra and now a self-described professional Keno player. Rocks bought Bench Points’ dam, the unraced Free House mare Mo Chuisle, for $13,000 out of the Barretts dispersal for the late CTBA director Trudy McCaffery in 2007, while in utero with Bench Points, her first foal. Rock sold half of Bench Points as a yearling to Linda Mariani, Mary Jo Zuraitis and Joanne Buss and the other half as a twoyear-old to Chip Martin and Donnie Crevier. Rocks also has a two-year-old full brother to Bench Points, named Points Offthebench, but when Mo Chuisle

California Nectar: The Sweetest Combination
by EMILY SHIELDS When Thor’s Echo was honored as California’s Champion Sprinter of 2006, co-breeder Steve Warner was on hand to accept the trophy at the CTBA’s Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner. Pablo Suarez, who owned the Breeders’ Cup winning Thor’s Echo, clearly recalls that moment and although he has reached the highest echelon of the sport as an owner, he always wondered what it would feel like to breed a top racehorse as well. Fast forward four years, and Suarez found himself unexpectedly in that position, standing on stage and accepting the trophy for his homebred California Nectar, the Champion Two-Year-Old Female of 2010. “I was delighted she received the honor,” Suarez said. “Her year was absolutely fantastic, and to breed a horse like that is a thrill of a lifetime.” California Nectar showed a lot of promise before her debut, causing Suarez, his wife and co-breeder Michelle, and trainer Doug O’Neill to have high hopes for the daughter of Stormy Atlantic from the beginning. California Nectar finished second in her debut at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on Aug. 14, a game performance in which she dueled through quick fractions and simply got outkicked to the wire. She ran back 14 days later, and again finished second, this time as the strong favorite. “We were disappointed when she ran second again, and we worried that she wasn’t as good as we thought,” Suarez explained. “We decided to give her some time off at Magali Farms, and when we brought her back at Oak Tree, everything clicked.” California Nectar broke her maiden
at Hollywood Park on Oct. 3, then stretched out to two turns for the first time in the $75,000 Robert H. Walter California Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes. Although she finished second again, California Nectar was only beaten a nose in a thrilling three-horse photo finish, and she had proven that she wasn’t exclusively a sprinter. After finishing fourth in the grade III, $100,000 Miesque Stakes on the grass, which Suarez admits was “merely a stepping stone,” California Nectar was entered in the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes at Santa Anita Park. The $100,000, seven-furlong dash is typically the annual benchmark by which the state’s best juveniles are measured, and California Nectar was up for the challenge. She culminated her season with a victory, winning by 1 1/2 lengths under jockey Patrick Valenzuela. At the end of the year, California Nectar’s record stood at six starts, two wins and three seconds with earnings of $123,800. She has already started her sophomore campaign in style, winning the grade II, $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes. After emerging from a loss in the $250,000 Las Virgenes Stakes (grade I) on Feb. 5, “pretty tired,” she has been sent back to Magali for a freshener. “It worked last time,” Suarez joked. California Nectar, who is out of the stakes-placed winner Absolute Nectar, by Carson City, is expected to return in the grade III, $100,000 Santa Paula Stakes on March 20. “Just to be in this spot is gratifying,” Suarez said. “Breeding is 90 percent luck and 10 percent skill. She is providing a once in a lifetime experience.”

Fillies To The Fore At Cal-Bred Champions Dinner
by RUDI GROOTHEDDE Photos by RON MESAROS Just as Zenyatta reigned at this year’s Eclipse Awards banquet held in Florida during January, it was a female runner who took top honors at the Annual Awards Dinner hosted by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort on Feb. 15, when the 2010 California-bred champions were crowned in style. Evening Jewel, already with the Champion Three-YearOld Female title to her name, was honored as last year’s California Horse of the Year by beating out the four-year-old duo of The Usual Q. T. (Champion Older Male and Champion Turf Horse) and Unzip Me (Champion Older Female), respectively. Following a cocktail party, the sold out event also honored the 2011 inductees to the California Hall of Fame in the form of Pirate’s Bounty, Snow Chief, Brian Sweeeney and Keith Card. Just a few hours earlier, the CTBA’s Annual Business Meeting had provided a presentation which included some encouraging news amongst all the downward trends currently being experienced in the local Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry. The results of the Board
of Directors election were also announced with Jane Johnson and Bonnie Vessels joining incumbents John Barr, Sue Greene and Leigh Ann Howard as the successful candidates. After his emotional acceptance of Evening Jewel’s first award, Larry Mabee, the co-breeder of this dual grade I winner with his mom Betty who had passed away exactly one year ago, was joined at the podium by the owners of this brilliant filly, Marilyn Braly, and her daughter Marianne. Emotions again ran high as Marilyn recounted how Evening Jewel had proved to be a life-prolonging blessing to her late husband Tom who had succumbed to cancer in September of last year. Also among this celebratory group was Jim Cassidy, the recipient earlier that night of the CTBA’s 2010 Trainer of the Year trophy as the conditioner of both Evening Jewel and The Usual Q. T. George Saadeh accepted on behalf of The Usual Q. T.’s breeder Carlee Van Kempen, who was on her honeymoon, while John Harris, Donald Valpredo and Per Antonsen collected the award for Unzip Me, bred by Harris Farms Inc.

and Valpredo and owned by this trio in partnership with her trainer, Marty Jones. John Harris and his wife Carole had earlier been lauded for their Harris Farms Inc.’s first-ever trophy for leading breeder by earnings of Thoroughbreds foaled in California. Representing Gary Rocks, the breeder of Bench Points (Champion Two-Year-Old Male), were two of this unbeaten gelding’s five owners, Mary Jo Zuraitis and Linda Mariani, while Mike Machowsky, the breeder, and trainer of Caracortado (Champion Three-Year-Old Male), and his co-owner Don Blahut were on hand for that presentation. Pablo Suarez, who bred and owns California Nectar (Champion Two-Year-Old Female) with his wife Michelle, graciously accepted for this accolade and John Harris again visited the stage as the breeder of Cost of Freedom (Champion Sprinter). Earlier in the evening, awards were accepted by the connections of last year’s leading local sires of California conceived foals. Madeline Auerbach and trainer Barry Abrams visited the podium twice on behalf of the syndicate that owns Unusual Heat (overall earnings and turf earnings), while Manuel Ochoa and Craig Allen, the respective Farm Manager and Breeding Manager of Ballena Vista Farm, were in attendance for their resident sires Tribal Rule (two-yearold earnings) and Benchmark (overall number of winners). On behalf of Larry and Marianne Williams, Lisa Jean Newbill collected the award for Lucky Pulpit as California’s top freshman sire by 2010 earnings. The festivities concluded with the Hall of Fame inductions. CTBA director John Barr was on hand for Marty and Pam Wygod’s Pirate’s Bounty, California’s leading sire in 1992, 1994 and 1995, Dianne Rochelle and trainer Mel Stute received the plaque for 1986 Eclipse champion Snow Chief, Brianne Sweeney visited the podium on behalf of her late father, the General Manager of the CTBA for 14 years, and CTBA Past President Keith Card was flanked by his wife Barbara as the event was brought to an emotional close with his humble acceptance speech.

The latter is by Northern Afleet, a resident of Taylor Made Stallions Inc. in Kentucky and also the sire of Evening Jewel and Amazombie. With an average field size of 9.5 for the six Sunshine Millions races, on-track and off-track racing fans— including 26,694 at Santa Anita— boosted the overall handle to almost $25 million for this popular day of racing that was the brainchild of Frank Stronach, the founder and non-executive chairman of the auto parts conglomerate Magna International (MI). On Jan. 31, it was announced by Magna International Developments (MID), a real estate spinoff of MI and the current owner of both Sunshine Millions host tracks, that the ownership of Santa Anita, Gulfstream and its other four racetracks was going to be transferred to Stronach and his family.

At the ninth renewal of Sunshine Millions on Jan. 29, California-breds won the three Santa Anita Park legs of this annual event against their Florida-bred counterparts despite facing a disadvantage in the overall number of runners with more than three to one against them. With just two Cal-breds facing 30 Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park and a favorable count of 16 to nine for them at Santa Anita in Arcadia, their $641,875 share of the available purse money represented an admirable showing as more than a one-third share of the total $1.8 million allocated amongst the event’s six black-type races. With a second and two thirds to go with their three victories, Cal-breds banked $632,750 of the $800,000 in purses paid out in the West Coast leg. Across the country in Hallandale, Cal-breds North Rodeo and Bran Jammas posted respective finishes of sixth and seventh in the $200,000 Filly and Mare Sprint Stakes and $300,000 Filly and Mare Turf Stakes. For the connections of the Cal-bred trio of Evening Jewel, Caracortado and Amazombie, it was a landmark day with wins in the $300,000 Distaff Stakes, $300,000 Turf Stakes and $200,000 Sprint Stakes, respectively. New Kid On The Block The $200,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint was supposed to be something of a coronation for Cal-bred Cost of Freedom, an ageless eight-year-old coming off three straight stakes wins at Hollywood Park. He seemed to tower over the field of seven rivals and was sent off as the heavy 3-5 favorite under jockey Joe Talamo. But while Cost of Freedom ran gamely, dueling on the lead throughout and just barely missing by two heads at the wire, the race became the coming-out party for Amazombie, a five-year-old gelding making his stakes debut. Thomas Sanford and Bill Spawr’s Amazombie had won five of his 14 previous starts, breaking his maiden in his fifth try. He raced exclusively in allowance events after that, competing against such stakes horses as Cayambe, Colgan’s Chip and Tropic Storm. Although most of his starts had come on turf, including four of his five victories, a narrow loss in a Santa Anita allowance on the main dirt track on Dec. 30, prompted the decision to run in the Sprint, a six-furlong dash over the same strip. Under jockey Mike Smith, Amazombie was hustled up to race in third behind Cost of Freedom and the dueling Excessive Passion. The eventual Continued on page 48

Lured by the draw of both top class racing and the 20 gourmet food trucks present at Santa Anita Park’s first Food Truck Festival, fans poured in for the ninth annual Sunshine Millions event on Jan. 29. Bolstered by unusually beautiful weather in the Golden State, attendance was up from the 2009 figure of 21,487 to 26,694. Gulfstream Park’s attendance number paled in comparison with only 8,960 on hand. Despite slim California-bred representation in the three races at Gulfstream Park in Florida, the $200,000 Filly and Mare Sprint, $300,000 Filly and Mare Turf and $500,000 Classic Stakes, state-breds dominated at their home track. The three races run at Santa Anita Park—the Sprint, Turf and Distaff— were all won by the Cal-breds Amazombie, Caracortado and Evening Jewel. In addition, Cal-breds finished first and third in both the Sprint and Distaff, and claimed the trifecta in the Turf. The Kentucky-based stallion Northern Afleet enjoyed a spectacular day, siring 50 percent of the Sunshine Millions winners, including both Amazombie and Evening Jewel as well as Filly and Mare Sprint winner Aegean. He is currently the second leading sire in the nation by progeny earnings. The increased number of fans on hand at Santa Anita Park were in for a treat, as all three races provided tough wagering opportunities and thrilling finishes.

winner crept closer around the far turn, then hooked up with a game Cost of Freedom turning in the stretch. The older runner put up quite a fight, but Amazombie had his measure under the wire and scored by a head over the gaining Apriority, stopping the clock in 1:07.28. The win, Amazombie’s sixth in total with three thirds and two seconds also to his name, increased his earnings to $308,708. Smith has been aboard for all but one of Amazombie’s last nine races, and has developed a good relationship with the son of Northern Afleet. Co-owner Spawr also trains Amazombie, who was bred by Gregg Anderson. The bay gelding is the second foal out of Wilshe Amaze, a two-time winner by In Excess (Ire). She is a half-sister to dual stakes winner Flom’s Prospector. The Horse For All Courses From winning on Santa Anita’s all-weather surface early in his sophomore year, to competing on dirt in the $1 million Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Maryland, Caracortado has done it all. Thanks to trainer Mike Machowsky, he recently found a new home on the grass, a surface where his devastating turn of foot has become more readily apparent. A six-month layoff followed his effort in the Preakness, from which Caracortado had emerged battered and sore. Machowsky, who also bred and co-owns the gelding in partnership with Donald
Blahut, had the idea to try turf in a Hollywood Park allowance race, and Caracortado impressed with a stunning win over Cherokee Heaven and the very same Amazombie who won the Sunshine Millions Sprint. Blahut gives Machowsky credit for deciding to try turf, a decision that led to the start at Sunshine Millions. Despite his obvious affinity for the grass, Caracortado still had something to prove in the $300,000 Turf. A strong field of competitors, including grade I winner Presious Passion, grade II winner Jeranimo and last year’s $150,000 California Cup Classic victor Soul Candy, made it a difficult race to win; and that was not to mention the presence of California champion The Usual Q. T., a dual grade I winner. Caracortado was sent off as the 3-1 third choice under jockey Joe Talamo. As expected, Presious Passion rushed to the lead and immediately opened up a gap of five lengths on his seven rivals, but he could not hold it for the entire 1 1/8-mile race. Talamo kept Caracortado back in mid-pack, but released him entering the stretch and simply held on while the son of Cat Dreams unleashed that furious stretch drive. In 1:46.75, he led a Cal-bred parade to the wire: The Usual Q. T. finished second and Soul Candy ran third. “That was a strong effort on his part,” Blahut said, “because he just rolled by some very good horses, some of which had earned a lot of money.” With the victory, Caracortado increased his earnings to $491,520. “Now we are right there with the best of the division in

earnings,” Blahut noted, “and I think we will probably keep him on the grass.” Caracortado, whose name means “scar face” in Spanish, has seven wins and two thirds in 11 starts. He is the second foal out of the unraced Maria’s Mon mare Mons Venus, a half-sister to dual stakes winner Jaded Pleasure. Caracortado is scheduled to make his next start on March 5, on the grass at Santa Anita in the grade I, $300,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile. A Gem In A Million Evening Jewel not only won the $300,000 Distaff Stakes, she also won a chance at a full 2011 campaign. Coming off an unusual three straight losses, owner Marilyn Braly was contemplating a new career in the breeding shed for her talented filly. “She didn’t do well in her prep race in January, so there was talk that she wouldn’t want to continue racing,” Braly said. Evening Jewel was coming off the worst performance in her career since her maiden debut, having finished fifth of six in the grade III, $100,000 Monrovia Handicap on Jan. 2. Despite that disappointment, she was still sent off as the 2-1 favorite in the Distaff, based on the merits of her ambitious 2009 campaign which earned her the title of California Horse of the Year. Before the Distaff, Evening Jewel was her typical fractious self in the paddock, but settled down on the way to the gate. The nine runners, six of whom were Cal-breds, broke evenly
and the Florida-bred grade II winner Briecat moved off to set the pace in the 1 1/16-mile race. Evening Jewel and jockey Victor Espinoza lagged early, then made up ground along the rail around the far turn. Swinging into the stretch, Espinoza guided the four-year-old filly three-wide, and she responded by running down the leader, Amazing, to get the win on the line in 1:42.25. Cal-bred Ultra Blend closed strongly in the center of the track to be third. Braly never gave up hope that the Evening Jewel of old would resurface. “I was thrilled, partly because it was the Sunshine Millions, and party because I was so worried about her,” Braly said. “But I felt that she would be back, and I spent a lot of time with her at the barn during the weeks before the race. I was so pleased when she ran well.” Future plans for Evening Jewel will depend on her fitness and mental state, but Braly has one goal: to win a grade I on the dirt. “She would then be the only filly to have won a grade I race on all three surfaces,” Braly said, “so that’s one of our goals and to do it would be spectacular. But it’s just impressive that she’s even won on all three surfaces.” In fact, the only horse to win grade I’s on all three surfaces is also a Cal-bred, the great gelding Lava Man. Evening Jewel has earned $1,182,943 by winning seven of her 16 starts with five seconds and two thirds. She is out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Jewel of the Night, a half-sister to the 2008 California Champion Two-Year-Old Female, Saucey Evening. On Feb. 20, Jewel of the Night’s three-year-old Salt Lake filly Maggie McGowan won her debut by 2 1/4 lengths going 5 1/2 furlongs on the dirt at Santa Anita.

Mike Machowsky: A Man Of Patience
by EMILY SHIELDS It is an understatement to say that Southern California trainer Mike Mackowsky has a grasp on the inner workings of the industry. Not only has he already made a name for himself as the conditioner of such stakes horses as Southern Image and Kelly Leak, he is also becoming more prominent as the breeder and co-owner of the two-time California champion Caracortado. Machowsky learned the trade from some of the finest horsemen in the state, and while has become a success by surrounding himself with both classy horses and owners, it is his knowledge of the equine athlete and subsequent patient handling which have earned him so many accolades. Machowsky’s early memories of the racetrack came via his Quarter Horseowning father. “His hobby was horses,” Machowsky recalled. “He had a passion for them and passed that on to me.” As a 14-year-old, Machowsky started “walking hots and cleaning stalls” for trainer Clay Brinson. He remembers the hard work as a pleasant experience: “I loved just getting to be around the horses.” Both Brinson and conditioner Henry Moreno helped get Machowsky started, but it was the five years spent under Racing Hall of Fame trainer Richard
Mandella that really kick-started Machowsky’s career. “Richard is very good about letting his assistants go out on their own,” Machowsky explained. “The last few months I was with him, he let me have a few horses to train before I went out on my own in 1989.” Training suits the 45-year-old Machowsky well. “I love getting up in the morning and going to work just to be around horses. There’s always that passion and dream, wondering where the next nice horse is going to come from. It’s a great job to have.” Machowsky’s enthusiasm has led to success. He saddled his first winner on Jan. 1, 1990, at Santa Anita Park, and won his first graded stake races eight years later, when Dancing Rhythum won the grade III, $108,200 Senorita Stakes at Hollywood Park on April 24, 1998. He was also the conditioner of another top filly in Fencelineneighbor, winner of the grade III, $150,000 San Gorgonio Handicap at Santa Anita Park in January of 2005. But Machowsky’s most well known Thoroughbred to date has been the $1,843,750-earner Southern Image. The dark bay son of Halo’s Image gained national prominence when he won four

major stakes races, including three grade I’s, in succession. First, he scored in the $250,000 Malibu Stakes, followed by two $1 million races, the ungraded Sunshine Millions Classic Stakes and the Santa Anita Handicap, and lastly the $500,000 Pimlico Special Handicap. If it were not for Machowsky’s patience and willingness to do right by his horses, however, Southern Image’s story may have been different. “After he won as a two-year-old opening day at Santa Anita (in 2002), we had to try one of those Derby prep races.” According to Machowsky, Southern Image emerged from that effort, a third place finish in the grade II, $150,000 San Vicente Stakes, “sore and tired,” so the decision was made to rest the colt and instead point for a summer campaign. “I’d learned from Mandella that you have to be patient with that kind of horse and let them mature and manage themselves.” Southern Image retired with six wins, a second and a third in eight starts, and now stands for $4,000 at Rancho San Miguel. Machowsky’s affinity for California-breds has led to even more accomplishments. “Out here in California, we have the best horses in the country trained by people like (Bob) Baffert and (John) Sadler,” Machowsky said. “It’s nice to have Kentucky-breds, but for a trainer trying to make a living out here and do his clients right, I definitely look for Cal-breds to buy. If you can get a good one it’s great for your owners; those Cal-bred bonuses can make a real difference in the bottom line every year.” The trainer noted that in the last two decades, Cal-breds have held their own against open company more than ever. “I am definitely a big fan and wish I had more Cal-breds.” Candy Factory, a state-bred daughter of Seattle Bound, won the $125,000 Solana Beach Handicap while in Machowsky’s barn, and Cal-bred Dance With Gable, a three-time stakes winner, was claimed by Machowsky for $40,000 in August of 2009. “Dance With Gable is just one of those fun horses,” Machowsky explained. “He got better

with age and doesn’t owe us a thing. We’ve been fortunate to have him.” Dance With Gable, a son of Dance Floor, has earned $366,735 while winning 11 of 29 starts with six seconds and three thirds. The California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (CTBA) member has developed a patient philosophy regarding the training of racehorses. “At the end of the day, you have to respect what the horse wants, because if the horse isn’t ready to do what you want, he’s not going to run well,” he said. “You want to try to keep your clients happy, but if you lead one over and he’s not ready, then it’s not the right thing to do. If the owner and trainer have patience, everybody benefits.” Donald Blahut, co-owner of Machowsky’s homebred Caracortado, is one who has reaped the rewards of this patience. After winning the $100,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes and the grade II, $150,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes, Caracortado earned a trip to Pimlico Racecourse in Maryland for the $1 million Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of the Triple Crown. He finished seventh and emerged from the race “sore and beat up,” much like Southern Image seven years prior. Since being given a break from the track, Caracortado has returned to win two of his three starts, including the $300,000 Sunshine Millions Turf Stakes. “He is a May foal, so we knew that he had room to improve and grow,” Machowsky said. “He seems to be really thriving now, and we’ll just let him tell us where to run this year.” Throughout his career, Machowsky’s runners have hit the board at a 45 percent clip and have earned more than $17.5 million in purses. The trainer has surpassed the $1 million in annual earnings benchmark seven times, and is poised for another big season. His meticulous method and understanding philosophy have proven that those who are patient are rewarded.

A Night To Remember Regional Sales by LISA GROOTHEDDE When darkness falls on Pomona on Monday, March 21, the spotlight will shine brightly upon a new assembly of elite racing prospects at the 2011 Barretts March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training. Moved from its traditional daytime placement to a later, 7 p.m. start time, the single session hosted by Barretts Equine Ltd. will feature a catalog of 104 youngsters, nine of whom were bred in California. During the 2010 edition of the auction, 69 of the 100 juveniles who were led through the Barretts ring were reported as sold for gross receipts of $6,255,000, an average price of $90,652 and a median of $60,000, representing across-the-board fiscal declines from the corresponding sale in 2009. Mixed Messages
by LISA GROOTHEDDE Without the stimulus of a marquee dispersal, such as the prominent consignment that boosted its previous edition, the 2011 Barretts January Mixed Sale suffered double-digit declines in most major categories when it was conducted in Pomona on Jan. 24. The single session served as California’s only scheduled sales venue for Thoroughbreds of various ages this year. But buyers proved they were still hesitant to invest in the bloodstock market when the final sale results were tallied. From the 347 horses offered at this year’s auction, Barretts Equine Limited reported 256 were sold for gross receipts of $1,359,400—a 32.5 percent decrease from the $2,013,000 in sales achieved in 2010, when 275 of 447 horses were sold. The 2011 average price plunged 27.5 percent, from $7,320 to $5,310, while the median dropped 21.9 percent, from $3,200 last year to $2,500 this year. Sellers, however, were more realistic with their reserves this time around; the buy-back rate improved from 38.5 percent to 26.2 percent when 91 horses went unsold. The 2010 auction was enhanced by a major reduction of holdings from Jenny Craig’s Craig Family Trust. The sale of 39 horses from the Craig consignment contributed $697,600 toward the auction’s total proceeds, leading to a one-year bump in gross and average. “I thought that, overall, the sale was better than the previous year on a horse-by-horse basis,” said Barretts Vice President Bill Baker. “This is most obvious when you remove the Craig Reduction horses from the 2010 figures, although the clearance rate was much improved even without taking that into account.” Although the statistical results were different than those realized at the 2010 mixed sale, the most coveted catalog page had a familiar look to it in 2011. Eliciting the auction’s top price of $70,000 was the four-year-old filly Smoothe as Candy, a half-sibling to last year’s $65,000 sale-topping mare, Gentlemen’s Crown. Consigned as one of 24 offerings from Jenny Craig’s Rancho Paseana, Smoothe as Candy sold as a broodmare prospect to Narvick International Inc. The Candy Ride (Arg) filly out of the stakes-winning Seattle Slew mare Crownette is a full sister to 2009 El Camino Real Derby (grade III) winner Chocolate Candy and a half-sister to the granddam of 2010 Malibu Stakes (grade I) winner Twirling Candy. Achieving the second-highest price at the 2011 auction was a California-bred filly from the 2009 crop of Tribal Rule. The youngster, a half-sister to two group I-winning champions out of former Argentina Broodmare of the Year Miss Peggy (Arg), was consigned by River Edge 58

Farm, agent, and purchased for $38,000 by trainer R Marcelo Polanco. Ranking third with his $32,000 pricetag was the six-year-old gelding Slam Slew, a two-time Hollywood Park winner by Grand Slam who was bought by agent Mersad Metanovic from Sam Hendricks’ consignment. A bid of $27,000 from trainer Carl O’Callaghan, acting as agent for Super Horse, secured the sale’s top-priced yearling: a Cal-bred Atticus filly out of the group I winner and producer La Costa Azul (Arg) who was consigned by Havens Bloodstock Agency. The auction’s leading sire of yearlings, by average, was Unusual Heat. A pair of the Harris Farms stallion’s 2010 offspring averaged $23,000. Among broodmares, two Cal-bred stakes winners shared the high-water mark when they were each purchased for $20,000. The $449,704-earner Bold Roberta, a 13-year-old daughter of Bold Badgett who was consigned by agent Harris Farms as part of a reduction by SLU Inc., was selected by Warrendale Bloodstock while carrying a foal by Fusaichi Pegasus. Meanwhile, the productive family of 2000 Eclipse Horse of the Year Tiznow was represented by 10-year-old Tizakitty, a Distinctive Cat mare out of his graded stakes-producing full sister Tizso who was bred last year to Western Fame and subsequently acquired by Solis Bloodstock, agent, from the complete dispersal of consignor Applebite Farms. With 62 horses sold for a collective $252,400, Havens Bloodstock Agency ranked as the auction’s top consignor by gross sales, edging out the River Edge Farm consignment, which generated $237,300 through the sale of 34 horses. Leading the way among buyers was Dr. James Buell’s Kings River Ranch, with overall expenditures of $98,300 for eight yearlings and one juvenile. Narvick International ranked second with its sole purchase of the sale-topper, followed by agent Gary Sherlock, who bought three juvenile males for a collective $40,500. “As long as there is racing in California, there will be a commercial market for horses who will be competitive here,” Baker said. “The demand for horses has been decreasing in the last few years with the soft California economy and other uncertainties, but I believe that the supply has been decreasing at a faster rate. Those with the foresight to stay involved and increase the quality of their product will be rewarded when the demand will significantly outweigh the supply.” For complete results of the 2011 Barretts January Mixed Sale, visit www.barretts.com. www.ctba.com
C-Section In Mares Horse Care by HEATHER SMITH THOMAS Sometimes it is impossible for a mare to deliver her foal normally, and it must be removed surgically. Juan Samper, DVM, PhD (Langley, British Colombia) says there are several reasons that a C-section may be needed. These would generally fall into three categories—a programmed C-section, an emergency C-section and a terminal C-section. “There may be a pre-existing condition in the mare that makes it impossible for her to deliver vaginally, or would put the health of the mare at risk to deliver the foal. If a mare has a fractured pelvis, for instance (that compromises the dimensions of the birth canal, even though the fracture healed), or if you have a mare with a history of problems foaling or problems with her reproductive tract in general (such as cervix incompatible with vaginal delivery, etc.), you’ll need a C-section,” he says. In those mares you must carefully time the surgery and do it when the mare is ready to foal. Taking the foal too early will generally result in the loss of the foal. “Another situation is an emergency C-section in a mare who is in labor with a foal who’s not in proper posture. Either the veterinarian cannot get there to correct the dystocia or the veterinarian or farm manager are unable to correct the posture and position of the foal in order to deliver it vaginally.” This puts you into an extreme time crunch because the surgery must be done immediately. “Most of the time in these instances, it will be too late to have a live foal but the surgery is important to save the mare and must be timely in order to save her,” he says. It is preferable to bring the mare to a veterinary hospital to do the surgery, under ideal hospital conditions, but sometimes this is not possible, especially if the mare is unable to travel. “I had one mare last year who started to foal and everything was normal except that the foal was coming backward. We were not able to pull the foal and deliver it vaginally. At that point, with the foal partway out, what are you going to do? You cannot get the mare up and transport her to hospital. I ended up doing a flank C-section, in the stall. The foal was dead, but the mare survived. If you have to do it on the spot, you must do the most appropriate and safest thing—for both the mare and the people involved in the procedure—and this would be a flank incision,” he says. Normally the surgery would be a midline incision with the mare on her back. “You have to be prepared. When someone is foaling out a number of mares, that person needs to be prepared to make a decision about what must be done (if a mare has an
www.ctba.com
emergency dystocia), and how it needs to be done,” says Samper. There is no time for indecision. “The other possibility that has to be considered, in the various reasons for surgery, is a terminal C-section. This would be when the foal is more valuable than the mare, and the object is to save the baby’s life.” This might be the case in an embryo-transfer situation in which a recipient mare is carrying another mare’s foal. If the mare carrying the foal has a serious problem, there may be need for a terminal C-section. “In this instance, you would anesthetize the mare, open her up and remove the baby, and then euthanize the mare. This would usually be done if the mare has started to foal and cannot deliver the foal,” he explains. One of the things a person needs to keep in mind is that you cannot be caught off guard. “If you are foaling mares, you need to know what steps you will take. How far away is your veterinarian? Where is the closest place you can take the mare if she had to have surgery? How do you know when the mare is in trouble and how long do you wait before you call for help? You need a plan,” says Samper. Monitor The Mare If you have a mare whom you know will need a surgical delivery, such as a mare with a pre-existing condition who would require a C-section, it is crucial to know exactly when she is ready to foal. “You must have several things in place, starting with an accurate breeding date. Then you need to know how ready she is to foal, and this can be done by checking the calcium levels in the milk,” he says. When she is getting close, then you can either watch her continually for when she goes into labor, or induce her. In these situations you would want the mare to be at the veterinary hospital when she goes into labor. “Once she actually starts, then you can go ahead and anesthetize the mare and take the foal out,” says Samper. You can’t just take the foal whenever you think it is full term; the mare’s body must be programmed for delivery, in order to have optimum chance for a live, healthy foal, which means she must be in labor when the surgery is performed. “You cannot go in and take the baby out just because you decide it’s time. The mare and the baby both have to be ready, in order for us to deliver a healthy foal,” he explains. Continued on next page

Horse Care Cont’d. Some people think that if a pregnant mare becomes seriously injured or is dying, they could have a C-section performed and save the foal. If the foal is not ready—if the mare is not actually in labor when you take the foal out— you would rarely end up with a live foal. Even if the mare is near term and has a serious colic that requires surgery, if she is not ready to deliver the foal, you are better off to just do the colic surgery and leave the foal in there. “A person could argue that this would be a pre-existing condition that could necessitate C-section—if the mare is in a serious state of disease (such as endotoxemia or peritonitis) or has a problem such as colic or some other medical condition that is not associated with the reproductive tract or the vaginal tract for delivery. Some people wonder if it is better to take the risk of removing the baby even if it’s a little premature. If you are going to lose the mare anyway and she is more than 300 days’ gestation, you may decide to take the risk and go to the effort and expense of trying to save the foal,” he says, but it’s not always easy to save it. Intensive care units for neonates have improved a lot in the past decade, and there may be a chance of saving the foal, but it’s still a huge risk and can be very expensive. It’s best to wait as long as possible, unless the mare is actually dying.

Have A Plan “The owners of mares who come to my clinic to foal are informed of all the possible problems that might occur, and need to decide ahead of time what they would want done with the mare. Do they want me to deal with it and see how much I can get done in trying to deliver the foal, or do they want me to refer the mare to a surgical hospital?” he says. In some instances, an owner might choose a fetotomy if the foal is already dead by the time the realization is made that the mare cannot deliver normally. It may be cheaper to do a fetotomy (cutting off a limb or leg so the foal’s body can be delivered vaginally), but it is not always safer than a C-section. “A fetotomy is a procedure that requires a lot of skill and luck to save the mare,” says Samper. Many times it will result in a mare with a torn cervix or damaged uterus. The veterinarian must be very good at this, to avoid severe injury to the mare. Everyone should be prepared for all possibilities. “A mare’s foaling is such an explosive event that it doesn’t give you time to call around and try to decide what to do if there is a problem. Most of the time it will happen in the middle of the night. You need to be ready for whatever eventuality you may encounter. Having the right people available at the right time is going to be the key. This gives a much better chance for having a successful outcome,” he says.
www.ctba.com
“You also need to know ahead of time what a successful outcome entails. Is it to have a live mare? Or baby? Or both? You need to already have your priorities established for what is more important, in this situation.” After The Surgery “In general, a mare after the surgery would be cared for about the same as mare that had a normal delivery. The biggest thing, following the surgery, is that you want to make sure the placenta is not compromised. When you suture the uterus up, you want to make sure that part of the placenta is not caught in the stitches. Shedding the placenta is one of the key factors in the recovery/health of the mare following the surgery. After that, within a day or two of the C-section, you can start doing uterine lavage without any major risk to the mare,” says Samper. The mare should be on systemic antibiotics for a few days,
and you should also use some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for a while. “She needs to be treated medically and have all the supportive care she needs. Sometimes these mares are a little bit shocky when they go into labor and not able to deliver, and will need some intravenous fluids for a few days,” he says. The mare has a double stress—with a compromised foaling, and then the surgery on top of that. If the mare recovers from the surgery, she has a good chance for normal breed-back. “As long as there is no serious damage to the reproductive tract, the chances for a mare to breed back are very good, not much different than with a regular foaling. And the chances of a mare repeating the need for surgical delivery are very low, unless it is a mare with a pre-existing condition that precludes normal delivery. The chances of a mare having a problem again are very, very low,” he explains.
The Cost Of A C-Section “The surgery in general will cost about $3,000. But this may be just the starting point if there are complications following the surgery. If the mare ends up with peritonitis there will be additional expense to treat her for that. This may depend on whether it was a really clean surgery in which there was no contamination—no one had been trying to deliver the foal beforehand,” explains Samper.
If it was a dirty C-section, meaning there were several people trying to deliver the foal and there’s contamination from vaginal manipulation, lubricants, etc., then the mare may end up with peritonitis. Or she may have a torn uterus. These sorts of complications would entail more time in the hospital and more expense. If there’s a live foal who ends up in intensive care for a while, this would be an additional cost.

The statistics contained in these rankings are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems Inc. (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates that a stallion has been pensioned, an asterisk (*) that he has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere, a number sign (#) that he did not stand in California in 2010 but is standing in the state in 2011, a double dagger (‡) that he is not standing in California in 2011 but will stand in the state in 2012 and in bold that he is a freshman sire. In all cases, a sire will remain in the rankings until the year after his last California foals are two-year-olds. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates only.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI). Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Percentages are based upon number of foals of racing age.

Ack Ack: The First Eclipse Star
by JOHN CALIFANO
©Bill Mochon
When Thoroughbred racing’s annual Eclipse Awards began in 1971, the industry couldn’t have made a better selection for its first Horse of the Year. The honor went to a handsome bay colt, named after anti-aircraft guns in World War II, who began racing in the East and ultimately gained national prominence on the West Coast. That horse was the front-running Ack Ack. Ack Ack was bred in Kentucky by Capt. Harry F. Guggenheim, and first owned by his Cain Hoy Stable. He was sired by Battle Joined out of the unraced Turn-to (Ire) mare Fast Turn, and foaled on Feb. 24, 1966. Following his two-year-old and three-year-old campaigns, highlighted with a track record in the one-mile Derby Trial Stakes and a score in the $100,000 Arlington Classic, the colt was sent out to California to begin a long association with two legends of the sport, Charlie Whittingham and Bill Shoemaker. After his four-year-old debut on April 10, 1970, that netted a fourth place finish in Hollywood Park’s six-furlong Premiere Handicap, Ack Ack won his next four starts (one through disqualification) from 5 1/2 to seven furlongs, culminating with a 1 1/2-length win in Santa Anita Park’s 6 1/2-furlong Autumn Days Handicap on the turf. Beginning on Jan. 2, 1971, Ack Ack remained at Santa Anita for his next five starts. Under the highweight of 129 pounds, and after a speed duel with another horse, Ack Ack finished second to Jungle Savage, under 117, in the six-furlong Palos Verdes Handicap. Two weeks later, in the seven-furlong San Carlos Handicap, he faced Jungle Savage again, in addition to Malibu Stakes winner King of Cricket, and the previous year’s California Derby winner George Lewis. On a good track, Ack

Ack prevailed in a time of 1:21, only two-fifths of a second off Imbros’ track record, set on a fast surface. Ack Ack won his first race over a mile on Feb. 6, in the 1 1/16-mile San Pasqual Handicap, under an impost of 129. He stumbled at the start but quickly recovered to take the lead and never relinquished it. It was also his first victory for new owners E. E. “Buddy” Fogelson and his wife, actress Greer Garson, who had purchased Ack Ack after the death of Guggenheim. In late February, the colt defeated 10 rivals, including world record-holder Figonero in the 1 1/8-mile San Antonio Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths, in the rapid time of 1:47. On March 13, Ack Ack was assigned 130 pounds in the 1 1/4-mile Santa Anita Handicap, and went gate-to-wire, repelling the late charge of stablemate Cougar II (Chi). Moving across town to Hollywood Park, Ack Ack made three more starts while never carrying less than 130 pounds. In June, he took the 5 1/2-furlong Hollywood Express Handicap by three lengths in a time of 1:02 3/5, only one-fifth of a second off the track mark. Ack Ack returned on July 5, in the grassy American Handicap, and led all the way, finishing four lengths in front of his six opponents after covering the 1 1/8 miles in a course record time of 1:47 1/5. On July 17, Ack Ack started in the 1 1/4-mile Hollywood Gold Cup, under 134 pounds, still the heaviest burden ever assigned in the race. Against seven runners, he broke in front to stay there and crossed the wire in 1:59 4/5, with a 3 3/4-length winning margin. It was hoped that Ack Ack would resume racing in the East beginning with the Woodward Stakes, but after suffering from colic, and with a growing equine epidemic, he was retired. Voted the 1971 Eclipse Horse of the Year, he remains the only one to receive the honor after a campaign entirely in California. He was also named Eclipse sprint and handicap champion. Ack Ack boasted 27 career starts, 19 wins, six seconds and $636,641 in earnings. At Claiborne Farm, Ack Ack was a productive stallion. Among the many stakes winners he sired were grass champion Youth and 1987 Santa Anita Handicap (grade I) winner, Broad Brush. Ack Ack was also broodmare sire of Epsom Derby winner and English champion, Benny the Dip, and champion older female North Sider. Ack Ack was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1986, and passed away four years later. In the early ’70s, this great Thoroughbred was a model of excellence and versatility, a California hero and a preeminent American star.
