The Story THE STORY
SITE PREPARATION
How does a mansion appear on the side of a mountain outside Las Vegas? It all started with a drive between Lee Canyon and Kyle Canyon along Deer Creek Road. When you look up to the right you could see a small cabin about two thirds of the way up the side of the mountain in the middle of the Toiyable National Forest.
In order to build the 4300 square foot castle that occupies the site today a lot of work lay ahead. The only way to increase the building site was to actually remove some of the mountain. Since part of the original cabin was to be preserved, dynamite was not an option. The only way to remove the mountain was to bring in heavy equipment and hoe-ram the mountain down to size.
After some research it was found that the cabin and a few neighbors actually owned the land in the middle of the National Forest designation. Now it became apparent that one could actually own this piece of heaven. The purchase was made and the transformation began.
Bringing the heavy equipment up the mountain was no small task. The equipment had to be transported up a mile and a half along a single lane road. During the next two years the ardulous task of chipping away over 10,000 tons of mountain continued until finally the building site was ready.
THE BUILDING The first item of business was to pick the type of logs for the home. From Colorado to the Canadian Rockies the logs were researched and finally a grove of lodgepole pines was located in Montana. This grove of pines had been standing dead for over 2 years. The logs were cut and shipped to the building site.
Next were the oversized windows to allow maximum enjoyment of the spectacular views. All windows were specifically engineered to withstand the special elements of life at 9,000 feet above sea level on the side of a mountain. They are actually designed to withstand the occasional wind gusts that mountain living can encounter.
How do you provide power and water to a home that is not on the grid? Start with your own well that has a high speed pump and four pressurized storage tanks. Then you install 2 tankless hot water heaters and voila, Character is important in every home you can now take a hot shower. but this home exudes it. The enormous stone fireplace is accentuated by the Then comes the electricity. Mount 24 inlaid bristlecone in front of it. These large solar panels on a portion of the bristlecone pines, which make up the roof that provides the optimal angle grand fireplace mantle as well as some for the sun to do its’ job. Follow that of the furniture and appointments, was with a commercial grade invertor, a harvested from dead bristlecone pines 36 industrial grade battery back-up on the property. Some of these trees and when necessary an automatic were 2,000 to 4,500 years old when generator that kicks in when needed. they died. Since bristlecone pine only grows about an 1/100th of an inch per year in diameter they are very hard. In order to use this extraordinary wood special craftsmen and diamond tipped blade saws were necessary. Every log was cut to fit at the construction site and put together by hand. All cuts were made on an angle to further enable the logs to fit together like a puzzle, tight and permanent.
The Story THE VIEWS
LIVING
The most unique characteristic of this extraordinary home are the incredible views. There are views to every point on the compass. There are mountain views with fantastic fall colors flowing down off of Mummy Mountain. Views to the north and northeast stretch across the desert and Sheep Mountains. Peaks as far away as one hundred miles can be seen. When you look out to the east and southeast you will see fabulous Las Vegas with Lake Mead as a backdrop.
No appointment nor amenity has been left out of this home. Granite counters, Wolf appliances, built-in bookcases, wine racks, island bar and oversized rain shower are but a few of them. In laid piece by piece the floors are not just functional and durable but a thing of beauty. Finished with exposed wood and venetian plaster, the interior combines elegance and rustic like you have never seen before.
The home was positioned so that all of these views can be seen from every room in the house. The master suite was designed so you can lie in bed and watch the sun come up over the mountain. When you step outside on to the enormous deck, all 3,000 plus square feet of it, you immediately feel a little smaller as you take in the truly heavenly touch of nature.
Completely private. Totally secluded. Uncommonly self sufficient. This unbelievable property’s true wonder is that it is less than an hour from the Las Vegas Strip. Quiet, beautiful and 25 to 35 degrees cooler make this property a must have.
